You are a fighter pilot of the 501st Joint Fighter Squadron, and you are currently sitting in a Jeep, next to a snorting, nervous horse, the lunatic SAS trooper mounted on said horse, and the vehicle-sized air of affront rolling off the tiny eye-talian girl standing near the Motor Landing Craft's bow ramp as it surges gamely towards Barin's shoreline at a sedate something something knots.

You look into the back of the Jeep, where The Sanyan is lying, fast asleep, her entire curled-up form buried in your flight jacket. You've started to nounify her - The One Sanyan, to bring them all and in the d'aaaw bind them, or something - because she's been almost completely unresponsive since she fell asleep against you in Eddington Strip's alert shack. When you tried to rouse her up she did that limp thing cats do when they don't want to be picked up, so you settled for carrying her to a borrowed jeep for the ride back to Barin.

The helms... swain-boat-pilot-steery oh who gives a fuck is undergoing some fascinating facial contortions, much like a man who desperately wants to swear and/or attempt homocide, but dares not sully the image of the Royal Navy in front of barbarians such as Italians, Americans and Army pukes (in roughly that order.) He seems to be settling for a ruddy-faced hatebeam broadcast from his faintly vibrating mustache as he glares at the massive bulk of the Hercules, its many, many, MANY engines muttering idly as it oh-so-slowly taxis through the straight seperating Barin from the English shore.

Looks like you've got some time to kill.

Looks like you've got some time to kill.

“Hey,” you say to Paddy, who's patting his nervous steed's neck. The animal doesn't seem to like the feeling of swells beneath his feet. “I was wondering about something.”

“Eh?” he asks cheerfully, leaning forward to rub under the horse's mane.

“Yeah.” You slide your eyes over to the horde of chibitanks, which are sitting stacked atop one another, quite silent, in the rear of the transport. “What in the ACTUAL FUCK was all that shit about?”

“Oh. We were testing the tinytanks out in field-mobile trials. The Russkies were messing with tele-tanks early in the war, I hear, but they needed a command tank a few hundred yards behind it, which wasn't very effective. A witch is a lot better protected and should have better range, so they wanted to see how far Heidi could push, eh?”

You nod, prompting him to continue. “They also wanted to see if the controlling Witch could keep up with a mobile advance, or something like that. And...” Paddy cuts his eyes at the Navy man dramatically, who gives him a squint so salty you can taste it. Paddy smirks and continues without dropping his voice. “After someone tried to kill you at that awards shindig, they decided Heidi and other high-value assets ought to have a bodyguard.”

“Really!?” you snap. “Then why didn't Sa-”

“Nobody figures she needs one, with you around,” Paddy says airily. “Something about an inverted strafing run against surface craft, or something.” He waves this away, clearly unimpressed with this artsy-fartsy airdale shit. “Anyways, yeah, mobility, and stuff, hard to get a Jeep anymore without stealing one and the ground's so soft, so... I found a horse.”

You nod, as if this makes perfect sense and you're not suspicious at all. “And the hunting horn? And the *jacket!?*”

“Neon samurai?” he asks pointedly.

“..... ah,” you say as understanding dawns.

I used to be delighted with how paranoid poor Ghost was that I'd drop some sort of bomb in SWQ that would give him trouble with canon in SWQ '89. But then he revealed super-detailed plans for any and all possible curveballs I could throw at him, and it lost its luster.

... and then he started revealing contingency plans for awful, awful things I'd never in a million years considered doing, and it became scary to contemplate the kind of things he believed me capable of.

You stare into the sullen, brooding overcast that's socking in most of New Anglia as the MLC slowly putters around the Hercules's stern. The insanely massive craft is finally drawing even with Barin's runway. You and Paddy duck with a curse as the propwash from the multiple engines kicks up a sea spray in your eyes.

“What's the deal with that goddamned thing, anyways?” you snap.

“I thought you'd know,” Paddy snorts. “You're the one that made a big ruckus by jumping that shark-plane... thing over it.”

“Yeah, I got kind of busy right after that,” you mention. “All I know is that my folks hitched a ride on it to the award ceremony.”

