RULES AND STATS: http://pastebin.com/SeV4Mmqv

You are KARLA WEISS, a Belkan fighter pilot looking to carve your own place in the skies!

The briefing room was oddly empty. Actually, it was EXTREMELY empty. Basically, you were pretty much the only pilot present. Well, you were until Wolf finally arrived. Samantha is already there, a bit of a frustrated and flustered look on her face.

"Look, before either of you say anything, yes, I know this is short notice, and yes I know this is during a leave period, but it's an emergency situation." Samantha sighs.

"Just tell us what's going on." You grunt.

"Yeah. I was just about to party my way through Oured." Wolf sighs. "Better be worth our time."

Without missing a beat, Samantha hits the projector and points to a map of Osea.

"Thirty minutes ago, the Osean Air Force detected an unknown contact breaching their airspace. We're not exactly sure what it is, but intelligence suggests that it was some sort of high speed reconnaissance plane."

An unknown bird flying over Osean airspace? Whoever was willing to do that had some serious balls.

"Why can't the Oseans get off their lazy asses and intercept the plane themselves?" Wolf yawns.

"At the speed this plane is going, it blazed past most of their air defenses before they realized it was there, and their air patrols aren't fast enough to catch up to it." Samantha explains.

"And what makes you think we can?" You ask.

"Radar data shows that the bogey is flying east. Both our and Osean analysts believe the plane is heading to the relative safety of international waters to refuel, and in order to do that, it needs to slow down. Since we're the closest military assets to the projected refueling point, and because intercepting planes over international waters is a touchy issue, the Osean government wants us to handle the intercept."

"Great. Except, none of our flights are here." Wolf points out.

"I know. Which is why you'll be working with Valkyrie here." Samantha continues.

"Okay, sure." You nod. Considering the circumstances, with most of Artemis' pilots not present, there really wasn't more that could be done. "I hope we at least get a bonus for a rush job."

"Don't worry, I made sure wring all I could out of them." Samantha grins. "All you need to do is intercept that plane and neutralize any hostile forces in the area."

"What's our ROE on the bogey itself?" You ask.

"The Oseans preferably want it captured intact, no doubt to figure out what intel it's carrying, and are willing to pay an additional bounty if we do. However, you are still clear to destroy the bogey if you feel it might escape. It's imperative that whatever data it's gathered doesn't get delivered."

"What's the threat level? Will we have any support? Not that we need it." Wolf adds.

"Enemy composition is completely unknown, so you'll just have to be careful and be prepared for anything." Samantha sighs. "And as I've said before, the Oseans don't want to get directly involved in this. However, the Osean Navy does have a carrier group in the vicinity that you can utilize in case you need an emergency landing or something like that."

"Oh, so we're effectively on our own. Just checking." Wolf nods with a grin.

"Right, this is a time sensitive mission, so I suggest you get in your planes right now." Samantha turns off the projector. "Unless any of you have any other questions."

"Nope, I'm good." Wolf says.

"Absolutely thrilled." You say flatly and shrug. "I'm pretty sure we handle anything we find up there."

"Heh, that must be that typical Belkan stoicism I keep hearing about!" Wolf chuckles. "No wonder everybody thinks you're all party poopers!"

"Isn't your hangar down that way?" You point out. You honestly didn't really have time to deal with this.

"Oh, I guess it is!" Wolf grins and points both his fingers at your pistol style. "See ya in the air, then!"

Man. Emmerians. You roll your eyes and continue on to your hangar, where you see Smokey and his boys putting the last panel back onto your Falcon.

"Is she good to go, Smokey?" You ask.

"Yep! Went through every inch of her!" Smokey nods as he hands you your flight helmet.

"Find anything wrong?" You ask as you settle into your cockpit and put on your helmet.

"Yep. Looks like there was a programming fault in the fly by wire system, which is probably what put you in that stall. We rebooted the whole system so the problem should be fixed."

"Should?" You stare flatly at Smokey.

"Won't find out till you're in the air, eh?" Smokey shrugs. "Though if I were you, I'd avoid flying too low to the ground. Just in case."

"Boy, you sure are a confidence booster." You grunt as you close the canopy and go through your preflight check. Once you were satisfied everything was working properly, you pull out the airstrip, where you see Wolf's F-22 has already started lifting off from the ground.

"Better hurry up, Valkyrie, or I might just leave you behind!" Wolf laughs.

"Alpha One, please refrain from radio chatter during takeoff procedures." You hear the tower controller say sternly. "Bravo Four, runway is clear. You may take off when ready."

You throttle up and take off, your Falcon's single engine easily pushing your lightweight fighter into the sky. Once you were safely in the air, you realized that you had no visual of Wolf's plane, though you could still see his IFF beacon clearly on your radar screen and HUD.

>Control test successful! One ten may be ignored in this battle!

