You turn back to the treeline, one hand remaining firmly attached to your cohorts head and scratching.

Lann had dropped free from the trees, slinging her bow across one shoulder as she swears. A glance back shows a very contented Jin, and Sheszka is already trotting up to stand beside you.

"Lann, are you okay?"
"Wha? I- yeah. I'm fine. Why?"
You give her a look, pursing your lips, throwing a flat expression.
"The cursing? It's fine. I'm fine."

"Then why?"
She shrugs, throwing up her arms in surrender.
"It's just- I expected to do less work, right? But shooting one wolf who can't even stand while you slaughter the pack isn't really- It's not what I had in mind."

You look around.
At the scorched body beneath Jin's claws, the greasy stains where the lightning struck.
The wriggling web full of wolves.

"It does not usually go this well, yes?"
The half elf raises an eyebrow.
"It didn't go this well once."

Offer to hunt this 'horned bear' that they want parts from to make up for the lack of challange hunting the wolves ended up for her...
Alternatively try to find a giant enemy to let her vent a bit... Giant enemies are always best for venting out frustration...

>This one went well enough to where we can chance taking on another. Maybe we can check in on those miners.

I agree. Considering how quickly we got this done, we could just as well offer to accompany the adventures guarding the miners for free. (We don't really care about the payment, right?)

It would give us the chance to interact with new people.
>>
>>36080034
so this is why Jin's mom warned us not to take to many adventure gigs, we actually would finish them leaving nothing left for anyone else before the day is through.
>>
>>36080034
Works starts early in the moring, they are most likely already at the mine.

>>
Lann laughs, and turns, pulling her bow out again, drawing in one smooth motion.

With stationary targets like your new wolf web, she doesn't even take the time to aim, loosing arrows as fast as she can pull the string. It's only a matter of seconds before the web is no longer moving.

You look greedily at the net of food, licking your lips slowly. You still haven't eaten yet. But...

You sigh, wiping away a little bit of drool.
"Lann?"
"Yeah?"
"What do we need for the job? All the wolves?"

She shakes her head.
"Nah. Just the alpha should be good. A few pelts. I've been in town enough that they'll take me at my word."
You nod, and set about cleaning up the meadow.

Jin looks more than a little irritated that her seat is covered in wolf carcasses, but there's little you could do about it at this point.
Other than eating them all.
That's life, you guess.

One thought strikes you and sticks though.
You basically accomplished this in no time at all. You might even be able to do another job before you head for the village.

You poke your companion, gently jostling her shoulder as she unstrings her bow.
"Huh?"
"That was over very quickly, yes?"

She looks up at the sky, squinting as she searches out the sun. One hand shades her face, and she whistles a short note as she spots it.
"Damn. I'd say so."
"Then we could do another job, could we not?"
>>
>>36080359
>Jin looks more than a little irritated that her seat is covered in wolf carcasses, but there's little you could do about it at this point.
We could always carry her in our arms.
>>
>>36080359

She looks back to you, eyes roving over your body; Your armour, spear, claws, legs, and the pile of animals stacked across your back.
"You're serious. I am unbelievably grateful that we've got a treaty right now. You understand that, right?"

You frown.
"I am not that dangerous. There are bigger things in the forest."
"Like what?"
"Well- uh. Hmm. Seranthis is in the caves, yes."
"That doesn't count."

"My mother, then."
Lann opens her mouth to protest, closes it, and surrenders.
"I give up."
"If you say so."

The bear represents a real hazard to human life whereas the mine is just offering earth bending services. Besides, we can kill the bear with earth.

Before anyone notes anything, I know that Dire wolves aren't the same creature as weres. They are unintelligent. However, killing off a pack that constitutes a family unit and leaving the babies to fend for themselves is too close to Shezka's original predicament.

>REQM has said that Lyra won't hit sexual maturity until 2 years of age.
Thats completly wrong though. He said we are going to enter puberty soon. You confuse that with the normal age at which Arachne start having children, that somthing different. We already had a ~12 year old body by the time we met Jin, when we were 4 or so days old.

Lyra is at least physically 14, and mentally far more than that, which makes her perfectly legal as far as I'm concerned.

You consider your options.
The workers are undoubtedly already at the mine. People who aren't spiders or wolves or harpies are not afforded the luxury of sleeping in.
The wolves are very much dead.

Which leaves you with the bear.
You rather like bear.

Lann interrupts your daydreams of eating an entire bear and lying on something warm and not getting up with a cough.
"Uh- Is your Mom really that scary?"
"Every time we spar, she beats me silly, yes. And I am beginning to suspect that I only hit her when she lets me."
"Ah."
"Also, being good at fighting just excites her."

"It... excites her?"
"She'll beat you worse."
"How does that even work?"
"I do not think she is bloodthirsty so much that she just... really likes fighting?"

"That is pretty scary."
"Yes. Do you mind if we hunt that bear as well?"

"Nah, that's fine. Someone else might have found it already, though."
"They will take the fangs and the horns, yes?"
"Probably."
"Then I will eat the rest."

She laughs, matching your pace as you start off again into the woods.
Jin is looking a little tired after her show- If it works anything like your new powers, she's definitely feeling it now. You scoop the harpy up with one arm, cradling her against you. She gives a droopy little smile, leaning into you as her eyes start to close.

You'll definitely have to get her working on stamina. Magic isn't all that useful if you pass out afterwards.

"Sheszka!"
The wolfgirl all but materializes beside you, ears perked and ready for instruction. You stow your spear and reach down with a free hand, rubbing her under her chin as she glows with pleasure.
"Good job, yes. I know you were chasing them too."
>>
>>36081479
A little praise and the wolf is nearly floating.
"Now we are looking for a bear, yes. With horns, please."
"Horns?"
She focuses on you, a serious expression with just a little confusion shining through.

"Spikes, pointy bits on its head, yes. Like Mom's."

She nods, and you pat her twice on the head, bringing a grin to her face as she sets about tracking.

"Wait a second, your mother has horns?!"
"Only for a week now."
"What kind of arachne has horns?"
"The very dangerous kind."

