Breakfast is coffee and Gallian toast. You're sitting outside with your team and debriefing them about your first missions together. No one died except for a bunch of Imperial soldiers, but your scout came too damn close to getting shot dead by a sniper and you don't want to take any risk like that again.

"It probably won't be an issue for future infantry missions, but we'll have to be more careful with reconnaissance missions," you say. "Assume that if someone could see you if they were there, they are there and you need to stay behind cover. I guess that's all for today."

"Have you heard any news about our next mission?" Nina asks. "I saw a lot of people packing up."

"There's a rumour we'll be moving in a few days, but I don't know where," you say. " Ghirlandaio would be my guess."

"I heard they were holding well," Jetje says. "Or at least better than the Central and Southern Gallian Armies are. I assume command will want it reinforced so it doesn't fall."

"Ghirlandaio isn't an easy spot to get through, but Gallia can't take any chances there," you say. "If it falls, our entire defense line will collapse."

You finish your coffee and move on to the next order of business.

I'm thinking officer, scout and engineer levels no point banking xp in a VC game.

"We're going to the training grounds next," you say. "We need to keep in shape. That also means we're now on the clock."

Leifstel, Kreuss and Stroheim immediately straighten up and snap to attention.

"Yes, sir!"

You lead your team at a light jog, taking the long way around the village streets to get some exercise in and to remind the townspeople that they army will look after them. Several villagers smile and greet you as you pass by, but they don't disturb your exercise.

The training grounds are mostly empty, which isn't surprising. Most of the teams and squads are probably just now returning to base or else they're enjoying some time off.

"Sir. Corporals" The drill sergeant greets the four of you. "How can I help you today? I expect the other teams will show up this afternoon, but for now, my schedule's open."

"Thanks, sergeant," you say. "All right, team 4! Let's get to work!"

You start with the standard physical training; running, lifting, obstacle courses, that sort of thing. You gradually increase the load you're carrying until you're doing the course in full combat gear. Then you give the stealth course a run.

After that, you switch to first aid and basic mechanics. Stroheim takes charge of the class and talks you through the basic splints and bandages before moving on to the wonders of ragnaid. She makes a few cracks about how it rendered field medics obsolete, but she also goes to great lengths to remind you that incorrect application of ragnaid will lead to ragnite poisoning and that shit will wreck most healthy adult males.

As your training winds down, you pass by the armoury. Old man Gaul is inspecting a new crate of supplies. The stamp on the side says it's from the Central Gallian Army. You have no idea how it got all the way up here, but it might have some useful gear.

"Come on," you say. "I'd like to check the armoury."

"Oh, so you met Gaul," Nina says. "I get most of my stuff from him, military and personal."

"I really wish we could just get good supplies here," Jetje says.

"The military has to establish priorities and we're not on the front lines," you say. "That's why we sometimes have to get creative. Hey, sergeant!"

Gaul looks up from his crate of questionable goods to beckon you closer.

"Welcome, Lieutenant," he says. "I heard you made some decent cash during your last job."

"About five or six hundred," you say. "Can that get us anything good?"

"Maybe." Gaul scratches his chin. "Better weapons start at a thousand ducats and go up from there, but I think I can spare some weapon modifications for you."

"I'll have a look," you say.

"I'll take all of it," you say. "It's not much on it's own, but it'll add up."

"That's usually how these things go," Gaul says. "The soldiers get a little better, than the equipment gets a little better. Add it all up and you end up a lot better. Come along then. I'll get you outfitted."

You spend the next hour getting accustomed to your new weapons. There's no major difference in performance, but the improved propellant also affects your closer-range shots and requires different adjustments for wind and distance. It also takes you a little while to get used to gauging distances with your new scope.

The rest of your team has it easy. Jetje's new blade doesn't require any special training, but Nina and Vanessa need more time to get used to their new rifles.

"The equipment looks good, sergeant," you say. "Is there any upkeep?"

"Nothing special," he says. "The fee covers all the ongoing costs. So long as my contacts keep their jobs, it won't be a problem."

"All right, thanks," you say. "Ladies, let's get this back in storage."

You return to your team's section of the base and put your guns and uniforms back in their lockers. The security isn't that great, but there haven't been any thefts yet as far as you know.

"Where to next, Renard?" Jetje asks.

"I'll see if there's any news at the headquarters," you say. "You're dismissed for now."

"Yes, sir!"

You leave your team behind and walk over to the headquarters. There are half a dozen trucks parked outside the building and enlisted men and women are running in and out of the building. Yeah, something definitely happened. You slip in as two runners are heading out.

