/tg/ - Traditional Games

September 4th, 2053.

It's been nearly four years since the Abyssal invasion of the Pacific. It began with raids on international shipping lanes, when tankers and cargo vessels all around the region came under sudden and unexplained attack. The few reliable reports from those opening weeks described a mysterious fleet of black ships flying no flags, ignoring all radio contact, and accepting no attempts at surrender. The UN Security council was pleased by the initial success of its response: forces from the Russian Federation, Chinese PLAN, Japanese MSDF, and US Navy won a string of skirmishes at Malacca, Hawaii, the Aleutians, Leyte, and Vancouver. A human victory seemed inevitable.

Then the capital ships appeared, a little more than a year into the war. The first of many setbacks.

Those ships, and the aircraft many of them carried, had a capability their smaller cousins lacked: the ability to render electronic guidance systems inert within a certain radius. Pilots reported their missiles simply “falling from the sky”, and Captains threw whole volleys of missiles into the sea around the Abyssal battleships hoping to score just a single lucky hit. Losses among the world's surface fleets were appalling, reducing first-rate navies to coastal patrol and convoy escort duties. Humanity needed a new weapon.

They needed you.

“Kanmusu”: developed in Japan by combining nascent technologies with ancient mysticism, only grudgingly shared with her Western allies. Cybernetic enhancements were crafted from the remains of old and storied warships and implanted into bodies cloned from the cells of Olympic athletes, fusing a living soul of steel and diesel with a body that far surpasses peak human ability. Your physique and fighting spirit, when interfaced with an array of specially designed equipment, give you the “punch” of a full-sized warship at a miniscule scale.

You are:

>The Japanese battleship Nagato, heavily armored and an expert in long-range naval riflery. Cool and elegant, in your past life you were one of the legendary “Big Seven” battleships. You were the only Japanese battleship to survive the war, and like many other veterans your career ended as a target at Operation Crossroads once nobody had a need for your skills.

>The Japanese fast battleship Kongou, jack of all trades but master of none. Built in Britain, you were designed to be fast, lively, and as “indestructible” as your namesake. You were the oldest of four sisters and the third of them lost in the war, sunk on your way to Kure by a submarine. It at least spared you the disgrace of seeing the IJN's ultimate fate at the Kure Arsenal.

>The American carrier Saratoga, lending the strength of your air wings to your squadmates. During the war they called you “Sister Sara”, and you took everything your enemies could throw at you from day one until Victory Day. With newer carriers in the fleet you were deemed 'surplus' and slated for Operation Crossroads alongside Nagato, Prinz Eugen, and many others.

>The German heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen; relatively light, evasive, and an absolute artist with torpedoes. Your main weakness is against aircraft, especially after you lost Bismark to a torpedo plane. Though you fought for the wrong side in the war you did so with honor, and you were glad to have met Nagato and Saratoga before sinking after Operation Crossroads like so many others.

Combat and vital stats will be explained after character selection, at which point you will be asked to confirm your choice.

Pissing against the tide.
>>
>Battleship

Sitting duck.

>Fast Battleship

Battlecruiser would be better. Not as fast as a battlecruiser so she can't run nor can she tank as many hits. A stupid ship design.

>Aircraft Carrier

This is hands down the best choice. Long range support. Requires escort or she's toast.

>Heavy Cruiser

Stop-gap between a Cruiser and a true Battlecruiser.

>Kongou
Most likely the best option going by gameplay. I like Nagato but the devs hate slow battleships. Carriers in most events are just reppu mules or LoS mules. CA is the second best choice since they're both good at day and beast at night.
>>
>>36269675
Would've been all over a Battlecruiser. Fast Battleships are such silly ships. Hood or Graf Spree a best.

Kinda unlucky (Or lucky?) ship though with how often she torpedoed and sent back for repairs. Especially early in WW2. Let's do it.

>Sorry, my internet shat itself a bit
>Option Selected: Saratoga
Here's how things are going to work.

Each ship has an array of statistics: Health, Armor, Evasion, Gunnery, Torpedoes, Anti-Air, Anti-Sub, Line of Sight, Luck, and Accuracy.

