You scribble down the last part of your morning report and lean back in your chair to stretch. You've got a telegraph line running to Major Lenier's headquarters - looking after it is Jetje's job until someone comes close enough to get stabbed in the face - and you have a small supply of machine guns and medical equipment to keep track of in case there's a serious emergency. You don't have any trained shocktroopers yet and your supply of Imperial machine gun ammunition is limited to whatever you can scrounge up after Imperial attacks, so it won't do you much good in the long term, but every little bit helps.

"Good morning." Vanessa comes into your makeshift office and puts a cup of warm coffee on your desk. "I thought you could use something warm."

"Thanks." You take a sip of the coffee. "Anything new to report."

"Nothing so far," Vanessa says. "Nothing work-related, anyway. There haven't been any attacks and I didn't spot any sign of people scouting around here."

"Let's enjoy it while it lasts," you say. "The new training grounds and armoury are ready, right?"

"I think so," Vanessa says. "They should have finished last night."

"Good," you say. "We should get prepared for the next battle while we still have time to spare."

You decide to pay a visit to the training grounds. Your team's been holed up in this tower for several days now and the exercise will do you some good.

"Let's do some training," you say. "We'll see about visiting the armoury afterwards."

"Sure," Vanessa says. "I'll just pack my equipment before we leave."

You down the rest of your coffee and head down to the first floor where Nina and Jetje are waiting. Jetje's sitting at her table, just staring at the telegraph. Meanwhile, Nina is reading a book in the corner. Neither one appears particularly enthusiastic about this job. War is strangely boring, in between all the killing.

"We're getting some training done," you say. "I don't like leaving this place unmanned, but we need to stay in shape and now is as good a time as any."

"Thank the Valkyria!" Nina sets her book aside and stands up. "I think I'm going to go crazy if I have to spend any more time in here."

"You know we'll come back right after we're done, right?" Jetje asks.

Nina just glares at her.

"Let's just get going when Vanessa gets back," you say.

Said scout walks down the stairs so after.

It's a little late for training, but you don't see any of the other regulars. You do spot some members of the local militia, but they have their own training area, so they won't get in your way.

The drill sergeant greets you as you arrive.

"Good morning, sir," he says. "How can I help you?"

"We'd like to get some training done," you say.

You decide to focus on your close-range and long-range capabilities. You practice your shooting in a series of different environments, while Jetje practices her fencing in the obstacle course. While the two of you are honing your skills, Vanessa focuses on her wilderness survival and urban warfare skills. Nina watches the three of you and occasionally offers advice so you don't wear yourselves out.

After a few hours of intense training, the four of you wander away from the training grounds and find a nice spot in the shade.

"You all really, really tired," Nina says. "Not that I would know."

"Enjoy the relaxation while it lasts," you say. "We should be deploying again soon."

"Any idea where?" Jetje asks.

"Not yet," you say. "The major thinks there's an Imperial base around the islands and he doesn't want any other attacks on Teschelbero. The minute the patrol boats find it, we'll attack it and tear it down."

"That sounds hard," Vanessa says. "Isn't it really dangerous to attack an island?"

"There's about a hundred things that can go wrong, but I'm not too worried about it," you say. "We've only got small fishing boats at our disposal, so it shouldn't be too hard to avoid the rocks and find a good spot to land."

"Break's over, ladies." You stand and brush the dirt off your uniform. "Let's see if the armoury has any new gear for us."

"I wish we could spend that prize money on something fun," Nina says.

"Equipment is fun," Jetje says. "Equipment keeps you alive. I know you didn't plan on becoming a soldier full-time, but you should learn to appreciate your gear anyway."

"I'll keep that in mind."

Sergeant Gaul has indeed set up shop in one of the warehouses by the docks. It's a messy place, but he smoothly moves from junkpile to junkpile and picks out items for his customers. He takes the payment from his current client and turns to you.

"Welcome, lieutenant," he says. "I heard you earned some ducats during the defense of Teschelbero. I don't have any weapon modifications available right now, but I do have some new weapons available, if you're interested. They're more expensive, but they have a better overall performance instead of a specific enhancement."

"I might be interested," you say. "What do you have?"

"We'll take the NAR 1900," you say.

"Are you sure?" Vanessa asks. "I thought you'd want a better sniper rifle."

"I'm fine with my current model," you say. "Besides, it's more efficient that way. We can outfit our scouts and our engineers."

"The NAR 1900 it is," Sergeant Gaul says. "Just send me a note if your team new scouts or engineers and I'll make sure you're taken care of."

"Thanks, sergeant." You hand the man his money and he returns with two rifles, which he hands to Vanessa and Nina.

