The sun is peeking through the trees when you wake, rays glittering off of dew as you stretch.

There's a wolf snoring lightly at your side, a harpy tucked into her own wings on your back, and a moth drool on your shirt.
You are a giant spider.

This is your life now. It'd probably be more surreal if you didn't wake up like this every day.

No, that's not fair.
You only picked up Nin a few days ago. And Jin isn't always here. Just, y'know, most of the time.

Whatever. It's fine. Your name is Lyra- Goddammit. Note. Ask Mom or Dad for name. Underline. Highlight. Anyway, your name is Lyra somethingsomething, and you are an Arachne.

You're also a little hungry, a lot lazy, and still kind of messy from last night's dinner. Which means that you have all sorts of options open- The day is unfolding before you, blazing with potential! With purpose.

You're going to eat, you're going to clean up, and then you're going to kidnap a half-elf and drag them into a monster infested forbidden forest.

All in all, a superior day to eight hours of office work.

>Hop in the bath, start warming it up. Your friends will probably wake up fast without you.
>Crawl to the dinner pile, sate your hunger.
>It doesn't matter how early it is. Wake up your parents- You've gone without a last name long enough.
>Other (?)

Snacking in bath, ho!

We can always use "Thunderbreaker" as name.

As if we need a name, we earn our own, thats how adventurers do it.

So someone else calls us that.

Actually, I didn't remember that.
>>
So, important question:

If moths only live so long, do they hit puberty/adulthood earlier?
>>
>>36430330
Nin's legend will live forever.

Though I'm curious about that myself. She's the youngest, but she's the most mentally mature of Lyra's girls.
>>
>>36430330
Probably.
Can't make much of a difference, considering how fast it apparently happens to longer lived arachne.
>>
>>36430347
>but she's the most mentally mature
I think thats more a matter of personality than maturity, its become sadly rare, but Jin does show sometimes that she is a lot less airheaded than she sometimes appears in her hype.
>>
>>36430264
>Pretentious
Pretty typical for adventurers, really.
>>
>>36430347
I dont know about that.
Nin does the whole kid thing where bothering people = feelings sort of thing.
Sheszka might be more mature, but shes wrapped up in the whole pack mentailty
>>
Guys.
I want to go to the village.
For multiple reasons actually.
1: I want to sneak in through the river and startle people with our breath holding
2: I want to interact with the higher up at the guild who wants to know who the fuck that lyra person is in some way
3: I want to get elle that spindle.
>>
>>36430365
Nin is precocious. She's seems more knowledgeable for her age and species, but she's still immature.
>>
>>36430525

Elle never asked us for a spindle, though REQM might put that in later. I agree with wanting to go to town and I think that is next on the list. We want to grab Lann and bring her and Nin to the forest waterfalls.

I also still really, really want to check out the crystal mine.
>>
>>36430525
We will go the village to get Lann anway. And I have no interest in any of these things except the last.

>>36430547
Which is what I meant with personality rather than actual maturity. She read a lot and has a certain drive, but beyond that she isn't mature at all.
>>
>>36430573
>really want to check out the crystal mine.
We can just ask the miners about the mine.
>>
>>36430525
>I want to interact with the higher up
Is he even still around? I would assume he left after his checkup.

Bath and breakfast can wait. You haven't got a name, and you aren't going to stand for it!

You storm forward, and you would be angrily stomping if you weren't in a nest with a vaguely soft floor. You burn out your indignation pretty fast though.

Mostly because Mom and Dad aren't in the nest, so you're just kind of pumped up and feeling sort of silly.

You sidle side to side on your legs, humming and rocking Nin.

What kind of names do elves even have? Something silly with a pile of apostrophes, or something unpronounceable? Dad's name is Erics, though. Maybe humans have weird names? Lann is a half-elf, but you don't know what side gave her her name.

And all the monster names are short. Nin and Jin and Lyra and Elle and Sara.

Are last names done by family? Or ancestors?
You don't really know anyone's last name.

You're pacing near the edge of the nest when Dad's head peeks over the side.

