/tg/ - Traditional Games

You can safely conclude two things from your first real day of travel.

The first is: roads are great, because caravans are very bumpy and uncomfortable on rough ground, even when crossing plains; fortunately the land is flat despite being hidden by grass that is often tall, and the patches of padded earth that came mostly from constant passage are a relief, but insufficient. By the time you arrive, your backside is rather sore, but at least you didn't tire your legs too much.

The second is: once the sun falls, you stop travelling, and you were very lucky to have met this caravan and that its occupants were eager to offer you a passage (well, one of them at least) because otherwise you would have needed to walk at least one hour in deep darkness.

The third is: kids love Tahenohan, and especially love pulling her pointy ears.

The village of Palmwhatever is rather unimpressive, although that may depend on the fact you arrived at twilight. Fortunately, its inhabitants are used to receive new visitors and colonists until later than an ordinary town would, and you are greeted by what appears to be volunteer militia.

It's a group of three people, all rather young-looking; there's one short, blond and bunny-eared boy, an older-looking boy with a ponytail and a short girl, with long but very messy black hair that's a little farther from the other two and either dozing off or staring at nothing. They are all wearing relatively simple boiled leather armour with a chequered blue and white insignia that you can only see in the middle of their chest once they get within appreciable distance. After all, if it wasn't for the lantern you couldn't see anything.

"And you're good to go!", the bunnyboy claims once he finishes the routine check, which amounted to peeking inside the caravan, "Let us escort you to an available lodging".

>"Tiefling" and "Aasimar" are terms that come from D&D, but this isn't D&D. When /tg/ voted for a "tiefling" I interpreted that as the closest in-world equivalent, which is someone of demon blood. The academic in-setting term is "Cambion", but "Tiefling" could very well be one of their other common-use names belonging to the region Lillith comes from.
>This doesn't imply the existence of the rest of D&D's cosmology. There are no such things as "angels" that you know of, which means there can't be angel half-breeds. Simple as that.
No Tieflings.

"Thank you", you answer the yet unnamed bunnyboy as Jacob and Liebel disembark from the caravan, if anything just to stretch their legs a bit. Your own group does the same while you talk with what seems to be the local militia, "What kind of lodgings are you moving us to?".

"Oh, well, it's just temporary ones", he smiles brightly, showing a certain confidence with this routine, "The village chief decided that letting everyone put tents up was getting messy, so we're only using what permanent structures we have and put as much effort as possible into building more".

"I see", that makes sense, you wouldn't want there to be an impromptu camp where nobody knows where to put up a tent and you might wake up one day and discover you have two more families of neighbours right where you were planning to dig a latrine. You suppose it also helps keep tabs on who comes and who goes. Especially who comes, though, "So what about those who stay? Do they get homes too?".

"We're doing our best to build them. They have requested help from the volunteer army to that purpose", he explains with an ever present smile, "There's some empty lodgings still, but it's nowhere close to luxury. Still, it's a solid roof to sleep under".

"Good, but zat will have to change", Luna nods as she mutters something about her plans.

Even though it's night and it's difficult to see around because of the darkness, you can spy plenty of structures around you. You think this village is already well past its first hundred inhabitants. Not bad... And also lots of work for you.

"I'm Lillith Taieart", you decide to introduce yourself to the bunnyboy, "What's your name?".

"Syoun", he answers, "This one over here is Rudy, and the girl is Mako".

"Mache", Rudy corrects him, "... I think".

"Make. Well, something like that, she's not very talkative", he doesn't seem overly concerned.

"Who's the village chief?", you ask next.

"Oh, his name's Octavius Proust, I think he's asleep already but he can be the first person you meet tomorrow, if you want. He'll likely want to see the newcomers. He has puffy black hair that do those small twirls all around themselves".

"Curls", Rudy saves the day again.

"Curls, yeah".

"Is it just the three of you? The volunteers, I mean", you give a brief look around but there doesn't seem to be anyone else around at this time. It's understandable since it's relatively late, although some houses (more like freshly built shacks to be honest) do have lights coming from inside. Candlelight, considering the intensity.

"Nah, there's about a dozen, we're the ones stuck on night guard duty. Oh, not that I'm complaining, it's better than doing the lumber routine".

"Our leader is still out somewhere", Rudy explains, anticipating your possible question, "She insists in doing a quick patrol every night".

"She can take care of herself, have you seen her when the gnolls invaded?".

"Yeah that was awesome, she totally made a troll explode in one hit".

You get the feeling this "leader" isn't much of an ordinary person. "How many people live here?".

"Uh? About... Two hundred?", Syoun got distracted fast with the talk of their awesome leader, but you assume his estimate isn't too far from the truth.

"What about that house over there?", you point out in the distance as you squint your own eyes to make sure you're not seeing things, "There's some sort of light coming out from a window, I think... But it's behind some woods, why is it so far from the rest?".

It takes both Syoun and Rudy a bit of squinting of their own before they see what you're talking about, confirming that it's just not an illusion of yours. "Oh!", goes the bunnyboy, "That house!".

"It's not even really woods, it's just a tiny copse", Rudy shrugs, "Ten trees or so".