She groans.
"Fine. Fine. How about your Dad, then? How did an Elf meet an Arachne?"
You tilt your head side to side.
"Hmmm. Well, they are both explorers, yes? Going into ruins and such, to learn things, yes."

"Ruins? Not dungeons?"
"Both, I think. But mostly ruins. They met in one, and, ah- That's really all I know."
"That's it?"
"Well, apparently Dad thought she was a monster from the ruins at first."

She laughs again, swiping some hair out of her eyes.
"So is he an adventurer, then?"
"I don't actually know. Huh. He is a mage, but I do not know if he works with the guild. I will have to ask him."

You can hear Sheszka's howl, somewhere ahead in the woods, interrupting the conversation.
Your spear is in your hand in an instant, and Lann is puffing in exertion, trying to keep up with your pace.

"Hop on!"
She gives you a look, then throws herself towards the gap between your skull and your back, Pulling herself up in the little space and bracing with her hands on your shoulders.
Your speed increases again as you barrel towards your destination.

Lunch.

Been thinking about the payment for these jobs. I think we should make is a 50/50 split between Jin and Lann.

Our family has effectively unlimited credit at the Trading Post and the means to produce wealth at will. This is just a bit of fun for us.

Jin and her family could probably use the cash and this is Lanns source of income.

She would devour the Nemerian Lion, butcher the Minotaur, she would out-forge the Cyclopi and make Haephaestus her bitch, Zeus would try to smite her for not laying with him and she would catch his bolt and crush in between her fingers, Aphrodite would be stricken jealous by the skill head-patting has forced upon her fingers and Athena would be cowed by superior Spider, Ares would subsequently get hit shit wrecked and Apollo would have his chariot stolen and given to Jin.

Then she would laugh at Hades and possibly Thanatos for being a reincarnate.

Arachne silk, forest arachne silk to be specific, is really, really fucking high quality stuff and very, very rare, combine that with our forge-touch and elemental control combined with the general ability to be self-sufficient in any environment means that we both have nigh-unlimited funding, and very little reason to make use of that funding.

we're in one of those games where you can upgrade your town to a higher level along with you.
>>
>>36082482

And yet people keep fighting me when it comes to expanding the mines...

In all seriousness, there are bound to be problems if we make this town too terribly big. We find ourselves in a delicate balance. Given the weight of human ambition, making the town large enough is likely to force a territorial dispute that cannot end well for any side.
>>
>>36082482

But why would we?

The town is IN Harpy Territory, the more it grows the worse off the Harpies are because of the abundance of humans, which means that they would need to expand more accommodate themselves and encroach upon other people's territory, in addition to the sudden flurry of fuckheads that don't respect the fact that if travel in the Forest without express permission you are going to die, or the ones that think dicking around in the Ruins will not get them and their entire family butchered.

No, fuck upgrading the town, we travel to distant lands.
>>
>>36082482
We have no paticular reason to, though.
The silk comes from Elle, not us, and we don't have a say in how much the town grows, since its harpys land. And once we need higher equipment, is when we leave the forest and can go to larger towns..
>>
>>36082534
Hey, I'm all for town upgrading goodness.
Shit's fun to do from an adventurer stand point.
>>
>>36082534
>>36082557
There seems to be the misconception that our opinion matters on the towns development, it doesn't. Its not even arachne territory.
>>
>>36082586
Our input on town development is adventurer-side.
Bringing loot in, webs, opening up mines, clearing dangerous monsters, what have you.
>>
>>36082482
I think we should rebuild the city and have one part be a humanoid, for lack of a more politically correct in-world term, district near the entrance and include a trade center there.

We could even leave som parts ruinous and go for an "exciting adventure" tourism tours, the parts toured would be clear of monsters of course.
>>
>>36082656
Nin will be so pleased.
>>
>>36082625
We can help it wherever it needs help, like any other adventurer.
Elle will be the only one to have actual meaningful impact, since she is going to stick around, and has reason to trade with the town for a long time. Not only by bringing her silk in, but also by being the only one who needs to make larger purchases of stuff the town sells. Some day she is going to want to work with more than spider silk too.
>>
Expanding the town would only hurt the delicate town / monster relations going on.

Expanding the town means foreigners, which means stupid fucks that don't respect the rules, which means Harpy turf becomes Human turf, and greedy humans trying to exploit our land and the ruins.

We are not expanding the town, stop this retarded line of discussion, we may pick it up whenever Lyra inevitably ends up as Liege-Lord of a small city or whatever in her adventurers.
>>
>>36082656
>humanoid
The were-beasts are humanoid though. So you would have to say, not-monsterkin. And again, not our call, even if we rebuild the ruins, we don't get to decide if others are allowed in, its territory of all arachne, one a few month old child doesn't get to decide that stuff.
>>
>>36082720
>one a few month old child doesn't get to decide that stuff.

If we get HUGE they aren't going to care about our age.
>>
>>36082689
We already discussed this, and it's actually not a bad idea to expand the town, and will improve relations all around.
Don't act like the whole thing is decided just because one side didn't want to dig up the argument again.
>>
>>36082757
No matter how huge we get, we are still only one arachne, and unless we intend to subjugate the arachen lands by force, we still don't get to decide that.
>>
>>36082770
>and it's actually not a bad idea to expand the town, and will improve relations all around
So goes the theory. Its hardly a foregone conclusion that it will end up being a great thing, it can just as easily go to shit. But its a moot point, because its not our choice anyway.
The ahrpies will know better than us how much they want and can let the town grow, and will act accordingly.
>>
>>36082757
I'm pretty sure we can't decide politics until we're strong enough that mom can't walk over us with all eight legs dancing the jitterbug
>>
>>36082237
20/21
>>
>>36082770

We already had a foreign necromancer trying to exploit the ruins, and we have already had a merchant blatantly ignore the rules in favor of trying to make a profit.

No, expanding the town is not a good idea, not when the town is literally inside Monster territory, and the only monsters that would actually LIVE among them are the Harpies, and the Harpies like living on the outskirts of the town as is.

