Stage 49: If it walks like a duck, it talks like a duck, and acts like a duck, it is probably a tanuki youkai.

The most alarming thing about Rie is that she's not very alarming at all. When she does her magic, it's without muss or fuss; when she appears, she's there as if she always had been; and when she tells you that your apartment complex is going to be gas-bombed and raided, it's in the most forthright and simplest terms possible.

Dealing with a nekomata, in your admittedly very short experience, is a lot like defusing a bomb or completing a ritual. You can't afford to panic, because all you do is get sloppy and blown up, and you can't be off point for one second or you get cursed. The first thought in your head is that attempting to gas-bomb a place where one of every element carrying dragonette exists is a ridiculous idea, and whomever gave them this plan of attack was an idiot. The second thought is that if you've learned anything about Rie it's that she has no concept of the human understanding. So while what she says is absolutely correct, you have no doubt, what it actually means could be something entirely different. Making assumptions when dealing with nekomata can get you turned into a little girl.

Which, while kinky, is probably not suitable for the future deity of destruction. And being younger than your kids could definitely be a downside despite what that Tenchi series claims.

There is also the very real possibility that they aren't here for you and yours at all. Unlikely, but true – this is a place where many creatures who like their privacy live, and not all of them are supernatural beings. It could be something as simple as a wanted criminal being discovered. Unlikely, but possible. That would make it entirely possible for the enemy to sneak in with the rest of the police as well of course, but that's your utterly justified paranoia speaking.

[] Talk to Rie-sama and see exactly what she overheard/saw.
[] Call the Landlord and see what she has to say about this.
[] Go and calm your family down and then decide on a plan of action.
[] Thank Rie-sama politely and tell your family to remain here and quiet while you scout.
[] Have Yui-chan go cloud riding and take a look while you get things ready here.

[+] Thank you Rie....wait, does that mean she counts as your family's guardian spirit?!

“Thank you kindly, Rie-sama. I'll make sure there is extra takoyaki tomorrow as well. Sorry about skipping a day.” She shrugs and hops onto the windowsill before you can say anything else. You probably could have still said something, if the window sill she had jumped to wasn't the window sill on the OUTSIDE of the window. As a cat no less. Then she leaps off into open space, going who-knows-where to do who-knows-what to who-knows-whom.

Freaky cat.

Cute though. But that's not important right now! You step outside into the living room where your family is getting girded up for wartime activities. Well, those that have the penchant for violence and destruction, which is everyone except Jinyuu-onee-sama. Even Kiki-hime has her bow and some arrows, and is dressed for archery.

“Before everyone panics, take a deep breath. Remember, this is a youkai that gave us the warning, and they don't see things like we do.” That doesn't really ease the tension too much, but you persist. “We're not the only occupants in the building, and I doubt they'd just use gas if they had even the slightest inkling of knowledge about us.”

Akari speaks up. “Aniki is right. What would you like us to do, aniki?” Everyone is looking at you and they seem slightly calmer in general, though Shoko looks like she's ready to punch something and Kiki-hime looks very nervous still. Yuuhi is sitting next to the front door, sheathed sword upright and looking very relaxed, reminding you of how dangerous Akari-niji-chan is when she's relaxed.

“Well, first of all I'm going to call the landlady and ask him what's going on. Akari-niji-chan, keep an eye on them. Er Yin-sensei, Yui-niji-chan, you're on hime-duty.” Yui walks over and kneels next to Kiki-hime, smiling up at her. Kiku-chan murmurs to her lover that she'll be assisting Akari most likely, and that it will be all right, which earns her an indulgent smile from Er Yin as the Chinese scholar takes her place at Kiki-hime's back, one hand gently resting on her shoulder. Not entirely because she's blind, either, you suspect.

You are answered by the polite, contralto voice of one of the strange slime monsters the landlord uses as maintenance workers and secretaries, but it is a recording. “due to the high volume of calls at this time, we are experiencing a momentary delay in answering. Your call IS important to us, and someone will be with you as soon as possible, thank you~~~” which instantly switches over to some classical flute music. Well, you suppose it's classical, it's definitely not classical Japanese flute music.