"That house is... For a special guest", Syoun explains, "I don't know about the light but I think it's magic".

Magic? "By the way, did you see a horned girl around?".

"A horned girl?", they instinctively look up at your own horns.

"She travels in the company of someone else and has a thing for rockets".

"OH!", Syoun points at you, then at the house in the distance, "Oh, that girl! Yeah, it's the talk of the day!".

"Your talk of the day", Rudy points out.

"She's a magician! Some kind of autochton. Came out of nowhere, asked to borrow a house for a bit, and then she just comes and goes on her magic broom".

"She's an autarch and it's a magic staff", Rudy sounds way too used to this routine.

"Is she your leader?", you ask.

"Eh? Ah, no", Syoun sounds a little disappointed, "She's not. I don't even know where she is, do you have any idea?".

Rudy shrugs, "She's a wizard, she comes and goes at her own whim".

"Aw, drat", he sighs, "I hope she'll be back tonight, she's got quite a figure".

"So, who is your leader?", you wonder.

"Her name's Agnes", Syoun explains, "She's a knight of Prontera, volunteered to lead our brigade. Best captain we could ask for, she always encourages us and never forces us to work ourselves out to death", he nods to himself, proud of his statement.

>"Can I meet this wizard?".

Aha, finally we can find her!
>>
Your eagerness nearly takes the best of you and you stop yourself from asking to meet this wizard at the last moment. Those two just told you that they have no idea where she is and that she comes and goes at her own whim. You are therefore forced to be a bit more cautious about it: "Do you have any clue when I might meet this wizard?".

The two boys look at each other. You can't help but notice the girl is following but lagging behind. You've seen that walk, you've seen that distracted look of someone who's head is somewhere else, up in the air; she's droning about convincingly enough to pretend she's doing her job, but she's not contributing anything at all and probably doesn't even want to be there.

Which is odd, since they're supposed to be volunteers.

"No idea", Syoun shakes his head, "But she travels at night, so maybe you can see her during daytime?". He's clearly just guessing.

"What about your leader? Agnes, was it?".

"Ah, she should be back soon", he perks his bunny ears and turns them around a bit like you've seen Bryld do, "Maybe you want to settle down first? I'm sure you must be tired".

You are, but the communal welcoming house is really just a larger than usual shack.

There are a four thin wooden poles to support a roof that clearly wasn't made to last long, like the rest of this structure, and two dozen very simple cots, barely worth of being called even that, are spread along the floor. This is nothing more than a sleeping room, and yet it looks very used. You suppose that you were lucky to be the only travellers tonight, because this place was meant to accommodate for much more people.

With a dejected sigh, Bryld puts her rucksack down, claiming one of the cots at random. Luna and Tahenohan go right next to her, with the half-elf staring at you while patting the cot.

She'll have to wait, though.

You motion for Tahenohan to wait there as you go back outside with the three volunteers. They are carrying simple-looking spears and a dagger on their belt, pieces of clearly standardized equipment they must have had in large quantities back in Prontera, or Izulde, or wherever their expedition started from.

"Do you have baths here, by the way?", you ask, a curiosity that isn't devoid of necessity, but from the looks you see you already know you won't like the answer.

"Er, no", Syoun admits, "We still don't have an aqueduct or running water. But! We have showers!".

"Showers?".

"Showers", he nods, pointing off in the darkness, "It's like small cabins connected to a water reservoir, you pull a cord and water washes over you. It's not like bathing but it's refreshing and good enough to stay clean until something better comes".

It's certainly interesting and way better than going to sleep all sweaty. You probably should tell the other girls about this opportunity, especially now that it's night and you don't have to worry about showing improper parts of yourself.

And really, would Agnes come back right at this very moment? That'd be weird.

Everyone likes to be clean, and as expected the news of having available showers is well-received. Liebel wants you to go ahead without them, as she has to take care of the children and put them to bed since it's already late, and therefore it's just the four of you, plus your three-man escort. Well, two-man really, the girl... You're not sure she counts.

The lantern light shines on the structure: it's actually just a large water reservoir on top of four small cabins with swinging doors that can be locked in place from the inside. They're open enough that you can see the head and feet of someone who's in, but also tall enough that you don't have to be seen in your birthday suit by everyone in the village if you want to just want to clean yourself a bit.

There's four spaces, luckily for all of you. Each one has enough space of someone twice your girth to stay comfortably inside, and you see there's a rope connected to a metal pipe attached to a coconut, holed in such a way as to make water sprinkle all over your body instead of just hitting you in the face with little effect for your overall hygiene. There's also some soap, partly used, on a tiny shelf inside of each space.

Syoun hangs the lantern just outside one of the walls and informs you they'll be a few paces away and to just call them when you're done.

"Aaaah, I really need to wash myself, this travel was so tiring", Bryld sighs, entering one of the stalls, while Luna silently opens the one right next to it. Tahenohan jumps ahead and keeps the door open with one hand, motioning for you while she starts to take the tunic off herself.

You're used to Tahenohan's antics and have seen her naked enough times that it doesn't even bother you any longer. Plus, she knows about your groin, so you're more than certain she won't make a fuss.

