With a potential job offer in mind, you return to dessert to feast on cheesecake. A place called the Cheesecake Factory certainly lives up to the name. Eventually when nobody can eat anymore, it is decided that it’s time to leave.

As everybody’s waiting for an elevator, you step out to the side to compose your thoughts. As far as birthdays go, this one takes the cake. Or should you say… cheesecake? And it’s not even really over yet. You still have a do anything you want wish. Maybe you’ll use it to go to Alcatraz. You’ve heard some pretty wild things about that place – stuff you’d like to see first hand.

Anyway, it’s not like it’s hard to beat out previous birthdays. This one’s better attended and has a much better gift-value-to-person ratio. Gift value being how much you value the gifts, not necessarily their worth. Also, the cake was good.

You feel a knot of frustration, nervousness, and embarrassment coming your way. You turn around and see Baron. He’s actually kind of dressed up, now that you’re thinking about it. Newish jeans and a stylish sweater. He smiles sheepishly at you. “Hey,” he says.

You can tell he was hoping to sneak up on you so he’d get the first word. It didn’t happen.

>Look, forget it. I just…. It’s cool, whatever.

“You’re such an idiot,” you mutter.

Baron scratches the back of his head. “About that. I talked to Ro and -”

“Look,” you say, cutting him off, “it’s just, like… it’s whatever. We’re cool.” If your positions were switched, this is exactly the kind of crap you’d pull.

So. Even though you’re still angry, but you’re not really sure if you’re mad at Baron. You’re not really sure who you’re mad at, actually. You just are. You know, mad.

“You’re just lucky I like dances. And going to dances,” you add, keeping the promise of anger in your voice.

“Okay,” Baron says, seeming more positive. “But just so you know, I’m sorry about… you know. I wasn’t really thinking about it.”

“Let’s stop talking about this,” you say.

“One more thing on the subject? If I may?”

“Whatever.”

“After I found out what Vikrama was getting you, my present seemed kind of lame. The whole coupon thing was just a cover for the cameras. This is the real present,” he says, producing a festively colored gift bag from behind his back. He hands it to you, and you take it.

Huh. You thought it was weird how he was always keeping a hand behind his back all the time. He’d been going through some lengths to keep this concealed. But enough of that, you have something that escaped the opening queue for presents. It must be rectified immediately.
>>
You pull out the contents of the bag. It’s a case with both the Hellboy movies, with a big bar of chocolate taped thoughtlessly to the back. Well, not thoughtlessly, really. It’s actually taped in a clever was so as to seem thoughtless. It’s rather well secured to its present position.

Baron watches you for a reaction. “I didn’t really have a perfect idea for a present,” he confesses, “so instead I went with quantity. Two out of three’s not too bad, is it?”

“Hey kids, elevator’s here!” Cassandra calls out, beckoning to you. Everybody else is already filing in.

>Yeah, not bad. D+ is still passing.
>Why’d you pick Hellboy? Seems kind of out there. (Though it is probably your favorite movie)

You shuffle the things bag into their home and head off for the elevator with Baron. “Why Hellboy though? Kind of out there, isn’t it?” you ask. “I mean, yeah, it’s excellent taste and whatnot, plus it has Ron Perlman being freaking boss all.”

Baron begins counting things off as you cram yourselves into the overly-stuffed elevator. “You have a super expensive demon costume. And you’re always drawing devils and hellhounds. And it’s a super cool movie. Seemed like it’d be right up your alley,” he finishes.

Rowan grins. “You’ve got that right,” she says. Everybody laughs, though you’re pretty sure everyone is laughing for a completely different reason.

You hit the ground floor and spill out of the elevator, and people start scattering to their various rides, bidding you sincere birthday wishes beforehand.

You once more wind up with Rowan in Moriah’s Catalina.

A thought occurs to you, and you speak your mind from the back of the car. “Guys,” you say, “we have to tell them.”

Moriah looks you in the mirror.

Rowan turns to face you. “Well. I guess they might be ready,” she says.

“Don’t mention me,” Moriah says in a calm tone.

