We'll start out with Mato today! Because everybody loves Mato, and she's fun to write, and also easier to get started with because of her more simplistic way of thinking about things and what-not!

Don't you judge me.

Don't forget about INSIGHT CHECKS!
It's simple! Just:
>Reply to an EsperQM™ post
>Greentext something from within that post that you want to know more about
>And (if you wish to make my life easier/get a more relevant bit of insight) ask a question or make a comment- not in greentext- below your greentext!

VOTING PROTOCOL:
>When voting, put the option you're voting for in greentext, linking back to the post you're voting towards.
>If you want to do a write-in, choose the “>Something else? (WRITE-IN!)” option, and put your write-in in greentext below it.
>If you wish to support a write-in, vote as you normally would, link back to the post containing the write-in, and include whatever it was that that particular anon... well, wrote!

FURTHERMORE, I'd prefer that you do INSIGHT CHECKS and VOTES in separate (but equal) posts!

You are Mato Tsuruya, and your head's starting to hurt a little. You still feel bad about what happened yesterday, but feeling bad about it seems like it makes Akari feel bad, and that's not okay, so you'll just have to get over it!

It's... August 1st, right? August comes after July, doesn't it?

Akari and Fate's mom are talking about a weird thingie that does stuff to make esper abilities better or something, and using lots of big words and stuff.

Fate's doing her usual grumpy stuff and seems to be half-listening to their discussion.

All throughout the room, which isn't small or even not-huge, people dressed in smart-people clothes and wearing safety goggles are bustling about, working at computers, inhaling their coffee, and talking about stuff and things.

The Eye of Judgment is currently tucked away in your pocket, thrumming the way he tends to when he's thinking.

… which means you probably can't talk to him at the moment.

Shoot.

Eye-chan's really smart, and he's not so hard to understand if you just... listen to him.

Er... he doesn't talk, of course, but...

You furrow your brow and try to figure out what word to use, only to give up after a few moments of thinking.

It's on the tip of your... tongue? Brain?

You shake your head.

There are a couple of scientists or whatever-they-are standing around a table covered in those 'Psi-amp' thingies. A lady and two guys. They seem like they're talking about them.

Maybe they'd tell you what's going on?

Nobody told you 'don't touch anything' or 'wait here', so it's okay, right?

>>
>>36488587
Like you could keep your hands to yourself if Akari was nearby.
>>
You glance around for a few moments, feeling somewhat awkward in this... unfamiliar environment.

After determining that there are, in fact, no 'do not touch' signs- or, really, any signs that say anything like that at all- you decide that you'll try to find out more from those smart-looking people over there.

A bunch of smart people standing around a table covered in the things you want to learn about have to know /something/, right?

Right.

You make your way over to their table, eyes darting uncomfortably about the room all the while- nobody's staring at you, or rolling their eyes, or sighing, or putting a hand on their face, or even whispering stuff while pointing- in fact, it seems like... nobody minds.

Huh.

Must be okay, then!

You perk up a bit at the thought, and only barely resist the urge to skip over to your chosen nerds.

You reach the table without incident, and find that the lady is doing something on a flat touch-screen, one of the guys is saying numbers and things to her, and the third guy has what you can only assume is a disassembled 'Psi-amp' and a set of weird-looking tools that he seems to be using.
>>
The lady has short, dark hair, a slim build, and slightly-poofy lips that make her slight scowl look a little silly. She looks like she might be one of those 'christmas cake' types.

The guy with the tools and stuff is kinda scruffy-looking, and bigger than the average dude- you think he's probably pretty young, because otherwise he seems like he'd have more beard and less stubble. His hair is black, and very... shaggy? Wild. Unkempt and what-not.

The guy doing the talking is pretty scrawny-looking, with glasses that have rims that are thicker than is justifiable, and, for some reason, his relatively-light brown hair is some combination of 'buzzcut' and 'fauxhawk'.

You stand there for a moment, and none of them so much as look up at you.

You wait for a few more moments, just to be safe, before giving an enthusiastic, “Hi!”

The three of them stop and look up at you.

