You hurt her.

Oh gods you hit her square on.

She didn't see it coming. You should've warned her. You shouldn't have done that. She was distracted. She had her mind in the fight and didn't notice you. Or she noticed you, but was already entangled in the damn monster's appendages and couldn't get out in time.

You killed her. Oh gods you might have just killed her.

You drop on the demon-ship's deck, losing the oversized wings you were flying on, terrified. The deck is a gigantic pile of rubble, what's left of the Lintha frigate you just dropped.

Straight on Maka.

The wood has caught fire from the discharge of the smashed firewands, and is burning with a thick, noxious smoke. A tangle of bodies and tentacles lay spread at your feet.

She's not here.

Your vision getting blurry fast, you start digging in the rubble with your hands, tossing aside bits of ship hull and half-burned wooden beams and Lintha corpses.

You are dimly aware of what is happening around you, outside of your tunnel vision. Some blood-drenched guy is stabbing two half-naked twins in the kidneys. Zaan has caught fire and is dropping and rolling. He has a torn-off tentacle stuck in his ribcage, running him all the way through.

You'll worry about them later. You have to find Maka.

Hope she's alive. If she is, hope she can forgive you.

You pull a large piece of curved ship hull up and toss it aside, revealing the wriggling mass of red-black tentacles you dropped the ship on. It's oozing blackish ichor, five of its pseudopods messily torn off.

With a ferocious hiss, it lunges at you, a tentacle wrapping around your neck with a wet slapping noise and slowly squeezing.

This thing had Maka in its spires. She can't be far from here. She can't, right?

>Who are we?
Tia, a crazy murder machine who happens to be the Lunar Mate of our main character, Maka. During an operation (gone horribly wrong) to destroy a Lintha demon-ship called the Murdering Heart, you intercepted an enemy secondary fleet on your way, and carried a ship with you to use as a drop bomb. However, Maka couldn't get out of the way in time, and you accidentally hit her as well when you tossed it down on the Lintha flagship.
NOW SHE'S DEAD AND IT'S ALL YOUR FAAAAAAAAAAAAAULT

>Solar? Zenith? I don't know Exalted...
This quest is as newbie-friendly as possible, and I want it to work as a newbie's intro to Exalted. If you have ANY question, ask in thread. For the setting, google "1d4chan exalted".

>Archive?
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Solar%20Quest

>System?
Dicepool-like system. When performing an action, everyone rolls 1d10 when posting. the first X rolls are considered, where X is equal to attribute + ability. Yes, this means that the more people are posting, the stronger Maka is, up to a limit of her attribute + ability.

>XP?
Attributes cost [current score x5] xp. Abilities cost [current score x3] xp, except Zenith costing [(current score x3) -1]. Charms cost 10 xp, except for Zenith-based charms (related to charisma and physical/mental fortitude) which cost 8 xp. At the end of every "session" (thread) you will be presented with a list of possible acquisitions.

You grab the tentacle wrapped around your throat with both hands.

"...it's your fault! If you hadn't got in the way, Maka would have got out of the way in time! If you hadn't distracted her, she would've seen it coming!" You scream in the tentacle mass' non-existent face. "IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT!

Physical + war = 4 5 7 2 10 7 3 6 2 5 = 4 successes.

Your strength fails you. Your fingers slide on the tentacle's slippery surface and can't find a grabbing point, and the limb slaps back around your neck, clenching painfully.
[HEALTH: 5/8]

Your vision begins to go black as air and blood flows are cut out. You hear your spine cracking distressingly, and the tentacle lifts you by the neck, up in the sky above the monster and the pile of rubble.

Further away from where Maka's body might lie.

Desperately you struggle to grasp the limb squeezing the life out of you and wrench yourself free...

You have no idea why you were taking this so lightly.

This thing was fighting Maka, and it was winning. And you underestimated it.

...Of course, Maka is not as good at murdering things as you, so you sometimes tend to underestimate her too.

She'not exactly a fragile little flower needing to be protected, but...

What the hell are you thinking? Of course she is. And this mess happened because you half-assed it.

Not anymore.

Physical + War + GTS = 1 2 5 9 10 7 8 1 1 5 4 3 = 5 successes

You grab the tentacle squeezing your neck and rip it off casually in a shower of dark gore, dropping yourself down on the deck. Which cracks under your suddenly-increased weight, as bone and chitin plates grow over you in thick layers, covering you with your powerful natural war-armor.

Skullopener must've dropped somewhere around here while you were distraught. You see it lying on the other side of the writhing monster, stuck in the deck point-first.

The monster emits an inarticulate scream. It sounded a bit like a voice asking "who are you?", but it could have just been your imagination.

[SHELL-SHATTERING ATEMI]
[ESSENCE 1/7]

Your Anima exploding in light around you, burning even brighter, you advance towards the wriggling monstrosity of a Lintha demon. Each step crushes the deck under your feet.

With another gurgling noise, horrid and filthy, the anemone-like beast lunges at you with three more tentacles, aiming to straight-up impale you.

Physical + War + GTS = 7 3 7 4 5 5 6 7 7 8 3 6 = 5 successes

From the mass, you see a human head, a female head with a flat, expressionless gaze, roll up and come on top, crooked to one side. Its eyes turn to you a second before the tentacles strike

You sidestep the first, deftly, and it grazes your chitin armor with a rasping noise, slamming on the ship's shattered deck and digging a vicious trench through it.

The second meets your arm batting it aside. The force of the impact is tremendous, and you feel your armor cracking under the stress.

