/tg/ - Traditional Games

Welcome to the XXIV installment of "Disney Villains Victorious."

Disney Villains Victorious is a new /tg/ homebrew project based on the idea of a world, not entirely unlike our own, in which all the villains from all the Disney animated feature films were not defeated at the ends of their movies but were instead victorious, completing their goals in part or in whole.

It is a world in which Ursula rules the seas, defied only by the uncatchable Pirate Lords, the cutthroat merchants of the East India Trading Company and the might of Atlantis and its magitech-toting mercenaries. It is a world where the grasslands and jungles and forests are prowled not only by fearsome primal beasts like Shere Kahn and Scar but also by the ruthless, tireless hunters that stalk them. It is a world where Europe has been divvied up between evil sorcerous monarchs like Maleficent, the Horned King, Grimhilde and Jafar, mad, inquisitorial clergymen like Frollo, and Dark Gods like Hades and Chernobog.

It is not, however, a world completely devoid of courage, heroism or hope. Around the world, the PCs' characters and their allies plot and plan, fight and strive and win their own victories against the villains that would rule them. The time to fight and to be free is now.

Anyway, new thread. TIME FOR HEROICS

Oh cripes. Sorry! It completely slipped my mind!

Well, we do have most of the system done in alpha by now, so nowadays these threads are mostly fun and some arguing. I think we won't burn ourselves out too much

IRC/Roll20 game up when?

On the new skill system, the skills instead of starting at level 1 go straight to rank 3 when you put the first point in them, right?

It says there that the cap for Zero level characters is 4 ranks in a skill. Does that mean that you can only apply one more point to any skill on Zero level, or that they go up to 8?

>>36182625
Later tonight I'll see if I can try to run a quick thing, hopefully

You motherfucker

How did it go? Does the system work? Got storytime? was it fun?
>>
>>36182639

Skills go from 0 to 3, from 3 to 4, from 4 to 5 and from 5 to 6.

I thought that was pretty clear in the 1d4chan page.

Quick summary being, he used to be a pianist in one of the cassino. The kind of guy that would cower and get out of the way when the big guys appeared, and would eternally want no trabbu, things were okay. Lost his wife years ago, raised his son as best as he could

Then his son got sick of it, told him that it was no way to live, cowering in fear and left to join the Slim Gang. Bryce knew it was true, and so he quit his job and set off to try and become a real man, to one day come back and gain the respect of the West and his son back.

He's kind of a coward but he is very, very willing to try and stand up now, because what else does he have to lose? Not very good with those revolvers, but he's trying to get better. Trick-shots are the stuff of legends. He's pretty bro-tier with friends, loyal to a fault.

Sounds like pic related
>>
>>36182945
So what kind of song are you looking for here? I was thinking along the lines of something about having confidence in himself, but you know the character better than I do.
>>
Where does Kingdom Hearts come into all of this?
>>
>>36182982

I was actually thinking something more like "I'll figure this out....Somehow. Or die trying."

Meanwhile, I think I'll try my hand at writing something. Possibly my version of Frollo's defeat/redemption. Got any ideas/requests?

>The day had finally arrived. Oh, it had FINALLY arrived after nine long and grueling months of waiting. Today would be the day that Gaston LeGume's son would be born, his first son and the heir to his impressive legacy. It was a day he had been anticipating for a long time, and not just since Belle, his bride, had told him that she was pregnant. He had been looking forward to this moment from the very day he'd first laid eyes on he brown haired woman and had decided that he would make her his wife and the bearer of his sons.

>Today was the day at long last, and Gaston scarcely thought he could be more happy than he was right now. Well, he could have been more happy, perhaps, if he had been allowed into their bedchamber while his wife was actually delivering his son. It had been a grueling nine months for more reasons than a new father's anticipation. It had been a difficult pregnancy with more than a few scares and close calls, but his wife was a strong woman and, he knew, would bear him a strong child.

>Even so, the midwife had insisted that Belle be attended during her labor by all of her assistants and the town physician, leaving very little room for a man as large and robust as Gaston to remain comfortable. He had instead taken to standing in the hall just outside the open door, chest bursting with a new father's pride as he imagined all that he would teach his firstborn about the world and their place in it. Wrestling. Drinking. Wooing. An of course, hunting. Once this boy was fully grown the two of them would set up a hunting dynasty that would be famous throughout all the world!

>>36182670
Yeah, it all worked pretty well. The system itself allowed us to get things going fast. I'll give a rough summary

>Party consists of a Arabian Trader, a Alantean Scholar, A alantean Merc and a chinse martial artists
>They are hired by the EITC to secure trading rights with a large hun controlled port by any means they deem necessary
>They are escorted to the Local Lord's palace, where the players are given the situation
>The peasants are revolting, scholar passess ocult checks and sees that Huns seem to be prepared to fight magic
>Lord brings scholar aside to talk while rest of the players go off to food hall and eat
>Lord reveals he is actually half hun and half chinese, and unlike other generals, actually pretty scared about the whole spirtual rebellion thing.
>He tells player that if the rival Huns see him not being a dick, they will attack.
>He tells the scholar to help redirect the Revolt into a different Hun Province, so he can give some slack to his people
>scholar agrees and party heads out they stop at a apothecary and try to pick up supplieS
>Apothecary is interrupted by party, and acidentally upsets ancestor
>Arabian Trader grabs supplies off shelf
>Ancestors take exception to that and possess the shop keep and attack
>combat begins, possessd guy has two strikes
>Trader dodges attack, Scholar uses a small ritual to try and exercise the ghosts, gets a strike in.
>Merc blows a whole through the shop keeps head, spirits rise out of the body cursing the party. They proceed to run like hell.
And thats where we stopped