You enter the stall with your half-elf friend and get undressed; you both hang your clothes on the swinging door, which you lock to the structure with a small steel hook to make sure it doesn't accidentally open with a stiff breeze. It's a little awkward with Tahenohan pressing against you like that, staring expectantly at the coconut as you pull the rope.

"Kuha~" she goes as water washes over your bodies. It's cold, but pleasantly so, especially considering the warm weather, even at night. You have time to wash some of the sweat away from you, but with Tahenohan trying to do the same it gets difficult, especially as her head keeps pressing against your breast and you have to be careful to not get your hand tangled in her hair. The fact that she seems to have a lot of fun claiming the soap all for herself and then only using it on you doesn't really make things better, since she somehow manages to just keep tickling you. Not so accidentally.

In the end you're not sure you actually saved water with this stratagem but it was at least an entertaining experience and you suspect it got you some weird looks... Or maybe they were the looks of someone who wanted to join, you're pretty sure it's the latter with the volunteers but you can't be absolutely certain since they're a bit far away from you. Respectfully so.

Once you're done, you put your clothes back on and make sure Tahenohan does the same before opening the door again. As expected, you two are the last ones out, but then again you had to do twice the work in half the space.

You make a waving motion to the volunteers who get back up and join you, but you are interrupted by the quick approach of a large creature, ridden by an armoured knight.

You recognize the large, flightless bird as a PecoPeco, a giant, tucan-beaked being that is traditionally ridden by Prontera knights and, oddly, more suited to this place than Prontera itself due to the tropical weather. The woman riding it is of average height and in well-polished metal armour, heavy enough to make you feel its toughness by just looking at it, but not enough to make her look like a walking tin can. She wears her brown hair into a long twintail that flutters in the wind as she rides, stopping a few steps ahead of you.

"Greetings! New arrivals, eh?", her voice is tomboyish but cordial and she hops down from her saddle with enviable agility considering she's in armour, "Welcome to Palmville! Or New Royo, depends on who you ask. It's Palmville if you ask me. I made it up".

"Welcome back, captain!", the three volunteers rush to greet her. Even the girl. Agnes flashes all of them a smile and then ruffles the girl's head, making her messy hair even messier, "Thank you, thank you! And you, have you been a good girl? Did you train properly today?".

"Eh? Eh... E... Erh... Uhm...", the militia girl goes, her eyes bouncing around as she tries to look at her in the eyes while she tries not to at the same time until Agnes looks up at Rudy, "Has she?".

"She has", he simply says, and this seems enough for Agnes that gives everyone a pat on the shoulder. "Good, good! Now be a darling and help me take my armour off".

And she lets Syoun help her take the armour off. It doesn't look actually difficult and you're sure she can do it herself, but then again after a long day you too wouldn't feel like doing even such a simple task yourself. She flashes your group a smile, "So, newcomers eh? Are you settlers too? You don't look the part. You look more like... Specialists".

Hey, what are Lillith's eye colors? Are we going to decide it later?
>>
"We're explorers", you decide to do a bit of introductions, "Bryld here is a cartographer and Luna is an architect".

They both do a courteous bow. "I will be staying here for a while", Luna then adds, "I need to work on ze projects for this village".

"Oh, that's great!", as expected, it doesn't take long for Agnes to take her armour off, though it certainly was easier with the bunnyboy helping. Beneath the layers of steel, she is wearing some padding and a simple but feminine-looking chemise that isn't refined enough to make anyone feel sorry if it gets drenched in sweat. "Thanks Syoun, you're a darling. Could you drop all that steel on my bed while you three go hit the sack? Leave these people to me".

"Yes, captain", he goes, and the three volunteers leave, with their captain's armour and PecoPeco in tow. Agnes sighs as she enters one of the shower stalls and begins undoing her twintails, "So you're here to explore?".

"I'm also here to do a population census, on behalf of the Duke", you add, feeling it's important.

"Oh? A population census?", she smiles at you from behind the closed door. You can see her face and her feet but that's about it, "My, this place is really growing! I remember when we just arrived, there was nothing at all. Well, sure, we did set up camp a lot farther North, but I didn't imagine things got ahead so much here, until we were asked to send some volunteers over", she chuckles as she hangs her clothes over the wooden door, "And I thought there was an invasion or something. Good thing they just needed labour!".

Good thing indeed.

"How was the patrol?", you ask.

"Nothing special, same as usual", she shrugs as she pulls the rope to let water flow on her face, washing her hair and body, "No hostiles in sight. I guess I'm just a bit paranoid from all the trouble we had up North".

"Trouble? What kind of trouble?", you ask.

"Oh, all sorts. First a place full of bulettes, giant burrowing bugs, a nest of basilisks and some underwater aberrations all roaming beneath the most fertile soil we had available nearby", she talks of all that like it was an interesting walk in the park or just a merry deviation from a routine, "Then an army of gnolls and trolls appearing out of nowhere. I wonder what we'll get next. Pirates? Heh", she chuckles, "Might as well...".

You wonder if you should start to feel concerned. Her tone says you shouldn't, but then again she might be one of those heroic freaks for which fighting while vastly outnumbered is like a birthday party. And considering she allegedly exploded a troll in one hit she might just be.

