A rainbow above, the forest around and the slow, warm fall of rain.
It was a good day to start, but it might be getting even better.

You can't keep the smile off your face as you walk, one friend behind you and a new one bundled in your arms.

You watch as Nin pulls the blanket a little tighter around herself, cozying up to you as best she can.
She's much cuter when she's quiet.

Not that it lasts long.

"So."
"Hmm?"
"Is this a habit of yours?"
"What?"

"Kidnapping innocent girls?"
You snort, mouth twitching into a smirk.
"Do not be ridiculous, yes? If I was kidnapping you, there would be a gag."
"Oh? Spent some time planning it?"

"I have tried coming up with different ways to keep you quiet, yes. I can only imagine what kind of reward the moths would give me."
"You'd have to do something more impressive if you want the crown-"
"I do not want the crown."

You both fall silent a moment, the low hiss of rain accompanying your steps through the woods.

"Lyra?"
"Yes?"
"There is... something I want you to know."
"It is okay, yes."

She shakes her head.
"No, I... I think this is something I have to say."
You nod.

"When they crown you, I will be gloating."

You bundle a second blanket over her head as she giggles, and start up the trunk of your home.

>Go see Mom. She can probably give you some advice about talking to the moths.
>Check that Dad and Sara are in one piece. You kind of ran away and left him with her.
>See about getting some lunch. What do moths eat anyway?

>
>>
>>36182933
To be fair to your players there are some animals that that do eat poisonous thing for the poison.
>>
>>36182655

Nin is going on a training regiment before we leave. I recommend:

> "Wing ups", an exercise where she has to fly straight up as quickly as she can. Weights will be added incrementally to help build her endurance and strength
> "Hide and seek" with Shezka. She stays out of sight or she gets some cardio in trying to outrun Shezka back to base. Either works out well.
> "Stick combat" against either the neighborhood kids or Sara. She needs to work on close quarters combat and the rest of our crew is too strong to not risk hurting her.
> Magic studies with Sara. We don't know if she might have the gift. My money is on her having sound magic, what with the giant mouth. Plus, it's the perfect boon for the future herald of the MIGHTY QUEEN!
>>
>>36183060

That's why I though it was fun, I had one player spend an hour researching just to find the most fabulous moth possible to make his goal.

Gui the fabulous, will one day be a Gay Madagascar sunset moth if the gods permit.
>>
>>36183085
The second and third one are basically useless. She doesn't need much close quarter combat, because she shouldn't get into close quarters with anything. If anything she needs training how to disengage from something like that. And the second is useless because she flies. Sheszka can't catch her because she can't fly.
>>
>>36183085
Good ideas, and I would be tickled pink by her having sound magic. She should also continue her practice with her powders, and maybe learn about foraging: she's a terrible hunter, because plants don't move, but she could stand to learn about plants and stuff.
>>
>>36183085
We could also make her a better weapon, maybe a staff, maybe something else, but something lighter and more durable than a branch for sure.

also:
>Jin helps improve flight.
>Nin goes on light hunts with us to practice using powder in the field.
>>
>>36183118

If her orders for the exercise are "fly low", at least within the tree line, then that leaves Shezka plenty of room to catch her. The exercise is entirely centered around how to effectively disengage and evade or to remain unseen. She needs all of those things.

As for stick fighting, it helps build reaction timing and could help her work her way out of a pinch if and when something happens which we can't account for. She won't be beating down monsters left and right, but she might be able to get a bit more breathing room or an opening to escape if she learns how to dodge and parry effectively.
>>
>>36183158
We've got a collection of staffs and poles we looted from the crappy dungeon. We can see if any of them suit her.
>>
>>36183158
Maybe darts? We use healing powder for making potions, maybe we could do something similar with paralysis or sleeping powder.
>>
>>36183125
Also a good idea.
Traveling to different locations means she will have to learn about the local plant life (what's more or less edible) and where to find it. I don't expect her to have to chew on cactus at some point.
>>
>>36183085
> "Wing ups", an exercise where she has to fly straight up as quickly as she can. Weights will be added incrementally to help build her endurance and strength
This is fatally stupid. when her strength gives up, she falls from great height and dies.

> "Stick combat" against either the neighborhood kids or Sara. She needs to work on close quarters combat and the rest of our crew is too strong to not risk hurting her.
This is just stupid. You don't get better at CQC from stick combat with children. If you want her to get CQC, have mom train her. OR she can take lessons from the moth guardsmen.

