Why does traffic suck so much?

It's a hot August day and you're sitting somewhere between boredom and the surface of the Sun. You smack your dashboard in a vain attempt to get the AC working again, but like most things in the company truck, it's busted.

A drip of sweat falls down onto your lap, your fingers idly tapping the steering wheel as traffic ahead decides whether to move or convene an emergency session on how useless the highway is.

You glance over at your cell phone (as the truck's clock and radio are also busted), trying to get an idea on how long you have before your destination closes. 'I just have to go 3 blocks, how hard can it be?' You relax your foot off the gas ever so slowly and inch forward as the cars ahead also do the same. You're literally 20 feet from the off-ramp, but the shoulder's blocked off by a mix of traffic cones and construction signs. "If it's not winter, it's road repair season," you mumble to yourself.

Finally, traffic ahead moves forward just enough for you to get off the highway. Three quick stop lights later, and you park next to the loading dock of a decent-sized warehouse. There's barely any cars or trucks here... Or traffic of any kind. You double-check your time, and see you are still a good 20 minutes early before the warehouse proper closes. You click the engine off (the only thing that's not busted with the truck) and hop out, wiping some more sweat off your brow.

You are here for:

> a package for your law office (you're a clerk at said office)
> your monthly shipment of art supplies (you're an employee of a mom and pop arts and crafts store)
> your next delivery of packages (you're a FedEx/UPS driver)
> boxes of fresh produce and meat (you're a chef at a restaurant/diner in the city)
>>
>>36269400

Some important things to note as of right now:

The MC has yet to Awaken (that's what I'm looking to have happen in today's quest). in a way, we're still in character creation, as options you pick here will cement what the MC is, does, looks like., etc.

Second: this will be based upon the nWoD rules from the Mage: the Awakening book. I may pull from other books/sources, but that depends upon what you (the players) do/decide upon.

Third, I will be using a more simplified version of the rules from the Mage setting. This is to curtail how complex some things can be in it, along with people trying to game the system and do "chargen" shenanigans.

Otherwise have fun, enjoy it, and join in!

You enter through the service door, surprised at how little foot traffic there is. Normally packages get delivered via a bike courier or a FedEx driver, but sometimes larger shipments (usually a stack of old files from your office's storage) require you to come here and pick them up. You check for a third time, and yeah, the place is still meant to be open. Inside is a small office room with a standing table, loose papers and pens around, a flatscreen monitor humming slightly, a keyboard + mouse sitting on top as the cables from both snake down through a hole in the table. A cold breeze blows down the back of your shirt, sending a shiver down your spine as the AC in the building keeping the office here pretty cool, compared to the blistering heat outside.

"Hello? Anyone here?"

Silence answers your question. Odd, Brock (the manager of the warehouse, and a nice acquaintance) usually never leaves the standing table unless it's an emergency. The door to the warehouse proper (next to the standing table) hangs ajar, and a small buzzer sits on the table, a sign above it reading, "Ring me if no one's up here!"

> Ring the buzzer
> Call out for someone again
> Poke your head through the door and into the warehouse proper
>>
>>36270003
> Ring the buzzer
If no one answers for a while, go right in.
>>
Note:

I'll leave voting open for 15-20 minutes before closing (usually with me posting saying the result of the voting and me writing the next scene.) If we tie on votes I'll roll a 1d2 and have RNG decide, just so we can have the quest continue onward.

>>
>>36270367
Not everyone votes for every vote, especially if the option you want is already winning
>>
You jab the buzzer with your thumb, and a bell (not unlike a school bell) rings just on the opposite side of the door. After a few seconds of silence, you jab it again. No noise other than the slight echo of the bell ring bouncing off the walls inside.

"Ok, this is getting annoying." You don't have time for this bullshit; the sooner you get those files, the sooner you get back to the office, and the sooner you can get home and take a nice, relaxing shower. You head on through the door and start looking for Brock, as he'll know where exactly the files you're looking for are at (multiple firms store their files here, and as curious as you are, you know just how illegal snooping into those files can be.) As you glance around, you see three main areas he could be hiding at where he wouldn't have heard the bell.