“They're making noise about it being an anti-submarine initiative,” Paddy says, peeking over the gunwale at the titanic seaplane. “I thought they had that iceberg carrier for that crap, though. And I've got no idea what it does against the Martians.”

“Speed!” the Navy man shouts over the laboring engine of the little boat. “Against the U-Boats you could catch'em coming to or from the sub-pens in Normandy or the North Sea, at least. Little green men don't bother with subs much but with that orbital drop capacity of theirs, there's really nowhere that's safe from a surprise attack.” He shakes his head. “Hey, Yank, you're the one that nailed those motor boats going for that battlewagon, right?” He jerks his thumb at the mighty gunmetal-gray bulk of the California, her masts visible over the rising rocky crags of Barin's shoreline.

I tried doing this with a Tigercat, I can't fly for SHIT upside down. Especially using mouse joystick controls because regular mouse controls try to flip the plane over automatically.

None of this matters though because landing craft in warthunder are apparently made of fucking unobtainium. 400 20mm hispano shells, equal or greater number of .50cal bullets and I just barely managed to set one on fire and NOT kill it. Gaijin plz.

“Eh,” he says, his mustache bristling in acknowledgment. “Nasty little things. They use a hydrofoil. Crossing the pond these days, faster is better.” He jabs his finger irritably at the bulk of the Hercules. “And that thing's a mite faster than any ship, now.”

The MLC grinds to a halt on the sandy beach of Barin, and the ramp drops with a loud splash. “SPAAAAAAARKLE STAAAATION!” the Navy man shouts dramatically. “ERRYONE GIT THE FUCK OFF MY BOAT!”

You grin at Paddy and crank the starter, firing up the Jeep with a nice throaty roar as you gun the accelerator. “TONTO DEFEAT HAIRY WHITE MAN IN PONY RACE TO FRONT DOOR!”

“YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWW” Paddy exclaims as he jumps his steed onto the ramp and charges up the beach. You floor the throttle, the wheels slipping a bit on the wet decking before it lunges clear over the ramp and hits the waterlogged sand with a SPLOOSH! You hear a murmur from the back as Sanya bounces about a little, then falls silent. The Jeep has amazing torque and you're needing all of it to sloooowly claw your way through the thick, cloying sand. Ahead, Paddy's having even less luck with his horse, who's sinking up to its hocks in the sand between each labored footstep. The Navy man is laughing like a lunatic as Luuchini helps him lift each heavy tank, her ears glowing faintly with magic.

Thick smoke starts to pour from the exhaust as you downshift and gun the Jeep for all its worth, the huge, rugged tires clawing deep into the wet sand. Paddy is yodeling at his mount, snapping and snarling something about pure-bred Arabians and desert horses this and fucking useless inbreeding assholes that. You both gain the beach about the same instant, only to discover the soil proper isn't much better for waterlogging. A low-speed chase commences all the way up the path to the walls of the Castle proper, and by the time you've reached the nearest entrance, both of you are out of breath from your inspired and ribald cursing.

“We'll call that one a tie,” Paddy says solemnly, and trots his horse into the side-door of the castle, ducking his head to clear the sill.

You eye the doorway. You look down at your full-sized Jeep.

>maybe if we tilted it... sideways?
>Ditch it, we stole the goddamn thing anyways, lets not keep evidence

After a few minutes of half-heartedly measuring the doorway with your arms, you conclude that even if you got the Jeep through on its side, it would then have to keep sliding down the hallway like that, propelling itself with its wheels against the wall. The little GP Robin used the other night to rampage through the place was just small enough to pull off things like that, but the full-sized deal is a different story.

You face the cold, uncomfortable truth. You. A pilot. Will have to WALK somewhere. With a sigh, you scoop up Sanya's slight weight (she can't weigh more than ninety pounds, soaking wet) and enter the Castle. Truly, you have sacrificed for your country.

You find Sean and Ian lazing about in the otherwise-deserted lounge, surrounded by a faint haze of cigarette smoke. Gently depositing Sanya on a sofa and dragging a spare afghan over her, you flump into a chair and fingergun at them.

