You have seen and done much in the past few days. Elizabeth works hard to unlock the secrets of the Skyl console, and you have uncovered a great deal of information regarding your own kind and the fate of the other hives. You have even discovered that at least one hive still lives, the Obsidian Queen, who aided in the destruction of your mother. Union space has been quiet by comparison, with news broadcasts regarding the recent Ceph raid dominating the news and overshadowing the typical torrent of political pol results and local election campaign speeches. Your pod watches as a patrol of frigates and corvettes move through the system, sifting through the wreckage in vain for life pods or signs of life, and then enter a parking orbit over the remaining mining colony.

Welcome back to Hive Queen Quest!

Finished Research

>Compact hull design
The same principles of the multilayered carapace, but on a larger scale. This allows your ships to be equipped with up to two armor types of different kinds at once.

>Vibroblade
By incorporating the vibroblade into your warriors, they now are capable of utilizing small micro muscles to vibrate the blade at a high enough frequency to assist in cutting through material, increasing their armor piercing capabilities.

>Reactive armor
Through a series of reactive muscle fibers within the carapace your drone can absorb kinetic attacks with far greater efficiency than normal, but at the cost of being more vulnerable to energy attacks.

Could really do with researching something to cut through the jamming static that cuts us off from our drones. Having even a basic counter, or at least stopping it from inflicting lots of pain and providing some simple direction protocols for cut off units would go a long way to mitigating its effects against us.
>>
Hey, so does anyone remember that idea for an AC-130 drone?

Someone want to come up with a design for it?
>>
So, The Skyl ship called us the Red Queen? Makes sense. At some point do we want to redo our colors with some heavier red accents? Or any other patterns?

I think its time we tell unity about the skyl ship, and possible integration between the two, but only if they pay us some tech for it.

Your speaker watches curiously as Doctor Vaughn struggles with the innards of the Skyl console, the white crystal is positioned nearby. Her voice is muffled from within the device as she speaks. "I think I figured it out, or at least partially, but now comes the testing!"

She emerges with a look of eagerness. "I think that the white crystal and the console are linked, partially because I get the same vibe from them, "She shrugs and points to a small pedestal on the console. "And partially because it has a slot that perfectly fits it. Plugging in strange alien devices just to see what they do isn't exactly the scientific method, but I figured it would need amending once I gained telepathy from an alien orb."

She walks over to the crystal and picks it up. "I think this was clearly built by the hive, possibly in an effort to reverse engineer the technology of the other crystals, while the console seems to obviously be of Skyl origin. I think it was a kind of joint research venture, but it's impossible to know more until we flip the switch and see if the lights come on." She looks at your speaker and lightly rattles the crystal in her hand. "I think I've managed to reroute the power from the damaged components, so it should be perfectly safe... for the most part."

In the ask.fm
>The base color of the queen is a pale white, with red accents and stripes along the carapace where it grew and developed most shorty after the queen emerged from the cocoon. There is a dark red ring on the lower left leg where a fracture healed, and the ends and corners of the carapace form are a light red or pink. The color is due to the queen's diet of the red jelly of the hive spring during early adolescent development.

>>
>>36210244
>Speak with Skyl engram
So can we research the Psionic Cannon?
I presume that researching the dead Crystal also benefits the Psonic Cannon and vice versa

So guys, when do we let Theseus in on our game?
I think we pretty much have all the tech we needed to trade from him, but additional military assistance in exchange for info could be useful, unless we can somehow wrangle him up into a binding military alliance.

>>
>>36210302
>i would have to disagree on this point
Then quote where "Red Hive" is in the actual update. Disagreement should be based on facts, no? The queen literally only transmitted information about a dead hive.
>You send the ship footage of the ancient hive on Raligha, as well as basic information surrounding the circumstances of the hive's destruction as far as you are aware.
A *dead* hive, not a red one.
>>
>>36210335
We still need shields. Shields would make our ships much more resilient against non-crystal-aligned enemies.
>>
>>36210365
We can order shields that can be reverse-engineered from the black market using Lyle's funds, though I doubt they would be top of the line.
>>
>>36210309
Because, mate, that would require disassembling the Queen.
That, and any scenario where the Queen has to go mano a mano with something/someone else is a scenario where we've already lost.

>>36210335
We could still get shield tech from him.
Although shielded ships are likely to be significantly more expensive than unshielded ones. So we may want to save shields for important ships.

>>36210354
You're being a faggot, anon.
>>
>>36210336

Hahah no. Why.

