Hello /tg/
Soon I'm going to play a male Ratfolk Hedge Witch in Pathfinder and I need pictures for my character. Please No Skaven, they are ugly and smell bad.
Also Rat people general I guess.

Goit this by googling burmecian, a race of rat people that first appeared in Final Fantasty 9. It is so hard to find pics of rat people that aren't fucking hideous. why does every artist make rat anythings so ugly? They're just bigger mice with a slightly pointier snout, and unlike mice they don't make shit pets.

>>
>>36599654
Rats don't really smell at all. A rat person would smell even less since they presumably would have discovered bathing or learned about it from some other intelligent race. Seeing as they're covered in hair I imagine shampoo would be a big industry in rat person society.

>Hedge Witch

Why would you do that? You either play a base Witch or you play a Scarred Witch Doctor. I guess you could play a White-haired Witch if you have an actual Witch in the party and want to be a grappley-toucher or Midna.

Also see if you can drop Swarming for something like Scamper or something because that 20ft movement will effect you more as a Witch since your job involves a little more tactical positioning movement for being in hex/cackle range of multiple things. Also take Scent over Tinkering or whatever. Scent is godly.

>>
>>36600899

>>
>>36600816
Then you make an Orc or you play a base Witch because Hedge Witch gives you fuck all for giving up two Hexes that could be better spent. Especially when one of those hexes is your 4th level hex or "The hex that allows you to have picked up Evil Eye, Misfortune, Fortune, and Cackle at this level."

>but you can convert spells to healing spells
Or you could spend the hexes you give up on the FREE HEALING hex that doesn't cost spell uses. Or take the Healing patron if you're the parties main healer otherwise you already have Cure spells so you invest in a fucking wand like a non-fuckboy.

Rats are really unpopular with furries; lack the cool factor of dragons and wolves, or the familiarity of cats and dogs, and people think mice are cuter for some insane reason. I mean, other animals are usually associated with like strength or cunning or loyalty or something, but rats are associated with cowardice and filth, so they're unpopular.

Which is a real shame. Rats are rad.

>>
>>36602141

I like em because of the surprising number of tricks they learn, and the fact that they're more intelligent and tenacious than they let on. Plus they're really affectionate; for example, when you work with rats in research you gotta handle them a bit and they'll start to like you. Mice on the other hand are huge assholes and will never like you.

Plus they seem like a real underdog kinda creature you know.

Also, contrary to what cartoons featuring them would have you believe, rats have an overwhelming tendency to display altruistic behaviors.
>>
>>36600791
Hedge Witch is okay as an archetype, useful for low level healing.
>>
>>36602141

Rats are rad because of the sheer insane versatility. See, the thing about rats is that they're very much a general-purpose animal. If something offers shelter and food, rats can live in there. And they're good at making that shelter. They have no special needs, they're small enough to stay out of the way of bigger things but not the smallest things around. They're generally pretty smart and can react to changing environments or new threats. Put simply, they're very adaptable.

Further specialization would actually hinder the rats as a whole. Their biggest strength is that well-rounded generalist capability to adapt and thrive.

Real Life: Rats are kind and loving and paragons of community. Mice are straight up antisocial Niggers who will burn down your shit and when you ask them why they'll shoot you and steal your wallet.

Source: I used to own Mice and I don't anymore because one of them murdered and ate the rest of them before piling his dry food that he stopped eating into his water bowl to make the water deep enough so that he could drown himself in it.

>>
>>36602381

Funny fact: rats in the wild actually choose the alpha male for their pack. The leading male is often not the largest or the strongest, and doesn't get there by sheer strength. Instead, other males will allow one of them to be the leader, with the express understanding that they're allowed access to a few females themselves. The alpha male knows that the other rats could kill it if they wanted to, and it knows that it has a good thing going because everyone lets it have that. So it allows the others to have some of that good thing as well, and everyone's happy.

30 movement puts you on par with a Goblin and Swarming costs more Racial Points than Movement even though Swarming will never get used unless a few other people in your party are also Ratfolk which is unlikely in a non-Ratfolk heavy game. Also because the advanced races and other books added alternate racials that you could swap out, even though some of them are things like Scent which renders Rogue enemies and monsters who's whole thing is that they're Invisible completely useless.