He barely manages a startled squeak before you grab him.
"AH HA!"
"GODS! I- Lyra?"
"WHAT IS MY NAME"

Dad puts his hands up.
"Your name is Lyra."

"Ah."

You pull him into the nest proper and set him down, while Mom crawls up behind him, barely containing her laughter.
"Sorry, yes? I didn't mean to yell."
"That's, uh, That's fine. How did you forget your own name?"

"I didn't forget my- A last name. Surname, yes? Do I have a surname?"
"Do you want one?"
"I am fairly certain that is not how names work."

Mom has failed. She has begun to laugh.
"Well, I mean that there is more than a few you could have."
"What?"
"Most monstersfolk don't use them, of course. But Arachne have a sort of tradition for it? And the elves do as well, of course."

I was actually surprised they have family names here, thats kinda unusual for a "medieval-ish" setting.
>>
Asking about names!
Writing!
>>
>>36431097
>They asked us for a last name though!
Yeah, thats what makes me wonder. No one ever introduces himself with their last name, so much that before Lann asked we didn't even consider having one.
>>
>>36431112
They at least had names like "Bill of That Village O'er Yonder". So Lyra could be "Lyra Spiderbuttinthattreeoverthere".
>>
>>36431131
That were descriptions to distinguish them from other people of the same name, not something people called themselves.
>>
>>36431158
Unless they were famous for some reason and could expect someone would recognize the "Bill of whatever-ville".
But it is actually unusual they would have surnames, come to think of it.
Maybe that old human empire had some civil bueraucracy?
>>
>>36431158
Which turned into surnames. Come on, Smith, Black, and so on.
>>
>>36431182
>>36431158

>>36431129
>>36431112
Elves, at least, have noble families, right?
It would stand to reason they would have something to seperate themselves
>>
>>36431158
That's how last name came to be formed.
Johnson = Son of John.
Smith = dat nigga be the James that is a smith.
>>
>>36431236
>>36431257
Guys, everyone knows that. That happened centuries later, when civil bueraucracy demanded surnames for tax registration and similar, thats why I said its unusual for a "medieval-ish" society.

>>36431250
>Elves, at least, have noble families, right?
Noble families had family names for way longer, but dad isn't from one if I remember right, since his mom wanted some social moving upward from her mage son.
>>
>>36431305
You did have patronyms for longer, so maybe the humans use that?

Nin looks cute there,

Lyras head and torso look awful. Her ears are way too large, they are "slightly pointed" The shoulders are way too broad combined with the lack of bust makes her look like a guy. The face should probably be a lot rounder too

You settle down.
For a given value of settling, and a given value of down, of course.

"Everything."
"Pardon?"
"Tell me everything, yes."
"Uh-"

Your mom interrupts, red-eyed from too much laughter.
"Start with the elves, dear."
"Sure. So, the elves- Well, the elves of the isle, anyway-"
"The isle?"

"The elven country is on an island. Sort of."
"That very specific, yes."
"Do you even know what an island is?"
"Of course I do!"

"Well, there's a land bridge."
"Then it... isn't an island?"
"It disappears with the tide."
"So it's a part-time island then."
"Fine- I- Fine, Just fine."

You smile.
"So, the elves of the part-time island...?"
You gesture for him to continue, while wearing a matching grin with your mother.
"The families- Well, The richer families started to own more and more land. So they started considering themselves nobles of sorts, in the same manner as human lords, though they'd never admit to it."
"Ah. So they started to keep names, so people would know how important they were, yes?"

He smiles wryly.
"That's pretty much spot on. Most of them named themselves after their manors, or after their lands."
"... Wouldn't most of those be named after them in the first place?"
"They're a little overly proud of themselves."
"I think that goes beyond pride, yes."

He snorts.
"And that is one of the reasons I am here."
Mom laughs, and sits down next to you, throwing an arm around your shoulders. You readjust your sleeping moth, and she curls a little further in your arms, away from the sun.
>>
>>36431567
"Well then, dearheart, Now I can tell you about the arachne, yes?"
You nod. Dad sits a bit further back, apparently relieved that his half of the story is done.
"Yes, yes. There aren't many arachne, yes? And we tend to live, well, wherever there is room."
"Yes."