“So what've you lazy assholes been up to?”

“Work,” they reply together, then turn a jaundiced look on you. “What about you?”

AFAIK that kind of toe popper is an empty shell casing enclosed inside bamboo, this provides a barrel for pressure to build up. Just baking a .50cal shell until it pops would only result in casing shrapnel (which is still dangerous). Not sure how far the bullet would go.

If it does push for anti-sub duties, it would amount to an ekranoplane with a slightly larger weapon loadout. Then again, I don't think it can stand up much to phonon maser cannons.

You take a deep breath and proceed to quail at the task of summarizing your morning. After a few seconds of withering under the gaze of your comrades, you fall back on the old pilot standby – the checklist. “So, people tried to kill me... four times,” you say, counting the B-17 drone explosion, Kennedy being a cockass afterwards, the Zuuchini's impressive pursuit and, of course, the Russian with the frag grenade. “No, five times,” you amend, remembering the Martian air raid. “Yeah. I spent the morning almost getting murdered or blown the FUCK up, thank you very much. Must've sucked to sit in here doing whatever.”

“Mmm-hmm,” Ian drawls from where he's sprawled in an easy chair. He tilts his newspaper down just far enough to give you The Look over the top. “And how many times were you molested by under-sexed Witches?”

You glance down at Sanya, and cross your arms in a huff. “I won't hear that kind of talk about the adorable... Coss....” you trail off as Ian's statue-still gaze bores a hole through your bullshit. “... only twice.”

“You got your dick stroked.... twice... this *morning,*” Ian says thinly, “while we were actually, you know, training in new technologies. To do our jobs. I really feel for you, Mac.”

Its more like "you can't torpedo that which is not in the water." The idea of the Hercules (in real life) was to avoid U-Boats altogether; in SWQ its more about crossing the Atlantic a lot faster with the most crucial war supplies to reduce the danger window.

The idea's been spawned in my head, but I'm not sure how to go about it that isn't complete shit. So far the best in my mind is "Blackwatch Witches".

It's either going to be a Coven/Cabal of Witches taken by the Blackwatch for their esoteric powers for the express purpose of defending humanity from extra-terrestrial/extra-planar threats.

Or it's going to be about witches from the Royal Highland Regiment, who're either too weak or too proud to pilot strikers and rely on their skill in sword and gun.

“Meh,” Ian says, “why don't you go chug sausage gravy about it, Mister-yanks-your-doodle-daily.” He flips his newspaper back up with a crisp, dismissive 'snap!' The front page has a beautifully-timed picture of a huge, square-jawed fellow standing back-to-back with a short Japanese witch wearing a flight jacket and leather gloves. The witch has just delivered a punch, the motion-blurred suggestion of shrapnel that might've been a flung chair frozen before her. Her furious, intense expression contrasts sharply with the look of pure, savage glee on the huge man's face as he delivers a crushing cross-counter to some poor bastard's jaw. “ST. PETERSBURG SLAUGHTER,” the headline declares exuberantly. “DEMPSY AND PROTOGE CLASH WITH COSSACKS, LEVEL TWO BARS.” You squint across the room to pick out the subhead, “MAKE ANY IRISH JOKES AND I WILL LITERALLY RUPTURE YOU,' SAYS FORMER CHAMPION.”

You lean back in your chair, content to let Ian dig his own grave, for once. “Okay, Professor. What fantastic new toy has the Army bequeathed unto us now?”

The newspaper drops faster than Ian's haughtiness as he leans forward, eager. “Oh, guess. Just fucking guess.”
You look at him blankly for a second as a wicked grin crawls over his face.

“You'll NEVER guess.”

Actually, there were already metal aircraft back then man.

>Its more like "you can't torpedo that which is not in the water."
Anything floating just above the water is fair game though. IIRC planefag said the crappy old (current?) first gen mk14 torpedoes US subs were armed with blow the shit out of martian naval dreadnaughts because the magnetic fuse goes apeshit the moment it gets anywhere near them. Which is fucking hilarious if you know the history of the real torpedoes.

