"Masami, don't you think that's enough?" Kaori says, with a lazy yawn.
"No, no I do not."

That's about three cards so far.
I'm really not sure if that's enough, but it's at least a good start.

I am Itsukuma Masami, and I've had a very long day. Fortunately, things seem to be looking up for me! My sister found a way to make blank cards, which I can shape into superpowers! I can't think of a better gift for Christmas!

Well, except the three bracelets she stole that can give other people superpowers. If she didn't steal them, I would think those things would be the greatest Christmas gift.

"Masamiii, how much longer?" Aiko is also yawning, staring at the clock on her phone.
To be fair, we've been making new cards for hours. It's almost 10 PM, and I'm not even sure that I WANT to fight the super-powered grunts who claim they are coming to take the bracelets tomorrow.
But... it's better to be prepared. So even if nobody fights, then I can always use the cards for something.

"Not much longer." I say, stifling a yawn. I don't want to admit it, but making so many cards in such a short amount of time is really wearing on me. I've never made more than one at a time before, now I've made three and it feels like I'm going to collapse.

>Pick what the three cards do, their powers, their utility, maybe someone who would be good with them.
>And
>Decide a plan of action for confronting the monsters tomorrow. Going to ambush them? Talk them down? Ask for a duel? Maybe just give them a bracelet or three?
>>
>>36760841
One bracelet. They only said they were after one thing, so that is all they get. Have Kaori and Aiko with bracelets hidden if things go south. 3 new cards is a lot to come up with.
>>
>>36760841
maybe some kind of speed boost + heavy gauntlets for Ryouta should be a good idea
not sure about the rest
hmm
whatever we pick, we must train first
>>
>>36760841
We should talk to them and give them a bracelet or two, they'll probably leave us alone then.
I'm having some trouble coming up with card ideas.
>>
Maybe a proper flight card?
Or something we can use from range?
>>
>>36760841
I am terrible at planning and at power ideas, so I have nothing to offer here. I don't think they are going to leave it without all three bracelets though.
>>
>>36761316
They never said they were looking for three, so they might. It should be better for them than not having any, at least.

Okay, so

>General purpose speed card
>Gauntlets for Ryouta
>Proper flight card

That sounds like a good compromise for three.

Also
>Give only one Bracelet, that's all he asked for anyway.
But first
>Train the night away

Sounds good!
Want to give anyone a card before we move onto next day?

Okay, I think I had enough of making cards for the night. That’s enough for three people to use, anyway.

Ryouta is clearly the heavy hitter among us. He gets a pair of gloves that can break straight through a brick wall. With any luck, they will feel a punch if he delivers one with this card.
I need to think of a name for this card.

Next, I made a card that makes everything super-fast. Kaori already has a speed card of her own, but that card is hers and I wanted to make something that’s unique from hers. This one isn’t as fast as hers, but hers can seemingly only run in a straight line. This one can speed back and forth and turn on a dime. Which I felt was way more useful if I’m going to be fighting anything.

Finally, I got around to making a proper flight card. The jump card is fun and all, but it doesn’t really compare to having real powers of flight!
Though, the card I made has a few downsides to it. Much like Kaori’s speed card; this can only fly in a straight line and I have problems with turning. Real-life tests of this card will have to wait.

"Masami" Maeda walks through the door, holding a tray of teacups. "You have a visitor."
A visitor?

"Mom!?"
"Izumi!?" Kaori bolts from her chair. "W-what are you doing here?"

Mom walks in the door, that sly smile she occasionally has proudly shining.
"I just wanted to see how my sweeties were doing, and Kaori."

Mom walks over and grabs her into a hug. "I expect you to call me ‘Mom’ from here on, too."
"B-b-b-" Kaori stutters over her words.
"Mom, Why are you here, and how did you know to find us here?"

"You’ve spent so much time away from home lately that I thought I would spend some of it with you. And Maeda here helped me find you." She smiles, warmly.

She walks around, admiring our handiwork.
"So, what are you girls doing so late at night?"

Writing!

Also, a little later, I will have to go somewhere with family who is in town. Depending on if I'm at the stopping point I want to be or not, I will either have a short thread today and a hopefully extended one tomorrow or Wednesday (Hooray for vacation!) or I will go in intermission and resume when I'm back/done.

"Um! Um. Um! UM!"
Kaori.. Mom isn't THAT scary.