It's generally accepted that if you trespass in the forest you die, this is accepted because it's a small town with a decent population that respects and acknowledges the rules, a bigger town means more idiots and more idiots means more corpses which, inevitably, strains relations.
>>
>>36082689

You shouldn't denounce an entire side of an argument as "retarded" just because it doesn't agree with your viewpoint. Yes, there would be complications to expanding the town and this is obviously bigger than Lyra herself. However, some people think it is a goal worth pursuing.
>>
>>36082825
There's a whole counterargument involving how isolationism and lack of contact breed resentment and wars, but fuck this whole topic and your insistence on it.
>>
>>36082720
I was suggesting the ruins as I thought they were outside of the forest, even if only at the edge, so we would have less red-tape to go through with other spiders. Regardless rebuilding will take time.

On the matter of location, REQM, if you could post a rough map of our continent I'll try to make a more fancy version of it for you by the next thread, or Sunday if it's really detailed.
>>
>>36082825
Please stop. You have your opinion, they have theirs. No one is going to covince anyone here, because its pretty much just a exchange of "my opinion is better than yours". Maybe it could work, maybe it couldn't, we can't know because we have the knowledge about this world of someone little more than month old. Its just not a productive discussion.
All we know is, the town belongs to the harpies. They will decide, and have the knowledge to do so, how much it will grow or not. The ruins belong to all monsterkin, and again, we alone don't get to decide to let not-monsterkin in there.
>>
>>36082856

>>
>>36082884
>as I thought they were outside of the forest
They are pretty deep in the forest, the town is on the edge of the forest.

>>36082904
Had nothing to do with isolationism, and everything to do with economic pressure by a outside superpower which grew well beyond the means of the forest city to interfere with.
>>
>>36082904

Wasn't the monster empire fairly okay with humans before that foreign human empire came in and started shit though?
>>
>>36082939

>>
>>36082948
And they didn't do anything about the xenophobic isolationist empire that grew in power to the point that the queen decided "rocks fall everyone dies" was a viable strategy.
>>
You know REQM is doing something right when the main topics of arguments are either which Butt is best butt, who to Lewd with, and the economic and political ramifications of trying to expand a town.
>>
>>36082984
We actually don't know if they did, we only know if they did it didn't work, stop making shit up about things we know pretty much nothing about. We don't even know if it could interfere with anyone outside their territory, we don't know anything about how this realm was build.
>>
>>36082948

The human empire from afar believed they had a manifest destiny to rule the entire world. They viewed monsters as weak chattle, fit to be slave beneath a superior humanity. They conquered the human civilization near the monster kingdom and convinced them that marching to war against their neutral neighbors was a good idea.

The monsters did not stop one human empire conquering another because it wasn't there war. They just protected themselves when they were attacked. It could be argued that had they been allies, history would have been different. Isolating the humans is probably at least partly to blame for the empire eventually gaining the leverage to wreck shit.
>>
>>36083021
Actually (different anon here) we have a pretty in depth history of the human empire, see
>>36083042
So maybe you need to stop being so butthurt when people say things you don't like.
>>
>>36083021
It's fairly explicit the monster kingdom didn't do much to stop all this from happening.

>>
>>36083072
>story about the human empire
>means we know shit about the political structure and politics of the forest realm
Sure thing.
>>
>>36083042

Not being part of the Empire doesn't mean that the humans were isolated though, hell, for all we know the Monster Empire was too busy dealing with "WE DONE DUG TOO DEEP" to be able to exert any force outside of their own forest.

Certainly gives credence to whatever the fuck Saranthris is doing down there, he pretty much confirmed that there was bad shit down there that we wouldn't likely see on the surface.
>>
>>36083106
>humans were isolated
Anon, the monsters are the ones whose isolationist policy we are talking about. Digging too deep would encourage having an isolationist policy, in fact, and lead to the troubles described with ignoring the outside world and having an empire smash all neutral neighbors.
>>
>>36083078
Its not explicit at all, we get a broad overview of a few paragraphs about something that took decades to centuries to unfold. We don't even know if the forest realm had the means to interfere outside their borders. What was supposed to happen? Should they go to war against the human empire for enforcing economic leverage on their neighbors? Would the forest races go along with that, did it even have a army capable of doing that? Did it have the resources so that trade with the human realms, which we don't know if happened anyway, could have prevented this?
WE.DON'T.KNOW.
>>
>>36083140
Why is your argument "we don't know" about facts that were fairly cut and dry when originally it was "WE KNOW FOR CERTAIN BUILDING THE TOWN UP WILL ALWAYS BE BAD", when it could very well go either way?
>>

>>
>>36083163
Because when you get >40 players in one quest, one of them is bound to be an autist.
>>
>>36083140

Not having the means to operate outside of your borders would also result in isolationism.
Right now you're just sort of arguing the reason WHY they were isolationist.
>>
>>36083163
>"WE KNOW FOR CERTAIN BUILDING THE TOWN UP WILL ALWAYS BE BAD"
But I wasn't that guy. I am the anon whos been saying the entire time that this discussion is fruitless because we don't know shit and don't have any say in it either.

>>36083208
Isolationism means lack of trade and political exchange, not lack of ability to project force.
>>
>>36083042
>The monsters did not stop one human empire conquering another because it wasn't there war.

According to REQM, it was less open war, more economic conquest.

From ask~
So the empire went up against the forest, before it had settled on the plains and built the capital. And when the 'expeditionary force' went up against the forest, they got slapped down, exceedingly hard. SO they limped back to the plains, declared themselves the rulers of all humans, etc- at this point, they were so large the economic pressure they could bring against townships forced everyone under their umbrella.
People generally didn't give a fuck about monsters, outside of the ones who'd kill people- but after a few generations of the church of human supremacy, and the empires rulings preventing trade and contact, outside of the scattered sort you get in the borders, people who'd gone under the empire's banner were more willing to listen, and, being the sort who would never forget a black mark against his divine bloodline, the emperor declared a crusade against the forest, and the rest is history.

