You hop out of the back of the wagon, reaching back to grab Mittens by the waist and help her down before offering your hand to Dani. While her smile is soft and kindly while taking your hand it turns mischievous and impish. You’ve seen that look before, and it usually precedes something-

Dani leaps off the edge of the wagon onto you, arms and legs wrapping about your torso in a classic “Spinarak Hold.” You both fall over into a laughing heap. Mittens jumps ontop of Dani, causing you to hack and wheeze a bit in between laughs.

Nick stands at the edge of the wagon, shaking his head and rolling his eyes. You ask him for a bit of help, to which he replies “Why should I help you when you didn’t help me get off the wagon?”

“Oh come on, man! I’m dying over here!”

“And I’m stuck on the wagon with no hero to help me down. Get over it.” He then proceeds to jump down from the wagon and walk towards the tower, leaving you to the mercies of a luchador and a cat.

Eventually, though, Math saunters over and kicks the heel of your shoe a few times, urging you to “get’up, yeah? Scythers aren’t going to catch themselves…”

True enough, so you push Mittens and Dani aside and help them off the ground. Then you set to work: you ensure that your whole team and everyone involved are covered in a relatively foul-smelling odor-suppressant. Then you set up the bait of the two fresh Deerling and the Ivysaur. Math recommends charring the meat and everything surrounding it a bit for good measure and to “make it seem more realistic.”

Scyther are relatively active predators but they wouldn’t pass up a free meal; they also tend to investigate fire-type activity in their range. The smell of charred meat should bring them around. At least a couple. You can handle a couple, right?

>Incoming tl;dr

You feel the tension in your shoulders. You roll them around a bit, forcing a grin onto your face and jumping in place a bit. Yeah, hell, you’re a little nervous or scared: but this is exciting. Math, Dani, and Nick are at the top of the maintenance building just waiting but you couldn’t resist waiting on the ground for a while longer.

It dawns on you that you should check on your team and maybe say something to them all; after all, even if everything went perfectly they would be the ones taking on the most danger. You have to respect them for that. You’ll never just treat them as slaves or something.

There are six flashes of light, and pretty soon your little band of little monster badasses is arrayed in a half-circle around you. They smell pretty ripe thanks to the scent cover but they’re all in good shape otherwise. Mittens managed to work on her personal strength and mental control of the environment considerably, learning Gravity as a result. You focused Nereid and Sheldon both on mastering their control of foam production and tail-fu, respectively. Now Nereid can summon up a deluge of caustic, foaming fury at will and Sheldon has gotten pretty good at parrying or grabbing projectiles and opponents. His ability to then snap said objects in half with his tail is great, too. As a sort of bonus, you learned almost on accident that Nereid can hit things from afar by producing a sort of hard-light projectile. You learned this is called “Swift,” and she’s very accurate with it.

Apollo has upped his ability to produce flames spontaneously and maintain them even under water fire. Nereid provided a good resistance tool for that, testing your Growlithe’s limits and overall increasing his stamina. Apollo has a solid Flame Charge now and you put it to a field test when catching the deerling.

>>36719824

Phoenicia helped in that endeavor; you had to get to know her better and address her anxiety, first of all, but after some communication you were able to connect with the calm, highly intelligent bird. Mittens clued you in that Phoenicia thoroughly enjoys hunting and has a very curious (if outwardly calm and quiet) nature. She enjoys a good scratching around her neck and riding around on your shoulder, too. You’ll have to buy a sort of falconer’s glove, though. The straps of your backpack are pretty ratty now.

You now know Bonnie better, perhaps the “oldest” of your team relatively and the most “mature” if you can put it that way. She’s clever and took to your partnership well; you’re not sure if Sandshrew are naturally slow and relaxed as a species or if it’s just Bonnie, but she’s pretty chill. This might have worried you if not for the ferocity with which she took to training. Like with all of your Pokemon, she has a drive to be strong, to grow. Once you and Mittens explained to her that you would help her become much stronger she was onboard with whatever you had in mind. What you had in mind was working on her ability to manipulate sand, an ability that ground-types use to fight against more aggressive, often deadlier foes.

Bonnie, as a sandshrew, has the ability to naturally manipulate minerals in rock and soil. You understand it to be magnetism, but freelance scientists have been looking into the exact mechanisms and don’t seem to completely understand it all. It frustrates you, sometimes, how much information was lost after the Warring Period, or the Dark Period. It’s nice that there’s so much to learn, but that vicious part of you that wants to learn and understand everything doesn’t like it very much.

Your training yesterday went very well and is part of the reason you were shoveling shit so late into the night; you went over personal abilities, teaching basic directions with your tin whistle, and even touched on working together.

>cont.
>>
>>36719855

You have a very solid team, you think, especially for this early in the game. You joined up with Dani and Nick for a bit yesterday and they both seem to be on similar levels but definitely below you overall. Mittens may be the determining factor there, but you’d like to think it’s just grit and hard work.

You look at each of them, all very different from the next, and are proud to see where they are after such a short time together. Pokemon growth and development is amazing, and so is the rate at which you can bond with them. You’re not sure if it’s that “trainer-partner” magic people like to talk about or some sort of design feature, but they all feel very close to you. It’s nice, but you have to do right by them. Today has to go well.

