>Fighter asks why the Wizard needs Gold to cast magic.

What follows is paraphrased from the best answer I've ever heard by a party wizard to such a simple question.

"*sigh*…Because gold is magic. The first day I was an apprentice, I remember my Maestro asked me the simple question, 'Why can’t we create gold?' I thought it was an odd question, but as he left me alone to think about it, I realized I’d heard of wizards creating fire, summoning water, producing force, and all other of objects and effects… but never of a Wizard just sitting in a tower summoning mounds of gold. You’d think if it was possible, someone would’ve done it by now right? Well…why haven’t they?

It’s because sold is magic. Well, a physical manifestation and metaphysical conduit at the same time, but for your purposes, it is magic. I mean, when you sit and look at the evidence laid out, how could you not have come to the conclusion sooner? Let’s take, oh…dragons, for example. When you imagine a big bad dragon, the next thing you imagine is it guarding its’ hoard. Hoard of what you say? Oh, that’s right, GOLD. Doesn’t it strike you as a little odd that an entity whose literal being is infused with magic just happens to have not only an insatiable, but uncanny magnetism towards large quantities of gold, along with the urge to acquire as much as possible? Possibly Like-Begets-Like, mayhaps?

What about Dwarves? This is a race whose history lies below ground, closest in proximity to the veins and shafts where gold accumulates and grows (Yes, I said grows). Also the only natural race with a strange resistance to magic.

Interesting, wouldn’t you say? Almost as if there’s a subtle inoculation against it by such proximity for generations…

Lastly, to get back to what exactly I am doing with all this gold when I’m making your lovely magic item, or all my scrolls…You’re right that I’m not spending thousands of coins upon jewels and masterwork items to hold the magic in place.

That’s ludicrous, but if eldritch manipulators are spending money on high end items to imbue, it’s probably a personal focusing preference. For myself though, as you can see, I am working with normal mundane items. As to the details, first I am transmogrifying via prestidigitation these elegant golden coins into their more metaphysically soluble powder form because essence diffusion is easier by an order of magnitude when working with particulates instead of a boatload of Big Ol’ Coins. Next, with a certain amount of forceful application of will and choice incantations, you will notice the gold powder I am sprinkling and kneading on top of the object appears to be being absorbed. Remember what I said about manifestation and conduit? So the gold is not only priming these boots to be receptive towards my spells, but its starting to establish a channel to arcane ley lines it order to keep the magic going. It is indeed very time consuming rubbing gold powder into an item one pinch at a time while maintaining the proper mental focus. There’s a REASON it takes us about eight hours for every thousand gold a magic item requires. You think a consortium of magic users got together and decided on union hours for magic making? Hell no. Its plain, old, tedious, but important work if you want it to function correctly.

Now, master-of-arms and all things armly, would you kindly let me focus on the task at hand so that when I’m done, we don’t have to worry about our Holy Dictator suffering extreme vomiting and nausea whenever he puts his shoes on because I had to split my attention trying to condense decades of intense arcane study into an elementary discourse?""

Anyone else have god tier players in their group?

I love it so much when people get this in character.

every so often my group has these "campfire scenes" but they often take place during travelling or other such downtime.

It usually starts with one player asking another a question in character, and next thing you know everybody has an hour long conversation in character. It doesn't happen every session but it's my favorite part of the game.

Because 4chan culture says Reddit is Heresy.

But I'm glad to see where it really came from, still kept my screencap.

Because I'm the redditor and wanted to share the story here, too.

Sounds like your wizard is a budding Plutomancer from Unknown Armies. The only difference being your character is coming from an Enlightenment Era perspective where he believes the magic must be objectively inherent to the gold, whereas Plutomancers believe that money has magic because of it's symbolic importance to humanity.

>You've seen the beautiful truth: that money is universal transformation. Everything can be bought, and everything can be sold. Everything has its price, and that means the essence of all things is reflected in money.
>>
>>36383298
>inb4 "git"

only literal cocksuckers still cling to website tribalism and don't realize there's a massive user overlap between tumblr 4chan and reddit

so nah, thanks for the story
>>
Going by this logic, isn't copper, silver, platinum or anything else that has value magic? I thought spells don't require the gold, just that value defined in terms of gp. Also, dragons horde anything of value. Gold, platinum, gems, masterwork crafted items etc. Gold is simply more readily available because it's currency. Also, dwarves mine lots of shit. Does coal = magic now too? I'm sure their coal stockpiles are much greater than the gold ones and they are probably looking for that more often.

It's metasetting.

So all of them.

OP. I want you to listen to me.

Are you listening?

Never write again. You're fucking awful.
>>
>>36383742
Including the ones with revamped classes and magic systems?
>>
>>36383758
There is no D&D setting that isn't dumb as fuck.

Some of them are dumb for a couple different reasons than others, but they all share their shallow, simpleminded nature.

But really, I'm the one at fault for expecting anything else from a blatant combat/dungeon crawl simulator.

You act as if /tg/ is full of great writers and this guy is the exception.

We're all varying degrees of talentless hack here. The good writers are off getting paid to create the stuff we consume. They don't drop by and write for us for free, so if someone wants to entertain his fellow neckbeards, why stifle his creative efforts? Would you rather we have no storytiem at all?

And again, quite honestly, he's not that bad. Holding his two posts up to some of the other writefriends who have dropped by in the past, it's more or less the same quality. Who on /tg/ would you say has been better?

>dwarves live in close proximity to veins and shafts

That certainly explains a great deal about them.
>>
>>36383545
Not OP, but I would say that silver, copper and platinum, or gems etc have value either because
a) Magic users who know the truth about gold can trade them for gold,
or
b) They have magical properties of their own when combined with gold in specific ways. For example silver might have an intrinsic link with the positive energy plane (hence it's effectiveness against undead) so by using silver in the construction of a magic item that draws on positive energy you require less gold
>>
Shit like this makes me wish magic item trade and crafting was done with magic rocks. Generic jrpg as fuck but logically consistent. Also it would make real currency a separate and more reasonable thing.
>>
>>36388782
Also 4e had residium, why don't we do more with that?

But the wizard doesn't need gold to cast magic, he needs reagents, gems, and things that cost gold

By the book, that's what is needed for magic. Handwaved or not, that's how the system works. Saying they use gold is a simplification and ignores how it actually works in world. t's a bullshit meta answer

>Spelljammer

Ironic for you to mention that one. Spelljammer is the setting where they took the plotholes, set a fire under them, filled them with water and then used them as hot-tubs.

That is why it is one of my favorite settings. The writers were given an unreasonable objective, and accomplished it by making an unreasonable setting- everything is either rule of cool or rule of funny.
