Welcome back to Mysteries of the Atlas Quest! Last time, the full moon rose over the eerie farmhouse our heroes took up residence in. Mana filled the air, and the moon turned a menacing bloody red. Now, as they investigate the seemingly deserted barn, they find themselves face to face with the host of the dead.

You are Anai, an Atlas User, and you really had to say something, didn’t you? It seems whatever sick sense of humor the universe employs just loves to rain on your parade. In this case, with the reanimated bodies of a few farmhands and what look like dismembered cattle now shuffling down the staircase you had just vacated. They appear to have cut off your entrance. There are about 7 of them in total, minus the farmhand that Winter is currently occupied with decapitating right next to the both of you. His swing only seems to slow it down however, the body still slowly scraping to its feet. Seems like they’re rather persistent. Niccolo appears at the end of the aisle behind you, and motions to the rear exit. It seems you have two options.

You tug on Winter's coat, urging him to follow you out the back. He seems puzzled for a minute until you flick a small amount of fire at the hay littering the ground. He then vacates the building rather quickly. You and Niccolo shut the rear door behind you and he starts throwing fire at the upper floors. Seems like the old elf wasn't going all out in your battle before. The lower floor appears to be your job, so you step back, taking a deep breath, and remember your lessons with Maria.

You manage to unleash a gout of fire, and as the magical flames leave your body they start to grow and take on a life of their own. Niccolo seems tired, and can’t manage much of his own, but it quickly becomes clear that your spell is more than enough as the side of the barn begins to burn in earnest. Now the only remaining task at hand would be to close them in from the other side of the barn.

You are NOT having any of it, and you let this guy know it. You leap back and send out a jet of fire, slamming into the zombie and blasting him back to the barn door, where he promptly catches fire and ceases to move. You begin to hear the screams of undead agony from inside as the remaining number of zombies begin to burn alive, weakly pushing at the doors.

You turn to survey the rest of the battlefield. There isn't much standing between you and the house, and in the distance you can make out some movement headed towards it from the pastures. In the corn fields beyond the house you can hear faint yelling, and see an occasional flash of white-blue light. The moon as ever hangs low in the sky, seeming larger than life, with not a single star in the sky. You briefly wonder about that, since you haven't noticed stars out any other night either.

You decide to head for the cornfield, reasoning that anything putting up a fight against these things is probably worth saving. You run over, taking care to not be too noticeable as you push into the impromptu corn maze.

The yelling draws closer, and the flashes of lights are now accompanied by a high pitched electric buzzing. The voice stops its movement, and the flashes increase in intensity. Then, out of the silence between flashes, you hear a blood-curdling scream, a little girly by definitely male, and it seems familiar.

You don't stop to think about who it is, rushing through the corn until you reach an opening. You remember where you've heard that voice before, and your blood runs cold.

Sure enough, sitting propped against a scarecrow's base, one of his own Corpse Hounds chewing on his arm, lies the Necromancer. He is desperately trying to fight off the hound who has a firm grasp of his arm, which still arcs with electricity. He is panicked and flailing, trying to pull away from his bleeding wound in abject terror.

He might be a murderer, but right now he needs help. It's kind of pathetic watching him scream like a girl as his arm is slowly gnawed off. You'll deal with him when there's no immediate undead threat.

As the hound finishes its ill-advised lunge, you respond by slipping behind it, and impaling it through the base of the skull. You are certain you've done damage this time, as after a bit of twitching, it stops moving. You slowly withdraw your sword from the mass of blackened flesh, and stride over to the Necromancer. You use the tip of your sword to direct his attention to you, and remind him that you still haven't decided he's worth saving. He looks at you with a mix of lingering fear, and adoration. He tries to gather himself together, now that his arm has stopped bleeding. Seems you've made an impression.

You are VICTOR REGINRAVE, (most likely former)Necromancer and Huntsman of the Khorvan Empire, and you may have overdone it. You had been trying to make a good impression with an overwhelming display of force, and hey, you were tasked with killing seven heavily armed soldiers riding freaking wumpuses. It didn't hurt to be a bit over-prepared. Though maybe animating the entire farm staff and most of the cattle was unnecessary. There was no way you could have known the full moon's effects would render your undead self-propagating, and release them from your control.