I liked writing this a lot.
Sung to the tune of “I’m Free” – Footloose
BRYCE
Looking into the sky I know I’m right
Know that I’ll figure it out, know that I can fight
We only get one chance
But noting ties my hands
Know what I want
Listen to me
Nothing I want
Is out of my reach

(I’M STUCK)
HEAVEN HELP THE MAN who fights his fear
Hardly know if anything is keeping me here
Sure there’s some reason that I’m hanging on
I’m sure I’ll make it right cause here’s where I belong
(I’M STUCK)

Running away has never made me free
Nothing I’ve held on to is a guarantee
So I can stop running now
And I’ll never fall down

Cause I’m shaking the past
And breaking the chains
Taking control
If that’s what it takes

(I’M FREE)
HEAVEN HELP THE MAN who fights his fear
Hardly know if anything is keeping me here
Sure there’s some reason that I’m hanging on
I’m sure I’ll make it right cause here’s where I belong
(I’M FREE)

HEAVEN HELP THE MAN who fights his fear
I’ll look it in the eye face life right right now right here
Maybe I can finally right all my wrongs
Arms held high and side by side I’m strong.

>Caught up in the rich future he so clearly foresaw, Gaston very nearly missed the increasingly strained groans and grunts of his wife and the soft but worried admonitions of the midwives and doctor attending her. Something was going wrong with the labor, a possibility that the man hadn't even entertained, leaving him somewhat dumbfounded. He pushed himself away from the wall and through the doorway, demands already out of his mouth half-spoken when he saw Belle's face, the woman staring right at him with a wild intensity he had never seen before.

>The look of desperation on his wife's face was enough to give even the Master Hunter pause, which was just enough for the doctor, a puny mincing little man to lay hands on him and push him back out into the hall. So flabbergasted was Gaston that he couldn't even utter a complaint as the door was shut in his face, the voices of the doctor and those old hens of his raising in alarm as his wife let out something sounding like a strangled scream. Rousing himself angrily out of shock, the hunter tried the handle and found it locked against him.

>He began beating on the door with one large fist, demanding as loudly and authoritatively as he could to be let in and to be told what was happening. Something was wrong with his son and with his wife, and he would be damned if a quack with a degree and a gaggle of women were going to keep him from them. Through the solid wooden door he heard the head midwife that Belle would need to push hard and to push now, and the strength and ferocity of his wife's scream as she did so was something that, for just a moment, frightened Gaston more than he had been in a long time.

There wasn't really any combat till the end, but they used their traits fairly well. Powers were a bit unused, but then again, they were all combat focused. Idea regarding King Louie:
He once tried learning from a human shaman his monkeys kidnapped how to commune with the Spirits. He accidentally summoned a servant of the Firebird. He may have developed some kind of pyromancy, and may now have his monkeys worship the Great Eagle of the Red Flower.
>>
>>36183356
Firebird has no servants, and King Louie is an honarary member of the hunters guild.
>>
>>36183243

Sure, but what are the plans for the next session? Will the spirit come back for revenge in an epic boss battle?

Give us some thing to get the brain juices flowing
>>
>>36183374
Fine, an avatar or whatever. Or some completely unrelated spirit linked to fire.
>>
>>36183374
Well, I guess it's all optional. Maybe in your setting he's a Hunter, maybe in mine he's the leader of a cargo cult of pyromaniac monkeys.
>>
>>36183307

Yes, 20 is the Target Number for what a PC would consider to be basic fucking around.

We call it challenging because it's where they start being able to fail, but it's though or hard.

For example: breaking down a normal door is TN 20, but any door stronger than average will have a higher TN to break it.

This is the troll who posted the My Little Pony pic. I failed my Will Save to resist trolling, I'm sorry. Couldn't help it.

That said, I have an honest but blunt question about the setting in term of mood. Are you guys going for more of a wistful "got to set things right" mood similar to Kingdom Hearts or some edgy Warhammer/Game of Thrones snuff-festival. Because from what I'm reading it can go either way. I think reading in a previous thread about Merida being raped and torn apart by the Dire Bear Mor'du and it made me wonder what you guys were trying to go with.
>>
>>36183379
I plan on having them attack the revolt, and then lead them off. I am going to give hints of Mulan leading the revolt, so i might have her give chase after the players
>>
>>36183494

We are just making a setting where the villains won: the Players of each campaign get to decide its tone.
>>
>>36183494
Were trying to make it capable of going either way
>>
>>36183494
>Implying it can't be both
>Implying a world in which people are being raped and torn apart by demon bears can't also be a world in which things can be made better.
>>
>>36183249
>There was in the wake of the scream a single, brief moment of quiet in which the father to be heard the midwives and doctor draw in a collective gasp, and then a brief moment more before another sound reached his ears. It was the sound of a baby crying out for its first breath of air, and Gaston felt relief flood his body and his heart soar. But, again there was something wrong. The crying he heard wasn't the strong, loud crying he'd been expecting but more of a keen yowling between mewling whimpers. Almost the sounds of a small animal.