Combat rolls will always be 2d100. With naval guns, the first d100 is against the target's Evasion, and the second is against the target's Armor. Success on both results in Health damage equal to your Gunnery score modified by the target's Armor score. Success against Evasion but not Armor damages the target's armor, while success only against Armor results in a miss.

Attacks with aircraft work differently: the first roll is against the enemy task group's average Anti-Air score, and the second is against Evasion. Each successful attack deals a set amount of damage to the target's Health, every failed roll against Anti-Air reduces your effectiveness on subsequent attacks.

Luck rolls will be done in secret, but you'll get verbal cues when that roll is in your favor or the favor of someone in your squad. When you're "lucky", you'll get a small bonus to attacks and Evasion for that turn.

Saratoga's stats are as follows:
>Health: 79
>Evasion: 48
>Armor: 49
>Anti-Air: 35
>Luck: 30% chance
Saratoga has no inherent shooting or torpedo capability, but carries a standard force of two wings worth of Hellcat fighters (good for 4 damage if equipped as light bombers instead of fighters) and a wing of Avenger torpedo bombers (13 torpedo damage). Her main virtues are in the buffs she applies to her party, which you'll get anyway.

I'm giving ten minutes to discuss whether you really want to play as a primarily support-oriented character, and to pose any questions about mechanics.

Then we'll see where we stand character-wise.

No, unfortunately, I can't read Japanese, which kinda sucks, else I'd probably end up playing Kancolle, haha! Anyway...I spoilered those pictures by accident. Oh well. >>36270169
Can we re-roll? I don't really want to play support, but if no one else wants to re-roll, I guess it's fine. How would mechanics work if we were, say, Kongou?
>>
>>36269519
>the ability to render electronic guidance systems inert within a certain radius

So it's spamming ballistic missiles all day long?
>>
>>36270241
That was Sam Neil that wanted to see Montana. Last pic.
Also op: I like the backstory so far, sort of a fusion between Kantai Collection and the backstory for Arpeggio of Blue Steel.
>>
>>36270169
I'd be fine as Prinz Eugen, we can eventually get Big Sis Bismark, and be little sister to her and everyone else.
>>
>>36270270
If you'd prefer something else, don't support the Saratoga option just because you feel like you're in the minority.

Saratoga has very little in the way of her own defenses, and can't directly attack. She is a support character, which plays very differently to the others. And she's definitely NOT the definitive "best option".

Prinz Eugen is faster, more evasive, and has high accuracy and torpedoes that ignore armor at medium ranges.

Kongou is the best balanced. Nagato is set up to double-attack with bigass guns.

Didn't the Saratoga have 8 inch guns on itself? I suspect they were never used against another ship but she did have them.

Alright, internet died entirely in my apartment. Went to my lab to finish this up, saw that there's literally no agreement. So here we are.

Link to this post, reply with a number only. Don't factor in future equipment or upgrades into your decision, it's gonna be rare that you get the chance. Don't suggest other ships, I have my reasons for the ones being selected.

Put a "1" if you want to play as Nagato: heavy armor, mediocre evasion, two attacks with her guns, good luck.

Put a "2" if you want to be Kongou: good evasion and armor, one attack per round.

Put a "3" for Saratoga: mediocre stats across the board but solid luck and aircraft. Best played as support since you can't fire your 8-inch guns across the flight deck anyway.

Put a "4" for Prinz Eugen. Moderate health and armor, but fast, accurate, and her torpedo attacks bypass Armor.

After this vote we WILL be progressing with whatever gets chosen. So make your vote count, and only vote for the ship you ACTUALLY want.

You're Saratoga, and you're not exactly new to this whole thing. You weren't intended to be a carrier in the first place, but that's how you ended up. So really, is it a surprise you'd end up in the body of a girl over a hundred years after your keel was laid down? Ships have to be designed for the times, and you've reawakened in a pretty strange time.

They used to call you "Sister Sara", but in your little squad it may be more accurate to call you a mother. First there's Nagato: the leader of the team, and your hardest striker. She was the only Japanese battleship to survive the war, so she's seen more than her fair share of losses and silently carries more grudges than you do planes. You met her at Bikini Atoll shortly before you were both nuked into oblivion, so for a former enemy you feel strangely close to her now.