Back in the present, you have Mittens translate your words. You talk to them individually and as a group, pointing to their various strengths and abilities and alluding to how they each can help each other. You tell them that today is important because you are going to be facing some possibly very strong foes, and if things go wrong someone could die.

You even show them a picture of a Scyther via projection, and you watch their reactions. Apollo, Nereid, and Phoenicia all seem to sort of “puff up” at the sight, perhaps challenging this virtual foe. Mittens stares at it with a steely, intelligent gaze. Sheldon and Bonnie both have colder reactions: curiosity, steadfastness, and maybe a bit of fear mixed in.

They all react how you would expect them to, initially. Then you begin to walk towards the projection in order to reference something. Apollo and Nereid, to your surprise, both jump up and move between you and the “Scyther,” as if to defend you. Seems your demonstration was a little too realistic, so you shut if off. Both of them earn some scratches on their heads.

>cont (last one?)
>>
>>36719871

Everything in order and as prepared as you expect to be for now, you retract everyone except Phoenicia and Mittens. Then you take the ladder around the back to the top of the shorter one-story side of the building and join Math and Dani. You know that, a few meters away, the bait lay in place. You can certainly smell it, and you hope the Scyther do too.

“You kids ready?” Math asks, lighting up another cigarette. “We’ll be waiting until we don’t wait anymore and, shit, then it’ll be show time.” He blows a billowing cloud of smoke which you wave away, not amused. “You need to go over the plan again?”

Though actually if you mean what are 'mons are doing once contact is made I think the plan was to have Apollo as our roaming slaughterhouse, Sheldon was mid-field interceptor between Apollo and us, Nereid and Bonnie were next to or close to us, Phoenicia dive bombing (because they picked Wing-Attack), and Mittens communications and support...if it became something else without me noticing, then yes please remind us...
>>
Since there's no one here yet, I'm just gonna go over some things...

Firstly, here's the pastebin link to the google doc (4chan won't let me post it directly)
>Document Link: http://pastebin.com/wPmrDbds

Secondly, there has been a slight mechanical shift in terms to moves: each member of your team now has a defined role. This doesn't do much in itself except affect the rate at which they learn types of moves. After considering movepools and discussing different options a lot, I decided that I didn't want to limit how many moves any Pokemon can learn. Instead, they learn some moves in their movepool faster than others.

For example, Mittens can learn utility/"mental" moves faster because she is a technician. It takes 1 "training session" to learn a utility move for her. Then, 2 for defensive moves and 3 for physical/offensive moves.

Apollo learns physical moves at 1 session per physical move, 2 per utility, and 3 per defensive.

As Pokemon evolve they will unlock roles which allow for 2 types of moves to be learned equally fast.

>>>>

Also, I added in "desperation" moves, which are pretty much FF-style limit breaks. If, during a battle, you roll a crit fail or a crit success you reach the "point of desperation" and can use the move.

>>>>

When we enter a battle-royale proper I'm going to have you guys choose one pokemon in particular to direct initially. This means choosing specific moves and strategies for them / shouting at them, etc. For the others I just want you guys to say one of "Offensive" "Defensive" or "Assist!"

Offensive-directed mons will get in there and fight. Defensive will cover and defend, obviously. Assisting mons will use utility attacks to manage the battle.

If you have any questions or concerns about these changes please keep in mind that I want to keep the quest fun and interesting but also manageable for myself.

I'll do my best, though, and I know the system is imperfect or maybe weird. I'm open to criticism or suggestions as always.
>>
>>36720175
This is a very good summary of what I expected and people seemed to suggest. You've got it right on the money:

Scythers come in, the attacks begins with Fire-types attacking, supporters throwing in whatever they can, and defenders keeping the humans safe or otherwise keeping the Scythers back.
>>
Rolled 31 (1d100)

>>36720175
We wanna get Bonnie going with her rollout since it's x4 effective vrs the bug/flying scythers.

Apollo should stick to fire fang and flame charge to keep on the move and inflict x2 fire damage without setting the forest on fire

Mittens was gonna set up a gravity to keep the scythers grounded and susceptible to our physical attackers. Depending on whether gravity doesn't require sustained use she could then set up reflects to control the flow of battle or defend us from harm.

Since the scythers would be grounded Bonnies sandspikes can hurt them though it may also cause complications for the rest of the team. Thoughts on that Herald?

Sheldon was to act as the tank and try to monkey wrench the scythers to a halt or crush their arm joints to put them out of action.

Nereid... maybe swift to guarantee hits on the scythers, or silver mist to keep things foggy. Not sure how far that would disadvantage us more than the scythers though.

Phoenicia can use sand attack or soot spray to mess with their accuracy. Sand attack my have good synergy with sandshrew.
>>
>>36720204
>>36720214
I like your style Herald...
though if there is some way to make the Items page a little less of a mess then I suggest that, but if that means taking up too much space or whatever it's fine...
>>
>>36720244
I just wanted to point out positions and leave us to choosing the moves when the time came...though I personally disagree with having Sheldon as a main close combat fighter against a Sycther do to his speed...
but I did forget about Bonnie's Rollout and Sand Spikes so maybe more offensive role for her...
>>
Rolled 93 (1d100)

>>36720244
In light of >>36720204

Bonnie: Physical [only one move in that category so it's perfect]
Apollo: Physical [shame about the two non-fire type moves in the category but quick attack should be good for keeping him moving about]
Mittens: Direct control. Gives us the potential to use both gravity and reflect and also keeps us in contact with our most capable of understanding pokemon. She can keep us keep the whole situation under order
Sheldon: Defensive
Nereid: Defensive or Utility depending on what we want her to do
Phoenicia: Utility
>>
>>36720268
I figure that rather than just have Sheldon try to blast waterguns around the place (potentially interfering with Bonnie and Apollo) it'd be much better to have him stand in the middle and work on a counter basis. He's not fast enough to chase scythers so why bother? Let them come to him and then lash out with that tail when they do.