You go through the motions, testing out all the controls. Flaps, rudder, ailerons, etc. Satisfied that your Falcon wasn't dropping out of the sky like a rock, you throttle up to catch up to the now distant Wolf, and you're forced to use afterburner to catch up. Damn Raptors and their supercruise.

"You sure took your time." Wolf chides.

"Doesn't hurt to be cautious." You reply.

At this point, you've crossed the coastline, and now all you can see below you is endless ocean. The sun was also beginning to go down, darkening the skies. That meant you'd have to rely more on your instruments if it came down to a dogfight.

"Loki, do you have a bead on the bogey, yet?" You ask.

"We've got it on radar. Just keep on your current track, and you'll intercept in under two minutes."

You check your own radar to corroborate, but frown when you don't see anything just yet. Figures, considering an AWACS would have much more powerful sensors than your Falcon.

"Ah, looks like this is gonna be a milk run." Wolf sighs, sounding a bit disappointed.

"You sound almost like Lara."

You stay quiet and concentrate on the mission, keeping a close eye on your radar and making sure you were keeping a safe distance from Wolf. It would have been extremely tragic if the both of you were taken out via midair collision, which was always a danger, especially now that it was getting very dark as the sun slipped under the horizon.

Finally, your own radar picks up a mystery contact, no doubt the bogey you were tasked to intercept. If you had to get this close to spot it, then it most likely had some sort of stealth feature or something.

"Alpha, Bravo, be advised, I'm picking additional unknown contacts." Loki warns. "One large contact and four smaller ones coming from the east. They are due to intercept the bogey in thirty seconds."

"His backup, I assume." You grunt.

"Most likely. The Osean Navy just confirmed they have no units the area. Assume unknowns are hostile." Loki says.

"Well now, things are getting interesting." Wolf grins. "How about I take the fighters and you take care of the tanker? My stealth will make it easier for me to get the jump on them."

"The bogey is the priority." You say. "I'll draw away the escorts while you hit the tanker. Without it, the bogey isn't going anywhere."

"Huh, that's pretty ballsy of you. You sure you can handle it?" Wolf asks.

"Hey, the Falcon may not be as fancy as the Raptor, but it's still pretty good in a knife fight." You reassure him. "Plus I don't need to take down the escorts, just keep their attention on me for a few seconds."

"Okay, if you say so." Wolf says. "I'll get into ambush position. I'll hit the tanker once you make your move."

"Roger that." You say. You quickly review the situation. You don't have a visual on the enemy escorts, so you're not too sure what type of planes they are. Whether they were antiques like MiG-21s or higher end craft like Flankers made a difference in how you would approach. Perhaps hit them from standoff range? Or try to get in close and bounce them? Engaging at standoff risked your missiles missing, while trying to bounce meant they might detect you on radar first if you weren't careful.

We lack the stealth capabilities of the Raptor, so if we close in, we'll probably be in for a world of hurt. BVR combat's still pretty risky, but since we're stuck being interceptor, it's probably our best shot.

However, you see two of the blips suddenly break off. You silently curse, as it must have spotted you. Fortunately, the other two planes are a bit slower and don't immediately go evasive, giving you an opening.

Hate to go off topic while we're waiting, but:

Why isn’t Morgan spending time with her family for Thanksgiving, again? She said she went to America to escape her family’s stigma of being a markswoman.

Without wasting any time, you quickly angle your Falcon nose down and dive on the remaining two fighters. Your gunsights flash as your radar pings the enemy in front of you, and you pull the trigger, letting loose a stream of bright red tracers at your target. You see the plane spark and flash as bullets tear through its hull, and the craft bursts into flame as ammo and fuel are ignited. The pilot attempts to bank away from your furious assault, but his dying craft won't listen to his commands, and it actually swerves right into his wingman, creating a massive, golden fireball as you dive past.

Well, you technically didn't kill that second plane yourself... but eh, you'll take it.

You were also close enough to get a good look at what the planes were. Flankers. You had to assume that the other two planes were the same type. You glance at your radar again, and are glad to see Wolf kept up his end of the deal as the large contact winks out on your radar, punctuated by the brief birth and death of a miniature sun as the tanker and all the fuel it's carrying literally goes up in smoke.

"Scratch one tanker!" Wolf whoops victoriously.

That just left the two other flankers. Unfortunately, it looked like Wolf was still out of position, which meant you had to deal with the last two. You check your radar, and can see that the Flankers had now turned around and are headed straight for you on a perpendicular course to your right.

The two Flankers catch what you're doing and attempt a hard turn to counter yours, but they underestimate the maneuverability of your Falcon, most likely because they can't really get a good visual on you and are assuming you're flying a heavy fighter like they are. That's an assumption they'll pay dearly for, as you manage to edge in behind one of the Flankers and your target system whines with a positive lock. You can't get enough lead on the Flanker for guns, so you opt for missiles this time.

