Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you began delving into the various notes left to you by the Varistha, but were interrupted by monks bearing bad news.

You glance from one monk to the other, absentmindedly channeling just a touch of Water magic to heal their wounds as well as Mortia's. “What exactly would this punishment entail?” You ask, curious. After all, if it's just something minor you don't really see any reason to make a fuss. However, if they intend on tying you to a post and taking the whip to you you're going to raise issue with the treatment.

The monk on your right, the one who had a black eye before you took the time to heal it, speaks up. “Normally the punishment would be decided by the Varistha, but in the absence of either a Varistha or a Siksaka at the temple it will instead be put to a vote among the most senior brothers and sisters.”

You fold your arms in front of your chest, somewhat annoyed that the monk didn't really answer your question. “Well, what could I expect likely punishments to be? How is this thing usually handled? Surely this can't be the first time a brother or sister has gotten into a fight with another; even if it was only indirectly so in my case. Via my 'household' as you seem to put it.”

The other monk, the only one of the three before you who'd been uninjured when they arrived, speaks up instead of his companion. “Well, it depends on the severity. For instance, if a brother or sister kills another they're typically put to death in response. However, this isn't nearly so severe. A few lash marks, some scratches, some bruising. Nothing serious.” How the hell did Mortia give the woman lash marks?

The other monk reluctantly finishes off his companion's little speech. He doesn't seem to think you deserve an explanation. “I'd guess you'll get no worse than sewage duty. Clearing any blockages and generally cleaning out the tunnels which run beneath the temple. Empress knows they're long overdue. However, if the elders are feeling particularly vindictive you might end up before the whipping block.”

>Try to get Mortia's side of the story before anything else.
>Neither of those punishments sound too bad, accept whatever you get.
>Is punishing you for her fuck-up really the best solution here? Insist she take her licks.

I'm sure some anon will post the giant list of things to do when we finally got downtime, but the short of it is that we have a ton of metas/meditation/reading to do, and have had for a long time, so most people want to stay as long as possible.

We haven't had any downtime in ages anyway, shit always hits the fan somehow - hell this might be it this time.

I hope she gets sewage duty.
Also if it has to fall on us, I say we don't have time to be cleaning up sewage. And we pay several commoners for mortia's money very generously to get that shit done.
pay out like 20 gold pieces from her cash to like 15 commoners to get that sewage done in a day. and a down on his luck water vatis to help out.

Oi. Soma. Ever considered getting into Asian food? Asian markets have great stuff for cents. Noodles are literally a buck for a pound. Onions go 5 pounds for a buck, bell peppers for about twice that, chicken at $1.09 for a pound. Toss the noodles into a pot of boiling water for a bit, get them nice and cooked, slap a bunch of whatever vegetables or meat you got in a pan with three teaspoons of oil, stir fry it up, add in the noodles after they're done, and stir fry everything together after adding sauce. My favorite sauce is seven or eight spoons of Hoisin Sauce (and some Sriracha, if you're feeling up for a challenge) Bask in the aroma. Eat hearty for two days afterward with just twenty minutes of prep, six minutes of cooking, and nine bucks of ingredients. It's literally impossible to burn this shit at the recommended seven-six setting temperature on your stove.
>>
Are farmers market really cheaper than normal markets?
What do they sell?
>>
>>36131195
What ever the farmers have that is ripe. Prices are pretty good but veggies aren't really that expensive were I live anyway.

You hold up both hands placatingly. “I think I'd like to take a moment to speak with my companion. Assuming, of course, that's alright with you two.” The one to your right shrugs. The one on your left looks as if he wishes to speak out but doesn't. You take that as your cue to grab Mortia and drag her into your room.

Initially she seems nervous, glancing all about your room as if searching for something. When she apparently doesn't find it she visibly relaxes. When she speaks, her tone is low. Presumably to avoid being overheard by the men outside your room.“Where's that... lizard of yours, then? Did you let it out, or something”

You draw yourself up, offended that she would dare to call your mighty dragon a mere 'lizard'! You keep your voice similarly confined to a whisper as you scold her. “I'll have you know Zahak is no lizard, but a dragon! As for his whereabouts, look down and slightly to your left.”

