That smell.

The faint aroma of morning breakfast permeates the shrine. It's a welcome scent that you've been waking up to the past couple of days. Usually at dawn, a certain serpent-shaped doctor has been kind enough to cook for you in the mornings.
You've missed sleeping at the shrine. It feels like you've spent more time at a castle that you didn't even like that much than spending time here. You much prefer waking up to the smell of breakfast every morning.

You are Jack Albator, talented seafarer, dashing hero, and recently far too tired for your own good. It's nice to be home after spending so much time in Gallete. Even though you have found ways to cause trouble for yourself in the meantime. Last night was a weird experiment involving a little girl and a big axe. One that, while you don't regret doing, is something that you'll think twice about before doing again.

Slowly, you feel yourself sitting upright and rubbing your eyes. You do a brief survey of your surroundings just to make sure everything is still real, which has become a kind of morning routine for you ever since you were summoned to this world.
Which means you're just in time to notice a blonde ball of fluff curled around a smaller green ball of fluff. Both of which are sleeping in the futon next to you.
You don't normally say this about anything, especially about Atsuko, but that's pretty damn adorable.

Slowly, you stand up and quietly make your way out of the shrine. You don't want to disturb Atsuko or Keiko when they're clearly sleeping comfortably.
You step outside to see Madeleine cooking breakfast.

"Oy!" You call out to her.
"Hey, Jack!" She coils her fungus-covered tail around behind her. "You look awfully happy this morning, what's the occasion?"
"Oh, nothin' much. Just saw something that made me smile. More importantly, we have important business today, Lass."
She looks at you confused, "Important business?"

"Aye, Today is the day we find out how to fix your skin." You smile at her.

She looks back at you with shock.
"What did you have in mind?"

>"The Ocean! It's harsh on the skin, but even harsher on mushrooms."
>"Town, you haven't tried looking there, yet. There might be something there that can help."

You know there is a way to cure pretty much anything that's wrong with the skin. Especially anything that's on the surface.
"I know something that can cure any type of skin, seawater. There's a bay not too far from here we can visit." You fill your plate with food before sitting back down.

The tip of her tail slowly slides up and scratches the side of her face.
"I always thought it was too caustic for skin treatment."

You laugh, "Seawater is great for almost anything. As long as you don't drink it."
"..Where did you learn this?" She asks, still very skeptical.

"My ol' Capt'n of course. I'm certain he's seen every disease known to man. Every time he would treat it the same way. And he's lived longer than most of the finest doctors of my time! So I think he knows what he's talking about."
It's true; anytime a skin-deep disease befell him or a crew member, he would always tell them to a dip in the water. The salt is good for the body.

Madeleine gets herself a plate of food and starts eating, you can tell she's not really into this just yet. Maybe she doesn't think seawater will do anything?

"Hey, Lass. If you want, we could bring someone along."

You have a rather good idea on who should go. Two of them are laying inside of the shrine, one of them is a princess who was whining about you never taking her anywhere.

You sit back and look at Madeleine. She shifts uncomfortably as she becomes aware of your staring.
"What are you thinking?" She says, she tries to act as if your staring isn't bothering her.

"You know what's best about the beach? Alcohol!"
Wait, that's not what you meant to say.

"I mean- celebration! Ha. My old crew used to have a party every time we landed on shore somewhere. We could go get some of the Lasses at the castle and Aligot, maybe even get some of the-"

She coils her tail apprehensively, and is suddenly very focused on her food.
"What? Lass? Is something wrong?"
"Jack, you know how I feel about my tail."
"Eh?"

"You know.. I just don't really want to show it around to everyone. I mean.. I don't even really know most of the people at the castle that well."

You didn't quite think of that, really all you were thinking about were the booze and the women.
Not that you can be blamed for thinking of that, booze and women are important.

"Alright, that's fair enough." You finish the rest of the food on your plate, "I guess I should have asked you first to begin with."

She takes your plate and heads toward the river.
"No, no, it's fine. Truthfully, I didn't think you would try to help at all."
"..Really Lass? You think I would break my own word?"
She turns around, only managing to whisper a "Maybe?" at you.

"Your words, they pierce me so, Lass."

