It's the middle of the day, and the forest is as alive as ever.
Birds and bugs and animals, every noise imaginable floats on the warm breeze.

You aren't even talking about your friends.

The sun is high overhead, and while the riverside offers a clear path to walk, it isn't doing much in the way of shade. Which is fine with you, really. But some of your friends aren't as fireproof.

Lann is wiping sweat slick strands of her hair from her face, grumbling about the heat. Sara has produced a sun hat from a pouch, though she still seems to be huffing and puffing as she walks.
It might be time to call for a meal and a rest soon.

The river bends, slows.
You've made it past the rapids- The roar of the waterfall is distant now, and the water is clear. The foam and the hiss of rushing water are fading with each step.

There is the sound of frogs, though. You sidestep, leaning over the shore to look.

Nope, just regular frogs.

You are mildly alarmed that animal sounds now provoke you to check for monster people, but that's probably just going to have to be a thing from now on.

Just ahead, you spot shallows in the river- The sand sparkling beneath the surface, a slow slope from the forest floor into the water.
That should work.

>Get that boat into the water. Ship. Whatever. There's progress to be made.
>Call a break. Get some food and shade. It's probably going to take some work to get the boat moving upstream.
>Have people rest up while you hunt. No need to dip into rations just yet.

Ask Sara to weave together a sheet of silk, and Lann to collect some branches. They can put together a sunroof for the boat while we hunt for food.

A look at your sister's flagging face is all you need to make a decision.

"We will stop here, yes? I will find us something to eat."
Sara nods graciously, skittering into the shade with Lann close behind, and you set the boat down a few steps from the river.
You haven't come all this way to lose it.

You head past them, for the forest- But you pull up short, turning as the trees grow thicker.
"Nin, Jin, please keep an eye out, yes? Guard everyone while I am gone."
Jin nods from her roost overhead, and Nin snaps into a picture perfect salute, which just leaves you wondering where the hell she learned that.

"Sara-"
"Yes?"
"If you can, try and weave a thick square of silk, yes. We'll use it for shade on the river."
Her eyes light, and she nods eagerly, reaching behind herself to start. Lann nods her thanks, a waterskin to her lips already, and a few arrows plunged into the ground to be drawn swiftly if needed.

Satisfied with the preparations so far, you vanish into the woods.
In a fairly literal sense, too.
You're not one to brag(often), but you've gotten much better at sneaking.

You breeze through the woods, honing all your senses to the vibrations of the earth as you move.
It feels odd now, to be hunting alone.
Not nearly as comfortable.

You shake it off as you pick up a few traces of movement.
Ahead, right. Closer, closer-

You shuffle silently into cover, your body neatly concealed by the brush.
The space between trees is wider ahead, and a small herd of the multi-eyed deer are moving through, hooves snapping branches and dry leaves beneath them.

Three... Maybe four would be best? Even if it's just a snack, you could probably take the leftovers with you.
A little voice giggles in the back of your head. 'Leftovers'.

Shut up. You're a growing spider.

The deer are alert- maybe they've smelled you, or maybe it's just their nature.
If you only needed one or two you'd just burst through the trees like some sort of horror movie monster, but you have more mouths to feed than just your own.

All this means that you're crawling along at clip that frankly disappoints you, stopping and barely breathing as the godsdamn deer twist and freeze, ears pointing in every direction.

And then they start moving again, and you start moving again, and the cycle continues.

It takes you a solid half hour to creep past them, setting yourself- and a giant web- in their path.
After that, of course, nature took over.

And by nature, you mean you dropped out of a tree behind them, roaring and screaming, sending the herd scattering, and more than a few straight into your web.

One poor deer bolted the second you landed, planting both its feet firmly into a thick set of roots- where its momentum carried it straight into the dirt, and it snapped its own neck.

You'd feel bad, but you're pretty hungry, and that is awfully convenient.

You dispatch the trapped deer, hurl them over your shoulder and head straight back to the river. In that respect, you can't really get lost, even in the unexplored pieces of forest- You can smell the river, feel it in the earth, hear the whispered tones of water shifting over stone.

You're back quickly enough, and everyone sets themselves to the task of eating.

Sheszka sleeps through it all- you wrap a few select pieces so she can eat when she wakes. The wolf girl has a folded piece of silk lying across her forehead- cool, damp, and you can smell the distinct scent of healing powder.