"W-what Kaori is trying to say is that we've been busy! Look at all these new cards!"

I hold up the three cards to Mom so she can see them. Kaori looks shocked and horrified that I would outright tell her that I was making cards.
She still must not know me very well if she thinks I'm going to lie to Mom.

"Oh~! These are good quality cards, Masami. Where did you get the templates for them?"
"The.. templates?"
"The, um.. blank cards."

"Ah! Well.."
Kaori interrupts me, "I found out how to make them!"

Mom claps her hands together, "That's great! Two sisters working together! But why do you need so many cards?"
"Oh.. Um. Well.."
Great, now I'm stuttering, too.

That's when Kaori reaches on top of the desk and grabs the bracelet. She holds it up for Mom to see.
Mom stops in her tracks when she sees it, and she gently slides the door behind her shut.

"Kaori, sweetie, what have you done?"
That's a question I've been asking myself, but I really don't have an answer for it.

After much explaining and apologizing from Kaori, Mom is made fully aware of the situation.
"I see, and they'll be back tomorrow?" Mom sits at the table across from us, her face displaying a calming aura about her.

"Yeah.." Kaori sounds more depressed now than ever.

"And!" I interrupt, "And.. I was going to give them a single bracelet tomorrow. They only asked for one, so maybe we won't have to fight at all!"

Mom shrugs her shoulders and sighs.
"You two already sound like you have a plan."

She stands up, walks to our side of the table, and grips Kaori and I into a hug.
"I'm so proud of you two, it's like you didn't need my help at all."
"Um.. Hey.. Um.. Mom?"

She's not listening to me, but I'll ask anyway.
"What do you mean by that, needing your help?"

"Oh, because I already knew."
Wait, wait.
"You.. knew!?"

She pulls away from us, "I knew the bracelets were taken, I guessed who had them. And I knew the chairman had the Royal Guard searching for them."
The.. Royal guard?

"So.. I guessed that you had them and came to make sure you at least had a plan." She smiles at me.
"But.. Mom! What would you do about it?"

She thinks for a minute, before looking back up at me.
"I would tell an adult."

The room feels just a bit quieter by her response.
"But... that never works! I mean.. you're an adult!"
She twiddles her thumbs a bit, "I guess you would have to find the right adult!"

That's not very helpful.
"So.. what were you going to do tomorrow?"

>Give a bracelet and ambush the monster if he tries anything funny

>>36764217
She still is, we players just aren't privileged enough to bear witness to it.

She seems inconsistent. First few threads she's a high power business exec making demands. Next few she's Momish but horribly meek when fortune is around.
>>
>>36764946
I don't really think so, I do think her attitude in the first thread or two was a bit happy-go-lucky WRT us (i.e. she really took our seemingly large distrust of/distaste for her a bit lightly) but her general confidence is probably how she acts most of the time during work. She only really seems meek around scumbag dad himself, not the rest of Fortune. And obviously she dotes on us a ton since she can be herself.

Ya'll would know. Did we ever get anything definitive that said we weren't just snagged off the street and turned into whatever we are now? That still bugs me.

As of now , how exactly we were made is still a unresolved plot point, although we have strong reason to assume we used to be a card.

"I.. I guess I'm going to give them a bracelet tomorrow."

"Mm, then what?"
"I'm- I'm going to give them a bracelet and pretend that I don't know where the others are. He only asked for one. I'm making all these cards so if he tries anything strange we can ambush him!"

Mom reaches over and scratches my head.
"So you have both a plan, and a backup plan. You're both so resourceful and intelligent. I wish someday you can use all of that for something besides fighting."

I can feel myself blushing, but I try to hide it as best as I can.
"What should we do now, Mom?"
"Isn't it obvious, silly? You should train!"

"Huh, train? Do you think we'll need it?"
"Well, you have two cards and three bracelets now. You should get everyone used to them in case you have to use them, right?"

She makes a very good point.

--

We spend several hours training out in the courtyard, it's not like anyone is going to notice us out here in the middle of the night anyway.

"So" Ryouta says, holding bracelet on one arm and card in the other, "Just.. slide the card, and it doesn't hurt, right?"
Maeda is none too pleased, "Stop being a baby and just do it! I've been standing here five minutes waiting for you to do something!"
"Ohhh, but there's just so many unknowns here!"

