Mom stares. Six eyes wide, taking in the sight of the towering structure, standing tall and complete before her.

"Lyra- How did you even-"

The words are broken, sloppy. She doesn't look away from the stone as she speaks.
You cough into your hand, and she glances in your direction- Just in time to see you gesture sharply, stone forming before you into a little pillar.

"It is magic, yes? The stone... It, ah, remembers? It is hard to explain."
"Remembers?"
"The shape. Of the building, yes? It wants to be complete, kind of."

She falls quiet, watching the silent stone walls. Dad hasn't said anything, waiting patiently for Mom to start.
"Can we actually..."
She trails off, watching.

"I think so. I haven't been below yet, but the hallways were wide. Except for where they collapsed. But you can get to the caves, yes. Where Seranthis was. Though I do not think he was staying in one place."

She starts forwards, legs clicking lightly on the stone, one hand trailing lightly against the wall as she walks, the shadows of the building swallowing her up.

Looking at the updatet character sheets, I noticed that Elles crossbow isn't mentioned anywhere.

Okay, we have to drag our lazy sister on a hunt soon, we can't have her evolving after the brothers after she had such a headstart.

And
>Aria lvl 82
She is gaining on us!
>>
>>36372784
>Show her everything inside- A bit of fire for a light.
>>
>>36373081
>Okay, we have to drag our lazy sister on a hunt soon
Perhaps we can tempt her with "More Food = More Protein for Silk"?
She loves to weave, so maybe by tempting her with the food needed to make lots of silk and to create lots of new clothes and tailoring projects, we can get her to come with us.
>>
>>36373145
We can just drag all of our sisters on a hunt together.
Its a bonding experience.
>>
>>36373145
>>36373081
I would hardly call her lazy considering she is the one earning most the money with her weaving.

If you want to tempt her... maybe combat related weaving? traps and the like.
>>
>>36373184
Lazy isn't quite the same thing as complacent.
And, she isn't working for money, its a byproduct of her hobbies.
>>
>>36373184
Well she IS lazy, but she's a productive kind of lazy.
>>
>>36373184
>I would hardly call her lazy
She is called the lazy spider everywhere for a reason.
She does things, but she definitly has, her own tempo, so to speak.
>>
>>36373081
I wonder that our brothers are so close to evolving, REQM had said they were still years away from that.
Especially since they were completly normal arachne its odd they gained experience this fast.
>>
>>36373237
The Queen's domain is spreading. All those entangled in our relationship web gain experience faster.
>>
>>36373145
>>36373081

I'm all up for a bit of sisterly bonding, especially granted that we may not see them for a good while. We should ask mom if she knows of anything really good (to eat or otherwise) that could help Elle in her craft. Hell, taking her to town with us next time might be enough. We'll go on a rampage with the adventurers and buy her a house right there in the city.
>>
>>36373237

Actually, he said they were years away from Wolf or Jumping Spider. Those are second tier evolutions. Our brothers will probably hit "widower" tier soon, but second stage evolutions take a lot longer generally speaking. They are reckless, but not that reckless.
>>
>>36373318
Considering it took our mother, who was unusually adventerous, 30 years to evolve into her first stage, its more than strange they evolve in slightly more than a month.
They hunt, sure, but they don't really hunt anything big or really dangerous, so they should be more similar to regular arachne.
>>
>>36372784
>Head on in behind her.

Are we planning on rebuilding it all? If we are, do we tell her?
>>
>>36372784
>>Head on in behind her.
>>
>>36373418

There was some talk of rebuilding the ruins, with there being some pros and cons to each. Right now, we don't have a strong agenda for or against it. On the other hand, a lot of talk has been circulating about going to explore outside the forest pretty soon.

We'll ask Seranthis before rebuilding the ruins too much, I think. He might prefer they stay collapsed, making his job easier, though that might just switch our prerogative to helping him bottleneck or further seal the deep passages.
>>
>>36373344
yea. that is pretty odd.
i expected at least some siblings to take a normal time to evolve
>>
>>36373344
REQM explained this. A young monsters XP growth rate is set in the first month or so of life. If they grind for XP in their first weeks, they will gain levels at an increased rate for the rest of their lives.

If they don't do that, they will forever gain XP at a slower rate.

Our siblings got so much XP this early because of us and Spidermom.

1, Spidermom is a lot more permissive than Spidergranny was. Spidergranny nearly had a fit when Spidermom found a dungeon.
Spidermom never had the chance to gain much XP in her first weeks / months.

2, We aren't exactly a normal newborn monster. We have the memories and experience of an adult. In our past life we were also a bit of a ca/tg/irl. When we woke up in MAGIC FANTASY LAND.... We, we just HAD to explore and try new things. We gaind XP at a retarded rate and dragged most of our family along for the ride.

All our siblings have had much more active childhoods because of us.
>>

>>36373450
Votes been called for a while now.
>>
>>36373451
He is keeping something trapped down below, is it because he can't destroy it... or because he is too big to fit down there and destroy it?
or because its not an it so much as entire races like drow and illithids.
>>
>>36373081
I feel kind of bad for Aria, honestly.
>>
>>36373461
>Our siblings got so much XP this early because of us and Spidermom.
Thats all not true for a brothers though. We all know that stuff, its why our sisters are so fast in gaining levels.
But our brothers weren't influenced by us at all, they had completly normal arachen childhoods, so our acitivity doesn't explain why they evolve faster.
>>
>>36373461
>Spidermom never had the chance to gain much XP in her first weeks / months.
Didn't she actually find that first dungeon very early and used to always get into trouble? I mean, that is what lia said.

>All our siblings have had much more active childhoods because of us.
but it wasn't really all of them. with the exception of taking sarah to the starwell where we all went, some of them have hardly had anything dangerous to fight and as such shouldn't have such a high XP multiplier
>>
>>36373344
She didn't take thirty years to evolve the first time, though, she gave birth to us during her first evolution. She evolved between meeting dad and going on ~adventures~ with him.

No-one is Lyra reckless.

"No ones big like Lyra,"
"No ones strong like Lyra,"
"No ones quite so astoundingly reckless like Lyra!"

"When she was a girl she ate 3 dozen gnomes"
"Every day so that she would grow large!"
"And now that she's grown she eats FIVE dozen gnomes"
"So she's roughly the size of a barge!"
>>
You follow her in, your own chitinous legs clattering in time with hers as you move. The doorway, as large as it is, is nothing compared to the inside of the building- Your eyes let you see easily in the dark, but it's truly massive.

How many people came through here each day? What did they need something like this for?
You'd probably have to rebuild the city to find out. Maybe if you just-

No. Nope. That's Nin getting to you.

Speaking of, the little moth has fallen silent behind you, turning this way and that, trying to peer through the gloom. You glance from her to your Mother, her fingers exploring the carvings marking each wall, and you smile. A little self satisfaction is healthy, yes.

And now you're doing it in your thoughts, too.

You give a mental shrug, and raise a fist over your head- It only takes a split second to ignite, dancing lights flaring out, casting twisting shadows over each carving.

Nin gasps, one hand resting on your shoulder, and Mom steps away from the wall, backing up till she can see the whole of the wall, standing breathless as she takes in the artwork of your long lost neighbours.

It hasn't changed since the first time, but that doesn't make it any less amazing. Flowing water, towering trees, monsters of all shapes and sizes at work, hand in hand. Even Seranthis is there, a spider taller than the trees.

The little moth speaks, her grip tightening, her voice whispery in the cavernous room.

"This? This is what was lost?"
She doesn't wait for an answer. She's standing now, her head tilting back to take in the walls around you. There's a moment if quiet before she speaks again.

"You need to bring it back. Even a piece. No matter how small. If we could have this again-"

>Take her hand.
>Maybe someday, yes?
>That would take more than one spider, Nin.

>a lot of stuff everyone already knew

The question is why our brothers, who weren't trained by mom nor got dragged on crazy adventures gain so fast.
And its a good question, REQM stressed in the past how they are examples of regular arachne behavior.
Maybe dad urged them to train on their own?
>>
>>36373344
Mom was locked in the house until long after her xp rate was locked in very low because of the dungeon incident.