The third takes you straight in the middle of the chest. The plates hold and the sharp point doesn't penetrate, but the shock knocks the air out of you, probably cracks a couple ribs. You feel pain.

[HEALTH: 4/8]

(Cont.)

This pain is nothing. You grab that appendage with both arms, your fingers sinking deep in the reddish flesh, piercing the skin. You pull it back and to the side, with all your strength, and you suddenly feel it giving way as it comes loose, ripped from the main body.

Without letting it go, you lift it up over your head, and slam it down on the head, hard. It disappears under the mass of flesh. The impact digs a shallow crater under you both, sinking you a few centimeters deeper into the shattered deck of the living ship.

There is some movement to the side. it's the bloodsoaked guy from before. He looks like he jumped into a bonfire. He's running up, around the monster.

You don't care. Black blood covers the deck, making it slippery.

The monster, more than half of its pseudopods lost, starts slithering away from you and towards the parapet. You see one of Maka's arms peeking out from under the rubble in its wake, bent at a disturbing angle. Non-lunars shouldn't bend that way.

Anyone who has actually learned the most basic First Aid will tell you that the very first thing you do in assessing any emergency or triage situation is to remove the person from danger, or remove the danger from the person.

In this case, the most reliable method of doing that is to kill Admiral Tentaclerape.

1st is number of replies to the topic

For a moment, you're incredibly torn.

The monster is wheeling away, about to pitch itself in the ocean. You could still try and follow it later, but it would be certainly a lot harder.

You could end it here and now. But... Maka's hand, jutting out of the wrecked ruins of the deck at that supremely awkward angle, like a miniature broken tree from a shattered wasteland...

It lasts one second, but it feels like forever. You can't tear your eyes off it.

"MAKA!"

The voice makes you turn around. The man covered in blood, having noticed the arm, has turned round and is running up to you.

That decides it. You grab your blade and wrench it out of the deck, and in the same motion bring it down on the man, aiming at splitting him from head to toe vertically.

Physical + Dawn = 1 5 8 4 5 5 5 6 8 2 7 7 = 4 successes

Reacting with amazing speed, the man rolls to the side, narrowly avoiding your blow.

"Wh- WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!" He stands back up, bringing up his balled up fists in a guarding position.

"I'M NOT GOING TO LET YOU TOUCH MAKA!" You snarl, lifting Skullopener back up and trying to put it through his chest.

"WHO THE HECK ARE YOU, YOU MONSTER?!" He screams back, catching the tip of the blade in his hands and shoving it aside, drawing blood and cutting his palms. "WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO TO MAKA?"

"IT'S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS, LINTHA!"

Lintha? This guy is a Lintha! You knew it! You pull your sword's blade out of his hands, drawing an arc of blood through the air, And dodge a lightning-fast jab following it.

You're about to segue with another attack, when you see a golden castemark flashing on his forehead. The revelation astonishes you.

The Lintha have a Solar fighting on their side?!

>>
That hesitation costs you dearly: the corrupt Solar slaps Skullopener out of your hands and nails you with a kick to the face. You stagger, blinded for a second, and he seizes the opportunity to pounce on you. You both hit the ground and roll around, in a vicious grapple.

"TIA! STOP! FOR FUCK'S SAKE. HE'S WITH US."

Normally, words shouldn't be able to stop you. You don't think you're even in condition to hear them right now, actually. But two things about those words block you in your tracks, and, as a result, you lower your guard just enough to let the Solar's hands slip around your much-mistreated throat.

First of all, those words were charged with Essence. Something that brought them searing at the top of your mind. Something that didn't let you ignore them.

And secondly, that was Mikahil's voice.

>Lift your arms up and stop

A spike of energy, anger, hopelessness and adrenaline so high that it almost feels like it should pop your head off like a balloon rushes through you.

You wrench the solar's hands off you, probably snapping them in the process, then lift him up and toss him aside.

Your eyes slide back into focus.

The blood-soaked solar is lying on the ground next to you, very nearly passed out.

Mikahil is hoisting himself up on the deck, soaked in filthy water, looking like he just swimmed over to the Murdering Heart's side and climbed up the ship with his own hands and feet - which are covered in cuts and blood. His castemark is burning.

To the side, the anemone-like monster, trailing blood like s ruptured tank, is crawling up the parapet, about to pitch itself overboard and into the ocean.

Maka is still buried in rubble under you.

You must have missed a few threads.

You'll never make it to the parapet in time. You have only one way to hit it. Mikahil is spouting some garbage about the Solar being Maka's brother behind you. Bizarre, interesting, but hardly useful information now.

You stomp your foot on the ground, letting the shockwave lift loose debris from the ground by a few centimeters. Lifting your foot back up, you hook it under your daiklave and kick up, grabbing it while it's spinning in the air.

The other loose bits of debris have just fallen back down on the floor as you spin Skullopener around in a grand gesture and feed it the last of your Essence.

This is the first time you try this trick in an actual fight. No space for mistakes.

[LUNAR SILVER RECONFIGURATION]
[ESSENCE: 0/8]

The magical metal of Skullopener's blade rearranges itself, flowing like quicksilver before returning to solid form in the shape of a long javelin with a broad, triangular point.

Physical + War + LSR = 3 10 7 10 2 4 10 9 9 9 = 10 +1 = 11 successes.

The javelin leaves your throwing arm, sail across the air, and stab into the monster just as it leaps to its safety into the dark ocean below, nailing the humanlike head in the left eyeball.

