Voiced Intro(Kudos to Voiceanon and Sonlee for this): http://vocaroo.com/i/s1Grk05b6F0v

Your name is Michael Dunkin, and you now work for the Inquisition. Previously you were a sergeant in the 291st Cadian Shock Troopers, but now you find yourself in the company of Inquisitor Christina Massey of the Ordos Xenos. After saving her life at the cost of your men and your life (the old one, at least), you've been officially proclaimed a dead hero and recruited into her retinue. Now, with your new life and future in her hands, you're tasked with looking after Christina's well being. And whatever else that entails.

After finding yourself unconscious from a shock maul to the back, you wake to find yourself among questionable friends. Meeting with Major Bishop, you gain a bit of trust with the man while also learning of a hideout. After leaving, an attempted robbery takes an unexpected turn as you end up bringing the man, an ex-guardsman down on his luck, back to the ship with you. Finally, after being all but told of an attempt on the Lord General's life, you play the waiting game as the date approaches.

Entering the hangar bay, you find in it two familiar faces among the typical maintenance crew. You approach them casually, but one of them still greets you with a stiff salute.

“Lieutenant,” Jonah says.

“Corporal,” You answer, returning the gesture. “At ease. Do we have an ETA?”

“Five minutes out,” Roxy says, looking over a dataslate. “Nice of you to join us, LT.”

“Christina couldn’t attend, so she sent me instead,” You shrug. “Are we ready?”

While it had all but slipped your mind, earlier today you were notified by Jeeves that the recruits you had helped Roxy select had finally arrived. With Alpha previously down to just three members, this was welcomed news.

“Of course,” Roxy scoffs. “We’ve rolled out the welcome mat and everything.”

“As the Sergeant says,” Jonah adds mildly. “Everything is in place.”

“Any words of wisdom to pass on before they arrive?” Roxy jokes, though you know her well enough to see it as an honest question.

>”They’re newcomers, but they’re part of your team now. Welcome them as such.”
>”This is your show, Sergeant. Act on your gut and it won’t steer you wrong.”
>”This isn’t going to be some glory tour for them. Let them know how things work.”

"This isn't going to be a glory tour for them," You say. "Let them know how things work."

Both of them nod in agreement, and shortly after a shuttle arrives. It sets down and lowers the ramp, and down it comes a trio of men in various degrees of dress. Two of them wear battered and worn flak armor of different makes and colors, while the third is in a clean and crisp blue dress uniform.

"Ten-HUT!" The man in blue shouts, snapping to attention. The other two follow close behind, though without as much gusto.

Roxy looks to you, but you only offer a slight inclination of the head towards them. Flanking her left while Jonah takes her right, you let her take the reigns.

"At ease," She says. "Name, rank, and specialty."

"Markus Xanvau, Sergeant, Heavy Weapons," The man in Mordian blue answers. He was a man fit for the job, similar to Gabriel in size, though lean where the other man was stocky. Under his cap was a dark crew cut, and amber eyes shined with enthusiasm.

"Wyack Stanson, Corporal, Close Quarters Combat," The Elysian says. He was a man unlucky in war; half his face replaced with cybernetics, with plenty other scars in plain view. All this, without a hair on his head and one grey eye, leaves you unsure if you like his smile.

"Casus Alarin, Corporal, Demolition," The Scintillan replies. He seems the opposite of Markus, his gear looking as if he'd just returned from a firefight. A messy dark head of hair and impressive facial hair seals the impression of a man not fond of parade duty.

At the last man's words Roxy nods, looking over each one in turn. Placing a hand on her hip, a wry smile forms on her lips.

(Cont.)

>>36183452

"I've looked over each of your files and I admit I'm impressed. Damn good soldiers, all of you. But if you think this means you're gonna be a hero you’ve signed up for the wrong job. With our line of work, you stop officially existing the second you step off the shuttle.”

Markus and Casus take the news blankly, but you notice a slight raise of the brow from Wyack.

“The man to my right is Corporal Jonah Bedard. If you’re not taking orders from me or the Inquisitor herself, you’ll get’em from him.”

Jonah’s only reply is to give a brief nod, seemingly dissecting each man with his eyes.

“The man to my left is Lieutenant Michael Dunkin. If we’re not working directly with the Inquisitor we’ll probably be with him.”

The men look from Jonah to you.

"Any questions?" Roxy asks, to resounding silence.