I wonder how long it took them to fix the fuse problems in this universe.

>>36454037
Evergreen Eclipse? It's pretty damn big.

>>36454031
It's not like you have to be high off the ground to drop depth charges. The vast majority were used by boats after all, it's just a matter of setting the fuse to the correct depth. So depth charges are perfectly viable on the Hercules, even more so if you use the smaller spigot mortar versions instead of the big barrels. That would be enough hedgehogs to blot out the sun.

Torpedoes on the other hand wouldn't work, it's just too big and slow. I've seen a instructional video on youtube used to train US naval pilots on how to drop mk13 torpedoes. There is a bewildering array of things you have to account for when trying to torpedo a moving target. If you drop the torpedo too fast the front can become dented and cause it to run in circles. If you drop it at too shallow an angle the torpedo can porpoise out of the water, too sharp and it might even hit bottom. Even things like crosswinds pushing the torpedo sideways after you drop it! They got pretty good at it by the end though, they added breakaway wooden parts to the torpedo so it wouldn't get crushed like a beer can after hitting the water from a 2400 ft drop at 760km/h(!).
>>
>>36454847
All of which is irrelevant because they have not developed ASW torpedoes yet, and if they did, all they'd have to do to launch them is just drop them.

“Hmmm,” you ponder. “They finally added a second set of flight controls so I can take a turn jacking off in the cockpit every now and then?”

“Nnnnno,” Ian says, waving that idea away. “Mere piloting skills don't need refresher courses, why would they retrain me in that?”

You grump at him. “They're eliminating the mostly-redundant gunner position in the Widow and moving the radar-operator up front?”

“Why the hell would I be excited about that?”

“Because you'd finally get to sit on Sean's lap like you've alwa-”

“Make any Irish jokes,” Sean mumbles as he flips over another page in Stars and Stripes, “and I will literally rupture you.”

“We're getting the SHARK PLANE TWO – ELECTRIC BOOGALOO!” you declare, pumping your fists up and down in excitement.

Ian sighs. “Is it even possible for you to envision a world where its not all about you?”

“Even I have nightmares,” you admit cheerfully, and duck a halfheartedly-thrown coaster. You lean back in your seat and reach out to adjust Sanya's blanket a little. Sean notices the motion. “So, how'd it go with the Witches?”

“How you mean?”

Sean gestures at Sanya. “You hared off with Minna this morning, I figured you were on another morale-boosting mission.” He turns to the next page in S&S. “Y'know. In... your style.”

Metal wing spars were pretty common, maybe that's where the term comes from? However ALL-metal aircraft were something of an exception. Some planes still had wooden control surfaces and others used wood for the outer skin. Particularly in the case of Russian and later German planes because of material shortages. Some planes didn't even have a solid skin to begin with and still relied on canvas painted with stuff to make it rigid.

Funny thing is if you use too much steel you'll end up with a plane too heavy to be useful. The Mustang was all metal because it was entirely made of aluminium like the Zero, and both could fly very far on a tank of gas because of this. The P47 was all metal except for the tail control surfaces which were still made of canvas, surprisingly.

“Yeah,” you say, tugging a corner of the blanket over Sanya's head. She mewls cutely and curls up even tighter, vanishing into a little cocoon of catlike warmth. “Went looking for Miyafuji. Found Sanya, instead. Got her sorted out over the whole Waltrude thing. I think it'll stick, this time.” You sigh, and stretch. “As long as she doesn't figure out that we bounced her, that night she almost chewed our tail booms off.”

Sean and Ian blink, then exhange a glance.

“Didn't she already figure that out?” Ian asks.

“She did,” Sean says. “I remember, because she caught on after we lost ourselves in ground clutter. During that last night intercept.” They both turn and look at you, mystified.

“... really?” you say. “What?”

“Wow,” Ian says. “It looks like the repeated cranial traumas have finally taken their toll.”

Sean humphs as he flips to the next page. “Man, he jumped off the goddamn PIER last night. I saw *ice* floating in that water last week.”