The main problem would be convincing the scythers he's a priority target. Perhaps Mittens can do some wafflefu on them to make them go for him.
>>
By the way Herald, does using defense curl buff rollout? Is defense curl less of a 'pokemon just curls up' and more or a 'pokemon curls up and tenses or hardens their hide in that position, thus increasing defense and making them more solid for rollouting'?
>>
>>36720244
>>36720272
Huh I thought everyone wanted to put Phoenicia in the middle of the fray...don't get me wrong I like it more with her in a support role and fully support it...

>>36720297
Makes sense, is why I had him as the interceptor, but people made it seem like they wanted him to initiate the combat and take a more aggressive role...
>>
>>36720311

Well, anon, this is the point in the thread where we talk about "Pokemon game mechanics are retarded and make Herald's job harder." Because how does it make sense for a Pokemon to just... harden...? Unless they produce some sort of chemical reaction or something and that results in a shell forming around them.... But then how do they roll while in shell-mode? Anyways, I'll try to work on it.

How I am envisioning this is:

Bonnie manipulates soil/ground particulate so that it adheres to her hide, providing an extra layer of defense and also offensive boost in the form of spikes. When she rolls, the sand acts like chariot wheel spikes or something.

This is something you would have to develop as an original move. It would most likely be physical, and would take some training. It could be a super rollout or something (better name pending). For now, defense roll does not make rollout stronger.

I'm going to tally up the votes and read through all the thoughts, now.
>>
>>36720418
Also you have Phoenicia as a water technician in the doc...just a minor thing, but I'm making a big deal about it...sooo...

You and Dani keep your Sandshrews close but towards the “back” edge of the building’s roof. The two of them, Bonnie and Clyde, enjoy spending time together. You’re actually much more glad that you caught both of them, now, and not just because you have another ‘Shrew. Phoenicia and Vlad are roosting in a nearby tree, only a whistle away; Mittens, Apollo, and Driver are with you on the rooftop, patiently waiting.

Math is keeping watch on the treeline, a pair of digital binoculars at his eyes and the cigarette hanging limply from his mouth. Nick is flipping, spinning, and twisting a Pokeball in his hands, a bored expression on his face.

Math finally speaks up again:

“I see one.”

You and Dani both tense, and your breath hitches. You slide her off of you and then move towards Math, keeping on your hands and knees. The roof is surrounded by a three-foot tall opaque glass wall. Math is currently huddled near the corner closer to the other half of the Maintenance tower, where there’s a tiny break where the wall meets the edges of each building. His binoculars are jammed into that gap, and as you get close you see the digital image of a Scyther near the edge of the tree line about 300 meters away or so. It looks around a bit before shuffling back into the brush.

“You think he’s interested? Is there more than one?” Your mouth is dry, and your eyes are glued to the screen even as you talk to the Ranger.

There’s a loud, screeching cry. Then another, and another. More and more.“

If there weren’t before, kid, well fuck if there aren’t more now.”

>CONT.
>>
>>36720921

You curse a bit under your breath. Dani sidles up next to you, asking “what’s wrong? What was that screeching?”

You tell her that it may be more than a few incoming.

“Well is this normal, Math?” She asks, Driver clutched to her chest. “How many can we handle?”

Nick speaks up, still sitting at the far edge of the roof: “He doesn’t know. We’ll just have to do our best, or something. Or die. That’s an opti-“

Math hisses at him, still searching the screen on the binoculars. “Shudd’up, you dumbass. Here they come, 6 of them – get ready.”

Holy shit – this was just supposed to be a scouting party. Why is a whole half of the fucking pack here?

>>>>

The Scyther sprint across the clearing, nothing stopping them or slowing them down except from a few tense seconds when they stop to sniff the air. The leader always pauses to do this, or what you assume is the “leader” at the front. The rest of them, about your height but half more as long as you are tall, always stop in unison with the lead. They stop and start again a few times, making their ways towards the bait while spreading out slightly.

They must be wary of whatever put the carcasses here in the first place and are checking to see if it’s still around. Clever.

They’re within spitting distance (if you’re a Buizel) now, and one of them finally dashes forwards and starts on the meat laying at the foot of the building. You, Math, Dani, and Nick all sit on the roof, hidden from sight and scent, listening to the buffet happening below. Math looks over at you, giving a questioning “Are you ready?” look.

You make a slicing “Stop, quit” motion to Math, who nods and just settles back against the wall. The next few minutes are tense, almost surreal. The sounds of chittering, screeching, and lots of devouring. You hear bones break and skin get ripped. Finally, when you figure they’re almost done with their meal and should be sufficiently busy you set Apollo up near the edge of the roof and bring your whistle to your lips. Dani, Mittens, Nick, and Salem all wait on your command.