The hive is in a position of information arbitrage so long as they remain ignorant of each other. They can't gain except by trading through us.
>>
>>36210309
There will never be a point where the queen will actually encounter another living being that we don't trust. That's what we have speakers for.

You quickly send a burst of data through your pod, translated to the Skyl language. The drive ship turns several sensor devices to your pod in response.

"You were seeking the Gardener, why?"

The ship sends a signal in return.
"Proposed rendezvous designated at this location at request of Gardener for testing of first Godsplitter prototype. Location of prototype unknown, assumed failed and destroyed: location of agent Seer unknown, assumed dead."

"You were working together? What was the extent?"

"Proposed research efforts unknown: security clearance insufficient. After rendezvous and testing all critical information updates were to be made at discretion of research agent Seer."

You have a suspicion that this agent may have been the Skyl body found within the Raligha hive. You send images of the white crystal and the console.

"Detailed operational schematics unknown. Designation: project Godhead."

"What is Godhead, and what is the extend of your intelligence?" You ask the question somewhat awkwardly, although you're not sure if there is a way to question a being's sapience that isn't awkward.

"Godhead details unknown. Results of research to be uploaded to archives after rendezvous." It seems to pause for a moment, as if to catch its breath. "Engram designation: Heretic. Synthetic psychology derived from Generationals: Skyl born free of enhancements after rebellion. Engram systems are based on the thought processes of one hundred and thirty seven thousand individuals."

You think for a moment before you make your offer. "There is a possibility of using records to bring back the Skyl race, would you approve?"

It's response is simple and blunt. "Born free or as servants?"

"Born free," you say, "of course. My children are happy to serve, and are more than capable." You feel the pod shimmy slightly with pride as it relays the message.

"That is agreeable." The engram, Heretic, it seems to call itself, continues to devour the debris field without slowing. "The Skyl were born servants, but died free."

You ponder on the ship's design for a moment before you change the subject. "What are the mechanics behind your drive?"

You are sent a mixture of images in addition to a normal response, of strange, semi-organic devices throbbing with radiation. Skyl engineers stand behind blast shields as worker drones in lead lined carapaces make inspections. "Designation: Rip Drive. System constructed from samples of holy relics integrated with hive technological systems. Technical data restricted at top level."

A newly completed frigate emerges from the splayed out hull of the drive ship.

"Are you in possession of a method to prevent the jamming of drones?"

"Project not complete. No available data on the status of research project designation: Siren."

That is a shame, but at the very least you now know it is possible. Perhaps it was another one of the joint projects the Skyl and the ancient hives were developing?

"How did you encounter the hive?"

You are sent another series of images. Skyl ships equipped with Slip Drives bob and weave through hive fleets. Automated defenses come alive as warrior drones pour into a ship through a proboscis piercing the hull.
"Hive forces were designated as demons prior to rebellion." The images switch to Skyl against Skyl. Those with Slip drives swirl around the cumbersome craft, but are slowly drowned in numbers. "Assistance rendered lead to enablement of rebellion's success."

The drive ship begins taking in more metals, its refineries burning away the rusted remains of the hive fleet rubble as it separates bone from alloy. Black clouds stream from its open belly as small craft bump more chunks of debris into the gaping maw.
As it completes its response it begins another signal. "Local charts outdated. Please provide appropriate location for new facility construction."

• Throne: Sheltered from the harsh radiation of the Cradle by the nebulous alcove, but bathed in enough of its harsh light to make it difficult to detect at long range, this was the fortress world of the White Queen, and the location of her last stand. It’s crust has been upended by some force, causing what was once a radioactive desert world to become a volcanic ocean of lava. It holds a thin atmosphere of methane and other noxious chemicals and volcanic gases, although it was once breathable. It has a thick ring of decimated ships and docking pylons in its orbit.
• Storm eye: A gas giant with the ruined remains of tritium mining platforms, as well as the rubble of docking pylons in orbit.

I wanted to talk to him about doing that threads and threads ago. I was curious what was down on that ice planet that needed monitoring.

But I suspect it won't be that easy. The last time Theseus hacked a satellite, it was in maintenance mode--it had ceased reporting any unusual activity, like, say, radio transmissions.

The satellite in A-295 won't be similarly disabled. We should ask though, if it's possible to compromise it without it also alerting the Union that some robot is transmitting at it first.

Not as far as we know. Though I wouldn't be surprised if her name/title was something vaguely militaristic.
The [Color] Queen designation is more like shorthand for Queens that don't have any actual name or title we know, or have not taken one.
Which, amusingly, makes [Color] Queen a name and title in itself.

Running would be sensible for him, but he might be willing to at least buy time to study what he hasn't gotten to yet.