> "Hide and seek" with Shezka. She stays out of sight or she gets some cardio in trying to outrun Shezka back to base. Either works out well.
Shezka tracks via smell, not sight.
Shezka is ridiculously fast, it will take literally a second for her to be caught. Unless she just flies out of reach.

> Magic studies
If she has the talent for it. sure

> with Sara
sounds bad for her health
>>
>>36183201
That's a thought. Though also having a concealed knife or something might help in a pinch, just to get away from something that got to close.
>>
>>36183201
Yeah, giving her some lawn darts tipped with her powders could be a good idea.

Likely to have a stronger and faster effect then just sprinkling dust over an enemy. Also, it's something she could use safely in the presence of the party. Her current technique isn't really safe to use in non-moth groups.
>>
>>36183188
>The exercise is entirely centered around how to effectively disengage and evade
Then we should train these things and not "let Sheszka not catch you while trying to let her catch you". And for that Jin or Lyra would be better trainings partner, and we should do it in the dungeon. "running around" isn't helping with that. And the sparring is useful, but not with stick combat, because even the branch she has is already to heavy for her it actually hinders her in evading, and the kind of staff she could use, something sharp and thin, we can't spar with.
>>
>>36183234
>she falls from great height and dies.
web safety net.
>>
>>36183201
maybe we could work her up to a spear and have her coat it with her powders. I mean the spear would give her reach to help her keep enemies away, if she can cut them then her powder goes straight into the blood of her opponent so it would probably act faster, and she would still be able to use her staff fighting technics with the spear so not as much of a learning curve
>>
You glance around the nest- For once, Mom is sitting in the nest proper, weaving.

Which means Aria is probably out hunting, or she'd be driving your sister into the ground.

You tuck Nin under one arm and wave as you walk up to her. The little moth gets one arm free, pulling the extra sheet off, looking around at the heavily woven nest.

Your mother looks up from her work, another tunic, undoubtedly trying to keep up with your siblings growth.
She looks from you, to the moth slung under your arm, and back again. One eyebrow rises alone, and she smiles slyly.

"Dearheart, you understand that we protect the moths, yes? Not abduct them?"
Nin nods sagely, though it's mostly spoiled by the fact that she's hanging sideways at you side.
"It was for her own safety, yes. She is simply too annoying to leave alone."

The little moth squawks her denial, and your mother laughs as she starts to struggle.

You flip her right side up, dropping her to her feet next to you.
She flourishes the blanket around her shoulders like a cape, sweeping it out, then wrapping it around one arm and pulling it back in for a bow.
"I am Nin! Daughter of Sil, and first amongst the servants of the most royal Lyra!"

Your mother strokes her chin, nodding in time with the theatrical moth.
"I see, I see. You will need to be much stronger then, yes? I am thinking that Jin and Sheszka will be fighting you for that."
You groan.

Nin clasps her hands before, making an attempt at an innocent face.
"Oh, but this humble moth would be glad for any place at her Highness' side."

You are fairly certain that she has no idea what an 'innocent' face is whatsoever.

"Of course. Well then, How can I help our queen, yes?"

You throw a headlock around the struggling moth before she can speak up.
"This little brat wants to leave the forest, yes?"
>>
>>36183247
We really shouldn't load her down with too many things to carry. A rapier would probably help her better than a knife. No weapon she uses should need letting her opponent close enough to get to her vulnerable wings. Her weapon should be something that keep her opponent at range.

>>36183279
A spear would get into problems with her wings, would be heavy and therefore additional weight costing her precious speed.
>>
>>36183255
So maybe we'll bring it up with her at some point, see what she thinks.
>>
>>36183296
Both of the eyebrows, this time.
"And?"

"And she came to me."
There's a moment of quiet, except for the soft grunting as Nin tries to free herself from your grip. It's not going to work.

"What are you looking for from me, little one?"
"Help, yes. How can I ask her parents to let her go?"
"Talking to them would be a start."
"Mmhm."

"Go see them when the rain passes, yes? This is not the sort of thing to wait on."
You nod.

A more sane exercise regime would be to just not fly up as high as she can. She can carry weights just fine a foot off the ground. She can fly horizontally instead of vertically.

Thing is, we don't need a web safety net. The point of the exercise is not to fly far, just to fly quickly over a very short distance, maybe a few meters. The goal is to develop her burst speed and immediate thrust capabilities to make aerial dodging easier to achieve.
>>
Guys, before we overplan how we think she should fight, we should look into how the moths already fight. they DO have a guard unit.
And supposedly weaponize their dust.
I doubt its by coating a spear with it. Probably just blow a cloud of dust directly at an opponent and let them breath it.