>you can have +2 intimidate or what amounts to AoE automatic blindsense
>>
>>36602985
Scent doesnt work like that. It only allows them to sense that someone is within range but not their position. If they are 5 feet away, you can locate their exact position.
>>
>>36603059
>It only allows them to sense that someone is within range but not their position

Automatically, so they're no longer stealthed/invisible because you are now aware of them and can do something about it, like cast glitterdust and light them up like a fucking christmas tree, deny them their Surprise round/sneak attack and ruin an ambush.

It's basically a Psychic Power called "Fuck Sneaky Bitches" that you get as a baseline racial from level one that you traded +2 to a skill for.
>>
>>36602381
Working at a pet store, I've had the worst experiences with hamsters actually. One morning I found that one of the bastards had killed and eaten the brain of another hamster. Upon seeing this, my boss just pointed out, "Huh, he ate the brain through the eyesocket. They usually go through the jaw." That right, 'usually'. That means it happens frequently enough for there to be statistical averages on how they do it.

Dwarf hamsters are much better, but are almost as shy as mice.

Rats were always a delight to handle and care for.
>>
>>36602420

>>
>>36603251
No it tells you that they are somewhere within 30 feet(if there is no wind).

And apparently everyone has the glitterdust spell.

And its a racial power that only a very few select races get. Apparently allowing certain races the ability to smell better is now on par with shutting down entire classes and strategies, even with the many ways of stopping the scent ability.

You have vastly overestimated its stopping power.

If you have the option you should take it since it's a free Roguefinder.

>You have vastly overestimated its stopping power.
More stopping power than +2 to a skill you're not using.

>Apparently allowing certain races the ability to smell better is now on par with shutting down entire classes and strategies, even with the many ways of stopping the scent ability.
It's basically a free roll to detect hidden targets if you failed to spot them, it's generally a better option that whatever you're giving up to get it on the races that can get it. Ratfolk give up +2 CRAFT, Perception, and UMD. As a Witch it gives you a fallback for if your Cleric/Druid/WISclass fails his Perception against an enemy Sneaker.

I came up with an idea that Ratfolk live in three different types of society, Warrens, Colonies, and Caravans. Warrens are considered by many of their kind the most "proper" Ratfolk society, they're scummy little forest or marsh villages where they live in their own squalor, scavenging and stealing from anywhere nearby.

Colonies are set up within the confines of towns and cities created by other races, such as Humans and Dwarves. They move into slums and sewers and set up their own crummy little societies there to sponge off of the original inhabitants, committing crimes and what not. Another variation of this has them forming colonies in abandoned settlements, especially old Dwarf fortresses.

Caravans are mobile Ratfolk societies, traveling between towns and villages, trading as they go. They are constantly on the move, as the things they are offering to sell to one village are often possessions of people in the last village they passed through.

Whatever form it takes, a Ratfolk society is ruled over by a Rat King. Not actually a singular beast, a Rat King is a council of Ratfolk from within the settlement, including their strongest warrior, best thief, and several magic users, at least one of which is a leader of their clergy. The Rat King makes decisions for the betterment of the Warren, Colony, or Caravan, and (allegedly) puts the needs of others above themselves. Ratfolk religion is a simple thing, filled with simple rituals and offerings to criminal deities and natural spirits.

Crime is an important part of Ratfolk society, as they see anything they can pilfer from non-rats as fair game.
>>
Personally, for ratfolk style gameplay, I prefer the whole Fallen London Lore in regards to the whole Rattus Faber, which are basically a group of corporate/unionized rats which effectively produce some impressive machinery, being able to interact with stuff on a finer level really does help.

The Rattus Faber in fallen london really do split into several groups, the smiths who produce and sell extremely useful machinery and weaponry, arguably some of the finest out there. The Bandits which have a sort've manifest destiny, that they have divine right to go into peoples homes and claim the walls as there own (you can tell this kind of infestation by the faint sounds of mining and explosives emanating from the walls at night.) Finally, you have the fighters, whom tend to utilize one of several kinds of tactics, some prefer stealth and ambush, attempting to poison there targets at night. Others prefer honorable combat, where they utilize the fact that they are far smaller and usually have superior weaponry to draw enemies into unfavorable situations, up to and including sudden blindings. Alternatively, they will often utilize a mix of both, by drawing angered individuals into a crowd of well armed rats.