“Of course,” says Ro. “Only if they don’t freak out.”

“Seriously though, there’s no reason they should freak out,” you say. “I mean. Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings and freaking movies like this,” you shake your brand-new copy of Hellboy, “mean anybody’s ready. This stuff’s cool as hell. We just need to do it at the right moment.”

“I don’t disagree,” says Rowan. “It’s just… a big step. It’s hard to know if we’re ready, you know?”

>Don't wimp out on me. We’ve been at it for months. Vik and Baron are all suspicious all the time. Knowing’ll be a relief. That was the plan from the beginning.

“Ro,” you say. “You were the one complaining about having to hide who you are. You’re the one who came up with the dumb plan in the first place.” You shake your head to yourself. “I mean, we’ve been at it for months, dropping hints. Vik and Baron are all suspicious all the time, and the reason for it is so it’ll be a relief when we tell them. That’s what this has all been about since the beginning. Otherwise we’re just throwing all that away, and we’ve painted big targets on our back for nothing.”

“Okay okay,” Rowan says, giving in. “We’ll talk about this after we get home, okay?”

“You bet we are,” you say.

--

It’s later, and you’re in your designated beanbag chair in Rowan’s room in your PJ’s, and you’re having a row with Ro, but you can’t think of a way to communicate your pun to the intended audience. The two of you are currently discussing very important matters, and you find you’re not as sure about anything as you thought you were. (Stress: 55/100)

“I just… not soon. It just isn’t feeling right,” says Rowan. She’s buried beneath pillows on her bed, though you still catch the gleaming gold of her halo from beneath.

“But the plan,” you argue, running your claws through your hair. “It was your idea!”

“Well, assuming they don’t freak out, then yes, but…” you grind your gears and come up with no answer as to what you’d do if they did freak out. “Okay, so it’s a complicated question. I mean, I know it's not as simple as letting the truth free and everything being sunshine and whatnot, but I hate all these stupid secrets that keep everybody out of the most important parts of my life. It’s like living in a fucking closet.”

Rowan fluffs her wings, sending all the pillows flying. She sits up and pats her legs nervously. “I know,” she says quietly, staring at the bat signal on her dresser.

“How’d your dad break it to Cass?” you ask. “I mean, him being like, not all human and also a bajillion years old.”

Rowan scoffs. “Dad was being attacked by sea monsters and mom helped fight them off,” she says. “So you know, that’s helpful. We just have to wrangle up a few creatures of the deep and arrange it so we have to smite them together as a team.”

“This would be so much easier if I was Ron Perlman,” you say to yourself.

“Well Ron Perlman didn’t have the option of not looking like he was a huge red demon spewed from the bowls of hell,” Ro counters.

“Yeah, I know,” you say, “that’s kind of what I was getting at.”

“Blah!”

“You’re not contributing anything,” you say.

“Neither are you!”

“Okay okay, how about we start with magic,” you say. “Like, hey, magic sword, check it. If they can take that, they can take anything.”

“Magic is a big deal,” says Rowan.

“Not as big a deal as having feathery angel wings or razor sharp raptor claws though, maybe. So I don’t know! I’m just spit balling here – everything’d be so much easier without all these dumb secrets all the time.”

“Okay, so you want to do this then, right?” she says. “However we go about it.”

“I just think we have to,” you say. “I mean. I tried keeping all the secrets when I first ran into you guys, and that didn’t pan out, and now everything’s better.”
>>
“All right,” says Rowan. “We just have to… tell them. Somehow. Somehow soon.”

“Sometime soon?” you correct her.

“Hey, you want me to lay off you, you have to extend the same courtesy.”

You shrug. “Meh.”

“Fine. When we get a good chance, we’re doing it. Right?”

“If that’s what you want,” you say sarcastically.

“Agh!”

You snicker to yourself. “So we’re clear.”

Ro nods. “We’re clear,” she says.

Well. At least that answers that question.