A more direst fight and the Monsters might have helped. Maybe. But the slower, more insidious approach is often harder to fight. If it was spread over a few generations, they might not have noticed until it was too late.
>>
>>36083178

REQM is busy enjoying fresh Wolf and Bear Steaks...
>>
>>36083231
>military isolatinism isn't a thing
3 and a half more hours of semantics to go, as someone tries desperately to argue against accepted political concepts existing.
>>
>>36083231
Isolationism also means the lack force that is actually PROJECTED, see America pre WWI and II. We had plenty of force, which we didn't want to use, and the reason for that is because America was isolationist.

"If I lean, do you think you can shoot?"
"What."
"If I lean over, do you think you can shoot? I can slow the bear, yes."

Lann's answer is a little hesitant. You can practically hear her thinking it through.
"Maybe? You're not exactly a horse."
"But you think it could work."
"It's got a chance."

"Good enough for me, yes!"
You shout a warcry and speed up further.
Lann tries to shout something, but it's lost in the rush of wind.

Jin curls a little further into you, nestling into your shirt and breathing slowly.

You simply smash through the plants in your way, bursting out into a wide clearing- Your wolf is circling the bear, harassing it with slashes at it's hind legs, keeping the beast spinning as she dances around it.

You can see the rush of combat on Sheszka's face, her eyes feral and teeth bared.

You have a sneaking suspicion that you look much the same.

You bend double as you start to simply run laps around the bear- Lann's balance is all over the place, but she steadies herself by planting a foot on you back, bracing as she pulls an arrow.

You put your attention to the earth, keeping the bear in place with spikes, sending the ground to bite it's paws as you let Lann work.

You laugh.
You can't stop yourself.
Your blood is up, and you're laughing, tearing around the clearing with a harpy in one arm, a spear in the other, and a half-elf standing on your back, firing arrows faster than you can see.

>>36083293
The bear looks more like a porcupine than anything else, fletching visible over every available space of it's hide. Your wolf sinks her teeth into its leg, tearing tendons and flesh, sending it tumbling to the ground with a groan.

Your circling slows, and you straighten, Jin snoring lightly in your arms. You've got a case of the giggles that won't go away.
Maybe next time you can have Jin sitting on your back, firing spells off like some sort of harpy turret. Unified Arachne-Harpy Tank Legion. Heeee.

Okay, that's enough. Time to calm down.

Lann hops lightly down as you slow, heading to the bear and setting about carving off the pieces the bounty calls for. Which leaves you with the important decisions.

Spanish American war happened just less than 20 years before the start of WWI in Europe, that's plenty of time for the current ideology on isolationism to change.

No one said there can't, I said lack of ability to project force doesn't indicate isolationism.
And the Amercian-Philipine war ended 1902. And the last war of the U.S. ended 1913. The U.S. was neutral in the beginning of the 1WW not isolationist.

Yep, using wonky terms for what isolationist means are pretty much the only way you could have continued this argument.
Semantic bickering: the true way to red herring any conversation.
>>
>>36083576
Whats wonky about that? The original argument was that letting humans into a growing monsterkin/human town would help against repeating the islationism of the forest realm. How could that be constructed to refer to military isolationism? It wouldn't help our ability or willigness to project force at all. So clearly it can only refer to alleged economic or political isolationism of the forest realm.

Except we don't know for sure if they were isolationist in any fashion. Which was kind of the point. That they didn't send a army to smash the human empire when it forced the other humans under their umbrella, does not show it to be isolationist, neither military nor otherwise.
>>
>>36083703
Well, other than the generalized lack of any kind of interaction or acknowledgement of outside problems.
>>
>>36083736
Except we don't know if they acknowledged it, we only know the human empire succeeded and attacked. Nowhere does it say they didn't attempt anything, we only know they didn't succeed.
The pastebin we have is on the history of the human empire, not the forest realm, we don't know what they did or tried in that time, we only know the result.
>>
>>36083781
That's a very interpretive way of reading "Trade bans" and "generations of rulings to prevent contact."
>>

>>
>>36083441

You know the funny thing here, I imagine that the round table discussions of the monster council kind of went like this back when the city was whole:

> Here ye! Here ye! The seventeenth meeting in the third season of the one hundred and fifty first year of our great queen shall now come to order! Now for those of you who may have slept through part of the last meeting he says glaring at a certain elderly looking spider gentleman in the back corner, the topic for what to do with the humans is still up for debate.
[An important looking werewolf stands up]
> "With all due respect, this is ridiculous! We've all seen what the humans are capable of. They've no respect for breeding rules, nor really anything else. With as many half breeds as they are turning out, we'll be overrun within a month."
[A moth ruffles it's plumage.]
> "I submit that General Romulen is a stupid face! All glory to the Queen!"
> "Thank you Chancellor Jin, but please take your seat."
[From another member.]
> "But left to their own devices, we'll simply be dealing with a bigger problem later on, don't you think. Where's the harm in coexistence?"
> "I volunteer that Chairmen Ild is also a stupid face!"
> "Thank you Jin, now be quiet! This meeting is getting us nowhere... again, and... Kaius, what have we told you about eating Mega Ursine at the council table."
[Pan to an elderly looking male arachne with a ridiculous bear carcass draped over his shoulders, looking half awake.]
> "I was hungry, yes? And mega ursa is best when fresh."
> "For gods' sake, you're the queen's uncle! Comport yourself with dignity."
> "I am the queen's uncle, but I am also a giant spider, and I must eat."
> "And where, pray tell, did you get this absurd beast from this time?"
> "Over near the human settlements, yes. They had a bounty for the beast. I did not want the bounty, but I did want the bear."
> "We've been over this, stop interfering with the humans! They'll overrun us if we give them support!"

