Welcome to Academy City. The time is evening, weather is clear and the date is December 20.

You are Kyril Torikov. Or you were Kyril Torikov. It was hard to say. Legally Kyril Torikov was dead. He had been pronounced dead on August 29. So how was it, that a few months later that an individual such as yourself was standing here? Your memory was spotty and you didn’t have many clues to go on. Brain damage, you were told. It wasn’t surprising. There had been a gap between when Kyril had died and when he had been pronounced dead. Setting aside whether you were really Kyril or not, the body was his and you were in it. After all, this was the City of Science and it wasn’t impossible to bring you back through Medicine. You just thought that maybe Kyril wasn’t originally like this.

They brought you back but not perfectly. It was probably deliberate. The fact that you were brought back held unsettling implications. You were, or Kyril was, a piece on the board of a greater game. There was a reason they needed him, needed you. Through some circumstance, whatever they had in store for you was disrupted. That was a few hours ago, just after lunch. In just a few short hours you’ve come a long way from a very confused nobody to just another person trying to make their way in the world. You needed a place to live, money to pay for it, basically the bare essentials for living. That was a problem easily solved. Identity issues aside you didn’t really have a long term goal. For now nobody was coming after you and you weren’t exactly busy so it was probably the best idea to figure it out while you still could. Still first things first,

For one that doesn't really want to read 59 threads.. atleast RIGHT NOW. anything I should know? I see that we're playing the MC's name again. and seem to be him, And I assume We have his memory.

As of right now, you owned nothing. The clothes you were currently wearing were looted off some dead body in laboratory that had caught fire. No, not even the weird helmet you were wearing. That had been looted from the lab’s armoury, among other things. It probably wasn’t a great idea to go walking the streets with the face of a dead man. The disembodied voice told you that.

To be fair the voice had also guided you out of the burning building and even helping you with various things. You just wished it didn’t call you ‘nii-chan’. It was a girl’s voice. It also liked to laugh a lot at your questions. You were pretty sure it was trying to lead you somewhere. How else had it known that the helmet would interface with the strange jack at the back of your neck? Now your sight was augmented with some kind of HUD, albeit in minimal. Displayed was a set of coordinates, presumably a destination you should be heading towards. When you asked, the voice had said,

“Yes, if you want we can get you some work nii-chan.”

There was that, or more unsavoury opportunities. You were pretty sure there was a market for manual labour with no questions asked. All you needed to do was find some opportunities.

You didn’t walk far but it gave you a better view of life on the streets. Anti-Skill and Judgement patrolled more frequently. People kept to themselves. Even the street kids were a rare sight. You almost forgot this was a city at war, a sitting war perhaps, but still, a war. Thankfully you weren’t accosted though some of the Anti-Skill acknowledged your presence with a nod. Strange, you thought. What did you do to earn such treatment?

You arrived at an old office building that looked to have recently been closed down. The power was still on and a few computers were still running. It was finally after navigating the various corridors did you arrived at a server room. Or, it used to be. Now it was staffed by one blonde twin-tailed little girl. A Judgement armband was around one of her sleeves and she worked against the glare of various monitors.

“Ah.”

The sound echoed in your helmet. She clicked a button on her keyboard to get rid of it.

“Kyril nii-chan, you made it.”

You weren’t surprised. In a city where children had superpowers and talents of various kinds, your mysterious benefactor being what she was really was par for the course.

“You’re the voice,” you stated.

“Yup, that’s me, Kihara Nayuta,” she replied cheerfully, “I heard you were looking for work.”

You didn’t introduce yourself. She already knew who you were. You were looking for a job and she was offering. Mischievous smile or not, you,

“Who are you?”

“Kihara Nayuta,” she repeated, “But that’s not what you were meaning right?”

“Why should I trust you?”

“I represent the Student Welfare Agency,” she puffed up, “Or at least a part of it. Someone has to take care of the Child Errors right?”

“So you run an orphanage.”

“Not just any orphanage,” she went on, “Your orphanage.”

It probably wasn’t the only reason she was talking to you. It might also explain why she called you ‘nii-chan’.