Nalia however is actively helping her kids grow, be it via training, hunting, or just letting them out of the nest to do what they wish at an early age.

>>36373511
Yes, and then her mom sat on her until she was fully grown, ie locked in at 1/2 way to first evolution because grannyspider wouldnt let her leave the nest anymore.
>>
>>36373534
>Take her hand.
>>
>>36373534
>No. Nope. That's Nin getting to you.
yess... give in to the nin side of the force.
>>
>>36373537
>Mom was locked in the house until long after her xp rate was locked in
Thats definitly not true, mom run away a lot to go on adventure while in our age, Jins mom explicitly told us that. She wasn't quite as crazy as we are, but the point is, that she definitly was at least as active as our brothers.
>>
>>36373504

I think it has implied that every child of mom's litter has gotten a bit competitive. Aria is the strongest example, but I think the others subconsciously push themselves to try to stand out a little when compared to she who sacks ruins at a week old and whose butt smolders and rumbles in her sleep.

They have their own adventures, I'm sure.

>>
>>36373535
Like I said. Spidermom is a lot more permissive than Spidergranny and we're clearly having an influence on our family. Direct and indirect influence.
>>
>>36373535
The brothers got a big bump from the necromancer fight, as well as the escalating competitions.
Even Elle is grinding away exp with her weaving-

The big thing here through, is that the updates covered about 2.5-3 weeks, there, and their first month is now over. And with it, the bonus EXP and gain rate.

The brothers are probably a week or so out from evolving, and Elle won't hit it for a month or so.

Maybe they do. But they don't have to compete with, well, US.

We're clearly having some influence on the rest of the family. The fact that Moms parenting style seems to encourage growth a lot more than grannys did would also be a huge factor.

I'd like that but I suspect they would avoid Spider like the plague.

Given the fact that most Lizards are suicidally aggressive towards us, most Arachne would probably have developed a Kill on Sight police towards them.

Any Lizard smart enough to realize his people are a bunch of retards would probably be smart enough to head in the opposite direction the moment he spotted a Spider.

>tiny Cockney lamias

Yeessss!
>>
>>36373994

I think few people travel to the northern mountains, likely due to the monsters becoming increasingly fierce. I think the pastebin even makes mention that that region of the world is virtually uninhabited or unknown.
>>
>>36373986
i have no idea who is what on that map, but the two red circles are very far from each other in terms of actual travel time

also, so what if its a straight shot? we need to visit the elves to connect with dads family and we need to explore the forest more fully. to get a better handle of arachne culture, meet all the other interesting forest races (of which we are barely scratching the surface of), meet mom's extended family. explore dungeons and ruins.

then there is the whole underdark thing going on and the moth slave trade

The Harpies don't control the whole outer edge of the Forest. Just this area.

But nothing stopping us taking an indirect route if we want.
>>
>>36374054
I think wearing the tiny lamia as a scarf was automatically assumed at this point.
>>
>>36374034
Sounds like a challenge to me.
And I think traveling the forest should be our first trip, there is so much to find there, especially the other forest realm races Lyra keeps wondering about.

>>36374050
>we need to visit the elves to connect with dads family
I'm not sure about "need", we probably will at some point, but its not really a pressing agenda, considering we don't even know about them IC as far as I remember.
Might come soon though, if we ask about dads name.

>>36374075
Its not about control, harpies are the only forest race that still lives at the outer edge of the forest, since they get along with humans the best. So if any forest race lives at the edge, its harpies.
>>
>>36374050

There's a lot of potential opportunities for exploration in this quest and no real correct way to go about them. We'll inevitably have to leave out certain things and come back to them later, but we'll burn that bridge when we get to it.

My vote is for dwarves, but seeing the elves or our spider family also sound neat.
>>
>>36374050
We are basically close to the ruins indicated in the forest. The elves live on that "island" and the dwarfs apparently live on the south-eastern mountain range.

Deeper into the forest is definitly the hard-mode, as far as I can see.
Since all other routes take us into more "civilized" lands.
>>
>>36374107
My only wish aside from Nin's aspirations for Lyra to come true in the future is for Lyra to visit the elf family while she's still relatively young. I don't mind how that's accomplished or when it happens or what else she does before then.
>>
>>36374168
>while she's still relatively young
Why that?
>>
>>36374168
Sorry, I DO have clarifications on that: I want it to happen before she's two or three years old (if her life is measured in months then that's better, but I'm not insisting on that) and I want it to happen before elfdad has a chance to go back home.
>>
>>36374189
For maximum WTF from elfdad's family, specifically his mother, mainly. The older she is, the more likely they'd mentally justify her accomplishments, but the idea of how they'd react to the heavily armored, highly evolved spidergirl who has killed monsters the size of houses while claiming to be elfdad's daughter and only a few months old makes me giggle.
>>
>>36374195
>before elfdad has a chance to go back home
Considering he kinda ran away. I doubt thats going to happen any time in the next decade at best.
And he and mom are going back on adventure trail pretty soon anyway.

I don't see any particular reason why we should visit them " young", as far as we know elf grandma is not going to be a fan of us anyway.
She 'might' like Sara though.
>>
>>36374195
>>36374189

I don't know what works out best from the perspective of thematic pacing within the narrative. I imagine elves are bound to be a more complicated people than the dwarves, but can't say for certain. Granted our... earthy upbringing, I imagine the dwarves would make a better match for the person we are right now. However, it also might be refreshing to expand our horizons and then come back to our roots in the mountains.
>>
>>36374238
Eh, they will figure "monsterkin".
They're elves, they've seen shit.
>>
>>36374243
I explained my thought process >>36374238 , but yeah. Also, I don't think she'd be keen on Sara because she's basically exactly like elfdad. If there's any of the family she'd actually like (which I'm doubting) it would probably be Elle, who's the most cosmopolitan of the siblings. Judging by what little I remember of the ask.fm (I should double check, honestly), though, I think elfgrandpa would like Sara, and elfaunt would adore all of the kids just because of the conniptions they give her mother.
>>
>>36374257
I don't think "thematic pacing" is a concern here.
I do think it makes the most sense for Lyras adventures and plot hooks so far to go into the forest first. Her interests so far have largely been 1. hunting and 2. Forest realm.
She keeps wondering about what other races live deeper in the forest too, and with our possible chat with Seranthis coming, it would make the most sense to me.
After that its largely a matter of interests, I prefer dwarfs, since it would help Lyra to develop more, on the other hand, elves would be cool for Sara.
>>
>>36374291
>, I don't think she'd be keen on Sara
I figure she might like Sara since mages are a big deal for elves, and she had hoped for some upwards movement, socially, from her son.
So a mage grandchild would probably find more favor with her.
>>
>>36374263
But that's boring and not fun and elfgrandma still doesn't know that dad got a bunch of kids with an arachne and that the fiancee from the other family they were going to make an alliance with turned out to be some halfelf that went "nope", ran away, became an adventuress, and then ended up charging into battle riding on the daughter of the guy she was engaged to.that was a lie.

>>36374329
You forgot to quote the last part of the sentence, which explains why I don't think she'd like Sara.
>>
>>36374306

I'd encourage Sara to stick around and keep Elle company for a little while while we go out exploring. We can try to move the core back to the tree with our newfound earth magic, leave her to study that and the stones in the mine, then come back to bring her (and possibly Elle) to visit the elves (who would presumably be huge buyers of silk).
>>
>>36374366
I will laugh my ass off if REQM makes that canon
>>
>>36374366
I didn't forget it, it just didn't matter to what I was going to say.
I'm not disagreeing that she might dislike her because of that, I guess "liking her" is probably to stron, its more, be less resentful, because at least she is another mage.
>>
>>36374393

We really need to bring Lann to visit the woods sometime before the entire family runs off.

>>36374366

Speaking of which, I'd love to bring Sara along for the road. At the same time, it just kind of feels like we have enough followers for right now. Anymore for REQM to switch between on a regular basis might drive him nuts.
>>
>>36374393
Its funny, but doesn't work because elf grandma wouldn't have tried to marry her son to a half-elf for social upgrade, that doesn't really make sense.