"And we are long lived, yes? So, to make it fast- faster, maybe, for people to recognize others, we use our parents names."
"Mother's or father's?"
"The mother's mostly. It's up to the child, in the end. Many don't bother."
"Then your name is?"

"Nialla Selenasdottir, yes."
"Hmm. And Dad's?"

He makes a face.
"Erics of Firescarn."

Because her pack obviously contains more than wolves. Otherwise we would have to do:

Her Highness Lyra Niallasdottir of Firescarn, Thunderbreaker and Bane of Scales, Master of the Forge, Shaper of Earth and Caller of fire. Queen of the forest, Unifier of the tribes, Alpha of wolves, friend of harpies, protector of moths and ruler of all monsters of the grand council.

You consider it for a moment.
A few moments.

Maybe you just sit quietly for a few minutes, enjoying the mornings breeze. No-ones going to judge you.

In any case, you take the time to consider your words before you speak.
"Hmmm. I think.... I think I will just use Lyra, yes?"

Mom bursts out laughing.
She does that a lot. It's not really that funny, Mom. Mom, stop. Mom.

"Not like that! I mean- Gah. I will use more if it's appropriate, yes? When I need it."
"Like when she announces herself to her subjects."
"yes, Like when I- What."

"Lyra Niallasdottir of Firescarn, Queen of the Forest and Protector over All-"
"No No No No-"
"Spearwielder, Dungeonbreaker! Friend of Oakring, Savior of Moth Children-"
"Nanananananan I can't hear you-"
"Rebuilder of the Lost, Restorer of the Ancient-"

Mom is having a fit. Dad is staring. Nin is waving her arms with every pronouncement, and trying to climb you for a better vantage point.
You are trying to not exist, but you've been unsuccessful so far.

"I think some of those aren't words, little one."
"Queens can make up words if they want!"
Mom nods sagely.
"You will need a great deal of practice to say all that with one breath, yes?"

Nin crosses her arms and nods.
"Fear not! I shall be ready for the queens ascension!"
"Of course."

Still existing.

This has to end. You can't take any more.

You stand slowly, rising to your feet- There is a inevitable feeling to the way you move, like watching a glacier bear down upon something. Slow, but unstoppable.

Nin pauses as you grab her, two hands pinning her arms to her sides and drawing her in front of you.
"Lyra?"

Your face is frozen. Immobile. No hint of emotion crosses your visage as you advance on the pool.
"Lyra? What are you- Eeeee-"

You step into the bath without slowing, dipping the moth into the cool water- Your legs ignite benath you, and there's a flurry of bubbles churning the placid surface as it begins to heat around you.

Nin sputters. You let the act break, and smile ever so sweetly at her.
"You are my responsibility, yes?"
"Wha-"
"So of cooooourse I must make sure you are presentable."

You dunk her again, pulling her up with one hand, the other reaching for a rag.
And then you set about scrubbing the little moth.

She protests a little, but really, there's no way way out of this.

You clean her thoroughly, delicately washing her hair, behind her ears, running your hands over her antennae. She settles eventually, demanding a cloth of her own.

And then she grabs hold of your hair, pulling you down so she can wash you.
>>
>>36433449
Cute!
>>
>>36433449
Jin wakes up at some point, floating her way to the waterfall and splashing beneath it. Sheszka joins you shortly after- She takes one look at Nin's attempts and joins in, scrubbing away at your shell.

Jin returns from her shower and joins in as well. You let yourself sink a little lower as your friends scrub away.
It's kind of like a massage.

As much as you'd like to sit in a hot tub all day, you do have plans. Kind of.
You have general guidelines, with large blank spots that will probably wind up filled in with 'keep Nin out of trouble' or 'Carry sleeping monsters everywhere'.