She does so, and you urge Zahak to emerge from the illusory dome that hides him. His head pops out a moment later, and Mortia lets out a panicked little 'eep!' as she jumps away from it. You have to admit, in conjunction with the look on her face it's sort of cute. If only because you can't imagine how anyone could be terrified of your little Zahak. He's just a baby! Sure, he's equivalent to a moderately large dog in size and he's got a mouth full of sharp, needle-like teeth but those features only add to his cuteness.

You urge Zahak back into his hiding place and he chirps at you, his thoughts transmitting reluctance through the strange connection you share. “Zahak, come now. Papa needs to speak with his friend and she seems quite terrified of you.” You accompany this with a stronger urging for him to duck his head beneath the dome which hides his body. Eventually, he relents. Not without voicing his evident displeasure in the form of hissing and chirping to no end.
(1/3 or 4)
>>
>>36131479
I think he types it up in a notepad first
>>
Once Zahak has hid himself and quieted down, you step between him and Mortia. You hold out your hands in what you hope is a comforting gesture, though it seems to have little effect. “Relax, Mortia. He's harmless, really!”

She's got her back pressed against the wall next to the door, but seems to have relaxed since initially spotting your adoptive son. “Bullshit, he's harmless! I saw what he did to that goat! He could just as easily do it to you or me!”

You roll your eyes. “This coming from the woman who kept with her a wolf and a crow, among innumerable other beast. Why were you so calm around those animals, yet so nervous around my dragon? I'll have you know, it's just as intelligent as any child. Perhaps more so. It can even already talk, to some limited extent.”

Mortia practically hisses in response. “Precisely! It's too clever for its own good! Not to mention it's destined to grow into a twenty foot tall monstrosity bent on world domination!”

You fold your hands in front of your chest, leaning your weight back onto one foot. “Shouldn't that be more cause for companionship between you and the dragon than fear? If I'm not mistaken, your goals are similarly to restore the Rhynian Empire. That too will require world domination.”

She waves a hand dismissively. “That's different! Humans were meant to hold dominion over the world. They've already done so once, and they ought to do so again.”

(2/3 or 4)
>>
You shake your head. “Mortia, Dragons were the first sapient species to dwell on this Earth. They created the Elves, from which all other species descend, as a servant race. I understand that you've been separated from our world for generations, but you're just acting silly.” That's not entirely true, most normal people would likely have similar reactions to Mortia's. However, you don't feel that telling her that would be productive. Regardless, you cut her off before she can argue further. “Now then, what happened that you got in a fight with one of the Sisters? Who was it?”

Mortia steps away from the wall towards you, eyes suddenly focused intently on the floor. She's wearing the dress and cloak you saw her wearing the very first time you encountered her, deep within the swamps outside of The City. Her hair is still disheveled, and knotted with vines of various shapes and sizes. “She started it- really she did! I went down to join the monks for dinner, I intended to sit with Darzi and-” She trails off, seemingly in thought. “Um, the horned woman. I'm afraid I've never bothered to ask her name.”

“Chryssa-” You supply. “-But how does this tie in with you getting in a fight?”

She bothers to look away from her shoes long enough to cast a glare your way. “I'm getting to that! Anyway, as I was saying before someone so rudely interrupted me. One of the women called me over in broken Rhynian and asked if I'd like to sit with them. I didn't really want to, but I saw no reason to refuse. When I got over there they started talking amongst themselves in that weird tongue of yours.” Your language isn't weird, if anything it's simply more elegant than Rhynian could ever hope to be!
(3/4)
>>
Mortia seems to grow angry just recalling the memory of what happened; her hands ball into fist and the vines in her hair seem to coil together like snakes preparing to strike. “They started laughing at me, and when I spoke up against such treatment one of them told me to shut my 'filthy human maw'! Can you believe that? I thought: how dare she insult me?! I'd done nothing to her!”