>Probably just blow a cloud of dust directly at an opponent and let them breath it.
Which might work for moths, but for us it would be problematic, since two of four of us fight in close combat and could get hit too.
>>
>>36183387
>I doubt its by coating a spear with it. Probably just blow a cloud of dust directly at an opponent and let them breath it.

Yes, that's what it says in the pastebin. "Moth combat" is essentally hovering above an enemy, dropping dust and hoping it takes effect before you get tired.

Problem is, it's not so great in non-moth groups. If Nin did that in close quarters with our party, she'd dose us too. That's why we need more direct delivery methods.

Hollow darts. A dosed spear. A dusted knife for a last resort. That sort of thing.
>>
>>36183381
> The point of the exercise is not to fly far, just to fly quickly over a very short distance, maybe a few meters. The goal is to develop her burst speed and immediate thrust capabilities to make aerial dodging easier to achieve.
No, its not the point at all. Its just the correct way of doing it.
The guy EXPLICITLY said to fly as high as we can with as much weights as she can.
I EXPLICITLY said she should INSTEAD fly fast but close to the ground. Or try to lift weights into the air only a foot off the ground.
He/another anon then counter argued saying that a safety net can be in place to catch her when she falls.
The point is that we are arguing over this extreme stuntmen behavior

To make an analogy. his suggestion is akin to saying
>Find the tallest building around. go to its roof, then lower yourself over its side and perform pull ups.
Where slipping would cause your death, and
>Use a safety net to catch you if you do slip off the building

instead of a more sane
>Do pull ups on a bar that is set such that your feet are a few inches off the ground. Preferably over a safety mat
>>
>>36183414
>>36183438
Guys, its MAGIC dust.
For all we know she can magic it to not harm allies. Or we can develop immunity to specific dusts via repeated exposure which our enemies won't have.
I nominate sleep dust for the best thing to practice with.

Or maybe we can wear some sort of protective mask when going into battle by her side.
>>
So do we take her to Sara afterwards? See if she has the gift?
>>
>>36183441
>The guy EXPLICITLY said to fly as high as we can with as much weights as she can.
Actually, he said fly up as "quickly" as she could. Nothing about how high: it could be, at most, ten feet.
>>
>>36183464
>MAGIC dust
Not as far as we know.
Not anymore magic than our fire conjuring at least, and that certainly can hurt our allies.
>>
>>36183438

The moths might also have an antidote dust for their poison, or it might be possible to build up a naturally immunity in a way similar to arsenic by taking small doses over time. For us, we can just heat the air near us and the convection should drive the dust away, assuming the particles just don't burn.

As for the "getting tired" thing. Having her try to hover for extended periods with added weight might be a good way to build up that endurance.

But I do agree. There are moth guards who do know how moths normally fight. Their input would be invaluable.
>>
>>36183477
Are you saying she should fly up fast, but only ten feet, com down and then again?
I'm not sure what the point of that would be. Her wings aren't muscles. We can train her endurance, but that would be through prolonged flight, not through whatever that is supposed to do.
>>
>>36183464
>Or maybe we can wear some sort of protective mask when going into battle by her side.
So charging into battle wearing a terrifying, intimidating helmet that's really only supposed to act as a gas mask. Awesome.
>>
>>36183477
1. If he meant go up to 10 feet, then down again, then up again, repeat. than that should have been phrased very differently. But I can chalk that up to miscommunication...

>Not anymore magic than our fire conjuring at least

If we blast them with it. We have quite a lot of find control over it. I am saying maybe she can control her dust after it leaves her body. dust bending if you would.

"Wing ups" seemed to imply an exercise that uses explosive power and repetition, and you wouldn't really need to go all that high. As for the safety net thing, that wasn't even part of the original idea and there's no way to prove that the person who suggested it was the same person who brought forward the idea of the wing ups.

