Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you spent time with family, read some books, and discovered that your lil bro is an even huger shit than originally anticipated.

You slip past the curtain of hanging veins which half conceals the alcove and set off for the main house. Vasuda stands after a moment and brushes out her robes, adjusting her head wrap before following you through the gardens. Perhaps it's merely your imagination, but there seems to be a spring her step. A certain eagerness. You can only imagine she's happy to be able to walk without being in excruciating pain.

You stop abruptly in front of the curtain leading into your family's estate, whirling around to face Vasuda. She flinches, but only slightly. You still feel that tight knot of anger which has coiled itself through your gut constrict, the desire to cripple your brother flaring up once more. You tamp it down, in a low whisper to your former betrothed. “I'll go inside and speak with my brother. You ought to rejoin my family, wherever they may be. I'll be making an announcement after I conclude my conversation with Salil.”

She nods her head firmly, striding past the curtain and into your family estate with her head held high. You wait a few minutes by the door, until you hear the foyer door open and slam shut for the last time and the slurred conversations of important drunks fades away. Only then do you slip inside and begin to make your way towards the dining room.

You encounter your older brother on the way, who greets you with a light punch in the shoulder. “There you are, little brother. I was just sent to fetch you. You have an announcement to make, yes?”

You force yourself to smile. “Yes, but first I'd like to speak with Salil. I've a problem I believe he may be able to help me with. It's only just occurred to me.”

Your brother raises an eyebrow. “A business proposition, then? He joined us only briefly for dinner, then stormed off once he'd finished eating. He's probably in his old room, can't imagine what he's so angry about. Our father granted him the funds he needs and he's secured contracts for the goods at advantageous prices from our father's contacts.” Your older brother shakes his head, sighing. “I swear that one is worse than a woman during her blooding; moody and irrational at the best of times.”

You nod your head. “Truly, a unlikable bastard. Still our brother, much as we might prefer otherwise. Anyway, I will see you soon, I believe I still know the way to his old apartments.” With that, you clap him on the shoulder and the two of you part ways. You set off to find the atrium and from there the hallway which leads to the living quarters while Zaahir makes his way back to the dining room.

It isn't long before you find yourself standing in front of Salil's old rooms. You've little idea why he still maintains them, he's a home of his own now. A rather large and elaborate home from what you can recall. You raise your fist to the doors and knock three times, the faint sound of your brother's voice cutting off suddenly on the other side of the door. Who was he talking to anyway?

The door jerks open and you find yourself face to face with your brother. He tries to slam the door, but you freeze the hinges solid with barely a thought, let alone the expenditure of vys. He strains against he wood for a moment, putting his shoulder into it, but finds himself quite incapable of making progress. Eventually he huffs moodily and sulks across the room to a small, round table where four chairs have been set up. He slides into one, plucking up a half empty bottle of wine from where it sat on the table in front of his chosen spot.

You stride in after him, the picture of calm, and sit down at the chair directly across the table. He refuses to acknowledge you with even so much as a glance, so you're forced to speak first. “There's no need for such hostility, little brother. I've merely come to chat.”

He shoots you a glare, finally deigning to speak to you. “I've no desire to 'chat', Mikhael. I've nothing to say to you. Unless of course you intend to apologize for that little insult you paid me earlier.” He sneers. “Perhaps then I could be bothered to listen, whatever it is you have to say.”

You shake your head, expression somber. “I'm here for an apology, but not my own. I wish to hear yours. I figured I owed you at least the opportunity to make amends of your own volition, considering we are kin.”

He grins a sadistic grin, adopting a tone of clearly false affection. “Oh how kind of you, dear brother! Allowing me to apologize when I've done absolutely nothing which merits an apology. Truly, I owe you a debt!” He drops the pretense of affection. “Enough of your veiled threats, aghtaki. If you've something to say, spit it out. This game you play grows tedious.”

You shrug your shoulders, sighing regretfully. “Very well, little brother. Have things your way.”

You stand, pulling your cloak wide. Ever so slowly, one of Ricky's semi-transparent, ethereal tentacles slides out. It snakes its way across the table as your brother watches on in horror. Just as he opens his mouth to scream, it leaps forward and wraps around his throat. The tentacle constricts, squeezing until your brother's face is a shade of purple you didn't quite know Samjan could attain. Then it lifts him effortlessly into the air, his feet kicking frantically in mid air.

You watch him dispassionately, waiting until his legs fall still and his heart rate slows. Then you have Ricky let go. He drops like a stone, head smashing into the edge of the table on his way down. You stride over, towering above him as he wheezes on the floor, trying desperately to suck in air. Placing a foot on his side, you roll him over onto his back, staring down at him disdainfully. “I would recommend against beating your wife, women tend to dislike being smacked about the place. Maybe if you weren't such a vindictive little bastard she wouldn't-”

He interrupts you, croaking out a barely audible insult and then descending into a fit of coughing. You wave a hand absentmindedly, healing his bruised wind pipe and the concussion he earned when Ricky dropped him. “I'm sorry, what was that?”

He spits out the words. “Fuck you, Mikhael.” A pause to take in another shuddering breath. “Do you know what it's like, to have your wife call out your brother's name on your wedding night?” You wince. Damn, that's harsh. You can see why he'd harbor some resentments for an insult like that, but it's still no excuse to beat the woman. Especially not as severely as he does. “So fuck you, and mind your own fucking business-” He's pulled himself to his feet, apparently having finally caught his breath. “-I'll do as I please to my whore of a wife.”