You fire off a pair of missiles, their rocket flares marking their journey in the darkness. You see another bright flash as the Flanker you've targeted unleashes a stream of flares in attempt to shake the missiles. However, it's futile. One missile loses track and explodes against one of the flares, but the second one stubbornly holds its lock and hits home. You can make out the Flanker's right wing being snapped off, and there's a brief flash as you see a ejection seat activate.

"Loki, better call in search and rescue. We have at least one pilot ejected." You announce.

"Roger that, Bravo Four. I'm already contacting the Osean Navy for assistance."

With that done, you look around to find the last Flanker, when you see another bright flare in the darkness.

"Can't let you have all the fun, now can I?" Wolf says playfully. "Not bad, though."

"Thanks." You sigh and then blink. You nearly forgot why you were really here. "Let's catch that bogey."

"Lets."

Both you and Wolf chase down the last unknown contact on your radar while Loki keeps a lookout for any other potential threats. Sure enough, you can see a dark, sleek shape right in front of you, and your HUD tags it.

"Unidentified plane, this is Alpha One of Artemis Defense, acting on behalf of the Osean Government. Do you read me?" Wolf announces.

Silence.

"Unknown aircraft, you will turn on your running lights, drop speed and set course west towards Osea. Failure to do so will mean we will shoot you down. Do you copy?" Wolf continues.

Silence.

"Not the talkative sort." Wolf sighs. "Maybe we should just save ourselves the trouble and shoot him down."

"All right, watch how the ladies handle this." You say, pulling your Falcon ahead. You climb a bit so you're above and to the left of the plane, which from its silhouette you suspect is a Blackbird, and let off a short burst of cannon fire across its flightpath. There was no way it could miss it.

"Hey, whoever is flying that Blackbird," You call out on an open channel. "Just... give it up already. Your backup is toast, and you've got to be running on fumes. You can either come with us, get shot down, or ditch in the ocean. You probably won't get getting out of two of those three choices alive."

Silence.

"Look, none of us here want you dead, okay? And do you really want this? To die alone in the middle of the ocean, and for what? A few pictures?"

You pause and take a breath.

"Look, you got any family? Kids? Parents? Loved ones?"

And finally, the mystery pilot speaks.

"I have two kids." He mumbles.

Finally, something you can leverage.

"And what will happen to you kids if you die out here? Most likely, Osea's going to hush this up, and I doubt whoever employed you is going to talk, either, so as far as your kids know, you're just going to fall off the face of the earth. That's going to be the worst feeling, the uncertainty. And trust me, I should know." You say, trying to keep your voice from cracking. "Just... please. Don't do something stupid."

"...just give me a course, then." The pilot sighs and you see the Blackbird's running lights wink on.

"So, uh, what now?" Wolf asks.

"I actually didn't think I'd get this far." You laugh nervously. "I guess take him to the nearest Osean base?"

"Or you know, we could always take him back to ours. I don't think Osea ever specified WHERE to take the plane as long as it was on their soil..."

"Are you implying..."

"Hey, I'm sure a Blackbird would be a very valuable asset."

"That's a tempting prospect." You grin. "All right, Loki, plot us a course back to base. We'll be handling this guy ourselves."

"All right, plotting a new course." Loki says. "I hope you know what you're doing."

"Hey, if the Oseans wanted this plane so bad they shouldn't have hired mercs to do it." You point out. "Considering they have a carrier group out here, they could've done it themselves."

"And you know, they didn't consider all the pain and emotional distress we suffered, having to fight those escorts." Wolf adds in.

"Yeah, pain and emotional distress." You reiterate, trying not to giggle.

"Right, right. I'll call in a tanker to make sure he can make it to shore." Loki concedes. "Actually, hold on, I'm picking up new contacts."

"What?" You blink. "How many? Where?"

"Two, coming in from the same track the previous escorts came from." Loki says. "Must be coming to see what's wrong."

Damnit. You could always pick up speed to get out of their detection range, but that risked using up what little fuel the Blackbird had left. Both you and Wolf certainly couldn't engage them together, since at least one of you had to keep an eye on the Blackbird.

Without missing a beat, you pull a split S and hit full afterburner. Thankfully in this case, the UGMs were fired at max range, and they couldn't go very far, so you decided to pull the same move your opponents did. You keep a close eye on your radar and see both missile contacts closing in on you. However, they eventually flicker and wink out, having run out of fuel and unable to continue the chase.

"Missiles evaded. Good job, Bravo Four." Loki says, his relief clear in his voice.

"Yeah, thanks, Loki." You breath a sigh of relief as well. "What about the enemies? Did I nail either of them?"

"That's a negative. They did the same thing you did and outpaced your missiles."

"Ah, can't be helped." You grumble. "Are we clear?"

"Nothing on my scopes, and Alpha One and the bogey are already in Osean airspace."

"Ah, we can go home, then."