>>
>>36083864
These things sort of imply the monster kingdom stopped trading with them or making contact with them, given how the policies existed and worked.
>>

> "She does not seem to mind, yes?"
> "That's... that's not the... you see. Not at the council meeting!"
> Rabble Rabble Rabble Politics!
>>
>>36083904
No, that doesn't imply that at all. It even explicitly says there was contact along the border. It only means the empire had success in keeping the border realms from engaging in larger scale trade with the forest. The humans stopped trading with the forest, because they were pressured into it, not the other way around. They worked because the empire had enough military power and economic clout so that disobeying their rules became impossible r undesirable for the border realms.
>>
>>36083904
No, it's quite clear the human empire enforced trade bans and contact prohibition with the monsters.
>>
>>36083956
Allright, fine. Being unable to either trade or exert military influence outside of the kingdom is obviously not isolationist and had nothing to do with any of the problems that occurred.
Now do please go inform /pol/ of your new discoveries on what is and is not isolationism so we can be done talking about this here.
>>
>>36083984
That sort of means the exact same thing
>>
>>36083995
>Being unable to either trade or exert military influence outside of the kingdom
But they did trade outside their borders, until they were cut off. They didn't isolate themself by choice, so that isn't isolationism, its being embargoed. And inability to exert military force can have a lot of reasons having nothing to do with isolationism. Isolationism is something a realm chooses. The forest realm didn't choose to isolate it itself, it was cut-off.
>>
>>36083995
What are you even talking about?

Why are you harping on about the monster civ being isolationist? It has been explicitly stated that the human empire implemented the isolationist policies.

Just because the monster civ didn't go swinging its dick around and forcing the humans to open their boarders, does not make them isolationist.
>>
>>36084064
It does mean they were incredibly unwilling to deal with the problems of anything bordering the empire, though. Or the empire itself.
>>
>>36084046
So you agree isolation is a problem either way?
Good. Let's go make that co-habitated city then.
>>
IGNORING HISTORY! What challenges do we face now in regards to establishing and maintaining a more trade structure between the forest and the outside. We seem to be prone to causing market influx, which leads to dumb traders trying to get to our part of the woods for more goods.
>>
>>36084098
No it means they either couldn't or wouldn't deal with them. Again, I have to ask, what were they supposed to do? Invade the human realms?
Considering that they had a religion dedicated to hating monsters, diplomatic envoys probably weren't very successfull, so outright war would have been the only option.

>>36084123
I agree that isolationism is a bad thing. I don't agree that making a co-habitated city is the only, or even best, way to prevent it from coming about.
Besides it not really being our choice, because its not our town, or our ruin city.

>>36084145
The town does get trade caravanes from anearby larger city, so we would have to know how they get htere, per river?
>>
>>36084169
>what are we supposed to do?
Provide more economic support than none to the communities being "pressured" into joining some greater empire with a hostile dogma?
>>
>>36084123
Thank you, maybe we should try and bring more races into the fold while we're at it. And get more heads to pat.
>>
>>36084145

The challenge that we are a month old spider with no influence over the other spiders and forest races, a month old spider that sure as hell isn't going to stay around for the years or decades it would take to set it up and sacrifice her desire to explore the world and go out on adventure.

MORE SPIDER ADVENTURE, LESS BEING A FUCKING MERCHANT PEOPLE.
>>
>>36084187
Assuming the forest realm had that kind of economic output. We don't know if they did, so that might very well not have been a option. I imagine especially food supply could have been a huge issue.
>>
>>36084145
Biggest challenge is establishing a border guard with more reasonable penalties.

People traipsing over borders happen. It's a thing. It's important to quickly return them to the appropriate side of the border.
>>
>>36084227
And now we've reached the part of the conversation where literally every response to "what could have been done" is answered with "but you don't KNOW we could have done that!", rendering further responses pointless.
>>
>>36084242

First time it happens, they get branded and thrown back over the border, second time it happens, they die.

Of course, they are going to have the fuck interrogated out of them to insure they aren't being paid one at a time to get scouting information and exploiting the second chance bit.

That is as lenient as I am willing to go.
>>
>>36084299
See, this kind of harshness is not condusive for any kind of non-wartime relations.
>>
>>36084242
>establishing a border guard
We got one, the guards at the village gates towards the forest.
The threat here isn't really, "don't go into the forest or the arachne pull your head off", the threat is " don't go into the forest because people won't help you if you get eaten".
People cross borders, it happens, like with the merchant, we didn't murder him either, but penalties and punishment have to exist, otherwise you get dozens of people getting murdered in the forest every year.

>>36084291
The fact thatz we don't know was what I was sying all along, thats the exact problem. Making shit up is not discussion. So we need to know shit, before we can discuss it.
>>
>>36084317
Border guards would ALSO help people keep from being eaten.
>>
>>36084312

We return the bodies instead of eating them.

Seems pretty lenient to me, for a giant spider, or a pack of wolves, or a community of delicate moths that people have a habit of trying to capture and milk them of their magical dust.
>>
I forgot, are we in the future or the past with regards to ESP goblin?
>>
>>36084242
>>36084299

>>
>>36084317
We actually do kind of know the spider folk can exert huge economic forces, so the argument that you will poo-poo any response regardless of its validity holds sound.
It's not that we don't know, it's that you refuse to acknowledge any counterargument.
>>
>>36084351

That never happened and anything in that light novel / manga is an abomination, or happened on a continent that was lost to the sea.
>>
>>36084339

>>36084351
It looks like the future. At least REQm implied as much in reagrds to human/monsterkin relations.
>>
>>36084357
Tresspassing isn't about a need to, it's a simple statistical inevitability. Due to brownian people motion if nothing else.
>>
>>36084358
>We actually do kind of know the spider folk can exert huge economic forces
No they can't. Don't pretend to be retarded to continue your argument. The arachne can sell silk, which is only worth as much as people are willing to pay for it, the human realm embargoed the import of spidersilk. There, no economic force.
>>
>>36084369
We need border guards who actually do border patrols. And keep the borders safe. And other things border guards do.
>>
>>36084299
>That is as lenient as I am willing to go.