>>36374373
We're gonna drag Sara with us. Period. She is our party mage, every party needs a mage. And you learn more magic adventuring instead of studying, everyone knows that.
Just look at her skill gain, she made huge leaps adventuring with us, and slowed to a crawl without us..
>>
If I recall correctly, Elfgreatgrandpa would approve of his son's arachne wife, because the arachne still rule the forest, right?
Having him talk with Nin should lead to hilarious results.
>>
>>36374373
>I'd encourage Sara to stick around and keep Elle
Oh no. Elle got Aria to keep her company.
Aria and us called dibs on the respective imouto on the first hunt.

And I really want to bring Sara along, it just wouldn't feel right leaving her behind.
>>
>>36374453
>it just kind of feels like we have enough followers for right now
Thats kinda true, but I think five member party works fine. It would just mean we won't be dragging any additional permanent party members with us.
>>
>>36374536
Which five? Lyra, Lann, Jin, Nin, Shezska?
>>
>>36374536
its already crowded enough just with the spiderbutt colony.

we seriously don't need any more.
>>
>>36374586
I didn't assume we would bring Lann deeper into the forest.
So we would bring Jin,Sheszka, Nin and Sara.
>>
>people wanting to visit dwarves and elves and shit
Sure sure whatever. That's not important.

What -is- important is we use our breath-holding abilities to sneak into the village by river, and then startle people.
>>
>>36374536

If we had the whole, mobile fortress thing going for us, I think that we would be in better shape for bringing along a bigger party. Kind of hoping the dwarves can hook us up with an airship, or at least provide the inspiration.
>>
>>36374586
I don't think we bring Lann into the deep forest expedition, we can show her our nest and the waterfall, but deeper into the forest with her doesn't seem like agood idea.
And I'm not even sure she woudl want to, she's got a job, technically.
>>
>>36374615
>implying Lyra won't be the mobile land fortress
She just needs to get huge.
>>
>>36374586
>Lann
I don't think Lann is made for the forest adventure.
She could, probably, but we have no idea how long it takes, and she isn't used to it like we are.
>>
>>36374598
No Lyra needs to grow more spider butt
>>
>>36374611
>use our breath-holding abilities to sneak into the village by river, and then startle people

We are doing this. Failing to do this is not an option. It's happening.
>>
>>36374606

Assuming that's our next goal, I kind of take your point, but it's too soon to see what people are most keen on next.

>>36374611

This sounds like a humorous, yet terrible idea, moreso given that Nin will likely begin shouting about the Queen's invasion and clever tactics (possibly before we have even successfully gotten inside the city walls.
>>
>>36374611
I don't want the guards to get in trouble because they failed to spot the arachne infiltration.
>>
I want it to be us and the spiderbutt inhabitants. keep adding more people and the combat becomes boring and overly complicated.

ie: Lyra, Jin, Nin, Sheszka.
>>
>>36374656
>We are doing this. Failing to do this is not an option. It's happening.

"Dear guild leaders, today the forest spiders practiced amphibious landings in our villiage. Officially stated reason: Boredom."
>>
>>36374598
Hopefully the skull will get bigger eventually. Enough space to act as a small tent for 3-4 people if you pack them in. I don't think they'd really mind being packed in.
>>
>>36374659
>Assuming that's our next goal
I honestly can't see anything else at this point.
Maybe if we talk with dad about his name we got reason for the elves, but IC we have little to no reason to visit the dwarves atm.
That probably comes when we visit the city with Elle or something.
>>
>>36374475
>Its funny, but doesn't work because elf grandma wouldn't have tried to marry her son to a half-elf for social upgrade, that doesn't really make sense.
My justification, if we were assuming it was a possibility, would be that she didn't know that the assumedly more prominent family would be engaging elfdad to a half-elven bastard from a satellite family. And even if she did, if the family was of a higher status of her own she'd grit her teeth but end up grinning and bearing it.

Again, all hypothetical: I personally doubt it's the case, as it would be awfully serendipitous, but it would still make me giggle.

>>36374586
Not sure if Lann is coming, but if you add Sara then there's six potential party members, plus any assorted critters Lyra discovers on her travels and accidentally pulls into her team via headrubbing.

... Has Lyra touched Lann's ears yet? She did do extensive leg touching but that doesn't count because she was asleep and drunk and Lann's legs were nearly broken.

>>36374606
>>36374626
>>36374646
I would love to bring Lann along on adventures but I'm not married to it and she is slightly more "normal" than most (even if she's capable of burying a half dozen arrows in a bear in a matter of seconds while riding a charging arachne). She's fun as a guest party member, though.
>>
>>36374709
>She's fun as a guest party member, though.
She definitly is. I hope we can get her to accompany us on the trip to the city when we make one. She would make a great city guide.
>>
>>36374709
>and she is slightly more "normal" than most
Forgot to add "of the people Lyra hangs out with" there. Whoops.
>>
>>36374694
It already houses 3, one in each eye socket and one below the top of the skull.

Which is all we need for an adventure party, + 1 guest member that can rotate if we need a 5th.
>>
>>36374680

Your hand slides up, over your shoulder, catching hers and covering it entirely. Nin breaks from her little trance, look down to your entwining fingers.

She blushes almost as easily as you do.

You give her hand a little squeeze, smiling up at her- which is something of a new sensation.

"There is time, yes? Lots and lots of time."
She nods, her antennae bobbing lightly in time with her head.
"And besides, I am thinking this is more than a single spider job, yes?"

Her smile is slow, warm. There's a moment of happiness in her expression, her fingers tightening around yours, her thumb stroking the side of your hand.

And then it's gone, her grin splitting, her eyes falling slightly, slyly.
"Oh, of course. That is why you'll take the crown! A city needs people, and people need a Queen-"
"That is not a thing-"
"There's no need to be shy! It is just-"
"I am not being shy-"

"Oh, shush shush shhhh."
She presses a finger to your lips, muffling your words as she speaks over you.
"This is just the beginning! Oh, I am going to need a book- This is history, Lyra."

You groan and turn back to your parents, and the giggling moth settles back down, next to your friend. You make for your family, your Dad already next to your mother, more magical lights rising illuminating the room better than your fire could.
>>
>>36374744
Sara wouldn't fit on our butt anyway.

You let the magic fade as you walk, trying very hard to ignore the conversation behind you.
"I think Sheszka can be 'The Most Loyal'. Hmmmmm- We need a royal herald though-"
"What do heralds do, yes?"
"Ah, They announce the queen, recount stories, that sort of thing."
"I can do that, yes. I tell the village all the stories."
"Well, that settles it, then."

You don't need to look back to know Jin is nodding in time with her counterpart. Sheszka trots up next to you and smiles, and you grin back as you reach your parents.

"-but what do you think it means?"
"Honestly, it just looks like any other mural- I understand you're excited because it's the old city, but there's nothing identifying the building. It's probably just art."
"Agh. This is a new level of frustrating, yes."
"That would be because history isn't something you can smash."
"Don't push your luck, you pointy-eared-"

You cough.
"Ah- Lyra?"
"Are we going down?"
"It's probably a good idea, dear. We should be able to figure out what the building was below."
"Hmmmm-"

I figure the mountains would provide a way to "organically" discover this sort of flight, if anywhere in the world. The dwarves natural curiosity with fire and earth magic has probably pushed them to a refined edge in architecture and metallurgy. Combine that with our flying cousins in the mountain, and it's likely that at least one person had an accidental discovery of flying over a dwarven vent and suddenly experiencing a huge updraft.

Combine Lyra's adventurous desire to keep up with a bit of future knowhow and you could justify the discovery. The materials, would be another matter entirely. Getting something at that scale to fly would also be beyond difficult and time consuming for Lyra's generally short attention span.

I figure out absolute best bet is if the dwarves are on friendly enough terms with the arachne to have already refined this discovery into a dwarven weather balloon.
>>
>>36375022
>She can experiment plenty without us around
Not really, without dads assistance there isn't much she can do.

If we adventure long enough, sooner or later we'll want to cross a great ocean or reach some sky islands. Then is the time for an airship!

Buy a little sloop, making a propella and rudder with our metalbending and forging skills would be easy. Powered by a wind stone or something.

Spend a few weeks weaving a fuckhuge balloon and inflate it with a fire stone.