She seems to be growing just the slightest bit hysterical, but she takes a deep breath and calms herself. When next she speaks, she's regained her typical, vaguely disinterested tone. “I don't really remember what happened, precisely, but I remember being kicked in the head, and I think I might have used the surrounding plant life to strangle one of the women, but they deserved to be put in their place!”

>Though they clearly provoked her, that was no way to respond. Seems you'll really have to suffer through whatever punishment they deliver.
>Mortia was completely within her right! Those women shouldn't have been making fun of her. You'll need to contest any sort of sentence the elders deliver.
>Mortia overreacted but you don't see the need for any punishment more severe than a strict talking to. It's not like she seriously hurt anyone.

You wag a finger at her disparagingly. “That was no way to respond, Mortia. You can't simply attack anyone you please simply because they insulted you.” She opens her mouth to respond but you cut her off. “I will admit they provoked you, and that they deserve some sort of punishment; however, the bulk of the blame lies on your shoulders for this situation and your punishment will fall upon mine.”

She begins to protest, but instead simply sighs wearily. “Very well, I suppose there is sense to what you say. I'm not... yet used to being around other people. In my former home, the only thing that mattered was strength, and I was the strongest there was thanks to the power afforded to me by artifacts and magic. It hasn't sunk in that this place is different, and where once I could act with impunity, here I must be more cautious.”

“I'm sure it's very hard on you,-” You're not sure of that at all. If anything, its sounds a little like she's just upset she's not top dog anymore. If that is the case, she just needs to get over herself. “-but the fact stands you acted out. Now, how will you make this up to me, the one who must suffer because of your actions?”

She looks up, narrowing her eyes at you suspiciously for a moment. You feel a curious sensation, the presence of magic in the air. You can't quite place what's happening. Then Mortia smiles a predatory smile and her voice takes on a sultry tone. “Oh~, I think I know just what to give you...” She trails off, stepping closer to you.

You hold up your hands in mock surrender, but before you can explain that she's misunderstood she speaks again. Her voice has shifted from disinterest to a more high pitched, playful tone. One of her fingers absentmindedly trails its way across your chest. “I'll offer you this, Mikhael~”

When next she speaks her personality once more shifts drastically. Her voice takes on a hard, businesslike edge and her fingernail digs painfully into your skin. “Tutoring. Specifically in Nature magic. From my brief readings on the subject I believe myself to be roughly of 'Grandmaster' level; though I have yet to master some of the more esoteric uses of Nature magic that I read about. To be honest, the library at this temple was rather lacking in books I could actually read. That being said, I can tell my expertise is far more advanced than your own." Some of the playfulness returns to her voice, but only some. "So what do you say? In exchange for you taking a beating for me, I'll teach you to better perceive the secrets of this universe.”

You look down at Mortia warily. You're not sure you trust her entirely, considering the way she's acting. However, it's hard to resist an opportunity to learn from a Grandmaster, even if she's not officially a Grandmaster. In the end, you sigh. “Fine, you have yourself a deal. When can we begin?”

Mortia slaps you on the chest affectionately and steps away, grinning triumphantly. “Knew you wouldn't be able to resist if I tempted you with the opportunity to grow more powerful!” She seems far more pleased than you would've expected. “To think, my mother said I had no talent with people! She said I wasn't subtle enough!”

She clears her throat, calming herself. When next she speaks, she's once more her disinterested self. “We can start whenever you like, Mikhael. The gardens would be the best place to meditate, at least according to the methods I'm familiar with, so it might be best to settle the issue of punishment before we begin.”

You simply nod and step past her to jerk the door open, finding the two monks waiting for you on the other side. The dickish one, the one on your left, speaks. “Have you resigned yourself to your fate, then?”

You step into the doorway, shrugging nonchalantly. “I suppose. When can I expect to hear word of the elder's verdict?” To be honest, you're not particularly worried about either the whipping or mucking out the sewage pipes. Both can be dealt with fairly easily using water magic.