Dogs, cats, lizards, cattle, in fact pretty much any domesticated animal. Plus many which arent domesticated. In a universe with rat people, they would be entirely natural and there wouldnt be any reason for animals to not be around them unless the DM specifically wants there to be a reason.
>>
>>36603848
As opposed to humans? We have a similar diet, so most domesticated animals would view us the same. It's not that horses naturally want to be ridden by large meat eating apes; we just train them to deal with it. It would be the same with ratfolk.

Cats and rats aren't "natural enemies" by any special means. Cats are just the "natural enemies" of anything small. Birds, mice, rats, rabbits, turtles, lizards, insects, spiders; if a cat can kill it, it will.

Cats don't even hunt actual rats very often. Rats can get pretty big, and can usually fuck a cat up. The cat will usually win in the end, but not without a significant risk of injury.

And before someone mentions their neighborhood crazy bastard cat that would chase dogs down the street, and take down coyotes; please keep in mind that crazy exceptions exist for all species. There's also jack russel terriers that will bring home rattlesnakes, and rats the size of bulldogs.

So ratfolk are basically the humans in these settings?

I'm not even kidding. Everything I read about real world rats tends to make me think that the little bastards have a lot in common with us.

It'd be neat if the parallel extended to fantasy. There'd probably also be a general animosity between ratfolk and humans, which all the other races thought was odd (but fortunate) given how fundamentally similar the two species were.

The two can start as just fuck buddies. They are kinda alike, doesnt mind different species, dont need to pay for whores at a tavern, she doesnt got the risk of getting pregnant, the human guy and the ratlady fuck sometimes, dventurers, lack of a common moral barrier, friendship.
Then in the end they simply can't get away from each other and without knowing it become their adventure party couple. They don't go around being cute, just laugh at each other like two drinking buddies and give here and there some more special care, and live happe ever after unitl the end of their days.

Humans are highly social generalists, rats are highly social generalists. Ratfolk would act very much like we would and as races we would probably get along pretty well. You're probably under the impression that anything that acts like us is "acting human", when its that language using, highly social, tool using species will generally act the same way.

>This hamster hat red orbs for eyes, and instead of buckteeth he had straight up fangs.
>we got him at the pet store and took him home.
>My mom started handling him, and he then bit her on the hand.
>Mom, in return, thumped him on the head. he spazzed a bit,
>slowling went to bite it again.
>*thump*
>never bit anyone again

>he was nocturnal and preffered it when the room was dark and shaded.
>tended to piss and crap in his hamster ball
>we fed him a diet of raw ground beef, mealworms, carrots, and yogurt-covered berries.
>he would take time to drink the blood from the meat.
>We occasionally fed him from hand and would let him crawl over us while sitting on the couch.
>Dog never bothered the hamster since he didn't want to get pissed on.
>Dog preferred to kill squirrels and groundhogs anyway.
>passed away five years later, we put him in a small box and burried him in our backyard not to a large tree.

>I still to this day think of him whenever I read Vampire stories or see hamtaro.

Humans are unique in the fact that we have permanent breasts. Most mammals, including other apes, only develop them while breastfeeding and lose them afterwards.
>>
>>36605076
But other sentint species could have permanent breasts too.
>>
>>36604671
If we're talking about the real world, then the rat loses. Even the largest rodent is only the size of a normal pig, and they're not aggressive.
The largest mastiff doesn't hold a chance against a tiger.
>>
>>36605138
Sapience is not linked to permanent breasts... Or is it? You might be on to something here Anon.
>>
>>36605138
Or only develop breasts after the first pregnancy, then keep them, or any number of other variations.
Most of which have little to no impact on games.

I do think kenku shouldn't have breasts, though. Partially because beaks + nipples is a bad combination, and partially because the ability to swallow things, store them in a crop, and vomit them up later is so insanely useful for a race of thieves.
At the same time, there's no classy way to include "Racial ability to vomit on command" in a statblock.
>>
>>36605182
Permanent breasts actually was the primary causal agent for the evolution of human sapience. Once women developed permanent breasts, men couldn't stop thinking about them, giving the evolutionary advantage to men with the intellect to think about both boobs as well as their survival needs. In response to men constantly thinking about boobs, women evolved the intelligence to keep men away from boobs and to exploit men's access to boobs. In response to that, men thought even more about boobs and how to acquire them, and the whole thing snowballed into a never ending intelligence arms race.
>>
>>36605182
Well, they are a bit like us. The permanent breast thing we have is a bit linked with us liking them like that. Ratpeople until now seem to be really like us, so I can see them going the same way and evolve to have the breasts always developed. Could be a different number of them and on other styles tho.