Prinz Eugen, or "Prinzessin" as you prefer to call her, is a heavy cruiser. After the fall of the Third Reich the two of you met at Bikini, like you did with Nagato. Strange, all three of you fought for different sides and yet you ended up in the same place... more or less. After the nukes Prinzessin lingered for a while as the Navy tried to keep her afloat, but she was so radioactive that they had to let her sink. You think she's secretly afraid of you and your planes after what happened to Bismarck.

And then, there's Kongou. You've never met her, but you know she sank some time during the war. You also gather that there's a fair bit of unresolved tension between herself and Nagato from back then, which confuses you a little: Nagato specifically requested her, out of her four sisters. You've never really worked up the nerve to ask Nagato about it, since she can be a bit scary sometimes when pressed about things she dislikes.

It's just the four of you at the moment: rather lonely, if you're used to having so many crewmembers around you all the time. But still, seeing as you're operating out of Hawaii, things could be worse.

>>
>>36271539
>>36271563
Look, let me put it to you this way.

It was a contentious vote, and I get the strong impression that there are a substantial portion of posters who don't want to play support, but who simply couldn't agree on a capital ship. And I don't blame them in the slightest for it.

This way everyone gets a shot to play as a character with a combat style they'd enjoy, and each of the character's personalities, thoughts, and backstories gets to be explored.

As a QM, I can think of no better solution. So that's what I've decided to do.
>>
>>36271367

>I've decided that I was overlooking the obvious solution: play as all four. Rotate between threads. I hadn't wanted to do that, because I really didn't anticipate this much frustration over character selection
Please don't, that sounds like more work than necessary. And it's only like 2 or 3 people getting buttmad at this, ignore them.

>>

Okay, now try that again while actually making sense.
>>
>>36271777
For fuck sake. If you go with votes by majority and set it to Carrier or Not Carrier. Most people wanted NOT CARRIER. They just disagreed on the ship.

If the vote had been labeled as Support or Combat you'd have lost the carrier option.

It's not going to kill the quest to get a few sorties as other vessels.

QM is also not mentally challenged so having a different MC isn't going to increase his workload by any staggering amount of cripple him.

Looking out the wide open windows of the Moana Hotel, feeling the sea breeze on your skin... you want to be out there with a solid headwind where you belong, not cooped up in here.

You stand up from the couch and barge headlong into Nagato's 'office': really a smaller hotel room that's been renovated for the purpose. She looks up at you from her work, red eyes full of confusion at your sudden intrusion.

"Nagato, we've gotta get outta here," you declare. "Come on, there's a beautiful Waikiki sunset out there and you're missing it! Again!"

She pushes some of her long black hair out of her eyes with a sigh. "You are probably right, Sara..."

"So it's settled," you interrupt. "Let's get our equipment on and go for a nice, romantic evening cruise! Just what the working woman needs to unwind before dinner!"

"... right," she finally agrees. "I will see you down at the water in ten minutes."

The second floor of the building has been converted for use as your docking facilities: since the Abyssals showed up, you're told the average sea level's risen nearly ten feet. Your shoes go on first: they've got a slight heel to them, and on each heel is a rudder. Your backpack slides into the mounting system on your back easily, putting that famous black banded funnel right behind your head. You quickly check to make sure your quiver is full and your diminutive AA guns are moving fine, before grabbing your crossbow and dropping into the water with a great spray of foam.

Nagato, in her own unique white uniform and skirt isn't long after you. Her splash is definitely bigger, thanks to her massive turrets.

"You were right," she admits as you begin your cruise along what used to be Waikiki beach. "It is beautiful out here."

Actually, I meant to quote /k/ripple on that one. Because there's really no need to do one first then vote to do the others. So long as there's sufficient support in my mind for two or more, I'll go ahead and do it as one update.

Almost instinctively, you pull a few blue-feathered bolts out of your hip quiver and load them one at a time into your crossbow, firing them out in a spread over the shimmering Pacific waters. About a hundred yards out the whistle of their fletchings grows to a roar, as they shift forms into old-fashioned Hellcat fighters, complete with unit numbers and a single bomb each. Damn, does that sound ever fill your heart with song. Those new carriers can keep their stupid drones and silly little jets for all you care.

