The monster ahead of me continues to stare me down. At least; with whatever little bit of it's face that I can make out.
We've been staring at each other wordlessly for what feels like forever. Neither of us are moving or speaking to one another.

I really hope he doesn't realize that I'm not feeling very confident.

I am Itsukuma Masami. I'm currently facing off against yet another monster that has decided to cause trouble around my school. At the very least, they should wait until after school when no one is around to do so.

"Tell me where Magician is!" His voice growls much more angrily this time.
"No!" And my voice doesn't sound very intimidating, either.

He shifts his weight onto one foot, letting his posture relax.
"Listen, you. I don't know who you are, but I'm not looking for a fight today."

He reaches to his side and pulls out a very long, skinny sword.
"So I will give you a few minutes to find Magician and bring her to me."

They never learn, do they?
"And why should I?!" Again, I try to sound intimidating, but I'm really not.
"Because your pint-sized armor can't stand to the cunning swordplay of Emillion Escago!"

Wait.
"Um. Who?"

He sighs, pointing his thumb toward himself.
"Emillion. Escago."

Wait, this monster has a real name? They never have those. This could be the first one I've met who does.

>"Um. Excuse me, I'll be right back."
>"Forget it! I'm gonna beat you up!"
>"No!"
>"Maybe we can talk this over?"

Um.. Umm!

Wait, something is strange here.

"Um. You don't know who I am?" I ask, meekly.
"Should I know who you are?" The monster replies, unamused.

This is also the first monster I've met who doesn't know my connection with Fortune. He also didn't call me 'Priestess' when I first met him. Maybe if I'm careful, it can stay that way.

"H-Hi! It's nice to meet you! I'm Itsukuma Masami!"
Whew, saved it!

He looks at me with confusion, lowering his sword slightly.

I raise my hands up and try to pretend like I really don't know what I'm doing.
"Maybe we can talk about this?"

He moves in a swift motion as his sword is sheathed back to his side. He kneels down to reach about my eye level.
"Forgive me for earlier. What did you want to talk about , little girl?"
"Call me Masami, Please. And, um-"

I look around to see if anyone else is around, or at least if anyone has noticed that there's a huge monster standing in the courtyard. It's like everyone at this school is blind, sometimes!

"Did you come alone?" I ask him.

He then REACHES OVER AND PATS MY HEAD, UGH GET IT OFF.

I reach my hand up and try prying his gauntlet from my scalp. Which is when I realize that his hand is very strong. Normally I would think that it's my usual lack of strength at fault.
That's when I realize that I'm still wearing Bel, a card that gives me super strength. Which means this monster is way stronger than even Bel is.
That's troubling.

He notices my discomfort and removes his hand from my head.
"We're looking for a special person named 'Magician'. She took something very special from a friend of mine. Do you know anyone like that around here?"

>"C-can't say I do!"
>"She's not here!"
>"I don't know her, but maybe I can help you look?"
>"Stay here! I'll go try and find her!"
>"Forget it! I wouldn't tell you even if I knew!"

Hmm, so he's really only here because he's looking for something.
This is silly, there is nothing here that is worth risking the safety of everyone at school. Especially if this guy is as tough as he seems to be.

"Well! I can't tell you where she is, buuut I may be able to help you get what you're looking for back! Stealing is wrong after all."

The monster eyes me incredulously.
"You 'can't tell' me, does that mean you know where Magician is?"

Wait wait wait wait, no no!
"No no no, I just think I can help you look for it!"
I try to act cheery, but that was a really close call.

He stands to his feet and brushes himself off.
"Where do you think she may have hid something like that?"

We search around the courtyard for an hour while I keep trying to think of a plan on what to do next.
I don't think I'm fooling him, sooner or later he's going to realize that I'm just stalling for time.
Still, it really isn't nice for Kaori to just take something from them like that. Terrible monsters or not, stealing isn't something that she should be doing.

Gentle chimes ring out from the open window of the library. A grandfather clock inside rings its hourly tune, finishing with three very loud chimes.

I check my phone, it's 3 o'clock. How did so much time slip away with this?
Classes will be letting out in the next hour, I need to do something.

"Excuse me!" I flag him down, I know he doesn't have much of a face, but I can still tell that he's annoyed from the lack of progress that his search has brought him.
"Um, it's getting kind of late, and classes will be letting out soon. Can you leave and come back some other time? I'll keep looking for this 'Magician', I promise!"

Which is true, it just won't be very hard for me to find her.

"Okay, this is enough!" he yells, crossing his arms. "You know something, and you're making a fool of me!"
He draws his sword again, pointing it at me.
"I demand that you tell me where Magician is right this instant!"

I raise my hands up in the air, trying to deflect once more.
"W-w-wait! Wait! Listen! I don't know where Magician is right now!"
Also true! It's been at least an hour since the last text from Kaori.
"B-b-but classes are going to be let out soon! And-and!-"

And it's really hard to explain myself while someone is pointing a sword at me!
"A-and it'll be really hard to look for it while there are students everywhere after class! M-maybe you should come back some other day a-and I'll look around in the meantime!"