“Now there's the question,” Ian says, picking up his newspaper again. “Did the impact with the water do the crucial damage, was it the cold, was it the asskicking the squibs gave him when they caught him aboard, or is forgetfulness to be expected of the brain-damage required to do that stupid shit in the first place?”

“Well...” you sigh, pinching the bridge of your nose. “Yeah, I remember... now.” Maybe the last few weeks HAVE taken their toll – though you'd never admit it, and Ian just sentenced himself to about six dozen snap-rolls. At least. Of course, that begs the question... “Wait, why did she mention it, then?”

“Eh?”

“She specifically mentioned being bounced by friendly night fighters, and how it'd always scare her shitless for a few seconds.”

“Maaaaybe she was opening up to you and dropping the hot-shot-tough-guy pilot act?” Ian opines. “Or maybe she's noticed what a sucker you are for the woe-is-me-pet-me-pretty-please act and she's playing you like a fiddle.” He tsk-tsks and turns to a new page in the paper.

“Meh, I wouldn't worry about it,” Sean says idly, tossing the Stars and Stripes over his shoulder and cracking his neck laboriously.

“Boy, it must be nice to be you, Sean,” you grumple, sliding into your seatcushions a little more and closing your eyes. “Nobody shoots YOU in the groin, nobody tries to crash a drone-ship filled with high-explosives into your goddamn face, and your girlfriend's issues boil down to 'fight-or-fuck.' The girl's a media darling and you're telling me to NOT WORRY about her – her everything? She could destroy me! One well-timed sniffle and I'd be hanging from the ceiling of the hangar bound in safety-wire!”

“Christ A'mighty you're a drama queen-”

“They did it to Mav! They LITERALLY did it to Mav, because she sniffled a bit!”

Sean rolls his eyes as he fishes another bent Lucky Strike out of his pocket. “I know, you idiot. I'm saying you've got to worry even more about Eila.”

The name seems to slip into your veins like liquid mercury, cold and lethal.

“... Elia?”

“Yeah,” he says. “Elia.”

You take a second to process that, and your mouth promptly dries out. Leaning over, you tug back a corner of Sanya's blanket. “Uh... Sanya?” you whisper quietly. She makes a noncommittal sound. “Uh... did you... tell Elia about the bouncing thing?”

“Yes,” someone whispers from about four inches behind you. “She did.”

>However ALL-metal aircraft were something of an exception.

What? No they weren't - not for modern military aircraft of the era, at any rate. Stressed-skin construction was standard by the 30s for most aircraft, in fact. Wooden construction was very much the exception to the rule, such as the Mosquito. Even the goddamned Hurricane switched to a stressed-skin wing by 1939 (while retaining doped linen over the fuselage and control surfaces, because it was an obsolete design in most respects.) You're thinking WWI era, bub.

The cold chill of Certain Doom settles upon you, damping your instinctive urge to bolt like a flushed rabbit. “Hey, Elia,” you rasp from a dry throat.

“Hello, Fiance,” Elia hisses back. “Just what have *you* been up to today?”

“I threw myself on a grenade to save your girlfriend?” you proffer.

“Clearly you fucked it up,” Elia hisses, “because if you had, you'd be dead, and thus safely beyond my reach.” Her hands SLAM down on your shoulders, making you jump a bit. You can feel her breath on your neck as she moves in.

“I spent the morning talking to your mother,” she growls. “We picked out *drapes.* Don't fuck with me, Young. Don't fuck with Sanya.”

“... like, *literally* or-” your voice falters as the Finnish witch literally *growls* into your ear, a feral, gravelly sound. Your shoulders ache as she squeezes with that same frantic strength she used to half-strangle you a few days ago. “If you ever, ever, EVER pull that kind of shit on her again, I will kill you myself,” Elia snarls into your ear. “Do you hear me, Pilot? Do you hear me loud-and-fucking-clear? You'll develop a case of sudden-onset-augering-into-the-fucking-channel, and nobody will ever see a thing.”

You shiver a little as you begin to comprehend why the Russians had their asses chewed off in the Winter War. “B-bkrrrk-” your voice falters as she clamps a forearm across your throat, crushing your windpipe as she presses you tight against her chest.