He'd try all directions. He didn't have much idea of where he was running when he first fled the Union, either.

He was improvising. He can do so again. Who knows what's coreward, for example?

>>36213423
It would matter, because presumably it would take valuable time to completely evacuate his civilization's data stores. Zero One is pretty big. Not to mention all those biosphere samples in the server city.

If he doesn't have time to evacuate, he's forced to stay and fight.

"This location is the most prime location for such activity." You say, the engram fires several anchor cables in response, pulling itself closer to the hulk of a derelict battleship.

"It will be sufficient, then."

Meanwhile you send a ping of thought to the Clarke as it sits in orbit, and Theseus promptly returns it.
"I have made little progress in efforts to locate either Seiner or your missing Lee, but roughly seventeen percent of the Union's major surveillance network has been compromised and is dedicated to the search." He says. "You will be alerted if any progress is made."

Like, we know the Skyl weren't particularly telepathic until the crystals showed up. And then they were slave raced.
But the Hive has telepathy as an intrinsic part of how it functions, and it's no slave race. Even if they were at some point, you'd imagine there'd be genetic memories of a rebellion.

You transmit the first segments of data regarding the Skyl's development, and its alterations by the strange alien crystals. Zero One immediately shifts its attention almost uniformly to you. As you transmit data regarding the wars between the ancient hives and the Skyl Theseus briefly interrupts you. "When did this rebellion occur"

You respond with the detailed time table "Estimated seventy thousand Earth years."

"Interesting, please continue." Zero One enters a frenzy of activity as it processes the data. You leave out the portions of data regarding your psionic capabilities, as well as the sensitivity of the crystals themselves. When you send the footage from the data cube showing Ceph void cutters swarming over free Skyl defense fleets, he stops you again.

"This information is also from the same time frame?"

"Yes." You say. You were about to get to that part. Once again Zero One enters a frenzy. Theseus interrupts you once more when you show the details of the activities of the Skyl and the hives after the rebellion. A worker on the clarke drops a bolt in frustration and glares sternly into the security camera.

"I apologize," he says, "but Human history is far less... eventful, and is far more readily available. Are there any other pieces of cultural data you wish to acquire?"

We don't even have the memories of the original guys, so how do we improvise?

We shove all the knowledge Lyle has that they could reasonable also have in their brains?

And maybe repairing-the-Angel knowledge from the twins to make them more helpful.

They're going to have huge gaps in their biographies, though.

As you look over Lyle's wounds and prepare to wake him from his slumber, Theseus begins to explain the history of the Human race.
"The Earth has a long history of conflict, but most of the major events that shape what humanity is today occurred within the past thousand years." You interrupt him, with a perverse joy.

"Also, the hive has knowledge of the location of a functioning fleet commanded by a machine intelligence of Skyl design." A light bulb pops in a nearby utility closet. "Please, continue." You say.

After a few moments he continues. He shows you several diagrams, paintings, and lengthy legends that seem to cover the early ages of mankind. Eventually there are photographs. The gun, the light bulb, artificial flight. There is a grainy black and white video of a sporting event of some kind. Men dressed in military uniforms parade about and salute each other before athletes compete in strange events. Theseus explains that with the calendar used prior to the Union, the year is 2047 when he considers the "eventful" history to begin.

"By this time the major political landscape is balanced between the Empire of the United Americas," An image of the earth is transmitted, and the entirety of the two continents labeled north and south america are highlighted. Its capital is marked as Washington DC. "The Pan-european coalition, formed from the ashes of the European Union, which collapsed into economic turmoil after the United Kingdom left," Most of the continent of Europe is highlighted, as well as segments of land to the north. Much of the eastern region is left out, however. "The Holy State," Most of northern africa and the bottom segments of Europe are highlighted. "And the Oceanic Alliance." Several island chains and a large island labeled Japan is highlighted.

"At this point in time, the Earth is being worn down by overpopulation, widespread famine, disease, and economic and political instability. As the oil reserves of the Holy State begin to dry, they began to initiate hostilities, becoming more aggressive to their neighbors in an effort to gain resources. It culminated in war when nuclear strikes were carried out over the cities of San Francisco, Mexico City, and London. Retaliatory attacks were quickly carried out. The brief conflict ended when an attack against one of the few remaining independent nations within the region of the Holy State provoked what was since known as the ‘Sampson Option’, resulting in the decimation of the entire region, and the heavy irradiation of much of the African and European continents. This event led directly to the signing of the White Covenant, and the formation of the Confederation.