“So,” you venture as you and Nagato turn back towards what's left of Honolulu's downtown district. “What about that new mission we're getting, huh? Is it finally something exciting?”

Nagato flicks a bit of kelp off one of her rifles as she sighs. “No, just more escort duty, I fear. An SDP convoy from San Diego: forty-four ships and eleven escorts.”

You let loose a low, appreciative whistle. “That's a biggun. They headed for Japan or Australia?”

“Australia,” she replies. “We will pick them up at the edge of the US Exclusive Zone, and assist until they've passed it.”

“Booooriiiing,” you complain. “Night or day?”

“Day,” she explains. “So at least we have that on our side.”

The two of you weave your way in amidst the ruined, partially-submerged buildings of Honolulu's downtown. It's not exactly what you remember from your time in the Navy: no drunken sailors, no cars puttering about, no touristy hula parties. Just seabirds now, and silent decay as the salt water slowly ruins the now-abandoned buildings.

"So what do you think about all this?" you finally ask your partner. "This whole 'kanmusu' thing? I still don't get it myself."

"It comes from a Shingon Buddhist belief," Nagato explains, "that objects over a certain age gain souls, and can be intelligent. That they are alive. All that had to be done was to find bodies to put us in."
(1/2)
>>
>>36272588
"And do you like it?" you ask quietly. "I mean, the war wasn't kind to either of us. Were we at peace when we were dead, I wonder?"

Nagato turns to face you, skating slowly to one side to keep pace, and gives you an honest smile. "Whether I came back as a demon, a god, or a human is irrelevant. What matters is that I got to see Mutsu again. That is a blessing, is it not?"

You nod quietly. "I got to see Lex again, so I s'pose I know the feeling. Even if we're fighting a war, at least we're doing it together, I guess."

"That is the right way to think of it, or so I believe," Nagato agrees as she finally turns back towards home. "And at the worst, this time we can make our lives mean something... and our deaths too, if the need should arise."

"Well," you mutter, "since we're talking about the old days already..."

Nagato casts a glance at you over her shoulder. "You want to know why I chose Kongou?"

You nod. "Yeah, that. I take it that it's kind of a touchy subject, so if you don't wanna talk to me about it, that's fine you know."

The battleship-girl sighs loudly, resting her gloved arms on the casemates of her rear turrets. "Though you are prying a bit too much, I understand why you are doing it... so I will tell you."

"You recall that I was the only surviving Japanese battleship, correct? How do you suppose I feel about that?"

"Not good," you ponder aloud. "You must feel like it's a mark of shame."

"One of many I bear," Nagato agrees. "Along with the shame of being treated as an outdated relic when compared to Kongou and her sisters, of being too weak to move my own anti-air emplacements and having to rely on another ship's boilers, of only surviving by flooding my own compartments to look as if I had sunk, of seeing all of my companions killed a few at a time as our resources and manpower dwindled."

"And yet you requested Kongou be brought here," you muse. "Why?"

"Because of all my memories from the war, leaving Kongou behind to sink alone is the most shameful," Nagato explains.

"So if you can't have Mutsu at your side," you realize, "you at least want to make up for abandoning Kongou?"

Nagato nods quietly as the Moana hotel comes into view.

To clarify the historical events I'm referring to, Nagato was so badly damaged by the end of the war and fuel was so scarce that her own AA emplacements were only partly functional, and had to rely on outside power. During Bull Halsey's drive in the last days of the war to wipe out the last Japanese capital ships she was even flooded to make it appear that she had been sunk.

Meanwhile, at Kure, the last heavy cruisers and battleships were stuck in harbor as AA batteries due to a lack of fuel oil and mines outside the harbor entrance. They were basically destroyed over a three day period, often regarded as revenge for Pearl Harbor by US naval historians.

Tone was even bombed again after she'd already sunk.

With a quick burst of speed, you catch up to Nagato, cutting her off and nearly causing a collision so that you can look her straight in the eyes. She's taken aback as you stare her down.

