You raise your wine cup to your lips and gulp down a mouthful of the vaguely sweet, spiced wine. It's a deep red, and smells of cloves, honey, and cinnamon. The drink fills you with a pleasing warmth, but fails to drive away that ever present cold. It at least relegates the sensation to your limbs. Even if you don't necessarily find the cold unpleasant, it's almost soothing in fact, you still quite prefer the heat of the wine as it radiates through your gut.

Chryssa seems to have had wholly too much to drink. She's entwined an arm with yours and leans heavily against you, her head rested contentedly against your shoulder. Her eyes are closed and her breathing slow, you think she's probably asleep. Not that the fact she's asleep helps you any; the way she clings to you, you're pretty much stuck here. Still, the way her horn is digging into your side is a tad uncomfortable, even if she is sort of cute with her guard down like this.

You take another swallow of wine and cast your eyes across the room. Fulvia seems to have concluded her conversation with the Varistha, and is making her way towards Skull Kid, who's taking a break from dancing evidently to heap food onto a wooden plate. He seems to favor the naan bread and humus, but nobody could say he's going light on the spit-roasted lamb kebab. Meanwhile, the Varistha is making her way towards you. She doesn't look exactly pleased, she looks more confused than anything.

She comes to a stop in front of you and Chrys and opens her mouth, shutting it before she says anything. She rolls her jaw back and forth, as if chewing on what she wants to say. Rolling it around her mouth. Testing it. Eventually she raises her voice above the din of conversation, laughter, and music. “Did you know your friend plans to restore the Rhynian Empire? She just spent the last half hour interrogating me, she wanted to know where I found my armor.”

She rolls back one of her sleeves to reveal the sleek, form-fitting fabric of a Rhynian Technician's Suit. You've got a number of them in your possession at this very moment, odd that you didn't notice sooner. You suppose the bright glow of the enchanted suit must have simply blended in with the glow of her reserves, or perhaps you just weren't very attentive. It's even more curious that Fulvia did notice. You weren't aware of her being able to see vys.

We should try to be a bit placating. We (at least I think) don't want Fulvia, Profectus and Mortia to create a conquering empire with no morals that reclaims its old territory, continues its fucked experiments and declares war on our people, but we are fine with them trying to reclaim some of their lost past and bring back knowledge that disappeared with the Rhynians. We want to help them up to that point and want them to go no further.

I'm just throwing this out there, but I really do think we should make some effort to teach Zahak how to meditate.

First off, to the people worrying about him getting to strong, I just want to point out that we is a grandmaster now, and we know now how hard that is to reach. He's not going to be reaching GM level any time soon, and meanwhile his being able to do other stuff can go a long way towards keeping him alive.

That brings us to my biggest reason to teach him. In any fight he's going to have the biggest target on his head as a dragon, and at the same time, he can't wear any armor. If we don't at least teach him some metal stuff to toughen him up, he might not live to long with the way we're going. I'd also like to teach him some nature stuff as I think that will be a huge help in teaching him to read books to he can train himself, but metal and survivability comes first IMO.

What's everyone elses opinion on this?
>>
>>36515116
I still think we should acknowledge the fact that a fully reformed Rhynian empire would be bad, but that we don't expect or want them to get that far.
>>
>>36515140
>he might not live to long with the way we're going
.
He is a dragon.
A master of fire.
He can fly.
I don't think you understand how strong he is.
I do want to teach him to meditate. But I don't think you understand how strong he is exactly.
>>
>>36515140
I definitely want to teach him to meditate. Even though he's a strong fire vatis he needs to learn more control and some other magic as well
>>
>>36515140
Didn't we try to teach him the basics during our last interaction? Or was that just language and stuff?

I think we should teach him meditation. Probably metal like you said, since personal buffs would probably be the most intuitive thing for him (after fire). I don't see Zahak picking up water or nature any time soon.
>>
>>36515154

I agree. After all, it's nice to have a goal, no matter how unlikely, but I'm not comfortable with any world spanning power that I'm not in charge of!