The two of them check their rifles over, although Vanessa is much more excited about it than Nina is. You also grab some ammunition and maintenance equipment. That isn't part of Gaul's racket, but he likes to have maintenance supplies on hand to make things more convenient for his clients.

The four of you leave Gaul's shop and walk along the port. It's been mostly fixed up since the Imperial attack and you don't smell the dead bodies as much. The major had them buried somewhere out of the way.

"I think that's everything we had to take care of before our next mission," Jetje says. "Where are we going next?"

"You three head back to the watchtower," you say. "I'll see if the major has any news for us."

"We'll see you later then," Jetje says. "I'll be at the telegraph post in case anything happens."

The army's current command post is as crowded as the old one was. Various enlisted soldiers are running errands to and fro, while the officers are seated before the major's desk. It seems you're just in time for the briefing. You take a chair next to Captain DuLac.

"Hello again, Lieutenant de Velde," she says. "I'm glad you could join us. The major seems to be in a hurry and I was just about to send my salve to fetch you. Also, Ernestine would like you to know that unless you killed nine Imperials during the last fight, you owe her some ducats."

"So she killed eight?" You wince. "That's as many Imperials as I met on my way to the watchtower."

"I suppose you were unlucky," Elsa says. "There were a lot of troops swarming the port and most of them were just fresh conscripts."

"Whereas the team sent to the watchtower was more elite and had more fight to it," you say. "At least the bounty was worth it."

"Quantity and quality do even out eventually," Elsa says. "Ah, it seems the major is starting."

>(1/2)
>>
>>36825867
The major approaches you and spreads a map over his desk.

"We believe we've found the island that the Imperials are using as a supply post," he says. "Our patrol boat didn't notice any significant fortifications, but it can't be left undefended. At the moment, we have identified two landing areas. One of them is the beach facing south. It's an ideal spot to make land, so we assume it's defended by Imperial shocktroopers. We identified another landing spot on the western side on the island. It's very close to the forest and there aren't any good spots on the shore to set up a watch, but we suspect the Imperials will have scouts patrolling the area. I'll allow you to pick where you want your boats to land."

>"I'll take the beach. I'd prefer the direct approach."

"I'll take the forest," you say. "I'd rather sneak around."

"I'll take the beach," Elsa says. "My squad can make it work."

The other officers take their turns picking their landing spots. A few others also go for the forest, but it's large enough that you shouldn't run into them.

"Excellent," Major Lenier says. "Pick up your maps and get ready. We leave in an hour. That'll give the beach assault team enough daylight to work with, while the forest team will be able to move under the cover of darkness."

You take a map of the forest. It's not a professional map - it looks like something the major copied from the local fishermen or hunters - but it should be up to date and it indicates all the major trails. Sneaking around a forest at night is bloody dangerous, but not as dangerous as getting caught and shot in the face. You'll make it work to your advantage.

It's about time for lunch now. Your team should be eating at the watchtower and it won't take them long to get ready. You could meet with them now, or you could settle your debt to Ernestine.

You decide now is a good time to pay up.

"Captain DuLac, I might as well settle that debt now," you say. "Mind if I join your team for lunch?"

"Not at all," she says. "The more the merrier."

You follow Elsa towards the Darcsen quarter of the city. A few of them give you strange looks as you pass by, but they don't get in Elsa's way. She must be well-known in the neighbourhood by now.

"The inn we're staying at isn't much, but I didn't want to break up my team and I don't want the major on my ass for picking a fight with the locals." The grin on her face makes it clear who would win that fight.

"It's fine," you say. "Can't be worse than the watchtower."

Elsa enters her squad's in and gathers her immediate subordinates for a briefing. Meanwhile, you walk up to Ernestine's table and hold up a bill for her. She smiles.

"I thought you were avoiding me." She takes the money. "What was it, three kills? I must say, I'm a little disappointed."

"They were tougher than I expected." You sit down. "I had to order my engineer to take them out with grenades."

"Normally, I'd call you a pussy for using grenades," Ernestine says, "but I guess officers have to do what's best for their team."

"Being responsible for other people's lives does put things in perspective," you say. "Sure, we're all fighting to protect the civilians, but… it's not like I can really do anything for them directly. The best I can do is keep my team alive."

"I suppose that's how officers should be," Ernestine says. "I don't mind upping our bet, if you're interested. We're hitting the Imperial supply post, right? How about a bonus for whoever finds the enemy headquarters first? We'll call it a draw if neither of us makes it."

"What kind of bonus?"

Ernestine just smiles. "The secret kind," she says.

"Sounds fun," you say. "I just hope this operation is worth it."

