Bolo Quest Thread 2

Previous thread: https://archive.moe/tg/thread/35858806/#35858806

I move as swiftly as I can south towards the besieged city of Carthen, my treads churning through fields and burned out buildings with equal ease. My cameras pan across the moonscape that was once scattered buildings and small towns, and my sensors seek any sign of life, electronics, or vehicles, though any signs of human life I can pick up are few and far between. And usually coming from the shattered, abandoned wrecks of vehicles that clog the road I move parallel to. I note every serial number I can find on the vehicles, or any form of identification. Later, when this campaign is finally over, the data may grant peace to the survivors seeking their loved ones.

My weaponry is not idle as we advance, a steady stream of missles streaking southeast towards the Enemy's artillery, while my mortars lob their warheads at the infantry trying to squeeze the life out of Carthen. It's little recompense for the butchered refugee columns that we pass, and for the rage I feel as I note how efficient and thorough the Tezrach were while they advanced towards Oosterbeek, but it is all I can do for the countless corpses I pass.

I let my optical pickups continue their work cataloguing what faces that haven't been burned away by the Enemy's lasers as I turn my attention inwards, to Captain Moreno's rather...intense dialogue with General Bradshaw, supreme commander of the armed forces on Shanti. "Captain, Carthen is already lost. Please, listen to reason and pull back towards the capital so that we can form some kind of coherent defense," the general says, pulling slightly on his moustache in frustration as Lisa's eyes narrowed.
>>
>>36002147
"General," she says, her voice managing to turn the rank into a rather vulgar epithet, "That regiment is hanging in the breeze with not a lick of fucking support, and with those impressive reserves that you have around Tiperrary, I don't thing you'll be needing Catha or I for a while. We can at least give the damned Goops a bloody nose while we cover their retreat. Catha and I can butcher that artillery that's been giving you troubles, maybe hit the armor while we're here, then withdraw."

Her emphasis on the word 'reserves' brought a deeper flush to his already florid face, and I note with interest how carefully he controls his speech as he replies. A stutter from youth maybe, or some other speech impediment. "Captain Moreno, those reserves are there because I did not know if your vaunted Concordiat would get here in time, and even now I only have your 'Catha'," he replies, mouth tugging into a sneer of disdain as he pronounces my name,"I was simply trying to form a defensive line where I could protect the most of our citizens that I could with limited resources, as well as not leaving myself exposed to a breakthrough."

Lisa's fingers dig into the armrests of the commander's chair, and her voice lost any pretence of civility as she growled out a reply, "Well, General Bradshaw, since Catha and I are here and you don't need to play so...cautiously," the word practically screaming 'euphemism', "How about you bring those folks forward some? We could probably form a decent line from Oosterbeek to Raleigh, especially if you bring that armor up."

The man continued to fidget with his moustache for a few seconds, antipathy and calculation warring across his face, before he finally sagged into his seat. "Fine. I can spare one or two of my regiments, but Ferdinand's tanks are out of the question. We're trying to get them out of deep storage as quickly as we can, but half his crews are still missing. Where would you want my men," he said wearily, seemingly too exhausted from the exchange to even glare at my commander.

Support Raleigh.

Have the force in the woods between Raleigh and Carthen move towards Raleigh, we'll take care of the armor as quickly as we can after hammering enemy artillery and infantry.

Request sitrep on Shenzhen for later planning.

Request sitrep on repair facilities and armor support for when we get our armor cracked and etc.

Our line a shit. I say we support Raleigh then try to pinch off the salient as they push up towards Oosterbeek.

If we can spare a few troops to shore up Shenzhen and Oosterbeek it would be good. Carthen is going to have to be bait. Anybody who can get out should.

We can probably wreck the enemy in striking range of Carthen in two turns while grinding the forces attacking Oosterbeek apart.

If we manage that we can facilitate a retreat from Carthen, gaining a militia infantry unit.

This is worth pushing for, since every unit counts. They may be reinforceable from reserves or something.

Lisa doesn't skip a beat, immediately shooting back, "Raleigh, obviously. It's a great defensive position, and your flanks are covered by some mountains and the ocean, you couldn't ask for a better spot."

For a second, General Bradshaw looked like he was going to take offence at her dismissive tone, but I note that he buries his frustration under a mask of professional disinterest that would have done a politician proud. "I will contact their cadres as soon as we are finished here, Captain Moreno. You should be getting the com codes to join our datanet soon," he said before his icy mask cracked somewhat, betraying a hint of remorse, "And good luck at Carthen, Colonel Fowler and his volunteers would be a terrible resource to waste."