Let me tell you what will actually happen if we ever make it that far:

>Trespassers get brought before arachne
>Get told not to do it again
>Promise not to do it again
>Receive their headpats
Presto. Everybody is happy.
>>
>>36084396
For that we would need actual borders.
>>
>>36084400

>They do it again
>They get eaten because they did it again when told not too and that they would get eaten if they did it again

I'm happy with this.
>>
>>36084411
Our territory was clearly outlined in silk, yes?
>>
>>36084387
There's all sorts of valuables in the forest.
And they can only embargo in towns that have already joined the empire, which is only a problem if the empire's expansion was consistently ignored and allowed to happen.
>>
>>36084369

>>
>>36084427
Thats more vague territory than really "borders".
And they might actually police that. I imagine there is a reason why other arachne don't come into the town. Maybe most utterly hate humans now and eat them on sight?
>>
>>36084482
>>36084508
Actually we can be fairly well assured they didn't rely on the empire for a food supply, as there was no mentioned massive population crash during the histories post-empire.
>>
>>36084508
Well thats exactly my point, we don't know, so we can't pass any sort of judgement on if the forest empire could have prevented this or not.
Which is what you constnatly try to do. You are claimaing the forest realm could have prevented this, but choose not to, I'm just pointing out how we don't know that.
>>
>>36084535
Actually, you're just pointing out that you refuse any and all possible methods it could have done it, regardless of how viable or probable it was.
>>
>>36084534
Why would it? The empire didn't vanish, it just fell apart into smaller realms.
>>
You've waited long enough. You're getting bear for lunch.
Cooked bear.

You smack your lips as you advance on the creature. Lann looks over her shoulder as you blot out her light.
"Lyra?"

You drop to the ground, neatly tucking Jin against yourself with one leg, already reaching for the bear, claws outstretched-
"Lyra? Are you okay?"

You turn your head to the source of the noise.
Lann is watching you with a weird expression, half worry, half confusion.

It takes you a moment, but you remember your words. Eventually.

"Hungry. Mm'hungry. Haven't eaten alllll day."
She glances between you and the beast.
"Ah, okay then. Alright. You, You get to that."

She shifts a little, getting herself out of the line of fire- and then you snag her hand, watching the half elf with hungry eyes.
"L-lyra?"
"Spices."
"I- I wouldn't taste good, anyway! I'm too small!"

You manage to focus on her.
"No. No. Do you have spices? For cooking, yes."
"I, ah. Oh. Oh! Yes. Yes I do."
She laughs a little shrilly as she passes you a pouch.
>>
>>36084557
If the empire was essential for maintaining the food movement, starvation would ensue.
If they weren't, then they wouldn't be able to use food as economic pressure.
Either way, it means the empire's stewardship wasn't the source of food, so we can rule out food pressure.
>>
>>36084560

The scent tickles your nose ever so slightly, and you smile as you set about your business.

Skin and fur off. Organs out. Bones seperated.
You rub the spices into the meat as Sheszka takes a seat beside you, waiting calmly for her food. Even Lann has taken a seat, watching patiently.

A gesture forms a flat sheet of rock before you, perfectly smooth. Your shield washes it clean in seconds. Another gesture later, the rock is glowing with heat, and the meat is sizzling atop it, the smells of cooking game wafting through the clearing.

You've got one piece in your mouth before you even recognize it, tearing it apart while your friends watch, wide eyed.
You'd hardly consider yourself sated, but there are manners to be recognized.

Jin, asleep but apparently ready to eat, snaps her mouth open, her tongue hanging out as she waits for you to feed her.

You catch yourself blowing gently on a piece of meat to cool it before you lower it to her mouth.
This is it, you think. She's going to get a stern talking to, you decide as you start to cool the next piece.

Sheszka wags excitedly as she tears into her own steak, making a general mess of, well, everything. Herself, mostly. But also everything nearby.

Lann is just watching through all this, her face set in an expression of intense concentration and morbid curiosity.

"Would you like some?"
"Huh? Uh, yeah. Sure."

You pull a gently hissing hunk of meat from the stone, and she produces a wooden plate and a small set of cutlery. There's even a little cup. You fill it with your shield, and she digs in next to you.
>>
>>36084590
"Mmf. Not bad."
"Cooking isn't too hard, yes. I just don't have any spices."
"You can just- mmf- do fire and rocks? Didn't look like a spell."
"Monster stuff, yes. Like what Jin did."
"Monsters are goddamn ridiculous."

You smile, and continue your path through the entirety of the bear.

A half hour later, the Sun is high overhead, probably past noon, your hands are clean, Sheszka is presentable, Jin is asleep, and you are all ready to head back to town.

Not Jin, of course, but she doesn't get a say in this, anyway.

It wasn't necessarily the empire that was necessary for food movement, they settled mainly on the plains, they could very possibly been the main source of food supply in the region. And after it fell, the different parts simply picked up that trade. Also its called the "Fall of humanity" and the end of the empire plunged humanity into a sort of dark age according to the pastebin, so its fall definitly had massive structural impact on all humans.
We can't rule famine and food pressure out at all, we don't know if they used that, but its one posibility among many.

If other parts of the kingdom outside of the original, pre-existing empire were self sustaining for food both before and after the collapse, then it is almost a certainty that they didn't need the empire for food and starvation from lack of food wasn't an issue.

Being able to conjure armor and blades for ourselves would be badass, but being permanently metal would kind of ruin the "humanity" of fatigue and suffering that went into making UBW truly significant. Metal does not tire, bleed, nor does it feel pain.

It's my problem with most of the pure elemental evolutions. I want a protagonist who can bleed red blood and cry wet tears. Also, one that can enter a town without sending the locals running for the hills would be nice.
>>
>>36085864
>Also, one that can enter a town without sending the locals running for the hills would be nice.

The ship may have already sailed on that one, but I'm with you for the other stuff.
>>
>>36085864

You act like our entire body is going to be pure liquid metal or whatever the fuck it is instead of our shell taking the properties of it.

I.E. Metal/Magma Shell covering normal musculature, veins, and organs.

We would never become a Pure elemental, those are things born directly from magic, not evolved into.

Quit over-reacting.
>>
With a harpy under one arm, and a satisfied looking wolf at your heels, you turn and head for the village. You set an easy pace. No need to push anyone after a meal.

You spend a few minutes in silence, just enjoying the slow warmth of a bright day. The smell of earth and forest- that mix of fresh plants, and the old underlying smell of fallen leaves. There was nothing like this before. Buildings and motors, rainfall washing out the scents of everything and leaving the cold behind.

You think that you much prefer nature.

You made fair progress before you turn to Lann, hiking Jin further under your arm trying to get a better position to carry her.
"Lann?"
"Mhmm?"
"You have been adventuring for a while, yes?"