Kiku-chan walks over to Akari, and they gesture quickly and efficiently to one another. Yui is watching, and you can see her trying to make out the signs she knows. You get most of it; it's actually the police with some of the Japanese security forces to back them up, and they're deploying outside the apartment complex currently. Akari hasn't spotted any of the enemy yet, that she can tell.

The phone picks up and that low, strange voice rumbles through the speaker. “Hhhnnnnggg?”

“Sorry to disturb you, Ooya-sama, but I was wondering what the exact security measures in place were. I think that it may not be catching certain spirits.”
>>
>>36525125
“Hhhmmmnnngg.”

“Oh, I understand now. Thank you for that. Also, what is the pet policy where youkai are concerned? I might be adopting one and I'd rather not surprise you with it.”

“Hhhmmmnngg?”

“Oh, a nekomata, actually. I've been feeding her on occasion already, but I may as well make it official....if you don't mind, Ooya-sama.”

“Hnn.”

“Ah, thank you that will be fine. I am certain she's housebroken, but I'll put out a notice to the mice just in case.”

“Hnnnmmmgg. Hnnnnhhmnng.”

“Really, is that so? Well, I'll let my family know. It won't be a problem for us, will it?”

“Hhhmnnggghhhh.”

“Oh. I see, thank you, Ooya-sama. I am sorry that they're causing you trouble. If you need assistiance, I know a few people....”

“Hhhnnnggh.”

“Well, just doing my part as a resident. Have a nice day, and thank you again.”

“Hhnnnnnnnnngggggghhhhhhh.”

The landlady hands up and you sigh, wishing that you could do all of your business with him over the phone, really. You turn to your family. “All right. It seems that there is a serial killer in one of the apartments on a level lower than ours. He's been officially identified and they're planning to take him in, but he's one of those kinds that is probably possessed, so they have the J.D.F. on duty. The landlady is cooperating, and trying to make things as easy as possible on the rest of us, but there's a chance that someone might try to take advantage.” You don't bother with the part about being allowed to adopt Rie-sama as part of the household, they can assume you're talking about Yuuhi-chan for now. “Oh, also, he can't prevent pure spirits from entering the complex because of what she is. Pure spirits like youkai and oni are on us.” Which would have been nice to know ahead of time, but the landlord isn't exactly perceptive in the way you are.
>>
>>36525147
Jinyuu-onee-sama looks worried, but she's the only one, really. Kiki-hime is more concerned with an actual fight, so she's relaxed some, and Er Yin-sensei giving her a shoulder massage is probably helping. Akari has slipped away; she'll either be back momentarily or call you; she's most likely checking other sports around the building to see what they're doing.

All eyes are on you once more, and you consider carefully, though with much less worry.

Actually, we don't quite know Shoko's abilities, but the fact that she could take out a Kami if she goes all out shows she's strong. Yuuhi was strong enough to survive the purge and live, and has spent most of this time training, along with having the element of surprise (She's a little girl, what could she possibly do?).

It doesn't take you long to come up with a workable scouting plan that doesn't put anyone in danger. “Yui-niji-chan, when you are cloud riding, you're invisible to humans, right?”

“Yes aniki, but not to spirit children, Void users, or sorcerers and priests. They can always see cloud-riders, even if they're fully spirits.” Yui's answer is almost professional, aside from her slight fidgeting in place and her eagerness to be of help to you. It also explains mystics seeing gods descend on clouds all the time in their visions.

You nod and give her a smile. “Good. When Akari comes back to report, coordinate with her and then you take Kiku-chan and scout the area, inside and out. The main things you are looking for are holy people who aren't Shinto, military that isn't Japanese, and any oni trying to sneak into the complex. And anything else weird, just for good measure.” Taking something else into consideration, you add on, “And if anyone notices you that doesn't fall into the above categories, make a note of it and if they're human, see if you can find out anything about them.”