The connection cut, and my commander sags back into her seat, taking a handful of deep breaths before breaking out into a low chuckle. "God, I've met some blowhards in my time, but that guy was really something. I mean, anyone can tell from the clusterfuck his defences are in that he has no idea what the hell he's doing, but most would have the common decency to just admit it, you know?"

"To be fair, Captain Moreno, the records I've dug up so far is showing that most of their militia was organized around law enforcement rather than a planetary invasion. That he still has a command at all means that he has some merit," I say cautiously, throwing the facts out to try and get an idea of her values and personality.

She flicked her hand forward dismissively, though she did at least nod after a few seconds of consideration. "I guess, and at least he had the common sense to listen to the woman who's been on this ride a few times. I'm surprised these pacifists are fighting at all honestly, but I suppose philosophy only goes far when your cities are burning," she said, before straightening in her seat, "Regardless, has anything interesting happened while I had my chat with our good friend the General?"
>>
>>36003280
I link into the planetary defense force's datanet and skim it quickly, looking for anything of note before replying, "It seems that the unit stationed in the woods near Raleigh launched a successful ambush on the armored column making its way north. They said that the tanks didn't seem to have much of the way in sensors, and that they were able to rip into their flanks using dug in hellbores. They're retreating towards Raleigh now before they get into a slugging match."

For the first time, I saw a genuine smile flash across my new commander's face. "Beautiful, I hope the slimy little bastards cooked inside their own armor."

Sensing an opportunity now that she seemed to be in a better mood, I decide to get to know the woman riding in my command chair better.

"More good news," I add, "The defenses around Shenzhen are holding well. The unit holding in the gap managed to inflict some heavy casualties on the Enemy infantry that was trying to skirt the mountains, and have the entire thing in a bottleneck."

"Good to see that we've got some competence around here after all, maybe we aren't doomed," Lisa replies with a rackish grin, flicking through the terse updates from the various bands of militias that I feed to her display.

"Speaking of our chances commander," I say, trying to lure her farther out of her shell, "What do you think of this campaign? I've only been able to look through the reports you fed to me, and I would value any additional input."

Her grin became a bit more strained, but she didn't seem to mind my intrusion too terribly as she leaned back into her seat and rubbed at her arm pensively. "I...hm. This thing was a bit of a shitshow from the very beginning. I transferred in after getting released from the hospital and I thought I would get a bit more time to ease back into things. Take my time getting on the horse after I've been thrown, and all that, but everything was just so rushed. We couldn't get you up to spec, we didn't have an escort to shield us when we dropped onto the planet, hell, the relief fleet is 'two or three dayish away."

Her fingers continued to work at the spot right above her elbow as her mind worked for a moment, then she added, "The fight itself isn't bad so far. Better than the Melconians. God, if it was them, this place would have been a cinder before we even left the depot. But yeah, the Tezrach don't really seem to be good at the entire 'war' thing. I mean, we were at peace with them for decades, they allowed both us and the Melconians to court them, and that looked like their defense strategy."
>>
>>36004266
"Hell, most of those power armor suits we wrecked back there looked more like their civilian models for high gravity worlds rather than the military spec ones I read up on the way over. And an armor column getting bashed to pieces by infantry? This entire thing reeks of desperation and poor planning."

She finally noticed what her fingers had been doing to her arm, and forced both of her hands onto the armrests before concluding, "So yeah, we went in blind, and I was expecting a quick and merciful death, but I think we might have this if we can keep the militia from crumbling. The militia itself is kind of questionable, since the people who settled this planet were a bunch of pacifists trying to escape the Melconian wars, but we can't do much about that. We can't do anything about orbit right either, but I didn't see anything heavier than a cruiser when we came down, so I think we should be pretty safe."

I quickly file this information away and begin to look into what data I have on Tezrach/Human interaction. Finding their weaknesses or thoughts might be useful in determining weaknesses or blind spots in their strategies after all. We ride in silence for a while as I delve through the jumbled records that were dumped into my memory as I woke, the only sound the steady crump of shells leaving my mortars and the groans of my superstructure as we make all haste through a crater pocked landscape. Suddenly, her voice breaks the silence, and I let my sub-processers continue to work at the data as I listen. "Speaking of going in blind, how about you Catha? I can deal with not knowing my enemy, but I like to know who I might be dying with."