Maeda, still none too pleased, pierces him with a glare that could kill a cobra.
"Bro. Card. Wrist. Do it."
With a little more than a girly yelp, he swipes the card across his wrist. Slowly, his hands become enveloped in gloves that shine brilliantly in the night.

"Oh. OH! Not bad!"
"You should have done that ten minutes ago when we asked you to!"

The two siblings continue to bicker. So I walk over to my sibling to make sure we're ready for the morning.

"So, think we're ready?" I ask Kaori, she sits down after testing out the speed card.
"I.. can't think of anything else." She looks around the courtyard, "Hey, where did Mom go?"

We spend another hour or so training. With some concentration and luck, I'm almost able to combine the powers of two cards at will!
Almost, it doesn't seem to work reliably. The shadowy card I have seems to be most suited for it, but some of the other cards seem to work together under some kind of strange logic.
Like the jump card and the fly card, they seem to work together. So does Julie and Belle, I can get Belle's armor with Julie's sword.
I wonder why it works that way?

For some reason, Mom only comes back just as we're finishing up our training. I wonder what she spent so much time doing?

All of us decide to sleep at the school so we're ready for the morning. We don't get much rest, but it's more than enough to face the looming threat before us.
But before I fall asleep, there's something I feel I need to do.

"Kaori? Are you awake?"
"mm, Masami, I'm having problems sleeping."

She's not the only one, I can practically feel the butterflies trying to escape from my stomach.

I scoot a little closer to her and grab a hold of her hand. Gently, I pull her into a hug.
"Thanks for being such a good big sis."
"I'm not that good. I'm the reason you're tangled in this mess."

That's true, but- um.
"But no matter what happens Kaori, you're still my big sister. I love you."
"..That sounds so weird." She whispers while scooting a bit further away from me.
"What does?"

"It's just.. I couldn't ever picture you saying that to me a week ago. How did you get so comfortable with it so quickly?"
That's a good question, BUT!
"I guess it's just something I've always wanted." I grab her into another hug again while she's not expecting it.
"..Thanks.. I love you too, Sister."

With that, we both drift off to sleep together.

Morning.
The sky is almost completely vacant of any clouds. From the north blows a cool wind that faintly hints at the harsher winter to come; a refreshing breeze that chills the skin but invigorates the soul.
In the distance, children file into the building. Their ecstatic sounds completely drowning the front yard of the school in the joyful praise of the last few days before vacation.

Nearby, other students direct them from the direction of the courtyard. Friends of the student council called in specifically to keep as few people away from there as possible.

The school courtyard is dead silent. Clubs who meet in and around the courtyard were called off for the morning, all the loose objects and movable furniture has been stowed away. Leaving a plain and pristine field of grass with an empty pavilion in the center.

I can practically feel the time tick away. Tick by tick, it feels like time is slowing down as the moment of confrontation approaches.

I'm feeling nauseous, maybe I should just...
No, no I need to be here. I can't throw it all away just because of cold feet.
My friends are here, with me. That's all I can ask for. I can't see them right now because they have really good hiding spots, but as long as they are nearby, then I will be fine.

WHAM
"EEEK!"
I stumble backwards and land on my butt. Above me towers the looming form of the mighty monster I confronted yesterday.
Quickly scrambling to my feet; I try to compose myself in the most mature way possible.
"Don't do that, you scared me!" I yell at him in a very not-intimidating girl voice.

The monstrosity lets out a very low sigh. "My apologies, truth be told I didn't expect to see you here at all. I'm sure you have something for me, now that you are here."

Meekly, I hand over the single bracelet as calmly as I can. Which isn't very easy, considering how large this monster is.
"T-that's all I found in her stuff, I haven't seen her since yesterday."

He eyes me suspiciously.
"Mm. And you're sure you haven't seen her? That's awfully long for a little girl to be missing."
"Yes! Yes I'm sure!" My voice raises a bit too much there, whoops!

He lets out another sigh, stroking his almost entirely metallic chin.
"You're a very smart girl for meeting me today, so I'll believe you this time."
And again, he PATS ME ON THE HEAD, EWW GET IT OFF.

He takes the bracelet from my hand and examines it closely.
"I'm glad you decided to see things my way. I suppose we both got exactly what we wanted, then."

He then turns the bracelet upside-down.
His fingers outstretch, letting it fall into the grassy field.
Then, with his foot, his boot stomps directly on top of it.

There's a snapping sound, then silence.

