Welcome back to Civilization: Lizardfolk! In the previous thread we founded a new lizardfolk tribe and dubbed them the Mosstooth tribe, along with our mythic leader Quillock. All previously from a much larger clan, and exiled due to a failed coup of Quillock. Settled upon a river, your tribe has done quite a bit to fortify their position. Current fortifications include a crude palisade and vine netting over the village.

Currently the tribe is picking over the remains of a failed all out attack by a nearby harpy tribe. Nearly slain to a main, the tribesmen are picking over the spoils of victory while Quillock interrogates his newfound prisoners. The dialogue, as before, is quite crude from the harpy's point of view, and it seems that this was just a raid of opportunity, as they saw the landbound lizardfolk as weak and easy fodder and food.

Let's do this
>>
Sweet. I thought you'd gone to bed.

>Go to their camp and kill the survivors, recover anything useful.
>Cut the wings off of the harpies we captured.
>>
Quillock steps back from his interrogation of the harpies and deliberates on what to do. He has three options, as he sees it. He can kill the harpies, making them examples for other possible enemies of his, or he can release them, and let them spread word of the might of Mosstooth, or lastly, he can cage them, and find use for them in life.

What does Quillock do with the captured harpies?

>[]Kill - > No prisoners

>[]Release -> Make messengers

>[]Enslave -> Cage he birds

The Mosstooth tribesmen are currently picking over the remains of the harpies. It seems that their feathers could be used to adorn clothing and weapons, as well as help in minor insulation, though more feathers will be needed for that. Their bones are hollow, so they could be made into specialized weaponry or items. And their meat is tender, and may be tasty when cooked.

>Gain 42 Harpy Corpses
>>
>>36129073
Make messengers.

Also, bury our dead. In fact, make the harpies bury our dead.
>>
>>36129004
Nah, just was doing homework. Time consuming as fuck.
>>
>>36129004

Unimaginative but your heart is in the right place. We should make a cage for the bird brains while we go to their camp and get the rest of their clan. Then we bring them back to the pen in our village, releasing two at a time to scout. If they betray us or run away we kill their clan members.

So we get potential labor and scouts. Much better for us.

These things are rather flighty. If we are firm but fair we can tame them into good vassals. I'm sure they don't appreciate that their queen sent them into a death trap. If we make life with us look good we could continue to reap the rewards.
>>
>>36129004

>[]Enslave -> Cage the birds. Cut their wings off as well.

>Use the dead harpies as a food source. Keep the bones.
>>
>>36129104
Seconded.
>>
>>36129147

But if we cut their wings off we can't use them as scouts. They are much more useful remaining airborn. Why permanently maim when fear is just as good to control them?
>>
>>36129192
I doubt they'll ever be willing to serve as scouts. They may be useful as slaves. Really I think we should just kill them, but I doubt that would be a popular choice.
>>
Going with:
>>36129104
>>
>>36129104
I considered the following and find it agreeable.

If it goes well then we get a reliable scouting force.
If it goes wrong then we get dinner.
>>
After some thought, Quillock orders a number of the tribesmen to construct a number of cages for the tribe's new canaries. This is done posthaste and to great effect. The five are quickly caged, though they are still bound by their hands to restrict articulated movement. Three lizardfolk are put as guards, while the rest stockpile the bodies in a dry location.

The logistics of cleaning camp, repairing broken structures, such as huts and the net, moving the bodies and caging the birds takes the rest of the day. The night is uneventful, and the dawn comes quickly.

I think we should have the reputation of burying enemies. Let's everyone know that we are honorable but we are NOT to be messed with.

The day dawns and Quillock is already barking orders to the tribe. He has any too injured or weak bury the dead, while organizing a harpy hunting group. He elects nine males and six females to go. Eight of the males are proficient in melee combat, while the other seven members are outfitted with javelins and atlatls.
They are sent to the southeast into the deep jungle.