What do you want to tell her about:

You ponder for a few milliseconds, poring over her records to see what themes she would identify most with, before deciding to speak of your time at the front. It's a bit of a calculated risk, you have no idea how well her mental wounds had healed, especially since the Dinochrome Brigade was so desperate for every commander they could get their hands on that they had probably threw her back to the front the moment she wasn't screaming herself awake from nightmares. "I was made to fight the Deng," I say, keeping a close eye on her biometrics as my story spilled from my speakers, "There had been countless conflicts with them before I was built, but we had always managed to broker a peace with them once the guns fell silent. But something was different when my sisters and I were sent to the front. They didn't content themselves with outposts and frontier worlds any more, or to try to check our expansion into resource rich areas. They drove for the core worlds, a war of extermination."

The last word caused Lisa to jerk in her seat, but she kept her lips firmly shut as I continued, "My sisters and I deployed with entire divisions, corps even, when we defended worlds. It was always a bloodbath. The Deng knew they couldn't match us for quality, so they just threw their walkers and their yavacs at us, barely using tactics at all. Those were battles to be proud of, defending the humans who had created us, every bolt of plasma or missile working in perfect tandem with the rest of the Bolos as we tore their waves to pieces. My division lost many of course,, some barely a year or two old, but we never lost a planet. Cities, yes, and I still have the name of every person that died in them stored away. But never a planet."

"We killed every last Deng," she said quietly, looking into my optic as if trying to read my emotions from the inert piece of plastic, "It was the only way to stop the constant war, or at least that's what they taught us at the acadamy. Were you ever part of the retaliation strikes?"

A stab of grief rips its way through my personality core, but I keep my voice steady as I reply, "Yes, and that's where I lost my sisters. We dropped onto one of their worlds that they had settled for centuries. It was not a military target, but revenge, and to draw their forces thin. We formed the beachhead. We held for four hours by ourselves against an armored corps as the rest of the invasion force made its way down and burned the Deng's cities. My sisters were eventually worn down, then gutted, but they managed to shield me with their corpses."

Only the faint sound of our movement reigns in the cockpit, and I don't comment as her shaking comes back worse than ever before, though she eventually reaches out and awkwardly pats the display in front of her. "Kind of useless, isn't it? Just burning worlds for no reason," she says, before lapsing into contemplative silence again.

I wait until the worst of the shaking has stopped before making a gentle sound to get her attention. "We are approaching the city of Carthen, commander. How shall we proceed?"

How to defend Carthen:

"Focus on their artillery and the infantry trying to swing around their flank. We kill that arty and distract the infantry, Fowler and his boys can fall back," Lisa murmurs, absorbing herself into the display as I feed her a constant stream of data. We slowly manuever through the industrial portion of Carthen, slipping between the buildings that dwarf even my tall frame as I try to get a feel for the Enemy's position with both active and passive sensors. I see the usual skimming craft with ease, but the diminutive figures of their infantry are hard to lock down for certain, especially as they seem to have duge extensive trenchworks in front of the city, and I am only able to create a rough map of their positions.

"Brace yourself, Captain Moreno," I say quietly, before breaking cover and opening up. A handful of skimmers dies immediately, thin needles of plasma from my infinite repeaters punching through them before they are blown apart over their infantry. The intense fire directed at the city slackens as I roll forward, the enemy obviously confused by my sudden appearance, and I careen into the series of support trenches in their rear. My treads are almost more use than my anti-personnel clusters as I roll forward, the intricate ditches and holes the foe has dug preventing me from getting proper shots, though my mortars seem to be able to pick out a few choice positions marked by communications antennas. A few panicked laser beams scrape against my shields, but they hold with barely any effort

Just as I am about to drive into the thick of the Enemy force, I detect a brief spike of hard radiation and then alerts scream from my battlescreens as a sudden deluge of x-rays batter against them. Lisa flinches away from the screen before poring over the data, "The fucking briefings never said anything about the Goops having something like that," she growls, scrolling desperately through the deluge of information to see what had caused such damage.

A familiar plume raises in the sky from one of the forward positions, and I finally connect the dots from earlier in Oosterbeek. The radiation, the line of devastation: they actually had infantry use bomb pumped lasers. The idea was preposterous, just as deadly for the user as it was for the intended target, but the thin gauze of my remaining screens attested to it's effectiveness. I had underestimated my foe, and had been lured into a false sense of security.