>Even as he tried to puzzle this new information out, the noises from inside the room ceased and were replaced by the hurried whispers and murmurs of the doctor and midwives, the clattering of bowls and the rustling of bedding and the sloshing of water. Left standing confused and impotent outside the closed door, Gaston found he could do nothing with himself but wait until the way was opened to him, feeling as much the fool as he felt worried for the future of his family. Eventually, after what felt like a long while, the doctor unlocked the door and, looking pale and troubled, nodded the larger man inside.

>Gaston was forced to squint as he entered, as one of the midwives had taken it upon herself to begin opening the curtains to the bedchamber, flooding the room with light. There, in the oversized bed lay his wife, looking so haggard and weak that he could scarcely believe that this was the same woman he'd married. She was smiling though, dreamily, which he took to be a good sign, and was holding a large, swaddled bundle in her arms, which he took to be a better one. Once more the hunter was relieved and, ignoring the frantic protestations of the midwives and doctor, strode up to his new family, ready to welcome his son into the world.
>>
>>36183494

Could go either way, really.

Myself, don't want anything to do with grimdark or anything. No bear rape or any such shit, the world has gone to shit but the PCs are gonna set it right
>>
>>36183494
Depends more on the PCs than anything else, and GM decisions.

Generally killing/acting evil by the PCs is frowned upon, but there are some pretty dark elements in the world. That being said, it's still Disney.
>>
>>36183494
>there are two kinds of games: Kingdom Hearts and Warhammer. No middle ground
>>
>>36183494
Also it is worth noting that the fates of most of the princesses are only rumors. I think the only one that's nailed down for certain is Kida from Atlantis, who is still part of the Heart of Atlantis; and even there there's ambiguity as nobody knows if she's still alive in there.
>>
>>36183568
There's also Mulan, who is a wight.
>>
>>36183581

And Anna, who is not technically alive so much as imperfectly recreated.
>>
>>36183541

>>36183657

>>
>>36183657

Also, enjoy your Barrey-based ban.
>>
>>36183657

Chernobog might have made the powers of love/friendship weaker, but let's be real now

And as the first threads explained, Walt is the win condition against Cherny bigogg

MUSICAL INTERLUDE
Sing to the tune of “I Still Believe” – Miss Saigon.
SVERD
Last night I stayed up watching
My mind just racing
And then I started moving
Got up, walking towards… Something.
Yes, I know my home is far away
But when I see the falling snow I know
It is my home… still.

I still
I still believe
I will return
I know I will
My heart
Against all odds
Holds still

ELSA
Last night the world was sleeping
Once more the nightmare came
I heard you cry out something
A word that sound like…a name
And it hurts me more than I can bear
Knowing part of me is never there
Never know

But still
I still believe
The time will come
When nothing tears my world apart
My heart, forever more
Holds still

SVERD
Yes, still
I still believe
I know as long as I can I keep believing
I’ll live
I’ll live
Live to come home
I will return… I will return
And I alone know why

ELSA
It’s all over, it’s clear
So many things to fear
But I don’t know what’s haunting me
Why can’t I just come inside
What must I from myself hide
I just can’t see

(SIMULTANEOUS SINGING)
SVERD
For still
ELSA
Another empty night
I can’t make it right
SVERD
I still believe
ELSA
They aren’t safe with me
SVERD
As long as I
ELSA
But I wish that myself could tell
Stop my feelings from their sell
SVERD
Can keep believing, I’ll live
ELSA
What my hell must be
SVERD
I’ll live
ELSA
I can’t sleep now
SVERD
I will return
ELSA
I can only cry now
SVERD
And I know why
ELSA
It’s not my life now
SVERD
I swear
ELSA
I swear
BOTH
Until I die

What's everyone else working on?

Japan isn't special. The king's will doesn't shape the land like it does in other places.
Also, some fluff on how the whole King/Land thing works:
At the dawn of civilisation, the First Kings used ancient and powerful magic to ensure that their land would always match their will. As such, as long as true and noble kings ruled the nations, there would be no disputes, and all people would be happy. Unfortunately, not all kings have been true and noble.