>93

You blow, and a shrill tone fills the air. Apollo leaps over the wall and comes alight in midflight. Salem leaps over as well, and you see Phoenicia dive through the sky towards the pack. Your hand whips to the belt at your side as you stand up. There’s a bit of stomping on the roof, and then Bonnie leaps over the wall followed by Clyde. You toss the ball containing Sheldon out, between where Apollo is fighting off a Scyther to his left and keeping another (badly wounded) pinned to his right. Your Squirtle appears, and after orienting himself begins lashing out at the first Scyther that was attacking Apollo.

“Mittens?”

“Yes!”

“Hit that one near Salem with a confusion!” Mittens reaches out and a second later the Scyther crumples onto its front-legs, teeth gnashing at the ground and back legs furiously carving trenches in the soil. Salem douses it with a fire, and then it stills.

Apollo roars at the Scyther he hit with his initial flame charge and knocked prone. It opens a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth, screeching back, as the Growlithe ignites once more and tackles the chitinous reptile. The Scyther, which you recognize as the largest of the group now, unfortunately is able to divert most of Apollo’s energy over its torso, and the Growlithe gets little more than a passing hit on its chest. The Scyther rolls over and back onto its haunches before batting Apollo away. Your red-furred friend yelps as he is hit but manages to land on his feet.

The lead Scyther roars, charging at Apollo. Despite his attempts to dissuade the charging beast with fire the Scyther charges through him, lifting him bodily and carrying him right into Sheldon.

“Fuck!” You turn to Mittens, asking her mentally to attack that lead Scyther. She nods, turning her attention towards the left side of the battlefield when…

There’s a growl of pain underneath you and you turn to Mittens, who is covering her ears in anguish. Shit! You knew that Bug-types had the ability to affect Psychics like this but you didn’t expect Mittens to get so close to one. You stand, backing away from the Scyther when…

Dani comes running up, straight at the bellowing Scyther, and then jumps: her legs straightening into a kick that lands on the side of the Scyther’s neck. It hacks and screeches, desperately trying to get ahold of the wall or Dani, and then a bolt of lightning strikes it. There’s a crackling, sizzling series of noises and the Scyther falls to the ground.

“That’s RIGHT! You BITCH!” Dani stands triumphantly, Driver perched on her head. “Gedda FUCK outa here!”

You’ll have to thank your girlfriend later, but for now there are more important things to take care of: Mittens, for example. You lay your Espurr on the ground and cover her ears, trying to talk to her gently and ask if she’s okay. She growls, mentally, saying that she’s “Okay. Grey need fight. Mittens protect Grey. You’re concerned: Mittens is special to you, she means a lot to you, and you’ve never seen her in this much pain before. She’s clutching her ears Desperately, and her eyes… are glowing?

She stares up at you, face at once suddenly going peaceful and arms pushing her up from her prone position. Where once she was pained and confused, now she strangely seems... stoic.

“TrainerGrey.”

“Yes?”

“We need go fight. Take me to fight.” She flashes an image of you grabbing her and jumping into the fray; you respond with concern, incredulity, and perhaps a bit of fear. She insists.

You relent, and wrap your arms around Mittens’s waist, putting her on your shoulder and then fishing out Nereid’s ball. You release the weasel, who takes on a tense pose and looks for the opponents. Seeing none immediately, she turns to you.

“Nereid, Assist!” The weasel nods, and you start towards the wall.

Nick, commanding Salem and Tripper, yells out a “What the fuck are you doing?” as you jump up and over the wall.

“Being a badass!”

You land, feet hitting the dirt and knees buckling under you. Your arms are wrapped around Mittens and clenching her tight to your chest. You stand, and flinch back as a Scyther charges you before a blast of foaming water hits it in the jaw, stunning it. Nereid bounds in front of you, staring the green beast down, and when it yells at her and brandishes its claws she leaps onto its face, gnashing and tearing at its eyes. Hell yeah, Nereid!
Mittens speaks up to you, drawing you back to the matter at hand. “Grey. Put me down.” You do so. “Get on ground, TrainerGrey. Mittens protect you!” You lay on the ground, watching as Mittens lifts her paws in the air.

There’s a quiet moment and then she brings them down, the weight of a Gravity attack hitting you in the chest and forcing the air out. It’s hard to breathe, and you can’t move.

Your eyes search the surroundings, and you’re not the only one. Most everything on the battlefield save Bonnie and Clyde has been brought to its knees. But Mittens isn’t done.

She sweeps her arms up and outward, her ears flaring as she does so. A visible disturbance of energy flows through the air, rippling and vibrating around the purple cat for but a moment. Then? It explodes outward, knocking Scythers around the field aloft or otherwise attacking their nervous systems. You reach down, hitting the “Emergency Recall” button on your Deck, and all of your Pokemon are recalled. You don’t want them suffering from the attack themselves, which thankfully seems to have purposefully missed you.

As Mittens is recalled the gravity returns to normal, and you stand up quickly. Salem, Vlad, and Tripper immediately spring to mind, and you see that all three of them have been weakened by that psychic attack. It’s powerful, but indiscriminate…

The Scythers, thankfully, are mostly diminished now; There are a few that are finding their legs again, but 3 of them are clearly out of the fight. The largest one is the only one that might still pose a challenge. You watch as it shakes and rolls its heads, the psychic side effects still tormenting it.

You…

>Note: The following scene is a Brownie Points scene, and only as canon as you want it to be.