"Yeah. Years."
"Where have you been?"
She laughs.
"You'll have to be more specific."

You snort.
"Where are you from, then?"
She sighs, scratching at her head as she walks.
"I grew up in an elf town, at the border. It's not... It wasn't bad. Just awkward. People didn't quite know how to treat me. And then some garbage happened with the elf side, and all of a sudden my life had a plan laid out. Marriage, honour the family name, blah blah blah- I just, I couldn't take it. So I ran out one night, hopped a caravan, dropped my name. I don't even know if they bothered looking, to be honest. I was only a half breed, in the end."
"Ah."
>>
>>36085990

"Sorry. Was that a bit much?"
"No- It's fine, yes? You don't like to talk about this?"
"It's just sort of awkward."
"Mmm."

You walk in silence a bit longer. Lann keeps her eyes down, playing with her hair and keeping an arm between you.
"So, what was your first job like? Or your first dungeon?"
"Hah?"
"Well?"

She seems a bit taken aback.
"You're not bothered?"
"By your story?"
"Yeah."

You shrug.
"Huh. I usually have to deal with people trying to tell me it's okay, or 'you poor girl'."
"I can do that if you like, yes."
"No, it's fine-"

"Oh you poor dear I'm so sorry it must be hard to talk about it you can weep gently into my bosom-"
"You haven't even got a bosom."
You huff.
"Well, I'll get one, yes."

"Stuffing web in your shirt doesn't count."
"I am still young! And my mother's are-"

"Fine, fine! No more pity!"
"There wasn't any to begin with. I am a merciless predator."
You share a giggle. SHeszka looks mostly confused, but she seems happy.

"So, adventures?"
"I started with simple jobs. Big groups for the guild. You'd guard a caravan with a pile of other people, keep each other safe. That sort of thing."
"Sounds kind of boring, yes."
"Not everyone's a bloodthirsty monster."
"They should be."

"Shush. Travelling was fun. So many cities- and all of them are weird, or different, or special."
"How so?"
"Just the cities. Not villages. When you get permanent sorts of buildings... People build things in specific ways, yeah? Like, towns near the dwarves are always solid. And big. Lots of carvings. And when you get into the trade cities, there's so many different people-"
"Like what?"
"Dwarves and elves, and different elves, and humans and all sorts of monsters."

"But not arachne."
"The spiders aren't exactly common. But there's all sorts of things- I even met a medusa once!"
"Don't they-"
"Only if they want to."
"Huh. And you weren't scared?"
>>
>>36086022
You tread slowly down the hill, approaching the gate.
Adventurers are convenient. Nobody bothers you if you've got one.

"What- Noooo. No."
"So yes, then."
"It was early. I was still a kid!"
"So it was something embarrassing? Should I ask Cliff?"
"Absolutely not!"

You argue back and forth as you approach the guild building, throwing open the doors and following Lann's lead to the bar.
"Tell me!"
"It's not going to happen."
"I'm not going to let this go."
"It's not going to-"

The man running the counter interrupts.
"Can I help you, ladies?"
"Two jobs to turn in, please."
"And why Lann is embarrassed about a medusa, yes."

He nods solemnly.
"She covered her eyes and ran straight into a wall. Out like a light. Which jobs?"
"Albrecht!"
"The wolf job and the bear job, yes. Thank you!"

He shuffles a book out from under the bar, leatherbound and cracked.
"You've got proof?"
"How many wolves do you need?"

He glances at the tower behind you.
"Are those all-"
"Yes."
"Just the big one, please."

You left it on the top of the pile. Thinking ahead is important.
"I can't believe you told her!"
"She's a month old, kid. One of these days she'll mess up a web, and hang upside down for a day, and you can laugh at her. D'you have the claws and horns."

She sighs, pulling the loot from a heavy pouch, glancing towards you.
"You better mess up. And soon."
"yes, yes."

A pair of bags are dropped neatly on the bar, clinking heavily. Lann smiles.
"Thanks for the business."
"Mhmm. Come back soon, weaver. Adventurers are all lazy, and nothing kicks 'em into gear like a monster stealing all their work."
You laugh back into the street.

>Divy up the treasure. (4 ways, 2 ways, other?)

and

>Head for Jin's. Be lazy.
>Invite Lann to the forest sometime.
>Something else (?)
>>
>>36085864
Your concern is fucking stupid; elemental evolutions only provide characteristics. At most our chitin parts would become part metal.

That's on top of the fact that as a giant spider, we would already cause fear in any town we approach.

Finally, your concern for keeping frailties, as if they are what define our humanity, is a special kind of stupid that I sincerely consider to be on the level of faith healing.
>>
>>36086051
>>Head for Jin's. Be lazy.
>>Invite Lann to the forest sometime.
Don't really care how it's divvied up. Lann is good people.
>>
>>36086051
>Invite Lann to the forest sometime.
>Make Lann, Jin, and Sheszka have simultaneous stroke through the usage of "Oh god no training, NO TRAINING PLEASE STOP NO MORE, TRAIN PLS NO, L-LYRA NOT THERE~"
>>
>>36086117

I agree with the training.

Jin needs to work out lest she lose her toned birdbutt for a flabby birdbutt.
>>
>>36086154
To be fair she DID paste a big ass wolf by turning into a comet today.
>>
>>36086051
Divvy up the treasure three ways, between Jin, Lann, and Lyra/Sheszka.

>Invite Lann to the forest sometime.
>Other
Ask at the general store and guild for a map of the continent. Preferably with nations marked.
>>
>>36086051
>Divvy loot in three, one portion for Lyra, Jin, and Lann.
>Head for Jin's. Be lazy.

We're the alpha, so we'll spend money on our wolf when needed. Besides, what would she do with it?
>>
>>36086051
>2 ways
Half for Shezka and Jin because they like shinies, half for Lann.

