The Holy Grail War. An relatively obscure event by Magi standards hosted in the far east, originating from almost two hundred years ago. Hosted by the Tohsaka and Einzbern families, the former a relatively new Magus family seeking to earn their name utilizing the Holy Grail. The latter a family with over a thousand years work behind their name, forced to work with the fledgling families of the Tohsaka and Makiri.

The Makiri's techniques once employed, were almost discarded by the other two families after the failed first attempts to utilize the Grail. Now a dying family with little to it's name, it desperately grasps for the cup that can grant it's wish, lest it's short history be extinguished.

However, although the Holy Grail was set in place for and by these three families, the ritual itself required seven participants. This is where you come in. You are a participant in the Fourth Holy Grail War, a soon-to-be Master fighting for the omnipotent wish granting device. The question is, who are you, and why are you here?

>You are a well established Magus from a long-line of Magi, joining in the Holy Grail War to only further emphasize your Families' power and superiority. Backed by your strong Magical Crest, you will likely be the strongest Magus in this Holy Grail War.

>You are a fledgling Magus, shamed constantly for your thin blood, you had taken a risk. Joining the Holy Grail War after obtaining a relic, which could be utilized as a catalyst for summoning a Servant.

>You are a Freelancer Magi, participating simply out of curiosity rather than dedication to family. You are in possession of several techniques and abnormal Magecraft techniques, but your real strength is your information gathering. Even as you're entering Japan now, you have information on all the suspected Masters in the war.

(Note, I retain the right to veto anything which comes of the following. Anything too absurd but possible, will result in several penalties on the character.)

How likely would it be to have someone stumble upon a simple kind of magic in the Nasuverse?

Because that might be interesting. Some guy who accidentally found a spell and knows fuck-all about magic. Even less than Shirou.
He knows only this single spell. And it's not swording.
>>
>>36428969
I was sort of thinking of something similar.
>>36428935
I'm not familiar with the Nasuverse, but is it possible to accidentally be a magician without intention? That might be fun, give us a bit of more mundane special abilities (intellect+physical strength/power) and drop us in with a single kind of spell/just a hint/notion of magic, make us try and work things out on our own.
>>
>>36428935
>>You are a fledgling Magus, shamed constantly for your thin blood, you had taken a risk. Joining the Holy Grail War after obtaining a relic, which could be utilized as a catalyst for summoning a Servant.

I like backing the underdog.

There's a case of it in Fate/Stay Zero. Guy had no clue, accidentally summoned a Caster.
>>
>>36428969
Imagine winning the lottery ten times in a row, that's the sort of luck you're springing there.. Even Shirou was taught by Kiritsugu. Ryuunosuke Uryuu, the master of Caster in Fate/Zero even had a spellbook made by his parents, on top of that his Servant was afflicted negatively because of that as well.
>>
>>36429031
But someone did invent the most basic spells at some point. Shouldn't they occasionally be re-invented by random people?

I see your point, though.
Voting for fledgling magus. Don't think we could play the information dude properly.
>>
>>36429031
>>36428994
Then I guess I'll vote for

You are in possession of several techniques and abnormal Magecraft techniques, but your real strength is your information gathering. Even as you're entering Japan now, you have information on all the suspected Masters in the war.
If this isn't an edgelord or these connections are of the shady/criminal kind.
If they are/MC is, then
>>You are a fledgling Magus, shamed constantly for your thin blood, you had taken a risk. Joining the Holy Grail War after obtaining a relic, which could be utilized as a catalyst for summoning a Servant.
I expect the first option only says likely the strongest because of self-confidence and skewed self-image.
>>
>>36429030
On top of being from a Magus background, shown by the book from his parents, the successful ritual on top of that was a complete fluke.

So in the end, it's honestly not the sort of choice I'm looking to QM for in this quest. Especially considering this isn't as relaxed as the Fifth Holy Grail War.

>>36429068
For Freelancer, think more along the lines of Aoko, Natalie or to a lesser extent Touko. Essentially a Magus with connections and odder abilities that doesn't associate as much with the Clocktower.
>>
Alright, since there doesn't seem to be any votes, calling it for Fledgling Magus.
>>
>>36428969
>How likely would it be...

At the very least, it's not impossible. Thaumaturgical techniques find their basis in breathing and walking, and some people just instinctively learn the absolute perfect method of breathing and walking when they're children. Even if they never learn anything about magic, they usually end up doing it by accident at least once and dismissing it as coincidence. Needless to say, this is not the kind of person who ends up in a Grail War.
>>
>>36429205
Yay

You are Lynette Arkell, fourth generation of your family line. With little to your name but a will and a barely existent Magical Crest, you decided to gamble your life and your family name on the Holy Grail War.