The javelin plunges all the way through the monster's fleshy mass and stops there. All the transferred kinetic energy, quite simply, causes it to take flight, following the same flat, straight trajectory of your weapon, without any appreciable deviation or loss of momentum.

To everyone looking at the scene from the side, however, it just looks like the anemone-monster simply vanishing. One moment it's there, the next one it's gone entirely.

You glance aside. The burned, wrecked mess that is poor Zaan is slowly pulling Maka out of the rubble. She looks like a bloody ragdoll. You can't even imagine how many bones must be broken in a human body for it to flop around like that. Your heart cries in distress for a moment, but then you see her chest moving slightly and an eye blinking open.

She's alive. Thank Luna and Sol she's alive. She's safe. She's in good hands.

On the opposite side, you can see the wounded Solar's utterly astonished look on his face as he stares at you. His mouth is half-open in amazement.

You can't resist. You remove your war-armor's helm, turn to him, and flash a winning smile, as you give a tug at the hair-thin Moonsilver wire spool unwinding frenetically in your hand. The monster, flying high in the sky, explodes in a firework of gore as you turn the javelin in a star of jutting blades and pull it back, through its flesh and momentum, and flying back to you.

A few seconds later, Skullopener slams into the deck, so hard it causes the enormous demon-ship to bob left and right.

"By the way, I'm fucking your sister." You politely inform him.

You lost count of mow many times you passed out in the last hour.

You're almost hoping that you'll wake up and find out that you're dead. It would give you time to rest, at least. It would be a good excuse to get out of this stupid situation. Of the shame of having to take responsibility for the wrecked mess this operation has become. Of the hassle of actually having bones and nerve endings and the ability to feel pain.

With a mental sigh (mostly because you're too broken to manage to take a physical one), you open your eyes once more, regardless of how much you don't want to.

The sky is clear, for once. The fog has dispersed. It's raining.

...Alright, it's blood. It's raining blood. And the sky is clear.

Zaan is going over your wounds once more, with a resigned face. Even though he looks like he needs first aid almost as much as, if not more than, yourself. You hear the crunching thuds of shattered bones being set straight. It should be painful, but your senses are too dull to register that.

Mikahil is huddled over in a corner, softly crying tears of frustration. Five Tails is patting his head in an effort to cheer him up.

Next to you, Tia and Karas are having a slapfight, screaming at each other.

On the other side of the deck, Amata, drenched from head to toe in filthy water, stands with her arms folded, looking at the entire scene with a half-smile. She meets your gaze.

"Don't you love when a plan comes together this nicely, Maka?"

The rain stops. It takes you a handful of seconds more to manage to talk.

It is for DB women. They benefit dramatically from finding the highest-breeding partner possible and having babies with only them.

The Dragon-blooded men, on the other hand, benefit more from knocking up anyone who will let them.
>>
>>36117826
>It is for DB women
Hahahahaha
No. DB women aren't any more or less monogamous than DB men, thats not how it works. They can't have children constantly anyway, they have a downtime of at least 15 years between each child because it can literally kill them to have too many, not to emntion the Dynasts frown on bastards as much as anyone. They are still supposed to have children with their husbands/wifes, even if in reality they have bastards of course, but they don't make that public.

Sam and DS are OTP and I'm fairly sure he isn't gay.

>>36117825

Eh...ehhh...alright, I can compromise.

Nope, a dragon blooded woman can be a baby factory if they really want to, but having too many children too quickly can severely reduce their life span.

You manage to croak some words. You voice feels different, like it's not your own.

"...everyone... alive...?"

She sighs heavily, approaching you with slow steps.

"We almost lost the Gloria. It would have gone down under if not for Mika's charms. But it was still crippled badly. It's barely afloat, and we lost six sailors in the fight."

You didn't spend time with them, not enough to be familiar, but the image of the lookout that handed you the spyglass a few hours ago flashes through your head. You don't remember his name. You wonder if he's still alive.

"...We should... loot..."

"It's just us." She informs you. "The crew of the Gloria is trying to keep the ship afloat. We came here via Lunar Ride. And this ship is damn big."

You'd giggle if it didn't hurt so much.

She does it for you. "The fleet is a few minutes away. They're on the horizon. We won this fight."

"It was... mess..."

"No plan survives first contact with the enemy." She proclaims. "And we did a lot of damage while suffering minimal casualties of our own. It's a victory."

Because they don't want that many children, every single dragon-blooded is a huge strain on the houses resources, too many would severly upset the balance of power between the houses, leading to mass breeding, which leads to reduction of wealth for every individual house member.

This is why.
The other reason would be the Empress slapping them down for that kind of shit.
Another one is Neohmas still being evil demons and they wouldn't pollute the blood of the dragon with that, and even if they do, the other houses would stop inter-marrying with them.

You make some weak noises at Tia and Karas.

"Marry Tia? And Amata? Yes. You got a problem with that?"

He lifts his eyes to meet Tia's. He opens his mouth as if about to say something.

Tia grins and mimes the gesture of throwing a javelin while waggling her eyebrows.

He closes his mouth.

