You can make a new pocket dimension, become immortal, do whatever the hell you want before and after you blow up the sun. For most normal people the very idea of turning off the sun isn't even a serious thought. But still the temptation is there. Now, this was a rather extreme example, turning off the sun. But what if, as a wizard, you wanted to do something else? Like convert your enemy into a dog, create infinite gold, make it rain forever in one certain spot. We have these powers. It's within our capabilities and it -won't- end all life as we know it. Let us look at Asam the God of Cruelty. Before magic was given structure the Aelor known as Asam went on a murder spree. Using the chaotic old magic he killed thousands. The amount of death and destruction he caused allowed him to ascend to godhood. All it takes is one wizard with no sense of right or wrong to throw the entire system out of order. Oh, also don't try and murder everyone to become a god. That doesn't work anymore."

What if we make the gems capable of spellcasting? Instead of us using the gems energy to cast a spell, we program the spell into the gem. You get magical, rechargeable grenades that you can throw at any time, without needing to cast the spell over and over again.

Advanced form of the gems could dispell another spell and maybe even lock it inside the gem for our further use. Think of it as the Master Ball, except instead of capturing Pokemon, you capture wizard spells.