Maybe you're getting too predictable?

this is too much for me anon.
>>
>>36433823
I don't think she would react any different to that. From her perspective we are all still children anyway.
>>
>>36433879
Mom knows that we are very fast learners. Hell, we are even starting to sprout our own mosquito bites on our chest now. It would be fair game to ask her when we start bringing males over for the first time.I just want to see all of the spaghetti that she would spill trying to explain it while being cordial to our "guest"
>>
>>36433929
Then the dawning horror of realizing she should have been watching out for the girls surrounding Lyra.
>>
>>36434071
wanting to see mom's spaghetti is one thing, but actually pairing us with people is another.
You lewdplagueguy. I can't think of any good words for infectee.
>>
>>36434071
Poor Nialla, tries to keep her daughters pure, and lewd mothbutts steal her handholding innocence
>>
>>36434118
What?
>>
>>36434118
Lewdie?
>>
>>36434130
we're like, a month old.
No actual pairings for years and years and years.
>>
>>36434118
Who said that we wanted to pair with anybody? I want ADVENTURE!And subtle ways to beat her that are not combat related.
>>
>>36434141
While I like the idea of no pairings for years. Its been made clear very explicit that arachne and all monsterkin we met so far, mature way faster than humans. We are in puberty. Of course, if it goes after moms will we won't be having pairings until we are at least 200
>>
>>36434167
I am pretty sure we've gotten word of god that romantic stuff won't be coming up for years according to normal monster growth patterns
I will cut you if you ask me to go digging through all the fucking threads for exact quotes
>>
>>36434071
Silly anon. Remember how Lia told us how often she ran away with mom for days? Until she couldn't walk anymore, indeed.
She knows the harpybutt.
>>
>>36434178
Its in the ask.fm, and its not "romantic stuff" its "getting children", which isn't at all the same thing.
>>
>>36434197
I will also cut you if you insist on relationships before age of sexual maturity
>>
>>36434206
I don't insist on anything, but you should realise Lyras sexual maturity will be in a few months at the latest, we are already in puberty.
>>
You might not have a plan, per say, but you do have intentions.

You gather up your friends- even Jin is mostly awake, despite the daylight.
It's a start.

At this point, you could make the trip with your eyes closed. Figuratively. You'd walk into a tree, or get your skull caught on something if you actually closed your eyes.

What you're trying to say is that you keep your eyes open as you walk.

It doesn't take long to reach the ruins- There's no doubt in your mind where Mom and Dad will be spending the day. You smile to yourself as you walk.

A wave of your hands as you pass through the shattered walls of the city, and the arch of a gate starts to form up again, pieces of rock running together, casting a twisting shadow over head. Nin watches in awe as the twin pieces meet overhead, leaving a perfect gateway standing in your wake.

You laugh, and keep walking.

You can keep doing this. You can do this as much as you want. You're a giant spider, it's not like anyone's going to say otherwise.
Your smile grows just a bit wider.

You keep it up as you leave the ruins, the stones of the road evening beneath your feet. They neatly fit together, snipping free the grass and weeds growing between them.

You might be a little tired as you plod the last bit of distance to town.
Maybe you went a bit overboard.
Maybe there should be somebody to tell giant spiders otherwise.

You're almost there now. Hmmmm- How to go about this?

>Inform the gate guard you're hear to abduct Lann.
>Sneak into town?
>Just go in the regular way.
>Other (?)

Sorry about that, I took a minute to eat there.
>>
>>36434278

They want us to do this the proper way.

Ask the gate guard for Lann. Then do>>36433608
Its the perfect crime. Nobody would ever expect that!
>>
>>36434278
>Inform the gate guard you're hear to abduct Lann.
sneaking would be fun, but since they have apparently strict regulation, I don't want the guards to get into trouble.

>>36434278
>>Inform the gate guard you're hear to abduct Lann.
We are a giant spider.

Haha. No, we just need to take Sara with us to give us mana.

I vote to throw this in with whatever option we pick.
>>
>>36434278

Assuming it's one of the guards you know and vice versa.
>>
>>36434349
I'll second that

This specifically >>36433608
If you please

>>36434349
I'm against it, vote for it properly or not at all.