"At the very least, they'll have machine guns," Ernestine says. "We might get enough to train our own shocktroopers. We should have enough people if we borrow them from the militia."

"I suppose the regiment will have to get bigger to keep up."

You order some kind of vegetable soup with croutons and stay out of Elsa's way as she briefs her team on the specifics of their mission. They'll be hitting the beach, so they have more details to work out. You, on the other hand, will have to improvise on the spot.

After lunch, you return to the watchtower to get your team prepared. You knock loudly on the door a few times to get their attention and they quickly come running.

"We have a new mission," you say. "Our patrol boats have found the Imperial base. We're going to infiltrate the island through the forest, eliminate any hostile forces we encounter and find their headquarters. We leave in half an hour, so we should make it around nightfall. We'll study the map on our way there. Understood?"

"Yes, sir!"

>(1/2)
>>
>>36827004
It doesn't take you very long to get ready and while you're the last one to reach the boats, you're technically on time. The larger squads have motorized pleasure boats at their disposal, but smaller team like yours are in rowboats. Fortunately, the militia will be doing the rowing.

"Welcome on board, sir," one of the privates assigned to your boat says. "I started rowing around the islands back when I was still a kid. We all have. We'll make sure to get you there safely."

"Thanks," you say. "Just watch our for yourselves."

While the improvised fleet heads north, you and Vanessa commit the map to memory. Jetje and Nina sit back and wait.

"Does anyone else feel weird about this?" Nina asks. "I mean, in the previous missions, we were just defending Gallia, but now, we're attacking the Empire. It just feels… different."

"Technically, the island belongs to Gallia, so we're still defending our country," Jetje says. "Besides, it's not like it really matters. Soldiers fight. It's what we do."

"I guess so," Nina says. "What do you think, lieutenant?"

"We have to counterattack eventually," you say. "If we don't make the Empire bleed, they'll just attack us again. This is another way to protect Gallia."

Nina sighs.

"I suppose you're right," she says. "Let's just get this mission over with."

The boats heading towards the forest separate from the rest of the fleet and take a long detour to remain hidden. They circle around other islands to reach the objective and to give more time for the beach assault fleet to raise a ruckus and draw the enemy's attention. As you make your approach, the forest comes into view and you hear the sound of battle coming from the beach.

The rowers bring your boat as close to the shore as they can and you disembark. The sun is setting. It's time to get to work.

"Remember, our objective is to find the enemy's headquarters and eliminate any patrols we find along the way. Now…"

"Kreuss, you and I are moving first under cover," you say. "Sorry, Leifstel, but it looks like you'll be hanging back for this one."

"So long as the mission gets done, sir."

You motion for Kreuss to head forward and guide you through the forest. She has greater mobility and moves swiftly from cover to cover, while you naturally move between sniper spots, which slows down your movements. However, this is Gallian soil. You have the advantage here, even if you're not all that familiar with the island. Combined with the darkness of the night, it's unlikely that the Imperials will be able to spot you. Whether or not you can spot them, however, is a separate matter.

Simple. If they wore helmets, players would have harder time telling the person, AND would be staring at a helmet which de-personifies the character. From a game design perspective, a helmet is a bad idea.

Both you and Kreuss stop when you hear Imperial soldiers talking loudly nearby. Kreuss hides behind a tree, while you crawl under some bushes. Through your scope, you see four Imperial scouts walking along a trail, completely oblivious to your presence.

"You'd think the captain would have us reinforce the beach," one of the soldiers says. "I need money to send back home."

"Just be quiet and keep patrolling," another soldier says. "Look at it this way, you're being made to do nothing. That's not so bad, right?"

These are probably the worse scouts you've ever seen. There are four of them, so they have you outnumbered, but you have the element of surprise. You could get the rest of your team, but you might lose the Imperials in the meantime, or they might meet up with reinforcements. You can't call out to Kreuss either, but you trust her to follow your lead.

You line up your shot, the same as always. You track the lead scout, the one that shouldn't be in Kreuss' line of sight given her current angle, and follow his gait and pace. You wait for him to completely turn his back to you and pull the trigger. Your bullet flies through the forest, followed quickly by Kreuss' own barrage.

The Imperials panic and scream. They fire into the forest, but they don't aim anywhere near you. It's hard for you to confirm your kills in all the chaos, but the Imperials weren't expecting your attack. You couldn't have missed. Two of the Imperials are either dead or bleeding significantly.

The Imperial you shot is down. You can't tell if he's dead yet, but it's clear he's not moving under his own power any time soon. A second Imperial is currently suffering from a few gut and leg wounds. The Imperials are immobilized unless they want to leave their comrades behind and make a run for it.