"I do," You say, to everyone's surprise. "Let's see if seven can take the Gauntlet better than two."

The newcomers have no idea what that means, but Roxy and Jonah's response are mixed. They look at one another.

"Test them while they're fresh," Jonah suggested.

"Hmmm," Roxy mutters, rubbing her chin. "Fair enough. Alpha's gotten lazy."

"You mean Jami," Jonah deadpans, receiving only an amused smile from the Sergeant.

"Alright," Roxy announces, turning back to the recruits. "On this ship we have a course known as the Gauntlet. It's meant to be run with a squad of ten and the victors are forever remembered as the Emperor's finest. We're going to do it with seven. Objections?"

All the men seem to be on-board. With that, you all set off towards the training floor.

Okay, so as it seems the main consensus is to join, but torn between helping or hindering. So the current choices are...

>Run the Gauntlet with Alpha
>Join the volunteers to stop them.

>Let Vincent join Alpha
>Let Vincent join the volunteers.

A quick voxcall later and Vincent is there to meet you with a crowd. To your chagrin he holds a familiar looking longlas.

"Mike!" Vincent grins, looking over the new recruits. "Glad to see Alpha's starting to fill out again."

"We thought of throwing them in head-first," You shrug. "See if six can get farther than two."

Looking surprised, Vincent does a quick headcount.

"Where are you in all this?" He asks, his grin widening.

"Right next to you," You say. "This is Alpha's time to shine. Or not."

"Now you're starting to see it my way," Vincent chuckled. "Right this way."

While Gabriel was now sporting a pair of legs similar to your one, it would still be some time until he was used to them enough to be combat ready again. So when the lift reaches the bottom floor off steps Roxy, Jami, Jonah, and the new recruits. They're all loaded and ready to go, at least looking like an impressive band.

Hefting your own longlas, you take one side of the Gauntlet while Vincent takes the other. While there's three dozen other men with you, they make way for the two of you.

"Ten thrones says I get at least half of them myself," Vincent calls.

"I'll take that bet," You chuckle, liking this view of the Gauntlet much better as you switch frequencies. "Your boys ready, Rox?"

"Let's kick the tires and light the fires," She answers.

With a line of rifles on either side, a familiar klaxon blares as the gate drops and Alpha rushes into play.

Alpha lets out the gate with a good start, moving fast and covering each other as they went. Shockingly, six men are able to take on the first obstacle a lot easier than just two.

While most of Alpha takes on the volunteers on the ground floor with them, Jonah sends several of the ones with you down with a few well placed shots with his own longlas. A few close calls happens to you, but you've begun to keep an eye on him as you went.

Alpha makes it through the first stretch without a casualty, but you and the other volunteers are already on the move as they begin to scale the wall.

This time things go much better for you. Climbing upwards, Alpha is forced to send up half their number while the rest remain on the ground and cover them.

Being the largest and most brightly dressed of the squad, you pick out Markus from the crowd and fire.

The shot strikes through, and for a moment he manages to keep one hand gripped in place, but another shot sends him down. Scrambling for his belt, he narrowly hits the mini-grav chute to cushion his fall, still landing with a heavy thud.

"Scratch one," You radio.

"Yeah, yeah," Vincent answers.

With two men on top, they trade jobs and begin keeping you and Vincent busy while the others ascend.

The Commander himself manages to down Jami, sending him flailing out into the open air. However despite your expectations, he remains calm and actually managed to land on his feet with some tricky use of the grave chute.

Then a shot from above hits him again and he tumbles over.

"Scratch two," Vincent adds.

With that, the remaining four members of Alpha reach a familiar point, with an even more familiar plan unfolding before you as Wayack and Casas go for the shield rack while Jonah and Roxy form up behind them.

"Heads up," You vox. "They're gonna stack up."

True to your words, they form a small shield wall that their sharpshooters hide behind. Soon a small but steady drop in numbers begins to occur as Jonah and Roxy go to work.

They finally decide the rate of fire has diminished enough to let them advance. As they do so you rise up-

-and immediately regret the decision as you're hit by a freight train.

One moment you're upright and firing. The next you're on the ground, head suddenly splitting and the ceiling spinning. An armsman kneels over you and you can distantly hear him ask if you're alright. You wave him off and lay there a moment before you try leaning up.

"Mike!" Vincent's voice comes over the vox. "You alright over there? It's getting thin out here!"