Their youthful voice merge as one as they answer simultaneously, “Yes, aniki.”
>>
>>36525748
“As for the rest of us, we're staying put for now. If it takes too long, Yuuhi-chan and I will leave and run our errands, and be back soon enough.” You look around at the nervous ones, and the ones anxious to start a fight. “Everything is fine, for now, you may as well all relax. The hard part is waiting for things to happen.” That seems to help Kiki-hime and Jinyuu-onee-sama to relax some, and Er yin-sensei asks Kiki-hime if she will make tea. Yui-niji-chan and Kiku-chan walk over to you, and you sit on the couch, trying to project a sense of calm to Shoko, who is cracking her knuckles repeatedly and fidgeting almost as badly as Yui was.

It is Kiku-chan who speaks up. “Aniki, what would you like us to do if we spot suspicious people?” She's not asking as a spiritualist – she's asking as a member of Clan Ryo. Yui-niji-chan looks nervous, but determined. Akari is walking out of the bedroom hallway, eliciting strange looks from the people who don't know her well since the didn't go in that way. She seems calm enough, even to you; you suspect that she hasn't spotted anything too unusual. Though, that doesn't always mean much, and seeing through stone doesn't include seeing through mundane or magical disguise.

[] I leave it to you, Kiku-chan. I have faith in you.

[+] You both know very well what I would do, but bear in mind how dangerously stupid I am about such things. No, wait, that's not....well, yes, that is what I meant, never mind.

You motion Akari-niji-chan over, and she as usual does not acknowledge. She does stop by Shoko-san and speak to her quietly, something about assisting her with something later, and Shoko seems not only surprised by relieved. It definitely takes the edge of her agitation away. Akari settles on the couch next to you. And speaks softly to the three of you.

“The police have set up a perimeter and have snipers arranged in the direction of room 306, two floors below and on the side of the building around the corner. The main entry seems to be the duty of the defense forces. They have riot gear and various subdual equipment. I looked in on the target, he's definitely possessed, but it's a minor one, from what I can tell.” Akari pauses to collect her thoughts and then continues more slowly.

“The biggest problem that I can see before us is that there are a large number of news crews and street side people who are looking in on the arrangements. Whatever defenses that are used to hide this place are minimal, and the crowds are large enough that it would be very easy to have spies and people to watch us in them.” She draws on her hand, making the kanji for Clan Ryo. “I would bet that there are a few spies, but no one we should be immediately concerned with. With Jinyuu-onee-sama and Er Yin-sensei's magic to confuse the tree spell, we should be fine.” she adds the symbols for Three, Water, and Dragon.

Yui-niji-chan looks up at you. “That would be a small problem, aniki, but I can manage, especially with Kiku-chan with me.”
>>
>>36526733
“Oni-chan-no-kirei is right, aniki-dragon. It would be a definite benefit to be sure of them.” She makes a two handed shape that is the Clan Ryo symbol of 'example by death' to you, and Akari nods ever so slightly. You're still kind of bemused by her calling Yui pretty., and Yui is blushing and staring at Kiku-chan as if she's gone mad.

“Well, you know how I deal with such matters, but I'm not known for dealing with them the best.” Yui-niji-chan giggles and Kiku-chan frowns mightily, which isn't very effective on her delicate face. “I have the utmost faith in you both, my darling niji-chan....” You give them a quick, to the point silent instruction, even as they bow their heads, Yui grinning happily at the compliment.

The adjective is first if it's directly modifying the following noun.

If you're saying "Pretty Oni", then it's "Kirei na Oni".
"An Oni that is pretty" is also "kirei na oni".
But only if you're saying "that oni is pretty" or "oni are pretty" does it become "oni wa kirei".

[X] Troublesome Void dragonette triplets. Look first, decide second.

You make quick, precise gestures – they can look first and then decide what happens next on their own. “If you need assistance or find something worthwhile, either of you could probably inform Er Yin-sensei, who can then inform me.” As a Void oni-child, you have no doubt Yui could contact Er Yin-sensei through the Void, and of course her precious treasure would easily be able to.

They both bow quickly and quickly make their way to the sliding glass door that leads to the porch. You flop back into the couch and sigh heavily. It's weird to delegate, but at the same time, it feels....you're not sure what it feels like. Right isn't quite the word for it, but comfortable, or familiar, yes. Akari is looking at you strangely, as you rub your left palm with your right thumb, feeling the glassy material as it is subsumed by flesh, half sapphire, half olive skin.