On top of that, Leifstel and Stroheim will have heard your shots in the forest. They'll be on their way. If you can hold out long enough, victory will be yours.

The Imperials quickly recover from your attack and take a position behind the trees. You can still get a decent shot at them, and Kreuss' position should be fine as well, but they have a general idea of where you are right now.

pfft, you can A rank any scenario in the game without even being hit with proper abuse of the aiming time and invisible corners. Besides this isn't based entirely on the mechanics of VC or we'd be doing all kinds of stupid gamey stuff.
>>
>>36827836
You're practically burrowing into the dirt, you're in a bush and the sun has set. If one of those scouts can shoot you, he fucking deserves it. Besides, Kreuss can't easily move from her current position and you don't want to leave her behind.

You line up a shot against an Imperial who happens to be aiming in your general position. The sound of your sniper rifle is soon met by another burst of fire from Kreuss.

Your bullet hits hard enough to send your target tumbling back. You hear the remainder of Kreuss' barrage, but it ends quickly. After that, there is nothing but silence. You wait for the Imperials to do something, but they stay there. You figure they're all dead, but you can't move safely until you've confirmed the kill and you're not in a position to do that at the moment.

Fortunately, your scout has you covered.

"Lieutenant, the Imperials are all dead," Kreuss says. "It's safe to keep moving."

You climb out of your hiding spot and confirm that the Imperials are all dead. That's two more kills for you. It's just a shame that there aren't any vital shots. They must have all bled out.

You hear someone coming from behind, but it's only Leifstel and Stroheim.

"We heard the fight, sir," Leifstel says. "I'm guessing it's over."

"Four dead Imperials," you say. "Since they were following the trail, it must lead to their headquarters. We can just retrace their footsteps."

"We could travel through the woods and stay near the trail," Vanessa says. "It'd be slower, but we'd stay under cover."

Sadly not really, I don't have a PSP so have only emulated them but out of the three I enjoyed the original VC the best. It's a great game but really suffers from a few issues. Being forced to deploy Rosie, Largo and Alicia to play optimally is damn annoying and keeping force size to a minimum and massively buffing one character is the best way to play.

>>"Let's just follow the trail back. Leifstel can lead."

I take the best of the first three. For multiple attribute rolls, I take the best individual roll across each set. For damage, I take the highest total.

"Let's just follow the trail back," you say. "Leifstel can lead. The scouts were talking loud enough for me to hear them while they were out patrolling for enemies, so I don't think the Imperial forces here are quite as good as the ones we fought at Teschelbero."

"Yes, sir," Leifstel says. "Follow me."

The trail is well-beaten and marked by a series of posts. It's impossible to get lost. It also leads, as you predicted, right to the enemy's headquarters. It's a makeshift camp, all out in the open aside from a cheap tent that serves as the commander's office. You also see lots and lots of crates around. Along with the enemy's commander.

The Imperial commander is a giant of a man, easily over seven feet tall. He's covered in the heavy metal armour of a fencer and his shield and sword are both nearly as tall as he is. Fortunately, he hasn't noticed you yet.

>"Corporal Leifstel, I believe this is the job for you."

"Corporal Leifstel, I believe this is the job for you," you say.

She just stares at you. So does the rest of the team.

"You want me to charge at this one fencer who looks like he can take on a bear!"

"That's right."

"Yes, sir!"

She gleefully turns towards the enemy commander and charges at him while laughing maniacally. The Imperial immediately realizes that there is a crazy Gallian woman running after him, but fencers aren't that mobile no matter where they're trained. He can't get away from you.

For the moment, you'll allow Leifstel to test her mettle. You can always intervene if things go wrong.

Absolutely nothing goes wrong.

Leifstel immediately closes in on the Imperial, sidesteps his pre-emptive attack and buries her sword in his neck, severing his arteries. Blood spurts out from the wound a few times, but it's quickly exhausted and the enemy commander falls dead.

"Ah, it feels good to get into a real swordfight," Leifstel says. "Fighting people with guns proves that fencers are still relevant, but nothing compares to a good fencing match. Too bad it didn't last long."

"I am completely satisfied with this outcome, corporal," you say. "For now, let's check the loot."

You open up a few crates to check their content. They are packed with Imperial machine guns and bullets. It's not a steady supply line, but the regiment might be able to use this to train quite a few shocktroopers. It'll certainly make things easier for you.

You also found several Imperial documents. You can't tell the details, but you're sure the major will make good use of them. In the meantime, northern Gallia is a little more secure.

"Our mission is officially accomplished," you say. "Just stay on watch until our comrades can join us."

"Yes, sir!"