Shoulder screeching in pain as you heft the large black bag filled with your various tools and relic you face out into the bustling airport. Despite your mouth being as dry as the Sahara you swallow down whatever may be there. Clutching the small black box containing the relic you managed to obtain in your time during the Clocktower.

Almost kicking yourself for reminding yourself about throwing away the entire tuition fee for the Clocktower by pawning off your entire families' belongings, you shake your head and attempt to focus. Deep breath in. Deep breath out.

But you had a chance to win. And that meant you could shove it to that arrogant fuck of a lecturer back in the Clocktower, and all of the thick blooded snobs who looked down on you. Your fingers turn white as you grip the relic's container harder, the one thing that could win you this war was inside it.

Sliding into a Taxi, you scrunch yourself up into the corner. Hands trembling as you open up the the container once again, to reveal a...

Cao Cao from the Three Kingdoms Era. The hair was the hair he sliced off in place of his own head when he defied his own military discipline.

Medusa. Relic itself was a feather from Pegasus, which is one of her Noble Phantasms in the Nasuverse.

There's always another myth, though I don't see others of Pegasus.

Though discovering he had a human brother was weird.

It may be tiny, but there is a sliver of a mirror sitting inside of the box. The legend has it, that the last one who opened it was blinded by the full mirror. Closing the box so you wouldn't displace the fragment, you hug it to your chest, heart beating like a big brass band. Although you had this absurdly rare relic, it still didn't mean you had won the war completely yet though.

You still had the Tohsaka participating in the war and the even more powerful and experienced Einzbern as well. You had to keep on your toes and remain focused, slapping yourself lightly on both cheeks to wake you up, you take a look out of the window. You could see the docks from here, the large containers sitting by the bay.

Thinking to yourself, your current objectives are:
- Setting up a Headquarters.
- Finding out information on other masters
- Maximizing the summoning of your Servant.

However, to do the third you'd need the first. Pulling out a map of the area, you could see several areas of which you could inhabit. You should probably pick one of them.

>Take a house in the residential district, one of the more eastern styled ones so you're far from the Tohsaka estate.

The cab ride comes to a close, sliding out of the car you grimace as your shoulder is again weighted down by your equipment. With a sigh coming from your lips, you take a quick survey of your surroundings, while the world begins to grow dark with the approaching rain.

A small look around, and a purchase of an Umbrella leaves you with three suitable places for you to inhabit.

> A small house with a single man living inside it. Apparently he works as a "Freeter" This is a person who in Japan takes up simple work that can be completed quickly with short hours, small pay, but allowing for greater free time instead of working to become a salary-man.

> An absolutely huge Japanese style house. Completely uninhabited. You're not sure you can jump the walls though.

> A middling sized house. A young couple used to live there, but haven't been seen for a few weeks now, likely on holiday.

Uninhabited is perfect. Jumping the walls is hard, but there may be another way in.

It's confirmed abandoned and we won't have to worry about noise. We just have to get in. Is there a back entrance, or a front gate we could climb?

Well technically we don't NEED it because no one is nearly as stupid as Shirou as is.

For almost one moment you try to jump the wall. Almost. You decide to check the door first, pushing on it lightly it gives allowing access. With a sigh of relief you enter into the household.

The firm walls surrounding the premises are good to keep out prying eyes, you remark to yourself as you keep to the stone path. Although, weeds and grass are slowly eroding through even that, the green brushing against the bottom of your heels as you approach the house. Truly it does appear to be deserted, for several years in fact. The grass has overgrown, the little paper-wall-things that the Japanese use have holes inside them and the wood is undoubtedly rotting.

With a sigh, you drop your bag and push the door shut. The area's too open on the inside of the house, it's positioning would allow for some well laid magical fields, but establishing an atelier would be tough. The design is far too open to the outside, causing mana to be lost. Then again, your spells aren't exactly going to be too effective against Servants anyway.

There's a shed in the back, however that is most certainly locked. You could probably break it open with some effort though, you would need a crowbar or something magical however. Letting your bag fall to the mats in the middle of the large house, you let out a long sigh and fall on your butt. This is going to take a lot of work.

Thinking back to your objectives, you re-arrange your thoughts.
- Perform ritual at the right time for maximum efficiency (Midnight)
- Find information on other masters
+ Make sure this place has a bounded field, so you can detect intruders. + means it can be ignored, but is advised..