DAWN
Mob-Dispersing Rebuke (1 Ess. Say something threatening or make a show of strength, roll social + dawn. Unless a unit has a heroic leader who can beat your roll, the unit immediately routs and disperses.)
Regiment-Slaying Strike (1 Ess. Allows you to attack an entire crowd, mob or military unit at once.)
Fists of Iron (1 Ess, Scene. +1 damage once per combat, per enemy)

ZENITH
Ox-Body Technique (Permanent. +1 HP)
Essence-Gathering Temper (Permanent. Every time Maka loses a health level, roll 1d10. On a success, she regains 1 Essence. On a 10, two.)
Bloodthirsty Sword-Dancer Spirit (Permanent. Can be activated anytime. Grants +1 success to attacks, stacks with other charms, but cannot retreat, fight defensively or fall back.)
Terrifying Glorious Presence (upgrades Majestic Radiant Presence: on top of its effect, all social attacks have 1 automatic success)

TWILIGHT
Spirit-Discerning Glance (Permanent. Allows you to always see spirits, even when they are invisible or dematerialized)
Courtier's Eye Technique (1 Ess, Can tell someone's backgrounds)

NIGHT
Thunderbolt Attack Prana (Permanent, +1 damage to your first attack in a fight if you charge, run or leap into battle)
Lightning Speed (permanent, vastly improves your running speed)

ECLIPSE
Sea Wolf Style (1 Ess, add +3 to all ship-handling rolls for the scene.)
Mastery of Small Manners (1 Ess, you learn the short-term objectives of people in the scene. Gives straightforward ideas, but does not reveal complex plans)

Zenith covers charms that handle charisma and endurance.

Zenith 5 basically unlocks the highest tier of charms in those categories.
>>
Rolled 8 (1d10)

>>36118599
>Any Exalted anons feel free to educate this newbie as to exactly what Zenith 5 gives us and unlocks for us?
No clue. Exaltedfag's system doesn't follow normal unlocks. What I can tell you, though, is that we now have access to the best social, survival, and soak charms in the entire game, because we're at Zenith 5. We literally cannot get higher than that.
>>
Rolled 5 (1d10)

>>36118622
Some anons were talking about it giving us a armor upgrade or something?
>>
>>36118599
Could be anything really, EF isn't using core exactly as far as charms go, but what we do know is Zenith 5 has a perfect defense and an IKB upgrade at least
>>
>>36118599
If we can get it here, it would nominally unlock Adamant Skin Technique, which would be our first perfect defense.
>>
>>36118624
>We literally cannot get higher than that.
Not until we hit Elder at least, which I'm kinda sure is still a thing
>>
>>36118627
The charm in question is an upgrade to a charm we currently have called Iron Kettle Body

EF said that at zenith five we can get an upgrade to that charm that increases our damage resistance by a further one. So a lot of the stuff that's hurt us so far even with IKB active wont anymore.

We'll practically be invulnerable in combat.

That charm is the tip of the iceberg though because we have NO idea what else has just become available.
>>
>>36118644
Which will take years in-game time.
>>
Rolled 2 (1d10)

>>36118644
>Not until we hit Elder at least, which I'm kinda sure is still a thing
Well, we know our First Age predecessor had, like, Zenith 6, Social 6, so it's definitely eventually maybe a thing.

For now, though, we're at the absolute peak of Exalted skill when it comes to Zenith.

>>
Rolled 9 (1d10)

>>36118654
An important thing to remember is that people with both a damage-boosting charm and a good weapon will be occasionally able to damage us, since they would be able to occasionally deal 3 damage.

But it means we're literally immune to mortals, no matter how well-equipped, and even immune to damage from any Exalt who isn't both combat-specced and equipped with a proper weapon.

So far, I think only Peleps Deled was able to do that kind of damage. Tia could too - and technically, so could we, if we used Ten Ox and our artifact gauntlets on the same action.

It really does give us an insanely broad range if invincibility, though, and more-than-doubles our effective health against those sorts of enemies that can still harm us.

Glory to the Most High, yeah if he uses it, its not in the Core book though.
It only allows you to raise your permanent Essence, which is kind of something we don't really have here as such.

>>36118702
>There were 4 different breeds of Dragon King. Northern were pterosaurs, southern were anklodons, western were aquatic somethings-or-others, and eastern were raptors. They were spread all over.
They were overwhelmingly concentrated in the East, even with the different varieties. That was where most of their major cities were, the Eastern variety was the most populous, and the other varieties often ended up living in the East instead of where they were native. Were there Dragon Kings in every Direction? Sure. But they were wildly more common in the East - especially in the area of Rathess - than anywhere else.
>>
>>36118692
No, its from glories of the most high. In 2nd ed it boosted your essence by 1 temporarily, allowing you to access elder exalt abilities and raising your stat caps. It also gave you a point of limit.
>>
>>36118692
No its a Integrity Charm.
>>
>>36118726

That charm is probably how our previous exaltation host had stats beyond 5.

I'll bet the cost is prohibitive though.
>>
>>36118741
No, she was probably just older than a century. That also raises how high you Essence can be.
>>
>>36118726
Technically it allowed you to buy permanent Essence one higher than normal, and you could buy higher Essence abilities and Charms normal, bu could only use them when activating it.