“Technically I own it, seeing I donate most of the funding but that’s just a detail. Didn’t you want to ask about that job?”

“What’s the catch?”

“Well nothing outside your jurisdiction.”

You didn’t follow.

“You don’t know,” she stated, not asked, “You don’t remember anything? Wow, they really screwed the pooch huh? Whatever, bend over.”

Yeah, you were lost.

“I said, bend, over.”

Your arms suddenly felt heavy. So heavy in fact, that it glued itself to the ground. The little girl clambered over your back, fiddling with something on the back of your helmet.

And just like that, it clicked. You weren’t just Kyril Torikov. You were also HsCC-02 VERDICT, a prototype weapon designed to combat Code M. Registered as a ghost student of Nagatenjouki, you were also part of Judgement Branch Office 49. It was the same branch as Nayuta’s. You were instrumental in the Fiasco of Endymion, albeit in a reduced state.

“That’s why you don’t deploy a prototype before it was even close to Alpha-testing,” she spoke to herself.

Your HUD started filling up. Overall Combat Efficiency was at 100%. The cause of your current immobility was a field of force localised around your arms which acted in concert with gravity. Seeing as that described your Ability, something must be influencing it. Outside of machinery, which you dismissed, the only other culprit could be Nayuta herself. The recommended course of action was to wait.

“There all done,” she hopped off your back.

You regained control of your arms.

“Don’t do that again,” you only said.

“I’ll give you warning,” she replied cheerily.

Your arms, and lower right leg, were some carbon-fibre ceramic combination you couldn’t even begin to guess at. It was almost the same kind of material used in other Hard Science equipment. They were controlled by your Ability but otherwise were pretty much the same as any other human arm. Though you suspect that punching through walls and a snake-like grip of over 200kg was a bit more than human.

“Anyway, back to the job,” she sat down on her chair again, “We’ve got suspected Code M smugglers out in the 10th, again. Or, and this is from the top, we need you to provide security for an upcoming conference.”

“I get a choice?”

“Well you can’t be in two places at once,” she explained.

You decided to hit the smuggling ring.

“Right, we’ll get you a ride right away,” Nayuta merely tapped a few keys on her keyboard.

As you were waiting you also recalled why you were asking for work in the first place.

“By the way, where am I staying now?” you asked her.

“Oh right, your lab did catch fire after all, have any preferences?”

You didn’t really.

“Well right now your documentation’s a mess so short of making a whole new identity for you, and it’s not really worth the trouble, I haven’t gotten around to that yet,” she admitted, “How about you finish the job first and if you come back in one piece we’ll get right on that.”

That sounded reasonable. A couple honks downstairs signalled the arrival of your ride. Bidding farewell to Nayuta for now, you went to meet your driver.

It was an African-American with an afro. He had an Anti-Skill badge hanging from the waist and a ballistic vest was partially obscured by his jacket. Behind him was a red sports car, a 2012 Camaro. The front end looked like it had been replaced.

“VERDICT?”

You nodded.

“Benjamin, or Ben-jii, if want,” he offered a hand, “I’ll be in your care, as they say around here.”

“Same.”

“Ow man, you got a good grip.”

“Apologies.”

He waved it off. You were off and heading towards the address in the 10th at a subdued pace. The radio was playing some old song.

“So I know a Code M altercation can get, uh, violent, but you need to promise me something alright?” he suddenly spoke.

“Those are good rules,” you replied, “If not for a fatal flaw.”

“And it is?”

“Out of a population of 2.3 million in this city, 1.8 million are children,” if he wanted to protest, you didn’t let him, “Your orders are acknowledged, even I cannot guarantee it, Ben-jii.”

The older Anti-Skill officer let out a breath of relief.

“Thanks, it means a lot to me.”

The car pulled up to a multi-storeyed parking lot.

“The item is a shield,” Ben-jii spoke as he parked, “It’s called Aias the Unconquered. That’s all we know so be careful. I’ll wait for you here until you’re done alright?”

