You cut through the chatter of the city, filtering out the pounding of footsteps and constant murmur of distant traffic. You etch little snippets of conversation out of the vehicle, and soon enough they bloom into full, coherent sentences, your grasp tightening. The two officers inside are talking about mostly mundane stuff – you guess they’ve probably been there for a while.

Someone does come by and ask what’s going on, though – some snazzy-dressed guy in fat shades, a cane tapping the pavement ahead of him. Their response doesn’t give away much, just that the incident is thought to be gang-related.

Hmmm. You wonder if this is something brought on by Creeper’s disappearance.

Turning to Laura, you –

Shadows cluster in your head, bright and white. Suddenly, just for a second, you think you see – see – the footsteps pounding away along the pavement around you, your stomach suddenly churning as you become aware of a hundred thousand momentary ripples moving through the earth. They shimmer over the curve of your skull like patterns on the surface of a lake, scribbling out tiny, previously unseen details in the lay of the street, before the entire orchestra of light and sound suddenly recedes.

Reality snaps back.

She regards you in silence, seeming not entirely convinced. You assure her that you’re fine and make your way to the Agency.

By the time you get there, the evening is just about underway, the sun slipping just ever so slightly towards the west. You knock, and don’t have to wait long before the girl from last time – Molly – opens it up. You get through a short barrage of questions about Laura, most of them regarding her hair or her eyes or how she gets her skin so soft (you’ve noticed that too, it must be a healing factor thing) before you manage to find your way upstairs.

Upon arriving in the main office, you immediately notice that Remy is still sound asleep, sprawled out on the sofa. Someone’s drawn a set of whiskers on his face.

On the other side of the room, the Blonde Phantom – dressed, as usual, in her stylish reds and really surprisingly obfuscating domino mask – swivels about on her chair, a cautioning finger pressed up against her lips.

The Phantom smiles broadly, her eyes scrutinizing you from behind her mask, like a cat’s.

“He’s fine. I assume he teleported last night?” You nod, and she sighs very slightly in response. “Well, I’m sorry that your first official job had to be such a turbulent one. I assure that I had no inkling of what was coming there. None of us did.”

“It’s fine.” You answer, shrugging. It was a nasty shock, but you got out alright. “Did you find Remy’s note?”

She perks up.

“Yes, I did!” She glances over at Laura, her eyes narrowing. “Before that, though, who’s your friend?”

“I could!” Chirps the younger girl, a big, dopey smile on her face.

“Would that be alright with you, miss…?”

Laura blinks, and you practically feel the artifice form in her brain, cogs whirring and hammers falling.

“Williams.” She replies. “Laura Williams.” Her eyes turn to you for a second, before snapping back. “That is fine.”

Molly drags (yes, drags) her out of the room, leaving you and the Blonde Phantom alone. You feel a little embarrassed, for some reason. When you think about it, Laura could probably be more useful to the Agency than you. She’s certainly a lot better at keeping secrets than you are.

“Sorry about that.” Says the Phantom, seeming genuine. “I can’t say I advise bringing all too many people here in future. What we do is not entirely safe, after all.”

You smirk just very slightly. You can’t help it. She has no idea how totally hilarious what she just said is.

“Anyway…” She lifts the envelope up, waving it back and forth, almost like bait. “I suppose you want to get paid.”

Detective agency's usually require a lot of stealth. Lucas doesn't really stealth.

Now that you think about it, you kinda just went ahead with that without asking her, didn’t you?

Kicking yourself inwardly, you lean out into the stairwell, and call Laura’s name.

She comes plodding down the stairs a few seconds later, Molly trailing behind her. A long strand of hair on one side of her head has been tied into an awkward pigtail. She stares in your direction, her eyes asking in silence.

“Hey. I was just talking to Ms. Phantom about maybe getting you a job.”

She cocks her head to one side.

“Is this job better than my current one?” She asks, in a flat, unadorned tone.

Oh. Right.

“Well…” How do you answer that? “…It would pay better.”

“I see.” She says, thinking for a moment. “That is better.”

She pronounces that last bit almost like a question.

“Laura.” The Phantom cuts in, moving to stand in the doorway. You shuffle back almost automatically. “I asked John what skills you have. He said that it would be best to ask you.”

Laura glances at you, before turning back to the Phantom.

“I have been trained in one-hundred-and-twenty-seven styles of combat, as well as covert operating procedure, first aid, enhanced interrogation,”– You notice the Phantom frown a little at that –“advanced acrobatics, espionage….” etc etc etc it goes on for some time.

By the end, the Blonde Phantom can only be described as looking decidedly worried.

There is a long, awkward silence.

“Jonathan…?”

You nod. “Yeah?”

“May I speak to you for a moment? In private?”