>>36118741
No, our previous exaltation was centuries old and had legitimately high Essence. Hell, she was a Veteran of the Primordial War, her stats were actually lower than reasonable so we could actually lose that fight.
>>
Rolled 4 (1d10)

>>36118764
>her stats were actually lower than reasonable
Unless they were perfectly reasonable with how Exaltedfag's system scales. Don't make assumptions.
>>
>>36118764
Also, pretty much every one of those DB's that tried to gank us would have broken Deled in half.
>>
>>36118741
It's possible to go beyond mortal limits in Exalted. Even Exalt limits. It usually requires a minimum Essence rating of 5, though. Elder celestial Exalts could push their Essence, and thus their stat/skill caps, to 8 if I remember correctly, but it would take most of them nearly a thousand years to get there, especially if they invested XP along the way into things they unlocked before unlocking the next level.
>>
>>36118741
Nah she was just old, if the way skill upgrades work is anything like Core then I'd put her at around Essence 8 or so since that's how high her Zenith skill was
>>
>zenith 5
>maximun Maka
>seduce entire towns by staring at it on a map
>>
>>36118839
As if we don't do that already.
>>
>>36118774
Considering how fast we rose to 5. Unless 6 is the absolute maximum, thats pretty much not possible. And that would bring up the question of how she didn't have all stats that high. She had millenia to become stronger.
You don't need to get defensive on his behalf, the usurpation being a massice mechanics/plot clash is something we all realise and no one expects EF to fix it.
>>
>>36118839
Socialize is the large scale social ability. It's an Eclipse ability. Ask Mika to handle that.
>>
>>36118858
We got Presence for large scale social action, not to mention Performance.
>>
>>36118845
I think we can consider 5 to be the standard plateau that most exalts can rise to.

Celestial exalts in EF's system might have some kind of super high end charm or other upgrade that enables us to go beyond what other exalts would consider to be the best.
>>
Rolled 9 (1d10)

>>36118782
Note that, in this quest, 2 is the normal human limit, and 3 is the augmented human limit. So we're as far beyond Zenith 3 as one of our maximized Tiger Warrior supersoldiers would be than a random, untrained peasant.

>>36118839
We still need higher Social before we're maxed out.

>>36118858
No, that's Performance. Socialize is used for spreading rumors, gathering information, and so forth. If Presence and Performance are the various combat skills of social stuff, and Integrity is the resistance/dodge of social stuff, Socialize would be the War of social stuff. It's not used to actively actually do anything, it's used to set things up and develop social strategies.
>>
>>36118845
She was a lazy git mainly. Also, she was swarmed by powerful DB (who probably had powerful teamwork charms not seen since the first age) while she was unable to use her charms. And still didn't die to them.
>>
>>36118873
But 'staring at a map' is far from the the in person social that presence and performance entail.
>>
>>36118889
3 and 4 actually.
>>
>>36118877
There isn't really much reason to think thats the case. I mean, I totally understand wanting to cut out Elder Solar Charms, but since we only get the equivalent of Essence five Charms with 5 Zenith, it seems to scale normal.
>>
Rolled 3 (1d10)

>>36118911
Nope. Exaltedfag refigured it when he decided that 4 was too powerful for Tiger Warriors. 3 is the maximum to which we can raise our Tiger Warriors - the maximum that augmented humans can reach. 1 and 2, meanwhile, is 'bad for a mortal' and 'good for a mortal,' respectively.
>>
>>36118914
This is gonna be one of those "wait and see" situations. We won't know what's available until we have enough to buy our first zenith 5 charm.
>>
>>36118893
She was a lazy git by the time we met her, she wasn't one for the centuries after the primordial war.
And those "powerful" DBs are still millenia younger than her, not to count that DBs don't rise to much power in the first place, since they don't live long enough to get beyond Essence 5 in most cases.
And the fact that there was a poison that could even hinder her, considering the plethora of Resistance charms she would have after having fought the likes of Kimbery personally, is pretty much plot-fiat. I'm not saying thats a terrible thing, but thats how it is.
>>
>>36118960
>is pretty much plot-fiat
There were two Sidereals there, that's probablt pretty close to the actual answer.
>>
>>36118950
I'm also beginning to wonder just what kind of loot the Heart is gonna have on board.

My money is on magical materials. It stands to reason that the lintha will want to acquire things that enable them to entrench their power on the seas since they have no use for money or goods to trade with anyone.

We will also probably find a lot of slaves waiting to be taken to the Atoll to live a short and painful life serving the Lintha as well as weapons and armor.
>>
>>36118935
By augmented humans do you mean enlightened humans? Because they can reach 4 in a skill IIRC.
>>36118960
Those DB's were effectively engaging her as a mass combat unit. That means that straight mechanics don't apply, so they aren't staring helplessly at her unhittable DV, which is usually how you deliver the sort of unbeatable beat-down you're expecting.
>>
Rolled 1 (1d10)

>>36118960
>since they don't live long enough to get beyond Essence 5 in most cases
Most Terrestrials who don't die in battle live to 250-300 years in age. Especially those who have been raising Essence the whole time.
>>
>>36119023
There were also Twilight medicine that would extend their lives even further IIRC.
>>
Rolled 4 (1d10)

>>36119022
I mean humans who have been given the benefit of external magical support, such as Tiger Warrior Training Technique. I don't believe Exaltedfag ever made a distinction, skill-wise, between Enlightened and non-Enlightened humans, just stated that 3 was the maximum that a human with magical support could attain. 2 is the highest humans can attain without magic or other extraordinary support, while 3 is what they can attain with it.
>>
>>36119051
Nope.
>>
Rolled 8 (1d10)