"What about the wizard that lives here?", you decide to change topic, "Do you know her?".

"Oh! Astreya?", she asks, an interested glint in her eye, "The brilliant star rocket. Yes, I've met her, but she seems to be busy with something and we couldn't quite have an evening amongst girls, sipping tea and then talking until it's sleepover time", she sighs, "It's hard to find time for these small things, but they're very important. Battlefields are rough and everything, so I have to cut my space for those activities when I can".

You guess she has a point, you don't think battlefields feature tea parties, but then again you've never been in either so what do you know?

"Do you know when I might meet her?", you ask.

"Mh, I don't. She'll probably be around tomorrow but I'll be out for business", she sighs, "If you can keep her around until evening we can have an evening together. Just us girls, you know? Kick back and relax a bit", she smiles as if implicitly inviting you.

>"That's kind of you. Thanks, I'll try to meet her tomorrow".

A census in a small village like this shouldn't take too long, should be able to fit it in as well.
Note: Remember to ask the ones in the communal house if they're planning to stay and move on.

With that, goodnight, got an exam early in the morning.

"That's kind of you, thanks", settings with just girls tend to be relaxing, if sometimes a bit weird, and you might just need to relax. Well, to be completely honest, you've been in the company of nothing but girls for practically all the way to this village, so it's not like you're suffering from male poisoning or anything. The point is: accepting her offer is both courtesy and convenience, "I'll try to meet her tomorrow and ask her to stop for the evening".

"You have my thanks", she answers as she finishes soaping herself up before pouring more water to wash it all off, "By the way, do you have any preferences on lodgings? We have a few empty shacks still. Your architect friend is going to stay here and make projects, right? I can talk to the chief and see if we can settle her in the mansion".

You wonder if that larger house you've seen before is the mansion she's talking about, but it's too dark to make further details out. Luna gives her a nod in answer, "Thank you", she also says, but stops at that.

"Of course you're all my guests tomorrow", she smiles at you as she finishes her shower and relaxes a bit before starting to dress herself up again, "So don't worry about your first night. Well, second, you'll have to spend the first at the communal house, but don't worry! It's just once, nobody stays there long".

At least she realizes it's barely an accommodation at all.

Once she is decent again, she walks out and joins you. Compared to you she's a bit shorter, and with her hair down she looks even more so, but there's a confident air about her that shows more strength than her already quite athletic frame advertises, "I don't think the village chief will like being woken up at this time, so if you've got any further questions, you can just ask me".

Jesus, man, what happened to your space bar?

That aside, I second your questions.
>>
"Is there a high concentration of werefolk here?", you ask, and Agnes blinks a few times as she thinks.

"Mh... Nothing special, I guess?", she shrugs, "I don't really bother counting up people like that, I mean unless it was, like, all weres I wouldn't even notice. Probably".

"What about monsters?", you ask.

"No monsters around that I have seen. Well, not right around the village", she immediately specifies, "I haven't been too far out, mine is just a patrol, not a proper exploration. That's up to you", and she flashes you a smile, "But you'll be fine in the immediate surroundings. The fauna's rather peaceful too. I heard there's harpies around somewhere, I think someone sighted a flock somewhere around here, they might be attracted by the sudden spike in population...", she then looks your group over, confirms you're all women and just shrugs, "But don't worry, you'll be fine".

Having no further questions you can think of, you bid Agnes goodnight and she does the same, escorting you to the temporary lodgings before bidding you goodnight again.

Once you're back in that structure you're glad you feel at least fresh and clean and for once you're thankful it's warm too because this is the sort of structure that would be cold already from the end of summer: large, open spaces, cots that barely count as such... The humidity would kill you in a more temperate location. Fortunately, you're in tropical weather.

Tahenohan again decides to snuggle on you, apparently deciding that your breasts are her favourite cushions. Not that you can blame her, they do look comfortable if you may say so yourself, and seeing her sleep there a few times already has convinced you that they must be comfortable. It's a good thing she's so lightweight too, or she would make you very uncomfortable instead.

And since you're all tired from a long trip, it doesn't take you much to fall asleep.

Ha ha. Ha.
>>
The village is a lot busier during daytime.

Everyone went to bed early in the evening, meaning everyone got up earlier than you, and when you open your eyes you already hear the familiar commotion of a large amount of people doing all sorts of chores and starting to work already. Your nose also picks up the familiar scents of soup and even honey, which surprises you at first until you realize that Jacob went to get something to eat for his wife and children.

So that's why it felt like you were in a pantry.

Forcing yourself to get up, and moving Tahenohan aside in the process, you fight the groggy feeling away and blink slowly until you start liking sunlight again. The volunteers from the night before sure weren't kidding when they were talking about labour being needed; it seems that right now anyone who isn't busy gathering or growing food is building more shelters for all the colonists who are moving in. Which is a little odd, you don't think this is their only destination as you see another caravan leaving already, moving further North.

Now that there's daylight, you see that most shacks are, if not the same structure copied exactly, at least very similar, except for a larger house in the middle of the village which is built with a much more stable and permanent foundation, the wood is smoothed and cut into solid planks, it has actual windows and two whole stories. You suppose that's where the village chief resides. There's other houses with a lot more work than just "a roof and four walls", but they're relatively new or still under construction. Most of the about 200 people in this place still live in shacks.