"I'm down," You answer back with a groan, rubbing the back of your helmet. "Down real hard."

Swearing, Vincent cuts the line as the sounds of battle rage on. Hesitantly, you get to your feet with the help of another 'dead' armsman.

"First time getting popped?" He asks.

"Sadly, no," You chuckle. "I seem to have an attraction to stun weaponry."

Keeping out of the line of fire, you exit the pillbox to join the crowd gathered on the sidelines, watching it continue to unfold.

It's a tough battle, with only Vincent and his elite left to stand against the remaining three Alpha members.

By then the crowd had nearly tripled in size, with even Melodi appearing to inspect the chaos.

"What the..." She starts, then shakes her head. "Nevermind. I'm just gonna watch this play out."

"Smart," You nod.

In the end the Gauntlet continues to stand unconquered, Roxy and her squad almost making it to the very end before faltering. It's met with mixed feelings, but when Alpha returns to the main floor battered and bruised they're met with cheering and applause.

"Apologies, Lieutenant," Jonah says. "I hope you're alright."

"I'll live," You say, offering your hand that the man takes. "Nice work out there."

"Thank you."

For her part, Roxy seems to take the results with grace. However, when she sees you again, she grins.

"I heard you got knocked the fuck out."

"I heard you tripped."

Scowling, she slugs you in the shoulder. You only laugh, nodding approvingly.

"You did good out there," You say. "You do your people proud."

Not expecting such an honest compliment, Roxy looks around, fighting back a faint red hue creeping into her cheeks.

"We didn't win," She says, looking back at you. "But we did alright. Better than you, at least."

"Excuse me, but in our try I technically made it farther than you."

"'Technically' he says! A spoilsport, I say..."

You spend the remainder of the evening with Alpha and Vincent getting to know the former's newest members, gloating over the earlier run, and doing what soldiers with downtime do.

Later that night, you're summoned to the Inquisitor's office. Having nothing better to do, you decide to check in early to be studious. However, once you arrive, you hear murmured voices from within. You take a step back, looking down either ends of the hall before shrugging. You suppose you can wait.

You recognize the voice of Christina and her savant, Leo. While you two have rarely spoken, you still recognize his way of speaking, similar to that of Jeeves.

"...sometimes unavoidable, Christina. You can't just prepare Exterminatus every time this happens."

"So... what? I just smile, laugh, and act like I don't care?"

"That's not what I meant and you know it..."

"I don't just do this because I want to torture myself, Leo. You know that. I just... can't. I won't allow it."

"I remember long ago, back when I still had a single hair on my head, a certain young woman who said the same exact thing. Do you know what she did next?"

There's an extended silence.

"Thank you, Leo. That will be all."

"As you say, my lady."

You quickly back away, attempting to look casual. The door opens and the aging Savant waddles into view. When he sees you he smiles, dipping his head ever so slightly.

"Ah, Lieutenant," He says, smiling. "So good to see you again. How are you?"

"I'm doing well," You answer. "How are you?"

"I am doing just fine," Leo cheerfully replies. "Now if you excuse me, I have some files to read... as soon as I find them..."

As he makes he way down the hall you catch the door before it closes, finding Christina sitting at her desk, head in her hands. Hesitantly, you rasp your knuckles against the side of the door. Immediately her head shoots up, looking at you with surprise.

"Lieutenant," She says. "I wasn't expecting you yet."

"Bad time?" You ask, trying to sound joking.

"No, no," She signals you forward. "In truth, I'm happy to see you routinely punctual."

Taking a seat, you lean back and let her start.

"I heard about Alpha's little trial run today," She says, smirking. "And a little Lieutenant getting injured. Again.”

“Guilty as charged on both accounts,” You chuckle. “It went well, though. I think this new Alpha’s gonna do well.”

“Just what I wanted to hear,” She says, steepling her hands. “I’ve got a job for you. I’m not quite sure if you’re ready for it yet but I have no choice.”

You straighten, surprised at her tone.

“Ma’am?” You ask. “Whatever it is, I’m your man. What’s the job?”

“Bodyguarding.”

You stare in confusion a few moment until you notice her smirk, then allow yourself a brief laugh with her.

“Who am I guarding?” You ask.