Further in they come across a small tribe of howler monkeys! Disturbing their nest by mistake, the monkeys howl and rage at the intruders. The biggest, ugliest lizardfolk steps forward and roars at the skittering monkeys! They immediately scatter at the huge lizard!
>>
After exploring the area, the group settles down to rest for the night, hunting the immediate area for game and such. The village finishes up the burial and repairs today as well.

>[]Explore(X)
>>
>>36129910
The hunting party should continue its search for the harpy nest while the village fortifies. Last thing we need are any of those monkeys sneaking in to steal supplies.
>>
>>36129910
Divide our forces. Send parties of three out and established a base camp to operate from.

Back at the village, lets start repopulating our tribe.
>Breed Lizardfolk
>>
>>36129910

Village should gather/hunt

Others keep exploring I guess
>>
>>36130000
Where would you want to establish a base camp? Also, currently none of your women are in heat, and as such their fertility rate is quite low.
>>
We should train the harpies as scouts. Release one at a time and promise to torture and kill the others if they do not return. This way we can also see if harpies are loyal.
>>
>>36130165
Someplace somewhat comfortable, pull reeds to form crude shelters. Post a watch.
>>
>>36130165

So what are the requirements to get them from infertile to fertile? Breeding is like the only major trait we have.
>>
>>36130264
Lizards breed in clutches during heat. If it isn't heat, we aren't breeding. Simple as that.

However, there are herbs and things that can induce heat. If only we had an apothecary...
>>
>>36130226
I mean in which direction from camp.

>>36130218
The camp can start training as a minor action, would only take a handful of lizards

>>36130264
Its based on the time of year. Generally it has to be the wet season, which is coming up fairly soon. When she's in heat, the fertility rate is 90%, and egg gestation, with the best condition, is only three months. One female lays 8-12 eggs in a clutch, of which generally 75% hatch.

In any case! To the case of keeping things moving:

Hunting Party:
>[X]Explore:Southeast
>>
The small scouting party scouts to the southwest of the village for a suitable spot. What they find is... oddly disturbing. They find an ancient battleground, upon which rusted, unusable for combat, and skeletons litter the battlefield. Chalax, one of the three, feels the heat in his veins exaporate. He quickly hurries back to camp before anything can occur. It is obvious that this place belongs to the dead.

Quillox personally spends the day training the harpies. His method is simple. He takes one harpy out of a cage, and out of earshot of the rest, explaining that it will scout the northern territory and come back to report. If the information is accurate, it will receive extra rations and some time in the river to clean. If it does not return, its fellows will die. Each harpy will be kept out of earshot of one another and told this separately. It works like a charm, each harpy reporting the same thing over the day: an abandoned camp, with rotting corpses within, looking like lizardfolk. Quillox then follows up on his promise, giving them food and allowing each to bathe separately, albeit with a guard and the same promise as before: leave, and your fellows die. The harpies are obviously more happy at the end of the day, and their bonds are loosened slightly, though another guard is put on duty to compensate.

The hunting party fares well as they explore further southeast! In fact, the hunting is plentiful, and they find a large clearing with which to rest at the end of the day! It is when sentries are being posted that something happens.

An elderly lizardfolk, ancient by the standards of the tribe, hobbles into view, wearing a simple green robe. He approaches the camp, leaning on his quarterstaff. The guards are silent, though their weapons are drawn. The lizardfolk, bent with age, smiles, and points to one of the company - the lizardfolk known only by one rune: V. "Come to me, child, I must impart something of great importance to you."

V, not sensing any danger, tells the group to keep an eye, but not to react with hostility. The druid leads V to the center of the grove, and says the following as his hand is lain upon V's arm. "You have a special connection with the jungle, child. You have the potential for greatness. I am at my life's end, and you at your beginning. Please, allow me to impart my knowledge upon you." V, slightly perplexed, nods, listening.

The druid stands before V, tapping the lizardfolk's chest three times, before intoning some words in an unintelligible language, and with a flash of light, disappears!