Sir Harold the Cunning, Green Knight of the Round Table

>King Arthur and his companions continued on the road on which the cauldron mist was thin, and they found no more Cauldronborn; Sir James and all the Black Knights who had stood guard before him had indeed let none pass. Soon, they came upon a great barred gate with a crowd of mercants and farmers angrily milling about and grumbling in front of it. Curious, Arthur took one aside and asked unto him "What seems to be the problem here?"
>"The Green Knight bars our path!" the peasant exclaimed. "He keeps the gate closed, and refuses to open it unless someone defeats him at Nine Man Morris! We have all lost once, and some sorcery keeps us from playing him again!" The peasant looked over Arthur and his companions before speaking again. "You and your band are strong of arms.....please, force him to open the gate! He claims it will only open if he is defeated at his game, but he must be lying!"
>"Cool your blood, the gate will be open soon enough." Arthur bade the peasant. He pushed his way through the crowd to the gate, where he found two seats and a table of stone, with the board of Nine Man Morris carved upon it. Sitting at the table was a handsome man with a certain brightness in his eyes. He was dressed in full chainmail, a curaiss and a heavy healm, all in a rich, elegant green. There was a shield of the same green by his side, and at his hip a mighty longsword. "What is your name?" Arthur asked.
>"Sir Harold the Cunning." the Green Knight answered. "This gate is enchanted; to pass, beat the challenge granted. Outwit me in this game to enable my summons to the true king's round table."
>"Can I not just give you your summons without playing the game?" Arthur asked.
>The Green Knight chuckled. "Give me all the summons you please, but the point of the gate is to force you to prove who you really are. If you really are the king, then you'll win the game, and I can accept your summons."
>>
>>36184165
Very nice. I really like the characterization you're giving the dinosaur. I nearly lost it when he declared that kings do not need arms.

>Arthur put his hand to his chin, a pensive look on his face. "If I can only play you but once, can I watch you play others before I play you myself?"
>The Green knight shrugged. "I don't see why not. Anyone who smart enough to beat me at all would be smart enough to want to study my playstyle first." And so the Green Knight played each of Arthur's companions, defeating them all handily. When it finally came time for Arthur to play, both players seemed very confident as they put their stones on the table. But Sir Harold's confidence suddenly drained when Arthur rose and drew out Excalibur. "What are you doing?!"
>"The purpose of having you play my companions was to see how you tended to place your stones at the beginning." Arthur explained. "With that knowledge, I have manipulated you into letting me place my stones in positions that will let me defeat you without taking a single turn."
>The Green Knight looked at the table, and then chuckled. "Really? I see not a single mill on the table."
>"There will be seven after I've cut my own lines into the table." Arthur smirked.
>The Green Knight recoiled from the table. "Why, that's cheating! The enchantment will not let you do it!"
>"We shall see." Arthur said. Then, with Excalibur, Arthur carved 7 lines into the table, each one creating a new mill. As he finished the last mill, the gate suddenly shattered as though struck by a giant's sledge.
>As the gathered crowd cheered, the Green Knight could do little but stare at the board in shock. "I’ve….I’ve lost! Why, you must be King Arthur to have outwitted me! HAIL, KING ARTHUR!"

Well, how'd I do this time?

MUSIC
Sung to the tune of “Make them hear you” – Ragtime, 1998 version
PARTY LEAD
It is HERE we tell our story!
Make it echo far and wide!
Make him hear us!
MAKE HIM HEAR US!

PC’S ARMY
It is JUSTICE that’s our battle and we will not be denied!
He will hear us!
HE WILL HEAR US!

PARTY LEAD
And we say to those who scorn us
For the fact we chose to fight
That sometimes there are battles
Where we must stop our plight

And I could not put down my sword
When JUSTICE was my right!
Make him hear us!
MAKE HIM HEAR US!

PC’S ARMY
Our path may lead to heaven or hell
And God will tell us best
But one thing they will never say
Is that I took my rest

For I swear I’ll tell our story
To my daughters and my sons
And I’ll tell them of the final day
When we called to the sun!

PARTY LEAD
PROCLAIM it from your pulpit!
With the sword and with the pen!
Have every child raise his voie
And then, my brothers, then

Have JUSTICE be demanded!
By ten million righteous men!
MAKE HIM HEAR US!
WHEN THEY HEAR US
I’LL BE HERE ONCE AGAIN!

Also, as for China's "land rejects the king" thing:
The First Emperor of China was a powerful sorcerer, and made his own variation of the spell. It bound the spirits of peoples' ancestors to the land, so they could continue to watch and guide their children for generations - and if it is necessary, like it is in the setting, they can defend their territory from any invading outsiders, even once their land is conquered, until all the shrines binding them to the Earth are destroyed.

>As Gaston reached his wife's bedside, the brown-haired woman's smile grew just a bit wider, even if it did seem that her eyes refused to focus. While man had not believed that his wife would need any of the drugs or potions that women so commonly took these days to assist in childbirth, those attending her evidently had, making the tender moment between parent and child somewhat sullied in the hunter's opinion. Still, his son had been born and what's more, Belle had survived the birth, making the entire ordeal an triumph.

>Leaning in, Gaston kissed his wife's sweaty brow and laid a hand upon her head, smoothing her damp and tangled hair in a surprisingly affectionate gesture. Whispering words of congratulations and reassurance, the man reached out with his other hand to gently fold back the swaddling blanket wrapped around his firstborn, flinching, almost imperceptibly, as the infant let out another of those strange and awkward yowls, its mother not seeming at all disturbed by the sound.

>The sight that met the hunter's gaze when he looked upon the child not only sent him stumbling back away from the bed, but was enough to chill the blood in his veins and rob him of his happy thoughts for the future. The baby, the... thing... in his wife's arms was inhuman, covered all over in brown and tawny hair dappled with white spots, its head crowned with a pair of stubby horns. Flicking one long ear in a way that made Gaston's stomach churn, the... beastling... mewled again, its mouth already full of tiny fangs.