No, its explicitly seperate from magic in this setting, this has been explained dozens of times by now. Its more like a Extraordinary Ability in D&D.
>>
>>36183637
>Because flying strains more of her body than just her wings? Her back, for example.
Which are muscles. That are being trained and developed, one way or another. You know, like how birds have strong chests because of the flying they do, instead of swole wings.
>>
>>36183641
>As for the safety net thing, that wasn't even part of the original idea and there's no way to prove that the person who suggested it was the same person who brought forward the idea of the wing ups.
It doesn't need to be proven, because I never claimed that it was relevant. I explicitly said it might be a different anon.
The point was whether this was a point of contention. Regardless of what original post intended. someone HAS thought that using a safety net and extreme excercises would be a better idea than just doing sane excercises
>>
>>36183637

I'm all for burst training, and getting her a rapier- She can use her wings to speed her on land dodging, its a light piercing weapon

And I want to see moth duelist.
>>
>>36183441

I am that Anon, and my intent was that she fly only about 5-10 feet from ground level and do so repeatedly until she was tired. Wings, like any other moving part of the body, require muscles to move and can be trained. I said "fly straight up as quickly as she can" but failed to add the stipulation on height assuming most people would come to the conclusion that made the most apparent sense. It would seem that was a mistake.

I will admit that my rough outline was not perfect, but I don't think any of it is useless, stupid, or insane. They were simply offered as starters for discussion on how to train Nin, which has worked in certain capacities.

If you have an idea that you consider more intelligent, feel free to offer it.
>>
>>36183673
>It doesn't need to be proven, because I never claimed that it was relevant
Yet you asked for it to be explained? At least be consistent.
>>
>>36183637
>Because flying strains more of her body than just her wings? Her back, for example.
And doing "flight exercises" would work out those muscles. See olympic runners/swimmers/dancers/cyclists/whatever.

>>Moths can't really fly anything like harpies- they need updrafts to get any distance
>Moth can't get "fly faster". She can get "fly more agile" by training her reaction time.
"To get any distance" =! "lift off at all". They use updrafts to compensate for their poor endurance. All flying animals use updrafts, because those simply make it easier and require less effort to fly. But some are more dependent on them than others to avoid exhaustion. The goal of an exercise is achieved by building muscles via pushing the muscles in question.
>>
>>36183669
A moth can't fly faster by just beating its wings harder. They don't work the same as bird wings.
>>
>>36183731
>"To get any distance" =! "lift off at all".
No one implied anything like that. The point was to show how moth wings don't work like bird wings. Not even in this setting.
>>
>>36183731
>>36183637

Flying could very well strain her back, as could any strenuous exercise where she has to lift, carry, move, or push something. I view training those muscles and technique as essential for someone used to a home life so she doesn't lift the wrong way on tiny muscles in the middle of a fight.

How is Can't fly any faster = can't lift of at all ?
No one ever said she can't lift of at all. Nor did anyone imply that with that quote.

1. I was EXPLICITLY replying to
>Moth can't get "fly faster". She can get "fly more agile" by training her reaction time.
2. Lift does not refer to weights, it refers to lifting her own body.
3. Speed comes from strength. More muscle = more speed.

I'm sorry to say,
The moths flew away,
But have a spider, she's happy to stay.

The littlest of spiders, so blue and so small,
Has a talent, a spark! For explosive dodgeball!
Much to the chagrin of her eldest sibling,
Who's now the subject of extensive testing.
She tried to escape this ignoble fate,
But her father was eager to join debate.

She made a buckler a bomb, twice in succession.

>>
>>36183848
>3. Speed comes from strength. More muscle = more speed.
No it doesn't. Moth wings do not work like that. Moths do not fly like birds. They use air currents and let them carry them, and they only move their wings during flight to find another current to float on. They don't constantly move them because that would mean pressing their fragile wings against the air current, which would disrupt their flight and at worst injure their fragile wings.
>>
>>36183947
Eh, you'Re point of bird flight vs. moth flight in all honor. Thats not how moths fly either. They do move their wings fast to move the air around their wings to create the draft they float on. And they can flap hard to move faster, up or down, not like bird in any direction though.
>>
>>36183947
They use the air currents because otherwise they will become quickly exhausted. Even a chicken can fly a few meters before it exhausts itself, no air currents are involved.
A moth can go further than that, but will rapidly exhaust itself through such "sprinting". Air currents allow them to fly long distances and long time by using absolute minimal effort. When gliding on an air current, their speed is equal. But short distance "sprinting" is entirely possible for them, hence my "generating lift" (that is, flying under their own wingpower without any aircurrent)

Furthermore. Any excercise involving such "sprints" will improve their wing muscleature and allow them to glide on wing currents for longer period of time
>>
Can Lyra taste with her legs? I was reading a paper in the american naturalist, and I came upon the question.