"B-b-b-"
But! But! But!
"WHY!?"
"Hmm? Is there a problem little girl? I didn't exactly mention that I wanted to keep it yesterday, did I?"

That!

"But now that I got what I wanted, I suppose I should focus on the task that my master wanted. Mind if I have a look around?"

No, I am having none of this anymore.
"Wait! I gave you what you asked for, and you broke it! Now you want to look around while classes are in session!? No! You don't get to!"
"Calm down, sweetheart. I just wanted to have a looksie. It'll be over in a second."

I jump in front of him, arms outstretched.
"You saw what you said you wanted to see! And I gave you what you wanted! Why don't you just go away!? This isn't a place for you!"

"I saw the things that I wanted to see, but I'm not quite finished yet. There's still one more thing I was hoping to see around here."

"It doesn't matter what you wanted to see! We had an agreement, and you ended up smashing your little toy anyway! Why did your master even want it if you were going to do that?"

"Hee, Master never asked me to get it back, frankly I don't think he cares. I just didn't want it to exist anymore. I think he's trying to use those little things to replace us. No need for bodyguards when you can use the cards, yourself."

He stretches his arms, a metallic pop sounds out in his shoulder.
"You should know that better than anyone, Priestess."

Wait, how?
"You.. know who I am?"
"You thought I didn't know, Priestess? Master was really wanting Magician back, but frankly, I could care less about her. As long as she's not back at Master's home, she can roam free. Besides, there's something left here that I really want instead."

"A.. fight with me?"
"Yes, Priestess! A clash of wits and skill! A duel!"

Huh.
"But... why me? What makes me so special?"

He's.. laughing?
"Priestess, I've been waiting, listening, watching you ever since the day you were born. I saw you take Fortune head-on, and succeed! I saw you threaten Tower in his very office, and he surrendered! I've seen how everyone treats you with respect and care and can reach only one conclusion"

He whips out one of his rapiers, pointing them at me.
"You have proven yourself so capable, that the weak now fear you."

Huh.
"But.. no one's afraid of me."
I'm more afraid of you!

"That's where you're wrong. You are the unknown element that Fortune fears at this very moment."

He clenches his free hand, "Fortune and the people who run it, are weak. They hide like vermin from the world, praying that the world doesn't find them. When they ordered you to join them, you rejected their offers and lived by your own rules. Something which only the strong are entitled to."

I'm confused, "..Are you really doing all this because you wanted to fight me? That's really rude of you." Arms cross, pout.

"I want to know if those fears are justified, Priestess." He spins the rapier to point it at me once more. "Engarde."

We both ready ourselves. But I know that my stance and posture isn't very good. I really don't have much will to fight him. He's just a guy looking for a fight, why am I even fighting him?

"You know Priestess, that's why Magician lived a tough life. She had neither the power nor the will to live her own life."

Nope, never mind, I'm going to kill him.

Okay, whew, that may be the longest session I ever ran.

That said, I also had a three hour intermission between. So there's that.

Thanks everyone for the thread! Let me know what you thought. I'm not sure when next thread will be, probably Wednesday or Friday.

Thanks again!

Thanks for running. This was the first thread I was able to catch live.

Why's she mad at him for making a valid point? Kaori would agree with him in an instant.

Masami wouldn't, also that's not really the only reason Kaori lived a tough life.
>>
>>36772851
He basically said that it's correct for the strong to bully the weak and our big sister was responsible for her own abuse/ neglect. The former is just a wrong opinion, the latter is shit-talking our family.

Pretty sure Masami would give Kaori the full pout if she suggested that herself.

>and our big sister was responsible for her own abuse/ neglect
She totally was though. If she had the will to live her own life, she wouldn't have run crying to Father and Masami wouldn't have had to drag her back. And she didn't have the power necessary either, thus the whole card stealing thing.

>Pretty sure Masami would give Kaori the full pout if she suggested that herself.
Agreed there.

She has probably been forcefully kept inside the house since she was born, what do you expect.
>>
>>36773112
Yeah, generally, implying that the victim of abuse is responsible for that abuse due to their inability to beat their abuser in a fight is not something that people greet as insightful, accurate or frankly something that anyone other than a complete cunt would say.
>>
>>36773294
So? It's true. There is no magic child services we can call on them.
>>
>>36773354
So, the victim is responsible, because nobody stops the abuser?
>>
>>36773354
No it isn't.
The victim is unable to stop the abuse - true.
The victim is responsible for the abuse - false.