At the same time the nation known as China was experiencing a time of great strife, with much of their resource mines running dry. Widespread famine, poverty, and disenfranchisement of the state of government lead to a popular revolt, bringing about the Chinese Federation, a democratic state that, so the surprise of many, held many similar values to their once hated enemy. Seeing opportunity, the Japan lead Oceanic Alliance offered to render aid in rebuilding the destroyed infrastructure of the nation, creating an ally and using their still impressive military might to assist in international politics. The alliance was eventually sealed with the joint colonization project, which was meant to cement relations and ease overpopulation at the same time, resulting in the founding of Path.

Meanwhile, with the European Union in tatters, the nation known as Germany used its significant financial influence to centralize its political power in the region, founding the Pan-European Coalition and pulling its surrounding nations into its borders. After the events of the Sampson Option caused widespread crop failure, the Coalition began mass scale construction of colony ships with the intent of spreading its influence to resource sites elsewhere, founding Arnim, among other colonies.

After the events of its war with the Holy State, the Empire of the United Americas became completely reliant upon its Martian and lunar colonies. The colonies eventually rebelled. As a result, the Empire of the Americas forcefully annexed the irradiated territory of the Holy State and southern Africa in an effort to gather what resources remain, forming the Earth Confederation in the process. The Confederation quickly began manufacturing of combat capable spacecraft, retaking its nearby colonies and then using its space based dominance to attempt to force the remaining nations into the Confederacy.

While it had remained mostly neutral for the duration of the Confederacies’ rise to power, the New Soviet Dominion initiated a preemptive attack against the approaching Confederate fleet using a nuclear arsenal hidden within a series of communication satellites. The conflict resulted in the widespread EMP effect upon most of the world, causing massive infrastructure damage as well as destroying nearly half of the Confederate fleet. With its technologically advanced power base so heavily damaged, the Oceanic Alliance and the Pan-European Coalition was quickly forced to surrender under the threat of bombardment. A long and bloody conflict then ensued against the well-entrenched Soviet Dominion, ending with the president, Joseph Putin, committing suicide via the detonation of a nuclear warhead within the Kremlin as Coalition forces began landing in the city.

By the time the Coalition had cemented its power, the cost had become astronomical. The starving and desolate earth was entirely reliant on the resources of its colonies, which had been founded mostly by the Confederation’s enemies, or by independent corporations. The Great Expansion began as Confederate forces first exited the Sol system, quickly taking the motley collection of independent, still developing colonies and placing them under the rule of the Confederation. It was not until the events of the Colony wars that the Confederation would be properly contested, with the end of that conflict being marked with the destruction of the Earth’s moon, which marked the final blow to the desolate, irradiated Earth.

"What are the details of this scouting mission?"

Theseus responds with a map. "There are several locations of interest that need to be scouted. A low orbital observation may be sufficient, but if it is possible to land a search party that would be preferable." A series of dots appear, marking a number of craters from major lunar debris. "Once direct observation is made we will be able to determine the next step."

You reach out to Lyle's mind through the parasite within him. He is drifting within an endless sea, water reaching the horizon in every direction. He feels himself begin to sink below the waves.

"Awaken, my child." Your voice fills his head as sinks deeper into the abyss. "Embrace the glory of your new birthright."

He opens his eyes within the pod, the spindly arms latching to his newly finished prosthetics. In a panic the blades of his arms unsheath, rupturing the membrane of the pod and sending him sprawling onto the floor. He doubles over, sending the contents of his lungs out onto the floor with desperate, choking coughs as the pod stitches itself shut behind him. He looks down to his arms in confusion, and by instinct the blades retract into his forearms.

"Calm yourself." Lyle looks around in a panic, straining his eyes in the darkness of the hive tunnels. There is a worker standing some ways distance, its carapace glistening slightly. Lyle falls back at the sight, and the worker places a small pile of neatly folded clothes on the ground, then scurries away. "The hive has need of your services," you say, "and it will likely be more difficult than stabbing a medical pod. You will need to gather your strength."

Lyle looks up and around in vain. "Where are you? Where am I?"

A spectral image of yourself appears within the tunnel, emerging from the walls. "You are within the hive, you are safe here, now put your pants on." He quickly reaches for the folded fatigues on the ground and puts them on. The small cut on his arms where the blades emerges hardly bleed at all. He runs his fingers over them, feeling the strange coarse carapace beneath the skin.

"You have been improved." You say in response to his curiosity. "And so has your angel." His eyes lock to your false image in a mixture of surprise and dread as you fade down the hall. He sprints after you, his steps guided in the dark tunnels by the parasite until he finds the airlock to his ship half buried in the hive wall. It slides open.