Kiki-hime walks over and gives you each a cup of the strong green tea made with the sweetened syrup. She looks worried and glances at now shut sliding glass door. “Are you certain they'll be all right, Ryu-chan?”

[] “They''ll be just fine.” Dismiss!
[] “Kiku-chan has more experience at this than anyone here except maybe Yuuhi-chan.” Explain!

You reach up and run your fingers through her hair slowly, lightly brushing her horn in passing. You gently pull her down, and kiss her softly, reveling in her taste and scent, her warmth. Akari lays two fingers on your wife's arm, giving Kiki-hime something to keep her balance against as her knees go weak. You can feel your heart throbbing in time to hers – or rather, hers, matching time to yours, slowing down, calming. "Trust your family, princess."

“Kiku-chan was part of my clan long before she was a miko, Kiki-hime. She will keep Yui-niji-chan safe and knows exactly what to do. The humans can't see a cloud-rider, and between Void Eyes and Fire Eyes, they'll see everything much better than anyone else here can, even me.” Kiki-hime's only response is a softly agreeable noise, and Akari smiles at you. “Come on, my sister did a reading for us....did you get to see her?” You kiss her cheek lightly as you stand, and you note that everyone save Yuuhi-chan is gathering at the table already.

Your sister looks very serious.

“Yes, though usually I see it with people tossing coins, not counting yarrow stalks,” Kiki replies, slightly giddy from even that light caress. “It takes a lot longer with yarrow.”

“Jinyuu-onee-sama says it is much more accurate though,” claims Akari, and you nod.

“I got her to do it when I was using Water Eyes – it's much more random with the stalks, but the coins are a lot faster....” You stand across the table from your sister, though you sit both Akari and your wife down. Er Yin and Shoko also sit down, as your sister pulls out some black and red tiles, arranging them to show you what she has seen....

Hexagram Twenty-four

Fu / Return

Thunder regenerates deep within Earth's womb:
Sage rulers recognized that the end of Earth's seasonal cycle was also the starting point of a new year and a time for dormancy. They closed the passes at the Solstice to enforce a rest from commerce and activity. The ruler himself did not travel.

You have passed this way before but you are not regressing. This is progress, for the cycle now repeats itself, and this time you are aware that it truly is a cycle. The return of old familiars is welcome. You can be as sure of this cycle as you are that seven days bring the start of a new week. Use this dormancy phase to plan which direction you will grow.

SITUATION ANALYSIS:
You are about to experience a rebirth - about to be given another chance, a new lease on life. You have persevered, gone the distance through an entire cycle -- through the Spring of hope or new passion, through a Summer of growth and building, only to be sacrificed like the archetypal Harvest King at the Autumn reaping. You lie dormant like seed beneath Winter snows now, healing and absorbing new energies in preparation for the new young Spring coming shortly to your life.

"Well, that's not fucking ominous at all," mutters Shoko-san.

""It is not," agrees Er Yin-sensei. "It tells us exactly what we are expecting - the return of Horobi after a long absence."

"I think that Shoko-san refers to the changing lines," explains Akari softly.

CHANGING LINES

Jinyuu-onee-sama touches the set of red yin-lines second from the bottom. "The Middle Line Prevails, meaning it is the most powerful of the three." You look at her curiously, and Kiki-hime's hand slips into yours.

>Line One(Bottom): Return after straying off-trail. Good fortune and no blame.

"....you said you went to Yomi, aniki...." points out Akari-niji-chan.

"You don't get more off trail than that," you agree.

>Line Two (Middle): Your return is welcome. Great fortune.

Kiki-hime smiles and squeezes your hand, but you note that your sister is still looking very serious. "I told you you should bring me to meet your father!" You wince, and the looks around the table are a mixture of shock and appalled.

>Line Six (Top): You have missed the opportunity for a triumphant return. You must now wait years before such an opportunity cycles your way again. Grave misfortune.

"....that's vague as fuck," comments Shoko-san.

Er yin smiles faintly. "It is a changing line, which means that it is not as set as the others in the Middle kingdom."

"But that means the others aren't either," points out Akari-niji-chan softly. "We can still make them happen, with much care and work."

"...when did you become a philosopher, Akari-niji-chan?" you ask curiously.