“They won't see a fucking thing. Not in the dark,” Elia whispers, a dark and terrible wrath licking at the edges of her words. “I even know how I'll do it. Its not hard to make tracers purple, if you know the chemistry. And Barin's got a great library. And nobody will see a fucking thing.”

She releases you, letting you flop onto the chair. You roll on your back, panting for air, but preferring to see your doom as it bears down upon you. Elia's eyes are red-rimmed and full of hate, and she scowls down at you with the second-most ice-cold expression you've ever seen.

Second only to Sakamoto Mio, who's towering right behind her.

>Sanya both aroused and filled with an odd mix of melancholy and arousal as she looks on.

>Elia stifling her moans while looking directly at Sanya, thinking to herself that this will surely either dissuade Sanya from looking at Young as a big brother, but a sexual menace, or dissuade Young from interacting with any of them, since she holds the power in this fucked up relationship.

Elia turns to stalk away, turning her head to keep terrifying, cold eye contact with you for a moment or two longer, and manages to bounce right off Sakamoto like she's made of stone. Elia visibly starts in shock, staring up at the taller witch as she turns even paler than normal. Sakamoto's only motion is to reach for her eyepatch and lift it up, revealing the eldritch purple light of her magical eye.

“I spy,” Sakamoto says, her voice dangerously soft, “with my little eye... someone who's reporting straight to her quarters, and not leaving until further notice.”

Elia stumbles back a few steps, emitting funny-sounding noises.

“That was a direct order, Flying Officer,” Sakamoto says. “I'd say get out of my sight, but I can SEE THROUGH BUILDINGS, BITCH, SO GET THE *FUCK* OUT OF MY REACH BEFORE I SNAP THIS SWORD OFF IN YOUR ASS!” she bellows, the slender Japanese witch managing to fill the room as her rage explodes from her diaphragm with terrifying abruptness, her sword already leaving the scabbard. Elia seems to fly backwards, propelled by the force of Mio's outburst, and quits the room so fast you feel a faint breeze – or maybe that's just all the air molecules near Mio getting the hell out of her way.

“Whuu?” the lump of blankets and jacket on the couch says blearily. “Chto? Chto? Kto kričit?”

Sakamoto slowly untangles Sanya from the blankets and ruffles her hair a bit. “Wakey-wakey, pilot! Did you have a good nap?”

Sanya stretches, arching her back and yawning rather catlike. “Daaaah~” she answers, still blinking the sleep away. “I feel much better...”

“Ready for a mission?” Sakamoto asks.

“Wha!?” Sanya exclaims, looking around blearily before grabbing your wrist to peer at your watch. “Oh no, I slept twelve hours-”

“No, no,” Mio says, patting her head to calm her. “Its just about noon, kiddo. But things are socked-in still, and we've got an urgent mission.” She turns to your crew. “For you, too.”

Sanya seems to brighten at this. “I'll have wingmen!?”

“That's the whole point of the Joint Wing,” Mio says, her tone dry enough to smear jelly on. “To increase the safety of witches and regular aircrew alike, yes?”

Sakamoto fills you in during your third boat-ride of the day, back to Eddington strip where your Widow is parked. With the socked-in weather shutting down air operations, the ground war in England has rumbled to a stalemate. The squids in the London Pocket have dug in hard and repeated close assaults have been unable to budge them. The landing forces on the southern beaches are similarly stubborn, due more to a lack of English armor support than anything – there aren't enough heavy assault tanks to really make a push against Martian defenses, and the tank witches are simply exhausted. That seems to be the common refrain – exhausted witches. Even the artillery duels have tapered off; the legendarily accurate (and most likely semi-guided, or so the experts say) Martian rocket artillery seems to have met its match in the recently-arrived American artillery divisions; lethally-accurate artillery duels have silenced the Martian tubes through sheer attrition, but friendly forces are simply out of shells, and Martian orbital drops have been disrupting manufacturing lines in the 'States. Even the Navy is out of the picture, following the big scrap a few days back – the war has quite suddenly gone 'quiet.'