Your hand across her hair sets the little moth flinching, though she melts into your hand in seconds.
You lean down and pull her into a hug as she turns to face you, whispering.
"Thank you, yes?"
"Ah- I- ah-"
>>
>>36782384
The pale moth is blushing, stuttering, not even looking you in the eyes. You pat her head again as you pull yourself up.
"Did you think I wouldn't notice? I know what you have done for her, yes."
She follows you as you clean up after your companions, helping quietly.

Weak to surprise praise.
You make note of it. You'll probably need it sooner or later.

A few packed bodies later, your new boat is sitting on the shoals as your friends load themselves in, pending your efforts to shove it into the river proper.

Which, really, begs the question: How are you planning to head upstream?

>You've got paddles. Hard work or not, You're getting to the lakes.

The speed of each method is beside the point. Would you choose a speed-boat engine with just enough fuel to last an hour, or an old motor that could last as long as you need?

You shoo your friends to the front of the boat- it's more of a barge, really.
Which is pretty much ideal for a river, you suppose.

A push sees your skiff set out on it's maiden voyage- is skiff the right word? Or does that refer to a specific sort of-
Okay, that's enough.

You climb up into the back of the boat, rocking the whole thing gently between you and your front seated passengers. It stays afloat though. Waterproof, even.
A critical boat element. You take a paddle, and Sara, of all people, takes another.

Between the two of you, the current doesn't stand a chance. You sail down the slowly curving river, pitting your muscles against the flow of water.
You are a giant spider.

Your sister, however, is less of a giant spider, by a rather significant margin.
Comparing her to you might be a bit unfair.

Lann takes up the paddle- she's a bit limited compared to an arachne, but every bit helps.
You burn her out in an hour and a half.

The sun is starting to dip, and you've stowed the oars- It's easier to work with a pole, standing tall at the back of the boat by yourself. Your arms are burning, but your breath is even. It's...

Well, you don't know the area. You don't know how far you've come, though your instincts seem to be telling you you're far from home.

Which is now something of a problem.
You're far from home, and night is falling- and you aren't in the arachne's part of the forest any more.
You have a sick wolf- though she did wake and eat, thank gods- an exhausted half elf and a tired arachne.

Which leaves you with yourself, a moth and a harpy.
You need a plan.

>Take your boat and head up a tree. It could be a temporary nest, if not comfortable.

You spot a decent looking tree, and drive your boat into the shoreline, the sudden grind jostling your friends back to wakefulness.

You don't get much help setting up your sleeping arrangements- Sara's silk was mostly spent earlier, and as tired as she is, you arent sure she could weave straight.

You tuck the boat into a thick set of branches overhead, weaving above and below alike, forming a slightly softer floor and a few light walls. You haul your less vertically incline friends into the impromptu nest, thought you leave Sara's canopy on the floor below.

Blankets and food are passed out in equal measure, though you still end up as the centrepiece- everyone is curled against you, one way or another.

You let loose a yawn of your own, and lean back over your shell.
Not your favourite way to sleep, but definitely the least space consuming.

_________________________________________________________

You wake a few times in the night- The breeze carrying scents of creatures unknown, rather than the reassuring smell of our family home. Sara shivers a bit in her sleep as howls echo in the woods, and you pull her closer, listening to her breath calm as she clutches at your arm.

You let yourself fall back asleep to the slow sway of the leaves in the night air.

You wake again- a few hours later, by the moon. Dawn is nearing, but there's a smell below, a sound you don't quite like.
Shifting people in every direction, you manage to lean you head over edge of your nest, and are greeted by by luminous eyes, surrounding the base of your tree.

There's a darkness around them that defies your vision- You can't make out the shifting forms flowing over the ground below. Your eyes narrow, your heart beating faster as you get ready...

>>
>>36784454
I don't think we've actually voted on a headpat in quite a while.
>>
>>36784436
Not really. Loud in relation to their actual number, I guess. Thats why I mentioned votes as measurement, its when we get the strongest indication of what people that follow the quest actually want, since outside of that its really only the most opinionated that talk about it.
>>
>>36784487
But we haven't actually voted on headpats since long before people started getting tired of them and anti-headpat sentiment occurred.

And we have a continuous theme of "taunt the moth", rather than "pamper the moth", whenever votes occur.
>>
You need to leave early in the morning.
You are tired, and far from home, and everything is waking you up all the godsdamn time and YOU WILL NOT TOLERATE STUPID EYES.