Metal + Dragons = airborne bodyslams? Cutting dudes as he fly's past?
>>
Oh yeah Banished Quest! I've been waiting for this all week.
I had an idea of something neat we could try, which kinda hinges on what the maximum range of Beam is. Basically, assuming the range extends with our input of vys, it could potentially have a gigantic range unobstructed, which if we combine it fire manipulation in order to create a magnifying effect out of thin air, we could essentially make what amounts to a beam sniper rifle, which could be a pretty handy thing.
>>
>>36515726
The problem would be the range and how it would be a drain on Mik's reserves, the longer/farther he'd have to power it then add the fire
>>
>>36515726
We also have Chrys with the death mask as a long term option
>>
>>36515188

I don't know how I missed this. I agree he's strong on the offense, but right now I don't see him being able to take nearly as much damage and anyone else in the group, because not only is he smaller then anyone else, but he also has no armor. When you add in the likelihood that anyone that actually sees a dragon in our group that we're fighting is probably going to target him first, I am worried.
>>
>>36515829
>long term
meant long range
>>
You shrug your shoulders and respond nonchalantly. “I knew. What of it? Everybody needs a goal, no matter how unrealistic that goal might be.”

The Varistha stares at you with like you're insane or something. Granted you are completely insane, but you don't think she knows that. You've kept a pretty tight lid on things since she came to the Temple and you don't think the Varistha told anyone else about the Entity living in your head.

Eventually she speaks up, apparently having gotten over her shock. “How can you just dismiss such a thing so casually? She wants to restore the Rhynian Empire!” She's careful to keep her voice low, presumably to avoid unnecessary attention. “This is serious! Our people warred with the Rhynians for millennia, if she were to reform the Empire it could mean nothing but suffering for our lands.”

You shake your head. “You don't actually think she'll manage it, do you? It's a monumental task, and she's but a single person. You ought not worry about it. Besides, she's a human. She'll probably only be kicking around for another forty or so years before passing onto whatever afterlife humans believe in.” A white lie, she'll probably outlive you and you're biologically immortal. “Even if she does manage to bring back some sort of polity resembling the former Rhynian Empire, it probably won't mean anything for El-Amin. Perhaps she'll restore some lost Rhynian technology and bring together the humans under one banner, but without knowledge of enchanting there's simply no way she'll manage to restore the Empire to its former glory.”

Your words seem to calm the Varistha, and you change the subject before she can voice further concern. “Would you mind telling me the story of that scar, Varistha?” It looks as if a Rhynian Lion caught her across the face with its claws.

(1/3)
>>
>>36515726
>>36515805
I think using light manipulation and beam would have twice the range.
>>36515829
We need to replace her fucking armor.
>>
She reaches up to run her fingers across the jagged tissue, smiling proudly. Rather the opposite of the reaction you were expecting. “I don't mind at all. It's an old war wound I'm quite proud of actually. Even my husband is quite taken with it. I was caught on the Eastern Border by a Kulkarn patrol. I caught their scout unawares and managed to end him, but not before he called for help. In the ensuing melee a swordsman caught me in the face with those strange clawed gloves they wear on their off hands. I flayed him alive for the insult, but the scar really is quite dashing. If anything I ought to have thanked the man.”

You're a little surprised, you hadn't taken her for a soldier. Nor had you thought her married. You suppose it makes sense for a woman of her age, but normally monks only marry within their order. You can't help but wonder if you've unknowingly met her husband or if she broke from tradition. “So you were a soldier, then?”

She shakes her head. “No, my husband and I were returning from a diplomatic mission to the Samrajya. I'm not sure you're aware, but they recently made that snake worship of theirs the official religion, and have began enforcing additional taxes on believers of the true faith. My husband was sent to reason with the Samraat, but it was an impossible task.”

So, wait. Is her husband the Amatya? Talk about marrying up, the Amatya serves as the official head of Pani's Church. He's considered infallible on doctrinal matters and some think he speaks with Pani's voice. If she's wedded to the High Priest, she's considerably more influential than you knew.