The rest of the troop rushes to V's side, asking if their companion is okay. V stands, now clad in the colors of the jungle, staff in hand, and knowing gleam in eye. "I am perfectly fine. Now let us rest."

>Gained: V, Druid of the Jungle (Attunement: Nature gained)

The day ends, and the night passes peacefully!

I support this anon: >>36130753, we should make a little sustainable fish farm, at least to test out the concept. Basically, we dig a little enclosure and redirect the river that way. The enclosure is mostly closed off by logs/earth/wahtever but with a net over the top to allow some water circulation. That, or whatever design the tribe expert deems wise.

More of the tribe should make suggestions!

Make fishing weirs for now (after slash and burn) and gather materials for dam. To make a lizard (beaver) dam we are going to need a lot of materials.

Once we have the weirs working and the dam in place we should research chinampas.

The day begins and the camp begins to focus on another venture: expansion. Chalax marks a sizable portion of the jungle to be cleared north of the village. Partially for camp expansion, but mostly for the ability to grow sustainable crops with the seeds harvested from the area. The day goes fairly well, but only about a fifth of the area is cleared. Having no access to fire, the trees are simply cut and stacked.

The harpy training continues in the same method as before, this time to the southwest. This time, the threat is slightly worse. Only one of their fellows will die if they don't return. Nevertheless, it works again! All of the harpies return, and enjoy a little bit of time to fly about camp, one at a time of course. They look rather happy at the end of the day, and one even has its bonds removed, and the others are not bound at the hands anymore, simply bound to the cage itself.

The scouting group finds itself staring a huge tree in the realm, with V at the forefront, not looking nearly as awed as the others in her group. They make camp outside the tree, posting a rotating guard for the night, and V exercising her newfound ability to guide the nearby plantlife into a makeshift shelter for the group.

Thus the day ends, and aside from a few screeches in the night for the hunting party, the day begins once more!

The village, finally noticing its dwindling food supply, focuses its efforts on hunting! They even release a harpy and instruct her to aid in the effort! Game is plentiful, and over the day they even catch some howler monkey! Brikit, one of the hunters, talks to the harpy a bit while they clean up a kill. "You know, we never wanted any needless death. Is there anyone else, back at your home, that might need help?" The harpy looks surprised at the question, but looks inwardly and doesn't respond. She doesn't come near Brikit for the rest of the evening.

The remaining harpies taming continues! In lieu of doing it himself this time, Quillox deligates the task to another, by the name of Jin'dal. He sendds them to the northwest this time! Uncharted territory, and they're sent in pairs for efficiency's sake. They return quickly and report that the area seems to be rather mundane, though flush with vegetation. One remarks it would be make a good area for habitation. Jin'dal rewards this remark with an extra fish, and allows three harpies to roam as they wish at once, while the fourth is kept in its pen, unbound. The harpies seem to be getting used to being around the lizardfolk, and are often seen conversing with them with rather friendly tones. The lizardfolk are a bit less apt to take them up on this, but politely respond, and some are becoming attached.

V makes her way up the tree, with four of the other fourteen in tow. She instructs the other ten to explore the ground portion of the tree for any issues. As she and the others crest into the upper boughs of the huge tree, they find themselves face to face with... harpies! Four adults and six chicks. One, a sentry, shrieks in anger, and looks ready to swoop! It may knock a lizardfolk off the edge!

instead of streaching the branches, why not make them grow vertically. Makes a cage to stop us from falling and might help hold off the harpy.
>>

"Stick together, don't show fear." V instructs calmly. She reaches out behind them and, stretching her magical limits, wills the trees boughs to form a makeshift wall behind them.

"We are not here to fight." V raises her hands up. "I am one with the land, please, let us help you. You'll starve here. We have food back at our camp, and we have already welcomed your other sisters.

The harpy looks to V with a new respect and deference, bowing her head. "Vinewalker..." The harpies coo. "Lead us."

[DRUID: AUTOSUCCEED]

V instructs the party to climb the tree, and they spend the night with the harpies, while V speaks with them at length about their ways and culture.