Bryld moans and grumbles a little in her sleep, Luna is already up and brushing her hair, and Tahenohan is still sleeping like a log.

Time to set your priorities straight.

>Get everyone to wake up, go meet the village chief.
>Meet the village chief alone.

You decide that you should do everything together in order to save time. After all, you are working as a group, even though technically speaking Luna is about to leave your company; or rather, you're going to leave her behind, but that was part of the agreement.

You shake both Tahenohan and Bryld, prodding them gently but firmly until they're awake, which fortunately doesn't take much. "We have another long day ahead", you inform both of them and they grudgingly have to admit that you are right and it's time to get up.

Once you get out of the temporary lodging you have the chance to meet a large group of people cooking on several cauldrons: mostly women with young children, but not exclusively. They all greet you eagerly, taking the chance to get to know the fresh meat first, and fill you with both questions and warm grub, so in the end it's a fair trade considering you're getting a nutritious breakfast in exchange for sharing your name and your business as explorers, and censor too.

You're immediately assured that they'll all gladly tell you all of the names of everyone in the village, because apparently there's not enough topics to gossip about to avoid knowing everything about everyone else, which is the point where you become afraid this idle morning conversation could drag on until noon, with some of the older women doing nothing but talking until it's time to cook lunch and so on until bedtime. Which you suspect is their standard routine in this village that is still small and devoid of particular venues of entertainment.

You get the chance to excuse yourself and reach the large, properly built house in order to meet the village chief. All you know is he has curly black hair, which is enough to pinpoint him immediately as he's just outside the front door, stretching and looking around, looking satisfied with something.

Time to introduce yourself and...

"Greetings", you introduce yourself, letting your tail sway confidently as you approach the man with the rest of your group in tow, "I have been told you are the village chief, am I correct?".

"You are, my lady", although he has a somewhat robust look under his wide, dark blue clothes, which include a long tunic sewn in yellow and a somewhat large brass necklace, he has the typical voice of a very fat man. It's hard to describe it, but it's the kind of voice you would expect out of someone who should be at least twice his size, "My ladies, I see. Welcome to New Royo, I hope your travel was pleasant and devoid of complications".

"It was", you assure him. So it's New Royo, in the end? Not quite what Agnes told you, "I am Lillith Taieart, these are my companions, Tahenohan and Bryld Norling. This is Luna Eisenhart, an architect we accompanied here".

Luna lightly hits her closed first on her chest, a greeting you've seen her do just now for the first time, "Most pleased to meet you, mayor. I have come all ze way from Yerles to put my abilities to your service", she finishes the sentence with a light bow, her formality surprising even the village chief.

"All the way from Yerles? Well, I don't know what to say", he gives you a glance, as if looking for suggestions, then motions for Luna to raise her head, "Pleased to meet you, Luna of Yerles. I, Octavius Proust, gladly accept your services for the town of New Royo".

"Speaking of which", you take this chance to interrupt the two, "We were wondering how's the situation like here".

"Uneventful", is his uninterested answer, "We're busier chopping down trees and turning them into houses than anything else. We don't know how many more colonists will come, so we'll have to prepare to accommodate even more than now".

That would explain all the construction rush.

"How many people live here?", you ask, hoping this can take a load off your actual work, even though you fully know it won't.

"Mh, I think a bit less than two hundred people", he answers as if he doesn't really care, "Considering the number of shacks we built and the amount that are still unoccupied, I say we're below two hundred, but not by that much. Certainly more than one hundred and fifty".

"Are you really expecting much more people to come?".

"Well... We don't know what to expect", he shrugs, opening his arms wide, "Would you rather be ready when the next wave of immigrant comes or not? And force everyone to put up tents in the most unruly, uncouth way possible around each other? Bah. Better to build a proper roof and make people live there. There's families with children, you know?".

You do know, you've travelled with one until here, but you decide this isn't the topic you want to touch right now, "Are you sure nothing of note happened here? At all?".

"Very certain, yes. Please don't listen to the women with the cauldrons over there", he makes an annoyed gesture in their direction, "They talk so much and have so little to talk about they're starting to make things up".

Bryld frowns, "Make things up... About what?".

"Mostly about each other's past, or present, or future. Like who's talking to whom, who's eating with whom, who's working with whom, who's sleeping with whom... The usual, the usual".

Sounds like a tranquil, if boring, place...

"What do you think of Agnes? The volunteers' captain", you idly wonder.

He thinks for a moment before answering, in uncertain tone, "I heard she's really strong... But I don't know, she prances around like a young maiden and talks like one too. I think she's more of a leader than a fighter".

Seeing that you don't have anything else of note to ask, Luna takes control of the conversation again, "Mayor, we have to talk. I have some plans for ze town and would like to discuss the details of your infrastructures and ze projects about additional expansions. Can we move inside?".

Even though she is the one that asked, she also takes the first step in and almost pushes the mayor inside, who nonetheless agrees to her idea.

Left in the company of nothing but your travelling partners, you decide it's time to go look for the wizard.