>"Oh... Gaston... darling..."

>Belle drawled, smiling wider as she shakily rewrapped the swaddling and drew the little abomination close against her chest.

>"Meet your daughter... Clarisse..."

Though if you're looking for TLDR: you and the other player each have 9 stones. You put them on the board. Every time you get your stones 3 in a row (a 'mill'), you remove one of your opponent's stones. You win when the opponent only has 2 stones, or he can't make any moves.

So much fluff to catch up on. I best get reading.

Yeah, I looked it up and recognized the board design. I have never actually played it or met someone who did, but I've seen the board around many times.

I like the scene, by the way. Reminds me a bit of the "Alexander cutting the knot" thing

This is good. Really, really good. Just as good as the first installment. You're getting me to care for these characters and understand them, one and all. How many do we have interested in playtesting the game then? I need 3-5 players for a playtest soon (As in, today. Probably in ~4-5 hours.) for a game set in the Shadowlands.

>>
>>36184839
I only learned of the game because of a chance encounter with it at the local museum. I have to say, it's simple and easy to pick up while still being a legitimate contest of intellect; between that and how flexible you could be with the board and the game pieces, no wonder it became so popular.

As to the Gordian knot....it's half of what I was going for. Cutting the Gordian knot is taking a complex intellectual problem and finding a simple solution for it by going outside the usual parameters used to solve it. Arthur went outside the parameters, but his solution was still complex and intellectual.

I'd like to talk about Tiers for a moment.

Aside from more Strikes and higher Skills / Attributes caps, should On-a-Roll and Hero give some other bonuses?

We talked about more dice to roll and an automatic increase in Traits and Power Bonuses. Can we do something with it?

Also, there's the fact that Players don't move together to the next Tier, since they are not going to fulfill their goals at the same time unless their goals are pretty much the same.

I suggest Player Characters should move up to the next Tier when all of them have fulfilled one of their Goals.

This way we would avoid disparities in the group and arguments about which Player's Goals the party should deal with first. It'd also give them a mechanical reason to share the spotlight with each other, because dealing with the other Players' Goals is how you increase in power.

Opinions?
>>
Do we still have Madagascar being Dinosaur Island?

This is very nice, I'd like this. it'd help the party work together
>>
>>36186031

These are all really good points and are things we need to be speaking about now. I'm puzzling over the issue of characters not leveling at once, but I'm not sure that this might be so big an issue. I do believe though that leveling ought to have bonuses associated with them. More powerful traits and powers ought to be seriously considered.

>>36185767
You and your damned harry potter and Tolkien and warhammer and damned wizards!

No, but I'll run a game earlier in the day for people who can't make it later this week -- maybe Tues/Thurs. No repeat customers!

>>36186031
>players moving up in a tier when all of them fulfill a goal
Players would need to coordinate their goals well then so that all of them are at least somewhat accomplish able without too much world travel. Other than that; I like it. Throw it in!

>players adding dice
Give them 5d6 drop lowest 2 when they increase to On-A-Roll, but no additional bonus when they reach Hero tier; They'll be getting Heroic Traits/Powers when they reach that tier, no reason to add more dice. Of course, if we don't like that, give them 4d6 drop lowest on all their stats to represent their widening fields of expertise.

>>36185712
If you don't mind, I'll have everyone post up their character sheets on the Roll20 page so I can correct potential errors before we start.

Without much ado, here's the 'join game' page! I'll be taking up to five players, but I'll run it again later this week if you can't make it the first time. Don't despair!

You know what, when you put it that way, I do like the idea in that it helps the party work as a cohesive group and encourages jolly cooperation.
>>
>>36186105

Consider that Player's wouldn't be levelling up one or two sessions away from each other: it could take up to several campaign for the last player to level up.
>>
>>36186115

>Players would need to coordinate their goals well then so that all of them are at least somewhat accomplish able without too much world travel. Other than that; I like it. Throw it in!

If we linked them to each other, the power players would be the first ones to want to work together and choose Goals that go along nicely, because otherwise they would stunt their own precious improvements.

Generally, Villains should be more powerful than a Hero of the same tier but able to be defeated with no deaths by a party of roughly 3 people of the same tier in open conflict. Of course, this can tilt back and forth depending on the type of threat they pose -- an ogre is going to be more of a personal threat than a vicious minister, after all. They should have varying amounts of Strikes but usually more than Three, and access to unique and frankly unbalanced Powers and Traits.

>Poor memories all right. Carefull Nob, or I'll cut you.

>>36187006

Sounds good, but what about Villains who reached a Tier beyond Hero? Because some of them are in a League all of their own.

How many Tiers should the Villains be able to climb?

And should the Kings follow the same rules of the generic villains, once the party is fighting them face to face?
>>
>>36187067

>And should the Kings follow the same rules of the generic villains, once the party is fighting them face to face?

To anwer my own question, I think they should:
they get more Powers, bigger effects and immunities, but I think they should still follow the same basic rules than everyone else.