You stare this larger Scyther in the eyes, daring it to try anything. It finally manages to find both of its legs, shakily meeting your gaze in return. It steps forward a bit, screeching and bellowing while spreading its arms. You wonder if the Scyther is trying to intimidate you when you look past its forms and see the two smaller Scythers trying to shakily scamper away. It’s regrettable, but you already have 4 here that you can potentially catch. This last one is going to be challenging, though; you’ll have to cut him down to size…

Cut. Hm.

You look to your right and, sure enough, the chainsaw that you noticed leaning against the main structure is still there. You keep your eyes on the Scyther as you back away, hand reaching Mittens’s container at your belt. The Scyther stays relatively still, circling a bit and keeping its arms at the ready for a strike. You take the ball in your right hand and, reaching back, finally touch the handle of the chainsaw with your left. You take a long gulp of air and, tensing every fibre of muscle in your body, release your Espurr.

There is a flash of light.

The Scyther lunges forward, stomping toward you at a ludicrously fast pace as you bring the chainsaw to bear. The scythe brings its right forelimb down, chitin meeting metal and sparking against the jagged belt of the saw. You push back, managing to shift its weight off of you, before it raises its hind leg as if to kick you. “Fuck!” you mentally scream to yourself. There’s no way you could dodge that-

You watch as the leg reels back, muscles and chitin operating in a deadly, harmonious union that's about to kick you into the next life. You taste bile, and try to push the Scyther away, or knock it off balance. It's no use, though, it has too much strength and power on you. You're screwed. Fuck.

>cont.

>>36722506

Another chainsaw comes barreling through the air, enveloped by a sheen of psychic energy; it strikes the side of the Scyther and knocks it off balance. The bugbeast begins flapping its wings in order to propel itself sideways and away.

Mittens comes to stand next to you, a chainsaw floating in front of her.

“I came.” You activate the priming mechanism.

“I chainsaw’d.” You pull the cord, and the engine blares to life.

“I fucked shit up.”

You raise the saw, you and your Espurr advancing menacingly on the Scyther.

A hallmark of Southern Shores is that rain can come out of nowhere; as a testament to that fact, fat drops of water have begun smacking the top of your head and bouncing off the chitin of the scyther. The wind blows, leading to a cold spray hitting the side of your head and the loose fabric of your jacket flapping about. You pull the main zipper up with your right hand, while your left holds the chainsaw downwards and pointed away from you.

You reach up, and pull the hood of your jacket around and over your head. Your breath fills the air with a slight mist. The landscape has darkened with clouds. The time for such an epic battle is nigh.

The scyther continues to fill the air with screeching roars, the hum of the rumbling saw only barely audible over the din. It paces in place, slightly; muscles tensed and claws bared. It’s panicky, and you can empathize with the sensation of adrenaline running through your body. You turn to Mittens, who stands with her arms crossed. The chainsaw held vertically in the air, aloft by the powers of her mind.

Somehow, she has also gained a hood; this one is brown and connects to a robe that trails past her feet and obscures most of her body.

“Remember, Padawan Mittens.” She looks up and over to you, your eyes meeting. “Remember your training: concentrate on the moment.” Your right hand finds the handle of the chain saw, and you rev it’s blades faster and faster. “Feel, don’t think! Trust your instincts!”

The Scyther leans back, forearms clacking against the serrated joints and chitin. It digs its feet in, and you and Mittens both take classic defensive stances; not only are you trained in capturing Pokemon, but you are an accomplished chainsaw duelist.

You shall win this duel...

The fate of the Galaxy depends upon it.

The Scyther bellows, the resultant saliva and stray raindrop spattering against you as the very wind rushes over your exposed skin. It rushes in, claws high and wings aloft. The very face of wild fury itself. A sight to behold.

You move to meet it, saw catching a left downward swing with a “CLANG”. You strain, motor hissing against the cool and the hot breath of the Scyther running over your cheek. Blood runs down your arm where a particularly sharp arm-blade caught you. Bitch.

You grunt, and then yell, squeezing strength out of every muscle in your body before pushing off the Scyther. Its momentum and weight diverted you dive towards its left flank to avoid a swipe from the right, your chainsaw singing out and catching its lower leg.

Mittens moves to fill your place, her psychic saw moving up and outwards in a purple arc that knocks the beast’s limbs away. You press forward from the left, knocking it over your shoulder. The scyther yells and twists, tail shooting out like a whip with just a fraction of a second between impact and you lifting your blade. Another collision, and your heels are forced backwards in the dirt.

“Master Grey!” Mittens calls out, ducking aside gnashing teeth and jumping onto the back of the beast. She brings her saw down with a heavy blow, knocking the tail away and leaving you space to retreat.

The scythe pushes up from the ground, and Mittens is forced to jump away from its form, flipping in the air and purple chainsaw deflecting an errant elbow attack.
You’re quickly losing steam and if Mittens’s heavy breathing is any indication, so is she…

You….

“Are you ready, Padawan Mittens?”

“Yes! MasterGrey! Mittens Ready!”

The two of you brace yourselves, Mittens slightly in front of you, as you watch the Scyther clamber back onto unstable legs and turn to face you. It’s mighty determined, and seems to have refused to go down peacefully; as chainsaw Jedi, you had hoped to end this peacefully…

Aw, what the hell are you talking about? You were hoping for a fight of epic proportions!

