Interlude: Small Mau, Big City

You wait and watch with your younger sister on a nearby rooftop as a fish merchant unboxes a late arriving box of the day’s catch in front of his market stall. She has been getting braver with her leaping descents, so you figured you would take her out through town to teach her many of the useful things you think she should know. With mom so busy, such responsibilities fall to you.

“Okay, lil’D, just follow my lead and remember to do like I showed you,” you say to the fuzzy kitten beside you.

“‘Kay, big sister,” she mews and you nod.

With a few quick hops you are on the ground and crossing the pedestrian walkway to the stall front. With a meow you grab the merchant’s attention. The middle aged man looks down, confused and then smiles in recognition.

“Oh, hey there. I haven’t seen you in a while,” he says familiarly and leans down to gently stroke your fur.

You purr in response.

“Hang on a second,” he says and leans over his counter before placing a tiny smelt in front of you.

With a happy meow you pick the fish up in your mouth and turn to look up at where your sister should be observing and now following.

She isn’t there.

Nor is she beside you on either side.

...that’s not a good thing.

Quest Start

A heavy sport fencing foil sheath grinds exposed metal, plastic, and glass from a modified bluetooth controlled digital camera hidden in the toe of a cheap sneaker positioned between your feet. That camera had a fell purpose, to catch a photograph of your underwear when you rose from your seat on the now moderately crowded train. Anger boils through you and distracts you from your earlier woe and worry.

The owner of the camera is a young man, though older than you and likely not in high school, in a high collared jacket, large sunglasses, and ballcap. Together these accessories hide enough of him to make describing him in any meaningful way to a Transit Officer all the more difficult. Frankly, you don’t want to escalate the situation to that. Well, you want to escalate it, just not in the direction that involves police.

The owner of the sheathed fencing foil is a young woman, about your age, with deep and bright pink hair done up in a high ponytail. She wears a green plaid skirt and a red long sleeved waist jacket over a white shirt, the girls uniform at the prestigious Infinity Academy, and sports a perennial happy smile. Her name is Momoko Nakajima, a former classmate of your’s from junior high school.

You are Mikage Chiba, second year high school student age 15 and the mysterious hero known as Eclipse. You support the fourth Sailor Moon who is also your baby sister and her contemporary Sailor Senshi while incognito from the shadows with bolstering speeches, thrown daggers and roses, and an extensive amount of legwork to gather the necessary intel to perform those first two. A year and a half ago you were Sailor Moon, but circumstances of grief and believed moral failing brought you to abandon the identity previously worn by your older sister and mother.
>>
>>36314771

On either side of you are Kairi Osaka and Midori Mori. Kairi is your best friend, whom you have known since early childhood, though estranged during a period of mutual grief you have reconnected and she has become one of your magical retainers the Nephrite Knight. Midori is similarly empowered by you to as the Jadeite Knight; until recently she was an antagonistic classmate of yours who didn’t realize you were the bubbly and catty member of a Ganguro fashion circle she participates in, whom she thought of as a close friend.

Nakajima-san has leveled at the ungentlemanly fellow an extremely soft veiled threat of publicly exposing his action to the rail passengers who have not yet already taken notice of the situation. Kairi and Midori have taken notice in the wake of the sound of breaking glass, and as they realize what they are seeing are growing justly agitated and irate. You have such loyal knights.

Just seconds earlier you had noticed this man setting up to take his intended upskirt photo, but before you could do anything about it, Momoko Nakajima slammed a piece of her athletic equipment down into the shoe mounted aperture of his camera.

This fellow seems to be unphased by her threat, and might be about to react angrily.

With anger balling into one of your hands, you shoot up from your seat and scream out as you unleash your exceptionally righteous fury.

“PERVERT,” you shriek in accusation as your knuckles crack against his jaw.

>6 Vitality Damage done to target.
>4 Wounds accumulated by target

The sheath pinning his oversized shoe to the floor holds him while his chin jerks up and a few teeth fly out of his mouth along with thin trails of blood. His head bobs back down as his sunglasses fall askew on his face.

“Upskirts!” you growl as he seems to steady himself, “TAKING UPSKIRTS OF HIGHSCHOOL GIRLS ON THE TRAIN!,”

He tries to jerk away from you, but is pinned in place by Nakajima-san’s secured weapon. After his initial pull, he begins to trip and fall. Still smiling, Nakajima turns to you with her smile not faltering. Surprise spreads across her face, as though she hadn’t seen you before. Likewise when she realizes Kairi and Midori are with you.