You're a little irritated that Vasuda claimed not to know why her brother hated her. It seems fairly clear to you now. Still, you're in this deep... A touch of fire magic extinguishes the light in the room. Only the dim red light of the setting sun filters in through the windows behind him, giving the entire room a surreal atmosphere. You're immediately swathed in writhing tendrils of shadow, face partially obscured as your cloak fades from corporeality.

“I wasn't asking you to stop, I was telling you.” You're pleased to find your voice seems to echo around the room, making it hard to pinpoint exactly where it's coming from. It's a simple trick with illusions to make it seem as if creatures stalk through the darkness around you, their eyes glowing softly. Funny, the last time you pulled this sort of trick it was to scare off a few teenage girls. “You'll stop, or I'll give you over to the denizens of the void. They'll rip out your soul and consume your very being, depriving you of Pani's embrace. Mark my words.”

The light returns, the shadows vanishing, and your cloak returning to normal. Your younger brother stares at you wide-eyed, mouth agape, and sweating. You believe you've accomplished what you set out to do. With a sly grin, you turn on your heels and march out of the room.

Your little brother seems to find his voice as you walk away, calling out. “I'll report you to the guards! You've assaulted me and threatened my life! Don't think they won't relish taking off the head of some Aghtaki scum like you!”

You wave a hand dismissively, not bothering to turn around. “Join me in the dining room, little brother. I've an announcement to make. All will become clear.”

Several minutes later you find yourself seated on a plush cushion in the place of honor, cutting the succulent flesh off a chicken breast and heaping on a sweet sauce composed of nuts, dates, and various spices before popping the morsel into your mouth. It always has been one of your favorite meals, your great grandmother used to make it whenever she came to visit.

Darzi is seated to your left and your older brother to your right. All along the table are arrayed your siblings, and at the opposite end are seated your mother and father, his other three wives arrayed around him. Nadiyya has her infant twins seated on her lap, one of them slumped over against her chest and drooling while the other plays with her hair. Somehow she still manages to look imposing. Ayda chats with your sister Azra quietly, about what you're unsure. She seems quite amused by whatever it is. Finally, Semiha is speaking with Vasuda, who seems quite pleased about something or other.

You insisted that you wait for your younger brother to arrive before making the announcement. You've nearly finished your meal by the time Salil strides into the room looking much better than the state you left him in, if perhaps a bit pale. He shoots you a glare before sitting down next to Pratima and Duha.

>1x Crate of Sea Silk

To make sure we make a killing. Talk with our father.
Ask father to bring Salil in the room. And with all that he couldn't object

Honestly? Salil may hate us but he's probably smart enough to know that we're smart enough to know that we can't actually kill him because circumstances predispose us to being majorly suspect.
So for the event in which he says so to our face we inform him that ripping out someones soul doesn't count as kinslaying.

First of all, we're a Vatis. Even if we are unbanished we don't share any of his title claimants in the first place.
Second of all, his wife is our former betrothed and we don't really wanna off her.
Third and last of all, void threats>blackmail, and if you are aware that your enemy is going to play their hand you can use that to your advantage in your expectation of it to destroy them.

didn't know that had that ability in this setting.
But other than that. of the items I laid out I think we're good to put it for sale.
Considering we got our silk cloths for "cheap" at 80 gold. I can only imagine how much a crate full would be. especially when selling it at via our family trade ships to another country.

About that, If we are to do that I wanna know absolutely everything about the deal, the route, and what protections are in place for all the ships involved. Just basic jewry, here.
For the gemstone stuff I was mostly talking about how gemstones seem to be a focal point for enchantments in some of the weapons we've come across, no data yet on whether its superior to just enchanting the sword itself or whatnot, or if different quality gems mean anything at all.

So....Dubai (who would have fucking guessed?) have invented their own jetpack. This reminds me of a goal we talked about earlier but seemed to have forgotten. I'd like to propose that we add the creation of a lightweight alloy wing chassis paired with a small combustion engine, powered either by Vys or Skull-tech onto our to-do list. That would make traversing the Pavala much easier, faster, and safer from all the damn worms.

Sorry for the link. 4chan is being a bitch about metadata gaps.

>>
>>36711706
Then we oughta check! We may have been missing something good all this time.
>>
>>36711737
Skull Kid already showed us that he can harvest the ambient Vys around using simple materials and use it for impressive redistribution of momentum, so to speak. All we need to do is find a way to turn great wopping wads of vys explosions in something a little more consistent and manageable. Alternatively, we could use fabrics and stuff.
>>
>>36711663
Why not just use Zahhak?
>>
>>36711663
Nah, I'd rather just make the dragon knight suit after we deal with the Pa'vala and Elaudia.
Which reminds me, I think we should be able to develop some technique of, if not flight, but pseudo-levitation by making vys legs at least. Could help with utility and dealing with terrain.
>>
>>36711737
>>36711810
Oh shit anons, did you fucking forget something?!
I think you fucking did.
You forget that we're a fucking ENCHANTER.
Enchanted-fucking-techology, you whores. Eat it.
>>
>>36711848
That's the sort of thing that would cause the void to chimp out.
>>
>>36711833
With all our magical knowledge presumably we could just move the terrain itself to suit us instead.
>>
>>36711814
Zahak is a kid. Unless he somehow rapes the laws of biological thermodynamics, he's gonna stay a kid for at least a few years. We can observe him flying and use it to build a foundation on how to create better wingsuits and steering controls. Stuff like making observations of how he uses his tail as a rudder or the curvature of his wings.