Your thoughts are interrupted when she speaks. “I suppose you'll be taking your leave of us soon, then?”
(2/3)
>>
>>36515805
the fire is just to replicate the effect of a scope, but I mean if we could do it for 15-20 vys in order to just scrub someone important of the map, it's worth at least experimenting with right?

>>36515829
I'm thinking more like, horizon distance, not bow and arrow.
>>
You nod. “Yes, I think I will head for El-Amin and then make my way towards the Pa'vala. I have business to attend to there.”

Her faces contorts itself into a worried expression. “The Pa'vala? Are you sure? I have lost many a friend to that dreaded place. It's near impossible to extract water from the air, there's simply none to be found. The sun beats down on the shifting, bottomless sands with an unending fury. It's cursed by Surya, I swear it.”

A shrug is all you can offer. “Normally I would never wish to visit the Pa'vala, but I've little choice in the matter.”

To her credit, she doesn't ask you what it is you must do in the Pa'vala. Anyone who feels the need to visit that barren land has good reason, certainly. “So when do you intend to leave?”

The first one was 70. Then Soma said that the next one would be 140. I'm guessing the one after that will be either 210 or 280. We're not getting GM in another element anytime soon.
>>
>>36516059
Uhh no that is not what he said.
>>
>>36516059
Nah m8. Attempting to grandmaster two things at once would double the DC. The DC depends mostly on the method you choose, but it will always be high. The fact you're a Grandmaster will only affect bonuses.
>>
>>36515981
It was basically said to be the toughest place to go to and is certain death(by the last varisha himself, so that should give you an idea on how hard it is), yet people prefer it over the jungle that is an unknown and isn't known to be cursed or a death trap(i still think they went to live under water or they migrated).
>>
>>36516059
False
>>
After learning that getting to GM changes or personality I am taken aback by trying to reach another so soon. How about we listen to the advice of our master and the past Varistha and pace ourselves a little. >>36516403
>>36516424
>>36516426
Better to extract it from the air as a group meditation with Darzi and Chrys. They would gain massive modifiers and no doubt pass easily.

Might even take more than one session
>>
Am I the only one imagining going into the desert where there is no water, and where we're at our weakest, only to enter a fight and fling our cloak back while Ricky throws out a bunch of ice that we use to destroy shit? And most the creatures their have probably never even seen frozen water before too.

The question is, will they die from shock before they die from their wounds?
>>
>>36516468
And by that I mean sit down and get a thousands of gallons of water. In Ice or liquid form.

Probably need at least 10,000 gallons of water minimum to have a chance at completion.
>>
>>36516479
Most of their thought process will probably be along the lines of
>whats that stuff?
>ow that hurt
>imma kill you fucker
>>
>>36516508
And by completion I mean complete the trip through Pavala.

You'd be surprised how much water we use. And extra is much much much better than too little
>>
>>36516508
That would take weeks if we just extracted it from the air.
>>
>>36516564
Well need it.

We'll need five times that if we bring any mounts.
>>
>>36516564

At grandmaster level? Even if it did take a while, it's not like we don't have the time while we're traveling.
>>
>>36516589
I think Anon means theres no good reason to only extract it from the air. we're right next to the goddam sea.
>>
>>36516564
You underestimate GM.

You're still thinking like a Master.
>>
>>36516564
That's why he said sea.

Store in a shit ton of salt water. Would be fine. We don't need to us and of gallons of fresh water.
and if we need to drink take out 10 gallons of salt water and purify it.