With a nod, you left him and went inside. It was dark. The power was out but it was still packed with cars. Thankfully your helmet switched to the low-light filter and you got a better sight picture. The deal, as you found, was taking place on the third floor. There were three individuals. There was a young girl, middle school aged at most, clutching a broad and flat package. That, you presumed, was the shield. The other two was a high school boy who wore an eye patch and an albino woman in some maroon get up. If you were sneaking, you weren’t sneaky enough.

They saw, or heard, you coming. That was why Eye Patch was the first to move. You couldn’t make it out from the distance you were at but the helmet had a lip-reading function.

“Change of plans,” he grabbed Girlie and produced a gun, “Get rid of him.”

Albino turned fully towards to you and produced a small knife. As if you could be intimidated by such a thing. CADRE loaded up basic CQC countermeatures. Eye Patch started backing away with Girlie, the latter of whom was looking more than just a trifle terrified. CADRE pre-loaded hostage contingencies. Still it was mainly your decision to focus on,

You paid more attention to Eye Patch. He held a gun, and thus was more dangerous to you currently. That he had a hostage, who in turn, was clutching the shield in question.

“Stay where you are,” Eye Patch shouted in your direction.

CADRE estimated a 30% of him hitting you, given the factors arrayed against him. Briefly, you slipped on the Code M filter. The package was enveloped in a yellow outline, the Albino, in red. Before you could consider things further, the Girlie stomped on Eye Patch’s foot and escaped his grasp. With a pained cry, his aim was thrown off, negating any chance of him hitting you at all as his gun discharged in to the ceiling. Girlie continued to run, swinging and knocking the knife away from Albino as she ran past and ducked in to a row of cars.

Albino followed as Eye Patch brought his weapon under control again. By the time he did, you had ducked behind a car. Broken class showered the floor as his shots struck the car windows across from you. One of the rounds had struck a side mirror, which you used to keep track of his position. Whether you wanted to or not, you were now stuck dealing with Eye Patch. He advanced slowly, his pistol held steadily in two hands. Your best bet was probably to ambush him. You also remembered you had something in your pocket that you had looted from the lab earlier today. It was,

Code M = magic user. Looks like Kyril got turned into a mage hunter and WWIII is more interesting in ACACQverse.
>>
>>36168887
That last quote implies that either AC has gotten really good at messing with magic, or that they are somehow able to control VERDICT's eyes. Neither of which is a good thing.
>>
>>36168979
Kyril's manavision worked via reformatted nerves. While it was created through magic, the actual use and maintenance of manavision didn't actually use magic. By studying Kyril's body, they could easily figure out how to make an artificial mana vision system thing, because AC is fucking broken.
>>
>>36168979
I don't have a problem with our magevision being more controlled. Sometimes we would see shit that we couldn't process mentally

It was an old pistol but also a familiar one. You didn’t know why. What you did know was that Eye Patch was bearing down on your position and if you didn’t do something soon, you would end up reflecting official records. That is, you’d be dead. Unlike your arms, and that little bit on your right leg, you were entirely flesh and bone.

CADRE, the ever helpful plug-in, recommended relocating and estimated a 70% chance of evading enemy fire given the circumstances. Or you could stay put and fight from where you were. There was less chance of running in to the other two. The less complications there was, the better. CADRE estimated a 30% chance to hit with a snap shot, almost triple if you took your time to aim. The second option would expose you, all but guaranteeing getting shot but it probably wouldn’t be a fatal hit.

Hey Bored in case you didn't know moot made a thing that lets you know how many people are in a thread. Apparently we've got 31 people here.
>>
>>36170188
It's not how many people are here, it's how many unique IPs have posted in the thread. It doesn't count lurkers and it doesn't go down if someone who posted leaves.

A closer thing to say would be that we have had up to 31 people vote or say something in the last five and a half hours, though it is likely less. I know that I almost always end up posting from my phone at least once for quests I like if they run for more than four hours because I usually need to go do something and end up checking the thread while I'm out. If you were to add in the lurkers, though, the number would go way up.