I think I am taking my party back to the village for now. The harpies can catch up once we get back and get some food for the babies. Once the tree harpies arrive, I think we can free the other harpies and give them a choice of staying in the village or the tree.

There is a good chance that all harpies will choose to go back to the tree, a choice which we should allow, but form an agreement that they scout for us in return for food.

Furthermore, we offer them a pact - they scout and fight for us with their FULL effort, should we be attacked (but at their discretion if we are the aggressors). In return, we protect their tree, from which they warn us of threats.

Moreover, they grant us access to the tree for whatever purposes, as long as we don't disturb them. I may visit/stay as an emissary and shape the tree to suit our / their needs.

I don't mind accepting the title.

The clearing today is directed by the tribesman Rasquar, who has taken the title of Builder. He expertly directs and leads the group of woodsmen in cutting down the trees. Under his skillful hand, the rest of the cordoned area is cleared! It is an area roughly four times the size of the village, and was sparse in trees to begin with.

>Gained: Lumber (12)

Also at the behest of Rasquar, tribesman Chalax begins working on a new project: something he calls a bowdrill! It works as a simple drill and firestarter, and seems fairly simple to develop. Chalax gathers his small retinue and begins drawing designs in the soft ground by the river.

>Research: Bowdrill (20%)

V leads her party in the direction of home at dawn, though in the previous night she discussed diplomacy with the remaining tribe. She outlines a fair agreement, to which they viciously agree. They plan on following in three days' time, after a few of their number return. It won't be hard, considering the past...
>>
>>36132754
Go on a gathering spree. See if we can't get some delicious foods, as well as herbal supplies and whatnot for various purposes.
>>
>>36132754
OH. Food(5) by the way.
>>
>>36132754
Nice. Lets keep working on the fire starter and begin the lodge construction. Once it is finished, we can dam up the river
>>
>>36132754

Nothing really creative on my end, except returning a different way then we came - go north from the tree if we haven't already picked a direction already. That way we can scout a bit more. Don't do it if there is any significant risk of getting lost though. Hunt if the opportunity arises. 4 lizardmen keep watch while we camp. On the way back is when most parties actually get ambushed, especially if they go back the same way.
>>
>>36132849
The only ford you currently are aware of is to the north west taking the detour will cost you a day's time if you wish to do so.
>>
>>36132754
I shall accompany V on her journey to insure that she comes back safely
>>
So should we go into researching metalwork once we can make fire? start scouting for a mine maybe?
>>
>>36132861

I do. As long as we didn't give an EXACT time frame to the harpies. If we did, then we go back the old way to honor the agreement.
>>
>>36132890
we should build furnaces for warmth since we're cold blooded and shit
>>
>>36132890
Bogiron could work. Vikings used it a lot, but I'm not sure if it forms in jungles. Metallic sands could be collected from the riverbed perhaps

Gosh freaking dangit. I meant only to be gone for a little bit for a run and I twist something. Took forever to limp my pathetic self back here. At least it looks like we are making good progress.

I think Jin'dal would like to look for rocks and large stones right now. We want to set the foundations for the different burrow/dams before we flood the area. Maybe when V gets back she can have vines and roots.......*root* the rocks in place for a firm foundation.

As well if we intersperse islands with trees in the flooded area and let the harpies make treehouses we can double up on defense. That's down the road though.

I telepathically teach you the ways of nature for a warrior so this does not happen again to a dear fellow tribe-lizard:

Bog iron leaves rust-coloured deposits around the edges of bodies of water so I think it's up to the OP

The lodge construction doesn't seem to go as well as planned. The tribesmen seem to be much more used to building simple huts, and thus overcompensate and still don't make much progress.