You only have one lead: she travels at night and the home in the outskirts of the village, near that copse of trees, belongs to her. Or at least that's where the villagers keep her. Might be a smart move, not having her too close to the rest, but you have to admit that, in bright daylight, the "copse" is really just a dozen trees at best. It looked a lot thicker at night.

Deciding to try your luck a bit, and concluding that if there was someone with large horns around you would have already spotted her, you make the five minutes walk to her house and find yourself in front of another properly-built structure, with solid planks of woods, some of them painted dark red and some white. It's curious how, despite having an actual architecture, this house is so far from the rest.

There are even proper windows, but the curtains behind them are closed, and so is the front door. Of course, you wouldn't expect anyone to keep everything open, but maybe this means she isn't even inside.

But speculation will get you nowhere, you need action for that.

You briefly wonder if you should just try the door, but in the end you decide she might just be at home, maybe asleep, which would make sense if she was away all night. And you wouldn't want to wake up and find strangers inside your house.

You decide to knock at the door and wait for an answer, although it doesn't come. Not immediately at least. You give Tahenohan and Bryld a glance but as expected they can't really help you there. You knock again, calling "Astreya?", just to be sure. "Astreya? Are you at home?", you ask as you knock again for a third time.

Just when you're about to give up and turn away, the door suddenly opens and you find yourself in front of a curious individual.

Not very tall, dressed in black and white with a simple dress and a chequered skirt, this young looking boy (you're pretty sure he's a boy, you know a thing or two about traps) has a spunky look and his face actually appears to be of a very odd, indefinite age on a closer examination. He has bright amber eyes, spunky and wild gray hair and a long, leathery tail sprouts from beneath his skirt, ending in a spike, which is arrow-shaped, nothing like your heart-shaped one.

"'sup bitch", he goes in an overly familiar tone as he clasps his hands behind the back of his head, looking you over with little concern, like you're little more than a lost item, "What'cha knocking the door for? Think you're somebody important?".

Before you can answer, he frowns, taking an immediate interest in your backside, "Whoa, hey, hold that tail still for a moment... Fuck, I know that tail, let me take a closer look...".

You're not sure how to react, especially because as he bends to stare at your tail from closer up you see he has a pair of small bat wings sprouting from his back, which flap in anticipation. Damn it, doesn't he know it's sensitive? Especially around there. Oh. Nope, you're pretty sure he knows, and he's doing it on purpose.

>"Do you know something about my parents?".

Does he know of Lillith's penis? Is this why he calls her disgusting? Is he trying to hide his attraction to dicks? Is this the beginning of hatesex?
>>
>>36107094
Well, think about it this way: now Tahe will ask if it turned us on, and we have an opening to ask if Bryld's tail is just as sensitive.
>>
You don't want his words to get to you, but they kind of do. It's been a while since someone called you disgusting to your face. It hurts, you always knew that, but being around friends that accepted you for what you are made you forgot about it. It hurts even more because it comes from someone who is, technically speaking, even more out there than you are, and who possibly knows where you come from.

You decide to not let it bother you more than it absolutely has to and face him calmly, with questions. "I don't get it, what's so disgusting about me?".

He glances at your tail and shrugs, "Everything".

Okay, now he's just being mean.

"Where did you see this tail? You sound like you know something about my parents", you insist, you have to get at least some information out of all this mess.

"Eh, I've seen it in the Netherworld, where else, dumbass? Ah well, your bloodline was never renown for being smart. Pfft", he shakes his head, "Quite the opposite, if I may say".

"Do you know my parents?", you ask, directly.

"Nah", he openly admits, "I don't know which of those two fucked whom and then made you, I don't even know if you're their daughter or the descendant of a descendant, though I hope it's the former, at least you came straight from the source, which means their line doesn't continue somewhere else. Eww, just the thought makes me feel sick".

Tahenohan is staring intently at him, you think she's trying to remember something, she has that face people have when there's something they want to say and it's just on the tip of their tongue but they can't get it out.

But still, this demon is everything but cooperative.

>"Can you explain which line I come from and why is it disgusting?".
>"Can you tell me something about my potential parents, then?".
>"Do you fiend all cambions disgusting?".
>"Nevermind that, is Astreya home?".

"I don't understand anything you're saying", you try your best to convince yourself that this demon can actually be a useful source of information instead of being wholly focused on insulting you, "Can you explain what's the deal about my bloodline? Whom do I come from and why is it so disgusting?".

"Well it's hard to explain to a dumbass halfblood like you because, really, if you weren't abandoned by your parents who certainly found you as disgusting as I do you would know about this little".

"S-stop now", Bryld gathers enough courage to step at your side, doing her best to give the demon a stern look, "You're being mean to my friend".

"Shut up you permavirgin, just go in a corner and eat your own shit".

It's probably the absolutely carefree and fluid way with which he insults people that makes it grate even more, and despite Bryld's brave attempts her ears flop immediately after the demon's answer. Not that you can blame her, it takes guts just to face a demon.

As a matter of fact: holy crap you're in front of a demon, this is the kind of situation you should avoid at all costs, according to practically everyone in the world. Then again you have good reasons to believe he's just a magic user's familiar, so he should be safe?

He doesn't sound safe, that's for sure.