The monk on you right, the more affable of the two, answers your question. “We're to escort you to the atrium, where the trial will be held. Assuming you don't wish to argue your case, it should not take long. The punishment itself will either be scheduled or dealt out immediately. Depending on what it is they choose to sentence you with.”

“Great, lets set off immediately and get this over with then.” You glance over your shoulder. “Mortia, follow me. You ought to at least be present for what ought to be your trial.” She frowns, but doesn't protest. You step through the doorway and wait for Mortia to follow you out before shutting the door firmly and letting the flow of vys into the illusion hiding your dragon cut out. You sense confusion, but send Zahak comforting thoughts in the hopes of soothing his nerves.

As you're escorted through the halls by two monks, you reach out towards Chrys via the brooches. “Chrys, are you free? I need you for a task.}

Her response comes after a moment. {I was preparing to perform my nightly ritual before getting some sleep, but I might lend my attention instead to a task. What need do you have of me?}

{I need you to look after Zahak, my dragon. I'm being put on trial for the incident in the gardens between Mortia and those women.} You sense a spike of panic through the brooches, it must be significant indeed if you can feel it even through the tenuous connection the brooches provide. {It's nothing to worry about, I ought to be fine. I merely need you to watch Zahak until I return.}

Her response is hesitant, and concern is clear in her thoughts. {Very well, Mikhael.} A pause, several times you hear the beginnings of vague, half-formed thoughts before she finally transmits something properly comprehensible. {Be careful.}

You further reassure her, careful to keep your mental 'tone' relaxed. {Don't worry, Chrys. Really, I'll be fine. However, I feel I must remind you of something. Zahak is not a mere animal. Rather, he is just as smart as any child, and he ought to be treated as such.}

Her response is significantly more lighthearted than the one previous. {I understand, Mikhael. Is it not customary to roughhouse with one's children? That is all I intend, not to somehow insult or debase its intelligence.}
(1/2)
>>
Her reassurance does much to comfort you. {Good, I merely wished to make sure you understand. After my trial, I will likely be meditating in the garden with Mortia. As a form of recompense for her overreaction. If you need me, that is where I'll be.}

The connection is severed, and you focus once more on the world around you. You emerge from the wing of the temple which houses the rooms of you and your companions and into the main hallways. From there it is only a short walk to the atrium where a small crowd has gathered; among them you note a collection of men and women hobbled by age, most of them with the milky white eyes that indicate the blindness of age. The men are all bearded, most of their beards white. The women have hair as pale as the snow that graces the peaks of northern mountains.

As you're led forward, the crowd parts before you. You hear someone mumble something about a 'disgusting human pig' but it's faint, and whoever said it is quickly hushed by another, apparently more tolerant or at the least more socially graceful brother or sister. The elders, or at least the monks you presume to be the elders, turn to you as you approach. They stand as a group, most of them eyeing not you, but Mortia with either disdain or curiosity.

When you come to a stop before the elders, one of them speaks. A woman, back bent and eyes blind, rasp out something you can't quite catch. A much younger boy, an initiate you'd guess, repeats what she evidently said. “Have you anything to say on your companions behalf?”

If we get a normal success and raise it to a great success does the related skills get a decrease?
Than if it stayed at a normal success or is the decrease related to if we got a natural great success?

Its almost two in the mornaing and the last session fucked up my sleep schedule.
What i'm trying to ask is basically this.
>>36133702
Would the skill gained from going for a great success be a lesser amount than if we stayed at a normal success.
>>
>>36133910
Aiming for Great Success depends on the situation. The one last thread was a waste of Vys, a success is a success. Being insecure with your ability and relying on magic to cover for any and every imperfection will ultimately weaken the character in the long run. Not just mechanically either. As is Mik relies to heavily on Vys for situations that aren't severe enough to warrant the extra effort. There are times when using magic to enhance his abilities affect how others react as well especially if they can tell he's doing so (This happened once a while back though it didn't turn into anything big).
>>
>>36134031
I'd go 150-the amount of vys we had to spend*3
>>
>>36133977
Are you talking comparing Mortia to a dog to appeal to their racism? Are do you actually think this is the same thing? Its hard to tell.
>>
>>36134094
Shit meant "or" not are. I blame the painkillers.
>>
You raise your voice above the low din of conversation so that you can be certain everyone hears you. “I've only this to say on my companion's behalf: the sisters she attacked are just as at fault for their fate as Mortia. Had they not invited her to eat with them specifically so that they may make fun of her, this would never have happened. They ought to be punished similarly.”