We air spider!

>>36375445
The main problem with the airship would be it would avoid all adventure. Travelin on foot has way more adventure potential than flying over everything.

>>36375497

I tend to agree with you. There's a reason why the airship always crashes in pretty much every story.

Anyway, I'm not huge on the idea, despite my long blurb. I'm much more happy with us making minimal use of whatever future knowledge we may possess and operating like a standard adventurer. I just imagine that people are going to want to begin keeping far too many people too close to our chest, and at that time, it's much easier for REQM to have a place they can be doing things.

Granted our ADD approach to life in trying to do all the things all the time, I imagine that even a nearby city won't keep our soon to be hordes in close enough proximity for Lyra to not leave them in the dust.

"I can, ah, probably show you the cavern, yes?"

Your mother cocks an eyebrow.
"That was a very hesitant probably, little one."

You shrug.
"There was more than a few paths, yes? I think it might go everywhere beneath the ruins."
"How did you find your way before?"
"I followed the dust on the ground, yes. And left webs to mark the way back."

Mom and Dad share a glance, before they look back at the descending stairs in sync.
Nin giggles.

"I can try the earth magic again- Like I used on the dungeon. Maybe?"
"It is worth a shot, yes?"

Mom pokes Dad forwards, and you can feel the mana beginning to form as he holds out an open hand.

You reach forwards, inhaling slowly as you pull the magic into your hands, letting it swirl in the air before you. You shut your eyes, even your breath, and squeeze your hand into a fist, tightening as you let the spell fly loose, whispering the words you need.

The ground beneath you thrums in time with your heartbeat, and you can see the tunnels beneath you unfold, layering over one another, hundreds of strands beneath the ruined surface. Some stop short, collapses, others simply drop into nothing- The effect is dizzying.

There's too many, far too many. Your brow tightens as you focus, trying to bring the information under control. You start from yourself. The stairs.
The path below. The feeling of the flow of water. Twisting, turning. The cavern.

You let out a breath you weren't aware you were holding.

"I have it. One path, anyway- There are far, far too many below, yes."
"Too many?"
"Hundreds- I could not even- It was too much."

Dad strokes his chin, brushing his fingers through stubble.
"It's a useful spell, in any case. Maybe if you could work it through an enchantment- On paper! Or a piece of metal or stone- a map that forms as you move-"
He's already pulling a book free from his bag, a quill pen practically appearing in his hands.

Mom taps your shoulder.
"He gets like this, yes? Ignore him."
She gestures to the stairs, and you nod, taking the first step down.

"-All these channels- A sewer, maybe? Or something to bring water to peoples homes? Running water to a whole city- The dwarves have something like it for money, but-"
"But it's for money, yes. What about the elves, then?"
"Magic, magic everywhere. For the most part. Spirit stones, or just enchantments. If everyone had the same things, the nobles wouldn't have anything to brag about."

Mom laughs.
"Lyra, little one. Anything ahead?"

You shake your head.
Hopefully she can see you through the crowd on your back.

Sheszka and Dad both abandoned the floor when you reached the flooded corridor. There was some awkward shuffling on your back, but Nin settled for sitting behind you, cross-legged with her back against yours.

"The cavern is close, yes? This is where I met him."

Both parents fall quiet as the hall opens up. The collapsed stone, the running water.

That comparison makes no sense at all. Like, whatsoever.

The issue with strapping a sword to your head is that you can't really fight with a sword that strapped to your head.
A limitation that doesn't exist for a additional set of arms, which works just as well as the first pair you got.

Okay, calm down for a second anon, and you will realise why that doesn't make any sense.
You don't "strap" the arms to anything.
You just get a second set, whhich works just as well as the other set you are already using.

You don't wield swords with your head, because you can't properly move the sword like that. While your additional arms aren't any less suable than the ones you already have.
You don't "strap" them to anything.

Alright then, writing!
>>
>>36376396
getting a second set of arms on our torso is literally strapping arms on there.

Otherwise it would no longer be even similar to a human torso, as it would have to be entirely reconfigured to have four limbs.

If you want to strap extra arms on, I want to strap extra swords on.
>>
>>36376352
Because the problem with strapping a sword to your head, is that you can't move your head as much as your arms?
While you can use the arms just as well as your other arms.
>>
>>36376423
And you can't move any of your arms as much as your head if you had four of them.

>>
>driving this thread into autosage
inb4 >anon has bitched about evolutions since the dawn of re:monster quest
>>
>>36376459
There is a difference between making sense and consistency.
The problem with having multiple arms is the way it would need to connect to your torso, which can easily be handwaved just as much as the way our upper body connects to our thorax in non-sensical ways.
Strapping a sword to your head, would require your head to move completly different froma regular one, which we know it doesnt.
>>
>>36376459

Let's not have system wars in the middle of the thread, please. Anon thinks mutli-arms are cool and functional. Other anons don't agree with that sentiment. This difference in opinion is perfectly fine, but shouldn't eat up a large chunk of the thread.
>>
>>36376482
>in a realistic scenario
But it is anot a realistic scenario.
Our body already attaches random limbs in ways that don't actually work. While our head isn't anymore capable of sword wiedling than a regular one.
So additional arms work within the established premise, while head-swords don't.
>>
>>36376500
Both of those things require the respective parts to work completely different from regular parts in non-sensical ways.

Please attend to the internal consistency of your argument before insisting your four arms thing is super effective and not just a thing you think looks cool.
>>
>>36376482
extra arms would severely limit motion range. for example, if you had rib-arms you could not perform a haymaker punch with your shoulder arms

>>36376500
>Extra arms can easily be handwaved
>Head motion cannot
No, extra arms and head motion are equally silly to handwave. you can, absolutely, handwave them both and say "magic" or "not human alien".
But your insistance that the arms are somehow less silly is born of your own ignorance on how arms work
>>
>>36376535
>Both of those things require the respective parts to work completely different from regular parts
The difference being that we already KNOW our body attaches limbs in non-sensical ways, just as we know our head doesn't move different, one thing works already and the other doesn't.
>>
>>36376531
>But it is anot a realistic scenario.
He clearly meant plausible

People confuse the two often because in non fiction the two are indistinguishable. But in fantasy the term plausible or internally consistent should be used instead.
>>
>>36376542
>born of your own ignorance on how arms work
We had established that biomechanics aren't applicable in this discussion, why do you keep trying to bring biomechanics into it?
The head motion thing doesn't work because we know our head doesn't move like that.
The arm thing can work, because we know our body can internally attach limbs in non-sensical ways.
>>
>>36376551
>The difference being that we already KNOW our body attaches limbs in non-sensical ways,
That is not true. our limbs work just as sensibly as our head does.
A torso is not a limb. and honestly, we do NOT know that our torso/spiderbutt connection is nonsensical, as it has never been elaborated on in detail. its just a "there" thing.
>>
>>36376542

The solution is clear: We grow additional arms... on our head.
>>
>>36376589
>we do NOT know that our torso/spiderbutt connection is nonsensical

I think this is the point where we end this conversation, because we entered the realm of reaching REALLY hard.
>>
>>36376551
>we KNOW our body attaches limbs in non-sensical ways
Actually, we don't. It could very well make sense.

There's nothing STOPPING a human torso from working on a spider body, assuming the internal wiring is right.

There's tons of things stopping a human torso from having extra arms, assuming the internal wiring is right, because the SHAPES DO NOT FIT TOGETHER.
>>
>>36376279
I think the idea of a four armed torso on a spider lower body to be really cool, as long as it's Asura style arms and not, say, a smaller secondary pair protruding from the join between the human torso and the spider parts.

>>
>>36376739 cont.