Still think we should read all of varvars notes before we leave. And focus on metal.
>>
>>36516605
Oh I have no qualms about how we get it. Just that whatever we do we should make it a meditation with Chrys and Darzi
>>
>>36516564
Man we can make an ice wall out of thin air strong enough to stop flying bikes cold in a second, this wont take any time at all. Especially if we do it continuously as we go.
>>
>>36516536

More like,
>What is that stuff?
>why is it reshaping itself into a giant hand?
>why am I so cold as it's crushing the life out of me?

and as some last dying thoughts,
>why is it withdrawing and how is it fitting back in the cloak?
>>
>>36516403
You literally can't freeze saltwater normally; the freezing process forces the dissolved salt out of the water and it just becomes normal ice and salt
>>
>>36516625
Better to purify it before putting it in the cloak

You cock your head to the side for a moment in thought. “I'll leave tomorrow, bright and early. At dawn if possible. While I have enjoyed my time here I have accomplished all that I set out originally to accomplish. I have attained grandmastery of Water magic, I have actually relaxed, if only briefly, for the first time in the last... I suppose it must be approaching two months now that I have been on the road. Tell me, what is the date?”

She smirks. “I suppose it's understandable you've lost track of the days, you've been unconscious for more than a week. An exceptionally quick meditation, though quite slow considering the difficulty of the meditation. Regardless, it's the twenty-first of Bandali.”

To think, your birthday is less than three weeks away. You'll be turning twenty-seven. It's really remarkable how much you've progressed, considering your age. If you recall correctly the only one of your former fellow apprentices who has managed to keep pace is Rajani, and you're relatively certain you've surpassed her now that you've attained grandmastery. You may be the youngest Grandmaster in Pidjata, you're certainly the youngest you know of.

Your thoughts are yet again interrupted when the Varistha speaks. “If you'll excuse me, I'll believe I'll take my leave of you. I fancy a dance, and it seems unlikely you'll be able to oblige me.” She nods towards Chrys, who still slumbers quite soundly at your side, her grip on your arm iron-clad. “Congratulations on your achievement, Mikhael. I can only hope we'll see great things from you in the future.”

(1/2)
>>
You smile politely and she departs, making her way towards the dance floor. The band seems to consist of an oud player, a sleepy looking old man on the drums, and someone playing a long, bulbous wind instrument that you don't recognize. You think it's an Eastern invention. Odd that you haven't seen Sister Balik since you told your story to the crowd at the inn, you were hoping for more Oud lessons.

>Wake Chrys, ask if she'd like to dance.
>Try to extricate yourself from her grip so you can retire for the night and read, or meditate.

Soma, do different cultures have different habits about sex as well? Like how missionary is pretty much the default in most of the western world, I assume that's not the case in other places, is that right? You attempt to quietly extract yourself from Chryssa's grip, but find it quite firm. You stand, trying your best not to wake her in the process, and with a jerk manage to rip your arm free. For a moment, you think yourself victorious. Then you notice Chryssa listing to her side, her head angling towards the stone you were previously sitting on. You reach out, trying to catch her. Unfortunately you're nowhere near fast enough. Her head hits the stone with a heavy thud and she jolts awake, bolting upright.

She frowns slightly, although considering her usual range of expression that's a sign of severe displeasure from Chrys. She reaches on hand up to rub the spot where her head hit the stone, wincing in apparent pain as she touches the lump swiftly growing from her scalp. Her eyes focus on yours, and for a moment you feel an unfamiliar tightness in your chest. She looks so betrayed, like you just kicked her puppy or performed some similarly horrible act. For a moment you think you see a hint of wetness in her eyes, but it's gone in an instant.

She lurches to her feet, stumbles, and very nearly tips over again. Wow, she really has had far too much to drink. You catch her, sliding one arm around her midsection and hefting her to her feet. She shoves you weakly away while mumbling something to herself, but there isn't really any feeling in it. If she'd wanted to she could've flung you across the room, as is you're barely even unbalanced.

She mumbles something in that course language of hers, eventually throwing her arm over your shoulder and allowing you to help her out of the room. She manages to get her feet under her, but it's a gradual process. “Gods above, Chrys. How much did you drink tonight?” You have to raise your voice to be heard over the din of noise, but it seems to get across.

half an hour dude. calm down, im sure soma is taking his time, or someone finally put two silver ones though his head for killing off Var Var
>>
She cast an icy look in your direction, but can't manage to hold it for more than a few seconds before she turns her attention to the floor and putting one foot in front of the other. “Your fault, kept sayin' things like... 'Ohh just one more cup, drinks on me'. Didn' even wanna drink. Wine's too sweet anyway. Then you... went and dropped my head on a rock. Hurts, you know.”