You've already started hissing- not just the sinister release of air slipping past your fans, but your tufts, your face is heating up, and the air around you is starting to try and escape.

The noises below, slow, stop.
The eyes turn to meet your gaze.

You click, hiss- and some ungodly cross between a furious spider's clattering collides with the sounds of fire spitting, earth cracking. The ground below trembles, the eyes standing transfixed by your fury.

Your lips peel back, your jaw opens, steam and fury pouring out, catching the light of your blazing shoulders, illuminating your face in a single, hazy moment of monstrous fury.

Whatever has circled your nest wants no part of this- eyes crash into each other in the shadows below, crawling atop each other in an attempt to flee your anger.

You snort as the last trails of shadow vanish into the bushes, letting go of your heat and leaning back into the nest.

"Lyyy- Lyyyrrrrra? Waasit?"
"Nin? It is nothing, yes. Go back to sleep."
"Mmmmmkay."
The moth nestles back against you, and you close your eyes. Hopefully you can catch a few hours uninterrupted.

_________________________________________________________

The morning light wakes you, the same as always. It isn't home, but there's work to be done.
You start to rouse your friends, poking each in turn till you've freed yourself from their grasp.

The plan is simple-
Get the boat down, get some food in everyone, and get going.
>>
>>36784464
>>36784522

When Nin evolved was the last time, actually.
Wasn't even a direct option, it won by loud public approval.
>>
>>36784545

Sara ferries each member of your team down to the ground as you slice the boat free of your webbing. You'll have to eat a lot to replace all this.

There's a lack of conversation below, so you pick up the pace, dropping from the tree with your boat, raising a questioning eyebrow to your sister. She simply points behind you, and you turn-

The bottom of the tree is surrounded by food. Wolves, a pair of deer, rabbits and more are piled against the trunk. You start to laugh.
Tribute.
The creatures left tribute.

Your good mood lasts all through breakfast, despite- no, all the more so because of your friends confusion.
It isn't long before your pushing off again, canopy firmly anchored over your companions as you set sail.

You've got a bit of extra energy, and a lot of extra Lyra fuel- maybe you can take a shot at something different?

Jin *has* been quiet hasn't she. I miss her squaking. maybe if we have her reaction/feelings to Sheszka getting poisoned.
>>
>>36784680
Yep, I did.
Because I've been in conversations where me and many other anons have said "we're sick of that headpatting".

Don't be so quick to say people are an incredible minority or don't exist just because they don't want to constantly be the fun police. It's entirely possible to not like something, but not feel the need to remind people every single time it comes up like you suggest.
>>
>>36784637
>so we should be reticent to determine "vocal support" as an indicator
Which is exactly what I said yes.
Votes are the only way to come close to determining this kind of thing, since otherwise only people that care really hard bother to talk about it.
But since only very rarely people complain, and the headpatting and indulging Nin is definitly very visually present in the thread, that does lend credence to the assumption that it is very popular.
Does it prove that? No. But we don't really know either way, so its the only indication we have.

>>36784587
It doesn't take yelling to make once opinion known, not sure why you jump to extremes like that. It completly suffices to add something to that effect to your vote if you disapprove of a certain trend. A single comment is all it takes.
You can have and express a opinion without attacking others for theirs.
I know, kinda unbelievable on /tg/, but it can happen.

Can we set Lann and Sara to making a big kite, and anchoring it to the barge with spider silk?
Then Jinn can take the kite up high enough to catch some wind, and help pull the barge along.

It probably won't be enough to move the barge on its own, but combined with Lyra pulling/pushing with a pole, it should make it easier.
>>
>>36784768
Anon, you sort of have to yell if you wish to be as loud as the people who are actually having a good time.

Because people having a good time yell and take up a lot of space with discussion on how much they like a thing.

That kind of policy would make an incredibly unfriendly quest.
>>
>>36784818

>>
>>36784855
I would assume you have some interesting reason for not wanting headpatting thats worth talking about in a civilized fashion.
If it really amounts to" I happen to not like this thing other people like", then I see no reason why that needs mentioning. I dislike a lot of things that happen in any given quest, but I realise it as my personal taste and don't bring it up unless I have a real reason for it.

People on the internet have a habit for hyperbole, its a thing. The "many" conversation proves that sufficently. Maybe we should just not take every word serious as written and rather look at the intent, which in his case was to say that some people, him included are in favor of these things.