Also apparently many spiders have no sense of hearing as we think of it.
>>
>>36184070 cont.
The reason I assert they can fly with no wing current, is that it is IMPOSSIBLE to catch wind currents otherwise.
You need to fly up, under your own power, high enough to catch a wind current in the first place.
>>
>>36184070
Actually, moths are capable of some impressive acrobatics in midair (and hummingbirds are just ridiculous). http://www.smithsonianmag.com/videos/category/science/how-hummingbirds-and-moths-fly/

But they create that lift in order to hit those updrafts that let them glide, but they still do need to flutter pretty hard. I wish I could say what kind of muscles they have, but I haven't been able to find anything on them.

Thats what they use their wings for, he is right however, that they can't just beat their wings harder in order to fly faster in any direction, the directions in which they can move is dictated by the current they move on. "Training" her backmuscles, if that is possible it doesn't actually work for real moths, but then again, it doesn't for spider either, would at best allow her to do emergency sprints more often, or maybe longer, she wouldn't get any faster though, because her wings can only take so much. The static of her wings, compared to those of a bird, simply don't allow for fast wingbeats quite the same way, since they are basically "on strings" in difference to a bird who has a skeleton to support its wings.

>Actually, moths are capable of some impressive acrobatics in midair (and hummingbirds are just ridiculous)
When I said moths I was referring to those humanoid ones in ReMonster, since he quoted the QM saying that unlike the harpies, the moths are reliant on wind current to "get any distance"

I was accepting that assertion that they differ from IRL moths in such regards, which makes sense due to their size. Hummingbirds and real months are tiny, and the square cube law works in their favor. Any larger flying animal is very reliant on wind currents. I am finding it more odd that harpies aren't. But accept that to be magic.

The crux of my argument is, that there are two different modes of flight
>Gliding on a wind current
how moths get any distance
>Flapping wings really fast
rapidly exhausts moths, but if it is doable, because if not they could never reach wind currents in the first place.
And that sprinting exercises can help with that. which would help when doing most flying related to combat with land creatures, because there are no wind currents involved in that. (naturally aerial combat between fliers is different and much more reliant on wind currents).

Also, while we are at it. you can flap inside the current to go even faster. if you really wanted to. For VERY short time periods (sprinting)

>Thats what they use their wings for
What? gliding on the air current is also using your wings.
And how do you think "using your wings" to reach an air current works?

>they can't just beat their wings harder in order to fly faster in any direction
Sure they can, for short distances.
It would be completely ineffective at getting to another town faster when they glide for hours, because then they are almost entirely gliding on wind currents. And being over exerted will make it harder to catch wind currents gracefully.

But short distance sprinting is extremely valuable for combat.

You cough into your hand, and your mother looks back up.
"While we wait, then... Would you help me train her, a little?"

She looks to the little moth and frowns.
"Hnnn.... Maybe a bit of- Bring her upstairs, yes? I will clean this up, and we will see what we can do."

Nin bows extravagantly, and you haul her over your shoulder, reaching one arm back so you can keep Sheszka from falling out in her sleep.

The arena is silent. Ominously so.

Returned to her feet, Nin paces the circle, watching each branch, each strand of silk hanging above. She hums, her step bouncing, and you laugh a little, smiling as you watch her.

"Is even this much new enough?"
She tilts her head back, trying her hardest to look down on you.
"While her Majesty may be free to roam, I am afraid her subjects are not! Each step beyond my village is an adventure!"
"Mhm. After we speak with your mother, then. Maybe I can take you to the village, or the waterfall. I am sure Sara would like to go."

"A waterfall?"
"Where a river meets a cliff, yes? It crashes down, and mist arises. And there is a great deal of magic there, too. Stars hang just above, and even someone like me can reach."
She looks a little lost in thought, and she smiles back at you when she blinks.
"I would like that."

You nod as your mother pulls herself over the edge, rising like some sort of demon god: Horns holding back her hair as she smiles menacingly.

Even the infallible moth flinches a little.

"Well then. Let us start, yes?"
"Okay."
"Yes."

She points at the little winged insect.
"You can fly properly, yes? And make powders?"
"I can make dust- What do you mean by 'properly'?"
>>
>>36184496
She gestures widely.
"Are your wings finished growing? It makes a big difference, yes."
"I- I don't know."
"Hm. You'll have to ask, then. Do you know how to fight?"

"I can use a stick-"
"No, that doesn't work. You won't have the strength to bludgeon- A minute, yes."

Mom disappears into her little vault, legs clattering as she flies down the stairs. Nin looks to you, confused, and you shrug.
Gods forbid you have any idea what goes through your mother's mind.

It isn't long before she's back up the stairs, a little bundle in hand. She wastes no time laying it out, and you can see- She brought up a small pile of weapons.