"Go on", you dare him, "Explain me".

"Well, us demons aren't really born like you mortals are, so all of our bloodlines begin with us and end with whomever of our half-breeds survive. It's usually just one generation. So when I look at your tail, I'm pretty sure there's only one of two people you could have gotten it from, and they're both disgusting". He pauses, "Which makes you disgusting too. Duh. Do you mortals know about logic?".

This boy is seriously starting to irritate you. You can take him being rude to you, but you're not going to stand him insulting your friends. You shift in front of Bryld, as if to protect her, even if you're pretty confident he's not going to physically assault anyone, but you don't want him to see her pained expression and rejoice.

"Just one last thing", you say in the firmest tone you can muster, "Give me a name. I'm not asking for much, just a name. Can you do at least this much?".

He sighs a long, grating sigh, making a gratuitous show of just how boring he finds your insistence, "Fine, fine", he then sighs again, just to underline his point, "Deviluke. There, happy? Now do your fucking research on your own. Pfeh, like you can".

"Okay, enough of that", enough is enough, "Is Astreya home? I need to talk to her?".

Just as if you summoned her, you see a figure approach with a slow, almost dragged pace the boy from behind. It is a relatively tall woman, wearing long, silky pajamas of the non-transparent variety, and in a curious tone of pink. She covers her mouth as she yawns, almost dragging herself on her slippers. She has knee-long bright gray hair, ice blue eyes, a small nose an thin lips but, most importantly, a large pair of horns, large and thick, certainly larger than yours. They are somewhat ram-like, and their size is enough to give her problems fitting through doors. You guess she has to walk sideways when doing so.

"What'sabgbasmgmg?", she queries with a sleepy tone.

"A disgusting descendant of a Deviluke and some walking meat", he explains.

The woman then pats the boy on the shoulder, who moves aside to make room. She gives you a sleepy-eyed smile, "Greetings. I am Astreya, the brilliant star rocket. I'm sorry, was my familiar mean to you?2.

"He definitely was", you answer with little second thoughts. You still can't forgive him for talking to Bryld like that, and you actually have to admit his words hurt you a bit too, "He was especially mean to my friend".

Astreya turns his head to him, arching her brows like a disappointed mother, "Yomi... I told you to not be mean to guests when I'm not with you".

"Fuck your shit you old hag, if you didn't have my magic your tits would be so saggy you'd be stepping on them".

"You still shouldn't be mean to my guests", she repeats, her tone calm and understanding.

"Fine, whatever, have your tea parties or some shit, see if I care", and he shrugs and walks away, climbing a set of stairs in the common room leading to the upper floor, which must be an attic judging from what you've seen from outside.

Past the front door, you see the house is relatively small: it features a common room with a low table and two sofas, both in light green colours. A comfortable-looking carpet is placed beneath all that, hiding the wooden planks of the floor, and a small but very full library occupies one entire wall. You can also see a pair of sliding doors where you spy a small bedroom which Astreya must have just crawled out from.

"Please don't mind him too much", she then asks you in a soft tone, "It's just how he is. He's an Empusa".

"Ah! That's how it was called!", Tahenohan slaps her own forehead, "Empusa!". So that's what she was thinking so hard about.

"Don't worry, he is not aggressive. Well, only verbally, but he isn't dangerous", she steps back and motions for you to come inside, "Please make yourselves at home... Would you rather coffee or tea?".

Once you get inside, you can fully appreciate how... Small but comfortable the whole place is. It's bright, clean, well-decorated and smells of sandalwood.

"Coffee!", Tahenohan answers in your stead, "It's been such a long time since I had some!". You wonder if it's a good idea to give her coffee, seeing how manic she usually is, but then again everything elf related is a bad idea.

Astreya makes a brief bow as she shuffles over to another set of sliding doors (who really look like walls if you don't look carefully) who lead into a small but functional kitchen.

As she begins preparing your coffee, you take a moment to look at Bryld, who was staring at the void, her head a bit low. She notices when you look at her and forces a smile, squeezing your hand, "Thank you, I really appreciate that".

You squeeze her hand in return and look around a bit. You don't recognize most of the book covers, at least those you can see because there's not a Tahenohan humming and shuffling in front of them. Some of them are in languages you don't even know, and some titles you can read but not really understand, because "Theories on parallel parsing of Sirocco derivatives" doesn't sound like something written in Midgaardian, even if it technically is.

You see the wizard leave the kitchen and enter the bedroom, excusing herself with a smile as she closes the sliding doors. When she opens them again, she is wearing a set of comfortable long robes, with a pattern like the scales of a snake, going from yellow to dark green from one side to the other. In fact, as she sits close to you on the sofa, you'd almost say it's made of actual snake scales.

You're not sure if you want to touch to make sure of that.

"By the way", you add, "Captain Agnes would like to invite you for tea this evening".

"Oh", she blinks, then smiles, "But of course, I am sorry if I rejected her previous invitations, but there was something I wanted to make sure of, she then looks at you and smiles, "So, what did you need me for?".

"My goddess told me to look for you".