Gentlemen, I bring you science! Granted this would have been much more useful science earlier, but I bring you science nonetheless. Trying to figure out how to balance the boat most perfectly, I calculated the weight of each of the monster girls in the quest, using suitable natural comparisons and extrapolating based off size and a 1.5 factor on some for added bone density/people parts being added on.

That said, the weights (by my estimates), would be as follows.
> Lyra: 716kg (assuming 8 foot length on spider body)
She is roughly the size of a draft horse and a little heavier due to her chitin
> Sara: 60 kg (assuming 4 foot length on spider body)
Tiny sister is best sister
> Jin: 30kg (assuming 5 foot body length)
> Shezka/Lann: 70kg apiece
Because they are roughly human
> Nin: 4.5kg (assuming that she is 1.5 feet tall)

According to buoyancy, a raft sized to carry everyone would need to be about 12 feet by 5 feet. Lyra being in front would case the raft to tip an entire 4 inches forward, meaning she should realistically have to sit in the center.
>>
back and writing!
>>

Definitly not. She is not that much smaller. She is smalle than the rest of the giant spiders, but she is only slightly smaller than our brothers.
For a girl of her approximate maturity, 60kg are already pretty close.
>>
>>36786064

>>
>>36786056

For shame.
>>
>>36786056

Very sorry. Americans don't know how to conceptualize a meter for the most part. I'm an engineer, so fuck the American system, but I figured it would help some folks visualize things better. I just didn't feel like shifting kilo's to pounds. Proper raft dimensions would be 1.5mx4m if it makes you feel better. The vessel would sit at 18cm deep in the water.
>>
>>36786120
That would of helped if it were not for the fact that I AM American. I appreciate your effort, though.

>>36786063
And that's perfectly fine. I'm going to give it a look, then.
>>
>>36786093

I couldn't remember how big Sara was, or how big we were pre-widow evolution. If you'll recall, REQM said she didn't grow much at all when she evolved from her base evolution, though her shell changed color.

Before that, I think of us as being kid sized, which would make Sara adorably chibi sized still. It's possible that she would be six feet by six feet, which would make her as tall as your average person, but I found the modest height more amusing.
>>
>>36785990
You get definitly thumbs up for effort from me.

Especially Sara in comparison to Lyra.

I only look at the minutes on the post, not the hours, so I come back after being away for a while, forget whether or not I refreshed, see the minutes and think 'Okay, I'm in time' and then everything goes terrible and I want to close the thread out of embarrassment.

Please don't hate me

To begin with, I used the huntsman spider, a species known to have a central body length of roughly one inch and a total body mass of 0.54 grams. Taking that base scale dimension and scaling it by 48 (48 inches in 4 feet), I know that the total increase of Sarah's mass should be 48 cubed, because the scale acts on three dimensions.

Multiplying her mass as such, I get something like 40kg. However, unlike a real spider, Sara has a girl's torso on top. The cube squared law also means she would likely need denser "bones" to stand properly. I am no doctor of medicine, so I simply used a 1.5 times scale from here.

As for the discrepancy between her and Lyra, Lyra is just much bigger than she is. The 2 times scale becomes an 8 times factor in weight gained.
>>
>>36785990
I think Nin is bigger then that, probably 3 1/2 to 4 feet tall. Very cool though.
>>
>>36785990
I don't think Nin is 1.5 feet tall
>>
>>36786346
>However, unlike a real spider, Sara has a girl's torso on top.
Which you calculated for only 20kg?
Thats very low, she is only missing her legs, so she should have at least twice that.

I would hav thought the difference would come from the giant skull, because Lyra is not nearly twice as large as her sister.
>>
>>36786346

Ah, it would seem that Sara would actually be heavier than my original estimate. I did not include the factor for weight because 90kg seemed excessive. Under that, she would weigh 90 kg or her spider weight, plus the roughly 30 kg of human weight and/or extra muscle, bone, etc.
>>
>>36786346
I'm kind of wondering if Lyra weighing just under the weight of a Clydesdale would affect her ability to climb trees.

You spend a quick moment searing a simple apology into the trunk of your tree.
You don't know if they speak, let alone forest language, but it never hurts to try.

You grab the mooring ropes at the front of your boat, urging the earth to meet your feet beneath the water's surface, arranging your friends so the boat floats properly on the surface.

And with the ropes over one shoulder- and your friends laughing behind you, despite your mission- you take your first step as a glorified tugboat.