“Hey,” Ian grumps from the back of the little launch, where he's manning the tiller. “Hate to interrupt, but now that you've explained everything for the idiots who're too busy jumping off piers and towers and things to read newspapers, mind explaining what the hell they want us for?”

“Last night the Squids started jamming the English coastal radar network,” Mio says, tapping her foot against the boat's bottom.

“The fuck you say?” Sean says, giving her a doubtful look.

“Honest,” Mio says. “They're aiming some kind of incredibly focused, very high-powered radiation sources at our antennas – ALL our antennas. They've tried switching between unused antenna sites with the truck-mobile equipment, but they're catching on pretty quick.”

“So we're gonna go blast those emitters?”

“No,” Sakamoto says with a frown. “They've already had a go at that – some secret missile or bomb they won't tell me about that they're launching from Heinkels – and apparently they're either moving around a lot, or surrounded by too much AA. We're sure they're going to either attempt a retreat from England or a landing of reinforcements before the weather breaks, and they're hell-bent on ensuring we don't interrupt it.”

“What about airborne sets?” Sean asks. “On the Wellingtons?”

“That's what we're using,” Mio confirms with a smile. “And we know they're going to gun for them, hard. Which is where you come in.”

The problem with the EilaxSayna relationship is that Sanya is too afraid of losing Eila to tell her what she wants and Eila is too unobservant that Sanya would much prefer pettings than aggressive grabass.

>What? No they weren't - not for modern military aircraft of the era, at any rate.
Well yeah you can narrow it down in a variety of ways. The top of the line stuff was entirely (or just about) made of metal, but that only occupies a narrow slice at the top

All-metal DESIGNS were fairly common for the high-performance stuff like fighter aircraft. But from what I've read though putting those designs into practice was pretty hard, particularly in regards to finding the aluminium. The US and Britain were well supplied, but the Axis powers and Russia had to make do with what they had. So a lot of production aircraft went into service with wooden parts replacing what should have been metal, or were specifically designed to use wood because of the metal shortage.

Results were... mixed. You have success stories like the Mosquito, but the LaGG-3 for instance was a pretty crap plane in terms of pilot mortality. So much so that the pilots actually nicknamed it the "varnished guaranteed coffin" because it was mostly made of wood. Pretty grim. And material shortages could affect weapons too. Late in the war Japan ran out of high quality steel and some of their cannon amunition had to be loaded with less powder or the guns would be damaged.

I fell down a WW2 history rabbit hole long ago and it's all Fap Angel's fault.

>>36455501
One rather scary problem with canvas controls is that if they aren't built properly or get damaged air can get inside and inflate the canvas. When the canvas balloons it can rupture or just get ripped off by the windstream leaving you with no controls. Fun!

It was her choice. Although you're right in that her having few friends has made her terrified of losing Eila, which creates the problem of her not wanting to set boundaries for fear of being abandoned. Without speaking up Eila is ignorant of Sanya's feelings and Sanya is unable to really get a chance to decide what she is comfortable with.

Mio continues to sketch out the details during the short drive back to Eddington strip – in the same jeep you stole earlier, you note. The “little” airstrip has already been cleared, the bomb-holes patched with hastily bulldozed fill or covered over with pierced-steel-planking. A number of aircraft are lined up near the ramp, technicians and fuel trucks bustling every which way. You pick out a Mustang, ammo belts being loaded into its four guns, and at least a few sets of Strikers being given pre-flight warmups on portable stands.

“The briefing's in the Alert Shack,” Mio says, leading the way. You walk back in, wincing slightly at the memory of groin trauma so recently suffered here. The cots have been dragged into rough rows in front of a map-board sparsely decorated with a few scattered red pins and yarn-strings. The only visible occupant is sitting on a cot, his leather-clad back and a faint column of cigarette smoke the only visible things in the poorly-lit room.
“Eh? Are you the briefing officer?” you ask.

“... you're pretty good,” Frank Luke says in his characteristic gravelly grump.

“... uh,” you reply, suddenly very, very unhappy with this whole everything.