--

A few days go by, but the right time never comes. It’s just… how do you do that? You know they’re ready or whatever but it’s hard to get out on a limb. But you will. Sometime. Maybe when you have wings it’ll be easier. You can’t really imagine breaking the news without wings. Because wings would be awesome.

Anyway, you do wind up getting a check in the mail from Waldric for a few thousand bucks. It’s not as much as you would’ve hoped, but it’s definitely compensation for your time, anyway. It was more of a favor than money anyway. He owes you. Or you were paying him back a favor. You don’t remember. You’re not really good at keeping track of these kinds of things. You did get a neat shielding charm thing out of the whole debacle, either way.

Schoolwork and a trip to Muir woods keeps you preoccupied. Borislav just laughs at you when you try to explain your dilemma to him, so there’s no help there. Isaac and Cassandra are pretty set on you and Rowan managing your own affairs, and the advice they offer isn’t really all that useful.

“If you’re sure you can trust them, then tell them,” Isaac tells you. “Just be careful. You can’t put the cat back in the bag.”
>>
If we had the Belphegoran magic be-good-at-social-stuff power, this would be so much easier.
>>
Cassandra says the same thing in another way. “You’re over thinking it. Just do what feels right.”

Stupid parent people with their stupid parental wisdom.

Before you and Rowan have a chance to get any plans set up, the Winter Formal is upon you. You were hoping to have this taken care of beforehand, but now it’s just… ugh. It’s Friday, and you’re feeling unnerved by the whole fiasco. You can’t get it out of your head!

You’re in your room, in the dark, doing Kethgi. The practiced, precise movements do something to settle your nerves, but putting everything behind you in time for the dance is impossible.

Stress: 51/100
Sanity: 94/100
Bloodlust: Rising

It’s 4:30. Baron’s going to pick you up in three hours. Plenty of time to chill out, right? But you do have to get ready at some point. Preferably before the dance.

In the dark, the shadows seem to be whispering louder than usual. Maybe they have advice or something?

>Move up to the next level of Kethgi. It’s harder, but you need something to focus on.
>Go for a run – maybe you just need to work the extra jitters out of your system.
>What you need to do is nothing. Just lay down for a while.
>Go watch TV or play video games or Harvey or something. Anything.

You take a break from your Kethgi to listen to the shadows. If anybody might have something helpful to contribute, it’s them. They’re the freaking shadows on the walls of your room. They probably know all kinds of weird crap.

You settle down and let the murmuring fill your mind.

The chorus of voices vie for your attention, but a clear note draws your attention. There are… a few like it, but the one that called you sounds distinct.

B̧e ͝still, Sierŕa̡.͏ Alļ ̢w̸il̸l be ̛we͏ll͢.̧

The tone is caring and quiet, and the words bring with them a cool feeling of peace into heart. You could swear it knows you, somehow. (-25 Stress: 26/100)

The̵ ͟ni̕ghţ app-͜ r̷͝o-̸a-͘͝c̷-̶

The voices shift, and you lose the thread of the first as another slashes into its place.

A horribly distorted version of Isaac’s voice wails in your ear. It hurts to hear. “Į̵͠ m̕͏a͝de̶ ̶̧̛ą m̵i̴͜s̀͡t͏a͞͝ke̶̵̛!͞͡͏ ̢Ì̵͟t̶͞’s ͘t̛͟ó̷o l̶̀a̕t̴è ̡͢n̴o̶͟w͞.” (-1 Sanity: 93/100)

Cassandra’s voice, barely recognizable, takes over. “̒Tͪ̒̂͂̽h̕͝i̡s͡ ͘w̸il͞l͢͢ ̧́t̡͡͠ e̷̸ͤ̄ ë̷̴́͗̐̾ͣ̏ả̅ͦͩ͊̓̈́ͭ͏aͦ̚r͞͏ ̧͜h͘͞e̵r̵ ̢̛a̢p̶̧͜ ąŗ͟t͢.͢͟ ̵̵Sh͡͏͡e̴̵͝ is̛ ̧n͝o̴̧ t͢͜͝ as ͟s͟͏t̷͡r̢̛͞-͏́o n͟g̴̸̀ ̨͜a̴̧s̷̛ y̨o͝ų͡-̷̡̕ţ̶̡h̨ i͏̵̨n̨k̴͜ ͘͜s̷h́ e̷͘--”