At this point, you have several options to consider regarding information. You can easily create familiars to observe the other masters, but currently you only know of two. Right now you can sustain three familiars.
You have all the ingredients prepared for the ritual tonight, so all there is, is to set up the circle.

1/2
>>
While I'm writing up my next post, if you have any ideas you'd like to implement like where to scout, who to focus on, etc, then please state it. Alterations to the ritual could have been made to specify a certain servant class, but that's locked in currently due to the relic.

Even if we don't win the Grail War, defeating him will let us laugh in our lecturer's face.

Trying to make a place inside the house to create the ritual would be good, though that shed is tempting. Mana leaking is bad.

Set up a bounded field right away just in case. Don't want no undesirables butting in unexpectedly while we're preparing for our ritual.

Take care of this immediately, look around the house a bit, see if we can't find something to easily take care of that shed.

His is the hand that glows with a red ripple, fingers pressed into the wrist. His is the voice which cries out for the chaos to blind the one who's chains he holds. To keep him inside the cage of madness he is trapped in. The scales of old light up with the spark of a newly born servant. His deep voice echoing throughout the halls cloven from the ground.

A call answered.

His voice calls out for thou the seven days clad in the Great Trinity. Calling him forth the guardian of the heavenly scales, from the great circle of constraint. A monster smiles, it's skinless skin crawling, pressing against that borne from the earth.

Blood trickles through the lines marking the stone.

"Let silver and steel be the essence." Your voice intones off of the walls of the small shed. A heap of metal that was once a lock by your foot. "Let stone and the archduke of contracts be the foundation."

"Let red be the color I pay tribute to." Repeated twelve fold, memorized without a fault. "Let rise a wall against the wind that shall fall."

"Let the four cardinal gates close." A blue light began to glow from the finely etched lines of blood, wind from nothing pushing against your body. "Let the three-forked road from the crown reaching unto the Kingdom rotate."

"I hereby propose" A normal breathy voice warping into a fevered chant. "My will shall create thy body"

"And thy sword shall create my fate." Air scrapes your throat "Abiding by the summons of the Holy Grail"

"If thou dost accede to this will and reason, answer me!" The last of your words becoming a scream, as the final verse approaches.

"I hereby swear" Sweat rolled across your body as you faced the ever growing tempest of the summoning circle. "I will be all that is good in the eternal world."

"I will be the disposer of evil in the eternal world." Determination had already filled your mind. This war was yours to win. The Grail yours to claim. Your eyes fixed upon the relic that would grant you victory.

"Thou clad with the Great Trinity" The echoing walls repeating your hoarse voice back at you. "Come forth from the circle of constraint."

Your voice died unexpectedly in your throat, there was no more air. But you pushed, further and further until the words crept from your mouth. "Guardian of the Heavenly Scales" The final word.

White was the world bathed, the summoning complete. Unknown to you, your knees had hit the stone floor, pain abstract to your mind.

>Because he had Rin and Archer to supplement his shitty abilities.

Archer was barely a help in Fate, what with the passive-aggressively trying to get Shirou killed all the time then jobbing, he was useful in HF mostly for his dying contribution. And you seem to be forgetting UBW, where Archer goes rogue and Shirou has to stab all the things.

He'd have died straight up to Berzerker without Archer and Rin's help. He's only able to really fuck up Caster and her Master because he has both Saber and Rin to count on.

Plus, nevermind their help against Medusa (both times). Rin also provides Shirou with assistance, peptalks and help on charging Saber. Without Rin, he's Waver tier. No, less.

>>36431891
I hope so. It would be interesting if we have to deal with Berzerker, considering how shit our abilities are.

It's appearance wasn't that much different from that of a human being, but something was different. Clearly so. The power emanating from it transcended that of any human, magus or even Apostle that you had faced before.

"Are you my Master?" It. No, she. She asked politely. The moment left you speechless, the swirling impossible power in front of you would be under your control? The burning pain in your hand only furthering perturbing you.

The large fluffy ears twitch for a moment, the yellow eyes trained upon you. For the moment, both of you are silent. "Um.....right?" Her voice breaks absence of sound.

"Yay!" The strange woman does a dance on her feet, spinning. "Contract established! Caster at your service!"

You're almost inclined to question your sanity for a moment, is this how all servants act? "I look forward to fighting by your side, my dear Master!"

Taking a deep breath, you open your mouth to question Caster vocally. But as you do, alarm bells ring in your brain. The bounded field had been penetrated, but you now have a servant. However questionable she may be, the evidence is embedded upon the back of your palm.