The inside is even more of a mess. People are running around, screaming orders and confirmation of orders, carrying papers and maps back and forth. Your fellow officers are just sitting by the major's table. You sit next to a woman - a captain, according to her insignia - and decide to make some small talk.

"Did something happen?" You ask.

"There was a messenger from farther up note," the captain says. "I'm assuming the news is not good."

"I suppose the war was going to catch up with us eventually," you say.

"Indeed it was. Wait." The woman turns to you. "You're the new guy, right? De Velde? Ernestine told me about you."

"Yes, ma'am," you say. "First Lieutenant Renard de Velde. A pleasure to make your acquaintance."

"Captain Elsa DuLac," she says. "Likewise. I'm impressed you made it out of that ambush alive. I'm tempting to get my hands on you, but I already have enough pets as it is. I am curious about one thing, however. What do you hope to get out of this war?"

"I just want Gallia's military to get the respect it deserves," you say. "Sure, there's a limit to how militarized a neutral country can afford to be, but I don't want to stay stuck in the middle of the Empire and the Federation's power plays."

"A respectable sentiment," Elsa says. "And one I don't see very often. Do try not to get yourself killed, Lieutenant. You might be useful to Gallia if you can survive."

"I'll keep your advice in mind, Captain."

"Everyone! Be quiet!" Major Lenier slams his fist against the table to get the room's attention. "First off, everyone who's packing, hurry it up. I want to be in Teschelbero tomorrow!"

You frown. Teschelbero is in the area, but it's in the opposite direction of Ghirlandaio. Something must be very, very wrong.

"As for the rest of you." He turns to the gathered officers. "A patrol boat spotted Imperial transports in the waters near Teschelbero. The general is concerned that the Imperial might take the port and use it to support their siege of Ghirlandaio. If Ghirlandaio gets flanked, it may very well fall and if Ghirlandaio falls, the Gallian defense line will collapse."

He waits a moment for his words to sink in. It's quite dramatic.

"Our deployment orders have changed. We will be going to Teschelbero immediately. I want to be there tomorrow. Once we're there, most of our teams will cover the ports. However, I need two teams to volunteer for more specific objectives." He holds up a map of the city of Teschelbero and looks towards you. "There is a watchtower on the western side of the port and a lighthouse on the eastern side. The watchtower has an open view of much of the port. If the Imperials claim it, our defense of the city will become difficult. Meanwhile, the lighthouse is necessary if we want to prevent nocturnal attacks. We believe the Imperials are going to target both objectives. I want two small teams to secure them as soon as possible. Lieutenant de Velde, in light of your recent success, I'm letting you pick first."

Sure we not have anything special that helps us fight at night but I doubt any other groups are nocturnal specialists either. Besides, there's a limit to the impact we can make from a watchtower on the fringes, stopping or alerting about a night attack is serious business.

"Can we get more details on the objectives?"

"Whoever takes the watchtower is responsible for any Imperials who step on the port," the major says. "Whoever takes the lighthouse has to sweep the lamp back and forth across the water at night to spot any boats trying to sneak in. Either way, if any Imperials reach the objective, you'll need to send out a warning and hold them off."

"So there's no need for someone specialized in night operations to take the lighthouse?"

"No more than the watchtower," the major says. "You'll get about the same amount of light to work with either way."

That clinches the decision for you. The lighthouse is an important objective, but it would make for a terrible place to snipe at the port from. If you're going to be going into tight spaces either way, you'd rather get something for your efforts. The watchtower will allow you to do what you do best and you won't have to be stingy with Nina's grenades if there's no sensitive equipment to worry about.

"We'll take the watchtower," you say. "I'd rather snipe than hold down the lighthouse."

"Good, take a map of the city on your way out and start planning the details with your team."

The major hands out the rest of the assignments. Someone else will handle the lighthouse, while the full squads will be responsible for securing the port with some support from the remaining teams. You take a map of Teschelbero on your way out.

The major wants to leave late in the afternoon. You'll need to make a stop to rest during the night, but you'll still be able to make it to Teschelbero by dawn tomorrow. If you're lucky, you'll be there before the Imperials. If you're really lucky, the report was wrong or the Imperials are in the area for reasons unrelated to Teschelbero. For now, however, you need to brief your team.

Indeed, not sure what she can add to our briefing since we're stationed to separate parts of the port and we can't exactly make detailed plans until we see the lie of the land.

Even then the limit of any cooperation would be something along the lines of "if you get pinned we'll snipe some imps" which we'd be doing anyway.

Sure Euro will make it interesting though.

It was also stated that one other team would be going for the lighthouse on the opposite side of the port and all other teams would be supporting the securing of the port.

I can't see any way she could help us from the main port area and we'll be giving her and the main force all the support we can anyway.