The monster lets out a low growl and sheathes his sword.
"We'll be back, and next time, I will find it."

With a leap, he takes to the sky and disappears from view.

My knees give way and I fall into the grass.
"That... I think fighting them would have been easier."

My breath is short, and I can feel my heart pounding like a drum.
Or maybe it's just the cell phone vibrating in my pocket. Taking it out, I can see that I just got a text from Kaori.
'Masami, Monsters left, what did you do?'

With more than a little bit of anger, my thumbs start hammering on the virtual keyboard.
'kaori we have to talk right now see you in the occult room'

My hands ball up into fists, and I can feel pangs of annoyance bubbling inside of me. Why did she take something from her Dad when she wanted to go unnoticed?

I need to at least ask her about it. Maybe I should-

>Invite some of your friends to come to this meeting with her, maybe they have questions too
>Like maybe Aiko, or Maeda, they might be good at grilling her for information!

I walk into the Occult club with my bag slung over my shoulder as I enter. Gently, I close the door behind me and lock it.

At the only table in the room sits Kaori. She nervously kneads her hands and twists at her hair as she sits. As she looks up at me, I can tell that she looks as if she's about to cry. She quickly breaks eye contact.

"Kaori, I texted everyone and told them that you're fine and that we're going home after this. I'm not mad at you or anything."
I say that, but I'm actually really mad! No no, I have to remain calm. I got to do that thing Kaori always did to me where she was mad but never really told me that she was.

I sit down at the table across from Kaori. She's still looking away at the ceiling, the walls, everything except for me.

I'm really not good at this confrontational stuff.
"Kaori, what is it they were looking for?"

Sheepishly, Kaori takes something from her lap and sets it on the table.
It's the bracelet that I saw Dad using the other day. If what he was saying is correct, this is one of the three bracelets that Fortune made.

"This is what they're after?"

"Yeah.." Kaori replies, still gazing at the tabletop.

I sigh, getting angry at her when she's like this isn't going to give me any answers. Nor is it going to make her feel any more comfortable.

I'll try to just do that thing Mom does where she acts all calm and spaced out all the time. Yes, that seems like the correct approach here.

"Kaori, I'm still not mad at you."
No reponse.

"But.. Why did you take this? What's so important about it?"
"It's.."

She doesn't finish, she looks back at the table with the same dull expression.
I know exactly what to do, standing up, I walk over to her side of the table and sit down next to her.

"Kaori, is this really important enough to risk yourself to keep it? Why don't you just give it back?"
No response.

"Please, Kaori, why is this important to you?"
"Because.." She struggles with her words for a minute.

"Because it's the only way I can be as strong as you are, Masami."

Wait, but, I'm not very strong at all.
"I don't get it."
"Masami! Don't you realize that you are way stronger than anyone else we know?"

"..Not Ryouta."
"ESPECIALLY Ryouta!" Kaori tone has shifted to that of annoyance rather than sadness.

"Are you kidding? I'm not as strong as Ryouta."
Kaori looks at me as if I've genuinely hurt her by saying that. I decide to change the subject before I offend her any further.

"So, um, how did you take it? I thought there were only a couple of these that were made."
"Oh.. That was easy.. I took them during the first inventory at Fortune. Dad didn't even realize it was gone, at first."

"Hey.. What's so different about that monster I met? He had a name and everything."
Plus he felt really, really strong.

"That was Emillion, and he's one of Dad's bodyguards." Kaori etches at the table with her finger, "All of Dad's bodyguards predate the founding of Fortune."

"Then, why does Fortune want this bracelet? Why do they need it when they have monsters who are that strong working for them?"
Kaori coughs, "The monsters are not working for Fortune. They're working for Dad. Dad is their master. There's a big difference."

I don't see the difference, but I'm not going to question it.
"And.. I think the bracelets are the only way to use the cards powers like you do, Masami. I think the bracelets were made to replicate your powers."

"Are.. are you sure?"
Kaori fumbles with it in her hand, "That's how it's like when I use it. It's like I have superpowers, and.. I don't want to give that away. Not to Dad, at least. Anyone but him."

"..Do you want to talk to Mom about this? She knows a lot about how the cards work. Just show her the bracelet!"
"Um, bracelets. "
"Huh?"

She looks even more guilty than before.
"They're not after me because I took one thing, they're.. sort of after me because I took three things."

okay, sorry for the length of the thread and dropping out in the middle there.

Thanks to everyone who participated tonight. I'm really glad to run this after a long week. Maybe I can run twice this week, but it's iffy because I have an interview this Thursday out of town.

Speaking of which, if I get this job that I'm interviewing for, that will mean that I'll be living in an apartment with only a laptop and a 3G card. Which means the only thing I'll be able to do for entertainment is run quests as I'll be completely unable to play video games! Yay! I guess.

Thank you everyone, let me know what you thought of today's thread. See you around.