"You shouldn't yourself for those things," you declare loudly. "It was a war, Nagato! We all had our orders..."

Abruptly cut off by the roar of turboprop engines, you scramble to turn your left hip towards the fighters you sent out earlier. Each grows progressively quieter as they close in, until they slam into the side of your quiver with a series of loud thuds as bolts once more.

"Sorry," you tell Nagato sheepishly as you tuck the crossbow bolts away. "Nothing to report, by the way. Where was I?"

Nagato gives you a sly grin. "You were in the process of absolving me of my past failures and reassuring me that they in no way reflect on me now as a person."

"Right," you agree, shaking your blonde head. "That. Have you talked to Kongou about all this yet?"

"How could I?" Nagato asks you in response, ever so slightly averting her gaze. "What if she still blames me for leaving her?"

You heave a frustrated sigh... really, these girls need to learn how to be human at some point. "It's in the past," you insist. "I'm pretty sure you feel worse about it than she does. After all, why'd she be here if she still blamed you?"

"I bribed her with proper English tea," Nagato explains. "It was almost too easy."

"Yeah, yeah," you grin. "C'mon, let's get these things off and get some chow. I think Kongou's cooking tonight, right?"

Once you manage to get back up into the hotel's second floor and store your equipment securely, you head back upstairs towards the series of rooms that've been preserved for your use. As you pass, some of the US Military Police assigned to the buildings throw you salutes: you have no military rank, you realize, but then again how would you even BEGIN to assign a rank to a living aircraft carrier?

It's a respectful gesture, however, so you return their kindness with a salute of your own.

Upstairs, however, you're surprised to see Prinzessin in the kitchen cooking something that smells like Teutonic divinity given form. Kongou is playing a game on your television, and seems like she's really into it.

"What is this?" Nagato asks sternly, looking down to address Prinzessin. "I thought Kongou was supposed to be on mess duty tonight?"

"We traded places," Prinzessin explains in her thin little Bavarian accent. "I thought you wouldn't mind..."

Looking at Prinz Eugen in her little gray jacket and skirt, it's easy to see how she could be intimidated by the rest of you. She must be a foot shorter than Nagato, and she seems fairly young as well. Her "tonnage" is modest compared to the battleship-class girls you live with, and she's still got those girlish twintails of hers that suit her so well.

"Well, I suppose there is no problem if you simply switched in the schedule," Nagato admits. "What are you making?"

"Sausages in gravy with vegetables and Yorkshire pudding," Prinzessin replies, obviously relieved to not be in trouble with her commandant.

Nagato, meanwhile, turns to Kongou.

"What are you doing, Kongou?"

"Playin' a game," Kongou explains the obvious. "It's called Jet Set Radio Future, and it's pretty fun."

She puts the game on pause to sip tea out of a fine china cup looted from somewhere else in the building, and leans back to look at Nagato over the back of the couch.

"You know, fun. You remember fun?"

"I had fun once," Nagato replies, pretending to be recalling a distant memory. "It was awful. I determined never to have fun again, and to never let anyone else have fun either."

Wow. You've never seen Nagato be sarcastic before. That's new.

Kongou seems equally taken aback. "What, am in trouble here? It's not about swappin' spots with Prinzessin, right? What then?"

"I would like to talk to you about something," Nagato explains quietly. "Something from our past lives that I have to get off my chest."

"Okay..." Kongou frowns. "If it's important, I'll hear ya out. Other room?"

Nagato nods as Kongou leads the way out of the communal space the four of you share.

"Is everything alright?" Prinzessin asks nervously. "They're not going to have a fight, are they?"

"Nah," you reassure her. "I get the feeling everything's gonna be alright."

"So," you lead in slowly, "how's my favorite heavy cruiser doin'? You adjust well so far?"

Prinzessin nods as she checks the slow-cooker on the countertop before turning her attention to the pastries ready to go in the oven. "Sure, sis. It's good to have people here I know, though..."

As the German girl's voice trails off, you give her a tender hug. "It's okay, I know you miss Bismarck," you tell her. "But she was a fine warship, and I'm sure they'll bring her back like they did with us."