The scrawny dude blinks and says nothing, then looks at the woman, who -after sharing a look with Mr. Scrawny McNoodlearms for a moment or two- gives you a rather confused-sounding, “Uh... hello?”

Scruffy-guy puts his tools and science stuff down on the table and scratches his bristle-y chin, making an audible (to you, anyways) scritching sound, kinda like cleaning off a grill with a wire brush or something. He looks at the other two in a way that says, 'You get back to work, I can handle this,' and, true enough, the pair get back to touch-screen-ing and number-and-stuff-saying as if they hadn't ever stopped.

“Whaddya need, kid? You lookin' for your mom or dad or somethin'?”

You shake your head. “I'm here with my friend and my girlfriend,” you inform him, indicating Fate and Akari as appropriate. “But Fate-chan's being all grumpy and stuff like she usually does when her mom's around, and Akari and Fate's mom are talking about stuff I don't understand-” you gesture at the Psi-amps on the table. “-I thought you might be able to tell me what's up.”

He scratches his chin again. “So, you're Takamichi's other half, then?” You nod, and he chuckles. “I figured you'd be taller.”

You shrug. “I am. Sometimes.”

“Ah, another esper, then?”

You nod. “Level 3 Physical Enhancement,” you state.

He nods appreciatively. “Nice. I bet you bench more than I do, huh?” He chuckles again. “Anyways, yeah, I don't see any problem with answerin' any questions ya might have.”

You waste no time in asking what it is, exactly, that a Psi-amp /does/.

“It's a pretty simple concept, really,” he says, “they're cranial implants that help to... focus... an esper's powers. It's like...” he scratches his chin. “Like if you were to take a star- say, the Sun- and make it so that, rather than radiating light and heat in every direction, its entire output was put out by one side.”

You blink.

“This... is one of those A.I.M. things, right?”

He nods. “Yes! That's-” he frowns a little and scratches his cheek. “It's... complicated.”

You agree completely.

“See,” he says, “you're not really wrong, but... you're not right, either. A.I.M. diffusion is certainly relevant, here, but there's more to it than that, and having a Psi-amp doesn't get rid of an esper's A.I.M. diffusion field. It's...” He pauses.

“It's like a magnifying glass,” he says, after a couple of moments, clear triumph in his voice, “sunlight alone won't roast ants, right? But, take a magnifying glass and focus it, and you've got yourself an arthropod-destroying death ray.”

“So... if I had one of those, it'd make me stronger?”

He nods. “Most likely, yeah. Stronger, faster- all the things that your ability does, just... better.”

Hmmm...

You scratch your chin, too.

Miku-nee always said, 'If something seems like it's too good to be true, ask questions until they give up on lying to you.'

Thus, you pose a question. “What's the catch?”

He chuckles again. “Well, the prototypes had some pretty irksome flaws, to be certain. One of 'em was really fragile, one seemed to act as... well, as an aphrodisiac.” He shakes his head with a laugh. “Hell, before this version, they were bulkier and powered by a nine-volt battery!”

You take all this in as he picks up one of the Psi-amps and shows it to you. He points to a power jack on the device. “Now we've got some nicer, /rechargeable/ internal batteries,” he says, “so the only real 'catch' is that you've gotta plug yourself in to charge the thing up- and, unlike, say, a cellphone, you can't really pull the thing outta your skull and leave it on the charger.”

He chuckles, then brings the device up to his head, placing it against his left temple. “They don't use much power, so they don't need to be charged particularly often, but charging can take anywhere from three to six hours if it's only done once a week or so.” He taps the Psi-amp with a finger. “I suppose there's also the small portion of the device that protrudes from the... wearer's?” He frowns. “... user, maybe?”

You agree with him- user sounds better.

[1/3-ish]
>>
He nods. “Right, right... um... Oh, right. Yeah, okay- there's the portion of the device that sticks outta the user's head, y'know? I've heard all sorts of mixed opinions on it. Some think it's cool, some think it's unnerving, some find it distasteful, and a couple of people have asked if we could make a version that goes across the forehead- under the skin, mind- and protrudes from each temple.”

He laughs. “Unfortunately, we're not really able to do that, so asymmetry will have to do.”