>Tell Lann the dungeon story properly.
It wasn't just "Wizards are stupid." The golems were pretty cool and a couple of the traps would have been dangerous if not for earthsense.
>>
>>36086051
>Divy up the treasure. (4 ways, 2 ways, other?)
4 ways, but tell Lana she can keep your share for more embarrassing stories. You know she has more.
>Head for Jin's. Be lazy.
>Invite Lann to the forest sometime.
>>
>>36086051
>Divy up the treasure. One Half Jin, one half Lann. Unless Sheszka wants a share.
>Head for Jin's. Be lazy.
>Invite Lann to the forest sometime.
>>
>>36086051
>Divy up the treasure. (4 ways, 2 ways, other?)
>invite Lann to visit sometime
>>
>>36086051
>Invite Lann to the forest sometime.
>More training!
>Divy up the treasure One part Jin, one part Lann. Sheszka freeloads with us anyway.
>>
>>36086051
>Divy up the treasure.
2 way
>Something else (?)
sell wolfs.
>>
>>36086051
>other
3 ways, we don't want it.
>>
>>36086051
>Divy up the treasure. 2 ways
Lann and Jin.

>Invite Lann to the forest sometime.
If she wants, we can explore and meet the other races.

>Head for Jin's. Be lazy.
>>
Make an invitation, Give treasure to your friends! Be lazy!
Writing!
>>
>>36086391

Curse this bump limit!
>>
>>36086391
REQM, if you sketch a rough map of the forest and it's surroundings I'd be willing to photoshop a nicer version of it. Continent sized would be easiest though, small details are hard and world sized takes a lot of time.
>>
>>36086669
Yeah we're already on page nine
>>
>>36086391

Don't forget that the wolf pelts should be sold. We also need to find someone to cure the bear pelt Also, the tremendous puddle of blood that will result should be wonderfully horrifying.
>>
As you step into the street, Lann follows close behind, jangling coins with a grin across her face.
"Best part of every job. How do you want to do this?"

Well, now that you think of it- You really don't need any money.
At all.

"Hmm. Just you, Jin and Sheszka, yes."
Lann stares.
"What? Are you serious?"

You tug at your shirt beneath your armour, spreading the silken undercoat as best you can.
"I can weave money, yes? I was hungry, and I wanted to see what it was like."
"Uh. If you say so, sure."

Lann has a pouch all her own, which leaves Sheszka and Jin with neat little bags of coins. The wolf shakes hers side to side, looking curiously at the bundle. Jin's you tuck away to give her later.

"Alpha."
"Yes?"
"What is this?"
"Money, yes."
"Can I eat it?"
"No."

The poor wolf looks rather spectacularly confused.
"You can trade it with people for things you want."
"Like food?"
"Yes. Or clothes, or weapons. All sorts of things."

She nods, looking content, and you smile.

Before you go, though-
"Ah, Lann?"
"Yeah?"
"I do not know when, yes? But if you'd like, you can visit the forest with me, sometime."
"Is- Is that even allowed?"
"I don't really know. But there is time enough to ask. And I do not think you would get in trouble unless you wandered around without me."
"I'll think about it, then. Thanks."
"Mhmm. Good day, yes?"
>>
>>36086952

"Blessings be, Lyra."
You wave as you head down the street. Sheszka copies you, arm flailing eagerly as she grins.

Jin's house is only a short walk away. Which is good, because you don't really feel like doing anymore right now. Between forging and training and hunting and more training...

It's enough.
You deserve a day off.

That little voice in the back of your head whispers that you just did a pair of guild jobs.
You ignore it. Day. Off.

You pick out a nice clear space in next to Jin's cabin, and you pile up wrapped wolves in the shade. And in the sun...

In the sun, you form the perfect sunning rock. Wide. Gently curving. Warm. You flop onto it like it's the bed of your dreams, leaving a pile of armour at the foot of your newly summoned stone. Next to you, Jin slowly spreads her wings, trying to catch as much light as she can. Sheszka simply spreads out next to you, her tongue lolling out as she closes her eyes, revelling in the sun's rays.

It is a perfect day off.

>That's it for tonight!
>Thanks for playing!
>Next thread will be thursday, 2PM EST!
>Questions, comments, concerns, answered in thread!

>>36086853
I'll make note of it for next thread!

>>36086726
I'll try and get one done. I've been lazy about it, mostly because I'm garbage at maps.
>>
>>36086985

Is it bad that I am expecting, "And everything was perfect before the fire nation attacked." ?
>>
>>36087036

Thanks for running.

As for questions, can we take some down time at a point to weave our allies some new threads? Is our thread any sort of different color now that it is fire retardant (red, etc)?
>>
>>36087036
What is Lyra's skin complexion? And Jin's, for that matter: she has white plumage, but she sunbathes too.
>>
>>36087047
The fire nation is attacking. Soon.
>>
>>36087119
We are the fire nation.
>>
>>36087130
shushhhh
>>
>>36087130

SO we grow large enough to have an entire nation of harpies on our back?
>>
>>36087130

Oh snap, the plot thickens.
And the empire began beneath the mad ambitions of one individual beginning with the descent of a firey comet.
>>
>>36087036
past bin going to update soon? no rush just asking
>>
>>36087036
Thanks for running, and a garbage map is fine, I just need to know where major environments are, like forests oceans, mountains, desert, and important cities and towns. In addition to the map I'll put the project file mediafire so others can work with it too.
>>
>>36087130
Shit, man. We can use our shitty lay person's knowledge of technology to industrialize a city state and find someone to teach our phoenix harpy guards how to do shaolin kung fu.
>>
>>36087273
I'll try and get it done tomorrow. I know I've been putting it off.

>>36087109
Jin is light, Lyra is lighter. Sheszka is fairly tanned. All three are getting more so, though.

>>36087047
You're mostly immune to fire.
It would be the shortest war the world had ever seen.

>>36087315
I'll double up- One for the world, one for the forest.

>>36087103
Sure. I'll add an option for next thread.
I try and keep an eye on discussions, and add things people are talking about as options- I know a lot of quest players are hesitant about supporting write-ins, and with the speed of voting, they're simply not possible sometimes.
>>
>>36087429
Hey, hey guys. Remember how Lann ran away from home because she didn't want to get married for her elf family? What if she was going to be engaged with elfdad?
>>
>>36087767
Elfdad is from the capital, so thats not so likely.
>>
>>36087860
I wonder if we've got some kind of elven noble title waiting for us.