Jin hops to the bow, perching there like a figurehead.
A mermaid would probably work better. And Jin is the wrong kind of harpy for boats, anyway. Not that people on boats want the right kind of harpy around, but-

"Lyra?"
"Hmm? Yes?"
"Why was there food beneath the tree, yes?"
"Ah. Something was sneaking about in the night, yes? And it woke me up."
"Yes?"
"I may have growled a little. To scare them off."

Lann is starting to laugh, now, while Jin looks between the two of you.
"Did... did you scare something so bad that it brought you food just so you wouldn't eat it?"
"Several somethings, yes? There were eyes in the dark."
"They do tend to stick out in the moonlight."
"No, no- Arachne can see in the dark, yes? There was some sort of magical darkness around them."

Jin nods.
"Like the dungeon, yes?"
You incline your head, keeping pace. It takes a bit of concentration, but the ground wants to help, so the only real limit here is your stamina. Magical stamina. Mental stamina? You just know you get tired eventually.

"The same, yes. But no convenient runes."
"Eyes, instead."
"Hah. Yes."

Jin spreads her wings behind you, flapping a few times to take measure.
"I will hunt yes? Just fish. But I will be helping."
You throw a smile over your shoulder, and she takes to the sky, shooting forwards overhead.
>>
>>36786448

Lann moves up to take her place, though the half-elf refrains from sitting on the bow.
"She seems eager."
"She likes to be useful, yes? She gets frustrated when she can't help."
"You seem to have that in common."
"Maybe."

Step, step, step.
It's certainly faster that rowing, in any case.
"Will you make a report for the guild, when this is all done?"
"Huh?"
"You said they might pay you, yes."
"Ah. Yeah- I wrangled a commission from the officer in town. I bring back details on what's around in the woods, I get paid."
"Well, I hope."

She laughs.
"He tried to make it out that I wouldn't be in any danger with an arachne escort, and I had to spell out the hydra fight for him."
She shakes her head.
"He agreed eventually. Haggled like a godsdamn old woman, though."
"Papers and notes and reports, yes. He seems the type."
"Sometimes I wonder if he's even an adventurer."
"Sometimes?"

"Well, sometimes he comes down to the training room to remind us he's and adventurer."
It's your turn to laugh, this time.

The sun is casting a red glow that dances over the water, and you are starting to lag. You managed to stave off a headache with rests for snacks and lunch, but you're still getting tired. Magical stuff just takes it out of you.

Jin has piled the boat high with fish- Sara made a few bags, filled them with water and dropped the things in it to keep them fresh in the sunlight.

You drag the boat to shore, and set about using the last rays of daylight to have a meal with your friends.

Well, I guess as with most things, we appeal to the power of magic and suspension of disbelief. You are correct though, most trees, even were she to fan our her weight between 8 limbs, would not be able to hold that much spider.

>>36786423
>>36786413

Keep in mind for this the somewhat marginal height I gave her. My imagination put her at four feet tall, and a human child of comparable height would have a smaller weight than a fully grown adult, something like 30 kg taken whole, or 15 assuming a 50/50 split.

Sara is about 5'6" when she's not trying to appear taller.
Nin can almost reach 5' on her tip-toes. She's about 4'9"ish.

Wow, Nin is a lot taller than I imagined. I had her pegged for halfling sized. And Sara is tiny tiny spider sister~

Since we're on the subject, Jin and Shez? And are elves short or tall in this setting?
>>
>>36786655

Nin's wingspan is glorious. Because of their flight, most types of moths have about 3 or 4 to 1 ratio on body length to their wingspans. I'll keep that in mind and science more accurately next time.

Thanks for running. Also, maybe next time I'll be able to sell folks on the usefulness of paddle wheel technology and/or stilts.

The amount of scaring was overboard normal scaring levels.
>>

Nah. If you get threatened ina dark forest, you can't scare too hard unless they actually die from it.
It just means we won't have to kill them, which I consider a win for everyone except our stomach.

Nah, it was just us asserting dominance. It's all fine. And us laying seeds for our Queendom.
>>
>>36786712
Sara's tiny for an arachne, yes. And Nin's actually grown recently- both from her evolution and just regular aging.

She was 4'9" before- or rather, she claimed to be 4'9" before. But 6 inches of that was her antennae.

Jin is pretty big for a harpy, almost 5'2".
Sheszka is 5'7" when she's standing straight, though you'd be hard pressd to get her to do that.