>>36711848
Enchanting is highly expensive and the results of it will be highly unique, singular items. If we can find a way to create flight without the use of enchanting, we can create more of the platforms for our party without walking around drained a quarter or more of our Vys.

>>36711833
How about, the Desert is literally named "Wasteland of TPK." We need to find something to give us an edge over all those other suckers that thought crossing a thousand mile expanse on foot while beset by the most hostile wildlife known to Samja was a good idea.

>>36711897
The idea of Jetpack wing-chasses is to avoid being noticed. No matter how much walking or how fast our walking is or how much water we have, we're gonna come to blows with something big, nasty, and mean. Even more so often if we start ripping out chunks of earth to save time walking. And we're hardly experiences in Earth, and know of no Earth Grandmasters.
>>
>>36711942
We develop Tremor Sense that works on sand, and use ice to travel.
I do not want to juryrig up some plane now. If you think we aren't ready for the Pa'vala, then there's no reason to go there yet.

Granted, she liked us more than we thought, bt still, you have to discuss that shit, not break your wife's ribs
I doubt we'll kil him, but I wouldn't mind fuckng Vasuda if we could do it without being a scumbag/too illegal.
>>
>>36712078
No, we aren't his keeper. And so she called out his name during sex (to her arranged bethrothed) and we should feel pity for him beating his wife? Fuck no anon
>>
>>36711998
That's an egregious use of water, something that we still haven't planned for how we're going to store, and still leaves us vulnerable to the worms who on are pare with Dragons and Hydras in mastery of their element. So we know the worm is coming great. What are we gonna do when we have to fight a hundreds foot monstrosity with Earth grandmastery? In every single way this plan is more dangerous, risky, and resource consuming.

>>36712055
We won't be spending that much time on it. All we have to do is observe Zahak to build a functional and maneuverable idea of flight and what flying chasses would need to work. Then, we ask Skull-Kid to refine his Vys designs to create more stable and consistent expenditures, and assist him with our knowledge of enchanting and Vys if necessary. You can think of this exercise as building up to the requirements of an actual airship.

We have been told again and again by our most well-learned elders that going into that desert is akin to suicide. If we can simply fly *over* those threats, we shall stand a much greater chance of survival. We can also use these in other explorations to cover more ground, like in the Jungles of No Return.

We could use ice and build a sort of roller coaster track that recycles the ice from the back end and moves it to the front end so we dont leave a 3 mile long trail of ice before it melts. I figured we could freeze many large blocks of ice (say 1 yard cubed) from the ocean, which could also be a nice training lesson for our companions who are atleast proficient in water magic, and store them in the cloak. Yeah its a little batshit insane and i doubt it'll ever be put into action, but god dammit i want mik and co. to ride an ice roller coaster into the desert if just to see the reactions of people we pass by.

That stills leaves in the air the question of whether or not spraying the water everywhere to freeze the environment and sliding us and our companions along will result in the water being contaminated, or if the environment will evaporate it, or if that's even enough. You might think that a barrel is a lot of water, but splashed onto the ground in a hot summer's day, it'll be gone in fifteen minutes and cover scarcely 10 feet squared in half an inch of water. Lastly, Ice-sliding will cost an enormous amount of Vys. Yes, we're Grandmasters and have much more control over water, and are the most competent member of our party. So why would you want to travel using a method that taxes us the most heavily and forces us to use Vys day after day?

You reach into your cloak, withdrawing a single envelope with the seal of the Shah stamped in red wax on the front. “I have been unbanished by Padishah Kadir, my rights and privileges as a nobleman, though not yet formally. He intends to make the announcement with fanfare and ceremony once his reign is more secure, though he did not feel it wise to do so after only just barely surviving an assassination attempt. However, he has sent out letters across the land declaring my unbanishment to those in a position to have me arrested for being an Aghtaki.”

Your father is smiling as wide as you've ever seen him, while some of your siblings seem to be in various stages of shock. Salil seems first shocked, then furious, and then crushed. He refuses to meet your eyes, or even look at you. Instead focusing on the murals which line the walls. Darzi merely smiles from her position at the table on your left, she seems quite pleased with you, and presumably with the reactions of your family.

Suddenly the room burst into activity. Zaahir congratulates you, clasping your forearm briefly before you're pulled away by your ecstatic mother, blabbering on about how she's so proud of you, she always knew you were destined for greatness, she can't wait to see you riding through the streets atop a chariot like a conquering general at their triumph. A dozen voices are calling out, asking you to tell them what happened and how you managed to convince the Shah to unbanish you.

I never spoke of wanting to use the ice-slide method of travel. It seemed to me as silly as the wingsuit method of travel.

Once more, let us first consult the resident Pa'vala semi-expert, and then create countermeasures to the problems he brings up.
>>
>>36712257
we should ask soma more about beating culture..before we do any of that.
far as we know. beating your wife was an okay thing to do, if she even had an eye lash out of line.
There are countries around the world where they stone people to death..now a days..

I have 4 you want them? Actually 3 you can't have one of them.