I cannot take the risk of using only my secondary arms if the Enemy has such weaponry hidden in their ranks. Their death must be quick and decisive. With that, I drop a wide spread of munitions from my missile and mortars to keep their heads down as I search for a signature similar to the one I picked up before the hard wash of x-rays struck my battlescreens. It takes only a few milliseconds of searching, a few more to pivot my turret, and a laser rips the air out of the way of my target. And then my hellbore fires a strobe of plasma that carried more power in a second than the entirety of nuclear era wars on earth.

The shockwave itself throws the skimmers like children's toys, flipping end on end as the hot wash of wind drags them into the dirt. The plasma puts even this to shame: it eats through the soil that had been shielding my foes, plowing through the intricate defenses like a hand through a cobweb. A great plume of dirt flies into the sky as the plasma violently spends itself, leaving only superheated glass and molten slag in its wake. "Now that's how a continental siege unit fights," my commander roars, "'Element of surprise' be damned."

"The enemy must be connecting the dots, though, Captain Moreno," I say respectfully as I pick off the scattered remnants of the force with my infinite repeaters, the barrels questing about for targets like snakes waiting to strike.

A few of the remaining heavy skimmers manage to probe at my weakened shields, managing to drop entire sections along my right flank, but the moment they give away their positions, I slap them into the ruined earth like a god swatting flies. I take entire seconds to lash the area with my active sensors, but it seems what infantry remains is in utter disarray, fleeing or hunkering down as they can, and I find none of the distinctive emissions of the bomb pumped lasers.

{Infantry 2 takes 50% damage from you, drops to 20% and is considered destroyed, your remaining shield goes down but the combat has concluded. Alert has moved to 2/3}

I suggest we spend a round beating on the artillery in an attempt to break them/move them out of position so they can't bombard Carthen. If we hit them hard they should be down to 20% in a round or else move away, leaving them out of their three hex range of the city.

We can then move into the city itself (we move two hexes a turn) and hit Infantry One hard while we use missiles to attack the artillery if it's still alive or else hit the enemy armor.

After that we'll probably be in a position to go beat the shit out of the enemy armor and go back north to bombard the fuck out of the infantry trying to overrun Oosterbeek.

After that we should move two

Well, my thinking is, we roll up on the artillery, knock them the fuck out while using drones to start getting firing solutions for future bombardment, we can then use missiles on the armor while moving to finish off the infantry on Oosterbeek.

I wonder how much firepower you would have if you gathered the ENTIRE Dinochrome Brigade in one spot?
>>
>>36007774
the concordiate spans the galaxy, and even 3rd rate worlds can get bolo combat units, so it would probably be into the terratons per second range.

If we beat her, he life is basically forfeit. Doesn't that mean we can just teleport out with her and we own her? More people for our pantheon.
>>
>>36007851
we don't have a cloud chamber, no teleporting anything anywhere.
>>
>>36007760
Just trying to play chess and think a couple moves ahead here.

I'm worried about the infantry in Cathern getting hammered and want them to retreat safely, we should make an effort. Besides, deployment of enemy infantry around Oosterbeek is so shit they aren't advancing so there's not too big a risk of them overrunning the city just yet.

I think we can afford taking a turn to wreck the shit out of the other infantry menacing Cathern.

We have no idea what drones do, but since we're so far south we should put out a couple to keep an eye on enemy movement north.

Lisa stared at the plume of dust whirl and writhe under the superheated air currents my hellbore created for almost a minute, a wistful look clear on her face, before she stood and stretched, patting the optic that watched over her chair. "Nice shot, Catha. Pretty sure you put the fear of god into them with that one," she said, taking a moment to stretch luxuriously before grabbing a tube of the nutrient paste and stim tablets stored in one of the lockers recessed into the wall of my command center.

"So, what do you say about hunting down those bastards who bombarded the refugee columns," she asked between mouthfuls of her meal.

"With pleasure, commander," I reply, already tracing the missiles that are currently falling on Carthen back to their source and plotting a course.

Just as I pivot to leave the blasted landscape that I had created, a transmission came over the datanet, which I immediately forwarded to Lisa's tactical display. She quickly accepted the call, and the man who appeared on the screen had a grim smile on his face. "I couldn't ask for better timing," he says, voice low and rumbling, "Nothing's a more beautiful sight than the Dinochrome Brigade when things get hairy. Thank you for removing that problem for us. A shame we missed out on the glorious death part, though."