>>
>>36376700
No head biomechanics aren't the reason why strapping a sword to it is a stupid idea.
Its a stupid idea for the same reason you don't strap a sword to your arm. Because it limits the range of movement, you can't properly wield a sword strapped to your head regardless of how much you can move it.
While additional arms function like additional arms.
>>
>>36376722
>that system could easily work without any magic whatsoever.
No anon, no it couldn't
Any hypothetical system we would devise there, would not work anything like how Lyras body works.
There is a way to make hydraulic muscles and muscle fibers work together, but not like Lyras body does it.>>36376739
>what is wrong with a special hybrid system?
Nothing at all, only that it wouldn't work like Lyras body.
>>
>>36376698

>>
>>36376761
Actually, additional arms are exactly as stupid as strapping swords to yourself, for the range of movement reasons you have cited.
>>
>>36376789
>Any hypothetical system we would devise there, would not work anything like how Lyras body works.
What do you mean by that? The only thing we know about our internal organs are that they are internal.
That we produce web from our butt, and venom from our fangs. and food goes into the mouth hole
>>
>>36376789
Who the fuck are you to say "oh, it certainly doesn't work like that"?

A hybrid system with hydraulic muscles and stretchy fine tuning muscles could very easily work without any magic assistance at all. Other than, maybe, to set such a system up in the first place.

For all we could know, that's exactly how lyra works, as the muscular system discussion was based entirely around explaining how lyra does the things she does without falling into "lol magic".
>>
>>36376761
>biomechanics aren't the reason
>Because it limits the range of movement
I don't think you quite understand what the word biomechanics means if you think "limited range of movement" has nothing to do with biomechanics.
>>
>>36376790
The discussion back then was basically this.
One anon liked the idea that Lyras entire body uses hydraulic muscles to explain her upper bodys inhuman strength, to which it was pointed out that hydraulic muscles couldn't move the limbs like a human body does, so we would need both.
I can't find the thread right now, but it was part of the muscle girl argument we had at some point.
>>
>>36376789

How would such a system work, in your opinion? Is there any sort of specific natural case you would be citing?
>>
>>36376846
The problem isn't with your head, its with the "strapping" part. A sword you hold, is obviously more mobile then one "strapped to".
>>
>>36376850
not that guy, but in previous discussion, the hydraulic musculature systems of insects and spiders were brought up.

This, if applied to the human torso, would mean lyra's upper body and arms have the full strength of her legs, as they are all powered by the same central muscle in the torso.
>>
>>36376848

How does hydraulic muscle typically activate differently than the sinew pulley system that defines our own musculature? I've seen a hydraulically driven robot arm using air bladders (cool, yet freaky), but I'm not sure how it inherently differs besides probably needing some sort of exoskeleton to function.
>>
Nobody is arguing against people holding additional arms in their hands, either.
We are arguing that strapping additional arms would get in the way of all sorts of movement ranges, make fisticuffs much more difficult, and most importantly, look really dumb. Our design is already FAR too busy.
>>
>>36376826
>A hybrid system with hydraulic muscles and stretchy fine tuning muscles could very easily work without any magic assistance at all.
No it wouldn't. Hydraulic muscles pull the limbs, while humanoid muscles work by the muscle fibres contracting, any time the hydrualic muscles move, they would pull at the fibres and interfere with the contraction.
>>
>>36376848
interesting.
its worth mentioning that the human body already has several different types of muscle. and some animals have more.

>>
>>36376896
>hydraulics pull the limbs
>muscle fibres work by contracting

And are you aware the discussion from previous threads already covered how the stretchy muscles are only there to control fine movement, and are stretchy so as to get out of the way when the hydraulics are active?

>>36376850
There is no precedent for such a system.
It possible in "theory", in sofar that you might be able to set up a system like that, but its completly in the realm of things that could maybe work.
The issue is keeping the pull of the hydraulic muscles from stopping the fibers contraction. Which would mean you would need something somewhere in the place between the two systems that stopps that.
At best by just completly keeping the muscles systems apart.
>>
>>36376953
>it was pointed out how and why it can't work like that
Not really, it was actually generally agreed it could work like that very easily.

May produce some jittery movement assuming it was poorly made hydraulics, but otherwise it would work A-OK. We just moved away from that because dual system was cooler and allowed for musclegirls.

>>36376975
no, and in fact it should.
there is no reason for the internal organs to be "spider in the spider part and human in the human part"

also, human muscles are more practical for certain things at the sizes involved.
>>
>>36376975
The idea was that hydraulic muscles allow for greater exertion of force, which was supposed to explain how Lyras humanoid torso is so inhumanly strong.

>>36376993
No, we haven't, the discussion wasn't even that extensive, stop making this shit up.
>>
>>36376982
Please read up on how muscles work.
They contract, becoming smaller and more dense, in order to have the effect of PULLING on our bones.
>>36376995
>>36376975
>anything to stop spider body from having human muscles
It would be much weaker than current lyra exploits demonstrate?
And the muscles don't really fit in spider legs properly?
>>
>>36376974
>May produce some jittery movement
Which was exactly the reason why we said it wouldnt work in that thread, because Lyra has shown no issue with fine control.
>>
>>36376995

It was a point of idle curiosity on my part. I'm not sure if the carapace would be unable to handle the contraction/expansion of the muscle in the same way. However, I am a materials and mechanical engineer. Bloody bits aren't exactly my forte.
>>
>>36377015
>of PULLING on our bones.
Yes, but hydraulic muscles don't do that which is the point. If the hydraulic muscles are connected to the contracting fibers, it would obviously hinder the contracting, since hydraulic muscles only pull.
>>
>>36377009
>the thing we've thoroughly discussed and come to a conclusion on is wrong because I didn't read it and I really want four arms

We've already been over full explanations for how hydraulics would work. The only actual downside was a SUPPOSED jitteriness of movement, as
>>36377021
says.
Which may or may not even be there at all, and was just taken for granted because we didn't want to argue for hours on end about how jittery exactly biological hydraulics are.
it's not very much
>>
>>36376930
Its pretty ironic that posting the chart itself is an act of ad-hominem.

You never really made an argument. You just stated that biomechanics must apply to A and not to B, because you said so.
This is not an argument, and as such it cannot so much be refuted as pointed at and laughed at
>>
>>36377045
Lets not get into the pretension area here. We didn't "thoroughly" discuss it. It was a few anons throwing ideas back and forth for a few dozen posts.
>>
>>36377051
You're an ad hominem.
>>
>>36377015
>>36377039
You are assuming a lack of internal skeleton inside the spider body.
it can have both an internal skeleton and a carapace simultaneously, since she isn't actually an IRL spider

also, since gods have been confirmed in that setting, we actually do have intelligent design
>>
>>36377043
No it wouldn't?
There is absolutely no reason hydraulics would hinder the standard pulling movements of the human body. The only thing you'd lose out on is the "flex" effect where you get huge muscles when you contract, if the connection points are set up properly.

Which is the primary reason the secondary muscle system was brought up. Gotta have dem musclegirls.
>>
>>36377089

Oh snap! Someone just got... wait, what are we doing?
>>
>>36377098
Actually, bones would just make them not-fit-right even more in the arachnid thing.>>36376930
>>
>>36377039
The main issue is that human muscle fibers don't really work with a exoskeleton.
For similar, but opposite, reasons why hydraulic muscles don't work that well with a internal skeleton.

Now if Lyras spider body HAS a internal skeleton, somehow, that would be different, but I doubt it.

You take a few more steps, and stop, looking onto the shadows of the cavern, towards the rushing sound of water. This is it.
"Here."

"Hah?"
"This is where he was, yes. I fought a centipede. Or something like it- and I left, following the trail. And when we came back... Seranthis was here. Eating the monster."

The floor still has marks- If you didn't know what you were looking for, you'd never see it, just accepting it as the rough stone floor. But there is twin scores along the ground, one set for each leg.

You let your leg step into one of the furrows- Even as big as you've grown, even one of the claws...

You close your eyes and lean back, feeling the ground beneath you, the water ahead, the ruins behind. Your awareness expands like a bubble, and you can feel the tremors, the water dripping, the slow movement of the earth like it was your skin. You search for the thundering steps, the tearing claws of a spider taller than trees, but there isn't anything there. At least as far as you can feel.

Your eyes slide open again, and you watch as your mother and father explore around you, each watching the other's back cautiously as they move.

"This isn't part of the city, yes. A collapse, maybe?"
"It seems likely. You said that the queen did all this?"
"It's what is passed down, yes."

Dad pauses, standing straighter as he looks all around.
"It's hard to imagine what kind of magic could do all this. The highest level of spells? Something like what Lyra can do now?"
"They said she shook mountains with her steps, yes."
"That sounds more like myth than history, though."