Hrm.

You don't mind asymmetry too much. You wear your pigtails asymmetrically, in fact.

And it's not like Akari doesn't secretly find you more and more attractive as you add more and more metal to your person.

In fact, not only does she secretly find a metal-clad you more attractive, she does it /unconsciously/.

Besides, one of these Psi-amp doohickeys might make you tough enough to not need to use that hammer/mace/laser-staff-thingie/club/whatever-else-it-might-be thing that Miku-nee made for you.

N-not that you don't like your sister's gifts or anything! You just don't like having to store all this crap in your coat, is all!

[2/3]
>>
You bring a hand up to your chin/mouth and do that thing that some people do when they think.

Akari didn't like the idea of Psi-stones, so maybe she won't want you to have a Psi-amp?

They both have 'Psi' in their names, and they both make esper abilities better...

You think Akari didn't like the idea of you getting a Psi-stone because she doesn't like aliens in general, though...

But... maybe she doesn't want you suddenly getting stronger or something?

With how much the two of you share physical contact... you can't really blame her, you guess. Still, that's not how your power works. You know your own strength, after all. Just like she knows fire.

Akari and Testarossa are still talking, and Fate's still being grumpy.

“- I'd recommend charging for fifteen or so minutes a day,” says the small, orange-haired girl that Precia Testarossa has become, “else it'll be, like, six hours once a week, and that'd suck.”

You nod thoughtfully. You can deal with that, you think.

YOU are Akari Takamichi, and... this Psi-amp thing sounds pretty sweet.

Still, it wouldn't feel right to make a decision without consulting Mato. After all, you didn't want her to get a Psi-stone, and she didn't get a Psi-stone. You'd be a hypocrite if you didn't ask her opinion, and you're pretty sure you're not a hypocrite.

More power is an attractive prospect, and I see no reason not to support Mato in getting one if she wants to but given the whole burning Mato's hands thing that happened this morning, I'd expect Akari to be a little worried about getting more powerful herself faster than she learns to control it. Mato removes her hand from your mouth, and you fill her in.

“I don't see any real reason to avoid them,” you say, “charging is hardly a drawback, and there don't seem to be any side-effects or anything.” You pause. “More power is always a nice thing to have, y'know?”

Mato thinks for a moment, then asks, “Do you think I should get one?”

You shrug. “I won't force you to. Nor will I forbid it. It's your choice, Mato.”

She hesitates, then nods. “I think... I think I'll do it!”

After a second or two, she tilts her head a little.

“What about you, Akari?”

There are some reservations to be had about control, but Akari can probably handle it.

To be fair, that "one strike" also created the Eye of Judgment - at present, there's no way to tell if we can repeat that.

Yeah, but the eye was the projectile we used so we shouldn't need to create another one.
Unless shooting him at high speed towards our opponents is not good for him or something.

Now there's something to Science, wheter or not using the Eye as a weapon again is a good idea, if we can help him by giving him more power, and wether or not he can make himself into a guided missile of destruction.

I'd say that these experiments are better done in the background, in between sessions. No need to bloat the quest with more science.
I still say we need to try to use one of the bullets from Burning Glory to empower the Eye in a SRW-esque attack
>>
>>36496166
Isn't the Eye a pacifist? I suppose we can probably convince it to give us a hand in a life-or-death scenario, though. And I applaud your drive on creating new techniques, but I'm not sure how we would go about doing that.
>>
>>36496219
We can probably convince him to disable the enemy's Mechs for us, and depending on how good he is at controlling his flight at high speeds, it might be feasible to have him destroy the weapons of their infantry.

I suppose any super attacks we create using him would only be useable against large enemy spacecrafts or large vehicles the same scale as MechaGodzilla.

>>36496330
Seeing as it's the Tau we're up against, those aren't exactly going to be in short supply.

You... have some reservations.

You've lost control more than you'd like to admit.

But... you also need to get stronger.

You look down at your hands, and ask yourself if you can handle more power.

You nod. “Yeah. I'll do it.”

Mato's face lights up, and she bounces up and down a little. “Should we do it now?”