"Captain." You speak to Elsa as she leaves. "Would you like to join my team's briefing session? Your squad's been assigned to the area around the watchtower, so it might come in useful."

"Hmmmā€¦" Elsa stares at you while humming quietly to herself. "Thinking about regiment cohesion already? Not bad, not bad. I'll take you up on that offer."

"The pub, then?"

"It's where everyone ends up," Elsa says. "This village has a lot of interesting sights, but only one place that serves alcohol."

"I suppose we can't complain," you say. "It does make it easier to find people."

"Certainly easier than in the middle of a battle."

You arrive at the pub and Elsa orders some tables brought together. There are about twenty people in her squad and four in your team, so you'll be needing a lot of space. Your corporals seem surprised at the sudden arrangements and Vanessa is as nervous as usual, but they don't complain. Your team joins you at a table near Elsa's. You spot Ernestine on the other side of the room.

"Captain!" A boyish private runs up to Elsa andā€¦ kneels next to her. "Squad 1 has arrived, as you commanded."

Elsa pulls the boy up by his gold-adorned leather collar.

"Excellent work," she says "I'll reward you later."

"Thank you, Captain!"

"As for the rest of you," Elsa begins the briefing. "We suspect there will be an attack on Teschelbero. We're heading there to reinforce the port. Lieutenant de Velde and his team will be securing a nearby watchtower and providing us with sniper cover. We are assuming that the Imperials will be there by the time we arrive, which is why I want our operation sorted out before we leave. Lieutenant, do you have any preferences for our operation? I assure you, it's all the same to us."

Let's see how well we can perform moving quickly, besides the combination of a distraction and the streets we're operating in should make speed a good tactic, give the imps around the watchtower no time to regroup or organise.

Also the faster we can take the watchtower the better for all the other squads involved.

That or fighting aggressively sounds fine. Once we have the tower secured we can hopefully communicate on enemy movements so the sooner the better.

Man, can't we have freakin' chains draped around the harbor and stuff. That's they did in halifax to keep enemy ships and submarines out.

Any harbour expecting to be attacked should have a boom defence. I assume since the war came somewhat suddenly to Galia and the people in charge of defending this place never expected to be attacked, the defences are sadly lacking.

"We could use a distraction to draw Imperial troops away from the watchtower," you say. "Can you attack aggressively?"

"That's how we usually do it," Elsa says. "Now then, let's work out the details. Hopefully, we won't need any of these plans."

As Elsa starts going over the specifics of the operation with her, you turn to your own team.

"Our job is to take and hold the watchtower on the western side of the port," you say. "Once we have it, we'll have an open view of most of the port. I'll be able to snipe any Imperials in the area."

"I assume holding it won't be easy," Jetje says.

"It shouldn't be too hard," you say. "There's nothing important in there, so Nina can have fun with her grenades-"

"Because that's what a nurse wants to hear."

"- and you'll be able to clear the narrow spaces inside. It should be a good environment for a fencer, especially if the Imperial troops haven't arrived. They'll have to use scouts to secure the tower as fast as possible, so they shouldn't have any fencers to counter you. Once we're in, Vanessa can cover the approach and I'll cover the port."

"I'll do my best," Vanessa says.

"One last thingā€¦"

"Nina, we'll really need you on grenades if things go wrong," you say. "Watch your aim and get as many of them as you can."

"I don't have that many grenades, but I'll be sure not to waste them," Nina says.

Meanwhile, you'll double-check your shots to make sure they count. Even if you have a good view of the port, any fight in the city will go wild fast. You don't want to risk hitting a civilian or one of your comrades. Besides, while bullets aren't as expensive as grenades, you don't want to waste them either.

"That's all for now," you say. "If we show up before the Imperials do, there won't be a problem. If we arrive and the Imperials are there, we'll be ready."

"Absolutely!" Vanessa sounds as eager as always, no doubt to make up for getting shot during her first mission.

Jetje and Nina, on the other hand, are casual about it. They paid attention to every word of the briefing, so you know they're taking it seriously, but they're not letting it get to them. At least not yet.

Elsa has finished her own briefing and her squad is dispersing. You spot Ernestine updating her kill score.

We'll check it after this battle. We're going to have a prime sniping spot so it shouldn't be so embarrassing. We may not be near the bottom after this one.

Why not, might as well keep up a rivalry. I'd rather compete with her for kills this battle instead of trying to futilely catch up 40 kills or so though.

You decide to check Ernestine's score. Who knows? You might be able to catch up with her.

Your hopes are quickly dashed when you see her add five kills to her new tally. The silver lining is that you've been promoted from last place and are now in a three-way tie for the spots seven to nine.

"How'd you get five kills?"