People around the train have turned to look at this scene. They see the man on the ground and the broken electronics hanging out of his shoe and a few people look aghast. Too many appear indifferent and trying very hard not to notice.

“Chiba-san?” she beams as she hefts her sheathed sport weapon across her shouler, “Oh my goodness, I haven’t seen you since graduation. How have you been? Osaka-san, Mori-san, hello to you too. I didn’t see you before,”

The prone man clutches his face and begins struggling to his feet.

Ignoring Nakajima’s friendly words, you’re still seeing red. Taking a step forward you aggressively strike with your shoed foot down beneath the cover of his longer coat and hear a satisfied yelp as you slam into your intended target, lifting him slightly. On the incoming strike you feel pressure against the line of his inner thigh, perhaps tearing skin through the weak fabric of his cheap slacks.

> 6 vitality damage dealt. Total dealt: 12
> 4 wounds accumulated. Total wounds: 8
> 1 leftover success, not enough to deal another wound, sunk into Vitality. Totalt dealt: 13.

“And you have the gall to call yourself a man?” you spit as he collapses forward onto the floor with nary another word but coughing further blood.

A few folks on the train continue to ignore what just happened. A few men and women offer silent thanks and nods of approval to you and looks of disapproval to the man.

Instead of fleeing, this time he has the good sense to stay down and curl into a ball.

Nakajima gives a whistle and a low and nervous laugh. Kairi and Midori stare at you in wide eyed shock. They seem to have frozen in shock at you sudden direct, and effective, violence while in mid rise to come to your defense.

“So...hi,” Momoko Nakajima chirps as you continue to stare down the cowed fiend who tried to take illicit photos of you, “What are you girls doing around here?”
>>
>>36319060

And maybe its the parts of yourself you reclaimed when Miki came home, but you feel positively insulted that he was going for something so...boring. Upskirt photos without context? Even for a perv that does this stuff without permission it must be like playing the lottery. A sadistic ass who was stupid and uncreative. Let him have whatever fate will give him lying in a pool of his own shame here on this train.

“Actually we were on our way to meet a friend,” Kairi explains stepping out of comfort zone and being social...perhaps she’s still in shock at your outburst, “They said they were having an entrance interview at Infinity Academy and we were going to meet them at the gate,”

“An entrance interview?” Nakajima wonders aloud, trying to ignore the squirming mess you turn away from with a huff, “This late in the term?”

“As I understand it, he’s an international transfer,” Midori smiles and looks about nervously as at least one of the commuters is on their phone keeping a close watch on the situation.

“Oh, well if your friend is getting an entrance interview than he’ll likely be enrolled,” she smiles before turning to you, “Oh, Chiba-san, I think I saw your older sister this morning,”

Taking a steadying breath, you turn to face Nakajima-san and put your best face forward, putting the ugliness hopefully behind you.

~Good afternoon, Nakajima-san, its been too long,~ you say with a smile.

“Ah, it really has. I haven’t seen any of you since graduation,” she begins and then worriedly catches herself and looks a bit embarrassed, “-I mean! Oh, I’m sorry if its a sore subject. I mean it must have been so hard for all three of you,”

Midori looks away from her, a nervous and embarrassed worry on her face. Kairi looks like...well...Kairi, that creeping self doubt you know she has welling back up to play tricks on her. As much as you enjoy the calm sweet flavor of her issues regarding that day, it probably isn’t good for her in the long term to just keep snacking on her feelings.

“Actually, Nakajima-san,” Kairi begins weakly but looks up with resolve, “I wanted to thank you for distracting me from Mikage-chan that day. If you hadn’t gotten my attention, I might have done something I couldn’t have lived with,”

“Oh, come on, Osaka-san. The only person you should be thank is the third Sailor Moon,” she beams in response, “She showed up so quickly after you dropped Chiba-san,” she turns back to you, “I just took a stupid risk and probably almost got you hurt worse. Sailor Moon would have probably done something cool like catch you in a backflip!”