The low murmur of conversation that had pervaded the atrium rises into a incomprehensible din of arguing voices. You catch a number of voices hesitantly supporting you, where as the majority of others seem wholly against the idea. Frankly, you just sort of tune the voices out. It's fairly easy to do when they blend together into an incomprehensible slurry. When the voices finally still, the old woman speaks up once more. “Your beliefs are noted, Brother Abdul-Hakim. You'll receive ten lashes as punishment for failing to control your household.”

Ten lashes? You ought to be able to take ten lashes without breaking a sweat. You still feel like being a snide asshole though, and so speak up. “Of course, Elder. I have been neglecting the duties laid out to me by the temple. I suppose that when a man is busy single-handedly wiping out a band of well equipped, well trained pirates; saving the Shah's life after having already avenged the death of the previous Shah; and attending to the innumerable small disasters which plague his life like some sort of illness, things such as keeping the behavior of his 'household', as you people insist on calling it, fall by the wayside.”
(1/2)
>>
That sets off another rousing burst of discussion, this time you think most of it is sympathetic but, frankly, you don't care. You're too busy displaying the cockiest grin you can muster to the collection of elders gathered to sentence you. When the voices of the crowd finally die down the woman waves a hand dismissively. “Strip yourself to the britches-” A man steps out of the crowd, at least seven and a half feet tall and impressively muscled; especially for a Samjan. He holds in his hands a barbed whip, spikes of metal knotted throughout the leather. “-Brother Nejem will attend to your punishment.”

>You'll take your punishment like a man, and try not to cry out.
>You'll use magic to numb yourself, to make sure you don't cry out.
>Hey, nobody said the whip was going to be spiked. What's the deal?
>Write-in

the characters finding out about the vys thing was an answer to a question of mine, and soma has seem to not bother with it ever since, and only mentioned it after i asked, but yeah if he remember it could be a problem, but he also said that the vatis would see it as only natural thing to do..

Afterwards, can we ask what punishment the Elders get for being unable to control THEIR household? After all, even if she is a human it's pretty poor behaviour to treat a guest like that. After all, if she's part of our household, than an insult to her is an insult to US as well.

Are we allowed to duel the people who offended our honour? Because we can take a lashing, but if people are going to spit on our standing then we're going to have a problem.

You sigh, whipping off your cloak and neatly folding it before pulling off the tattered remnants of your Master's robes. Your underrobes, while ragged and torn, aren't nearly as threadbare and cut to hell as your Master's robes. Regardless, you slip them off as well, leaving you bare from the waist up. You pass your clothing to Mortia, who takes it somewhat uncomfortably. She doesn't seem entirely happy about being here, now that she's seen what punishment you'll have to face.

You take a moment to stretch out, loosen the muscles in your back and generally just try to prepare for the first time the whip meets your flesh. Of course, you could simply channel water magic to numb yourself. However, that would somehow cheapen your inevitable victory. You've faced down dragons, had your arm nearly torn off by a construct, slit your own throat several times, disemboweled yourself, and had the majority of the bones in your body broken or fractured at some point. What's a few lashes fro ma whip in comparison to all that?

One of the elders conjures a pillar of ice, condensing it from the air and rooting it firmly to the ground. You hold up your hands to the pillar and ice slides out to encase your hands completely. You take a solid stance, and brace yourself against he pillar for the first strike of the lash.