Living and advancing while at the same time barely managing to fend of the savage Elven hoards that infest every inch of the outside world and the planets forests. The only safe methods of travel are the deep roads filled with tiny feral half-men who feed on the blood of the enlightened races. Forced to travel out away from the warm glow of the everburning lanterns that light the darkened roads beneath the earth to harvest the wood of Stonewood Trees that only grow in the shadowed depths of the earth under the light of glowing Mushrooms tended by Myconids who are the ancient allies of the Goblins from a time now forgotten. The Mushroom-men whisper rumors of non-savage Elves living somewhere deep in the vaults miles below the deep roads but everyone knows there are no such thing as civilized friendly elves.

I liked it from the start.
It just tells so much about the setting with a single tableau.

At the focal point, the paragons of each people stand opposed. Though the rats are clearly larger and more heavily armed and armored, the mouse champion is clearly the most aggressive, his mouth turned in an animalistic snarl.

The rat opposing him is a scarred leader who surrounds himself with brave young lads, indicating either a childish heart or an expression of grief for his lost children.

Closer to the homefront, the mice have produced several visually distinct heros. From left to right:
Flit the Blade is ready to strike, but is she friend or foe?
Sable the Glassarrow stands ready, but clearly wants nothing to do with the conflict.
Ol' Rusty has climbed out of the bottle for one last brawl.
Blackpowder Bill is weighing his chance of surviving the day.
Sam will stand between death and his loved ones come hell or high water.

The footsoldiers of the rats, however, seek no glory. They're in this conflict because their heads of state have ordered them to march. Though not all are old enough to have a sweetheart back home waiting for them, their shields will crack before they let civilians come to harm.

At the top third of the tableaux, the military leaders direct their troops forward.

Calabash the Red is well-groomed, charismatic, and confident, and his rats will not falter with him at their side.

Marcus the Evenhanded is getting on in years, but his razor sharp cunning for politics has kept him as the prime speaker in the republic house against even the strongest attempts to dislodge him.

Oh, and the mice have air support. What the fuck is that shit.

I wouldn't call it common knowledge. The only people that would really know that are people who work in the pet sections of pet stores, and people that recently tried to buy multiple hamsters.

Neat idea, Anon. Maybe some gentle giant Capybara people. Mostly because Capybaras are shill as fuck, but also because there are precious few large races that aren't assholes.

You might be looking a bit too far into resource wars. If that were the case than all the other races would be similarly warring. Humans, halflings, gnomes, goblins, kobolds, ratfolk would all be warring over decent plots of plains and hills.

Elves are fine enough, since they'd either be focusing more on forests, or older than the other races and already well entrenched in their chosen areas. Dwarves are similar, except replace forests with mountains.

Then you get to an odd strata of various races doing just slightly better than the competitors in their chosen area. Gnomes on the high hills and low mountains. Humans on the plains and low hills. Halflings and Ratfolk on the plains and shallow tunnels. Goblins and Kobolds in the deep tunnels and caves.

Physiologically, there's nothing differentiating the ratfolk and halflings enough to avoid what you'd be describing. They have similar diets, habitats, lifespans, and most likely gestation periods.

I think Gammaworld had an option to play as a swarm of rats.
>>
>>36618775
You basically just described humans and goblins in a lot of settings. You could probably reskin all of D&D into a furry Redwall-esque adventure for you and your group. Sounds like it'd be fun.
>>

depends on the culture.

Some peoples believe rats to be clever.

Europeans had the whole black plague setting them back culturally for a long time, so it's somewhat understandable that they associate rates with disease and filth, but at that time the civilizations weren't very sanitary to begin with.

emptying chamber pots out the windows into the gutter and all.
>>
>>36619522
The black plaque was worse because of peoples superstition against black cats. People would kill or drive off the cats and that allowed the rat population to spread easier. Houses that had a cat were less likely to suffer from the plague.

Rats are one of the species of animals that will also mate for pleasure, like humans, and have rather high libidos.

In Rome, due to having at least 3 subterrean rivers AND the fucking Tiber, we have a serious rat problem.
Like, they probably could hunt cats

If I ever make the big step and decide that there will not be humans in my setting, the most numerous race is going to be ratfolk.

Don't rats have uncontrollable bladders and just piss anytime they have to?