>>36712285
So why would you want to travel using a method that taxes us the most heavily and forces us to use Vys day after day?
because ice slide of course, but like I said i highly doubt it will be put into action but half of being a mage is dabbling with crazy so just wanted to throw it out there.

Everyone is excited, everyone save Salil of course, but fuck Salil. What's important is that your family is playing host to the second man in the history of Pidjata to have their banishment revoked. Someone fills a cup with wine and presses it into your hands, and Pratima pulls you into a tight huh while blathering on about how you have to tell her the story. Duha's reaction is far more reserved, but she still joins her sister in demanding the tale from you. Even Azra seems as if she'd like to say something, though she doesn't. You hope she feels guilty about turning her back on her family.

Eventually you manage to get back to your seat. Salil has stormed off, and Zaahir is filling your cup again. Your mother preens herself like a peacock, head held high and back straight. Even your Nadiyya seems impressed by your accomplishments, and she's a notoriously hard woman to impress. Your father sweeps a hand in your direction once everyone has calmed down for the most part, and the room falls silent to allow him to speak. “Well? I believe you still owe me the full tale of your adventures so far.”

You spend the next several hours entertaining your family with the stories of your travels. The people you've met, the places you've seen, the ruins you've delved. You talk about Siege! and your hopes for its future. You talk about the strange dimension you found yourself in after you wandered through the portal. You talk about discovering dragons far beneath the surface in the Mines of Longia.

Well, even if so, he was still being a wife-beating shithead who bought shame on the Abdul-Hakim name.
So we can just not assume she's in the right and discuss it with her, after we gt a better handle on nature and can discern what vys colors mean so we know what she feels.

Of course, you do leave some few details out. You mention the assassination of Lord Spiros but spin it in a light more positive than contract killing. That is, you claim to have discovered his plot to have a mercenary army pillage his town as an excuse to seize control of the Academy. Not wholly untrue. You leave out Zahak, still unsure whether you should mention your adoptive son. Likewise, you avoid discussing some of the more disturbing details of the void, or that little incident in that bar in Skull Kid's home dimension. You'd like to keep the mood lighthearted, and focused on your many successes. Not your few failures.

Your audience seem quite impressed by what you've seen, learned, done, and especially the riches you've earned. You provide a few minor demonstrations of your various artifacts, though cannot properly demonstrate your most valuable possessions. Your armors. Were it not for the Rhynian armor you bought from Sadik and the Warlock armor you discovered in Fort Longia, who knows how many times over you would've died.

You tell your tale all the way up to the point where you watched the Varistha step into the water and set off to meet his demise. By the conclusion of your little tale, you're just a little bit drunk and very, very happy. To have the admiration and respect of almost your entire family is a wonderful thing. Honestly, you're touched they've been so accepting of you since you returned. You were expecting more dirty looks, whispered gossip, and scorn before you made this little announcement.

A royal guard who was Banished because it was believed he killed the Shahanshah. He is said to have snuck back into the Royal Palace and labored as kitchen staff, then when the same man who actually killed the Shahanshah attempted to eliminate the heir, who was proving to be problematic, he protected the Shahanshah from a spell and killed the would-be assassin. He was unbanished posthumously.

Since you seem like one of the more intelligent chaps around, I'd like you to keep in mind that this desert is known for destroying Sanity, something that we're already a bit disadvantaged in. With that in mind, please remember these three things:

1) Constant Meditation without sleep is bad for Sanity. We have been told this leads to deteriorating mental conditions and losing our grasp on reality. We need to make every effort not to have to meditate in the literal desert of mindfuck, which is a great reason to develop transportation methods that don't require constant additions of Vys.

2) Earth Creatures are excellent at draining Sanity. We have learned that Earth magic, the specialty of creatures in the Pavala, can be used to hurt us mentally. As such, we need to avoid fights and have mechanisms for escape available to us, such as say, escape jetpacks.

3) We don't have to bring everyone. Mortia won't have that many plants to work with, and the animals that do live there have been stewing in the essences of dead gods for centuries. Skull Kid...well, I don't think I need to list all the reasons why he should be the last person to come with.

The only possible legal polygamy route involves Darzi and other as yet unmarried and unrelated Smajan ladies. Even if we killed our brother, we would not be able to marry his widow on pain of her death. Copulating with round ears and mutants lead to banishment and them being put down. etc.

Sea trade routes are free gold if you don't lose ships capturing them. And also, there's no way to tell who took the trading vessels unless it gets recorded and passed on and also no place to put blame if it happens in sufficiently neutral waters.
Which is one of the reasons IRL high-seas piracy got squashed.

With your story concluded, you call across the table to your father. “As I mentioned, I've founded something of a business with a friend I met in Anthus. He's human, but he's proven reliable so far and clever as well. A grandmaster Earth vatis, among other things. Sales of our books are high, and the money is rolling in, but revenue is starting to slow. We've got a lot of excess stock. I was hoping that with the power of our family behind my venture, we might expand our market to Pidjata, and the other coastal city states in the provinces, or even to Old Rhynia.”

Your father seems hesitant. “A tempting offer, I would like to know exactly how much you've made thus far before I would be willing to use family resources to advance your venture. If it's selling as well as you say, then I could lend a few ships to your cause and perhaps get you in touch with the booksellers I know, who could help to distribute your product throughout El-Amin.”

