You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

Well, today's the day. You and just about ALL of your friends will be visiting the lake today... you're honestly pretty excited about it!

Also there's that whole thing with Karel that you have to worry about, but you're still pretty sure that that'll turn out fine.

>Congratulations, Reinhold is now a fearsome DIRE WOLF!
>Much larger than their the other types of wolf, the Dire Wolf's size also means that they are also that much more dangerous.
>The Princess considers you to be her dear friend!
>But while dire wolves are massive, they still don't -quite- stand on the same level as people.

You give up on sleeping.

This is like the third time that you've woken up early, and it just doesn't seem like your body wants to actually sleep so you have officially given up on doing so. And so, you pull yourself from under the warm covers and expose your bare arms to the cool morning air...

...yeah, that definitely shocked you all the way awake.

After getting in a morning stretch, you head into the bathroom and take a nice long shower, then get yourself all nice and presentable for the day.

Drawing implements... check.

Sword... check.

"Alright, time to go," you say, patting your sword as you walk out into the hallway.

It's REALLY early in the morning so it might not be the best idea to go and bug your friends just yet... but you're fairly certain that Arnaud is up and about, especially with the final preparations for the trip and all.

And if you can help out before starting your actual work for the day, that's always a bonus. After all, he's always there to help you out when you need it. Returning the favor is the least you can do.

After making sure that your door is completely closed, you head down to the first floor of the castle, it's usually where you find him around this time of the day.

Having eaten up a little bit of time so far, you figure that it's not too early to go check on Marianne now. She was still recovering from her cold yesterday, and you want to make sure that she's doing alright. And so, you head back upstairs to the hallway where both of your rooms lie, stopping in front of her door.

KNOCK KNOCK KNO-

The door swings open, and you just barely stop yourself from knocking on Melanie's head instead.

"Whoa," you say, hopping back on instinct. "Sorry about that, Melanie."
"It's fine," Melanie sighs. "I take it you wanted to check on the Princess this morning?"
"That's pretty much it," you reply.

Now that you actually bother to look at her face, Melanie doesn't appear to be all that happy...

You can hear loud, throaty coughing coming from inside the bedroom. It sounds like she has a lot of buildup in her lungs.

"...damn," you grumble. "It's not serious, is it?"
"I don't think so," Melanie replies, "but it's really not a good idea for her to be outside in her condition... and especially not out by a lake."

Suddenly, you feel REALLY crappy. It was bad enough that Marianne's been sick for the past few days, but now she's feeling so bad that she can't even go with you and the others to hang out by the lake. The thought of her lying in bed, coughing and miserable, while everyone else enjoys themselves lust makes you feel really really REALLY guilty.

"Well I don't have to go just yet," you say. "I mean, I could bring you your breakfast and we could hang out until I have to leave if you want..."
"That sounds like a wonderful idea!" Melanie says with a beaming smile. "Don't you think so too, PrincesS?"

Just because Nico gets flustered when people tease her doesn't mean she's shy. Girl seems to put a lot of value in her presence and being mocked pisses her off because it undermines her dominance. She was all over meido in like 0.3 seconds after the confession, that's far from shy.

For fear of riling Marianne up again and causing her to start coughing even more, you wait by the door until Melanie comes back from helping her.

"...is she going to be alright?" you ask Melanie once she comes back to the door.
"Yes," Melanie nods. "You just aggravated her when you blatantly ignored what she just told you, that's all."

You're pretty sure that this is your first time having Melanie actually be visibly angry with you.

"Melanie, would you PLEASE tell him to go bother someone else?" Marianne asks.
"You heard her," Melanie says, tilting her head towards the interior of the room.
"Well, uh..." you mumble. "Can I at least get her breakfast?" you ask.

More or less. We don't always need to follow through on our bouts of stubbornness. She's made it clear that she ACTUALLY doesn't want to be bothered rather than just doing the long-suffering routine she always does, so we should respect that.

Maybe eventually she'll figure out that she can just default to saying what she actually means instead of giving us the tsunaround so there can be an actual understanding between us instead of needing to keep probing on every stupid little thing in order to find out how she actually feels.
>>

You're a special kind of ignorant, aren'cha? Obviously we'd point out that we can take the hint that she doesn't want to be bothered, and excuse ourselves. Nobody here is that fuckstupid as to think that leaving without a word is the way to handle this thing. That's dumber than getting her breakfast and thinking she's okay with it.
>>
>>36406547
You don't just meander off, you moron. You tell them that if it's really that big a deal it's fine if they have a maid do it. Marianne's reluctantly given us this little bit leeway in fetching breakfast and to just throw it back in her face like it didn't matter that much to us in the first place looks as though we're needlessly messing with her and wasting her time.

"Alright, hold still and I'll get right on it," you nod.
"Okay," Melanie sighs. "Just head to te kitchen and someone should be able to whip up something for her."
"Got it."

You smile guiltily at Melanie before you speed off to3ards the stairwell and make your way down to the basement. You were just trying to be nice, but you guess you pushed it a bit too far this time... the least you can do is hurry up with the breakfast so she doesn't have to wait too long.