So Strikes, Prevent Harm and so on.
>>
>>36187067
Villains have a number of tiers undetermined so far. Let's say, oh, five. Barely-a-threat, for gang leaders, etc. Minor threats; Menace a town, maybe. Threats; a small area. Major threats are rulers over sections of a kingdom, usually administrators rather than personal badasses but occasionally magical as well. Kings are the final tier which follow the general rules but have impossibly strong powers to represent how most of them keep their subordinates down via displays of force. Things like Facilier being able to mimic any power in the game by spending a Will point, Shan Yu being literally immortal unless cut down by Mulan, etc.

Uh, my bad.

I'm new to the system so I jumped out to try and sort out all the information and shit.

I also didn't know exactly that my real name would appear so I went to try and change it as quick as possible. I'd appreciate if we could keep that out of the light

Aww, pity I missed the sign up. And I'll be otherwise occupied tuesday.

Anyway, I made stats for everyone else in sleepy hollow. Review and editing for balance would be appreciated.

Also looking for ways to pump up Benedictus with out making him too OP. I've got hopes to make him a recurring threat to the PCs.

I still think it's hilarious our stats spell out RACISW
>>
>>36188958
Posted! Should I put it up here so I can get some balance feedback?
>>
On a totally unrelated note, is it just me who feels that ranged weapons are a little overpowered in comparison to melee/brawl? Or a lot overpowered? The comparative bonuses are not only huge, but can be shot from distance away so you're not exposed to a counterattack. Since it's Disney, I think we should forgo realism a bit and buff melee and brawl a bit and/or nerf ranged weapons.
>>
>>36189467
People generally move fast enough given that you can double your speed by spending an action that melee is a relatively effective strategy, unless you're fighting at extreme range.
Generally, I'd say most ranged weapons provide only +1 bonuses instead of the usual +2 that melee weapons get. Brawl is purposely underpowered because nobody can really take your fists away from you, whereas weapons are difficult to bring into security areas.

At least, that's my reasoning.
>>
>>36189395
>WEAKNESS
>Mark of the Mirror Kingdom: Hannah has a large port wine birthmark that covers most of the left half of her face and some of her right. Persuasion rolls are at -4.
You know, I don't think we ever tried to implement any weaknesses.

Lullaby looks fine. Rally Cry....doesn't really seem beneficial. As it stands, TN20 gets you +1, TN25 gets you +2, TN30 gets you +3....yeah, it's beneficial at these low levels, but the scaling is shit.
>>
>>36189567
Plus, the 1d4chan rules for Music already give +2 to a designated roll on TN20. If it's +1 additionally that's more balanced.
>>
>>36189605
Right, missed that bit. Okay, so...Rally Cry is a stacked bonus on top of what's already used?

So with Rally Cry it becomes TN10 grants +1, TN20 grants +3, TN25 grants +4, and TN30 grants +5 to a roll. Also, it's just anyone who can hear Hannah, other people don't need to join in.
>>
>>36189674
Oh, TN 15 should be the +2 bonus.
>>
Is the ETA for the playtest still at 3 hours?

>It turns out that the complications from birthing a beastling with fur, claws and horns leaves Belle unable to conceive or bear any more children.

>Gaston forever after blames Clarisse for "killing his sons" and never stops hunting her for this imagined crime, either by himself or through proxies.
>>
>>36191069

Can't he just find another mother for them?
>>
>>36191069
God, that's dark. Not that it's a bad thing.

However, is Belle the kind of girl who would have sex with a man (or beast) that she did not love? Remember, Belle realizing she loved Adam is what made him human again.

We do know that she has a fur fetish though, as evidenced from the final line she speaks of the movie that was cut in the last stages of development. "You should grow a beard."
>>
>>36191201

He could, but that would be a logical and rational thing to do, and just look at what he went through to get Belle back from the Beast in the first place. He's had his sights set on this girl for a long, long while, and may have had the idea of his perfect lineage mothered by Belle in his head for just as long.

>>36191202

I'm not sure about how this love triangle might have come about, but the idea of Gaston hunting his beastling stepdaughter for something she had absolutely no control over really is dark, but like you said, not in a bad way.
>>
>>36191202
Perhaps she wasn't Beast's kid at all. There might have been some lingering effect of the curse on Belle, due to spending so much time around Beast, thus causing her children to be Beastlings.
>>
>>36191481

Then she's really Gaston's daughter, which is even fucking darker.
>>
>>36191535
Exactly. We're blacker than Facilier right now.

>>36191535
Whether she was the Beast's daughter conceived before Gaston killed him or Gaston's daughter cursed by the same gypsy spell, what do you suppose her early life was like? She would either have been sent far, far away to try and hide or forget about her, or was kept under the stairs like an awful family secret while Gaston tried desperately for the sons he wanted.
>>
>>36191645
You want us to make this even darker?
She's got the Inquistion after her too. Gaston knew Belle was a virgin before he made Clarisse and decided to ask Frollo how it happened, since he had no idea. Frollo concluded there was only one possibility: Clarisse is the Antichrist.
So now we have a young girl/beast hybrid, whose father wants her dead and whose mother is brainwashed, who thinks she's a bastard, and who everyone thinks is the Spawn of Satan. We have entered Ultra-Gigganigga levels of blackness.
>>36191694
Gaston hid her under the stairs, I think. She lived in the cellar, and he fed her the scraps from his meals when he had finished eating. Mentioning her name was not allowed. When he realised Belle was infertile, he tried to kill her out of a need for revenge but she escaped.
>>
>>36191728

Sheer darkness / 10, would cry for again.
>>
>>36191728

While I think that may be taking things just a touch too far, I really like the idea of Clarisse as a character that's being hunted on all sides by Gaston as being the Beast that killed his imaginary sons and the Inquisition for simply being a Beast.