The Scyther focuses itself once more, perhaps for a final charge. You watch as an ethereal form begins to collect around its arms, blades forming. Wicked, guillotine-like blades. One on each wrist. You tighten your grip on the handle of the chainsaw, mentally telling Mittens that this is it: all or nothing. You have to hold this beast back, and silence it once and for all.

The Scyther charges once more, tail lancing back and forth as its powerful legs plough through the loamy soil and grit. Time seems to slow, and you see glistening sheets of rain fly from its green form.

You tense your legs and work the timing over with Mittens with mentally: “One.” The scyther crosses its bladed arms, screeching and hissing all the while. “TWO.” It’s steps away now, and both of you dig your feet into the ground, staring down the charging Monster. “THREE!”

You leap, both ‘saws lancing out and upwards to deflect the slashes of the Scyther. Mittens arcs up and over the Scyther, her limbs and form further propelled by psychic energies. You jump out and away to safety while your chain manages to find purchase on the Scyther’s face. It drags along the hardened surface of its cheek with the shrieking, grinding sound of violence. The beast yells, turning towards you and going for another slash. With but a moment to turn about you spin on your heels and deflect an overhand blow. Both arms strain, pullling against the momentum in order to parry a thrusting punch with its wrist joint.

This thing just won't quit.

>cont
>>
>>36723770

The beast won't quit, but while you still draw breath you won't either.

You stand, swinging your blade down with both hands; the Scyther had drawn away, curling its arms into itself. Your swing breaks its defensive posturing, leaving it open. With both arms knocked away you swing upwards and leave a nasty gash down its front. The Scyther screams, and you scream back.

The sounds of your challenge fill the air.

You go for another overhead swing, but the Scyther swings around, tail bashing your blade away from your grasp. You search for an opening, an option, something.

"Fuck!"

You curse and then swiftly bring your arms to bear to take the brunt of the backswing. You are knocked into the wet dirt, your arms aching and your body burning from the shock.

You look up as the Scyther advances on you.

Is this the end…?

“Then I go to be one with the Force.”
You close your eyes and wait for the cold embrace of Death.

But it does not come.

No, Mittens comes to your aid: There is a screech and the painful howling of a Scyther driven to its last throes. You look up and see your Espurr there, two chainsaws weaving an intricate and violent dance against the wild swordsmanship of the Scyther. Their blades clash again and again, and you are unable to take your eyes away. It is both beautiful and terrifying. The hood has fallen away from Mittens’s face, and a bolt of lightning from the sky illuminates the grim determination on her face.

She yells out, the chainsaws swinging behind her, holding for a moment and then crashing into the Scyther. It is knocked off its feet, and one of the saws falls into the dirt near you. You rise once more, taking the handle and yanking the metal from the earth.

You break into a run and Mittens meets your stride. The Scyther looks on in dismay at the charge of Death.

You and Mittens both leap, chainsaws revving out an unholy song, and then come down like heavenly bolts on the beast: piercing it.

The battle is over.

You throw your chainsaw aside and it hits the ground with a loud thump. All that leaves is the steady pouring of rain, the sounds of heavy breathing, and your exhaustion. You drag yourself over the Mittens and pull her onto your lap. The poor thing is just lying on the ground, face up, until you lift her and cradle her body. She must be getting bigger, because it’s certainly not easy moving her.

Or, morel likely, it is your exhaustion and bloodloss catching up with you.

You pull out your spare pokeballs from your jacket’s interior pockets, expanding them and then pointing one at each Scyther. You throw them in order, your arm still pretty solid despite the wound to your right arm. Then you watch as the Scythers digitize before being contained within the balls, safe and sound.

You turn to Mittens and begin running your hand over her head while searching her visually for any serious wounds. Aside from some scrapes and bruises she seems to be doing alright albeit exhausted to the core. You whisper to her aloud, asking “So, which one of those Scythers do you think would be the best teammate?”

She replies with a short, tired “Smallest one. Or, Bigbigone. Small one not too mean. Bigbigone respect you, maybe? Maybe respect sawchain?”

“Chainsaw,” you correct her and she nods, understanding.

“Chainsaw.”

>>>>>

You tuck Mittens into her container to rest and recuperate before collecting the Scythers (all four of them) and then clambering back onto the roof. Thankfully it’s not completely open air and there is a metal and plastic cover over each building in the structure. You figure Rangers must use it for observation when out here.

Anyways, your friends haven’t drowned from the rain while unconscious; and that’s what they are, unconscious. The psychic attack that turned the tide of battle earlier must have affected them too.

>cont
>>
>>36724739

You wake each of them up, gently, and make sure there’s no permanent damage. Each set of eyes dilates properly, and reflexes are fine. Math, Dani and Nick are well enough if not just very groggy. Some serious headaches, but the nurses should be able to take care of that.

Once Dani gets a good look around and wakes up to realize that the battle happened, and is actually over, she jumps at you and wraps you in a tight hug.

“Fuck! Are you okay? What happened? Did anyone die?” Her lips are moving at the speed of light. “Ho'shit, Grey! Where are the Scythers? Shit!" You notice her legs are shaky and she seems pretty panicked. You ease her down. "Why was I asleep?”

You tell Dani to hold on before rummaging around in your pack, finally pulling out some pain or headache medicine and a drink. You distribute this to Nick, who’s just holding his palms against his eyes and cursing; Math, who is shakily trying to light a cig; and Dani, who hits the Emergency Recall button on her Deck before slumping against the railing.