Rolled 2 (1d2)

We're tied between the office and the loading docks.

1 is the office, 2 is the docks.
>>
You're half-tempted to go to his office first, but with it being this close to his normal closing time, he's probably at the docks giving a final rundown/talk with his employees, so that's where you go to first. Besides, it's the furthest one out of the way, as if he's not there then either one of his employees can lead you to him, or you just head back and can hit both his office and the bathroom quickly.

You head through the half-covered door (it has one of those heavy, semi-opaque plastic sheets hanging over it) and nearly gag at the sight and smell before you.

There's at least a half-dozen.... husks is the best way to describe them, lying on the ground, all dressed in loose, simple clothing, their skin all dry adn wrinkled like a raisin, mouths agape in silent screams, the tiniest blip of some red substance leaking out of their necks.

"Oh God..." You clutch your hands together and look away, trying to get the sight of their bodies out of your mind. Your throat clenches tight and your jaw begins to hang heavy, and turn to your left as you puke up the remnants of your lunch. You take a few seconds to catch your breath, running through the door and away from the bodies. You've barely pulled your phone out of your pocket before a hideous laughter echoes all around you.

"I can smell your fear, human... Do you think you can get out of here before I find you?"

You were walking leisurely before. Now you're at breakneck, about to piss your pants in fear speed, and you make it to the door much, much faster. Your free hand is trying to dial 911, but lack of inexperience with smartphones (combined with your pumping adrenaline due to the freaky voice you just heard) makes it difficult without looking at the screen proper. You barely have your hand around the doorknob when you notice, 'Wait, this was open when I walked in... Why is it closed now?'

You let go and leap back a couple feet, just as a shadowy figure drops down right where you were standing, the cement beneath him cracking slightly. If you were standing there you would've surely been pinned to the ground.

Or worse.

"You're quick, human," the figure says, slowly rising to his feet. "Good, I like my prey to put up a fight."

"Stay away!" You turn around and run back to the docks, bursting through the sheets and leaping past the husks. You continue zigging and zagging through the aisles, cardboard boxes whizzing past you, as you look to your left, right, and above you, seeing if the figure is anywhere near.

"You can't hide forever, human... I can hear your heart beating..."

You try and calm your breathing, in a small attempt to slow the beating of your heart, at least so it's not trying to burst out of your chance. You glance down and are able to dial out to 911, the phone glowling softly in your hand. Nearby is a stack of aluminum pipes, used in the assembly of more storage racks. You grab one, if for nothing else than to try and wave around like a sword should this freak try and get the drop on you again.

Not seeing him anywhere near, you creep towards the dock doors, glancing around you constantly to stop him from pulling the same dropping trick he did just moments ago. The husks are still there, but you keep your gaze averted from them and instead at the chains on the dock doors. Your phone line clicks off, and you glance down and see the phone call ended because of no signal.

"Fuck," you quietly mutter to yourself. You shove the phone into your pocket and begin yanking on the chain, the dock door clattering open.

"Oh no you don't!" Instantly the figure appears by the curtain, rushing towards you. The dock door's barely up to your waist, but if you don't leave now he's surely going to get ahold of you.

It's difficult to do 10 agains on a quest thread, I just weigh any 10s a bit heavier than I would previously.

'Fuck this, I'm out of here.' You drop to the ground and start rolling. The man leaps at you to grab anything, but he just misses as you roll through onto the docks proper as the door slides shut right behind you. You continue rolling until you get to the edge, where a quick hop off and you're running to your car.

You struggle to get the key in the ignition, but eventually it clicks and the engine starts up. You breathe a sigh of relief.

And then the figure lands on the hood of your truck.