Your father always has been cautious when it comes to business. “I'll get in touch with my associate and get concrete numbers for you tomorrow. I'm only in town for a few days, after that I need to move on to the next task on my to do list. However, I ought to be in town long enough to get this settled.” You pause, considering what you're about to say briefly. “Are there any projects you need investors for? I've plenty of wealth to spare, and if the pay-off seemed worth it I'd be happy to provide some funds.”

(1/3)
>>
Your father perks up. “Actually, there is something. I have managed to negotiate a deal with the Guild of Dockworkers to commission a new fleet be built to restore our family's naval power. As I'm sure you know, this is no small undertaking. I've already contributed five thousand silver and I've numerous investors who have contributed their own funds. So far we've raised forty seven thousand silver for the construction of five boums rated at six hundred tons and equipped with ballista and crewed by experienced sailors. We need six thousand more to finish paying for the last vessel. If you invested, you'd get an eight percent stake in the profits from any and all cargo the vessel carried for the next ten years.”

You have six thousand silver on you, right now. You could produce it in an instant. Somehow, that thought makes you giddy. It's strange to be so personally wealthy. Your father thinks for a moment, and then speaks again. “We've also been considering breaking ground on a new mine at the base of the mountains, our surveyors discovered a rich vein of lapiz lazuli in the high valleys. We would need about... oh, three thousand silver would do for a start. If you were seeking to invest, that is. You'd get a ten percent stake in the mine upon completion, which you'd keep until such a time as you sold your share to someone else.”

Hmm, you could always invest in both, you have the money. The mine will take longer to get started up and likely deliver lower profits, but it will probably ultimately pay out more. The ship on the other hand sounds like it's almost done, they've presumably already begun work. You could expect to see rapid returns, but in the long term you'd make less.

And I have plans for great expansions that will surely milk any of those Vatis for gold. I also believe that if you manage a larger return for my investments, then a greater return for your investments into the proliferation of Siege! to vatis everywhere is also absolutely certain."

I think the subsequent increase in profits you'll see due to the lack of a massive pirate base in the middle of your shipping routes ought to merit a bit of a reward. As for the mine, I'll gladly provide more funds than you've asked if it means a higher share of the profits, a share I leave to your discretion. There will certainly be many would-be adventurers and even Aghtaki that will take this opportunity to gain a foothold to replace and reap the benefits of the previous pirates. It is likely the ships will need additional protection at some point, and the risk for them may not be countered by the experience of their crew, and for this I believe a larger return of investment is reasonable."

"As for the mine, I believe some discussion of the materials themselves gained is warranted. As you know there are many grades of quality for Lapis Lazuli, there are grades that are fit for being finery, near jewel-like, some are fit for being polished into decorative tile for walls or flooring, and some is rough and lacking in clarity.
Where I'm going with this is that for Siege! I plan to buy materials to make specialty figurines(it is at this point we illusion some examples up), things which would be made in small quantity to keep their rarity. But what's more is that with differing levels of quality materials available we can have low-grade to high-grade figurines, and stagger each release so that the wealthier Vatis get their pick of beautiful figurines, while those not so willing to spend for the beauty may still obtain them, at a greater price than the cost of production of course.
This is something which could be done for a multitude of rare minerals and I had planned it for many others as my own skills in Earth magic increased, but with the availability of this mine which shares many investors, I believe you see where I'm going with this. By taking a cut of the investment in the mines as various grades of materials, I could double or triple their worth with the right amount of time and the popularity of Siege! And if you're part of the businesses which distribute Siege! it is likely you would gain greatly as the popularity of it increases, especially with the staggering of quality and other such future releases I have in the works."

"In reference to the ships and rebuilding our family naval power, I feel there is more to worry about than simply the quality of men and material we supply them, or the obvious power vacuum created by the loss of a great band of local pirates.
What I'm speaking about of course is power of connections, and connections which pay well.
Though I feel slightly remiss to mention it, there is an elven warlord to the north, who is no doubt still at war. It is well known that those who supply quality equipment or luxuries to people in wartime, to either side of the fighters, are bound for wealth as the premium value of goods and materials swiftly ferried from destination to destination on the high seas are often considered the easiest kinds of goods to access, and can therefore be charged greatly for them.
There is also the benefits of providing merchants there reliable forms of income in their own right, as they have little else to turn to for diverse markets if their countries are at war or pillaging one another.
One nigh too risky method I can think of is playing them for transportation, for if they lack vessels as competent as ours we can simply loan them the use of our ships' storage through contract, though I'd imagine after some time they would become targets of ire.
But the greatest potential benefit of trading with war-torn powers is in the trade of skills and experience, in rebuilding or in repairing that which has been lost or damaged, and of following the sights of battle-torn villages to lend food or construction material to them for their needs, -of course by charging them to the bottoms of their coffers for it, or putting them into shackling debt through high-interest loans.
Of course, it certainly carries its risks, but I believe its common knowledge by now that it is merchants who profit more from war than any king or pirate. And with your expressed interest in this dealings and their management, I believe the entire family and all your investors-

If you had bothered to read this anons other posts he agrees that we need to tell our father, but doesn't want to do it in a way the seems like we are only saying to to defame our brother.
>>
>>36715383
Right, we might consider telling him that when asking for our intervention dear sister in law wasn't completely forthright. Salil felt cuckholded by a man not even in the same country let alone when we make our triumphant return to home. He's still a shit though and needs to be reigned in, especially since his marriage was a political move. He's beating the Padishah's cousin here.
>>
>>36715421
Sounds solid.
>>
>>36715421
I don't think trying to paint Varuda as withholding that from us wrong; saying someone's name during sex or loving someone else isn't a crime, and its certainly not something to beat someone over.