Elves are all over the map height-wise. Your father is almost freakishly tall. He's 6'4".
Lann is average, coming in at 5'8".

>>36786755
Lyra stands nearly 6'9" when she isn't trying to be taller. She's probably about 8-9 feet long? It's really hard to estimate that stuff, sorry.
Mom is 6'10", but she counts her horns and rounds up to 7'.

>The sun is casting a red glow that dances over the water, and you are starting to lag. You managed to stave off a headache with rests for snacks and lunch, but you're still getting tired. Magical stuff just takes it out of you.
It occurs to me that fully exhausting ourself every day to gain speed is a risk, as we get deeper there are more and more dangerous monsters. Exhausted people can't fight.
We need to pace ourselves

Think about it this way: there was every indication that they were hostile to us. Not only did we resolve it without bloodshed, but they are now in a position where they are more than willing to approach, if they do approach, peacefully.
>>
>>36787347
Normal animals do that to larger predators, actually. It doesn't mean sapience at all.
>>
>>36787468
>there was every indication that they were hostile to us.

they could have been curious nocturnal people who were looking at this odd thing they haven't see before.

>>36787560

>>
>>36787347
Its a instinct thing, many animals leave prey behind when larger predators are around to keep them from eating them.
Not saying that weren't intelligent things, but we have no reason to assume so. Its a common thing for predatory animals that are also being preyed on.
>>
>>36787583
Feel free, you'd be wrong though.
You drastically understimate the range of self-preservation tactics that exist in the animal realm.
>>
>>36787591
>Its a instinct thing
no it isn't, its a "does not exist thing".

>many animals leave prey behind when larger predators are around to keep them from eating them.
"dropping your shit and running away" is completely different than piling up multiple untouched dead animals as tribute
>>
>>36787631
>is completely different than piling up multiple untouched dead animals as tribute
We don't know they did that. They might have left stuff they already had.
In fact, most likely they did.
>>
>>36787708
highly implausible for non sapient wild animals to have dragged a whole bunch of untouched carcasses (Wolves, a pair of deer, rabbits and more) with them on a hunt.
They either eat prey as they catch it. or they stow it away and then go out for more. You can't really effectively hunt while carrying a bunch of carcasses
>>
>>36787708
Nah, they were deliberately piled against the trunk of the tree. It's tribute.

I'm not involved in this conversation until now, but HOLD IT.
The goods were piled against the tree. This implies either they were purposely brought there, or the creatures not only all had large amounts of caught food, they were also several layers high so as to drop their catches in a "pile" if they fled.

The evidence just doesn't match up unless they were doing it on purpose.
>>
>>36787708
If they just dropped it where they stood, then it would be all over the floor instead of
>>36784562
>The bottom of the tree is surrounded by food. Wolves, a pair of deer, rabbits and more are piled against the trunk.
>piled against the trunk.
>>
>>36787779
one addendum to my argument here:

This MAY ALSO mean we saw a several-creature-deep killswarm.
>>
>>36787779
Or they dropped the hunt they had with them just at the tree trunk and fled, so we would be busy eating that stuff instead.
It says the trunk is "sorrounded" the piled can very well refer to it being disorderly some above the others, not in literal neat piles.
If they were sapient, they would have realised we were sitting in a boat. And either have attempted communication, or not just stared at us from down there.
Unless it was something feralized like the lizards, in which case there wasn't really anything to be gained beyond what we did.
>>
>>36787763
>or they stow it away and then go out for more
Very possibly they crossed our tree on the way to their nest. Yes. Which would very much explain why they had so much food, and depending on how many they were, that it was "piled" around, could just come from there being so much of it.
>>
>>36787855
The forensics just don't match up.

It requires too odd a disposition of creatures and too coincidental a food supply.

the REAL question is whether they can read.
Because if they can't, then we just left scary fire runes burnt into the tree.
>>
>>36787933
I don' see how. A larger group of animals, possibly part of a large pack with many young, drags a appropriate amount of food to their lair. On the way, they smell something odd in a nearby tree and go there, something huge and obviously dangerous comes out, they drop their prey and flee. Since they had sorrounded the tree, as is usual, the dropped prey would lie all around the tree, and since they didn't drop it all at the same time, some might have at first tried to keep it but dropped it when they found it slowed them down.
It adds up perfectly.
The question would be to REQM. HOW orderly were those "piles".
>>
>>36787996
You're trying way to hard to justify your position. Besides, if that were the case then they wouldn't be piled against the tree trunk, they would be strewn out around the tree.
>>
>>36788026
Not really, I think you are trying to see more design were simple coincidence suffices.
Nothing about their behavior otherwise suggests intelligence.
>>
>>36788059
It suggests either intelligence or an extreme string of coincidence.