Prinzessin nods silently, fighting back a tear. "Yeah... I know. And hey, at least they didn't scrap her, right sis?"

You nod silently, remembering the day you found out that Enterprise had been sold for scrap... and that ships that were scrapped rarely return as kanmusu. There's just not enough left of them if they're torn apart like that, and Enterprise's bell and nameplate probably aren't enough to carry any trace of her soul.

"I'm sorry," you hear Prinzessin mutter. Looking down to her you see her looking back up at you with shame in her eyes... it must have been obvious that she'd accidentally reminded you of why American and British kanmusu are so rare.

"'sokay," you reply, wiping your eye. "Tell ya what, I'll try and pull some strings if I can so that when Bismarck comes back you're the first thing she sees. That sound good to you?"

Prinz Eugen's face lights up and she throws her arms around you. "Danke sehr, schwester," she tells you, momentarily forgetting to speak English. "Really, I can't even thank you enough."

You gently hug her back. "We sisters gotta stick out for each other, ya know?"

After a while dinner goes onto the table, and you call in Nagato and Kongou. Both young women look like they've been crying: their eyes are still red and a little puffy from it, and their hair is a little bit messier than you remember when you saw them last.

"You two okay?" you ask as you settle into your chair at the table.

"And yourself?" Nagato manages to ask, clearly noticing that you too have been crying.

You look down at the glass in your hand. "To friends no longer with us," you simply state, holding your glass aloft.

"To friends no longer with us," they quietly repeat, each raising her own glass.

It takes a while, but eventually normal conversation returns to the table. Or rather, as normal as a conversation between three warships can get.

"All I'm sayin'," Kongou insists loudly, "is that it's totally not fair to stick us on escort duty! We should be out there, takin' the fight to the Abyssals where they sleep!"

"I do not disagree, Kongou," Nagato agrees. "But you must realize that for kantai kessen to be a possibility, we must have our full force. We would have to gather Mutsu, your sisters, most of our cruisers, and many of our carriers. The Americans would need to join us as well."

"And that ain't happening any time soon," you conclude. "The admiralties of both our countries seem like they're set on screwin' us all a second time 'round."

"They might not trust us," Prinzessin offers. "They may see us as weapons, and for a weapon to have its own thoughts about how it should be used is suboptimal."

Nagato shrugs. "Perhaps."

It's now four in the morning, local time. Well before dawn.

Your team will be setting out this morning to meet with Convoy SDP 3429 at the edge of the American Economic Exclusion Zone, in order to bring them in to Pearl for resupply and so that the eleven escorts can pick up the outbound PSD Convoy back to the West Coast.

Nagato has you all washing up in the bathroom after a hasty breakfast, with the lights turned off.

"It will help you acclimate to the darkness," she explained it to you. Judging by how Kongou managed to step on Prinz Eugen's foot twice already, you're not entirely convinced.

However as you walk past the saluting MPs and drop into the surf, you find that your eyes are already perfectly adapted to the predawn dim. The breeze is fresh, the seas are calm: what better weather could you ask for?

Well in game they have less AA power so no air superiority which means no artillery spotting meaning no daytime double attack or cutins. They're very useful though when combined with pure fighters as they along the carriers to attack while maximising AA.

>>
>>36275712
The performance loss on the fighters wouldn't be too severe from your standpoint, but the logistics of it could be a nightmare.

It takes a long time to fit rockets or bombs to twenty Hellcats, and it takes a while to transfer new airwings to the flight deck. All that is reflected in the bolts you choose and how you fire them.

"Fly, my pretties," you whisper to yourself as you loose one bolt after the other from your crossbow. Each bolt explodes into a Hellcat like Athena popping out of Zeus's damn head, though they're not as well armed. You elect not to mount them with bombs, for now. They're just there for scouting purposes.

"What do you see?" Nagato asks you over your radio sets.

"I've got multiple Abyssals!" you shout back. "Count two... scratch, three cruisers, three destroyers. One unknown track... could be a torpedo!"

"Let's get 'em!" Kongou calls over to Nagato enthusiastically. "Come on, Naga-nee, we've got this!"

After a moment of thought, Nagato seems to agree.