She leans into you, apparently a weak shove though it's an uncoordinated effort and amounts to little. You've managed to make it out of the Atrium and into the hallways. Several monks lay scattered about the halls, some with friends and some alone. Many with a bottle of wine or a cup in their hands. You kick back the few remaining dregs in your own cup before letting it fall to the stone floor, no longer your problem.

Chrys begins to speak again, slightly more coherent this time. “D'you even know the reason I want my husband dead? I have let myself remain shackled to the... fucking rat bastard for-” She turns her head to stare at you for a moment, shaking her head. “-I don't even remember, years. Didn't just decide this out of the blue.”

This is getting into dangerous territory, to put things lightly. You walk with a little more urgency towards your room, though this merely causes Chrys to stumble and further slows you down as you have to stop to let her catch her balance. She at least seems partially distracted by the world spinning, based on her semi-coherent muttering. Eventually she finds her feet, and the two of you resume walking. However, before you can reach the hall which leads to your rooms she grabs hold of you with surprising force and shoves you against the wall.
(2/3)
>>
>>36518106
oh boy
>>
You find yourself pinned, slouched against the wall. Chryssa's face seems uncomfortably close despite the height difference between the two of you, the sweet scent of spiced wine carrying heavily on her breath. You feel her chest pressing against your own, her heart beating rapidly. If you were in dangerous territory before, you've just stumbled into a death trap.

You try to slip out of her grip, but find yourself unable. Her hands grip your upper arms hard enough that you're in pain. Awkwardly, you clear your throat and try to think of something to say, anything to escape the situation. “Listen, Chrys. I know how you feel about me. Now hardly seems the time to discuss such matters. You're drunk as-!” You find yourself cut off when her lips press against yours in a clumsy, inexperienced, and unpleasantly forceful kiss. If there's one thing she does have going for her it's passion, surprising from someone as otherwise stoic as she.

Your teeth knock together, but she doesn't seem to mind. You do, it hurts. You struggle initially but against her overwhelming strength you accomplish little. You suppose you could cast a spell, but that may merely make the situation worse. Eventually she pulls away from you, breathing heavily. There's a nervous look in her eye, and she suddenly seems very small. Especially once you've drawn yourself to your full height.

You rub your bruised lips, healing them with a touch of magic. You consider just what it is you ought to do about this situation she's forced you into. Gods, but does she lack elegance. Seemed almost more like she was trying to wound you rather than kiss you.

I think outright saying that we'll be lovey dovey after we kill the guy is a bit too much right now guys, like seriously, she feels insecure, but we have to be honest about this, we need to talk about things, or get Darzi to meditate some info to her, yeah?

Chrys staunchly refuses to meet your eye as the two of you stand across the hall from one another. Nobody saw that, fortunately. Otherwise you could get in significant trouble, as could she. Eventually you break the silence, reaching out to put a consoling hand on her shoulder. “You're drunk, it's understandable. We can talk about this after your husband is dead.” She looks up, obviously hopeful, but you hold up a finger to indicate pause. “I'm not saying we're going to get together, I'm not saying we are together, I'm merely saying we'll talk about it.”

She nods firmly, once more adopting a featureless, stoic expression. It likely wasn't the answer she was looking for, but she doesn't seem wholly disappointed by it. The two of you resume your walk towards the rooms, this time on opposite ends of the hall. It wouldn't seem proper to be quite so friendly after what happened. Eventually the two of you part ways, she going to her room and you to yours.

Immediately as you step into the room Zahak leaps upon you. You're knocked back by the weight of the dragon slamming into your torso, and your back thuds quite loudly against the wooden door. He's grown, he's grown quite a bit. Where as before he was the size of an average dog, perhaps a bit on the small side, he's now grown nearly two feet longer and seemingly much, much heavier. You'd estimate him to be perhaps six feet tall should you stand him up on his hind legs, and his wing span must be nearly twice that.