>>36119043
At that point, you could just give one a Gem of Immortality. 250-300 is the age they live entirely by their own lifespan. But Age-Staving Cordial, Peaches of Immortality, Gems of Immortality, Celestial Medicine, and so forth can all extend their ages much beyond that.
>>
>>36119023
I don't know what you're trying to say here? Yes they live on average for 250-300 years, which is barely enough to get to Essence 5. They need more than 300 years to go beyond that, which is why most don't.
>>
>>36119079
Right. Mnemon would probably be considered fairly capable in the first age, but not that exceptional. Maka probably got jumped by at least one person as experienced as her, but combat speced.
>>
>>36119079
>>36119043
The average dragon-blooded was considered a mook by the First Ages standards, they didn't waste level 5 Manses and Peaches of Immortality on those.
>>
>>36119127
In the first age they did though. First Age DB were significantly stronger than the modern version.
>>
>>36119043
>>36119154
There are also Wood-caste DB charms that can help.
>>
>>36119156
Stronger, but not much longer lived. And those really old ones were mostly in the personal retinue of some Solar, which those weren't. Normal DBs didn't live much longer in the First Age.
Which was, afterall, on purpose.
>>
>>36119154
Twilight derived age lengthening medicine was available for mortals.
>>
>>36119174
That doesn't mean it worked on DBs.
Not to emntion that the Dreams of the First Age books explicitly talk about the mortality of DBs so they didn't get these kinds of enhancements, even if they were in theory available.
>>
>>36119172
The Dragon blooded assigned to a Directional fortress were probably significantly more capable than the average DB of that era though.
>>
Rolled 8 (1d10)

Uh, what? Essence 6 has a 100 year requirement. Essence 7 is the 250 year one.
>>
>>36119200
That one wood caste who was the oldest DB in existence was just essence 8, and he was so ancient even Twilights didn't know how he did it.

>>36119207
For Solars. Its different for all Exalted, actually.
>>
>>36119170
>>36119218
Wood Aspect, not caste. Dragon Bloods don't have Castes
>>
>>36119218
Its been a while, but it might have been only Infernals where that was the case. DBs canonically are said to not usually get over 5, but I think the reason isn't really explained.
>>36119206
I would wish I could believe First Age Solars were that sensible, but most likely they got exchanged every few years.
Not that it matters, anyway, since even a really high Essence DB can't touch a Elder Solar because of Charm difference. We have no idea how that works here though.
>>
>>36119251
Emberassing typo, but I think we all know that. Its functionally the same thing anyway.
>>

are you sure? This is the first I've heard of that.
>>
>>36119275
Functionally there isn't one. Its just a matter of semantics, because the DBs are differed by having a elemental Aspect instead of a "function" division like the castes of Celestials.
>>
Rolled 2 (1d10)

>>36119218
>For Solars. Its different for all Exalted, actually.
Bullshit.
>>
>>36119279
Infernals take less time, for one.
I think he got confused, because DBs do actually not reach higher Essence usually despite getting very old, the only 5+ DBs are far older than average. Maybe Alchemicals have a different rate either? I don't know about those.
>>
>>36119257
>Not that it matters, anyway, since even a really high Essence DB can't touch a Elder Solar because of Charm difference. We have no idea how that works here though.
Most likley the answer is that a unit of essence 4-6 DBs swarmed past Maka as a mass combat unit in the exact same way a mass combat unit of Lintha swarmed Maka and managed to hurt her despite her charms.

DBs have explicitly the same rate, they are even mentioned as not living past 300 most of the time in the section for Essence growth in the core.
The reason for them not having higher Essence is because most of them simply aren't very spiritual. Its something that players like to handwave, but normally you should grow spiritually grow to raise your Essence.

Not "Half-Solars" or "Half-Castes". It just Awakens their essence, much in the same way as alchemy or martial arts training do.
It's in the form of a blessing from the UCS and has a limit on how many people you can Awaken based on your Social score.

There is a specific Zenith 5 charm that does that.

We haven't trained her up yet. She is still a normal maid.

Correct.

I just meant that they're not technically half-castes because half-castes are biological offspring of Exalted, while this is more like a blessing from the UCS mediated by a Zenith.

Or, by extension, give them an exciting life and maneuver them to be in a prime position to Exalt. The pattern spiders can gently guide a person to being a heroic badass by forcing them into situations and rigging their chances at survival.

The "giving half castes access to their parents' skill" was basically a way for the developers to differentiate them mechanically with almost no actual effort or work. Naturally, developers being lazy and not thinking things through leads to bad outcomes.
>if they can't get Exalted Charms anymore, then they aren't Half-Castes, no matter what they get called
Depends on what you think are the most important part of them. I didn't think that a particular lazy mechanical implementation was core to their identiy
>>
>>36120054
>was core to their identiy
No but it was the core of why they were shit.
If they make them NotGodblooded. Thats completly different. If they give being the child of a Exalted narrative weight with a not lazy bullshit cop-out, thats a good thing.
I personally, prefer them to be mortal, because I find the implications of that far more interesting, but its a personal taste. As long as they don't repeat the Half-Caste shittyness of 2ed, everyone will be happy.
>>
>>36120054
>Depends on what you think are the most important part of them.
They really weren't amazing enough otherwise to balance the idiocy of that. They were just another form of -blooded.
Which doesn't really make much sense, given how much importance is put on the Terrestrial exaltation being special because it can be passed down. Celestial Exaltations are explicitly something you need to have earned, thats the point, handing those powers to someone by birth, completly goes against the narrative core of the Lunars and Solars.
>>
>>36120082
I'd be fine just giving them Enlightened Essence and more BP/other character creation points and leaving it at that. The high-essence environment they were conceived/gestated in rubbed off on them, leaving them a truly exceptional member of humanity, but nothing more than that.

Maybe give Solar half-castes extra BP and skill points, Lunar half-castes extra BP and attribute points, and so forth.