“General Maynard Barrera. Part of Gagne’s cabinet, and friend of Inquisitor Straunum. So the Inquisitor says. You’ll take the part of his personal bodyguard before, during, and after the parade. He’ll be near the Lord General at almost all times, so if something is to happen I’ll have people able to handle things immediately.”

“Sounds simple enough.”

“If we’re lucky it will be. You’ll be there in the case that it isn’t. Any questions?”

"I plan on you being in full Guard carapace, so anyone seeing your face isn't a problem. If you want, speak with Melodi about tinkering with the helmet's external caster. Not required, but not a bad addition either."

"Fair enough," You nod. "What's his route going to look like?"

"I'll get you plans soon, but it's going to be fairly basic," She explains. "Greet the General at the garrison he's staying at, escort him to the parade, look pretty for the crowds, and escort him back. You can see things in more detail later."

"How many of us are there going to be?"

"From us? Seven, including you. You and Alpha will be with him at all times, along with a handful of his own officers. Besides them and you, there's going to be a literal army out on display. Not to mention the local Arbites."

"So for things like snipers, air support..."

"Covered. If it's needed, and I hope it won't be. I don't want so many operatives out in the field as to be obvious, so we're making ourselves scarce on this one. Should danger arise, rely on local support and keep an eye on Gagne. And Barrera, if you can."

"Understood," You nod. "One final question."

"Go on."

"Have you been eating and sleeping properly?"

Her expression drops and she stares at you warily.

"Yes," She sighs. "Mainly to avoid you barging in at random intervals with food."

"Is it that bad?" You ask, feigning hurt.

"That's... not that I meant," She rubs her temples. "Rumor mills are bad enough on this ship. No need to be adding fuel to the fires."

It takes you a few moments to understand.

"Oh."

"Indeed. So, if you please," She waves you away. "Goodnight, Lieutenant."

"What do you mean?" Christina asks.

"Just... you remember what I told you, right? I'm here to talk, same as you."

She hesitates, fixing you with a clouded look. She seems about to say something, then falters and smiles.

"I'm alright, Lieutenant," She says. "Goodnight."

"Goodnight, ma'am," You say, though you're not convinced.

With that done you head back to your room for the night.

The next few days are done preparing for the parade, running through a few more basic drills with Alpha to cement their already good cohesion. You and Roxy both feel confident in them. Before long the day arrives and you begin making final preparations. As the plan is to go, you and Alpha are kitted with standard olive Guard carapace, with Sergeant stripes on your shoulder with Roxy now being a Corporal.

"That's just speaking to people around you," Melodi goes onto explain. "For the squad-only frequency, you sound like the beautiful little doves you are."

Still working with his helmet, Burk casts a curious brow at you. In response, you merely shrug.

Once ready, your squad takes a shuttle planetside. You land inside an Imperial Guard base, specifically on a stretch of airstrip bustling with activity. Flyers of all types prepare, some for air shows, others for possible combat. Ground vehicles rumble about, hurrying men and supplies about.

In all honesty, it’s a welcoming sight.

You’re lead into the main building, where the foot traffic is just as heavy. However, a squad of heavily armed soldiers makes room and you’re lead to the upper floors. There, you’re pointed to a lounge where a man in the decorated garb of a General sits with similarly dressed men.

He notices you as soon as you approach, you and your men snapping to attention.

“Ah, yes,” General Barrera says, lurching to his feet. He’s not exactly a tall or physically impressive man, but he carries an air of confidence about him. “I was wondering when you’d get here.”

You try not to glance at the name stenciled onto your chestplate.

“Sergeant Calhoun, reporting for escort duty, sir,” You say.

“At ease, all of you,” Barrera says, returning the gesture in a halfhearted manner. “Don’t you know? Today’s a time for celebration. Be cheerful.”

>”Transport’s waiting this way, sir.”

"I'll keep that in mind, General," You say. "Transport's this way."

"Lead on, Sergeant."

Outside the command center, a small convoy waits for you and the General. In the center is a Chimera, heavily modified and sporting the colors of what you guess is the General's personal unit.

Climbing inside, you find it much quieter and comfortable than that meant for the average trooper.

"Some people trade safety for luxury," Barrera says, catching your staring. "I prefer both."

With a rumble the Chimera starts forward. You absently flip through the vox channels until you notice the General's continued staring.

"General?" You ask.

Leaning forward, he signals for you to do the same. Complying, he gives you a wry smile.