You also notice that his scales have darkened significantly. Where as once they were pale white, they're now more of a pale green with touches of yellow. His head, crowned by proper horns rather than the tiny nubs he had when he was born, is colored gold in contrast to the rest of his body. Bony spikes have sprouted along his back and at the knees of his back legs, and the spike protruding from the 'elbow' of his wing has grown significantly longer, and far more hooked.

(1/5-6)
>>
You're flooded with thoughts of worry, displeasure, anger, elation, happiness, fear, and confusion. He didn't know where you were! Momma wouldn't tell him! He didn't see you for forever! He thought you were dead! Though he's not using words his thoughts are much more fully formed. He's transmitting far more complex concepts than he was before you attained Grandmastery. You're pleased by his progress, and attempt to communicate as much.

Eventually he seems to take notice of your new level of power. Apparently you feel different, from what you can pick up via his thoughts. More powerful. Calmer. Less dragon-like. He isn't displeased, at least. In fact he seems curious. He wants to learn. He wants you to teach him. He wants to cuddle. He wants you to pet him. He wants to hunt down prey. His thoughts go off on a tangent about making passes at goats and incinerating them with his mighty fire breath, but then he once more gets interested in you and what your deal is.

You gently push him away from yourself and make your way towards the bed. He follows right behind you, annoyed that you evidently don't want to spend time with him. You admonish him for thinking such nonsense. “Tired, Zahak. I'm tired. That's all. We can still spend time together.” While speaking, you transmit the thoughts and the emotions behind them as well. You're pleased to see he reacts to his name, his head perking up at the mention.

(2/5-6)
>>
You take a seat on your bed, surprised to see the bedding hasn't been incinerated though much of it has been singed by the burning blanket, which sits firmly in the center. You curl your legs beneath you as Zahak climbs onto the bed, curling up and plopping his head into your lap. He stares up at you with adoration, slitted yellow eyes narrowing contentedly as you run a hand wreathed in flame along his flank.

You reach into your cloak and withdraw a sheaf of the Varistha's notes regarding the nature of the universe. However, as you begin to read Zahak moves his head to cover the notes, staring up at you pleadingly. With a sigh, you resume petting his flank, setting the notes to the side and leafing through them one handed as best you can. Eventually you find your place and resume reading more or less where you left off.

The Varistha proposes that the common method of meditation, that is clearing one's mind and slipping into a sort of trance, is not only inefficient but down right wrong. He states that the proper way to meditate is to focus on Surya's Heart, the realm in which magic originates, and the rend in reality that has allowed magic to seep into the world. He states that Vatis ought to contemplate the endless void and the gods, rather than clearing their mind.

His later writings seem to focus on how to go about doing this. To begin with, it apparently takes some spell casting. Now, the vys expended ought to be more than reimbursed over the course of meditation. However, it does take a higher initial investment of vys than 'regular' meditation. One ought to use Earth or Metal magic to get a sense for the fabric of reality in their vicinity and its composition. Apparently manipulate and poison will also serve this purpose, but the former is less effective while the latter can result in ripping a hole in reality.

(3/5-6)
>>
He goes on a tangent about just how it is he learned that poisoning the fabric of reality can result in a tear, and just how this can effect both casting magic and meditating. Apparently it was on the Third Assault on Longia that he first discovered the results of tampering with the fabric of reality.

The Hiacians were losing, and badly. The Rhynians had released some sort of giant domesticated spider. While the spiders were dealt with, it weakened them enough that the Rhynian golems, vatis, and soldiers were having an easy time of beating them back. Sehzade was ordered by one of the enchanters to help him with a spell, and before his very eyes the air around the man started to flicker, cracks creeping through mid air as if it were but a reflection in a mirror. There was a loud crack, and suddenly he found himself staring into the endless black. The Hiacians beat a retreat as void creatures spilled from the hole, slaughtering the Rhynian troops. Curiously, he states that the Rhynian golems were possessed by the strange spirits of the void, turning them against their masters. Eventually the hole closed itself, but it persisted for months according to the Varistha's writings.