Voting dosen't work like that anon.

Not everything that is funny a sa joke to make between updates is a thing that should actually happen, this is one of them.
Its just harassing someone for no good reason.
>>
>>36434278
>>Inform the gate guard you're hear to abduct Lann.
>>Sneak into town?
Inform the guards, then leave, and go in the river to sneak in.

It's not civilized if you don't tell someone before you sneak in to kidnap them.
>>
>>36434372
Oh yeah?

>>36434278
>>36433608
I second this action because

>>36434372
Doesn't like it.
>>
>>36434385
>Voting dosen't work like that anon.
Neither does it with "I vote to ignore that actual winning vote and do what I want"
I didn't vote against it, I just wanted to express that putting stuff like that on other peoples votes isn't done.
>>
>>36434278
>Inform the gate guard you're here! to abduct Lann.

Calmly and politely informing the guards of our intent to kidnap an adventurer.
Now all you have to do is apologize and I'll make you all honourary Canadians.
Writing!
>>
>>36434475
Yes, multiple votes.
He said "put this on the actually winning option". And thats just silly.
Thats why I said, vote for it normal, if you want it. And if enough would have also voted for it, then it could have been combined.

It wasn't so the point is moot anyway.

Further proof that Lyra is a self insert.

You head down the hill, aiming for the opening in the fence. For once, you don't recognize the guards- The old man is there, at least.

You're fairly certain that he'll die in that chair. You've never seen him leave it.

The guards stand straighter as you approach, which is probably the standard response when approached by four monsters. The old man is already starting to smile.

Alright, Lyra. Time to make your move.

"Good afternoon, yes!"
There's a moment of confusion as you wave to them, both guards blinking. One is tall, fresh-faced, short cropped black hair with a crossbow in his hands. The other is a bit shorter, scruffy looking with brown hair and a beard starting to grow back. He's got a spear in his hands, though to be honest it's nowhere near the size of your own.

You stop yourself from making the obvious joke and wait with a smile.

"Uh. Good afternoon, Miss?"
"Lyra, yes."
Your hand is already moving to Nin's face.
"Lyra Niallasdo-mmgmgrmmgmgmgnn-"

The old man has begin to laugh.
The smaller guy has started to look between you and the moth, eyes flicking slowly from oen to the other. You're still smiling.
"Is she okay?"
"She thinks she is a herald. And tries to announce me everywhere I go. Her name is Nin, This is Sheszka. And this one is Jin, but she lives in town, yes?"

"Uh. Alright, then. And what are you looking for in Oakring today, miss?"
"Do you know Lann? Half elf, adventurer, archer?"
"Of course."

"I was planning on kidnapping her, yes?"
>>
>>36435095

The old guy is wheezing now, bending double in his chair, trying his best not to fall out. You've kept your face even, but your smile is starting to spread.

"Uh- I- No, I- You can't do that, miss."
"She is very small, yes? It would be easy. I think I am quite capable."

He's holding up his hands now, trying to stop the conversation.
"No, That's- It's against the rules. The laws."
"What? Why? I have told you what I am doing, yes? I thought about sneaking into town, but I thought that might be rude."
"Sneak into- How would you even-"
"I can hold my breath for a long time, yes. I think I could just walk under the river into town."

"Okay, no, That's just-"
"Very rude, yes. That is why I am here. Can I kidnap Lann now?"
"No, you can't just- You can't kidnap Lann."
"Fine. Is abduction okay? May I abduct Lann?"

The old man has failed. He's lying on the street now.

"No- No. You can't abduct or kidnap or steal or enslave or hijack or anything else!"
"Really?"
"Yes!"
"Can I visit her then?"
"FINE."

There's a minute of writing in a thick pad of paper, and you help the old man back into his chair. He shakes your hand, they wave you through, and you march through the streets of Oakring, triumphant.

A ha, loopholes! We can Shanghai her, if we leave by river!