Well, CADRE did recommend relocating. That’s what you did as you kept a car between you and Eye Patch at all times. To be fair, Eye Patch came close to hitting you once or twice. You definitely felt a round or two whizz too close for comfort. It was when he ran out of bullets and ducked to reload did you get your chance. Your own double tap caught him right in centre mass. It was comical how he flew backwards against the car behind him. CADRE wasn’t fooled. There was no blood. Eye Patch wore body armour. Of course with you holding the initiative, and five more rounds to back it up, he wasn’t going anywhere. You didn’t even need to tell him to drop the weapon. He surrendered of his own accord.

Of course, as soon as your little conflict was done, it looked like Girlie’s was too. It was a shame that she was being held hostage, again. Held against her throat was a blade that was made of blood. At least CADRE thought it was a blade. It was hard to describe as the blood was constantly in motion. It did make an impression when pressed against her neck though.

“Let us leave peacefully,” Albino spoke as if she had a parched throat, “Or I will bleed the girl dry.”

CADRE could tell she was up for negotiation, but beyond that it didn’t have much else to offer. Then again, a hostage was only effective if you really cared about them.

“Killing you is not my objective, but neither is keeping her alive. Leave the girl and the item, then go.”

Albino looked strained. It was almost as if she was hoping you would have forgotten about the shield.

“That is acceptable,” it was Eye Patch who spoke for her.

You kept your gun trained on him as Albino handed the shield back to Girlie and sent her your way. Once she basically hid herself behind yourself, you let the other two leave. It was a trade. You got a Code M item, a new gun, and saved the life of a girl, no matter how suspect she was. All you had to do was let a Code M walk free but it wasn’t like it was hard to track or recognise Code M.

As for Girlie, her name was Ilija, no last name. You figured she was a Child Error, pressed in to a desperate situation. Strangely, you couldn’t quite place her school uniform. If you wanted to interrogate her, it was going to have to wait. She didn’t look like she’d talk given how scared out of her wits she looked. Your troubles weren’t over yet. As you descended to the street, Ben-jii was waiting by his car. He also had a yellow outline and he was leaning on the hood and smoking a cigarette.

“You,” you started, “You are Code M.”

He regarded you casually.

“What about it?”

A cloud of yellow overlaid itself over the smoke as he exhaled. He pointed as his badge.

“I’m a legit part of Anti-Skill,” he continued, “Call your girl Nayuta if you’re ain’t sure.”

Sure enough, his story checked out, but that didn’t mean he was trustworthy. You already let one Code M get away today.

“I won’t be offended if you don’t trust me anyway,” he said, “but it looks like the little lady could use a ride home.”

Now that you knew, you weren’t going to let him out of your sight. The shield, which you thought was a hoplon, sat beside you in the back seat. It served to keep the item with you as well as conceal your hands. Sitting in the back also allowed you to keep an eye on Ben-jii and Ilija without having to turn around. If Ben-jii was going to do anything suspicious, he didn’t, even as you dropped by one of the local Anti-Skill offices. He was quick to drive off though but you were told he had a busy schedule. He was an associate professor of Criminology at one of the universities apparently. As for Ilija, she was taken in for questioning, which you left to professionals. Something about your faceless mask being intimidating, or so one of the officers told you. You could pick up a transcript later anyway.

The time is now evening, the weather is chilly and the date remains unchanged.

You received a call from Nayuta as soon as you were done.

“Thanks for your hard work today nii-chan.”

You had a feeling you knew why she was calling.

“Where’s my pay?” you asked instead.

You opted for the nice place next to Sakugawa Middle School. It was as Nayuta said, it wasn’t like you couldn’t pay for it.

“Alright, here’s the address, I’ll see you soon.”

With that she hung up and you started making your way to your new place. It was approaching curfew. Your room was at the end of the hall, meaning you only had one neighbour. Then you realised you didn’t have the keys either, despite being able to waltz in through the foyer unmolested. It was a bit awkward when your neighbours made it back. Thankfully, the white haired twins didn’t say anything as they came back from whatever day they had. You were about to introduce yourself when Nayuta arrived.

“Yoohoo nii-chan,” she greeted loudly, keys jangling as she skipped down the hall.

The stare you got from your neighbours didn’t last too long. They had swiftly opened their door before slamming it rather emphatically like they wanted to have nothing to do with your supposed paedophilia. Not even close-in-age exemptions could excuse the fact that Nayuta was a primary school kid.