Emphasis on small.
They wouldn't even serve you as a dagger- Some of them aren't even as long as your hand.

Nin kneels next to the plethora of blades, watching as your mother starts to pick through them.

"Something to stab with. Reach isn't a priority- You're small enough that anything too big is a liability, yes? Pick anythng that catches your eye, and we'll go from there."

The little moth half turns her head to catch your eye, silently begging for some help.

You loom over the moth.
Literally.

In any case, Mom has way too many weapons.
Does she just find them in ruins, or does she take trophies? It could be either, really.
She's kinda nuts.

You pick the rapier up with one hand- You'd say it weighs nothing at all, but you've come to terms with the fact that you could easily use a car as a weapon. Probably.

"Try this one, yes?"

Nin reaches up and takes it from you, lithe little fingers wrapping around the hilt. She holds it steady, keeping her arm straight out from her body as she watches the light dance along the slim blade.

Mom watches, tapping her fingers against her cheek.
"Yes. That should work. Let's start."

And just like that, you can hear the tolling of a bell, signally forevermore the death of your free time.

Nin, at least, picks things up fast. Mom corrects her grip in seconds, rearranging her fingers to hold the weapon properly. She leads the delicate moth through a short series of thrusts and parries.
And then, of course, it starts.

"Again."
Nin complies, a wide smile lighting her face as she dances, blade in hand.
"Again."

You take a seat, and pick up one of the small daggers. Maybe for her free hand? Or as a backup. Backups are good.
>>

"Again."
Her energy is starting to flag. Her form wobbles, falters. Mom taps it back into place with on finger, pushing her arm back up.
"Again."

It's nice to watch it from the sidelines, for once.

By the time your Mom is satisfied, Nin is lying in a flat on the floor, wings twitching weakly. You pluck the weapon from her gnarled hand, stowing it behind you, and prop her up letting her sip from your shield.
Most of it winds up on her shirt. She's more than a little thirsty.

Mom nods.
"Not bad at all, yes? Work on your stamina, to start. We can worry about using your wings once we know they're full grown- They can tear, otherwise."
Your mother tilts her head to the side, listening as her newest trainee tries to drown herself.

"The rain is finished, as well. Take her home, yes? Her family will be worried."
You nod, and Mom picks up the weapons, heading back into the tree with them.

Nin lets the shield fall from her lips, her eyes looking around warily.
"Is she gone?"
You smile.
"For the moment."
"I cannot move, Lyra."
"I know."

She looks up at you, catching your smirk.
"You knew this would happen?"
"Yes."
"You are an evil, evil queen."
"Oh, I will make you a worthy subject yet, little moth."

She giggles a little, and you stand, heading for the forest floor.

Dad and Sara are rather preoccupied with whatever they happen to be studying.

But you're not one to let that stop you. You march over, though neither looks up from whatever it is that they're studying today. Sheszka sits up, blinking blearily as you deposit one exhausted moth next to her- Nin carefully folds her feather soft wings, lying in the alcove of the eyesocket.

You have a sudden vision of a war to end all wars, but you dismiss it and turn back to your family's bookworms.
"Dad?"
"Huh?"

He looks up from his books, glancing around for the source before settling on you. Which took longer than it should havem given that you probably take up 75% of his vision while standing over him.

"Lyra?"
"I am headed to the moth village, yes? And I was thinking, given your recent, ah, studies-"
You pause, throwing a meaningful glance at your sister.
"- That perhaps, you could use more healing powder, yes?"

"That would probably be a good idea, I think."
"Mhmm. Do you have a jar handy?"

He roots around a bit before handing you an empty glass.
"Don't stay out too late tonight, okay? Or too far. There's a storm rolling in, it'll get dark early."
You nod, jar in hand.
"I'll hurry, then."

Sheszka stretches behind you, freeing herself from your shell and stepping down.
"Did you have a good rest?"
She smiles brilliantly at you.
"Yes, alpha."

You rub at her ears and head for the edge of the nest. You have places to be.

Across the ruins, through the arches- You move fast. Dad was right about the storm- Clouds are pouring across the sky, running like water. Ugly black and purple looking shapes, dipping lower as the move on the forest.

You can feel the tension gathering in the air, that quiet, dry feeling of a building storm. It's only a matter of time before it bursts.

The guards at the gate, at least, wave you through without a problem. You only have to point to the sleeping form of Nin, and you are whisked into the village proper, heading towards the little moth's home.