And, for fuck's sake, remove the term 'half-caste' while you're at it. If you have to call them something, Sun-blooded, Moon-blooded, and Star-blooded are much more evocative terms.
>>
>>36120082
>I personally, prefer them to be mortal, because I find the implications of that far more interesting
Aren't the implications just that they end up getting endowments by gods looking to curry favor with the celestial anyway?
>>36120121
And I prefer the idea that that was the plan, but unexpected consequences are a thing.
>>
>>36120139
I would be fine if they get born as heroic mortals. That would make at least some sense.
>>
>>36120156
That's basically what I'm getting at. Give them more BP, some splat-appropriate extra dots based on their parent, and standard Enlightened Mortal-style Enlightened Essence and call it a day. No charms. No special golden babies. Just mortals with an extra splash of excellence.
>>
>>36120155
>Aren't the implications just that they end up getting endowments by gods looking to curry favor with the celestial anyway?
Thats one of many possibilites.

>And I prefer the idea that that was the plan, but unexpected consequences are a thing.
We're talking about the reason for them to exist as a part of the game, why they exist in-universe isn't really part of the discussion. There is no reason that Autochthon wouldn't have allowed the superweapons to breed slightly less superweapons.
Its about the writer making it a possibility which weakens the narrative.
>>
>>36120202
>Its about the writer making it a possibility which weakens the narrative.
And I think it strengthens the narrative of them being powerful god kings, whose powers aren't inherited. I think giving their children a taste of power, but ultimately having no hope of matching their parents, is better for that. In fact, I'd prefer to stipulate that they can NEVER exalt, under any circumstances. That path is closed to them from birth, all they ever all and will ever be is pale shadows of their parents.
>>
>>36120202
>Its about the writer making it a possibility which weakens the narrative.
Anon, I agree with you 100%, but I want to pedantically correct your terms. It doesn't weaken the narrative. It weakens the themes and motifs. People who don't tend to use those particular themes and motifs - specifically, of exaltation being a rare achievement, and its power being all about what a person does rather than how they were born - won't care, because it doesn't influence the narrative they create. It's only people who actually use that motif who find their narrative weakened by Half-castes.
>>
>>36119408

But it came up in this quest, so we had to take it into account.
>>
>>36120269
You're actually right. Yes, its the them and motive, not the narrative. Its not even pedantic, because people whos narrative is weakened, can just ignore them, its more in discussion with others about he setting when they become problematic.
>>
>>36120860
It definitely is pendatic, I just felt the accuracy was important, because using the wrong terms on such a contentious and subjective subject can easily lead to misunderstanding.
>>
>>36120860
To me at least, the strenght of the Half Castes is in their narrative and history. That is, the way they largely turned against their parents and then were betrayed and murdered by the Dragon Blooded is a story I personally feel is important, as it drives home both the cruelty of the First age solars, and the hypocrisy of the DB.
>>
>>36121370
Thats pretty much the story of all the artificial races though.
>>
>>36121407
Nope. Most of the artificial races sided with the solars actually, even the ones that weren't objectively abominations that had to be killed.
>>
>>36121438
Several didn't. And there is no reason you can't have some do it anyway.
I mean, you definitly can do that type of thing with th Half-Castes, but you can just as well do it with the artificial races, its not really something that only Half-Castes, by nature, could pull off. Its something you can use them for if you already have them anyway.
>>
>>36121407
All the races period. The Primordials created gods and mortals, get betrayed. Autocthon creates exalts, gets betrayed. Celestial Exalts create half-castes, get betrayed. It's the recurrence of the same action over and over and over.

I like the half-caste narrative role of being forever-deprived. They'll never be their parents. Most mortals can't even see or imagine the things Solars and Lunars and Sidereals can do, but the half caste can. Not only do they get to see their betters doing something, they get to look behind the curtains and see how it's done but still never be allowed to do it.

Imagine never being allowed to drive. No matter how old you are, no matter how many tests you pass or how well you do in practice runs, you'll never be allowed to operate a motor vehicle on a city street or highway. Everyone else has their license and offers to drive you everywhere and occasionally rubs it in your face that you can't drive, but you just have to sit there and take it. That's the role Half Castes have to suffer.
>>
>>36121468
>but you can just as well do it with the artificial races
Not really. The main difference was that the half castes were perceived as a threat in a way that the artificial races weren't, due to the fact that half castes were signifigantly stronger individually than artificial races, their potential to politically side with the dragon kings ect. In short, they could become a second Lintha type threat. I mean, if you want to have the solars to have created an artificial race with the capacity to be a perceived threat to the DB I suppose you can, but you were just complaining about half castes.
>>
>>36121542
>They'll never be their parents.
I like that, as something about children of Exalted. I just think that you don't need to give Half-Castes exalted Charms to tell that kind of story or give that kind of impression. Quite the opposite, for me, it lessens the impact of that fact.
I don't think they 'can' never equal their parents, but the majority simply won't. Both for the child, that will forever only get to see wonders it can never truly 'have', and for the parent, for who his child will always fall short.
But why do they need solar charms for that?