As expected, this statement fills Bryld with obvious surprise. As expected, it leaves Tahenohan completely unimpressed as she keeps browsing the other wizard's library. You idly wonder if she's looking for spellbooks or things like that, or if wizards even keep spellbooks. You sure didn't see Tahenohan hold one before, and you're certain she has none in her possession.

Astreya takes it in stride and looks at you with an encouraging smile, but clearly taking you seriously, "I see. And who is your goddess?".

"It's Ishtar".

And this is where Bryld's stare gets a lot weirder and she shifts a little away from you, probably without even realizing it.

Astreya considers your words and nods, "I see, so what- oh! Just a moment", and she gets up and heads quickly for the kitchen. You hear some bubbling, which stops shortly after she arrives. A mere matter of seconds later, she is back in the common room with a wooden tray with four cups of coffee, each with a platter and a spoon, and of course a jar of sugar. The aroma was filling the room even before the actual cup came under your nose.

"So, we were saying? Oh! Right, Ishtar", she nods in understanding. Tahenohan seems to be too busy blowing on her coffee and smelling the aroma like someone who was missing a fond memory. "What does Isthar require of me, exactly? Or rather, what do you need my help with?".

Uh...

>And this is where Bryld's stare gets a lot weirder and she shifts a little away from you, probably without even realizing it.
And that's why I was hesitant about mentioning it, but I couldn't really see a better way to do it aside from being super suspicious and pulling Astreya aside.

And here's where the trouble comes in. We don't know EXACTLY how Astreya's going to help us:

> ""Your brothers and sisters are out in the Shadow Marches. They need your help. Do not let the humans scorn them. Do not let the humans fight them. Do not let their bloodlines be lost. They shall live on".
> "Seek aid in your quest. Horns and stripes will lead the way. In the devourer's mouth you shall hear the whispers of love. Heed the warning of hungry pests and listen to the pleas of vermin. Quench the fires of war lest it burns all the bright feathers".
So, she'll be leading the way to helping us ensure the monster races will survive and coexist with humans, but we don't know HOW.
>>
http://pastebin.com/FkbrPtZ8

Rereading the dream, it seems Ishtar wants to create balance between the humans and monsterfolk.
>>36108690
>"I need you to do something" (help bring peace and avoid bloodshed)
>>
>>36108690
>"I need to look for something" (what?)
The devourer's mouth. Hungry pests, vermin.

But most importantly, we need to look for discord among the people in the shadow marches, to prevent war.
>>
>>36108806
That's incredibly vague and broad, and a pretty tall order. I think we should start small, by figuring out who the key elements of the groups of monsters are. The harpies would be a good place to start, so maybe she would be willing to act as a go between to make sure they don't start abducting humans from the town? Then, maybe we could see if she has any more ideas or something.

Man, prophecies suck. I was kind of hoping she would know what's going on.
>>
>>36108690
>"I do'nt know."
>"I think there is something involving the monsterfolk and the high influx of humans flowing in. Something about a war?"

In retrospect, we could have said we needed her service.
>>
>>36108878
>Heed the warning of hungry pests and listen to the pleas of vermin.
I think pests and vermin refer to Were-s of animals which are associated with Pests and Vermin.

> "Your brothers and sisters are out in the Shadow Marches. They need your help. Do not let the humans scorn them. Do not let the humans fight them. Do not let their bloodlines be lost. They shall live on".
Brothers and sisters refer to halfsies, who we need to protect.
>Horns and stripes will lead the way
Wizard and.....someone. Luna? Terry?

>In the devourer's mouth you shall hear the whispers of love
Luna? She's a Werewolf, and wolves are commonly associated with devouring.

>Quench the fires of war lest it burns all the bright feathers".
Notice the feathers. There's a definite Harpy hint there.

You suddenly realize Ishtar wasn't tremendously clear on what you needed to do.

Which is nothing new when dealing with gods. Really, if knowing what they wanted was that easy, a lot of problems wouldn't even exist. Not that you had many other experiences in dealing with other priests, and never with those of the same cult as yours, but you know enough to be able to make an educated guess: interpreting the will of a god is hard.

You know you have to make a stand and ensure the survival of monsters. But how? And how does Astreya come into play? Being an autarch, you're sure she can do plenty of things and is most likely on your side, reason for which she took you very seriously when you mentioned being a priestess of Isthar.

But still...

"I need you to help me make sure monster races survive", you explain, trying to not be too vague, "We must avoid bloodshed and conflict. Root out discord, prevent a war from starting".

You stop. You realize Astreya is still looking at you, staring very intently with those ice blue eyes of hers, but that's as far as your intuition go. You don't really know what else to say, prophetic dreams are just too vague to be relied upon for everything, but most importantly they're incredibly difficult to explain to others. Not that you don't remember it: you can recall it as if thought you had a diary open under your eyes and could read its entry.

"... That's all I got. I am certain I need your service, but the way isn't as clear as I would like", you confess.

Astreya nods in reassurance and takes a sip of coffee before answering, "I think I have an idea of what you mean".

"You do?", you try to sound more grateful than surprised.

"I can only make guesses, I did not have a prophetic dream, it will be up to you to see the plan of your goddess into action", she pauses, then her reassuring smile returns, "Let me tell you something about this place, I'm sure it will be helpful to you...".