“I didn’t drop her,” Kairi waves off, “That thing wasn’t me...I’d rather not reminisce about it,”

“Neither would I,” Midori groans while glancing over to you as the train lurches to a stop, “I’m perfectly happy pretending that day never happened,”
>>
>>36320082

“Oh my gosh,” the pink haired swords woman balks, “I didn’t mean to...I mean,” she takes a shallow breath and smiles with an a slight edge of embarrassment, “So, I uh...yeah. Chiba-san, I was saying before how I saw your sister this morning. I was at the hospital visiting a friend,”

Several passengers disembark when the doors open, a few just slide further away from your group and the downed fellow without disembarking. A delay light shines on the announcement dot matrix above the door, instructing to please wait for officer response.

~Yeah, she’s back in the country for some family stuff that’s going on,~ you shrug, ~though out of curiosity what was she up to?~

“Well she was speaking to Director Tomoe and... another patient, I think,” she seems to strain thinking about the third person and doesn’t notice your twitch at your sensei of, previously unknown, mass destruction.

~Huh,~ you muse.

“What are you doing out of class now, anyway?” Midori inquires with a concerned edge, “Our school got closed because of a monster attack. What’s your excuse?”

“Oh, just some point trials for placement in a fencing tourney,” she boasts with an edge of pride, “My club did really good, its got me super excited for the regionals. I’m actually on the way back to school right now. Even though I have a full days pass I figured I might as well try and catch the end of the day and see the rest of my friends,”

Your downed target, now ignored by your chatter, tries to right himself and slowly make his way to the far wall of the car. Collecting his teeth along the way, he carefully sits himself down and tries to compose himself while poignantly looking away from your group.

~Well, since we’re already going to the same place, mind if we walk with you?”~ you ask Nakajima plainly.

“Oh, I’d really like that,” she smiles, “Maybe I can show you and my prospective new peer the grounds while everything is still open for club activities,”

~Oh, I wouldn’t want to be a bother,~ you would rather this not turn into a huge gathering of people.

Though it wouldn’t be the worst thing that could happen. You know, having a life.

The car doors reopen and a man in a blue jacketed uniform, white gloves, and a proper blue hat enters the car.

“Excuse me,” he says loudly and politely as he surveys the car and takes notice of the obviously bloodied man and the broken electronics hanging out his shoe, “I received a report about a disturbance?”

You point an upset and accusatory finger at the bloodied man. The officer approaches him and the two have a few words. Ultimately he asks the injured man to collect the loose and broken pieces of tech that seem to go with the broken interior of his overly large shoe and follow him off the train to see about getting him patched up at the local police substation and asking a few questions regarding his presently damaged device.

He gives you an angry look, but you return it impassively and coldly. He complies with the officer and in a fe moments the train in on the move again.

“I really can’t stand people who do stuff like that,” Nakajima clicks her tongue before returning to her shining eyed vigor and enthusiasm, “Its just not nice. Anyway it really wouldn’t be a bother to show you around,”

We do have quite a lot on our list of things to do, I think. And sticking around Mugen Gakuen is a good way to get stuck talking to Hotaru... and come to think of it, we know entirely too much about her relationship with Usa and we're pretty sure Usa was riding the pony in her room when we left... yeah. Best to avoid that.

This worries me on several levels.

Watching the shorter man and the officer continue down the platform as you pull out of the station, you mull over Momoko Nakajima’s offer. You are already extremely familiar with the layout of the Infinity Academy, but that isn’t the excuse you give.

~Even if you say we aren’t a bother, we are pressed for time. We were planning on taking your new schoolmate off campus somewhere to celebrate,~ you explain with a slight pout.

“Oh...well, celebrations are cool and all,” she finds her feet particularly interesting, “Anyway, I guess I was a little insistent,”

“A little, you haven’t even met him yet,” Kairi rolls her eyes, feeling a bit better about the conversation.

“Oh?” Nakajima quirks an eyebrow as Midori seems mildly aghast at Kairi’s reveal, “You’re meeting a guy?” she turns to you with a sly grin, “Is this another famous Mikage Chiba crush?”

~No,~ you bite back and explain as you come to the next local stop, ~I haven’t really had any crushes since middle school,~

“Oh no,” she laments in response, “Does this mean the rumors about you are true?”

~What rumors?~

“The Princess of No,” she says conspiratorially, “That you became some kind of ogre that shuns, well, everything,”

You take a calming breath. The train rolls to life again, the next stop is the one you’ve all been waiting for.

“That’s a bit of a sore subject,” Midori waves.