“Huh?” she held her chin with her Index.

You just asked snatched the keys out of her other hand.

Once inside, you had to admit, the place was nice. It had an actual king sized bed, a good desk, separate kitchen area, a generous closet and bathroom. There was even a bookshelf. Some of titles seemed odd, especially with an 18+ warning on some of the spines.

“Fowl Gods, Omnibus Edition?” you asked.

“Well I was planning to move in when I graduated from Primary School,” Nayuta replied innocently.

You changed topic,

“It’s a nice place.”

“Of course I picked it out myself,” she reached in to her backpack, “Now before I give these to you, I want know what you’re going to do with it.”

It was your new file, your new identity.

“Isn’t it obvious?” you asked, “I’m going to

As you were, you knew next to nothing about yourself. The human memory was a rather robust thing. You’ve only forgotten about yourself because your brain temporarily stopped functioning. That’s why you needed the files. It was going to help jog your memory. It was going to help you recover that which you had lost. Nayuta handed you the files.

“You know,” she said, “You’re in a strange legal position nii-chan.”

That went without saying.

“So I hope you’ll get your past in order quickly before you have problems in the future.”

With a hiss and a sharp click, your removed the helmet and set it on the desk. Looking out in to the night sky, your face was reflected in the window as you spoke,

“I need to grow back my eyebrows.”

“Sure you do,” she giggled and left.

Now comes the hard part. Making money.
>>
>>36174121
It's simple, keep doing what we're good at. Which in this case is hunting magicians.
>>
>>36174121
We really should build up contacts while this shit goes on.
>>
>>36174121
just stay away from bipedal robots
>>
>>36174151
I"m honestly kind of hoping we go on a Magician hunting arc for a while and build up a decent life. Just for the moment when Asuka shows her face and Kyril now has to figure out how to use the resources he built here to help out.
>>
So I wonder what caused a fire and killed scientists at the lab we were in?I hope we didn't go on a rampage and then lose our memory of it
>>
>>36174193
Bipedal robots will now cause unreasonable fear in poor Kyril.
>>
I"m kind of hoping we will get to see Kyril from Sagaras perspective. Just to see if they noticed it was him.
>>
Any chance this quest could have mormon mages?

You are Kongou Mitsuko, and somehow, things have taken a turn for the worst. Your friend, and senior, Kudou Asuka, had been missing for most of the second semester. The official reason behind that was a medical emergency. You weren’t stupid. Academy City had one of the best hospitals, doctors and medical technology in the world. What was it that required your dearest friend to leave the city? In all honesty you had no idea. However there was no changing the fact that Asuka was now back. Your friend and roommate had become more taciturn, more withdrawn. She spoke less, but when she did, her remarks were just as cutting and sharp as always. Not that she would ever have a reason to.

There were few within Tokiwadai that would dare approach the infamous Dictator. Her presence was oppressive. Being in close proximity to her seemed to stifle one’s breath. Clairvoyants among the populace measured the radius of said effect to be five metres. Their description of the interior wasn’t pleasant. It was like a dome where light dimmed, the air stank of iron oxide and the surfaces around her were flaked with red rust. There were only few people who were unaffected by it, namely her mother and Misaka-san. They were the ones you sought. Whether their answers were the ones you wanted was another matter.

The answer was simple. The both of you were friends with the Ace of Tokiwadai. Some would say that the Ace and the Dictator were anything but. You knew better. Well you hoped you did. You couldn’t explain their friendly spars otherwise. Their friendship was so deep it left craters in the track and field whenever they were done. Most considered it an unpleasant thing, what with the horrid screeching of steel on steel and crackling of lightning. It happened regularly enough that the school had finally gotten around to automating the repair process. Still, it took a bit of effort but you finally located the Ace, that is, Misaka Mikoto. It was by one such track and field that you found her.

“Huh? Something wrong with Kudou?”

Though she was a little rough around the edges, you held Misaka Mikoto as a dear friend so you forgave her unkempt appearance and manner of speech. It looked like the Ace had just been put through the ringer. On her lap lay a sword. She must have been tired from sparring.