"Now I'm pissed, human!" His eyes are glowing an inhuman red, skin paper white pale and almost bubbling under the setting sun. But that doesn't stop him from reaching back, fist clenched, and slamming it THROUGH the hood. The engine sputters a bit, and then dies.

"No... NO!" You try and start it up, but nothing happens.

"Nowhere to go now, meat." He licks his lips, pulling his fist out of the engine, hand dripping in motor oil and transmission fluid.

So this is it, huh? Getting snacked on by some supernatural thing, drained to the point of looking like a mummy. This can't be it.

You won't let it end this way.

A pure, white light beams down hard onto you, as the tendrils of the void creeping up your leg disappear into dust. You feel it guiding you along, as though it was holding your hand. You are barely aware of it, but before you stands a vast tower, as lights and colors stream out from atop it. Your feet crunch under the cold snow, and you shiver slightly at the wind whipping all about you. You slowly step inside, to what you can best describe as some sort of sterilization room, as thin silk veils cover four-poster beds that look to have once had people sleeping in them, for their sheets are disheveled, pillows barely resting on the bed.

Further in is what looks to be a table, with a book and pen resting on it. You wander over and flip it open. Inside are people's confessions, the sins they have committed and the guilt they feel. And on the bottom of each page, they sign it with their name. Japanese, Korean, Hindu, English, French, Spanish, and several other languages you can't even guess as to their origins fill the pages. Something inside of you tells you to pick up the pen, and before you realize it, you've started writing.

You barely have time to form readible sentences, your hand is moving so fast to keep up with the memory playing through your mind. She was a gorgeous woman, a trusted friend and your one true love. But then you met that sexy first-year at the law office, and you just couldn't keep it in your pants. You tried to tell yourself that it was just a one time thing, but then that taste wasn't enough, you had to have her again. And again, and again, and again. By the time your wife found out you were surprised no one else at the office knew. She left you... God, over a year ago, and no one at the office was none the wiser. You broke it off with the intern, tried calling the missus, sending her emails and texts, but she never came back home.

You've tried hard to keep it in your pants since then, but that temptation is still there. Finally, you sign the page, 'Michael Santos,' and close the book. You feel a soft hand touch your shoulder.

"Belief can be a powerful tool in the right hands."

You whip your head around to see who touched you, but you only see the back of the truck. You whip your head forward again, and the creature is still there, his fist looking ready to punch through the window.

But it's still dripping in oil.

"Burn, bitch!" You scream at him, and feel a surge of power leave you and enter the truck. An arc of electricity sparks up through the hole in the hood, striking him in the chest and his oil-soaked arm. He immediately rolls off the truck in pain, scrambling to put out the flames on his arm, ripping off his shirt. You climb out of the truck, him screaming obscenities at you.

"Fucking human, what did you do!" His arm is still on fire, but now he's looking ragged, that imposing fear and strength he was radiating earlier quickly fading away.

"Isn't it obvious," you say to him. He gives you a quizzical look. God, are people always this dense? "I set you on fire."

His cocked look turns into a face of pure horror. "W... Warlock!" He charges at you, waving his still-aflame arm at you.

You can't help but grin as you quickly sidestep his charge, your balled fist already flying at his jaw. Another surge of power leaps out of you, and your fist crunches into his cheek. The creature goes flying clean off his feet, landing a good four feet to your left, the entire right side of his jaw ripped clean off, a viscous pink goo dripping down where blood should be pouring from. With his one good hand he holds it to his flapping jaw, and leaps back into the warehouse through the service entrence.

"Why you runnin' punk!?" You beat on your chest in primal fury, goading him to come back out. After several seconds, when nothing does appear, you take a big sigh of relief. Sometimes the bark is worse than your bite. What the hell did I do? You'd taken some boxing lessons before, mainly just to help you keep in shape (and show off the guns to some ladies) but you've never thrown a punch that hard. And you definitely don't think the engine would have sparked at that exact moment to light the oil on his arm on fire.