I'm quite honestly baffled at the pity some of you feel toward Salil
>>
>>36715377
Wife beating is generally frowned upon, it pretty much always has been in Samjan tradition. However, not to the level it is in our society and in the past it was considered far more acceptable than it is today. Especially amongst hardcore Surya worshipers. Of course, in the case of Surya worshipers it was sort of like 'equal opportunity beatings'. Kicking someone's teeth in may as well have been their form of 'I love you'. Because really, why would such lowlife scum as Samjan, as all sentient beings, deserve anything save a kick in the teeth?

In terms of modern views, light beatings are considered 'okay'. Like spanking a child who gets into trouble. A good whack with a cane can do you good, keeps you focused. That sorta thing. However, that mindset is falling out of style among the younger generations, of which your father and mothers are apart. Generally corporal punishment is reserved for severe violations of the marriage contract; shit like cheating, failing to provide for all of one's wives equally, and the like carry some pretty severe punishments.
>>
>>36715483
>severe punishments.
Like?
>>
>>36715481
Not that anon but I don't feel pity for him. I want to approach the situation with a very calm fact-focused fury.
>>
>>36715481
Not pity, but understanding on why he did it mostly.
I don't know what the guys who don't want to tell our parents and his mom are thinking though.
>>36715483
So a good slap is okay, good to know.
reminds me of that interview where an actor said that some women need a good slap to set them straight.
>>
>>36715523
I don't actually see anyone saying not to.
>>
>>36715501

Death by a thousand cuts? Banishment? Brazen bull? death to wild beasts?
>>
>>36715383
Then perhaps the dude shouldn't beat his wife if he doesn't want to be defamed for it; its not like we'd be saying anything other then what we believe he actually did
>>
>>36715481
It's not sympathy, but we need to enforce a position of being somewhat impartial. Salil will no doubt want to make us out as an attempted wife thief if we don't cover our bases. Covering for her could be construed as Mik having ulterior motives. In this case he's intervening as a friend and as much as either of them could possibly want to rekindle their fondness from childhood it's a path that can't really be pursued nor is it a path that others can think they are pursing.

>>36715523
They perhaps fear it could cause a dangerous rift in the family and weaken the household considerably. If it led to a scandal the families reputation could be greatly harmed. If Mik is caught up in the scandal then it will make Kadir renouncing his banishment even more difficult and thorny. It isn't a matter to treated lightly even if I'm for informing our family.

Even saying it plainly with all facts, it'll still likely cause a rift.

Nothing Soma has indicated about the laws implies this was acceptable; if the brother gets fucked over for it is his fault.

You spread your arms wide, pleadingly. “Father, you and I both know there's a power vacuum in the Anthosian sea-” As you speak, you project an illusion of that massive cloud of ash and debris you saw rising skyward after you set off the gunpowder storage. It slowly collapses into that characteristic mushroom shape it had taken on as you sailed away while you continue speaking. “I caused it.

“With the threat of pirates gone and the Shah's navy annihilated I think the time is right for our family to step in as the defenders of trade along our western coastline. I think if you were to negotiate with the Shah you ought to be able to secure an arrangement which places our craft patrolling those waters in exchange for the Shah paying for ship maintenance and a portion of the men's salaries, or some other such compensation. I'm sure you could think of something.” The illusions shifts from a mushroom cloud to a massive stack of gold coins. “All of it adds up to me getting a higher share of the profits.”

Your father grins. It's a predatory sort of grin. “Ah! Son, you raise a good point. Yet, it could be argued that you've done more harm to our trade ventures than good. After all, what if we can't negotiate such a contract with the Shah? As you yourself have said, the Shah's Navy has been obliterated. It's barely a force worth mentioning. That means upstart pirates will flood the area and we'll have to pay even more out to these extortionist pirates to pass through their waters unmolested.”

(1/4 or 5)
>>
You wave a hand dismissively. “Remember who you're speaking with, father! The man who saved the Shah's life! I think you'll find him quite receptive to an arrangement between our two great families, and if he's not then I could always have a word with him.” You grin. “Or you could threaten to let slip my unbanishment before he's ready to make the announcement properly. He seemed quite afraid of appearing as a weak ruler.”

Your father thinks about your proposal for a long while, rubbing his hairless chin. Eventually he speaks. “Very well, but I can't offer you a higher share of the profits. What I can offer you is a longer period of return. Instead of ten years, I propose twelve.”

You scoff. “Twelve years! Father, this is a vessel which will serve our family for decades, perhaps centuries. Surely you could afford to allow me twenty years of profit from this joint venture of ours.”

Your father shakes his head. “Fifteen, that's the best I can offer. After all, I don't want you growing fat and complacent with a steady stream of income. I want you out there striving for the advancement of our family!”

You sigh dramatically. “Oh, very well than father. I'll trust your judgment.” Fifteen years was what you were really after anyway, and judging by how amused your father appears with the proceedings you get the feeling he suspects as much.