The bright side of this whole ordeal, even with the massive panic attacks seeing your own blood gave you, is you are now standing face to sword with your bronzed Valkyrie goddess. You should probably give her a reason not to kill you. Atlas said the first step to falling in love is getting to know eachother after all.

Ok Victor, keep it together, Atlas said you can't just go around spouting poetry and ballads, so try the rational way out.

"Because you wouldnt kill an unarmed man?" you crack an uncertain smile.

She doesn't seem amused by the answer, and presses the blade a little further.

"Ah aha ok uhh...You could ransom me and my Atlas to the Empire for a lot of money?" Strike two.

Running out of ideas you just blurt the next thing that comes to mind.

"W-well I didn't intend to create a riot of hungry ghouls, the full moon made the magic go haywire...I just wanted to assemble a force that would impress you!" you breathe and continue, "Plusyouneedmetostoptheghoulsorelsethiswillbecomeawasteland." you squeak out.

Well, that certainly got a response, albeit a confused one.

Really, you're beginning to stop being surprised by all of this. You give him a long hard look, and sigh. "Of course. Not like it could've been anything simple. Fine, hurry up, but if you try anything without my say so, you're done. Especially zombies. Don't make zombies to fight zombies. I hope you've learned a lesson from this, now tell me how to stop these things."

Geeze, you'd think you'd just given him a new puppy or something the way his mood cranks up to 11. He starts speaking at the speed of light about advanced magical formulas and focuses, so you put your sword up to his lips to shush him. "The Common version please. How do we stop the zombies?"

"Well, there should be one acting as a conduit. Probably the one that stole all my Onyx. If you stop that one the others should fade fairly quickly." he states.

"Well that doesn't sound so bad, how will we find it?" you inquire.

"Oh that's easy. It's the big one currently moving towards the house."

You hear Victor mumble something dreamily that sounds suspiciously like your name, before a series of magical incantations and a lightning bolt streaks over your head to join your fireball. THAT got it's attention. Both your spells hit hard and the beast, which you now see has a human torso sticking out of its back with several crystals glinting in the firelight, bellows in pain. It turns to you, being the closer target and the one that hurt more, and charges you with its massive horn.

You deftly avoid the charging beast, leaping up and over its charge and throwing a fireblast at it in passing, but it seems that you do little more than singe the long hairs hanging off its blackened form. Victor likewise accomplishes nothing, as his lightning strike, significantly weaker than the last, impacts dirt near the creature. The human-looking torso levels a blast of dark energy at you, an ominous cloud of shadows forming around its hand.

It thinks that shadowy bolt is going to hit you. That's cute. You center yourself, bringing your hands up into a boxer's guard, and let out a hard left hook which propels a jet of flame right through the oncoming attack, and blows a hole straight through the torso, incinerating the gems embedded in it. You let out a deep breath, and you could swear you hear Victor swoon. The beast crumples to the ground, slowly burning to ashes. The moon's red hue slowly fades away, and the approaching group of zombie livestock coming from the pastures slowly stumbles and becomes inanimate.

We're hard to get. Too hard for him.

Tell Victor we aren't interested. And bind his hands he's coming with us for information on his empire. Then check on your friends.
>>
>>36807751
I don't think we'll need to bind him I think he'll just sort of blindly follow us wherever we go so long as we don't chase him off.
>>
>>36807781
So long as our ass is pointed in his direction he'll slowly move towards it at a constant rate.

You sigh heavily, knowing what comes next. You're gonna have to talk to the weird maniac with no apparent value on human(or animal for that matter) life.

He's waiting for you, and he immediately begins praising you. "Astounding! Magnificent! You're simply a force of nature! Truly you are a Valkyrie given mortal form!" he exclaims.

Yeah, definitely weird. "Look Victor, what exactly is your deal with me? We met and tried to kill eachother, then you show up here in a field of corn screaming like a girl, and help me out? What gives?"