As you walk through the kitchen doorway, you stop just short of running into someone...

"...Nicolette?" you say, surprised to see her down here. She's wearing her usual casual attire of a long-sleeved shirt, a skirt and leggings, and is holding a pretty large basket in her arms.
"Hey," Nicolette waves. "What're you doing down here, I thought you always eat breakfast with Marianne."

I'd much rather make overtures to showing we're willing to take her at face value if she says what she means rather than treating this as another small victory for stubbornness in the face of adversity.

If we just pump the fist at the close of negotiations about being allowed to do whichever inconsequential thing we had to pester Marianne about this time, things'll never get any better.

"She's sick," you reply as you walk past her and make your way for the back room.
"Still?" Nicolette sighs.
"Yeah, and she's feeling especially bad today so she won't be able to come along with us."
"Just fuckin' great..." she mumbles. "So you're getting something to eat here since you won't be having breakfast with her?"
"No," you shake your head. "I pissed her off again so I'm trying to get her breakfast and bring it up there so she doesn't have to wait."

Nicolette stares at you in disbelief.

"AGAIN!?" she groans. "C'mon, man..."

But you don't have time to chitchat, instead waving at her to wait while you enter the back room and ask the cook for a plate to carry upstairs to Marianne.

Let's ask Arch how your way would have gone down post-thread, okay?

>>36406725
It's not about little victories won by stubbornness. Marianne's letting us fetch breakfast in a hope of pacifying our pushiness. Our pushiness comes from a want to help her and she thinks by letting us think we helped, we'll leave her alone. Turning down the chance to bring breakfast after she's let us would be like rubbing our little gain in her face, like winning a balloon just so you could pop it in the runner-up's face.
>>
>>36406757
I'm guessing she doesn't want Nico to come up to her room either, huh?

And now let's just sit back and see how pushing the breakfast will blow up in our faces because Marie didn't want us around.

But you don't have time to chitchat, instead waving at her to wait while you enter the back room and ask the cook for a plate to carry upstairs to Marianne.

Luckily, the cook was already in the middle of preparing breakfast for everyone... but it'll still take a few minutes to prepare a plate for Marianne so you decide to step outside while he does that.

"Nice to see that you're back to your usual antics," Nicolette sighs.
"Yeah, yeah," you mumble. "Why are you down here, anyways? I thought you slept at home last night."
"Yeah, but they asked me to grab this basket of muffins," she says, holding it up. "I came here with Luciana and Elena and the dragons and all them so I think we should be ready to go once your sister shows up."
"Oh yeah," you say, your mood lightening a little at the thought of seeing her.

Just then, the cook calls you back over to take the serving tray with the Princess's food on it. It came with a covered mug of orange juice, but you ask them to switch it out for milk with honey since her throat's most likely pretty sore and you know all too well the agony that is drinking orange juice in such a condition.

"Not really, sorry," you say, shrugging. While you most definitely DO know the exact reason why Sir Gregory would be so agitated right now, it's really not your place to go blabbing it to other people.
"Figures," Nicolette sighs. "Well I guess I ought to get these upstairs," she says, holding up the basket, "and you better get that food to Marianne before you piss her off even more than you already have."
"Yeah, I know," you grumble.

And with that, the two of you part ways. While balancing the tray's contents, you carefully make your way all the way back upstairs and stop by the Princess's door once again.

"...crap," you say as you look down at the tray. Your hands are full, and you REALLY don't want to screw up and drop anything at this critical time.

With a little concentration, you manage to sprout off a tendril from your bracelet.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK

Though it's not as loud as it would have been had you used your hands, that's probably for the better when you consider the circumstances. Your assumptions are justified when Melanie opens the door for you a few seconds after you return your bracelet to its original shape.

"That didn't take long," Melanie says as she takes the tray from you. "Thank you for bringing this up here, she -does- appreciate the effort."

You've already pissed off one of your friends today, and you'd much rather avoid doing so again for as long as you can. So instead of bugging KArel of one of the others, you make your way down to the first floor of the castle and then over to the front gate.

Yup, you're just going to wait for Citrine to show up. That's all.

And so, you wait...

...and wait...

...and wait.

Just as you're starting to doze off, you spot a carriage approaching from the distance. The sight of it snaps you right back awake and you wait anxiously as it pulls in through the gate and stops not too far away from where you're standing...

...and then the driver hops down from his seat and hurries to the door, then opens it and helps its passenger down.

Its visibly pregnant passenger.

"So this is the castle..." Citrine says, completely awestruck as she takes in the sights.

And then her eyes meet yours.

"Hey Reinhold," Citrine grabs you by the arm and pulls you over to her, "what's so funny?"
"N- nothing," you shake your head. "It's just really nice to see you getting along, you know?" you say, a wide grin on your face.
"I bet it is," Citrine says, grabbing you by the arm and leaning on you. "The two people who you love most in the whole wide world getting along and all..."
"Oh, so -that's- why he's smiling like that!" Luciana giggles.
"Well a lot of folks have problems with their in-laws," Citrine says, "so I bet Reinhold's just relieved that he won't have to worry about his future wife getting along with his sister!"
"C... c'mon..." you mumble.