You look to Precia, who shrugs.

… You only now realize that she looks... a lot like Mokarin... AND Fate.

… Huh.

Mato grabs both of your hands, pulling you out of your thoughts.

You look into Mato's eyes, and you see the determination etched into those deep blue irises.

You wonder if you could ever dream of matching it.

… perhaps not. Perhaps you'll never have that same fierce drive, that same motivation.

But you'll be god-damned if you don't give it your best shot.

You turn to Precia and grin. “I don't see any reason to waste time waiting around.”

She shrugs and hops down from her stool. “Is that so?”

You nod, and Mato does the same. Precia smirks and gestures for you to follow. “Well, then,” she says, “Step into my office.”

You follow, as does Mato.

YOU are Akane Takamichi, and, at the moment, you're trying to convince your girlfriend that this superheavy tank you're designing /needs/ at least two cannons, four autocannons, and six or more heavy machine guns.

The cyan-haired idol doesn't seem very convinced, though.

“Why add another cannon to the hull? Why isn't the main gun enough? And what about these extra turrets here protruding from the sides? Are they worth the resources? Are they worth their weight?”

She sighs.

You sigh, too.

How can you fight off aliens in a huge tank that /isn't/ a Baneblade?

That's just... inhuman.

“There's no way we can realistically have two cannons,” Miku says, “in fact, I'm not all that certain we can manage a turret. We might have to settle for a fixed main gun.” She squints at the sketches and diagrams the two of you have produced and/or gathered. “It'd make those smaller gun turrets a lot more viable, though,” she notes.

You frown. Perhaps something more like a Stormsword would be workable?

If you're remembering correctly, the Stormsword was specialized in urban combat and close infantry support. Not to mention a bit smaller than a Baneblade, meaning less materials.

Still, though. A fixed main gun?

Blech.

>Keep pushing for the Baneblade.
>Propose the Stormsword.

You scratch your chin with the clip of your mechanical pencil. “How about this?” You sketch a Stormsword on a fresh piece of paper. Fixed forward-mounted main gun, a pair of autocannons mounted on the frontal armor, twin-linked HMGs mounted beneath the sponsons protruding from either side of the vehicle, autocannons mounted in the turrets perched atop either sponson, a coaxial HMG, and a cupola-mounted HMG for the commander to use.

You don't even bother trying to get away with including the flamers. Even if they'd be allowed, they probably wouldn't be all that effective, anyways.

Besides, you've got a sister for that stuff.

Miku looks over your drawing in silence for a bit, then looks up at you and smiles.

“This,” she says, tapping the paper for emphasis, “this, I can work with.”

You blink a few times. “Really?”

She nods. “Yeah. This is good stuff, Akane!” She smiles at you, and your heart flutters a little more than you'll ever admit to anyone.

You dismiss her praise with a wave of your hand and a laugh. “I'm just doodling tanks, here,” you say, “you're the one who figured out their technology and how to implement it in a cannon.”

She blushes and leans in to give you a quick kiss on the cheek. “So,” she says, “do we call your guys? Or mine?”

>“Yours.”
>“Mine.”

>WHY NOT BOTH

Okay, writing!
>>
“... Why not both?”

She blinks at this. “... fair point.” She shakes her head. “We're gonna have an interesting week, aren't we?”

You whip out your phone and find the appropriate contact. “It'll be something, alright,” you say, “but I don't know that that something's 'interesting'...”

She laughs. “I guess there's only one way to find out, then, huh?”

You snort. “Yeah...” You tap the first name of those you need to call. “I guess so,” you mutter as you bring the phone up to your ear.

The phone picks up on the first ring. “What can I do ya for, Red?”

You consider the best way to phrase your answer. Then, after a few moments of that, you decide, 'screw it,' and go for the throat. “I'm putting a team together. To design and build a three-hundred ton super-heavy tank... in a week.”

You hear a heavy sigh on the other end of the line. “... One of these days, Red, you're gonna be the death of me.”

You smirk. “There's worse ways to go.”

“... Fair enough. When do we start?”

You look at your watch. “... three hours and twenty-two minutes ago.”