All three of your companions take the medicine and drink greedily but gratefully. Then you briefly explain what happened while they were out: gravity, psy-nami, and then fighting off the last standing (and biggest) Scyther. You don’t mention the chainsaws or anything, and instead insist on getting everything onto the wagon and heading out before the storm worsens. Everyone agrees but with the insistence that you do most of the work.
Thankfully, there’s not much work to be done and you soon have the Rapidash hitched and the wagon rolling back to the West.

You get yourself bandaged up in the wagon; the slash on your arm wasn’t too deep and your bruises weren’t too painful. They might be tomorrow, but that will come when it does. Dani just lays in front of you, groggy and silent, for most of the trip. You rub her head and neck gently and go over the chainsaw fight. She laughs and chuckles a bit, maybe even shaking her head in disbelief. Nick just says “taurosshit” every time you mention deflecting an attack or otherwise “using the Force.” Seems he’s a nonbeliever.

Or he’s just a dick. Either way, you don’t have the energy to convince him so you let Mittens have the honors. He flinches away from her at first, but you assure him her mental intrusions are painless. Mittens touches him and then he Sees. The shock is on his face, yet he still insists that “it couldn’t have happened. Mittens… must be imagining it too.”

“It’s pretty unlikely that Mittens could fabricate or lie about something like this, right Mittens?” Your partner nods determinedly, paws crossed in front of her chest. “And, besides…” You turn away from Nick in an attempt to be dramatic. “You’re just jealous of my Jedi powers.”

“Are you talking about the old Pre-Dark movie shit?” You give him a Look, and he laughs before burying his head in his arms and knees. “You’re a dumbass with no Jedi powers and no proof.”

“I have the scars to prove it, scrub!” He looks back up at you and sparks fly between your gazes.

Dani just brings a hand to your face, causing you to recoil and sputter, and says to “Shut up, both of you… Seriously… head ache.”

You apologize. Then, she looks up at you and apologizes for her tone. You forgive her.

Silence returns to the cart. Unfortunately, you can’t leave it alone and add in a quiet “Whatever,” with a shrug. “I’ll have the badass scars and the Scyther to prove it.”

Mittens nods one more from her curled up position at your side before adding her own response.

“And Mittens good with chainsaw. Mittens show Nick sometime.”

Nick just shudders at that. You do too, admittedly.

You feel the wagon slow, and are able to snap back to alertness; you had almost fallen asleep. You help Mittens, Dani, and even Nick out this time before walking to the front of the vehicle where, to your surprise, Math is getting chewed out.

“… and this may be the LAST fucking thing you EVER do as a Ranger, yah dumbshit sonnuvabitch!” It’s an older ranger, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and the standard full-body armor that Rangers take on dangerous outings.

“What in the HELL were you even thinking?”

Math just throws his cigarette on the ground, stamping it out before looking up and starting on a response. The older Ranger cuts him off, though.

“Nah, don’t even bother, dumbshit! I got your answer,” He moves as if to grab something from his pocket, but then snaps out his right hand in a fist. “…Right here!” He socks Math in the stomach, knocking the wind out of him; you watch with a bit of anger as he crumples over. The man bends over him, hand loosely on Math’s upper back. You think about stopping him, but damn if you aren’t fatigued. You're not even sure whose side to take, either.

Eh, he's an asshole but he did help us out.

“Yer lucky all of you didn’t even die, new kid. Nah, you’re not a new kid anymore; you’re just dumbshit.” He stands up and moves towards the Rapidash. “Just because everyone was out taking care of some damn Rhyhorns doesn’t mean you get to sneak out a fuckin’ horse, a fuckin’ wagon, and go off endangering some kids!”

He stops when you thrust your hand in front of Math’s kneeling form. “It’s not his fault; I asked him to do it. He was helping us, and without him we might have died or something. I was going to do it anyways and convinced him to come along. It’s my fault.”

The old man harrumphs, peering over crossed arms at Math with squinted eyes. You think that’s the end of it for now, but, Math unfortunately wheezes a “f-fuck you, old m-man…!” Which elicits a sneer and a laugh.

“You’re even too good for cleaning the stables like you were suppose’ter, so you had them do it! Dumbshit.” The old man looks back at you, and you shake your head from your spot in front of Math.

Nick, bless his dick heart, actually throws in a nice response here: “You’re the shit for punching him; he’s still recovering from a psychic attack and you go on and suckerpunch him you old fuck!” You and Dani both nod in agreement.

The old man shakes his head and then sets to work on unhitching the Rapidash. “Math’s always'n a piece of shit, alright? And he deserved’t; still, glad nobody’s dead. Even you, loudmouthed shit." He points as Nick.

"Now get’m out of this rain or something. And thanks’r cleaning out the shit.” He walks away, flaming horse in tow. But then he stops, turns, and looks you in the eyes. “Next time? No dumbass ideas. You could’er gotten your friends killed, Sortie.”

Yeah i learned my lesson, Math helped save our asses, won't happen again.
After we get Math sorted out and our mons and our selves healed up We gotta train/talk to our Scyther. Maybe call up Erica and mom afterwards. Also all of our mons get pettings of their choice they did good.

Chillax to the max. Maybe later check out our new scyther horde and divvy them up as we see fit.