You brace yourself against the wave of static and shove the voices from your mind. (+9 Stress: 35/100)
>>
>Realizing that Baron is probably going to try to figure out how to make some stupid broken spell.
Place your bets on how long it takes before he starts trying to convince us that it's totally a good idea to magically split atoms.
>>
>>36848752
I guess I'd have to get pain killers for all the friction blisters on my dick.
>>
An odd quiet settles in your room. You can hear a light rustling of leaves outside. You feel out of breath, even though all you’re doing is sitting on the floor. You quickly stand and launch into an advanced Kethgi form, doing your best not to think about anything important. Like the thing that happened. Yep. You can just go back to forgetting about that. (-1 Sanity: 92/100)

You control your breathing, and manage to control your thoughts as well, focusing on the permeating calm of the first voice. Everything’s okay.

You continue through the technique, and after a while, wind up in a crane pose. You bring your claws slowly left and right, shredding unseen assailants in ultra-slow motion. You’re in the zone. (-10 Stress: 25/100)

A knock on the door interrupts you. “It’s six o’clock,” says Cassandra. “Just to let you know!”

Oh geeze. Where does the time go? You’ve got to get ready. You haven’t even taken a shower since you got home. You hurry to get all that crap taken care of, and fifteen minutes later, you wipe your hair out of your eyes so you can look yourself in the mirror.

Your skin is pale and sickly white, with black fissures crisscrossing like you were a broken windshield. You check your teeth and find they are indeed still pearly white, if a little sharp. Well. Really sharp. That’s not a problem though. Glamors take care of everything, right? You work your claws away and force your eyes to be not all black and inhuman looking, and then make sure your tail, horns, and other eccentricities are appropriately suppressed.

So now you look baseline human. That’s an important step.

Unfortunately, it’s not the only step.

Lip gloss, some eye shadow, eyeliner, and a little bit of blush.

Black dress, accentuate it with gold (just the color is fine doesn't have to be actual gold) necklace and a fancy belt.

I feel like I am missing something but I can't think of it.

Foundation seems like common sense for Sierra, in case she looses control of her skin. It'd hopefully conceal it well enough that we could get a hold of the situation again. Add some mascara to get the complete eye trifecta and we should be golden.
>>
>>36849206
Might have been the perfume, I don't have a sense of smell.

Figuring red highlights worked out last time you did one of these things, you throw some of those in for good measure. You go to do your hair in the only way you know how and… uh. It’s kind of longer. Maybe kind of longer than your experience in dealing with hair.

You’ll worry about it later. You brush your hair into submission, wrap up in a towel, and get to your room to pick through your wardrobe.

Part of your Christmas shopping was to buy yourself another dress similar to the one you uh. Misplaced, and you kind of like the style so you go with that. You wind up going with a similar scheme as to the one you went for Halloween. A dress with a jacket, along with leggings.

Or… well, seeing as you kind of have a date to the thing, you decide to be a little fancier. You add a pair of fancy arm-glove things to the ensemble. They’re not really the kind of thing you’d buy, but you were out with Moriah at the time and she just makes gloves look so cool. Whatever.

You get back into the bathroom and apply some makeup – just a touch of eyeliner, eye-shadow, mascara, and… yep. That’ll do it. Being this hot should like, you don’t know, deserve like, a medal or recognition somehow. Like a plaque. Heh.

But your hair’s looking just… normal. But wet. With highlights. You can’t just leave it the way it is. Or… can you?

Screw this, it’s your hair! It should serve its master! You grab the brush and steal Rowan’s hairspray. This is your hour.

Surprising even yourself, you don’t even take that long to get your hair whipped into shape. You almost don’t look like non-fancy Sierra. Although, there is a drawback to your impromptu style skills. You have your bangs doing the sweepy kind of cool swoosh to the side, which while alluring, leaves you blind in in one eye. Depth perception is overrated anyway.