"Sara, keep up your zig-zag. Prinzessin, take position between myself and Kongou, be ready to make a torpedo run on my word!"

"Awww yisss," you hear Kongou crow. "Let's save ourselves some jolly sailor boys!"

Though if we're going by this, torpedo bombers should also work as the Tenzan Model 12 (Tomonaga Squadron) gives +6 ASW, the best of any plane a standard carrier can equip.

>>You're worried that you might not be seeing everything. Send up the rest of your Hellcats with bombs to hit any subs that may show themselves.
that possible torpedo track has me worried.
>>
>>36276191
"I'm sendin' up some more Hellcats, rigged as light bombers," you announce. "I don't like the look of that track I'm hearin' about."

As you close in towards the area where the battle is in full swing, you're just putting your last Hellcat into the air. The ones you sent up earlier circle the sky like vultures, occasionally strafing an Abyssal ship here and there but mostly staying clear. Puffs of shrapnel and smoke fill the sky as the black ships try their damnedest to shake your birds off themselves, to little avail.

One USN ship is sinking by the stern, and two cargo ships have been hit as well. You can see survivors being plucked out of the water by fastboats already, though the convoy is now moving at flank speed to escape the area of operations before things get any worse.

"I'm commencing my run, give me some cover!" Prinzessin shouts as she makes a beeline for a four-hundred foot long monster of a ship. That's the thing about these guys... they look like treaty cruisers, except their hulls look more chitinous than anything else, and their eyes and gnashing teeth give them the appearance of a ravenous sea monster rather than that of a warship.

This sea monster, however, takes a torpedo right down its throat as Nagato and Kongou pound their targets with precise, long-range fire. Each shot from their magnificent naval rifles sends shockwaves through the water: were it not for your specially enhanced and redesigned ears, those shots would have burst your eardrums even from this distance.

How the hell did any of your crews even survive?

Then, a Hellcat dives for something just below the surface... it's a submarine! Extending your senses to what your "pilots" would be seeing, you spot four hulls, positioned to send their fish right into the heart of the convoy.

You're not going to let that happen.

Your bombs drop right where they need to go. Several tall fountains of salty spray rise from where they hit, and two of them are stained black with debris and blood from the Abyssal subs you've hit.

"This is Saratoga to SDP Convoy, engaged four subs to your North. Repeat, four subs, North. Downed two, please assist with ASW assets."

Shortly, you hear a male voice reply in your ears, through the magic of having a radio basically built into your head. "This is the Vincennes... solid copy, Sister. ASW choppers dust off in thirty seconds, thanks for the assist."

As what's left of the Abyssal surface fleet begins to withdraw, you get the nagging feeling that something's still wrong...

"The hell is that?" Kongou shouts, suddenly backpedaling in the water and firing her main guns.

Nagato leaps onto the bow of a nearby destroyer, and her eyes widen. "That was no torpedo, Sara! That was a battleship... one like us!"

As if to punctuate her pronouncement, a shell blasts the prow off the destroyer Nagato is standing on, showering her with shrapnel.

"NAGATO!" Prinzessin shouts, breaking off her second torpedo run to rally to her surrogate sister's aid.

"I am fine," Nagato insists. "The armor of the Big Seven was not just for show, concentrate on that battleship!"

Your improvised bombers have expended their payloads at this point, and your first round of fighters need to land soon. You can't recover and launch at once, and strafing the Abyssal battleship-girl won't be as effective as torpedoing her... decisions...

That's no reason to be a cunt, namefag.
>>
>>36276964
But seriously what are the ramifications of losing planes?

In-game, they are replaced instantaneously by bauxite and you certainly wouldn't risk damage to an expensive battleship if the alternative was to lose 50-60 bauxite. How are the mechanics here? We'd need to know to make a decision.
>>
>>36277132
The planes aren't piloted by real human beans, the convey's packed full of actual sailors. It's not being a cunt to prioritize taking out the battleship.

Correct me if I'm mistake on the planes part.
>>
>>36277160
You'd need to get a resupply, and those don't come automatically or quickly. Possibly-magical bolt-planes don't just fall out of defeated enemies' carcasses here.

You'd be running the risk of losing 20-24 planes out of a total force of 78.