Her mother is nearly dancing as you approach, hands tight together.
"Ah- Lyra? Is that you?"
"Yes-"
"You. Ah, You grew? Already?"

You nod, and the woman actually halts a moment, watching you.
"Did Nia-?"
She lets the half finished question hang.

"She beat me by a few days, yes. Not that she was happy about this. But I am thinking it would have been worse."
"That's likely. Is Nin okay? Where was she? She-"

She snaps straight to worried mother in record time. You hope she doesn't give herself whiplash.
"She is fine, yes? Just sleeping. She met me in the ruins, and was caught in the sunshower."
She lets out a long sigh.
"Ahhhhh. Thank Gods. The girl is far too apt at sneaking out for my heart."

The mothgirl's father has fluttered down from the nest, placing one calming hand in his wife's.

She came looking for me because she knew I would leave the forest someday. She begged me to take her with me. I thought it best I ask permission first.

She has too much wanderlust to stay in the village. If you let her leave, she will at least be travelling under the protection of a giant spider.

We will take our moth and leave.

Let her dig her own grave. It will be fun.

>building storm
The crappy dungeon is near the Moth village. If the storm breaks before we make it back, we could camp in there for a night.

>Wake the little moth, let her talk for herself.

>The crappy dungeon is near the Moth village. If the storm breaks before we make it back, we could camp in there for a night.
We are not that desperate.
Could we rebuild some section of the ruins and camp there?
>>
>>36186568
Or we could just stay at the moth village if it's that bad.
>>
>>36186387
>"Nin- She is wanting to leave the village, yes?"
Moth village sleepover time?

>>
>>36186638
>>36186591
I don't think we can? We've gotta be off the forest floor, and moth houses are not spider friendsly
>>
>>36186568
The point is, if we get caught in the storm near the village, the dungeon is close by. If we're closer to the ruins or already near home, we can go there.

>>36186591
>Or we could just stay at the moth village
Last time we were hear, REQM described the Moth homes as something we could poke our Elf half into, but we'd shred them if we tried to fit our Spidery hugeness inside.

Staying in the village would probably mean staying out doors.
>>
So now we aim to carry our wolf, harpy, and moth and have made plans to carry our elf. How many more people can we collect before we collapse under the weight of their friendship?
>>
>>36186714
I was just kidding, Lyra noted last time she wouldn't fit into those.
>>
>>36186763
I'm sure Lyra can support a decent amount of masonry on her spiderbutt thanks to her earth powers.
>>
>>36186759
We can just earthshape us a little hut.
>>
>>36186850
I suppose we could if we had to, but the dungeon sounds better than a little hut.

This may all be moot. We might make it back to the nest in time. Just presenting the dungeon as a good option if we need it.
>>
>>36186763
pfff.
Just you wait. We'll be carrying an entire castle by the end of this quest.
>>
>>36186901
Depends on how far away from the dungeon we are. Not much point running there for shelter, if we can just make our own.
>>
>>36186916
Don't forget the airship anon
>>
>>36186964
We will be Laputa.

"Ah. There is something..."
Sil watches you quietly, and you turn carefully jostling the little moth's shoulder. Sheszka stands attentively at your side as the little moth rise from your skull, rubbing at her eyes and looking around.

"L-Lyra?"
You take her hand, and she stands, stepping carefully down to the forest floor.
"This is your village, yes? There was something you wanted to say."

She looks past you, to her parents, and her grip tightens in yours.
"Ah-"

She struggles, half choking, standing slightly behind you. Her mother leans to one side, trying to look the girl in the eyes, and she turns her head down, hiding in her own hair.
"Nin?"

Her wings flutter behind her while she stands silent.

You pull your hand free from hers, and her head snaps up, eyes frightened- And you grab her under her arms, easily lifting her as she squeaks. You drop her before you, before her mother, and spin her around- Letting her hands come to rest in yours, your palms outwards, on either side of her.

Her fingers twine with yours, and she finds her voice.

"Mama- Mama, I want... I want to go."
The woman watches, holding her husbands hand, her face blank.
"Nin-"

"I can't. I can't stay, Mama. I can't live and die here, never seeing anything past the village. I don't, I don't want to. Even the ruins are beautiful- The stones and statues and flowers- I, the- There's so much. So, so much that I've never seen. Mama-"

"Nin-"
"Please. Please. I love you, I love you all so much- Mama and Papa and Rie, and even my brothers. But I can't stay."

The moth steps forwards, her hand sliding free from her husbands. One step, two steps. Her eyes welling with emotions as she moves closer.