And on a planet populated by intelligent beings, I am more likely to err on the side of intelligence rather than a string of 3+ coincidence.

Just like if you meet a talking dog wearing a hat telling you to go on a quest, you don't ignore it. You go save the world.
>>
>>36788110
What kind of hat is the dog wearing? That affects my world saving mood.
>>
>>36788137
I imagined a baseball cap.
>>
>>36788110
>or an extreme string of coincidence
Not really, as I explained before.
It would only be extreme coincidence if it were really orderly piles. As far as we know, it were just some animals lying over eachother.
And since there are only 12 intelligent races in the forest, non-intelligent, seems more likely.

I mean, the possibility of them not wanting to kill us is why we voted for yelling instead of killing them outright, but since 2/3 options were that, I heavily assume REQM would not go "you killed find crying and grieving monster mothers under your tree next morning".
So yeah, all evidence suggests animals. Maybe unsual animals, possibly something like the gnomes.
>>
>>36788178
You do realize that we started calling it tribute because Lyra called it that, right? If they were randomly dropped then she would have said that, and not call it tribute and carve an apology on the tree.
>>
>>36788234
She called it tribute because animals left behind to keep something from eating you, can very much be called that. Lyra didn't give it much thought, it was just funny.
>>
>>36787905
>>or they stow it away and then go out for more
>Very possibly they crossed our tree on the way to their nest. Yes.
No, because
1. piling it up against the tree is not stowing it away
2. The quantity and diversity of animals carried is far too large to have come from a single hunt.

Had they dropped a pair of deer, that would be somewhat plausible, they were carrying them to a safe spot to eat.
>>
>>36788301
She apparently gave it enough thought to carve an apology on the tree. Also

> "Did... did you scare something so bad that it brought you food just so you wouldn't eat it?"
Brought, mate. And this is the last time I'm responding, because you're just being purposefully obtuse at this point.
>>
>>36788366
>The quantity and diversity of animals carried is far too large to have come from a single hunt
Entirely dependend if the entire group had hunted ina s ingle spot. Since it was obviously a very large group, that is highly implausible.
They wanted to stow it away, they were on the way to the place where they do so, and came across our tree.

>>36788386
A comment made by a character that had absolutely no idea about the situation in question. Very valid.

And again, I have to ask. 2 out of three options were "kill it", do you honestly think REQM would have done it like that if they were intelligent?
>>
>>36788438
they probably retroactively became intelligent because it is interesting.
>>
>>36788453
Very possible, which is why I'm glad to have voted for not killing them.
Its just silly to go "I feel so bad about scaring that predatory animal away from the tree I was sleeping in".
>>
>>36788470
Yeah, that was pretty silly. I think some people here just go to moralfaggotry in overreaction to that shitposting last time.
>>
>>36788470
Scaring them is fine, I just think we overshot our predicted scare margins.
>>
>>36788541
I think its more they overreacted.
Its not like we had any reason to hold back on the scares towards these creatures that were stalking beneath our sleeping tree.
>>
>>36788470
>I am losing an argument so I will redefine anyone who disagreed with me to have a completely unrelated position
mate, those are two completely different arguments and one can be for one and not the other.
>>
>>36788567
>those are two completely different arguments
No, the question was. Are they intelligent. So the question of if they were intelligent, or if REQm retroactively made them so because its more fun, is very relevant.
>>
>>36788567
Do you really think REQM gave it that much thought when he had them pile down food?
It was a funny and cool thing for our crit, not indication of higher intelligence on what was otherwise a night time fight.
>>
>>36788601
>No, the question was. Are they intelligent
which is a completely different argument from
>Its just silly to go "I feel so bad about scaring that predatory animal away from the tree I was sleeping in".
aka
>intimidating them was wrong
Just because something is sapient, doesn't mean intimidation is wrong.
>>
>>36788688
I never implied it wasn't?
I was agreeing with that anon who said REQM might make them intelligent in hindsight. That other thing was a unrelated point and I never implied it was related. I just also found that nonsensical.
>>
>>36788688
I'm starting to think you are trying to have a argument where none exists anymore.