Finishing up, you rush back to your room to check the time. You’re still good. Thirty minutes. You accessorize, adding a sweet belt and your highest pair of heels, which admittedly, don’t even qualify as high heels. You just need some kind of jewelry thing. You consult Ro on this matter.

“I can’t believe you don’t have a gold necklace,” Rowan says, rifling through her jewelry stuff. She’s looking way nice too, all in a deep brown dress and with a big flower stuck in behind her hair. Her immaculate silver hair stands out against the brown fabric. How the hell does she deal with all that hair though?

“Here,” she says, suppressing a smile as she hands you the thing.

“Thanks,” you say, snatching it from her. It’s a simple gold chain – not real gold, of course, but the whole point is there to be something on your neck to look at. You greedily hook it around your neck.

You examine yourself in the closet mirror door thing. You look pretty magical and all that jazz, as far as you can tell.

>I’m a fucking princess. Check it.
>Do I look good? Because I think I look good. Right?
>You know, I’ve actually never seen you like, dressed up before.

You turn around and look again at Rowan. She’s sitting on her bed, fussing with one of her shoes. It has little dangly things that aren’t dangling just right.

You furrow your brow. “You know, I’ve never actually seen you like, dressed up,” you say.

Rowan pauses for a moment. “Yeah. I guess I don’t dress up very often,” she says, glancing up at you before going back to her shoe.

She’s so… like, sleek and cool looking. Like she’s about to go to some premier as a star or whatever. Unfortunately, she doesn’t look like she understands this as she worries over appearance. “Well, just so you know, Ro, you don’t have to like, I don’t know, worry about your shoes,” you inform her. “You’re already way beautiful.”

Rowan looks up at you, a curious look on her face, and a subtle warm feeling within her. After an awkward moment for you, she smiles. “Thank you, Sierra,” she says.
>>
>>36850384

“Yeah. Uh.” You turn back to your reflection in an effort to change the topic. You find yourself chewing on your lip and ruining the flavored lip-gloss you’re wearing. Although, it does taste like strawberries, which makes it worth it. “Hair turned out better than I thought it would,” you comment, turning your head this way and that to see yourself from different angles. “I mean, do I look good or what? Because I’m looking pretty damn good.” You stop yourself from chewing your lip, only to start chewing the inside of your cheek instead. “Right?” (+2 Stress: 27/100)

Rowan rolls her eyes and laughs. “You look awesome,” she tells you.

You chuckle, kind of antsy for some reason. “Yeah…. So what. Do we like. Are we supposed to stay upstairs or something? Or do we just wait downstairs?”

Parties and dances, sure. Formal kinds of dances, well, you haven’t really been to too many of those.

“I think we’ll wait for Mom or Dad to call us down,” Rowan says. “I think the occasion calls for it.”

“Right,” you say, nodding to yourself. You still feel nervous. There’s no reason for it, really. It’s just Baron. Probably has something to do with the atmosphere or the whole setup or whatever. Sure is a whole lot of buildup for a lame school dance. (+3 Stress: 30/100)

“Why don’t you sit down?” Rowan asks, patting her bed next to her.

>Nah, they should be here any minute.
>I’m good. Think I’d rather stand right now.
>Heh, yeah. Good call.

Oh yeah. That’s right – you can sit down. Almost forgot. “Good call,” you say, joining Ro.

“Is everything okay?” she asks. You can feel the concern.

“Yeah yeah I’ll uh. Gotta check the glamors,” you reply. You carefully checking to make sure that you do indeed appear to be human. After about the third time checking, you change your mind and decide to stop. “Actually I’m just going to zen out for a minute.”

Rowan smiles slightly. “Go for it.”

You close your eyes and try to stop thinking about things, which works well, at least for a few minutes. (-3 Stress: 26/100)

It stops working when Cassandra knocks on the open door and leans in. “Oh! You guys look great,” she says, beaming. “Everything ready?”

With a glance, Rowan defers the question to you.