Mom shrugs.
"A spider taller than a tree sounds like myth as well, but our daughter met him. It is hard to say."
Both look at you as she speaks, and you grab the lull in conversation for yourself.
>>
>>36377176
"There is a place above, yes? Where it started."
"What started?"
You wave around you, trying to encompass the ruins themselves.
"All of the, the this, yes? The ruins. There is a circle, a perfect circle, and beyond that the ground is broken."

Mom looks around, to the fallen corridor you squeezed through weeks ago. And a fair amount of height and spider size ago.
"I am thinking we cannot go any further now, yes? Dear, will you remember the path?"
Dad nods.
"You can rely on me for that, at least."

They smile at each other in a way that tells you the nest will be a few people short tonight. That's your cue!

"Shall we go back, then?"
"Hmm, yes. I think that would be a good idea, little one."

Yup, she didn't even look at you as she said that.
Is ruins exploring why you have so many siblings?

You turn back to the broken corridor, picking your way up the slick stones. Let's just not think about that, yes?

If the hydraulic muscles pull at the muscle fibers from one direction, that would obviously interfere with the muscle fibers contractin.
UNles, of course, we have a hybrid system in which we have something between those muscle systems that prevents that. Which was why we said we need a hybrid system last time.
The idea was, that something translating the exerted force of the hydraulic muscles in the thorax could be translated over the backmuscles, leading to greater upper body strength, at least in the arms.
That sounds nice in theory, in practice however, such a system would have a lot of problems, and wouldn't actually explain Lyras massive strength, since the main issue is that it wouldn't explain how her human muscles handle the stress.

>>36377219
A. a pure hydraulic system would work just fine, and probably wouldn't be jittery at all. We just assume jitteriness for
B. we need secondary muscles to have musclegirls.

We've already discussed time and time again that to handle the additional stress of hydraulics, all the human muscles would need to do is stretch. Something extremely common in nature. Hell, humans -standardly- have stretchy muscles, and are encouraged to stretch them even further regularly.

>>
>>36377251

And as we said last time, if the human muscles would be more stretchy to avert the stress, it would negate the actual gain since then only very little force would actually be transmitted.

>A little running, and you could spend the night in the village. You wouldn't even have to pretend you don't notice your parents sneaking out.

grab some dinner, show Nin the falls, then head over to Jin's house for the night to not only make sure her mother doesn't hunt us down but also to let Nin experience sleeping in a human home. Then we can show her the rest of the village proper tomorrow. and We'll actually be awake because we won't have to hear our parents practicing the monster mash.

>>
>>36377370
I guess it's real handy that, if you were actually reading posts in the thread mentioned, you'd see the stretchy muscles are for fine movement and not heavy lifting then, huh?

It seems the only problems with the design are from people who stopped reading midway through to talk about how much they disagree.

>>36377397
>and it wouldn't
But it explicitly does. The hydraulics have monstrous strength, and the stretchy muscles, as you have already rode on about multiple times, exert very little force.

They'd exert very little in the way of stopping the hydraulics, leaving them... monstrously strong.
>>
>>36377359
>And also wouldn't be a problem for brute force tasks
But there is no other musculature system. We have one in the thorax and one in the upper body. And the upper body one would need to be different to accomodate the different working of the one in the thorax.
Everything done with our upper body is done with its musculature system, which MAY be aided by the one in the thorax.

But HOW it can do so, is the question, and more stretchy muscles wouldn't do that, since it would fail at the basic premise, which is greater force.
>>
>>36377452
>no other musculature system
The entire fucking premise of this conversation is based on a hydraulic musculature system, and whether or not it is augmented by a human one.
>>
People seem a little torn-
How about dinner, and plans for tomorrow to grab Lann and visit the waterfall?
>>
>>36377429
>you'd see the stretchy muscles are for fine movement and not heavy lifting then, huh?
No, you fail to understand that the stretchy muscles would be required everywhere in the upper body to accomodate the pull from the hydraulic muscles. ALL OF THEM: Meaning the ones for fine movement, just as much as the others, unless we assume Lyra has a second seperate muscle system in her upper body.
Which would a completly new approach.
>>
>>36377452
Anon you are failing at reading comprehension pretty hard.
If the human muscles were stretchy, and hydraulics were worked in there as well, they would be able to exert the force.

Okay, now I realise I'm talking to an idiot.
If no force is transmitted through the humanoid muscles, then our arms wouldn't be any stronger, because we only have humanoid muscles in our arms.
Unless you want to assume she got hydraulic muscles there too, which she definitly would have noted by now.

>>
>>36377547
Oh, so this is because people never understood the hydraulics discussion in the first place.

the hydraulics MUSCLES would be in the thorax. Because that's how it works in spiders.

The muscles in the thorax would then push and pull all throughout the body using liquid tension and tubing systems.

The hydraulics themselves are not in lyra's upper body, but the upper body could very well be powered by them through simple tubing.
>>
>>36377569
>The entire fucking discussion is based on hydraulic muscles in lyra's thorax having pumps and tubes throughout her human body providing force.
No it wasn't. The discussion was based on the muscles in her thorax somehow supporting the upper body ones. The HOW is a different question, and clearly she would have noticed a entire additional set of muscles in her upper body.

Anon, you've never noted your arteries in your life. I can say this confidently because you are alive.
You may have noticed veins and capillaries, but your arteries should not be exposed. The only place you even get close to them is neck and some spots in the joints, and even then, it's hidden behind large slabs of meat and fat whenever possible.

Also, even if she noticed it, that doesn't mean she has to note it in character in quest
>>
>>36377609
Clearly a lot of people haven't understood it. But the fundamental issue remains, that you can't have a system that makes sense in which there is only hydraulic muscles in the thorax and fibers in the upper body, thats why we were talking about possible hybrid systems the entire time.
But any hybrid system that somehow goes far beyond her spider part, would need eplaining how Lyra hasn't noted it yet.
Because she definitly would something like a tubing system, which is why the hybrid system in her back was assumed, since she wouldn't notice as much there.

They would, because arteries and hydraulic muscles work completly different, your arteries aren't supposed to move anything.
If your arteries would expand several times their size anytime you "stress them", you would definitly notice.
>>
>>36377980
Uh, anon.
Hydraulic tubing doesn't expand when you use it. That would make it not work at all.
What expands (or contracts) is the working part of what the hydraulics are working on. In this case, a simple push/pull device on the joints, like muscles do. Which would feel an awful lot like you moved your joints with muscles.
>>
>>36377778
Muscles=/= arteries though.
Your arteries don't move that much, those tubes would need to, and you would definitly feel the displacement of your muscles caused by that.

Hydraulic tubes... aren't supposed to move anon.

I am all for composite Obsidian and Metal Butt. Basically become a beautiful flask spider filled with molten death. Also fits the kind of mage-y vibe I get from Lyra's recent fixation on fire and earth bending.
>>
>>36378042
>aren't supposed to move
The moment they get filled, they would become a lot less malleable, just like a tube that you fill with water due to the pressure.
So now, we would need to assume we are dealing with a lot of different tubes seperated from eachother so they don't hinder the movement of the joints once they get filled.
>>
>>36378129
Because someone insisted more arms were better for punching, causing all of this.

If you want to add an explanation for why the thing you think is cool should be there, be prepared.

Instead, just say it's cool. Or dumb.
>>
>>36378144

But those aren't Magey-type things, that's just Lyra being an Earth/Fire based monster, completely different.

It's like arguing that a Dragon is a Mage because it breathes fire.
>>
>>36378113
That, would not explain at all how she has greater strength then.
The tubes wouldn't be responsible for greater strength if you assume they are just there for delivery. So, it wouldn't actually answer the question of how she has greater strength.
>>
>>36378145
Anon that is exactly as much of a problem for hydraulic systems as being full of blood is for arterial systems.

Not as much as you are making it out to be.
>>
>>36378194
Actually, it would explicitly explain the greater strength, as the tubes can deliver tons of force to whatever mechanism they are currently operating.

Like, you know, hydraulics do.

