A dull pain aches through your head as you take in the unfamiliar world around you.

“How the…Where am I? You grumble and rub your forehead in confusion.

A disparate forest of bizarre and multicolored trees extends seemingly infinitely in every direction. Each individual plant is outwardly unique in either shape or color. A single breeze carries through the forest canopy, but the plants all sway in different directions. Your surroundings teem with life and activity, yet there are no other creatures in sight. This isn’t your world, that you are sure of. You come to the conclusion that this surely must be a dream.

You pinch your thigh in a crude attempt to wake yourself. No change. You pinch yet again, much harder this time, but there’s still no change.

You sigh in frustration. Try as you might, the plants still have their unusual colors to them such as red and purple and the tree above you still defies your logic by twisting into the sky in a helical shape.

“How did I get here?” pervades your thoughts the most, so you think back to the previous night.

Blank. Black would be more appropriate, regardless you remember nothing. In fact as you try to remember anything from your past, the result is still the same, black.

Panic starts to build inside of you.

Surely, if you recognize the possibility of a past you must have had one. Surely, if you recognize the possibility that you may have been dreaming, that means at some point you had to have gone to sleep. All this means that you have to have existed in some way before you woke up here in this world. Right?

You yell in anger and run your hands through your hair as if to shake out something, anything from your past.

“Come on, anything. Anything!” you cry out.

Ed.

Ed? The name flashes through your head. Is this your name? Is this just a random thought your mind gave you to calm you? No, it’s your name, you’re sure of it, probably.

“Ed.” You say aloud to confirm the familiarity of the name. As you do, off in the distance you see a small glimmer of light floating among the plants.

You approach it slowly. As you come closer, you see that it is a small creature.
“A fairy?” you wonder and remember facts about the gentle and reclusive nature of fairies, yet not where those thoughts originated from.

It is indeed a fairy. A small female figure floats merrily along the flowers, unaware of your presence as she hums a tune. Her hair shimmers in the sunlight, as does her skin. The sight of another living creature brings you some measure of peace, as you know that at least you’re not alone here.

You want to talk to her, yet you are afraid of scaring her off, hell you’re not even sure if she speaks the same language as you, so you think for a moment and eventually decide to

You clear your throat and say “Hello! Umm, do you understand me? If you can, can you speak?”

The fairy immediate stops humming, freezes up, and turns around.

Her face displays delicate and appealing features. Her eyes are open wide in fear and her mouth is slightly agape, all of which you find quite cute.
You really hope that you didn’t scare her, even if it turns out that you can’t communicate with her through words, you still hold on to the hope that maybe you’ll find a nonverbal way of conversing.

You smile gently in an attempt to show that you mean no harm. “Can you speak?” you ask again softly, in case she didn’t hear you the first time.

She closes her mouth and her eyes no longer show fear, in fact she smiles slightly. This is a good sign.

“Can you speak?” You hear a small voice say in a mocking tone. You turn to her to see that the small smile has transformed into a mischievous grin. “Do all humans sounds as dumb as you, or were you just dropped on your head as a baby?”

You’re shocked and speechless, you now stand with your mouth agape.
She floats up closer to your face so now you’re eye to eye with her.

“What? Did you extend the full use of your vocabulary earlier? No more words~?” She taunts and giggles evilly.

You close your mouth and recover from the shock, you’re about to reply just before you are cut off.

“Hurry up, you idiot~, I don’t have all day to spend with boring retards like you.” She jabs into your chest with a pointed finger.

You take a deep breath to calm yourself.

You start. “My name is Ed an-“
“Ed!? Ed!?” She interjects and laughs. “A short name for a short-witted man!” She giggles while on the verge of snorting from how hard she’s laughing. She kicks her bare legs in the air while holding her stomach.

You allow her to collect herself.

“Ahem, I um I’m sorry, Ed.” She laughs to herself. “Go on.”

It takes a great amount of willpower not to grab the fairy in front of you and squeeze the life out of her. It would be so easy. You calm yourself, yet again.

“I see that the reputation of fairies is well-deserved, it seems.” You reply coolly.
“Oh?” Her interest audible in her voice. “You are familiar with the fey of this world are you? It wasn’t you that I heard caterwauling like a newborn animal not a few moments ago?” Her lips stretch into a grin.