And each time, you felt this wave of energy flow out of you when you instinctively wanted those things to happen. Plus, he called you a.... Warlock? Isn't that something out of the movies, like a name for a wizard... Fuck if you know.

You pull out your phone and call 911, with full bars no less. You tell them you were assaulted at the address of the warehouse, and you think some punk trashed your car. After hanging up with the police, you call the office and tell them the same story (because who's going to believe you if you tell them about the crazy human-oid looking thing and how he punched a hole in your engine block) and begin documenting the scene for the insurance companies to deal with.

About 10 minutes pass before the first cop car pulls up. They quickly sweep the premise, and find nothing but the bodies at the docks. You begin answering questions for them when another car pulls up. This one looks more like a sedan than a normal police car, and a young woman steps out.

"Are you the one that called this in," she gestures to the warehouse.

"Yeah," you nod at her.

She waves her hand at the other officers, who quickly step away. "I'd like to ask you some more questions." She glances over at your truck, seeing the hole in the hood. "And I guess your ride's busted. Want me to drive you to the station?"

Incidentally, do you have our stats written out somewhere or something?
>>
"Honey, you can drive me to wherever you want," you grin at her.

This was certainly not what she was expecting you to say, and blushes slightly. "Uhh... right. Care to join me," she motions to her car.

She lets you into the back, and begins to drive around. She asks similar stuff to what the cops did, like why were you there, what did you see, can you describe the perp to us, normal police questions. Things you've heard hundreds of times in various interrogation rooms for clients your boss was defending.

"So, do you wear contacts, or is that eye color natural?"

That's new. "What do you mean? My eye color is..." You were going to answer brown, but you glance into the rear view mirror, and instead of your hazel brown eyes staring back at you, instead a pair of deep emerald green eyes are looking back. "What the hell?"

"And I'm guessing that's not you dying your hair that color."

"Huh?" You pull down a lock of hair, and instead of your wavey black hair, it's now a deep crimson red, almost a dark violet. "What the fuck!?"

She begins to giggle a bit. "Ahh, that explains some things then. So, tell me," she glances back at you, her deep blue eyes flashing white for a split second, a grin creeping up her face. "What Tower did you sign your name to?"

Page 2 has the spells you know so far.

And for today's quest, besides the Awakening, you earned 6 exp. Here's a breakdown of how to earn more expertise in a skill:

Attribute: New dot x 5 (for example, to go from 2 to 3 Wits, we'd need 15 exp)
Skill: New dot x 3 (so 3 exp for Occult 1, 12 exp for Academics 4)
Skill Specialty: 3 (3 exp to gain expertise on a specific subject, like Law in Academics)
Ruling Arcana: New dots x 6 (our ruling arcana are Forces and Spirit)
Common Arcana: New dots x 7 (7 of the other schools of Magic)
Inferior Arcana: New dots x 8 (our Inferior Arcana - the one we suck ass at - is Prime)
Rote: 2 points per dot (Rotes are spells we know instinctually and can cast basically whenever we want, so long as we have the Mana for them)
Merit: new dots x 2 (kinda like feats, these are normally small bonuses to our character)
Gnosis: New dots x 8 (our connection to the Supernal Plane, where we draw our magical power from. More dots means more magical power, and more schools of magic we can eventually master)
Wisdom: New dots x 3 (the morality system in nWoD, hit 0 Wisdom and it's game over. Basically don't abuse your newfound powers and it won't go down)
Willpower: 8 exp (you can blow a willpower point to get a +3 bonus to a roll of a spell you cast, and are also used to learn more Rotes)

everyone does. in play testing, everyone kept playing the technocracy, this offended the hippies who were making the game, so they kept on piling atrocities on the technocracy until people "got" that they were supposed to be "evil". For the love of fuck use the new exp system (current costs-1 become static costs; exp drips in more slowly). The old system takes forever to advance arcana/gnosis.

Better yet, don't use exp at all and just progress Magic Mike based on the quest actions/events. Reward = degree of success x risk of failure
