With a groan you take out your phone and flip over to that one girl’s shared image on your Lurk application. Your network access in the store seems blocked so it takes a few minutes to load, but before long the two of you look at the shared images of your midnight melee and comfortable dining opposite one another. He wonders aloud which of the girls that night took the picture, you figure by the screen name it was the sporty runner, Nijiko.

There are a few recent postings from her as well...apparently lauding your rescue of her and the other girl while saving their friend from a monstrous fate. She recounts in detail your subterranean brawl and consumption, then shares secondhand your earlier bought that same night.

...the street fighting enthusiast who follows you and the urban occult people have both reblogged those posts. Others have reblogged their reblog. Its momentarily dizzying.

The two of you stand in awkward silence a moment. Your accusation of your fight and meal being a date burns your cheeks into an exceptionally visible crimson against your pale skin.

“So…” he coughs and crosses his arms while looking away in feigned disinterest and a tonal shift in his voice, “That stuff really happen?” he offers nonchalantly before adding “And, was that a date?”

From the other side of the book stacks, four figures stand silent and crouched, carefully listening. Kairi Osaka, Momoko Nakajima, Moe Ueda, and Midori Mori.

“Jade, doesn’t the wallflower remind you of-” Moe whispers before the girl with the long pink ponytail on her far side silently shushes her.

“...sorry Momoko-cha-”

Two fingers shoot forward and press against Moe Ueda’s lips, cutting off her words and silencing her. Momoko Nakajima looks at her in a calm and scolding manner as she turns back to the shelf, sliding a book over strategically to gain a better secured and camouflaged vantage point.

You reach down sharply and grab Sasha’s hand. The extremely forward connotations lost on you as you turn and march out of the bookstore, practically dragging him.

“Wait, you don’t even know where we’re going!” he pulls against you past the door before you pass the awning, his shock at your actions passed.

~Then you better tell me,~ you say impatiently, still holding onto his hand.

He looks down at your grip with what you impassively recognize as embarrassment. Really?

“I’m kenneling him at Blue Kitsune Animal Hospital,” he huffs and tugs against your grip lightly.

~Then lets go!~ you point with your free hand while raising your other hand in resolution and victory, dragging Sasha to his toes in the process, ~I know where that is,~

“Wait for us!” Kairi says in exasperation as the shop’s door bell chimes behind you.

“What’s this about a bear fight?” Momoko asks in concern while Moe stands beside her with stars in her eyes.

~Sasha has a trained bear as a sparring partner,~ you explain passionately, ~And I’m going to fight it,~

You understand she means you as Mikage Chiba, and not one of your assorted more believably bear fighting alter egos. While you would concede she has a point...you want to fight that bear.

“Its a trained Bear, and its just a little spar. I’m sure everything will be FINE,” Kairi tries to calm Midori’s faux outrage down for the sake of the other girls’ presence.

“I still don’t like it,” Midori huffs and crosses her arms, “but its not like I could stop you now,”

~No,~ you intone in sudden deadpan.

“Ah, so this is the power of the legendary Princess No,” Momoko nods and then smiles her sunny smile, “This should be fun!”

A short while later, you are seated on a bench in a local veterinary clinic generously called an Animal Hospital. They have enough space on the grounds for safety enclosures for a few large animals, usually horses. You’re strapped down with a padded chest piece, armguards, a visored helmet, and leg guards on your upper legs and shins.

Sasha secures the last padded fixture to your leg and inspects the setup. Earlier you said you’d look good doing this…now you aren’t so sure.

“Okay, now we’re going to socialize you with Boris. It lets him know you’re here for the sparring game and will help keep him from actually trying to maul you,” Sasha explains evenly.

He leads you out of the clinic and toward an enclosure where the Veterinarian is leading the bear through the fenced pathways into the larger enclosure. The older man in the long coat pats the large brown furred bear on the side, eliciting a dull bear moan. The other girls are there, lined up together and watching with varying degrees of excitement, worry, and interest.

Damn...he’s huge. He’s a bit bigger than his own shadow...or he looks bigger because his head is smaller?

Sasha, who is without the safety precautions currently swaddling you, leads you into the enclosure and closes the door behind the two of you.

“Boris, come,” Sasha says as the Vet leaves back into the enclosed pathway.

Boris seems to ignore the small youth, instead laying down and curling up.

~Okay, that’s cute,~ you snicker.

“BORIS!” he bellows again in annoyance and prompts the bear to rise up on its hind legs and roar, clawed paws up and forward.

Sasha strides up to him and slides oversized punching pad mits over his claws and strapping them in tightly. With an open hand he pats the bear in the center of his chest and bids it to follow him over to you. It does so, on two legs.

“Raise your firsts forward,” he explains to you and you do so.

Patting the backs of your gloved fists, Sasha motions to the bear who leans forward and starts sniffing the glove pads and your arm guards. When satisfied, Boris leans back and roars in a half hearted and slovenly fashion...you think.

“Pet him a bit,” your pint sized referee explains, “and then we can get started,”

This was a good idea. This was a really good idea.

By her standards she probably went pretty easy on Mikage, but I'm prepared to bet that it's still enough to make sparring with a bear seem practical.

I wouldn't imagine we'd be able to do any serious harm to Boris without magic. He is, after all, a goddamn bear.

We're also pretty damn fast and evasive even without the +4 from controlled rage enhancement.

I am mildly pleased no one figured out what I'm up to.

It's the club president of Keiko's creepy little fanclub. You can see it right in the OP, it refers to the secretary as their secretary and the other spider-themed interludes have all been centered around her too. The problem is that her monster stuff isn't obvious and her infection probably isn't going to be either, and considering Japan's culture and idol reverence, it might take a very long time before we ICly clue in on it.

Unless we meet the club president and sense her Shadow stuff or something, but considering their group avoids us like the plague, that could take a very long time.