"When I realized Ryukusa makes the world to her desire." You don't have any answer for that.

"And the transformed hexagram, onee-sama?"

Transformed Hexagram Four

Meng / Inexperience

A fresh Spring at the foot of the Mountain:
The Superior Person refines his character by being thorough in every activity. The Sage does not recruit students; the students seek him. He asks nothing but a sincere desire to learn. If the student doubts or challenges his authority, the Sage regretfully cuts his losses.

SITUATION ANALYSIS:
This is a time of interchange between a mentor and pupil. Whether you are the teacher or the student, it is a time of companionship along a mutual path. This hexagram also emphasizes the eternal, cyclical nature of the mentor/student relationship - a mentor is merely a more seasoned pupil, further along on the journey. A pupil holds within himself the seed of a future Master.

You and Shoko-san immediately look at one another and then sidelong over to the silently waiting Yuuhi-chan, who is sitting by the front door, swaying back and forth in place and humming some little nonsense tune to herself, her tail twitchily dancing in the air behind her. Kiki-hime is a little more blatant about her look over at the delicate nogitsune-born girl, and Akari glances at you with a strange, almost curious expression. Er yin-sensei smiles faintly, no doubt applying the reading to her own welter of mystic information and knowledge, while Jinyuu-onee-sama looks at you very seriously, her expression guarded as only a water dragonette can do so.

[] “I think you are all taking this to an extreme.”
[] “Who am I to argue with the universe, onee-sama!”
[] Keep your own council for the moment. That's too freaky.

There are three paths we can take. The most likely is the welcome return, but there are possibilities of straying from the path but having no blame for it. There's also the possibility that Ryukuza could fail.

The middle line is (possibly) the best ending. When in doubt, we should be careful and through, probably shouldn't jump the gun.
>>36528264
Vague, but Ryukuza is not experienced. She will find/has found a teacher. Do not question/doubt this teacher. The teacher is growing in their own way and the student could become a master in their own right.

[X] Stupid fortunetelling thing! Be more clear! Oh, and yeah, we have options here, it's not set in stone.

You are well aware of how much your older sister disapproves of Clan Ryo, and you're equally certain she's positive that the second hexagram means you'll be taking Yuuhi-chan under your wing and teaching her about how Clan Ryo does things. That would be her prejudice speaking. Er Yin-sensei's take on it – that of many potential students and masters – is far more reliable.

“Before we take too much for granted,” you say, holding up your free hand to the table in general, “let me point out that this could refer to any student and master relationship. I'm teaching Kiki-hime how to fight, Er Yin-sensei and Kiku-chan are teaching me about spiritual matters deeper than I am used to, and there might be other situations where I'm as much a student as a teacher.” Of course, the three situations that DO come to your mind are the possibilities of teaching Yuuhi Clan Ryo techniques, teaching Hyun Chisato how to take over the underworld, and teaching yui-niji-chan how to be loved and how to love in safety and warmth.

But the thought of learning strange things from Rie or Yuuhi is also a possibility. “Besides, if anyone wants to teach OR learn from me, it will be what the hexagram says – the student wishing to learn, not the teacher taking it upon herself to teach!”

Er yin stands slowly and places her hands on the table. “Ryukusa-sama is right, we can't make any quick judgments. The superior man will do things thoroughly.” You don't breathe a sigh of relief because your sister and Shoko might notice. Both of them do relax though, which is an actual relief.

The sliding glass door opens then, and a very worried pair of darling girls walk in. Yui-niji-chan and Kiku-chan both look serious, and the fear behind Yui's mask of determination isn't the kind of fear that makes one afraid of something, but means she is afraid for someone else, and the way she won't meet your eyes means it's most likely you.

“We have a problem aniki-dragon,” says Kiku-chan calmly, but firmly. “The triplet Void dragonettes are there, and they're chanting something.”

“It's a summoning, aniki, meant to cause possessed people trouble.” Your heart sinks. “But that's not the worst.” Yui glances down, almost apologetic.

“Anonimous,” you guess, knowing you're right. Kusari Kuro's warning, just before he died with your wakizashi through his half-oni heart. He fought with Clan Ryo training, and now you have a pretty damn good idea of who taught him.