If we go off the story of Clarisse's birth that was written earlier, presuming Belle was drugged deeply enough Gaston could have convinced her that the baby did not survive, and could have locked her in the old wine cellars or what have you beneath the stairs while he continued to try for the real family he felt he deserved.
>>
>>36191893
Or we can go on a much 'happier' alternative where he begrudgingly keeps Clarisse and tries to be a caring father while keeping her hidden from Frollo's Inquisition and his buddies at the Huntsman Club.
Highly unlikely to happen, but hey, options.
>>
>>36192189

>Not him raising her and then saying "I am such a good father, that I can teach even my beast kid how to hunt! My offspring is the best of the best, be it human or beasts!"

>No one fathers like gaston
>>
>>36192189

It flies in the face of Gaston's character. The whole point of his existing in the movie was to be a vain and superficial person.
>>
>>36192304
That's why I said 'highly unlikely'. There's only so much grimdark my poor heart can take sometimes.
>>
>>36192229
>Teaches Clarisse all he knows about hunting, tracking, and trapping, raising her like a family secret in a cramped cellar room.

>Feeds her scraps, table leavings and raw game while keeping Belle from realizing that her daughter is still alive.

>Sees this as the perfect way to get back at the Beast and Belle's betrayal while attempting to have some sort of dysfunctional father-daughter relationship with Clarisse.
>>
>>36191069
Gaston isn't exactly victorious if he doesn't the girl and at least one strapping son.
>>
>>36192444

You have a point there. In this situation we'd have to narrow our definition of victory to "killing the beast and getting the girl" rather than "getting everything he wanted."

>Clarisse escapes from her basement dungeon and tries to explore town for the first time before realizing that everyone is not only different than her but is afraid of her.
>She is chased by through the countryside by the Inquisition or hunters with torches and rifles.
>She tries to make heads or tails of what a book is supposed to be.
>She rediscovers the remains of her father's castle and enchanted servants.
>Clarisse tries to find and free her elderly grandfather, wherever he's been hidden away.

See, this is why I preferred the version where she does bear him sons, and they are indeed "strapping", but where they may or may not be "blessed" by Frollo to serve him as super-soldiers at some point in the future. Gives Gaston a proper "win" while embroiling him in the political drama of Europe.

I realize we want some kind of werebear not beast creature but is Belle banging the Beast just because or some gypsy cursing her just for the heck of it honestly make any sense? I mean beast like creatures are cool but let's not overlook plot holes just because we want a character in. How long was Belle locked up in beasts castle? Was she there long enough for stockholm syndrome to kick in?
>>
>>36192977
This is a good point. Gaston isn't really a major player in France, so this way at least he'll get some recognition.
Plus, having Belle as his brainwashed stepford wife seems like a perfect winning condition having been met.
>>
>>36192977
>>36193049

Super-soldier Gaston sons is the best outcome for Gaston considering he is a member of the hunters guild, traveling often to bag big game. His sons being bred for Frollo's purposes fit perfectly since gaston would never notice.
>>
>>36192304
Just change the way he looks at it: he doesn't see Clarisse as the worst possible daughter, he sees her as the best possible dog.

>Who's a good girl? WHO'S A GOOD GIRL?
>... I am.
>YOU ARE!
>I AM! (wags her tail)

It brings up the interesting question of where the threshold is for a Villain being considered to be victorious in this setting. Does it mean that the villain has achieved their every goal? That certain "lose conditions" in the original movies were met somehow? Is it just Rule of Cool at work? It's an interesting question.
>>
>>36193011
It doesn't really make sense. In the film, Belle realizing she loves the Beast results in his transformation into a human, so if their relationship evolved that far and further in this universe, why was he still a Beast?

And why does the curse extend to their daughter? The curse was placed on the Beast to teach him a lesson, but the child is innocent. And we can safely assume that Clarisse is loved at least by her mother, right? So why doesn't that love undo the curse? What conditions would have to be met to undo her curse?

I know you guys like the she-beast idea, but frankly it's not very good: it just doesn't fit very well.
>>
We're probably gonna be raising difficulty of most acts because our playtesting session so far is revealing that beating mooks and making many checks is frighteningly easy. Probably TN22-ish.

>>
>>36193157
>>36193107
>>36193049

Not to try and push the idea too hard, but what about combining the two: this Clarisse is the eldest child, the product of Belle's fling with the Beast, and the big secret kept under the stairs while Stepford Belle mothers a slew more strapping young boys as is Gaston's dream?