"Come now, Sergeant," He says quietly. "Just between the two of us. Soldier to soldier. Who sent you here?"

>"Classified."

"Someone inclined to keep you alive, no doubt," You answer.

"A fair assumption," He chuckles. "I suppose I should count myself lucky to have friends like these. As unseen as they are."

Leaning back, the remainder of the trip goes by in silence, you inspecting the vox channels and the General using his personal dataslate. He attempts conversation with you and your team, but they're smart enough to keep their answers limited.

Before long the Chimera grinds to a halt and the rear hatch opens. Piling out, you find yourself standing with a force on the brink of a major assault.

Or in this case, a parade.

More armor and soldiers than you can count are gathered down either ways of a massive highway, dipping and raising at random intervals. Already, groups of civilians watch the preparations from afar in vehicles or on crosswalks running parallel or near it.

Near the center of the mass is a Baneblade, having had a stage built on it fit for a small crowd. Already, the makings of one are there, made up of various high ranking officers.

"Best get to it," Barrera sighs. "Have you done this sort of thing before, Sergeant?"

"Once or twice," You answer as you walk. "Didn't like it much."

"Why not?"

You think about it, not wanting to say anything too out of line.

"If I wanted to be dressed up and put on display, I'd have joined the Navy. If you're going to use Guard, use them right."

To your surprise the General laughs, looking at you with amusement.

"Spoken like a true guardsman," he says.

With your squad in tow, you wade through the crowd.

You continue forward...

And see something you really wish you hadn't.

Off to the right of the Baneblade, plastered on the side of a Leman Russ, is an insignia. A golden eagle, wings spread with a skull in its talons. You'd know it anywhere.

It's yours.

Around the tank, and sitting on it, are a number of Cadian Shock Troopers talking with the crew and other guardsmen. You avert your eyes, not so much if they recognize you as the other way around. Now's not the time for that.

Reaching the base of the Baneblade, you take a temporary lift attached to it with your squad. You order the majority of them to spread out across the machine with the other groups of elites, with Roxy and Burk keeping with you to the main stage. There, you find the man you've been working to protect.

You'd seen Arthur Gagne once or twice before on pictcasters, but this was different. A man on his years but still as fit as the guards around him, he's barrel chested with but a few grey wisps of grey hair left on his head. On his chest were dozens of various medals from various campaigns and metals.

"Lord General," Barrera greets.

"Maynard!" Arthur grins, turning from his men and approaching the younger man. He takes Barrera's offered hand with both of his and shakes heartily. "Glad you could join us."

"Of course, sir," Barrera replies. "How do you feel?"

"Like I've already got a dozen crosshairs on me," He answers, still grinning. "Damn, but it's a good feeling."

With that they pull away to the side to speak with the others, leaving the three of you with the other various guards. Those already there eye you warily, though they offer no comment as they watch over the crowds below.

Beside you, an elbow nudges your side.

"LT," Roxy whispers over a private channel. "Off to the right. Weren't those...?"

>"Unimportant to the mission."
>"They were."

Wasn't our unit mostly wiped out by nids? Our brother was a member and was survived, last we heard he was ordered to this planet for something. We're supposed to be dead, don't want any awkward reunions and explanations.

>>36191282

"They were," You say, and leave it at that. You don't mean to sound as forceful as you do, but Roxy refrains from further comment.

As a squadron of Valkyrie's soar overhead the parade seems to finally get underway. Soldiers form ranks and tanks rumble into position. Bands begin playing and the gathered masses continue to swell to cheer on the march.

A few on stage stumble as the Baneblade starts forward, not being used to hitching rides on armor, but most hardly flinch.

As per your orders, you stand tall and presentable in your armor, letting the officers do the waving and crowd pleasing. You're just here to shoot things if needed. On the bright side, you get an interesting view of the city, noting the blocked off sky traffic.

I leave it up to you guys.)

Everything is fine.

Not just that. Everything is great.

The sun is shining, the faithful citizens of the Imperium are out in droves, and the might of the Guard is on display for all to see. However, you remain on constant vigilance.

You question the usage of resources and manpower with this stunt, but you admit it seems to have its uses. The civilian onlookers actually seem happy to see their soldiers out in dress uniform, and a few of the guardsmen pause long enough to accept a small token from someone.

Over an hour and a half passes without any major incident. There are a few squabbles, but nothing the Arbites don’t quietly and quickly put down.