"They were all in the same car," Ernestine says. "I killed the driver, then the car crashed, the I killed the officer, then I killed his three escorts while they were crawling for cover. I'm not sure if they were in a daze or if their legs were broken."

"Were all your kills that lucky, or was this a first?"

"No, this was definitely a first," she says. "Sorry, looks like the Empire wants me to stay in first place. But since you're hereā€¦" She holds up a 20 ducat bill between her fingers. "I'm willing to reset the score to zero between the two of us, if you're game for it. We both scored the same number of kills since you arrived, so I think it's only fair. Twenty ducat for whoever comes out ahead after each mission. What do you say?"

>"Sorry, not interested."
>"Sounds like fun."
>"How about 50?"

That's pretty... I don't know, gruesome. I mean, yeah we're snipers and like to give ourselves a pat on the back for good work but trying to murderize as many people as possible as a game is a bit too much.

Now that's a proper rival, willing to have a real competition. I don't see the morality issue here, it's hardly different to the kill board and it's not like our motivation suddenly becomes killing as many imps as possible for 20 ducats.
>>
>>36420729
Seriously?

Our job is murdering people for money, what's it matter if we make extra off someone we were getting paid to kill anyway?
>>
>>36420695
>"Sounds like fun."

I'd raise it to 50 if we didn't vote to draw imps away from the lighthouse. Not that I think that was a bad idea. I just voted for defensively because I'm only thinking about the scoreboard.
>>
>>36420807
>motivation suddenly becomes killing as many imps as possible for 20 ducats.
Up until now we would have done that just for the bragging rights.
It's sort of an improvement when you look at it like that.

"Sounds like fun." You smile. "I just hope you're good for it."

"This is cheap change," Ernestine says. "You got an Imperial sniper during your last mission, right? How much was that worth? Two hundred?"

"Two hundred twenty with the base bounty," you say.

"Nice," Ernestine says. "Do you ever wonder what our heads are worth to the Imps?"

"I try not to think about it." You wave her goodbye. "I need to back. I'll see you later."

"Bye."

It doesn't take you very long to pack. You were traveling light in the first place, so it's just a matter if putting your personal effects back.

When you're done, the major has the convoy ready to go. You hope into the passenger seat of your team's assigned truck while Jetje drives. Several townspeople show up to wish you goodbye. Several are wearing militia uniforms, so it seems the major isn't leaving them defenseless.

The convoy drives until well after sunset and only stops because the major wants the regiment well-rested in the morning. You step out of the truck and help your team set up their tents. Splitting two tents between three women and a men would be awkward in most circumstances, but the major wants people standing on watch.

"One of us can stand watch while the other takes the tent, Renard," Vanessa says. "We're the only ones qualified anyway."

"That sounds fair."

>>
>>36421233
We'll be the person with the most responsibilty tomorrow. We should try to be as rested as possible.
>>
>>36421286
Fair enough changing my vote to first watch. Was mostly voting for second due to lack of trust in Vanessa but I guess if we can't rely on her there's no point having her in the team. I'll give her some more chances.
>>
>>36421371
Yeah. She'd better step up her game tomorrow.
>>
>>36421168
"I'll take the first watch," you say. "You go get rest somewhere."

"Good night!"

You scrounge up a lamp and start checking your rifle. You normally wouldn't, but you haven't had time yet and you'll need your gear in top shape in case anything goes wrong tomorrow. Besides, a single lamp can't make a convoy this size any less stealthy.

You clean your rifle, count your bullets and test out your new sight a bit more in the dark. As time goes on, the camp quiets down and becomes still, until it's only you and the other watchmen on duty. You keep your eyes and ears open for some threat, but time simply goes by.

Until the last hour of your watch.

Another car comes screaming up the road. It skids to a stop as it approaches your position and you and the other soldiers on watch raise your weapons at it. A man stumbles out and falls on the ground. Despite the darkness, you recognize the Gallian colours of his uniform. You relax your guard, as do the other soldiers. The others begin to wake up and emerge from their tents, weapons at the ready. One soldier approaches the man who fell from the car.

"Medic!" He yells. "We need a medic! And someone get the major!"

It seems the situation at Teschelbero is as dire as you had all feared.

That's all for today. The next thread will be next Wednesday at around 7PM EST. I'll announce it on Twitter. I'd like to run more often, but I don't want to risk burning out just yet. I'll see if I can keep up a faster pace during the Holidays.

Thanks for playing!
>>
>>36421620
Thanks for running, good thread. Don't worry about going faster than weekly at them moment, if you can it's great but regular weekly is better than short bursts then long downtime.

That's also the benefit of twitter, just give some advance warning when you feel up to running and most people should get the message.

See you next week.