No. They just do a fuckton of scent marking via urine. As a humanoid with language, they wouldn't need to do that anymore and would probably find it weird.
>>
>>36620514
I imagine there would still be some kind of scent marking. They wouldn't have their homes labeled with numbers or name, since they could just smell whose house was whose.
>>
>>36620535
They wouldnt do that. Seriously. Once an animal has language, why would they continue using nonlanguage based means of communication? What if they are meeting a stranger? What if they are going somewhere new? What if someone who isnt a ratfolk is visiting? They are going to need directions and labels, just like we do. Scent marking is a means of communication for an animal that is very small and lacks language. Ratfolk are just as smart as we are, have the same eye sight, and use words just like us.

Why do so many people try to keep some form of animalistic behavior for humanoid animal people? The change to humanoid brings with it a massive change to behavior and how they go about living their lives.
>>
>>36620637
Then you run into the problem of why not just have them be humans if they're going to act exactly like humans? People want nonhumans to feel not human.
>>
>>36620637
Note that human settlement stank horribly before we came up with the advanced sewer system we have today. And most cities still do.
>>
>>36620675
The problem with that is that they would still be nonhuman. What people think of as acting human is just how a tool using highly social species with language acts. Once you have language and are humanoid, culture becomes your defining trait, not your animalness. We are apes, do you see us still acting like chimps? Keeping an animalistic behavior is just lazy roleplaying do to a lack of imagination and built from ignorance about culture and biology.

In addition, they are still not human. You still have to take into account how they go about life with fur, a tail, a better sense of smell, and all the things that result from being ratfolk.

I swear, furries/otherkin are probably better act roleplaying nonhumans than you guys.
>>
>>36620792
>do you see us still acting like chimps?
That's too easy a set up for a joke, so I'm skipping that.
The differences from humans is what would make them interesting. For instance, mice/rat's front teeth are constantly growing. They have gnaw on things to wear them down. If they don't the teeth can grow into their skulls and pierce their brains. Rats can gnaw through even steel if they keep at. That heightened sense of smell and hearing would cause them to go about things differently. Buildings would need to be made differently for acoustics that didn't bother them. Perfume would most likely not be a thing for them, since it would cover their natural scents. Scents would play a larger part for them since they could tell where and who you were with. That person was with those people, that person had sex that person, those two are mates, etc.

Sure, if you wanted the entire town to know where you've been and what you've been doing. I'd say perfumes become obsessively common to maintain a little privacy.

Only if their society cares about such things.

The teeth thing is a good example of a basic bit of biology that would strongly influence their culture They would probably have some form of dentistry that deals with their teeth, along with proverbs or sayings that go along with it. Im not saying that all of their behavior would be exactly human, but that animalistic traits would be far more subtle than is commonly expressed.

The answer to the chimp question, is that yes we do, but in subtle ways that arent obvious to people. That person who explodes in violence when they are contradicted - thats a chimp out. When that frat boy does a bunch of posturing in front of his friends by trying to show how tough and virile he is - thats chimp behavior. But its expressed in a very different way from how chimps do it, with language.

For ratfolk, their behaviors would be influenced by their rat ancestry. Rats are intensely altruistic, group sharing, democratic. Cultures of ratfolk would be very egalitarian, generally based on consensus, talking things out before resorting to violence, and they would be very family oriented.. May have a strong attraction to shiny things.

As people they would still like privacy so >>36621103 is probably correct.

>hamsters eat each others brain
As a former hamster owner I can confirm this. on the other no other pet shown as much inteligence when they tried to escape as hamsters did. They usually wedged up their treadwheel and used it as ladder. And once they boilt a stairway from the paperboxes we gave them as toys.
Now we have a dwrf rabbit. it's cute as fuck but damn is it stupid as hell.

Tenpence for the barber to trim your fur (above the waist only, this is a decent place), another five for his apprentice to file down your teeth.

>Had a hamster
>It's cage was a fishtank with a screened lid and a fucking brick on the lid to keep it firmly pinned
>It locked the treadmill with woodchips and climbed on top
>Used a piece of cloth we gave it as a blanket to build a bridge between the treadmill and the top of the waterbottle
>Had apparently used a particularly long woodchip as a lever to pry open the lid from the inside
>Stacked food pellets to hold the top open long enough to slip out
It was baffling such a small animal could come up with such a complex escape plan. Then it went and killed itself immediately when it tried eating through a table lamp's electric line.