>>36193011
If I recall correctly, she was in the castle for quite a while as I believe we saw the seasons change several times over the course of the movie. Any sexual encounter would, necessarily, have to occur just before Gaston attacked and killed the Beast to make the timeframe of Belle's pregnancy work.
>>
>>36193502
Yeah, particularly combat. Stacking bonuses had us making 35+ on decent rolls. As zeroes.
>>
Compromise time

Beast births Clarisse during her captivity in the castle, a result of both Beast and Belle being drugged by the animate furniture therein as a hail-mary effort to lift the curse. ("She'll never love him, but sacreblu, with enough absinthe she will FUCK him, and that might just be enough!") It didn't work, a child was conceived, and Clarisse was born sometime later. The creature was raised and cared for my the furniture people after the Beast was slain by Gaston.

StepfordBelle doesn't remember anything about her captivity, so doesn't remember Clarisse (though perhaps the two meeting might trigger some confusing maternal feelings?) She has borne Gaston his three (soon to be four) sons under the influence of Frollo, as has been discussed.

Thoughts?
>>
>>36193518

My, it perturbs me to see you, Gaston,
Resting on laurels of old.
You haven't hunted in eons, Gaston,
Your trophy wall's bristling with mold.
That news of the She-Beast affects you, good man,
In ways we can only surmise.
But I trust that this speech redirects you, good man,
You have got to pursue a new prize!

No one's proud as Gaston,
No one's loud as Gaston,
No one germinates fear in a crowd like Gaston,
You still brag of your raid on the castle,
Combatting the fiend in its lair,
And you claim you prevailed with no hassle,
But since then you've just sat on your fat derriere.

ALL HUNTERS
Why don't you try, then, Gaston?

Bag five fey beasts!
Bag twelve hellspawn!

CLAYTON
It seems you've gone soft, so you'd best prove us wrong!

ALL HUNTERS
No one hunts like Gaston,
Picks off runts like Gaston,

CLAYTON
No one loses in contests to Muntz like Gaston.
Though he's hailed as a provincial savior-

GASTON
A position I've earned through my deeds!

CLAYTON
He's shown nothing but selfish behavior.

GASTON
That's wrong!
I'm just what the common man desperately needs!

ALL HUNTERS
No one aims like Gaston,
Targets game like Gaston,

CLAYTON
No one tries to avoid any blame like Gaston.

GASTON
I am certain you slobs are exaggerating.

ALL HUNTERS
Why don't you try, then, Gaston?

GASTON
When I was at home, I protected the town
From all manner of threats, great or small.
But now I seek thrills from behemoths world 'round
And the She-Beast can't matter at all!

ALL HUNTERS
No one's brash as Gaston,
Makes a splash like Gaston,

CLAYTON
No one's ego's at risk of a crash like Gaston.

GASTON
I'm above all your meaningless flagellating.

ALL HUNTERS
Why don't you try?
Gaston!

And the reprise.

GASTON
McLeach, I'm afraid I've been thinking.

MCLEACH
About time you started.

GASTON
I know.
But I've heard of a monster in Scotland,
Who can slaughter his prey with one blow.
Now pursuit of that She-Beast is lacking
In the face of the mighty Mor'du.
Though the power and speed of the bear is immense,
My superior wit will pull through!

If I... (whisper)

CLAYTON
Yes?

GASTON
Then we... (whisper)

CLAYTON
No! Would he...

GASTON
(whisper) Guess!

CLAYTON
Now I get it!

GASTON & CLAYTON
Let's go!
No one dares like Gaston,

GASTON
Sets up snares like Gaston,

CLAYTON
No one tangles with mystical bears like Gaston!

GASTON
And the beast I will soon be decapitating!

ALL HUNTERS
My what a guy!
Gaston!

Don't look at him, you'll spoil de mood
Possible he wants you too
And not just for dinner

Ain't that sad

>Hadn't even considered the possibility of her being born while Belle is still in the Beast's castle. That might actually work out better for a family secret + legitimate male heirs type of dynamic.
Gaston can still hunt the "She-Beast" though he probably just assumes it's another of the same sort of creature, and has never had reason to suspect she has any relation to Belle. Maybe on one encounter he gets a good look at her eyes, and her eyes look just like Belle's and it bothers him, but he just files it away in the "things to ignore because they don't fit my worldview" file along with the idea that Belle doesn't really love him and that it is a bit strange that his three-year-old is oddly good at throwing knives at things.

Interesting story: I went to school for animation and one of my professors was an extremely disgruntled Disney employee who worked at the studio during that era. According to him the change from Journey to the Center of the Earth to Atlantis was literally the result of a night of binge drinking by the executives.

Also, you know all the weird sex shit that showing up in Disney movies during that era? That was only the stuff that wasn't found in time. There was a ton of vulgar shit that got caught at varying stages of the animation process. Apparently early tests were full of tits popping out of dresses in the background and shit like that.

I think the curse does that because it was intended to spite Beast even after he turns human. His children would always be monsters, just to remind him. Of course, they didn't anticipate that somebody who fell in love with the Beast would end up living with somebody else.
>>
>>36193366
This is why her being raised by Belle works better. Brainwashed mother incapable of truly loving her + Fucking Gaston as a father = Curse not getting broken. Oh, and since you're currently in the Grand Diocese or whatever it's called, everyone else hates you as well.