>Progress Slowed, Double Materials Consumed (4)

The bowdrill progress is nice and steady, they have a prototype, but it doesn't work very well.
(40%)

V leads the group on an alternate path back home, going through an unexplored portion of the jungle. What she finds is... unique. As the group enters a glade similar to the one where she attained her newfound powers, the group sees a large tree. It grows alone, no tree within fifty meters. As V enters the radius, she catches herself, feeling the power latent to the grove.

A sixth sense opens in V's mind, and she finds herself in empathetic contact with... something... a being. No, a collection of beings. They welcome her with warm happiness, and proceed to clear her body of any injury, small or large. It is during this that Teeeixth, one of the Mosstooth accompanying V, grabs her shoulder, as she had nearly doubled over.

The two converse for a time, and it is decided that the group shall camp in the grove for the evening.

The night passes, again, without trouble.

What does the Mosstooth tribe do?

Saved for later use.

Not to get into Otherkin territory but I imagine Jin'dal as dark green fading into dark red on the snout. As we're clearing the trees he notices a log floating downstream that is covered in moss and some small plants.

He thinks about as he continues to work

>The first seed being planted of the idea for Chinampas
>>
>>36133091
Naw, that's straight up furry lifestyling. Otherkins are the people who believe they have the soul of X creature.

Anyhow, disregarding how I know all of that, What's our supply situation like?

Sounds like V found some Dryads or nature sprits.

Keep working on the lodge and the bowdrill.

look out for any water animals, better to know about them before flooding the place.
>>
>>36133170
I will have to say no, for now, hah.
>>
>>36133084

Hmmm, I want to stay, but I feel like I need to get back for the harpies. Briefly, briefly, see if I can communicate with the beings. Instruct scouting party to leave me alone even if I am "out of it" during that time, but to wake me after allotted time is up if I don't "snap out of it." Myself. If I can establish communication, try to see what the entities are and what they need/want.

After that, leave. Will have to come back another day.
>>
>>36133212

By briefly I mean two hours tops, so we can still travel that day.
>>
Do harpies have wings+arms, or arm/wing combos like bats?

If interbreed, would the offspring be dragonpeople?
>>
Alright everyone, going to have to call it here.

I will still be around for a time to discuss things, such as world rules, surroundings, or mechanical discussions. How're you liking it, guys?
>>
I say we send a party to finally scavenge the other lizardmen village we had the fight at for lumber, rope, supplies, tools, etc
>>
>>36133241
The latter, and you do not know enough about their physiology to know the second part.
>>
>>36133246
Liking it so far,Maybe more part on the character interaction of the other player's?
>>
>>36133246

Im digging it a lot. Calling it now is good, I got work tomorrow -.-

I think we got a good/cool long term goal and a good foundation to reach it.
>>
>>36133246

I liked it a lot. When do you think you will be around next or can't say? Reason I ask is I would like to be here, but I don't check /tg/ regularly enough to have any sort of real chance of randomly catching it.
>>
>>36133288
The thing is, other than actions you take officially, I don't want to dictate how you each react.

>>36133305
The twitter would be your best way of doing that. Also, probably not tomorrow, since Warlords of Draenor comes out. Friday is a no, Pathfinder. First chance would be Saturday, if not then then Sunday.

>>
>>36133246
I'm liking the thread. Personally, I prefer letting OP take care of character interaction because I'm here to help a civilization grow, not roleplay. But by all means, continue doing whatever. It's been going great so far.
>>
>>36133323

Didn't see the twitter link. Will bookmark. Thanks for running this.
>>
>>36133353

I think current style can work as long as individual characters don't take the spotlight too much, and don't get any plot armor.
>>
>>36133353
I'll keep that in mind!
>>36133358
I'll -try- to post 12-24 hours beforehand. Though, sometimes I get inspired, and only give 2 hours notice, warning.
>>36133378
Generally whoever threw an idea up first will take the spotlight, along with any named characters who agree and are present. At least, that's how I've been doing that. Also, in mass combat, what I did in the harpy fight was give a certain amount of harpies who had to die in one strike for the leader to die. Perhaps I'll do some sort of stat system for named characters otherwise.