>>36121587
The problem is you keep talking about the story as it is. If Half-Castes wouldn't exist, would many people really think "We totally need a faction that was powerful enough to threaten the DBs and betrayed the Solars just to be betrayed by the DBs?
If yes, then gratulations, you have Lunars.
I'm not saying you can't do anything with Half-Castes, I'm saying there is no particular reason for them to exist at all. All the other stuff is just giving them fluff in hindsight, its not what they were put into the game for.
>>
>>36121542
>Everyone else has their license and offers to drive you everywhere and occasionally rubs it in your face that you can't drive, but you just have to sit there and take it. That's the role Half Castes have to suffer.
That's my view, but they work hard and excel, they'll also have juuust enough power to outperform a newbie DB, until they get a year or two of experience and blow past them, off to better things. A taste of power to make the suffering all the sweeter.
>>
>>36121661
>to outperform a newbie DB
You see, I see no need for that. Its just giving them superpwoers for the sake of superpoers.
That effect isn't actually stronger because they can outperform a DB. If they just get born as heroic mortals, for example, you get the exact same effect, without all the issues of hereditary celestial Exalted abilities.
>>
>>36121650
>If yes, then gratulations, you have Lunars.
Well, except for the bit where virtually no Lunars actually planned the usurption with the DB's. I mean, you could do that, but you have to completely rewrite most of the elder lunars, and explain why the DB's betrayed the Lunars but not the Sidereels.
>>
>>36121693
>That effect isn't actually stronger because they can outperform a DB. If they just get born as heroic mortals, for example, you get the exact same effect, without all the issues of hereditary celestial Exalted abilities.
not really, they're special, they're unique. They're also constantly surrounded by people far more capable.
>>
>>36121650
>But why do they need solar charms for that?
if all they had were the excellencies, I wouldn't mind.

>>36121650
>I don't think they 'can' never equal their parents, but the majority simply won't.
They have an Essence cap of, what 3? MAybe 4. Solar/Lunar Essence cap is 8. They literally cannot make the essence requirements for learning higher tier charms. Sure, they get a DB's essence pool to use Solar charms, but they'll never be able to use any of the best charms. I don't think they'll ever be able to even learn Celestial martial arts, which DBs can with ease. It's a numbers game, they just don't get anything substantive.
>>
>>36121733
The point was, Lunars totally could serve that niche if you wanted them, they already do in some ways, since alot of them did canonically abandon their mates.

>>36121751
Heroic mortals are special and unique, And they would be born as heroic mortals, thats plenty special. They get to be smugly superior to pretty much everyone else. Until they grow older and realise how little they actually have.
They don't need the special solar powers for that.

>>36121771
The point was that in theory they could exalt too. I see no particular reason to disallow that. Its just really unlikely they will, because its really unlikely for anyone.
Unless one parent is a DB I guess, in which case it really doesn't matter anymore.
>>
>>36121798
>Until they grow older and realise how little they actually have.
>They don't need the special solar powers for that.
Well, I don't want to actually give them solar charms. I'd prefer a few unique abilities to reflect their heritage, and then a single capstone ability depending on the caste of their parents.
>>
>>36121798
>The point was, Lunars totally could serve that niche if you wanted them, they already do in some ways, since alot of them did canonically abandon their mate
...so you're saying that there is no reason to have half castes because any narative space they fill can be filled by several other species, if you are willing to rewrite them a bit?
Is there any splat that that doesn't apply to?
>>
>>36121872
Well, Dragon-blooded for one.
But the point was more, that the narrative niche they currently fill, isn't a justification for them to exist the way they currently do. Because you can fill that niche with a lot of other, already for other reasons existing, splats and you wouldn't need Half-Castes. You can ditch Half-Castes or making them different like >>36121845
>>36120139 suggest.
>>
This thread ended over 100 posts ago. Is there any reason you guys haven't taken this to the Exalted General where it belongs?
>>
>>36121920
>Well, Dragon-blooded for one.
Eh, large enough clan of inbred goodblooded might work actually.
Also, I'm not defending the developers being lazy. Lets all admit it, whatever you think of half castes, the real reason they have access to their parents charms is because it takes about a paragraph of rules and 0 thought, as opposed to making separate "charm trees" for each type of half caste.
>>
>>36121920
I picked the wrong anon, I actually meant to reply to you, that I see no reason for them to have any "special" flavored abilities. They can just have enlightened Essence, which makes them already very special, and gives them a enormous advantage over other mortals, but also just enough power to realise later that they just aren't that great. I mean, you can make them flavored, I just don't see the point. I always figure, if you have something that works for that purpose. Use it. I can see why some don't agree, and there is no huge issue against making a -blooded version of Exalted, I suppose, as long as it isn't the lazy and overpowered version that currently exists.

>>36121966
Because that would mean having a conversation taking up space in the General no one else there can properly follow, due to not having read the really long discussion preceeding this point?

>>36122009
>large enough clan of inbred goodblooded might work actually
The issue there is that Dragon-blooded were thought up before god-blooded were.

to be fair, godblooded were just as lazily implemented as half castes. Spirit charms just suck, so there was much less bitching.
>>
>>36122045
>overpowered version
I think "gamebreaking" is probably a better word. Its not that they are too powerful, if yo assume a Solar game, its more that breeding a bunch of people capable of wyld-shaping, is a problem.

As a matter of fact, I wouldn't even mind Lunar "half-castes, if they ditch the dumb name, since Lunars already have a thing with breeding going on. Making beastmen children of Lunar "special" works, in principle, completly fine.
>>
>>36122120
All -blooded were pretty terrible in design. But children of ghosts, gods and fae having flavored abilities works better because their parents are actually, fundamentally, different beings. Solars, are augmented humans. Their fundamental human nature is a big deal in Exalted, at least in theory. Having their children all of a sudden being not so human anymore, doesn't really work with that in my eyes. Which is why heroic mortal works, but flavored splat doesn't.
Lunar, or Infernal, for example, having children with special flavored abilities works out a lot better because they are a lot about shedding their former humanity.
>>
>>36122191
>all of a sudden
You do realize that half castes were a thing since basically the beginning of exalted right?