Well, you certainly want no part in that. He slowly makes his way back to the topic at hand – meditation. Once one has felt out the fabric of reality with Earth or Metal magic, they ought to slowly attempt to slip their consciousness through the cracks. This is easier in some places than it is in others, as some places have more cracks than others. If done properly, it should feels as though one's consciousness is slowly bleeding out of their body, seeping into the world around them. They should exist as though without a body, floating in a field of grey.

The Varistha is careful to note that this is not the Void. This is rather a realm between reality and the void. A buffer. Evidently one is able to travel extremely quickly from one location to another in this realm, with but a thought. However, if the soul travels too far from the body the body will die, and trap the Vatis as a consciousness without a physical manifestation. Apparently there are ways to prevent this or restore the Vatis' body; however, the Varistha does not expound on what these methods might be. He merely mentions that they supposedly exist.

Reading on, he states that once within this grey realm, it is safe to erode the soul with Earth magic. The parts lost will regenerate once at the gateway to Surya's Heart and eroding the soul makes it infinitely simpler to slip through the imperceptible pores which allow one to pass from this 'buffer' area into the Void proper.

He states that once within the void, the Vatis will find themselves in great danger. Void creatures delight in preying upon the souls of the foolish and will not hesitate to consume unwary travelers. The meditating Vatis ought simply let their soul drift as it pleases, as invariably the soul will take them to a Gate. A Gate, as the Varistha explains it, is a passage leading to Surya's Heart. Often they've been sealed, or fallen inactive, but even inactive and sealed Gates are still useful for meditating upon. Apparently, this method makes even the most complex of effects simple matters to learn.

No, Metal or Earth are prerequisites to use this technique, using one or the other has few if any inherent bonuses. You'll be using Metal, but little would change if you use Earth. You're equally competent with both.

I was going to have this be your 'confirmation' meditation, the last step you need to take to use this as an actual meditation technique. I've added a description of the technique to the combat pastebin, though I'm thinking of making a pastebin solely for meditation techniques, or perhaps moving them to the Magic pastebin, or the spellbook.

Guys, what was our planed route after we leave the temple? El-Amin first or Chryssa's husband first?

In El-Amin, I propose we first visit our Master (show off our dragon and friends), then do the Grandmaster test, then visit our family ("Hey Ma, I'm home, I missed you. These are my new GM clothes, this is the game that is going to make us even richer, [this is my son, ] these are my friends, we're going to the deep desert now.")

Soma, are non-samjan allowed to take the test for Vatis robes in El-Amin? Darzi can take the test for fire, of course, but what about Prof for fire, Chryssa for earth/water, Mortia for nature?
Are the robe test a once-only thing (i.e. for the right to wear a robe) or do we have to do tests for the other elements as well (i.e. a test of proficiency in that element)?
>>
You neatly stack the notes and tap them into order, slipping them back into your cloak so Ricky can return them to the chest. You fold make yourself comfortable, or as comfortable as you can manage, and get ready to meditate. However, a thought occurs to you. You reach out via the brooches to your friend Demetrios in Anthus, feeling your mind touch his. Unfortunately it seems he's asleep, you catch only vague wisp of thoughts and a few rough, ill-defined images. Rather than waking him, you withdraw to allow him rest. You'll simply need to contact him while you travel tomorrow.

Your initial instinct is to slip into a trance, but you ignore this urge. Instead you 'reach out' with Metal magic. Feeling out the world around you. You find this method comes strangely easy to you, but merely attribute this to your accumulated insanity or perhaps your knowledge of enchanting.

Slowly you begin to feel the imperceptible threads which make up reality. The same threads you tore apart when you enchanted your blanket. They weave themselves from seemingly nothing, golden strands highlighted against a silver background. It reminds you in a vague sort of way of the illustrations you saw within the Metal Codex. With the threads, and the gaps between the threads, exposed you begin to force your consciousness from your body. It's a difficult task, but you manage it. You were already somewhat detached from reality anyway.