“Now, as for this business with the mine...” Your father raises an eyebrow. “I'd like to invest more than you ask, four thousand silver, and I offer an additional proposal as well. I have with me fine silk of both the usual and sea silk varieties, as well as a large amount of incense, gemstones, opium, and spices. We are talking large, large quantities. What I would propose is that I leave some or most of these goods with you to sell to your buyers, taking a percent of profits as further funding towards the completion of the mine while the rest of the money you keep in trust until such a time as I can collect it.”
(2/4 or 5)
>>
>>36716000
>Your father grins. It's a predatory sort of grin.
Oh god the master jew comes out.
>>
>>36715951
I expect Soma won't do multiple tread tonight, it's Thusrday after all.
>>
Your father rubs his chin. “I will need to have an assessor come and look at your goods, but I believe we could work out some sort of deal. Yes, yes I believe we could. Now, for the thousand more silver invested in the mine I can give you twelve percent of the profit, but as for the money earned after selling the goods... well, we'll need to see how much we earn. It will be a point of negotiation.”

You hold up a finger. “Additionally, for my investment of four thousand silver I'd expect a discount on purchasing the lapis lazuli we dig up. Particularly the quality lapis, I have an idea for Siege! which necessitates a ready supply of rare and exotic materials and the further I can lower my overhead the more I can make in terms of profit. Keep in mind, this will benefit you as well should you ultimately decide to join in my venture.”

Your father nods slowly. “I see, well. I've yet to decide whether or not I plan on acting as distributor of your books, but I will say this. For a thirty-percent brokerage fee on the goods you have me sell I'll gladly offer you discount on purchases of lapis from the mine.”

You balk. “Thirty percent? Gods, Father! Here I was worried about scalping you. No, no. That simply will not do. Fifteen percent at most.”

The two of you go back and forth for quite some time before eventually settling on twenty three percent brokerage fee which will be funneled towards the construction of the mine, with any excess funds going to accelerate the mine's completion with the hiring of Vatis to speed the work along. Finally, your business seems concluded. Your father claps his hands together excitedly. “A wonderful chat, Mikhael! Invigorating, truly. I'll expect the money by tomorrow.”
(3/4)
>>
You look at him oddly, cocking your head to one side. “Tomorrow?”

Your father shrugs. “Well, yes. I mean, I suppose I could extend that timeline a few days but really, you shouldn't offer to invest with money you don't already-”

You stand up, removing your cloak and setting it out on the table. You let it sit there for a time, and then rip it away. Sitting on the table are four thousand silver coins crowned with four hundred golden coins, a silver mountain peaked with resplendent golden snow.

Perhaps not the best metaphor, in retrospect. You're glad you didn't say that out loud.

You father's eyes go just a touch wide, where as one of your sisters gasp. Pratima exclaims. “Gods, Mik! You walk around with all that? What if you get mugged?!”

You shrug your shoulders, refastening your cloak about yourself. “I'm not worried. My cloak has numerous strange qualities, qualities dangerous to those not myself or one of my friends. The last man who tried it merely vanished, as did his three comrades.”

You half expect three skeletal corpses to come tumbling out of your cloak, but they don't. You can't help but breath a sigh of relief. Eventually you father finds his voice again and speaks. “Well, I will... have that delivered to the vault. You certainly do have a flare for the dramatic, Mikhael.”

You grin. “I certainly do, father. I certainly do. However, it's getting terribly late and I really must be getting back to my Master's home. The rest of my party is expecting me there.”

Your mother frowns. “Really, Mikhael? Must you leave as the same day you arrived? Can you not stay the night here? We haven't even had the Baklava we made for you return yet!”

>Well, you suppose staying the night couldn't hurt. You needed to speak with your father about a number of things anyway...

You waver back and forth on whether you really ought to stay the night, after all you've got Zahak to worry about. However, in the end you decide you really haven't seen your family in... well, months. It's been almost two months you've been wandering and before that it must have been almost half a year since you'd really visited. Not to mention you really ought to talk to your father about Salil's... well, abusive tendencies. “Okay, Baklava has convinced me. I'll stay the night. I'll need to get in contact with my companions and inform them.”

Your mother squeals, just a little bit, getting up and wandering off towards the kitchen to fetch desert, presumably. You retake your seat at the head of the table. Darzi places a hand lightly on your shoulder as you sit back down. “I'll head back to Grandmaster Karim's home after desert, it hardly seems appropriate for me to spend the night with you at your parent's place.” You suppose that would be a touch more intimate than really appropriate between friends. At least, at your age. “I'll tell the others not to worry about you not returning.”

You wave a hand dismissively. “No worries, I'll get in touch with them via the brooches. Thank you, though. I appreciate the sentiment.” You switch to communicating with her via the brooches. {Make sure to take care of Zahak, I don't want him to think I've just left him. Tell him daddy is just going to get back a little later than he'd thought, but he'll be back soon.”

Darzi rolls her eyes. “Don't mention it, Mikhael.” As she says this, you simultaneously hear her voice resounding through your head. {I wouldn't worry too much, if I were you. He doesn't get nearly so much separation anxiety as it seems, he's just excitable. I mean, he is a dragon after all. They're sort of known for being solitary creatures. I'll be sure he gets a big fat goat and Chrys spends some time with him. Zahak seems to quite like her. I guess because they both have horns.}

You spend your time making small talk. You're surprised to learn that your brother had learned about Lord Spiros' assassination, but that he hadn't even imagined it could've been you who did him in. He'd heard that he was offed by a hooker. Of course, this leads into a little joking at your expense. He ask when you got into the business of selling your body for cash, and how much of that fat stack of silver and gold was ill-gotten. You counter by reminding him if any male of the family was going to end up hooking it would be him, after all he's had far more dealings in the sex trade than you have. If he's so fond of being a client, why not try it from the other end of things?