We may as well ask her if she wants one, though she'll probably decline on the grounds she didn't help out.

Assuming she declines, maybe sell it. They're probably expensive and we could use the money to upgrade our battery mayhaps.

I am glad i caught this, nearly missed it due to work. How would the fight have gone if we didn't critfail? Will Mittens be a Meowstic soon?
>>
>>36726411
>How would the fight have gone if we didn't critfail?
We neutralised that critfail with a critsuccess (the 95+5)
>>
>>36726331
Where is our chainsaw?
>>
>>36726440
Critfail opened up the way for Mittens desperation attack. Without it how would the fight have gone?
>>
>>36726463
Critfails and critsuccesses both open up the desperation. Without the critfail we'd have had the critsuccess open it up anyway, though presumably without the scythers picking themselves up as much as they did.
>>
>>36726463

It would have gone alright, with you neutralizing two or three Scythers. The "Alpha" as you guys are calling him would have fled with the younger Scythers.

Also, feel free to ask for me to redo a scene in a style or just humorously for the cost of 1 Brownie Point. For example, "Scyther fight in the style of Space Jam!"

I'm fine without a chainsaw, we have a Scyther. Scythers are chainsaws on legs anyways. Is the league pokemon rankings reflective of said pokemons level? Like last we checked Mittens was 16 so would she be around 16th level?

>>36726590
Honestly most campers worth their salt would have one of those for emergencies anyways.
>>
>>36726590
Does the knife blade move?
And that's a compromise I can work with, it'd be more wieldy and less likely to damage our scyther when we spar with it. But it's gotta be a real big knife

The real question is, how much exp did we just earn for wiping a pack of scythers?
>>
>>36727564
Our mons won't just evolve they'll have to grow into it right? How soon will Mittens hit Puberty?
>>
>>36727737
A bazillion bazillion points. However, Grey is on a trade-only evolution tree. Sorry!

All of your Pokemon that participated gained a good amount of experience, but mostly they would have developed/aged because of the stress of the battle. Mittens did most of the defeating, and add that to the final showdown...? She gets most of the "experience," which translates into her Utility power/strength.

>>36727760
Yes, they have to grow into it which comes with battling and stressing/training themselves. Even if a 'Mon is defeated it still grows stronger: that's the body's natural response to stress. The key thing is keeping them healthy, well-fed, etc. so their bodies can rebuild properly.

Mittens is... approaching puberty rapidly, I suppose. Are you guys ready for the Talk?
>>
>>36727913
Don't have much choice do we? So how are the others doing? I imagine puberty is the transition for the 2 stagers while 3 stagers have an adolescent form I.E. Warturtle, charmeleon, Fletchinder.
>>
>>36727913
Is she gonna go through a Charmeleon phase...but with psychic powers...
>>
>>36727960

The time table for maturation to the adult, sexual reproductive stage changes from species to species. It doesn't clearly fall between "stages," either. For example, Squirtles reach sexual maturity in the late Wartortle stage, hence they grow the flashy tail and "ears." Particularly old, veteran Wartortles will become Blastoise as their bodies get put under greater strains over time / their needs change. This is mostly how it works for 3-stagers, with exceptions. For example, a Kakuna doesn't sexually reproduce.

The others are doing well; it's gonna take some time in-game for them to "evolve" but it will happen relatively soon IRL. We're not even past the first gym yet!

>Captcha: Danis
What about Dani, captcha...?
>>
>>36727913
>A bazillion bazillion points. However, Grey is on a trade-only evolution tree. Sorry!
So what you're saying is that if we ever get captured and sold as a slave we immediately evolve and stomp face?
>>
>>36728453
Yes. You evolve into a metal/normal type with dual-wield chainsaw hands.

BRRRRVVVVVRTVRTVRTVRT!

Thankfully, the only kind of slavery in this society is Pokemon ownership. Heyo!
>>
>>36728596
Question do we get any points for taking out a threat to the general public?
>>
>>36728623

No Ranger alert / Task request was issued so I'm afraid not. Actually, you were asked to stay AWAY from the Scythers, so you did the opposite of what the official line wanted you to do.

However, you still get ranking points just from owning the Scyther. So congrats on that.
>>
>>36728673
If we were to estimate the current levels of our pokemon for ranking them on 4champ, how much higher is the scyther than the rest?
>>
>>36728673
Does that mean we take 4th? Also does the bonus only affect rare/dangerous/scary mons or all of them? Do aforementioned rare/dangerous/scary mons get a bonus?
>>
>>36728737
You get points for ownership of any mon, with decreasing returns (obviously) for multiples; catching 30 Tauroses doesn't make you #1 or better than Gary Oak it just makes you look like a dumbass. The points are derived overall from team effectiveness and also the effectiveness/strengths of the individual Pokemon. A guy with a couple fighting types could wreck those Tauroses, so you're still a chump. Get me?

The stronger the mon in its overall utility/battle effectiveness the more points you get.

>Insult Ash "never evolve" Ketchum
>Shots fired

Ash loses all but Pikachu every time he travels out of his backyard. He is a chump, with all the higher level mons he has or had he should be a gym leader by now at minimum.

>>36728832

You're still at 5th place, but this may be liable to change once you finish the gym.

The scyther is a handful "point levels" or ranking points higher than Mittens; like 6 to 8 higher. It's pretty significant.