I feel like this entire argument has come down to people who know how hydraulics work VS people who do not know how hydraulics work.
>>
>>36378180
The difference is that Lyra specifically had to learn and use earth magic in order to get earth spell like ability on levelup.
>>
>>36378129
Thank you anon, bout time somebody pointed out how absurdly full of bullshit these guy's points on the anatomy of the giant spiderbutt is.
>>

>>36378129
you guys just fucking wait.
We can only determine how monstergirls work using biology so quickly. We will solve your issues after this one.
>>
>>36378217
I think the issue is more that people haven't actually SEEN hydraulics in action and don't realise how it wouldn't work like that in a human body if you just transplant it 1:1.
>>
>>36378180

People get really particular on this, and it kind of drives me nuts. I don't understand how bending pure metal, earth, and fire by force of will doesn't strike people as being magically inclined. Whether it is raw, intuitive magic or magic born of carefully strung together, funny sounding words makes little difference to me. I consider both to be "mages" of a sort and wouldn't expect any common person to be able to discern the difference out of hand.

I get that there is a context for what constitutes a "mage" from a certain meta perspective, but seriously, both are magic.
>>
>>36378129
>Why don't you anal retentive anons just start arguing how Lyra and other Arachne is even capable of breathing with their large size and inefficient booklungs hmm? Or how Jin and the Harpies can fly and still be sturdy enough to NOT half their spines and rib cages be broken in half when tripping into a table? Or how Nin is even capable of flight with how pathetically weak her wing structure is for something of her size?
because at this very second we are arguing arachne muscleatures and not those other things. don't worry, we WILL argue them all later.
in fact, we had a big ass argument about moth and harpy wings and flight a couple of threads ago
>>
>>36378275
>he works with improperly secured hydraulic lines

They're not supposed to move while you are using them, anon. Tie those shits down.

As someone who has seen hydraulics, your disagreements with the system seem entirely based around just not wanting hydraulics, rather than any mechanical flaw of the system.
>>
>>36378129
>Or how Nin is even capable of flight with how pathetically weak her wing structure is for something of her size?
We had the moth wing-muscle discussion already.
>how Lyra and other Arachne is even capable of breathing with their large size and inefficient booklungs hmm?
She has two sets actually. Explains it perfectly.
>>
>>36378275

The cube-squared law makes fools of us all besides.
>>
>>36378331
>explains perfectly
Well, not quite.
The hours long duration of breath holding isn't explained.

My assumption is she trapped air bubbles somehow, and even that would be difficult and dangerous at said durations.
>>
>A ton of of shitflinging about hydraulic musculature and the physics of monster girls
HOLY SHIT GUYS
JUST TOP POSTING
>>
>>36378374
we can't, they asked us to explain hours long breath holding times, which is much harder to do than simple hydraulics.

We're going to have to get into CHEMISTRY and WATER TENSION discussion on this one.
>>
>>36378315
>Tie those shits down.
But the tying down is exactly the issue, how would you do that in a human body without interfering with all the other stuff there.

I actually have no issue wit the hydraulics, its just that the explanation, as given, doesn't actually work.
Hell, I LIKE the hydraulic hybrid system.
But hydraulics don't explain greater force exertion like Lyra shows, except in much more limited application.
>>
>>36378374

/tg/ is a gloriously silly, if often off-topic place. In the future, it might be kind to REQM to move these intensive discussions to another thread. Hell, I'd enjoy reading an archive about monster girl physiology, but having the thread die before it's complete because of giant arguments does us little good.
>>
>>36378409
I figure it's tied down somewhere alongside or inside of the muscles.
It'd work well, and would follow similar tubing systems to our current musculature, which requires massive pumps of liquid fuel (blood) to work anyway.

The only real visible difference might be additional muscle definition.
>>
I HAVE THE ANSWER TO ALL OF THIS STUPIDITY.

BEING A GIANT SPIDER BREAKS SCIENCE WITHOUT NEEDING TO UTILIZE MAGIC.

BEING A GIANT SPIDER MEANS YOU HAVE NO TRUE BIOLOGY, WHATEVER IS LEFT BEHIND IN YOUR CORPSE IS JUST A CLEVER DECOY TO DISGUISE THE TRUE REALITY WARPING THAT GOES ON INSIDE A GIANT SPIDER, NONE OF IT ACTUALLY WORKS.

SHUT THE FUCK UP.
>>
>>36378354
The question was how the large bodies are supported,a nd the answer was, two lungs.
The hours long thing, yeah. Thats a different issue.
But apparently we need to assume Lyras "humanoid" body, actually is only humans and has a huge amount of completly alien organs to explain the muscles thing. I mean, even letting aside the problems the hydraulic tubes rbing, where does even all that liquid come from? Thats a huge amount you would need for that much force.
>>
>>36378374
...actually, is this the first real 'shitstorm' in this quest? Or did I miss one? Because 46 threads is a pretty good run, if so.

This has been going for very nearly half the thread now, I believe. We really need to go back to considering what butts go where in the sleeping pile.
>>
>>36378470
>not assuming lyra's hydraulic body is full of alien organs

We have poison glands in our head and six eyes and exoskeleton on our arms.
>>
>>36378441
If we assume she wouldn't note on all kinds of weird shit going on in her arms, the tubes would be part of an explanation. But then you would also need completly different joints, and another subsystem that supports the bones, or a lot stronger bones.
>>
>>36378452

Anon, there is no need to yell. I'm done with the discussion as well, but what you are doing is hardly productive. The thread is in autosage, so them continuing literally does zero harm other than giving REQM something to laugh about as he types.
>>
>>36378486

Nah, the first real shitstorm was the Husbandofags getting all angry and shouty and superserious about the Waifufags, who were mostly using it as a joke.
>>
>>36378486
This isn't a shitstorm this is fantasy science.

We had exactly one shitstrom so far in this quest.

>>36378495

>>
>>36378470

are you aware of the law of conservation of matter?
using liquid inside your body doesn't cause it to poof out of existance.

>>36378495
yes, good point
>>
>>36378486

I wouldn't even really call this a shit storm for the quest. They are kind of just bickering about things extrinsic to the quest. In the future, would it be too much to ask people to relocate to a new thread to carry out their intensive debates (not that I necessarily mind having some cross reading mixed in between REQM's posts)?
>>
>>36378545
The question is, where it is stored in our body so it can be delivered this fast to the tubes. Obviously it comes into our body through eating, but it can't be just dragged from all the places your consumed water goes to at a moments notice, there needs to be a bladder or something.
Assuming it is liquids, of course.
>>
>>36378501
>different joint needed
Not really, we could simply use the pulling system we have naturally.
>different bones needed
Our arms are literally coated in some kind of chitin with extreme properties. I assume our bones are different than normal.

Further question:

DO WE HAVE ARM BONES?
>>
>>36378520
gr8 m8, i r8 8/8.
>>
>>36378619
The chitin used to only coat our hand, so the assumption would be we still have arm bones, becaus we had that at some point.

>>
>>36378617
>The question is, where it is stored in our body so it can be delivered this fast to the tubes
It is stored INSIDE the tubes. The tubes are always filled with liquid.
Like how the eye is full of liquid, the brain pan is full of liquid, the interstitial fluid fills up a lot of cavities, and your blood is always inside your veins.
It seems to me like you have not the slightest clue what hydraulics are and how they work.
>>
>>36378619
>Not really, we could simply use the pulling system we have naturally.
Hydraulic systems using tubes do not allow for that kind of dexterity, unless we talk about a damn lot of tubes, and even then, that would be really jittery as fuck.
>>
>>36378669
I think our arms have both chitin and arm bones.
>>
>>36378681
The fuck are you talking about? Bugs have great dexterity.
Unless you mean MECHANICAL hydraulic systems don't have that kind of dexterity.
Because, well, no fucking duh, it's a machine. Our mechanical muscle simulations don't have dexterity either.
>>
>>36378644
Spider hydraulic muscles do not work at all like that.
Like, not even a little.
>>
>>36378679
incidentally, that would mean that a stab in the arm could burst the tubes and make them lose the liquid, at which point healing magic will not restore immediate functionality to the arm unless it can replace the liquid, instead you have to way a few days for your body to produce replacement liquid in the tube.