You grunt in frustration, you really just want to leave this place already. To where, you don’t know, but you surely don’t want to be here for any longer than you have to.
She floats prone, as if laid flat on the air itself. She places her hands underneath her chin “Oh Ed. You may not be as boring as I had thought, but that’s no compliment to your intelligence. Think of yourself as the court fool, if you can think that hard.”

She straightens herself out and turns around, her arms crossed behind her back.

“Okay, Court Fool Ed, your payment for entertaining me is that you may ask me any one question that you want and I will answer it to the best of my ability.” She giggles slightly at the end of her proposition.

You take a moment to consider her offer

“Where am I?” you ask the rude fairy, suppressing the urge to refuse her offer outright.
“A good question. I’m impressed, honestly.” She cups her chin in thought for a few seconds and then begins.
“To put it simply, you are trapped.” The fairy says with a serious look on her face.
“Trapped? Care to elaborate?” You respond.

“This whole world is someone’s garden, a very large garden, for someone very powerful, mind you. Even I don’t know how far this world goes on for.” She pauses for a moment. “Let me tell you this, Ed. I’ve lived here my whole life and neither I nor any of my ancestors have never seen anyone leave this world, other than through death.”

The weight of what she says hits your stomach and you feel a wave of dread come over you. You’re homesick for a home you’re not even sure exists. The burden of the situation hits you again and again and all you can do is hang your head in frustration.

“I’m going to get out of here.” You announce more for yourself than for the fairy. “Where can I find this garden owner?” You ask angrily.
“One question only, stupid.” She flicks your forehead. “Regardless, it’s not like I know, but keep one thing in mind, Ed. You don’t belong in this world, understand what that implies, if you can.”
She flies back a few feet and points behind you. “Follow the flower path that way for a while, then you will truly understand the situation that you are in.” She pauses, “Resist the urge to trudge on while staring at your feet, Court Fool Ed.”

She flies away like a blur of sunlight.

You stare after her for a few moments and then eventually turn around. For as rude as she was you’re slightly sad that she left you alone. The flower path that she mentioned is there behind you, but you hesitate. You look at your side to see a sword, familiar, yet not. The mere possession of it reassures you. Seeing as you have no other choice, you march forward.

You pass trees of all types as you walk, all of which you’ve never seen before. One stands out in particular as it appeared to be made completely out of glass, yet sap ran out of its trunk.

As you walk you here a loud banging sound in the distance and run up to investigate. Before you can you are pulled out into a mound of bushes.

“Shhh.” A female’s voice whispers in your ear as she covers your mouth and points. Heavy footsteps crunch not too far in front of you, a large man in the shadows stops and picks up something off the ground, a body. That of a young girl, she’s dressed in unusual clothing which is covered in blood. He carrying something else that you’ve never seen before, it appears to be a long metal tube.

“He killed her.” The voice behind you says almost imperceptibly, for a second you wonder if you actually heard her voice and not your own thoughts.

If he did kill her than he should be stopped. You try to get up, but the woman behind you holds you back.

Your sense of justice will not allow you to just watch as a potential murderer gets away. You have to know the truth.

“Please don’t!” The woman whispers desperately, clutching your arms even harder.

You force your way through the woman’s grasp and unsheathe your sword.
The sword feels comfortably familiar in your hand as you approach him, as you do you hear him humming a tune.

“Stop!” You announce intending to get to the bottom of this.

He stops humming and turns around.

“Did you kill that girl?” you demand as you stare into the dark eyes in front of you.
“Yes.” He responds simply. “It is what I do to all those that lie to me.”
“Lie? You killed her over a lie?” you press.
“Not just her, many and not just for lies.” The large man responds flatly. " I do not kill wantonly, only those who stand in my way."
“You killed a helpless girl, your life is forfeit!” You shout and slowly walk forward eyeing him up for weapons. All you see is the strange metal object he grips in his hand.

Suddenly, he vanishes.

“What do you intend to do about it?” You hear his voice directly behind your ear and instinctively slash behind you.

You hit nothing.
You turn back and see him still in front of you.

“Tell me if you would. Did you happen to come across anyone on your way here?” He asks as if nothing happened. “I sense a great deal of frustration in you, I know I could help you, if only you would so kindly help me.”

You charge at him full speed and thrust expertly with your sword.

Again you hit nothing.

“I am very disappointed.” You hear behind you as something heavy hits the back of your head.

The pale white grass feels very soft on your face, as if you laid on a well-made fur.