As you near the end of the parade the crowds begin to thicken as they converge, being allowed brief moments with the soldiers to ask about the wonderful life of serving in the Imperial Guard. However, Barrera excuses himself from the Lord General and heads for the lift. Voxing your people, you all meet back up and begin downwards once more.

“My head began to ache as soon as those blasted drums started,” He complains lightly.

Reaching the ground, you step off and pause. Similar in position from before, you spot the same Leman Russ as before parked a short ways away, hidden among its brethren.

Your stomach sinks with each step you take. What do you say? What do you do? Christina will have your head if you go speaking to the people who think you're dead, but for the moment you're someone else. Sound like someone else, at least.

You find them much like you had before, the soldiers resting their legs and the tank crew stretching theirs. The crowds are just now arriving, so for now there's no one else bothering them.

"Excuse me," You call, and several of them turn to face you. "Is this the 291st?"

The men remain silent at first, exchanging wary glances.

"What's left of it," One answers. "Why?"

"I heard about what happened. On Tadira. I'm sorry."

"You got nothing to be sorry about," A crewman says, Lho stick sticking from their teeth. "What do you need?"

"I was wondering if one of you had made it out alive. Michael Dunkin. Do you know him?"

At the name all those that had previously been ignoring you turn to look at who mentioned it. Your stomach sinks further.

“How do you know the Lieutenant?” The crewman asks cautiously.

“We met once, on leave at Fraxia. I promised him a round if we met again.”

At that their faces darken, though not at you. Some turn away, while others look at you in sympathy.

“He’s dead,” the Crewman sighs. “Been dead since Tadira. Went down a hero atop a heap of ‘Nids, if the rumors are true. I’ll have a word with the man that says otherwise.”

“What happened?” You ask.

“He did what he was ordered to do,” he chuckles quietly. “He held the line. Died fighting to let civilians take the place of him and his company off the planet.”

“Sounds like a tough son of a bitch,” You note.

“He was.”

(Cont.)
>>
>>36193226

“What about his brother? Daniel Dunkin? He told he me was Kasrkin.”

“That I couldn’t tell you,” He shrugs, leaning against his tank. “In a regiment with mostly infantry, the tanker’s always the last to know. As far as I know he made it out, but Throne knows where he is now. I hope he knows what his brother did, at least.”

Swallowing hard, you nod in understanding.

"And so do we," The man answers, surprised you know the phrase.

However, before he can question it, you take that moment to part ways. You leave with mixed feelings, stowing said feelings away until they can be dealt with later. Or forgotten about.

When you arrive the convoy is ready to go, and after a brief apology to the General you pile in and prepare to leave.

"Well...shit. What do we do?"

"Get ready for trouble."

With that you switch to your line to Christina.

"Ma'am? We got problems."

"Yes?" Christina asks, voice pensive.

"We're currently hitching a ride with a Sympathizer at the wheel. If you don't hear from me in a minute, start to worry."

"I'm already alerting our people."

Unbuckling yourself, you make your way up to the drivers seat. You can't tell beneath the armor, but you know that voice.

"Where's the other driver?" You ask.

"At your mothers house," Markus replies dryly. "How should I know? He drove you up here, I drive you back. That's my orders."

You look back to answer him.

The world devolves into Chaos as you go flying. However, a combination of experience with crashing APC's and heavy armor keeps you from suffering any serious wounds.

Scrambling to your feet, you find your squad and the General struggling to get free. Markus is attempting to do the same, though currently you're the only one right-side up.

As the others pop the hatch behind you, you hear the telltale sounds of a firefight outside. Seconds later, you begin to hear a familiar metallic ping as bullets ricochet off the Chimera's hull.

"You're staying right where you are," You say, keeping your gun firmly in place.

"Idiot!" Markus snarls.

"How's it looking out there?" You vox.

"Just peachy, boss!" Roxy answers through a blast of static. "Could use a hand out here, if you're not too busy!"

Not seeing any obvious in-built vox set in Markus' armor, you rip the one strapped to his chest and stow it in a pouch.

"Stay here," You order, and with the make your wait outside.

Once free of the Chimera, you find a civilian transport truck wedged into it's side. The trucks seems to have suffered the most damage, but it was still enough to put the APC on its side.

Around you, the remainder of the convoy has formed a semi-circle around the wreck, with the General helping in the defense with his bolter pistol.