"W-well...I was hoping if it wouldn't be objectionable, that you might be my prisoner? You'd have whatever my generous Imperial salary could buy you, access to my personal library, you could help me do experiments...Oh! And you could help me find Anton. About 6'1", whiteish grey hair, really cold expression? What do you say?" he grins sheepishly.

Well, nice as that sounds, gonna have to do with no on the imprisonment part. Still, he does seem to have at least some redeeming factors, and those lightningbolts looked like they hurt. Plus, an inside man in the Empire. Maybe you can benefit from this?

>Hah, no.
>Uhh...maybe? Not the prisoner part but your friend sounds familiar...
>How about you be MY prisoner?

Well, we HAVE the murdohobo stalker part. Just not the ally part.

To be honest, I kinda want a character that fits in as a creepy stalker version of team rocket nipping at our heels every now and then

You try to resist the urge to laugh in his face. You fail. After a good fit of laughing that he just seems a little confused about, you lay out your terms.

"Gonna have to go with no on the prisoner deal, Vic. You said it yourself, I'm a Valkyrie, and what kind of Valkyrie gets taken prisoner?" He nods, the statement making perfect sense to him, but still not quite understanding.

You sigh again. "Ok, clearly that arrangement won't work, so how about this, you be MY prisoner? You travel with us, help us do...whatever it is we end up doing, I help you find your friend, and you stop randomly killing people to make zombies. Deal?"

He nods enthusiastically. "After tonight, I wasn't going to practice again anyway, too many variables. Dark magic is always that way, very chaotic and prone to accidents. It's not suitable for field work outside the labs. I will absolutely agree to your terms! The only reason I worked for that creepy Minister in the first place is he said I'd find Anton if I did."

You wonder for a moment how strange the Minister must be for Victor of all people to be creeped out by him. You are about to continue to tell him his friend sounds a lot like Winter, your resident grumpy gus, when Maria comes flying out of the house and tackles you. <I am so glad you are safe! What happened?!> she cries.

<It's a long story, I'll tell you in a min->

"Shit." Winter grumbles from the open doorway.

Victor looks past you and Maria to the doorway. His face lights up like the Anubian Sun.

"ANTON!!"
Yep, looks like you're stuck with him.

Sesmu also needs some loving. Smart Sesmu is love.
>>
>>36808397
Also can we use our knowledge of fire and air to make lightning?
>>
>>36808499
depends. does Victor have fire and wind?

Alternately, why not just learn lightning from him?
>>
>>36808539
We trust him the least out of all of them and he might try to cop a feel while teaching us?
>>
>>36808499
You could especially after seeing it in practice, you can also have Victor teach it to you for the more advanced levels.

>>36808497
I'll get Sesmu some exp by next thread, he really hasn't had much opportunity to do things by virtue of being a good boy and doing guard duty or being stabled for three threads.

>>36808470
This would be all your points

>>36808497
You're a bit short to do any two of those at a time right now, but one of them could be upgraded, and you could increase skills or other things.

>>36808567
Magic training isn't very hands on, and he IS the most academically minded out of all of you. He might still creep a little until his Atlas beats the concept of boundaries into him.
>>
>>36808567
I felt his admiration was more a like, total admiration and reverence one.

A valkyrie is kind of like, almost a literal goddess. You wouldn't "accidentally" fondle a goddess.
>>
>>36808582
Alright. Spending on SMART it is then, I'll go with whatever other people want for the rest of the exp
>>

Magic is at 4

Anai's Magic is 4, Smart is 3. It's technically lower. The difference is usage. Anai only uses smart for magical to-hit and will saves, she isn't really down with the mathematics and sciences. Magic on the other hand is rapidly becoming her preferred method of wrecking everything forever.

Seems like everyone can agree on rank 2 Fire Magic. Your two options are then as such:

>Upgrade Smart to 4, and Purchase level 1 Lightning.
Smart is a useful skill for making knowledge checks or common sense rolls(for example, smart+notice to see or remember details) It factors into Will Saves, and Magical To-hit.

>Upgrade Magic to 5.
Magic is a catch all for improving your magical combat. It ups your MP, Magical To-Hit, and Magic Damage. it'll also help you detect magic phenomena using your Magic+Notice stat, modified by smell or hearing if applicable.