>>
Seriously? Not one touch Fluffy Tail vote? /tg/ is getting surprising these days....
>>
>>36432017
EX generally signifies both a really high value AND something that just doesn't fit on the scale.

Like Taiga, someone with EX luck, isn't particularly "lucky" in her daily life but she can dance through a Grail War without a scratch just by blindly going about her daily life while people are dropping like flies around her.
>>
>>36432086
Theres another servant nearby, can't get her stabbed while we touch the fluffy tail
>>
>>36432086
You don't just touch it on your own, it has to be offered.
>>
>>36432017
Alright, well, first of all.

EX doesn't mean "Better than A". EX means it's on a totally different level, abnormal.

See: >>36432096 & >>36432055
For example.

Assuming you mean something along the lines of A++++++ Luck, then as >>36432046 says, you autosucceed any luck checks completely and utterly.

Example: Gae Bolg can be nullified through high luck (A). A++++++, could mean that instead of the Spear piercing the enemies' heart, it would only end up only barely scratching them. That said, A++++++ rank luck hasn't been seen at all.

You don't even need to motion to Caster, a single thought flies through your mind. With a bright smile, she sweeps you up in her arms carrying you like a princess. The world turns to a blur as she speeds you out of the shed in less than a single moment, the air rushing through your hair, as Caster settles calmly upon the top of the house.

The light of the moon concealed by the clouds. A thought passes between you and her "Servant?" She returns it with a soft "No", motioning towards the entrance of the estate. A small girl had pushed open the door, breathing heavily as she hid behind the other. Very young, with black hair and a tattered dress. Pressing herself into the walls of premises.

Caster's ears fall a little, a thought passing over to your mind "Shall we investigate, Master?" Double checking, you inquire again about any servants nearby. To which she answers that there is none.

>Investigate the strange girl.

>Go back to the shed and learn about Caster, that should take priority.

I'm more aiming for a Tamamo under Pierce than a Tamamo under FeMC/MC, if that makes sense. That being said, votes go where the votes go.

Regardless, this quest shouldn't go on for beyond 15 threads at very, very max. And even then, Caster's in a great position to sustain multiple servants, so the choices are yours. If it's really done that much of a hit, then I'll likely re-make the quest with some tightened points, pre-writing and planning.

Tamamo whisks you away to the ground, a small walk away from the girl. She gives off a silly wave as she dissolves into her incorporeal form. Taking slow and cautious steps towards her, you could hear her sobbing only increasing in magnitude. Finally you're in plain sight, and you can see her crawled up, tears streaming down her childlike face.

Deciding it's safe, you step forwards. The girl looks upwards, her relatively straight black hair mattedwith sweat, tears and the earlier rain. Eyes widening in shock for a moment, you position your hands holding them palms up. She simply buries her face into her arms again, sobbing returning. With a sigh, you sit down next to her and bring her into a hug.

Burying her tiny head into your chest, the two of you remain like that for what seems like an age. Finally you ask the question "Who are you?"

Her eyes look up to you and whisper " S-sakura. Toh...Tohsaka Sakura "

Awww, now ask her what happened and kill who ever made her cry
>>
>>36432994

>>
>>36432994
Thoughts assail you. Was she bait? Had the Tohsaka found you already? How did they know you had summoned a Servant this early on? Where did they find you? The taxi, the airport, the plane? You bite into your lip, almost so hard you draw blood, heart pounding harder and harder in your chest.

A few mental communications with caster confirm again, there are no servants. You're confused, what was she doing here? Why would Tohsaka's daughter be homeless and wandering around in the middle of the night? It doesn't make sense, it doesn't make sense at all. Sakura stared up at you with the stare of an innocent girl, who's lost everything.

And here's where I'm going to end it today, it's getting late.

>>

A magic crest is stored knowledge of your parents, grandparents, etc. At a certain point in their lives the parents will transplant the crest into their child, improving the child's potential with magic. This can go back for hundreds of years if nothing serious happens to the family.

For this character, the "barely existant magical crest" simply means that the family isn't very old. If you've watched/read fate/zero we're pretty much Waver Velvet, a mediocre mage because the family isn't old, in competition with people like Kayneth, a fairly old mage family that's much more powerful.

There are very few mages who get anywhere without a crest, Aozaki Touko is the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

You could also just watch the anime Fate/Zero

Since it's based on the Fourth War, you can read the Fate/zero novel or watch the anime. You'll get general knowledge, but the core of the franchise is the visual novel Fate/stay night, where they explain everything over just 60 hours of reading.