“I look forward to meeting again. It’s too bad the circumstances won’t be so pleasant.” You hear the man’s voice drift away as you fade in and out of consciousness.
“I just want to go home.” You say quietly as your face rubs against the grass.

A sharp pain aches through your head as the unfamiliar world becomes an unpleasant world.

“I can help you.” The female from before stands above you.

You turn your eyes upward to gaze upon her. Long brown hair flows past her shoulders and frames a gentle visage quite well. Her body is framed with a long white dress of a style you’ve never seen before. She extends her hand to help you up. You take it and rise, feeling the pain throb through your head as blood pumps through it harder.

“I’m Cecilia” She says as you brush the dirt off your clothes.
“Ed.” You reply shortly, the pain suddenly throbbing harder.
“I tried to stop you.” She says in a scolding manner. “That man is a murderer, plain and simple. He will stop at nothing to get what he wants.”

“You seem to know a lot, were you born here?” You ask curiously.
“No, I’ve only been here for a few days. I don’t remember where I was before here. I imagine it’s the same for you?” She raises an eyebrow.

“Yeah, but I intend to leave.” You point in the direction that you were originally headed. “A fairy told me to go that way. Do you know what’s over there?”
“Nothing there at all but a maze of trees that people get lost in.” She says quickly. “A fairy you said? Did she happen to be called Vi?”
“Never caught her name.” You quickly explain the features of the fairy you met earlier.
“That’s her!” Cecilia says excitedly. “Let’s go back, she can probably help you more than you think.”

“But she told me to go that way.” You pause “Wait, her name only has two letters, that little….”
“Like I said, it’s not safe over there.” Cecilia pulls your arm in the direction that you came.

The constant pain in your head doesn’t allow you put up any more of a resistance. The throbbing is making your vision feel foggy, you long for the feel of that soft pale grass on your face.

You blink hard to push the sleepiness from your mind and press forward.

“Why are you so interested in helping me?” you ask as the two of you make your way back.
“Well, there aren’t very many people around here.” She continues “You and that girl are the first ones I’ve seen since I got here.”

You close your eyes in rest for a few seconds.

“That girl dying didn’t seem to bother you too much.” You mutter sleepily.
She crosses her arms behind her back. “To be honest, it didn’t and if you died right now, it would only bother me slightly more.” She trails off.
“That’s nice to know.” You respond lazily not wanting to talk much more due to your head.

“Vi~!” Cecilia shouts as the two of you journey through the bizarre forest. “Vi~.”
“It sounds like a pig squealing.” You hear a familiar voice call out. “Ah, a pig and a retard. Perhaps I ought to think of some children’s fables involving you two characters.”

You look up to see the shimmering and deceptively cute fairy staring back at the two of you.

Cecilia prattles on with Vi about her adventures or something of the like. You aren’t playing too close attention as you spot a comfortable looking patch of grass.
“A little nap will do me well. It will help calm my frustrations.” You think to yourself.

You fight the urge to nap. You breathe in deeply and look up at the sky. It has darkened significantly without you even noticing. The sound of sudden raucous giggling startles you to attention.

“He got hit in the head!? Must not be the first time!” Vi’s legs tense and her toes curl from how hard she’s laughing.

At least your resurging anger has woken you up a bit.

“You guys are helpless!” She hiccups and then clears her throat to calm down. “I guess I can help you find a way to escape from this world.” She hiccups again and grins. “I know I won’t be lacking for entertainment on the journey.”
Having not caught all of their conversation you are a bit confused. “I thought you said that you didn’t know a way out?” you ask.
Vi cocks an eyebrow up. “You never cease to disappoint.” She floats closer to your face. “I said that while I don’t know a way out myself, I may be able to lead you two in the right direction.” She continues, “If you had followed my directions, you’d probably have some vague idea about how this world was divided, and then maybe you’d be able to piece it together.”

“Enlighten me.” You say, temper rising.

“In time, perhaps. But for now your confusion and the resulting bumbling will be my payment for helping you. Sound good?” Vi rests her head in both her hands and tilts her head.

“Sounds good!” Cecilia shouts out, before you have a chance to say anything.

“Well, that’s great. Rest up and in the morning we’ll be headed out.” Vi floats very closely to your face and looks directly into your eye. “Looks like someone is going to have fun night of sleep tonight!” She floats away.
“What do you mean?” You grab at her fruitlessly.
“You’ll see~.” She calls out teasingly as she fades back into the forest.