“But you'll never expect this,” he says, swinging his legs over the cot as he spins to face you, puffing on a freshly-lit stogie.

You try to stay silent, but you know there's no way you'll out-wait Luke – not when he's got a target in his sights.

“... yooou saw the wisdom in beer-based fire-suppression systems?” you venture.

“Long time no see, honey,” a familiar voice murmurs from beside you. You turn and find yourself staring Tits in the... tits. And such tits they are, straining against the thin, taut fabric of a nylon swimsuit as they yearn for freedom. You follow those wonderful curves up to the finely-shaped collarbones, the delicate and highly nibbleable neck and finally up to the FIST

Distantly you hear Luke laughing like the old grizzled scavating hyena bastard he is as someone lifts you by your shirt-front and shakes you around a bit. When your consciousness finally slows to a manageable RPM, you manage to make out the fantastic features of Charlotte.

“The HELL did you do to my Luuchini?” she snarls, giving you another shake. “Just what the HELL did you do?”

“... listen, I can explain-”

“No,” Charlotte says. “No, you really can't.” In the background you hear Luke wheezing as he finally runs out of air, and a faint thump he falls off the cot. You roll your eyes at Sakamoto, but she just shrugs in a no-I-think-you've-got-this-one-coming gesture.

“Listen the crazy wop tried to run me over with a bulldozer okay, so whatever's going on between us, I think we can call it even-”

“No, no, I know about all that shit, my problem is she's starting to act like YOU!” Charlotte snarls, giving you another violent shake.

“Fat chance,” you snort. “That'd mean she's getting kills!”

Charlotte's fist flies back so fast you've barely got time to squeal before it comes screaming down towards your face.

Apparently your limits on what constitutes acceptable shenanigans is far too restricted compared to the standards of the time, if Chuck can get away with throwing a handful of .50 cal bullets into the lit stove of an occupied tent and not be charged with attempted murder.

You dodge the blow with the finely-tuned reflexes of a combat aviator. Unfortunately, combat aviators are never taught the basics of CQC, so your swift reaction is simply to adopt the fetal position as swiftly as possible. This results in your knees slamming into Charlotte's ass, who's already leaning over to accost you. She ends up flying forward into a roll, and pulling you along for the ride. You end up atop of her, somehow, and your warriors instincts scream one thing – ATTACK.

“BHLEARRRF” you wail, batting at Charlotte wildly. She hastily counter-attacks and soon you're both whapping at each other, faces turned to the side to avoid each other's “blows.” This only ends when you're forcibly lifted off Charlotte by her brother, who's audibly trying to stifle snickers and not doing a good job of it. Somewhere in the background Luke is desperately gasping for breath between pained, high-pitched giggles.

“I hate you,” you rasp between gasps, feeling the ache growing in your jaw where Charlotte connected. “I hate you so much. It's unreal.”

“That's what you get for stealing my schtick, asshole,” Luke replies, wiping tears from his eyes.

“The hell did I ever steal from you?”

“Dual-wielding pistols while riding a motorcycle?” he asks, shaking his head. “Never try to one-up me, son. My vengeance is swift and terrible.”

You grump as you gaze around the room, which is filling up fast. In addition to Sanya, Heidi has shown up, and Chuck, and Charlotte (of course,) and what you presume is Luke's crewmen. In the back of the room is an older woman that seems familiar, but you can't place right away.

“Looks like everyone's here,” Luke says. “Time for the brief-”

The phone rings. Luke snatches it out of the crade. “Ey?” With a sigh of exasperation, he gives the magneto of the field phone a few quick turns, and applies it again. “One more time?”

He listens.

He hangs up.

Is it safe to say that, short of actually killing a fellow soldier (who was of the same rank or higher than you, superiors summarily executing subordinates for doing stupid shit or being a fuckup being an accepted thing), people can get away with a lot of shit, and Witches even more so?

So long as someone higher up in the chain of command isn't pissed off at you for the stupid shit you just did, you can probably get away with it so long as there isn't evidence for the MP's to find?

Because that's what it feels like happened during WW2, and more so during the Martian War.