Kiku-chan nods once, grimly. “Three oni-children in white, near them, and they're Clan trained. They couldn't hide from Fire and Void Eyes but that doesn't mean they're not dangerous. I don't know if it's Kaga, Hojo, or Ryo training though.” You are pretty sure it's Ryo, but you could be wrong.

Yeah, right.

Er Yin speaks in a flat, unhappy voice. “Ryukusa-sama, if they finish that spell, that possessed man won't be possessed, he'll become a youkai.” She turns her head towards you, looking at you with sightless eyes. “To interrupt a spell of that type, you'll have to make all three stop chanting. There is no counterspell without him being present in the room.”

[] Take a strike team against the dragonettes and Anonimous.

>>
>>36529295
That's two different locations. Anonimous are guarding the dragonettes, and the dragonettes are outside the military/police perimeter, casting a spell on the possessed human in the apartment.
>>
>>36529350
This. Tell her we caught wind of a rogue cell collaborating with outsiders to endanger our mark or something.
>>
>>36529204
Ok, so first lets be thorough. We can either find a way to counterspell the possession, stop the spell at it's source, and more. We can probably assume that Anonimous is there to provide protection for the Void Dragonettes, and getting into a fight in the real world would be cluster-fuck.

Telling Oba-san could work...and could back-fire. Or could ensure we're screwed later.

A way to deal with Anonimous permanently could be explaining to them just who wants to deal with Kiki/who is funding them.

Thus:

Well, there's a potentially hilarious situation. If Oba-san still doesn't suspect anything, and we inform her (thus taking suspicion off of ourselves as the snitch is often the least suspected party in the equation), then paranoia is going to be going apeshit all over the clan and we'll have the main body of our enemy working to eliminate their own allies without realizing it.

It's beautiful.

Guys, don't tell Oba-san.

She's old, clever, and has more cards up her sleeves than we have in our whole deck. Telling her would most likely not result in anything good for us. We'll also have to leave that place, because she's not dumb enough to not draw the conclusion.

Even then, there's Clanfolk of hers moving around with what is most likely not her permission. That's going to set off an internal purge and paranoia off regardless. Plus, even if she does, it makes us look clueless to her schemes and plots, which is also a valuable weapon.

[X] ….here's a stupid idea: Tell Oba-san.
[X] Take a strike team against the dragonettes and Anonimous.

You kiss Kiki-hime's hand, which is clenched tightly around yours, and she smiles at you uncertainly. You smile back gently extricating your hand from hers, and turn away from your family, considering the situation very carefully with closed eyes and mind working with all the power and speed you can muster.

The triplets are breaking serious rules – not just Clan Ryo rules, but rules made and enforced by the Kami themselves. The world of half spirits isn't meant for humans, and a curse of that level is completely and totally forbidden. The repercussions would be tremendous in the spirit world and the human world alike. The fact that they have Anonimous working for them just makes it that much worse, and you're pretty sure your psychotic Stone dragonette cousin Wakaba is on board with this, just because she needs the triplets.

But there's one other factor in all this, and it's a far more important factor. Kiku-chan is still a priestess, and still responsible for protecting humans from the spiritual corruption, and you're pretty sure turning a possessed person into a youkai ranks right up there with something she's not allowed to let happen, regardless of whether or not she puts herself in danger by dealing with it.

“Akari. Get me an untraceable line to Oba-san.”

To your surprise, dead silence is what meets this outrageous demand. Not even a soft 'baka dragon' from Kiku-chan. You don't turn around just yet, you don't think they're ready to see you like this. Akari is, Kiku might be, but the others....Shoko would probably understand. You suspect Yuuhi might also. Akari slips the phone into your hand, already dialed.

“Yes, my child?” Her voice is soft, grandmotherly, gentle, old, and so kind.
>>
>>36530177
Though, after thinking about it, maybe traping the dragonnettes and letting the others deal with anonimous would be a better move, overall.

“Oba-san, my cousin has made a terrible mistake. They are using a human soul to endanger my principle, and allying themselves with those outside the clan, and teaching them clan techniques.” The silence on the other end of the line is a dark, deep silence filled with rage and shame, and you can feel her power, the deep Yin of her hungers drowning her anger almost as quickly as it erupts.