You rush over to the General, grabbing him by the scruff of his collar and forcing him back as enemy fire zips by. You slam him against the back of an upright Chimera as softly as you can. Which isn't very.

"No offense, sir," You say. "But if you die my ass is grass."

"And you expect me to just sit here and let my men die?" Barrera scowls.

"Just keep your head down," You tell him, and with that take his old position.

Finally, you begin to return fire and see just who it is that's doing the attacking.

The enemy appears to be made up of men in civilian wear wielding military-grade weaponry. They move with the training and discipline of guardsmen, converging on you from all sides.

However, you have armor. Both on your persons and in the form of two other Chimera's and a Leman Russ. Said vehicles blast away at the enemy, keeping them pinned.

"Heads up!" Roxy warns, and above you see shapes on the rooftops. A rocket goes flying and narrowly misses one of the Chimeras. However, before they can fire a second one an ungodly howl fills the air and the rocketman vanishes in a cloud of pink. Seconds later, a trio of familiar looking Valkyries appear overhead. Two of them hover in place, taking down the rooftop assailants, while the third fast ropes down stormtroopers to assist.

Quickly dwindling in number, the insurgents on the ground begin to retreat. However, they’re only a short ways down the street when a squadron of Arbite vehicles appear and open fire, tearing them down in a hail of gunfire as Arbites dismount.

In the next few seconds, a small army of elite troopers and Arbites crowd the street. You don’t know the enemy bodycount, but as you collect your people you find that only two of the General’s men were killed. The General himself is being treated for minor wounds, and when you approach he offers a weary smile.

“I suppose I owe you thanks,” He says.

“Just doing my job, sir,” You say.

"Perhaps, but even a General has room for gratitude."

"Roxy?" You vox.

"Yeah?"

"Our friend's leaving. I'm going after him."

"Want me to follow?"

"No. I'll handle this."

You shadow the man, changing vox frequencies once more.

"Ma'am?"

"Lieutenant," Christina says, the relief in her voice clear. "Are you alright? What happened?"

"Later, ma'am. Our driver's making a quiet escape from the scene. Do I grab him?"

"Are you sure he was part of the attack?"

"I... I can't be certain, but it seems obvious."

"Just because it's obvious doesn't mean it's true, Lieutenant. I leave it up to your judgement. Right now I have to deal with the larger mess."

With that she ends the call and you sigh, hoping she would have made the call for you.

Having left him alone, he could have shot you all, or at least the General, in the back at any time to help the insurgents but didn't. He also saved your life, though at that moment he didn't realize it was you.

However, you know for a fact that he's in line with the Sympathizers. And him being here today was no simple coincidence...

>Try and capture him.

Rolled 10 (1d20)

Check what's going on in the Vox caster he was sporting. Maybe that will give us some more context. At the same time, we should let Marcus get too far ahead.

If we don't get anything at first, a terse "The General is still alive," and nothing more might rouse the beehive.
>>
Rolled 17 (1d20)

>>36196697
Bugger. I meant to say that we shouldn't let him get too far ahead, meaning that we try to tail him for as long as possible. Furthermore, not requesting any help was kind of stupid. We need someone to watch our back as we follow Marcus and check his vox channels. Get someone to tail us and watch our backs ASAP. We can't do everything ourselves.

You pause and watch him go, grabbing the vox you'd taken from him and listening in. Actually having it out, the chatter is heavy.

"-yes on Darius, repeat, eyes on Darius. Package secure and en-route to safehouse."

"Confirmed. Santra 1-1, troopers dismounted and following the remaining insurgents into the sewers. Dirty bastards can die down there."

"Any word from Markus, 1-1?"

"Negative. Possible KIA. Too many people down there to tell."

"Mother-...alright. Keep an eye out for him. Valhallan bastard can't go down that easy..."

You pause, knowing official Guard coms when you hear it. However, it confuses you further. Was he being truthful? Or are these other Sympathizers within the ranks?

Though conflicted, you decide to...

"Rox?" You call.

"You've been captured, haven't you?" She answers.

"Not yet. Can you spare a man as back-up?"

"Right behind you," Despite it being broad daylight, Jonah appears at your side seemingly from nowhere. Not wasting time, you give Roxy the basic rundown of what's happened.

"I expect you both to make it back," Roxy says.

"Promise," You reply.

With that, you and Jonah start back after the man. Jonah moves like a cat, so you allow him to take the lead as you watch his back.