Though, if someone had told you before to exercise so you could sleep better you'd have laughed in their face. Everything is sort of backwards now, isn't it.

It isn't long before you reach the tree proper, and with small winged humanoids beneath each arm, you haul yourself into the nest.

Your siblings have already returned from a days activities, waiting in a half circle with food for your return. Mom and Dad are up a minute later, your father protesting being carried all the way while your mother cackles.

There's no actual signal, but once everyone is sitting, or in the process of sitting, or just in the general area of the food pile, dinner starts. You tear through a pair of legs of something or another before you try and talk.

Some things just need doing.

"Mom?"
"Mmm?"
"How does the treaty work? Can I bring someone into the woods?"

She swallows, wiping a bit of blood off her lips with one hand.
"As long as you are with them, yes. Which is a good idea anyway. Being alone is a good way to eaten."
You nod.

"I will be heading to the waterfall tomorrow then, yes? And the village. There is an adventurer I am planning to kidnap."
Mom laughs, and Dad shakes his head.
"Please tell me you are joking."

You give him a blank look.
"Mom always told me that lying is terrible-"
"Lyra."
"I'm pretty sure that she has never said anything about lying-"
"Erics!"

And now Dad's laughing.
"There is a half elf named Lann, yes? We worked together a bit, and we shared some stories in the guild."
"Huh. She's rather far from home, isn't she?"
"Dear, you're living in the arachne forest, yes? I am fairly certain you are further."

"That depends if she's from the capital or the coast of course-"
"Erics, if you get out a map at dinner it will not end well."

You look away from the impending flirting, and over your shoulder.
Your friends are apparently using you as a table. And a chair. And a bed.

Jin has apparently managed to smear food all over her face prior to falling asleep, and Sheszka has neatly tucked herself between your legs and your body. Nin is the only member upright, nibbling at leaves of some sort.

She looks over at you, greens hanging from her mouth.
"Mnmn?"
"How was your day, yes?"
>>
>>36378737
It really depends here on whether healing magic restores blood.

If healing magic restores your vital juices, then all is good.

If it doesn't, then healing magic kind of sucks compared to most settings with healing magic.
>>
>>36378801
She stuffs the rest of the leaf into her mouth all at once, trying to force it down as she answers.

Of course she starts choking.

You thump her on the back a few times- Which equates to a light tap in your case, though it still sends the moth stumbling a bit.
"Better?"
"Of course! And any day spent in the Queen's service is- blrghmnmnglrnm-"

You interrupt her incoming tirade by simply grabbing the moth's head and mussing her hair, and she starts to laugh.
"Enough of that, yes?"
"Oh, I haven't even started yet."

You sigh, and pick yourself up- You step back a bit, and haul your wolf up with one hand, making your way to the blanket pile occupying the corner.

You pick a few choice ones out for yourself, return Sheszka to her previous spot, and start to settle in. You'll need to bathe tomorrow. You'll also need to bathe Jin tomorrow, but she at least likes the bath. The waterfall makes it easier on you.

You're forming up a pile of blankets beneath you when Nin walks around you, pausing at your from with a blanket over her shoulders like a cloak.
"Do you need help? You have a blanket, yes?"
"I am awaiting your promise, yes?"
"What?"

"Do not worry, I understand."
"What?"
The little moth pries one of your arms free from the blankets as you watch, pushing and pulling, rearranging you to her own liking before she settles herself against you.
"Nin- What are you-"
"You promised, my queen. And I aim to collect."

She snuggles into your shirt, and it's not long before her breath slows and evens out, though her grip never falters.

You give up. You're tired as it is, and you let your eyes slide closed, propping yourself onto the blankets. Tomorrows a new day.

Anon, I was talking to another anon speaking from his personal experience with hydraulics.

Now that you mention it, yes, machines with hydraulic and non hydraulic systems achieve amazing dexterity when designed for it. Bugs also achieve amazing dexterity with their hydraulic systems. Okay guys, this is dumb. It's a fantasy setting. Lyra's biology works in much the same was her ability to control the earth with her mind, fire lightning from her spear, and conjure fire from the fucking ether.

It works because REASONS. There is probably a mechanism behind it, but it doesn't use physics or biology that we are aware of, and probably involves things which couldn't happen in our reality. IT'S MAGIC.

MAAAAAAGIC.
>>
>>36379180
I hate to be a bother, but there would most likely always be fluids in the tubes, as organic creatures are generally not tuned to have 100% de-activation states when not in use, and we'll most likely always be using the musculature in one way or another.

Bleeding out movement fluid probably wouldn't be a matter though, as by the time we're at that point, we'd be dying anyway.
>>
>>36379235

>>
>>36379180
>I can agree with that, the other anon claimed there isn't any pump because "the liquid is always in the tubes" and I pointed out why that doesn't work.
1. the liquid IS always in the tube, because its an organic system that NEVER SHUTS DOWN you moron.
2. I did not claim that there is no pumps. I claimed there is no RESERVOIR. Because organic system.
3. Seriously the heart does not work that way. there is always blood in the heart, there is always blood in the veins, they are always 100% full of blood. the heart just moves it around so its different blood in different places, while still being 100% full of blood at all time
Like how you can take a glass full of water and spin the water around with a spoon, the glass is full, the water is moving.
>>
>>36379247
>but there would most likely always be fluids in the tubes
There would always be fluid in the tubes, obviously, can't spend time pumping it in before usage.
The point was, there needs to be something in the body that puts the liquid there in case it isn't anymore.
Otherwise that would be a shitty setup.
Some anon claimed the liquid required for it would always be there and there is no need for something to replenish it, which doesn't work.
>>
>>36379288
>I claimed there is no RESERVOIR

>>
>>36379434
I would like to note that I discussed this under the premise of fantasy biology in which we had something work, and then tried to figure out its system as far as possible, untl we reach the "MAGIC" point.

I'm fairly sure even the other anons realise none of that stuff actually works in reality, because you obviously can't just transplant parts of one organ system into another one.
>>
>>36379306
>There would always be fluid in the tubes, obviously, can't spend time pumping it in before usage.
Which you explicitly argued against
>The point was, there needs to be something in the body that puts the liquid there in case it isn't anymore.
1. bullshit, that wasn't the point. you asked "where will the liquid come from". That would be "where is the reservoir"
2. Jesus fuck people already told you, many of them, that the heart does not produce blood. Pump =! where the liquid comes from
3. Multiple people have all said, 4 of them at last count, that if we are bleeding out our hydraulic fluid we are also dying from bloodloss.
There does not need to be some sort of bladder and pump to replenish the fluid in case someone chops off your arm. All animals do just fine without such a system for their blood. and by just fine I mean die from fatal injuries. Any such system would give you a few extra seconds at most. And it won't even work with haudralics since unless the tubes are completely repaired and can handle the pressure, then the fluid will just burst the scab and reopen the injury. so in fact NOT rapidly replenishing the fluid is advantageous as it makes it possible to heal.
Also, again THE HEART DOES NOT PRODUCE OR STORE SPARE BLOOD. It contains blood that is currently in use, and it has nothing to do with producing new blood.
Likewise, the pumps in the thorax do not need to store or replenish the fluid.

>>36379103
>your heart doesn't replenish blood, that's bone marrow
actually to be perfectly technical, that is only blood cells.
most of the fluid comes from your liver after being absorbed from your diet. and a lot of organs are involved in regulating the exact composition of your blood

>Stop trying to backpedal so hard.

This is hilarious

>>You: where does even all that liquid come from
>>36378545
>>Me: we drink water?

>>You: The question is, where it is stored in our body so it can be delivered this fast to the tubes. Obviously it comes into our body through eating, but it can't be just dragged from all the places your consumed water goes to at a moments notice, there needs to be a bladder or something.
A bladder = a reservoir
>>36378679
>>Me: It is stored INSIDE the tubes. The tubes are always filled with liquid.
>>Me: Like how the eye is full of liquid, the brain pan is full of liquid, the interstitial fluid fills up a lot of cavities, and your blood is always inside your veins.

Someone here is backpedaling hard, but it isn't me.

>That would be "where is the reservoir"