Hard choice considering there aren't any fairy lives to lose here but since we're only one carrier with only so many fighters, we need as much air power as we can get in the case of enemy aircraft suddenly appearing.
>>
>>36277250
Apparently we are the red headed stepchild of the fleet from what we heard, so it would be a good idea to preserve our resources.

>"And that ain't happening any time soon," you conclude. "The admiralties of both our countries seem like they're set on screwin' us all a second time 'round."

On the other hand, if a convoy ship sinks because of any delays, that could hurt our reputation as well.

Pretty tough choice
>>
>>36276964
"Shit," you mutter, leaning to provide the best possible approach for the incoming aircraft to impact your quiver. "I've gotta recover my first fighter wing, but I'll keep the second on site!"

"No problem, sis!" Prinzessin replies cheerfully as her last spread of torpedoes skims across the surface. "We've got this under control."

"The enemy is one ship," Nagato agrees, weaving between shell splashes while tanking the occasional secondary round. "If we work together, we will definitely..."

"WIN!" Kongou shouts as she closes in with the Abyssal battleship-girl, whose eyes widen in shock as a gun barrel connects with her neck.

"BURNING LARIAAAAAT!" Kongou shouts almost comically as she swings the turret, leaving the Abyssal's neck at an odd angle as she sails backwards and skips off the surface before the two large, gun-bearing arms coming out of her back drag her to a stop.

Then, with a titanic blast, Nagato unleashes the full power of her broadside: twice in succession. The concussive force is terrifying as the weapons discharge, and you see one shot rip through the enemy's chest before the rest of the shots swallow her up in a giant maelstrom of water and foam and blood.

"Well," you mutter. "That was awesome. Your guns are as envy-inducing as ever."

"Hey, I helped too, ya know!" Kongou complains as Prinzessing giggles.

Nagato, however, seems unconvinced of her own apparent victory.

"I want to make sure," she insists as she skates her way cautiously over to the spot where the Abyssal went down.

Finally, looking down at the surface, she gasps. "No... no way..."

"What?" you demand as the last few fighters thump into the side of your quiver.

"She's alive," Nagato replies. Much to your shock, Nagato lifts a human-sized body out of the water, and carefully brings it towards your team.

I wonder who we'll get
>>
>>36277401
Sure enough, the Abyssal battleship-girl is still breathing. Her pale hair hangs limply over Nagato's arm, and her eyes are still barely open. The fire that you always see in her larger cousins' eyes is no longer there in hers: she seems exhausted, and for good reason. Though her neck has seemingly popped back into place, the gaping wound Nagato put in her side is still there.

But around where the remnants of the Abyssal girl's shattered ribs poke through, you see the flesh gently bubbling. There's not as much blood as you'd imagine either, and even more surprisingly what blood there is comes out red, not black.

The pale girl looks into your eyes, and you almost swear you can see something like fear in them.

"What the hell do we do now?" Kongou asks aloud in complete bewilderment.

And that's all for today. Hope that you enjoyed yourselves despite the rough start, and the archive is now up. The tags to look for are "Kantai Collection" and "Paradise Arsenal".

In spite of it all, I ended up enjoying myself enough to run a second thread, at least. Next week is busy for me, so it may end up being Monday. I plan to announce on Twitter: you can find me at @QMKingofHearts.

Hope to see some of you again next time, and I'll hang around briefly to answer any questions.

Sort of. It's leaning more heavily on Shinto/Shingon Buddhism for that sort of thing, so there's a strong yet undefined component of mysticism.

There could indeed be spirits involved.

That's just...no. It just doesn't happen.

There's Shota Admirals, Cool Older Man Admirals with beards, Old Badass Admirals and then there's naive young guy Admirals.

But no women.

The next thread will likely be Nagato POV, since she'll be taking a lead with the Abyssal. This subplot I have planned is also deeply entwined with Nagato's history.

And Kitakami isn't an impossibility: ships that were stricken rather than sunk merely have a much worse chance of being brought back, and may have severe memory problems. That's just kind of how it made sense to me while I was creating a setting and plot in my head around the notion of "warship X is now a cute girl, have fun with that".