You hear the whip crack, and suddenly your back is aflame. It's like every neuron is screaming for you to run, to cry out, to resist. Something warm is running down your back, coating it. Your skin feels strangely loose. You can't quite figure out why. Regardless, you grit your teeth and bear it. You think you heard someone from the crowd gasp, but you weren't properly paying attention.

(1/3 or 4)
>>
>>36135383
>implying Soma GMs this quest exclusively
>implying his sister didn't write this after Soma fell asleep to fatigue
>>
The next strike hurts worse. The spikes knotted in the whip stick within your flesh, and the lasher is forced to rip the weapon free of your skin. You feel another gash open as a result. The pain is almost unbearable, but you force yourself to focus on other things. You try to slip into a meditative calm, but then the lash strikes again and against your will you arch away from the sting, only for it to come again a moment later, this time lower. You bite down on your lip hard enough to draw blood, but do not cry out. Even as the taste of copper fills your mouth.

The fifth lash lands across your shoulders and wraps around to cut your chest. Your vision goes white for a moment, blackness encroaching at the edges as another strike lands across your spine. You think someone's crying, but it's not you. You're certain of that.

There's a pause, and you take a moment to glance over at your shoulder. You're shocked to find that the gash is much deeper than you'd initially anticipated. It cut through a significant amount of muscle tissue, though fortunately it failed to reach the bone. Your contemplation is ruined by another white hot lance of pain. You hadn't been prepared for it, and find yourself opening your mouth to scream. Fortunately you manage to choke it off. Nothing but a grunt manages to escape.
(2/4)
>>
You lose track of how many lashes you've endured, but the remainder seem to pass quickly. Much of the feeling is gone, though each one still stings in a dull sort of way. The last one in particular lands across the back of your right arm and tears open the flesh there. Yet more blood fills your mouth as you bite down hard on your tongue, you may have actually bitten through it. However, with that the ice encasing your hands recedes. You very nearly collapse into a pool of your own blood, but fortunately someone catches you. You're able to get your feet underneath you after a moment's rest, though you can't seem to properly stand up straight without experiencing searing pain.

You're bleeding rather profusely, and something tells you your back is little more than ribbons of shredded flesh. You feel faint, and vaguely nauseous. Fortunately, you're a healer. Unfortunately, knitting your flesh back together proves more difficult than you'd initially anticipated. The pain fogs your thoughts, and makes it difficult to cast. Somehow you manage it, but it drained your reserves more than you would've usually expected.
>Vys Pool: (32/37)

As the last of your wounds knit themselves closed you stand up straight. A glance at your shoulder reveals a thin scar tracing its way along the route of the gash which graced your flesh not moments ago. You can assume your back is similarly scared. However, at least the crowd seems properly humbled. Not once did you truly cry out, and despite the pain your eyes remain dry.

You spit a mouthful of blood at the feet of the Elder who announced your sentence, before bowing low. “I thank you, Elder. Though I must admit, I was expecting rougher treatment. The tender ministrations of Brother Nejem... well, needless to say I feel he may have been pulling his punches. I understand I've got a sort of animal magnetism but let it be understood, I have no interest in other men.”

Huh, not even a smile. How could nobody even crack a grin? That was pretty damn funny, in your book. Mortia hands you your clothing, though she refuses to meet your eyes. You calmly dress yourself, the fresh blood which covers you staining your underrobes, before turning your back on the gathered monks and marching confidently out of the atrium. Mortia follows close behind.

Eh, we already killed the Shah, and essentially nuked a city over here. We're good for a while, this is petty shit.

So I say instead we get constant, petty revenge. Let's write a song and enchant it into the walls of the keep when we leave.

Do they destroy the only known recent permanent enchantment, or keep it for study even though it erodes their very souls and sanity?
>>
>>36135666

Well, two reasons. First and foremost he was raised as a noble's brat, he expects people to cowtow to his whims. Second, most every authority figure save a handful have screwed him over at some point. His parents haven't, and the Varistha didn't, and his Master didn't, but most every other authority figure has.