You feel yourself slipping away, an incoherent mass of whatever it is that composes a spirit. A golden mote of light in an endless field of grey. You vaguely see the outline of your body behind the 'screen' of the barrier. It appears blue from this realm. Looking to the opposite end of this narrow corridor, you instead a dark grey pane. Stretching endlessly in every direction. That, you assume, is the void.

(1/2)
>>
You use Earth magic to erode your very soul, bits and pieces of yourself flaking away in long strips. You find yourself forgetful. For some reason the name of your elder brother escapes you, as does the face of your mother. Who your childhood friends were, or if you even had a childhood. At first you feel a rising sense of panic, but then that's gone as well. Replaced by an emotionless emptiness. A sort of vague longing.

You feel yourself gravitating towards the void, passing through the barrier like water through a sieve. As you emerge on the other end, you find yourself faced with an endless realm of black, an impossible black. Light, you feel, has never been known in this place. You are but a impossibly small flame in an impossibly large room.

A 'glance' behind you reveals that the pane of grey which separated the barrier from the void is gone. Behind you stretches only black. Concerning, but not overly so. Presumably you need only wish to return in order to do so. Slowly, you begin to drift. In no particular direction, really. At one point you're fairly convinced you're merely twisting about in a pattern. Eventually you feel yourself tugged, pulled towards some distant force. You allow your spirit to do as it wishes. After all, you've yet to see a thing in this realm besides the endless black.

You drift through the void for what feels like an eternity, your sense of time distorted drastically. It probably only took a few minutes, perhaps less, for you to reach the massive stone structure. Were it not for the gaping maw of swirling color within, you probably wouldn't have noticed it. The stone that composes the Gate is an onyx black in coloration, only barely lighter than the surroundings.

You can see why the Varistha dubbed it a gateway into the Heart of Surya. The vys within swirls, every color represented. You see purples, reds, yellows, greens, blues, and most every color in between. You even see the white coloration of pure vys, in fact it's predominant. It seems to pulse and throb with each passing second, spewing and endless stream of magic into the surroundings. Just hovering near it, you feel yourself replenished. Your soul restored.

You feel an urge, almost irresistible, to step through the Gate. You find yourself drifting forwards before you even realize you've had the idea. You manage to stop yourself mere centimeters from the massive, swirling portal. The heat radiating out of the portal is immense, were you in physical form you can only imagine you would be left a pile of ash were you to stand this close. It is a stark contrast to the frigid void around you.

You stare deep, deep into the swirling vortex, the shifting hues of color leaving you spell bound. How could you even consider for a moment not stepping through? The chance to be joined with your god, how could one resist such a concept? You press onward, your spirit passing beyond the threshold of the gateway and into the vortex beyond.

You feel yourself stretch and warp under the magical pressure of the vortex, but you do not break. As fast as Surya's heart destroys your soul the magic which radiates within it restores your soul. In many ways it reminds you of your recent Grandmaster meditation, your consciousness quickly becoming a constantly shifting mass of memories, concepts, emotions, and instincts amidst an endless storm of power, raw power.

You seize hold of whatever constant you can find. Your name, your parents, your home, all of that slips away. The only thing you can safely cling to is your power. Your knowledge. What you know and the influence you can exert on reality. When you are reduced to your most basic form, that is all you have left. That is all that you are. Power. Your memories, your hopes, your dreams, they mean nothing to those beings greater than you. Only what you can do for them.

You find yourself awakening in your room, Zahak snoozing peacefully in your lap. You're sweating profusely, and you're shaking violently. Your entire body seems to be burning, burning endlessly. Your mouth tears open and you cry out, cry out until your throat is hoarse. You collapse onto the floor, writhing violently as the fire burns its way through your body, through your mind, through your very soul. The world is reduced to naught but the fire within, the horrible, horrible burning. When will it end? When will the torment stop? What did you do to deserve this?