>So, how about that tourney.
>Its not unfounded, but I’m trying to get away from it.
>Don’t protest, but express annoyance at the nickname and the crush accusations.
>Protest as much as you can to the very notion of having a crush.

Yeah, deflect.
>>
I kind of don't want to deflect, but I see Momoko as the jerk friend who is way more successful than you are after a similar amount of time and starting in a similar place.

That jerk friend who doesn't realize that everything they say reminds you of your problems.
>>
>>36321360
I see her as the old friend we haven't seen in a while, who unknown to us is secretly a ninja.

~So, how about that tourney,~ you ask nonchalantly and in a perfectly reasonable tone.

“I keep stepping into these uncomfortable subjects,” she laments as she seems to realize her misstep, “I’m sorry, I don’t usually do this,”

You continue to look at her expectantly.

“Its okay,” Kairi smiles, “Its not like we can ignore everything from the last year, right?”

You and Midori give a sharp nod before you turn your gaze back to Nakajima, letting your feigned curiosity to her tournament placing guide you.

Momoko Nakajima begins nervously, but picks up in speed and excited timbre as she describes her fights and assessments during the course of this mornings placement proceedings. Frankly everything she says about brackets and the like goes over your head. You were never much one for organization and structure in your violence, be it for entertainment or for sport.

Around her explanation of the unusual technical point she scored in her second assessment match, the train comes to the stop across the street from the Infinity Academy. With a slow gait, the four of you circle the property fence and observe the well kept gardens of the campus beyond. After this long walk and the extremely overly energetic explanation of her placement in the actual tourney, which you still aren’t sure you’ve understood, you pass through the fence’s archway and cross the beautifully maintained grounds of the Infinity Academy.

Its pleasant, not like Mom or Gai’s places of invested power, but supernaturally pleasant all the same, not at all like you remembered it when you were younger. Shortly, after passing assorted students enjoying after class recreation and possible club activities on the grounds, your assemblage of four eventually comes across the doorway into the central academic and administrative building.

A lump forms in your throat, along with a sensation of imminent foreboarding.

I like them, I don't think you have a character that I don't like. Even the villains.

Momoko is more bubbly here, but I like that. I want that in Momoko.

>>36321826
Been enjoying the characters.
>>
>>36321903
Probably because she has a reason to be so excited, seeing people she hasn't seen since a very traumatic event.
>>
>>36324254
The apologeticness of her repeatedly bumping into the elephant in their shared history amuses me.
>>
>>36324403
It is quiet endearing and indicative of her to keep tripping on this
>>
>>36321826
Mikage has a lot of interesting people to interact with. I'm particularly loving crossover Momoko.
>>
>>36327004
Wait, does Mikage know about Boris? In terms of being able to ask without raising suspicions regarding Dan.
>>
>>36327248
I seem to recall that Sasha mentioned him.

But I can't recall if he ever used the bear's name, or whether MIkage was pretending to be someone else at the time.
>>
>>36327287
So when we see him, one of our first orders of business is to ask about seeing his bear. And getting away from Mugen before we risk seeing Horaru...wait, shouldn5 she be on the way for the meeting?
>>
So, looks like we have a tie on the interlude vote.

I wonder if Boris is showing symptoms like Azusa did.

Heck maybe we can use the golden crystal to give him a human form. He's already got a dream mirror.
>>
There's a code I can't read and a word I can't remember...something like a captcha but harder to solve.

I can't see enough of it to understand, but the words are at the edge of my lips.

I don't belong here...but something is coming. Something is wrong.

It's all coming to an end.

Maybe if you can find the words, it will be a new beginning instead.
>>
Now I just need to remember what the now voted upon Interlude was supposed to be about...I was so wiped out last night...I may have wrote it on the back of a receipt.
>>
>>36339624
Hmmm. I'm pretty sure you said you'd do all three. Yep, that sounds right.

...And also give us a pony.
>>
>>36339624
To be honest, I didn't feel really strong about guessing what any of them were when I voted.

>Literally who? - this is maybe a Keiko thing? Sailor Sol and all that?

Behold the Wizard made me laugh when I saw it, so that's what I picked.

I don't have the slightest guess what Cognitive dissonance is going to be.

>>36340417
No no

We tried having a horse once, it didn't work, let's not do it again.

Only because it wasn't actually our horse. We just dreamed at the same wavelength as the girl who fed him sugar cubes.

>>36341731

>>36341731
We're into teddy bears now though.