She wraps her arms around her child's shoulders, and Nin releases your hands, hugging her back, each pressing their faces into the other's shoulder.
>>
>>36187478
"Mama-"
"Nin. Little one, Little heart."
"Mama, I-"

You step back, ever so slightly as their voices crack with emotion, holding each other.
"Mama, I don't want-"
"Sssshh. Shhhhh. I know. I know, Nin."
"Mama!"

"I love you, Nin. I know- I knew you would never stay. That if the forest didn't swallow you up, that one day, I would wake and your bed would be empty."
"Mama Mama I love you-"

You can hear the tears in her voice.
Sil's hand rubs circles on her daughter's back, carefully brushing past the girl's wings as they cry into the other's arms.

They part with a sniffle, eyes puffy and red against their pale skin.
Sil steps back from her child, and her eye's lock onto yours- Her voice trembles as she speaks, but her plea comes out piercing all the same.

"You will take her, won't you? You will keep my daughter safe?"
"Yes. A hundred, hundred times, by every God. I swear."

Your voice sounds almost unfamiliar in the twilight of the moth's village, ringing with a strength you can almost feel.
"I will keep her safe. I will bleed dry before any could touch her."

Kri steps forward again, one hand on his wife's shoulder, and you can hear her voice clearly, even as quiet as it is.
"Thank you."

Nin's father spotted the jar before you left, and took it to be filled without a word, nodding quietly. As you turned and left the quiet village, Nin refused your shell-
Crawling into your arms and tucking her head into your shirt, curling tightly against you.

You nod to Sheszka as you step back into the forest- Picking a high pace, chitin clacking as you went. You need to beat the storm home.

You break through the woods into the ruin's meadow before the little moth speaks up, voice weak. The rainbow from the afternoon is nowhere to be seen, clouds roiling overhead, nipping at your heels.

"...Thank you, Lyra."

I wouldn't say prologue, we probably entered Chapter 1 by the time we came to the village for the first time. We pretty much finished Chapter 2 last time.

Whelp, my mind went directly to that scene in Berserk where Guts kills a hundred men by himself in the Golden Age.

And then it amplified it by a bunch, so Lyra against several hundred / thousand men and monsters and fighting to give her companions time to escape.

And then winning.

>>36187979

It was too big to be called a butt. Massive, thick, heavy, and far too rough. Indeed, it was a heap of raw spider.

And far, far too sexy to not be attached to Lyra.

You curl one arm around her, pulling her closer to you, till you can feel the beat of her heart against yours.
One of her arms slips free, finding its way around your side, and she grips your tunic with all the strength she can muster, holding herself to you with everything she has.

You find your voice, rough as it is. You push past the lump in your throat, the tears threatening to fall.
"I meant it."

You can feel the brush of her hair, and her head turns, red rimmed eyes looking up from your chest, wordlessly waiting, watching.

"Everything. Every word. I meant what I said, Nin. To her. To you."
You swallow, heavily, your fingers curling around her.

"I will protect you, yes? I will keep you safe, Nin. I will show you the world. Beyond the forest. So far that you will look up, and you will no longer recognise the stars. I swear."

She smiles- a slow, honest expression, her cheeks dimpling slightly as her lips curl, a gently blush spreading beneath her puffy eyes. She turns her face back to your shirt, the fabric muffling her voice even as she pulls on it.

"Thank you. Thank you. Thank you."
She takes a rattling breath, fingers tugging at your clothes as she continues.
"For helping me. For saving Rie, for taking me. For your promises. Thank you, Lyra."
"Mmm."

There's nothing to say. You don't trust yourself to respond to that.
>>
>>36188607

You can hear the rush of rain as it starts to fall behind you- Not the hiss of the sunshower, but a loud, clattering noise as the raindrops hammer off of leaves and bark and dirt and stone. You move a bit a faster, racing the horizon, willing a bit of speed into your legs. Heading home.

Home.

"It will not be forever, Nin."
You feel her shift against you. Listening.
"We will come back, yes? To the woods. To our homes. Because there are places to return to, people we wish to see again and again."
You smile down at her.

"This is one more promise, yes? We will be back, someday."
You feel her nod into your chest, and you rock her gently against yourself.
Home is right before you. Your legs clamber over the familiar bark, and Sheszka easily swing up the ladder, hand over hand.
You step into the nest, and look forward- Your family is all there, a warm circle, smiles, food.

Behind you, the storm roars, engulfing the forest.
But this piece is dry.