This leads surprisingly well into reminiscing about old times. You ask after his wife's health, and why she wasn't here tonight. From what you recall she was a pleasant woman, very clever, if not the best looking. He tells you quite proudly that she's soon to have their first child. They've been married for years now, so you're not surprised. Really, they're overdue for a kid. Conversation of children brings rise to the topic of your old friend Ismail Uzun.

He was one of your fellow apprentices who kicked up quite the fuss recently by having his mistress and their illegitimate children move in with him. Now, this isn't truly all that rare. What raised people's ire was the fact there was no pretense to it. She wasn't his made, or his cook, or anything like that. Just his mistress. The remarkable thing is that the Shah let him get away with it, although you're not sure if Kadir will be so kind.

Darzi ask what's so bad about keeping a live-in mistress, and why Vatis aren't allowed to marry. That sets you off on a several minute long rant about the hypocrisy of the ancient Hiacian Emperors. They feared a dynasty of powerful Vatis seizing hold of the country and turning it into a oppressive magocracy, even though the measures they took to prevent such did little save breed resentment and didn't actually prevent mages from seizing power on a number of occaisions. The Thousand Year Emperor, widely regarded as the best Shahanshah to ever rule Hiacia, was a Grandmaster of all five elements according to most stories you've heard about the man.

About that time your mother returns with a plate in each hand, each one holding a brick of Baklava about the size of your head. She sets one down in front of your brother and another in front of you, you push the massive stack of money out of the way with a simple Manipulate spell, she seems quite impressed regardless. It's fairly typical for the favored wife to serve her oldest son first, though a rare honor for her to serve her second oldest as well.. After that a team of slaves files into the room, each wearing plain white robes stitched with your family's symbol on the back. They set down a plate in front of everyone present and thus desert begins.

You're quite enjoying your Baklava about the time Nadiyya sits down next to Darzi, squeezing in between your companion and Pratima. She places one of her twin boys in Darzi's lap, with no warning save a “Hold him, for a moment.” She cradles the other in one arm, both seem quite fast asleep, so it's not much of an issue for Darzi. She still seems at least a touch flustered.

Those Greenpeace faggots should fuck off.

Nadiyya turns her attention to you. “Listen, Mikhael. This is important. When you were speaking with your father early you made a number of rookie mistakes. First off, you played your hand too soon with that protection racket business. What you should have done is merely hinted that you could put in a good word with that pompous ass Kadir and then revealed your plan after your father had already agreed to a lowered sum. If you just blurt it all out, then it loses all value. They already know what you were planning to tell them.”

Shit, that makes a lot of sense. How could you not have realized that. “Now, don't get me wrong. Your technique was good but your father was going easy on you. You need to learn to read people. For instance, when your father said it would be a point of negotiation later. You should have pressed him on it-” This goes on for several more minutes while you slowly eat baklava, doing your best to take it all in. Darzi seems quite uncomfortable at first with the child in her lap, but apparently the way it suckles on its thumb and nuzzles into her is quite cute. By the end of it she cradles it as dearly as if it's her own, making little incoherent noises at it. Women, you suppose.

By the end of your step-mother's lecture you feel that you've learned a lot. At least in theory. You really need to be more careful with what you say. Play your cards a little closer to your chest. You try to show off too much, apparently, even if you are charismatic enough to pull it off. You need to take that raw talent and refine it.
>Congratulations! Your Smooth Talker trait has been upgraded to Orator! You receive a +6 to persuasion and bluff rolls.

Yeah it was pretty stupid.

With her speech concluded she reaches over and pinches you lightly on the cheek, all while looking to all the world as annoyed as can be, then plucks up her son from Darzi's lap and wanders back to her spot by your father, one kid in each arm. She's always like that. A genius, without a doubt, but cold and just the slightest bit odd.

Once desert has concluded, people start to filter out. Darzi is the first to leave, excusing herself graciously and heading back for towards your Master's home. Semiha voices concern at letting her wander across the city alone at night, but Darzi just smirks and tells her she ought to worry more about the thugs soon to find themselves bleeding out in the gutter.

Honestly, El-Amin isn't that dangerous. Your brother excuses himself shortly thereafter, stating that he really must be getting back to his wife. He gives your father a hug and your mother a kiss on the cheek before taking his leave of the family. Which leaves just Vasuda and your younger brother to return to their homes, though your younger brother is nowhere to be seen.

>Ask to speak with your mother and father in private.
>As above, but ask to speak with Semiha as well. She's Salil's mother.
>Let it sit, for now. Just make light conversation.
>Inquire as to how your father's business ventures have been doing. Amidst all that negotiating you never did ask.
>Look for your younger brother.
>Write-in

It's a national historic sight. I mean, do you know how little survives from the neolithic? We're stuck looking at chunks of stone and trying to sorta kinda guess that this might have, at one point, been a tool. It's hard as fuck to say anything is definitely an artifacts, for sure. Massive man-made works of art from that era are thus invaluable, because there are so few in the world. It reminds us where we came from, and provides some limited insight into ancient religions in addition.

Granted, it's the sort of thing only history nerds care about.