So gentlemen, what do you think would be the best area of fire magic to focus on while getting our insights towards grandmaster? I am assuming that it would work like water did where getting atleast 3/5 in one area would boost us to GM level with in it.

I am thinking efficiency, if that is possible. Maintaining advanced illusions is very draining from what we have seen and I would bet some of the cooler combat applications are just the same.

You briefly consider having little mocking figurines form from the pool of your blood to parade in front of the elders before marching out after you, but decide against it. You've insulted them enough, at least for today. With that in mind you simply march on towards the gardens. Mortia seems unexpectedly shy, as she doesn't say a word on your way there. Maybe she's feeling a bit squeamish after seeing your back reduced to a bloody pulp?

As you step into the gardens you find them largely abandoned. A handful of monks sit around a fire at the center, near the small pond that serves as the focal point of the garden. Somebody, a man, is singing. His voice is loud and booming, a deep baritone. He's singing an old ballad about a clever Vatis who courts the Shah's daughter and heir in secret. It's a lengthy tale, with something of a grim conclusion. If you remember correctly, the Vatis and the Shahzadi are caught and put to the sword.

Mortia speaks, interrupting your thoughts. Her voice is quiet, you'd even go as far as saying timid. “I didn't know they were going to do that to you.” You glance over your shoulder to find her with her arms folded uncomfortably beneath her chest, eyes focused on her feet. “If I'd known, I would've just ignored those stupid women. I didn't- I would've preferred to simply take the punishment I was due, rather than have you suffer in my place.”

You wave a hand dismissively. “You're paying me back. That's what this is, remember? You're tutoring me. Besides, I would've gladly done this for any one of the party members. You, Skull Kid, Profectus, Chrys, Darzi, Fulvia... you're my friends, my family, or at the very least my accomplices. If someone insults you, they insult me as well.”
(1/3 or 4)
>>
She sighs, shaking her head. “While I'm touched,-” Judging by the tone of her voice, she's not touched. “-by your self-sacrificing attitude it doesn't change that what happened wasn't fair. I should have been the one to face the whipping post, not you.”

Gods above, why does she have to make this difficult. “Look, Mortia. It's over and done with. There's no sense worrying yourself mad over the past. Now, if you're not too busy moping about would you be so kind as to pick out a good spot to meditate so we can get this show on the road?”

She glances up for the first time since the whipping began, looking around the gardens briefly before pointing off into the woods. “This way, then. Follow me.”

You do as asked, following her beyond the treeline and into the underbrush. The garden seems alive with the sounds of insects and small animals, a chorus of chirping, clicking, and buzzing. Mortia steps with surprising grace across the forest floor, sometimes you forget she's lived in woods for most of her life, until finding a small clearing. She takes a seat on the moss-covered floor of the garden, and you do the same.

She clears her throat gently and begins to speak, her tone official. It's the same tone your old Master used to use whenever he'd lecture you on one topic or another. “Now, before we begin it's important that you understand what you're sensing when you sense life. It's not water, nor is it blood or any other bodily fluid. Rather, you're sensing vys. You're discerning the life that pervades them and allows them to function as human-” She catches herself. “-Well, as sapient beings. However, you're not just sensing vys in general. You're sensing a specific kind of vys. Vys which lies within someone's reserves and the ambient vys which pervades this world are two entirely different things.

(2/3)
>>
She folds her legs more firmly beneath her and assumes a meditative pose. “What we're going to be doing is attempting to not only sense this vys, as I'm sure you're already capable, but rather we're going to try and discern how this vys is being used. The difference between vys sitting in someone's reserves and vys being used to cast a spell. Understanding this difference is the first step towards understanding how to touch the mind of another using Nature magic.”

You assume a meditative pose similar to Mortia's own. “Very well then, sounds simply enough.” Unfortunately, Mortia doesn't respond. Seems she's already slipped into her trance. You close your eyes as well and let the world fade away, for once welcoming the onrushing blackness that marks the beginning of a deep trance.