"I need to pack a few things, maybe you should get your Cercle ready before we leave."
"My what again?"
"Your bird, that's how we're going to get there, right?"

Oh right, your bird, ah heh.
"Yar! Of course, I'll go fetch her right now."

--

Gently, you slide the door of the shrine open. The fluffy mass has shifted slightly, the orange ball of fluff has decided to pull the green mass of fluff closer to herself.
Now is a good time as any.

"(Har, Atsuko.)" you whisper, hopefully not loud enough to wake up Keiko.

Gently, her leg shifts and slides over the small matted cloth she's laying on. Twitching one ear, the Lass makes a annoyed squeak.
"mm?"
"(Hay, Atsuko, I'm borrowing the bird with Madeleine, we'll be back in a few hours.)"
"umm"

"(Yar?)"
"where's keiko? oh here's keiko"
She pulls the green Lass even closer to herself, if it's even possible.
"(Can I take the bird, though?) "
"umm."

She shifts slightly,
"okay camille, bring it back before dark, be sure to wash it when you get back."

That's good enough for you!
Gently, you slide back out of the shrine and close the door behind you.

You pack enough booze for the road, and some dry tack for lunch.
Really, you're not sure you need anything else.

The bird, Mimi you think her name was? She isn't being very cooperative, but you're able to bribe her with some food long enough to throw a saddle on her and lead her behind the shrine.

That's when you notice Madeleine's pack. She seems to be packing for a journey instead of a morning trip. The large pack bulges with clothes and provisions.

"I thought we were just going for a short trip, Lass."
"Oh, I know."
She packs a few empty vials into the pockets along the sides of the pack.

"Err, I just wondered, that's all."
"Why? Is it a problem?"

That's when you realize that you're about to question the packing decisions of a woman. You know better than to go down that route.

"Nope! Just wonderin'. C'mon bird, let's get this on your back."
Mimi yanks her head back and jerks around your arms. Madeleine watches this unfold with genuine curiosity.

"Jack, this is your Cercle, right?"
"Well! Sorta. Atsuko and I share it."
"So you've ridden it before, right?"
"Yar! With Atsuko."

The bird yanks it's reigns out of your hands and promptly walks several paces away. It starts grazing just out of arms reach.

You can hear Madeleine try to contain her laughter.
Madeleine carefully slithers along the grass, and gently grabs the reins.
"You have to be gentle with Cercles, Jack."

She leads it over to the pack and clicks her hand in front of it's face. Obediently, it sits down and stretches it's neck outward.

"You're a finicky bird."
"I think she's really nice!" Madeleine is beaming as she loads her pack on.

Gently, you let Madeleine slither onto the beasts back, you hop on behind her as she coils around you to fit onto the saddle.

You were thinking of asking how she was able to do that, but you're more than aware of your current status as the enemy of the local wildlife. So you just figure this is more of something that comes with the job.

You can feel Madeleine shifting the weight of her tail to fit on the bird. Every time she does, another length of it seems to wrap around you.
This is going to be a very awkward ride for you if that keeps up.

"Har, Madeleine. why didn't you try the ocean sooner? Gallete is closer to the ocean than Biscotti is."
She looks back at you with worry, "Why? How long is it going to take to get there?"
"According to Aligot, it's a two hour trip."

You both walk through the dew-covered woods, in the distance you can hear birds waking up and starting their morning foraging.
"..No Jack, I never went to the ocean. I'm not much of a fighter and I didn't really want to let anyone in on my problem to escort me there."

You can hear small animals walk through the underbrush, nearby some glowing animals gently recede into the safety of the forest canopy.

"Why would ye need to be a fighter, Lass?"
She twists her body as best as she can to glare at you with a certain kind of dismay at that response.
"What do you mean? The shore is where the strongest sea life comes to congregate. I've never fought anything like that before, and hopefully never will."

Sea life?

"I'm sure Aligot already told you about that, you did tell him you planned on going to this 'bay', right?"

Your mouth opens, but nothing comes out. You instead focus your attention to the tiny flask in your pocket.

Thanks for the thread everyone, apologies for the short thread today. Hopefully next week will be better.

Also apologies for not handling that decision better, I should have known.

Thank you everyone, and I'll see you next week.