"But then he'll have to worry about the two of us ganging up on him after he inevitably does something dumb to make one of us angry..." Luciana laughs.
"Oh, I doubt that would ever happen," Citrine says, smiling at you. "Reinhold's a perfect gentleman, after all!"

You'd forgotten that her opinion of you is impossibly high...

Arnaud seems to be in kind o f a hurry... maybe it's related to that letter that came in earlier?

"Uh, what's going on?" you ask. "Did something happen?"
"Yes," Arnaud sighs. "We received a report that those Leviathans that had been causing trouble earlier have actually started to attack ships in the port at Cateno..."
"Did..." Citrine hurries over to him, "...did you say -Cateno-?" she asks.
"Wait," Luciana furrows her brow. "Isn't that the village where the two of you..."
"Yeah," you nod. "It is."

So that place is...

"It looks like there's to many of those things over there for the few troops that we had stationed in that area to handle," Arnaud says, cracking his knuckles, "so the King's having me go out there and take care of things myself before anyone gets hurt."

"The King -was- going to send Sir Vincent to take care of it," Arnaud says, "but he's not too fond of fighting things that live in water so he'll be staying here while I go in his place."
"But what about our trip?" Luciana asks. We're going to a -lake- and if there are Leviathans-"
"The inlet to the lake isn't large enough for them rto swim in," Arnaud replies, and we even had people scour the entire area for any sign of the things just this morning. The only place where they happen to be right now is the river that borders Cateno."
"I..." Citrine looks down at the floor and clenches her fists. "I can't believe that those EVIL things are..."

You place a hand on Citrine's shoulder in hopes of calming her down, but it doesn't seem to have much of an effect. Not to say that you're feeling all that energetic either...

"If it wasn't for Marius, I'd probably still be there right now being attacked by those things AGAIN," Citrine mumbles.
"Citrine, it'll be okay," you say, wrapping your arm around her shoulders.
"...oh," Arnaud takes a step backwards. "I'd completely forgotten that that's the town where the two of you hail from."
"Yeah," you nod.

"I wish that I was strong like Reinhold and his friends," Citrine growls. "If I could use magic like them, I'd fly over there and kill all those damned things myself, the stupid f-" she stops herself and takes a deep breath.
"Citrine?" you rub her back in hopes of calming her down.
"I'll be fine," she shakes her head. "Just remembering how much I hate horrible monsters, that's all."
"Hmm..." Arnaud stroke his beard for a few moments. "...Reinhold, perhaps you could come with me to help clear them out?" he asks. "Pick off any stragglers, help get the citizens to safety, that kind of thing."
"Eh?" Citrine stares at him. "Reinhold?" she points at you.
"Yes, I believe that he's trained enough to be more than able to fend off a few lesser dragons," he shrugs, "and this might be a good opportunity to get revenge for whatever grudge your sister has for them."

And that ends tonight's thread, folks. DANGER IS ON THE HORIZON!
I was kind of surprised that you didn't go and see what was going on with Karel after how badly tou were freaking about her last thread, but I guess that particular plot thread is going to have to wait until later.
I was also conpletely unsure as to whether you'd go help Arnaud or carry on with the lake trip as scheduled (and I'd planned stuff for both events), but I guess that's been decided now.

Next thread is I don't know! I need to take a day or five off in order to recharge my writingness. I'll be running Princess Guard next, though.

We were sort of incentivized with Citrine sads, plus, Rein hasn't got his sword on since Marconetti, plus, we haven't had Arnaud time in a long time.

Maybe, though I'm not sure who the POV character would be.

She'll be pretty worried since you're going to be in mortal danger and all.

Thanks for running Arch.

I didn't realize until now just how weird of hours this thread ran. Was reading it from Germany where is was first thing in the morning but now that I'm back in the states is boggles my mind that it's still going at 4:20 after being used to it ending around lunchtime.

>Maybe, though I'm not sure who the POV character would be.
Roll for it, they're all fun.
>>
>>36408228
Well it depends on how many there are and how long they take to kill.

Unless they're more threatening than initially thought, or something else comes up, I can't imagine that this will take more than half a day including travel time considering Arnaud is participating.

And while it's easy to assume that something else will inevitably come up, the side-show might just be Reinhold's trip down bad memory lane rather than any time-extending additional threats.

Something else will come up and we don't know how long that will take.
Fighting Leviathans is cool and all but Cateno's a wasted arena for JUST fighting leviathans in, given Rein's past with the town.
Plus, Arnaud already mentioned helping civilians and the like.

No, Rana will be the hero the picnic needs, she'll cheer everyone up and use Reinhold's advice to comfort Sylvie non-sexually which will lead to comforting her sexually.

Why doesn't Rana just go be lesbians with Nico and Meido?
Nico and Meido are the two most physically imposing grills and Meido is the most tiny. They can play out all sorts of kinky scenarios with that set-up.