“Uh, I wouldn’t call it that,” the Ace admitted, “I guess the both of us are just using each other.”

You snapped your fan, prompting the Ace to continue hurriedly.

“Not in that way,” she sputtered, “I guess we’re letting off some steam by, uh, sparring.”

You supposed that it was so.

“Yeah, I mean, I think she took it the hardest. When Aniki, I mean, Kyril, left us.”

Ah yes, the sudden disappearance of Kudou Asuka’s lover would do it. The Ace started shivering.

“Ever since she got back, it’s like she’s possessed. Smack her down and she keeps coming. I’m trying not to hurt her but she just won’t stop.”

You left the Ace to her muttering as you pondered how to further investigate this development. Perhaps you could consult with your acquaintances in Judgement. Now who to approach?

The two of you had always been at odds. It was true. You found Shirai Kuroko was much too forward and uncouth, not to mention her ear grating voice. Still, she was, grudgingly enough, someone you could respect. If only she could say the same of you. Regardless of that, she was part of Judgement and as much as she could dislike it, she was duty-bound to aid you.

“Hah?”

Oh God her voice.

“You want to find more about her boyfriend?”

That is exactly what you wanted.

“Well aside from being dead, what else did you want to know about him?”

Oh. Ooooooh. That put a rather big crimp in your plans. Surely that wasn’t all though. There must be some other way you could investigate more without stepping on more landmines.

“Didn’t he have, uh, friends?”

“If you’re talking about those no-good dirty scoundrels then I haven’t a clue,” Shirai dismissed them out of hand, “But surely you’ve heard the rumours?”

Rumours of the Dictator you suspected.

“See, even you have brain if you could but use it.”

So how did these new rumours go? Surely it was not some regurgitated slander that passed for gossip.

“Hmph, I assure you that my sources are reliable.”

Ah, so straight from the source herself, you mused.

“They say she spends her free time in the Strange,” Shirai continued none the wiser, “As you know, School District 10 has become, well, a slum basically. Apparently when asked about it, the Dictator said she had an appointment with the Slumlord of the Strange. Apparently she’s engaged in some kind of blood sport, though no one knows what it is. Then she takes tea with a foreign twin-tailed she-devil.”

You wanted to bring your palm to your face but at least you had something more to investigate now. Thanking her for her time, you chose to track down the,

Well nothing spelled out a mystery than a foreign She-Devil, if Shirai’s words were anything to go by. It wasn’t hard to find the café. While eavesdropping was rather rude, you hoped that she would forgive you just this once.

“I do hope you’ve gotten rid of Joyeuse, it is far too much trouble keeping it with the Slumlord of the Strange.”

“Don’t worry Riko, I’ve given to someone reliable,” Asuka assured, “Wanko-chan won’t have any reason to complain now.”

“Your mother?”

“No, I gave it to the Railgun.”

They both laughed at that.

“You gave Joyeuse, the one that restarted the war with les Anglais, to the Railgun?” her companion asked for confirmation, “Hah! That’s priceless.”

“I aim to please,” though once the laughter died down she asked, “What did you need me for today Riko?”

“I was thinking. We are missing someone in our merry band,” he companion finally said, “You are Goemon, and dear Tadakuni is Fujiko while I myself am Lupin. We’re missing a Jigen.”

“A markswoman? I suppose Kyousuke is not nearly as feminine enough to pull it off.”

“Well I’ve good things about the Sisters,” she started until Asuka glared at her, “I wasn’t thinking about stealing one of them. No rather, I’m going to steal their successor, the WORST series.”

“Hmmmm, then I suppose we’re only waiting for Fujiko to show up. You know how he just loves dropping in uninvited.”

“Actually I’m sitting next to Mitsuko-chan.”

Hiiiii. A boy appeared next to you. You weren’t paying that much attention anyway but surely you would have heard him drag the chair and seating himself. Then Asuka’s gaze fell on you. Her eyes were clear, like a big game hunter forever chasing the thrill of a hunt. Sadly, you didn’t think you measured up as the most dangerous game. She turned to her companion.

“What do you think?”

“I’d say she’d make a great Jigen.”