Her voice is soft, gentle, and supremely understanding. “Well, my daughter, you must do what you must to protect the principle. I would expect you to do nothing less.”

The shout of triumph in your heart and the vindication that Clan Ryo took the first act in this war doesn't color your voice at all. “I understand Oba-san. Your daughter thanks you for all you have done for her.” Just enough, no more; she's note a spirit child, she's a kamuy possessed priestess.

“You will make me proud, I am certain, my daughter.” Her pleased voice makes you want to vomit. The click of the line going dead is utter relief.

You turn to the others, and look at them, scanning across their faces.
Yui: regret, which she shouldn't have.
Kiku: determination, just like you thought.
Er Yin: patience; she knows more than she ever says.
Shoko: disgust, though not towards you.
Jinyuu: fear, for you and yours, and your heart wants to go out to her.
Akari: Eyes closed, placid as ever, duh.
Kiki: worry....but she is proud. She trusts, she knows you will do the right thing.
Yuuhi: Um. Well....she seems to be sleeping, because her head is rolled back all the way and she's snoring a little.

Okay then.

[X] Akari, Shoko, Er Yin, Yuuhi.

You turn towards them, keeping your expression controlled and your voice soft and gentle. “Akari-niji-chan, Er Yin-sensei, you will be with me. Shoko-san, Yuuhi-”

“WAH!” ~Thump~”Hai, Ryukusa-sama!”

Damn, it's hard to suppress a smile. “Yuuhi-san, I would not ordinarily ask this of you, but in this case....I am formally asking for your assistance in defeating a threat to the balance between spirits, spirit-children, and humans.”

“You're fucking right you'll need my help, babe!” Akari smiles at that, and Kiki-hime looks at you and mouths the word 'babe', which you reply to with a shrug.

“Yui-niji-chan, you are going to guard Kiki-hime.” All pain and regret dissolves instantly, transformed into the pure determination of your first servant, and second friend outside of the clan. “If anything goes terribly wrong, you get her away and to me. Kiku-chan, you're here as well; I know that you have your duties, but if they cast the spell successfully....you'll be fulfilling them anyways.” You look at her and she nods solemnly. “Jinyuu-onee-sama, please see if you and Kiku-chan can do something to prevent the problem from getting that far. Please forgive this stupid lizard for placing you in such danger once more.” You bow, but you don't give her time to reply.

“One more thing. Er Yin-sensei, you said that Akari-niji-chan is okay to fight. She's going with me into real danger. You're sure the child is safe?” That is the only problem that you really have with this choice, but against three Ryo-trained oni-children, Akari is one edge you cannot give up – she's used to fighting them.

Er Yin speaks very softly. “Ryukusa-sama, if it can possibly harm the child, it will have to have already killed her mother.” That's actually more reassuring than it sounds – anything less than Akari's death won't hurt the child, and if it kills Akari, well, there wasn't shit anyone could have done anyways.

Kiki-hime practically jumps out of her chair and hugs you tight, whispering into your breast as you hug her back. “Please come back safe, my Ryu-chan.” You whisper the words softly hugging her tight, feeling her warmth and the strength she gives you so freely. “Yes, my wife.” She relaxes and you slip away, and gesture sharply.

No more playing: the first strike was theirs, but you're going to end the fight it before the swing can even be completed.

She didn't, but Ryukusa had to be sure the child would be safe before taking her into a fight with 3 sorceress and 3 oni-children. The one person she would have wanted to surprise actually knew already.

That's going to be the subject of the first post next session.

Thanks XS. Can you explain at some point (the end of next thread if you don't have time now) how the I-cheng readings work? It seems like you take rolls for some randomness (our next challenges), but our decisions generally show what we'll face later.

Actually, it's the opposite.

The rolls are what determines the type of line you get - each line has an associated number based on whether it is yin (, yang, or changing yin or changing yang. Then the fortune is determined by the particular hexagram that is made from those six lines.

The interpretation is almost entirely up to how anon deals with it, just like real life. But it is odd how the fortunes represented what was happening well, isn't it?