Despite you best attempts, Markus appears a difficult prey to stalk. Even with Jonah on his heels, you both lose him a few blocks away from the site of the battle.

Jonah appears to be more than displeased at his failure, but he thank him all the same.

With the General safe and the insurgents sent packing, you're soon picked up and brought back to the Antebellum, where you begin to think up a debriefing in your head for the Inquisitor. However, with all that happened, you've a lot to think about.

Alright, so I agree that the Dice Gods have decided to take a real piss on you guys. I'm willing to work with a Fate Point system, but I'm not too sure how to work it. You guys tossed around names that used systems like it. What did they entail?

Ya got points, sometimes shit like vys(soma) and just flat out fate shit, I know crusty does karma points, and you spend them when the dice gods fucked you in the ass, either to improve a roll or to use a roll that was out of the first three but wasn't dog shit.
>>
>>36197605
>You guys tossed around names that used systems like it. What did they entail?
In Merc's CyberIdols, whenever a 20 is rolled in the first three, it can be banked as a Star Power point (a fate point) or it can be used as a regular nat 20 roll, when a 1 is rolled, players vote on whether to use a star power or not to cancel out the 1.

In Assassin School, Lucky Coins serve the same mechanic except they are very powerful, you get them from completing missions or rewards for certain tasks, they supercharge rolls essentially, so if you use one on a nat 1, it becomes a 20, if you use one on a 20 it becomes a 40.

Usually Fate Points are only given as a reward for some difficult task being completed, or as a meta mechanic for rolling dice, though thats unlikely to happen with us.

Yeah Anon, go in paint and write "Sigh..." or what ever action you were going to take, then post it. Otherwise people make fun of you.
>>
>>36197668
problem with the first is that it requires 20's to be rolled to get fate points, which ain't ever going to happen, and the second is kind of overpowered

most of the time the QM/GM gives out a fate point here and there when they think the players have done something to deserve one as a reward
>>
>>36197605
I've seen fate points be handed out for drawfags/writefags doing stuff for the quest. Also for giving really cool or good ideas during the quest.
>>
>>36197605
this anon gotta hit the hay, thanks for the thread OP
>>
>>36197668
Both sound interesting, but as >>36197758 said they're a bit too one way or the other. And with our current running luck, I'm not sure how effective it would be.

Is there really a problem with /tg/'s dice mechanics or are we just stupidly unlucky tonight?

>>36197798
While sounding nice, I'm nowhere near egotistical enough to demand drawfags/writefags do something for me in exchange for better odds. However, when players take a third option and think outside the box, I tend to roll with it, dice be damned.

>>36197852
Glad to have you around. I'll be that way myself soon.

>Is there really a problem with /tg/'s dice mechanics or are we just stupidly unlucky tonight?

>>
>>36197873
It wasn't a demand, just if they did it they got rewarded as a show of thanks. Technically the guy who did the voice over woulda earned 1 point already imo.

Start out with 3 points, then add 1 for the voice over and maybe 1 for your op picture if someone made it for you.
>>
Rolled 13 (1d20)

>>36197873
I think I can offer you a good middle ground. Aspirational's system have Critical failures only when there's at least not one roll over the DC in addition to the Nat-1. So if we pass the DC and get a Nat-1, we still fail, but not totally. If we get two passes and a Nat-1, we're still good. Nat-1 and Nat-20 means normal success.
>>
>>36197921
I think starting with 3 total and earning any more we get from then on for great plans or awesome feats and accomplishments sounds good.
>>
>>36197901
A sign from the Captcha gods. Dunno if it's good or bad. Probably bad.

I'm okay with all of these ideas to some degree, but for now I think I'll test out the Point Reward system. Not so much creations (Which are still nice and able) but creativity in-quest, rewarding players for going beyond just picking from the typical 'what do?' powerpoints.

Not that that's bad, mind you, but it'll hopefully encourage some extended planning and discussion among players. Is it strange I like to see you guys discuss and speculate about things?
>>
>>36198040
No, I think its a QM thing, as I've seen it mentioned before by several. Understandable, discussion shows investment and enjoyment of the story.
>>
>>36198040
Not at all; that's a common vice for DMs - stands to reason QMs would like it too. I had a number of speculations reading the thread, but being late couldn't share 'em as they came. The pink clouds and Chaos after the crash worry me, though.