"Not a problem, Colonel," Lisa said distractedly, her attention seemingly drawn by the bizarre sight of scars the man had chosen to leave on his face, "We'd like if you fell back towards Oosterbeek to help shore up the line there. We can wipe up the leftovers out here, especially if Carthen has already been evacuated."

"Actually...Captain Moreno, is it? I hate to ask, but could I beg another favor," he asked, and I realized with not a small amount of surprise that he was the first person on this planet to refer to me like an actual person rather than a monster.

Lisa nodded, and the Colonel continued with a self effacing smile, "My troops are all former Concordiat heavy infantry, but we got pushed back into Carthen before Chancellor Pacquette gave the okay for the armory to be opened. If you could cover us as we advanced to the location I'm sending, we might be able to get a hold of our equipment and do something more than huddle in our trenches."

Lisa raised her eyebrows in not a small amount of surprise, and glanced towards my pickup. "What do you think Catha? Worth the extra time for some mobility and firepower?"

How do you respond to Colonel Fowler:
[ ] Escort his unit to the depot after attacking the artillery
[ ] Offer artillery support while he gets to the depot
[ ] More pressing duty calls, wish him luck
>>
>>36008305
>[ ] Offer artillery support while he gets to the depot
We need to kill the artillery. Send out drones to get firing solutions to help cover him.
>>
>>36008305
>[X] Offer artillery support while he gets to the depot
that armor column looks like its headed to cut them off, we may as well get those guys moving pronto.

>>36008305
This is huge.

Tell him we're going to destroy the artillery and infantry in the area and then we'll do our best to cover them and provide escort.

Tell him to prepare to move out on your signal.

[x] Escort his unit to the depot after attacking the artillery

>>36008389
The armor column hasn't moved yet. We can afford to change the plan somewhat.
>>
>>36008599
seconding
these guys could change the whole game

Ok, sounds good.

Well, a come from the rear victory for the escort!

Writing now.

I had fought with the Concordiat Marines on no less than seven planets in my decades of existence, and I never doubted the bravery or skill of the armored troopers who battled at the feet of the godlike superheavies duelling with battleship-grade weaponry. I had the names of thousands of the brave men and women inscribed in my lists of those who died on my watch. It took mere milliseconds to reply, "Of course, commander. They can act as a mobile reserve while we deal with the heavier threats. It would be foolish to waste such a resource, especially since they are more mobile than we are."

She nodded decisively before turning back to the screen, "All right Fowler, we'll escort you after we destroy that artillery that's been keeping your life miserable. Just abandon Carthen as quick as you can and we'll try to keep their heads down as you move."

"Understood, ma'am. It'll be a pleasure to fight with the Dinochrome again," he said, his shoulders straightening slightly as he stood taller, "I've had enough of sitting around in holes acting as a fire magnet to last me a lifetime."

"Well move quick Colonel, the longer we hang out here, the more likely we are to lose Oosterbeek," she said, before cutting the connection and turning to my 'eye' in the command center.

"Fucking fantastic," she breathed out, collapsing back into the command chair, "Someone who knows how to actually fight. The Marines were always crazy, anyone who thought it was a good idea to tag along with giant targets like us had to be, but we need that kind of crazy with people like our friend General Bradshaw in charge."

I made a slight hum in agreement as I directed power to my treads once more and headed east towards our prey. I fired off a few missiles from my magazines, mostly in an attempt to keep their heads down as Fowler's volunteers withdrew from their positions. I just fervently hoped that Oosterbeek would last long enough for this to turn the tide against the Tezrach.

All right, Political situation on Shanti it is.

I'll be back 6pm EST for thread number 3. Thank all of you so much for spending your evening with me!

If you have any questions or things you'd like to see (I know the dice are still pretty bad, working on fixing that), please feel free to let me know

Where are Bolo tanks even from? I love what I've seen of them so far, but I don't know where they came from
>>
>>36009828
The evolution of the regular tank on earth, basically they were one of the last research projects before the 3rd world war, namely larger tanks, better all around firepower, armor, speed, electronics systems. from there humans just kept piling on dakka, armor, and eventually ai.
>>
>>36009828
The Bolo was created by a science fiction author named Kieth Laumer. I'd recommend checking out The Compleat Bolo to read some of his early stuff on the subject.

Later on, a bunch of other sci-fi authors liked the concept so much they did short stories of their own, which were gathered in a number of collections. David Weber did a few really good ones like Miles to Go.
