Karas. Karas! You can't get over it. It's really him!

That cocksure attitude, that flair for the dramatic. That way of trying to play it mysterious, and usually failing.

He was never very subtle, was he?

How did he Exalt? How did it happen? What are the chances of your brother Exalting, as well as you? Is that a thing that happens? Does he know what happened to your mom and dad? To your little sister?

The small boat he's on picks up speed more and more, heading straight for the Murdering Heart, dodging left and right through a hail of cannonballs and projectiles.

You're lost in thought a moment looking at him getting smaller and smaller. As he approaches, the Murdering Heart, as if it were a giant sea organism reacting to the approaching threat, shrouds itself in a layer of ink-black fog, shining from within of a reddish, malevolent light, concealing its true shape and position.

You come back to the here and now as Mikahil shakes you. "Oi! Maka! What was all that about?!"

He doesn't know anything about the plan. He probably has no idea how dangerous the Murdering Heart is. He's going to get killed, Solar or not.

You glance again at the dark shape hovering on the horizon. Karas has already vanished inside it.

You remember what Amata just told you. Five Tails will reinforce you in five minutes. Zaan in fifteen. Tia is engaged in combat somewhere else and who knows when she'll be here.

Your main force is thirty minutes behind.

Right now all you have is the Gloria, its crew and its two Lightning Ballistas, Mikahil and Amata, and Amata is focusing her Essence on communication sorcery and isn't fit to fight.

What to do?

>I can't leave that idiot to fight alone. Mikahil, charge inside the smokescreen.
>I can't leave that idiot to fight alone. Mikahil, charge inside the smokescreen. And fire at will, even blindly.
>We have to stick to the plan. He's on his own until we get reinforcements.
>Amata! Send a Messenger and tell that moron to pull back!
>(Other)
>>
>Who are we?
Maka, an exiled noble Exalted as a Zenith-caste Solar. She was in the western city of Tianna as a guest of queen Amata, an old friend. Abyssals are targeting the city for conquest, Lintha pirates have infiltrated it with spies and agents, and the Realm is probably planning to get rid of you.
But things are also looking up. You have gathered a lot of allies and friends, have a powerful Manse under construction, and are unifying Tianna in a great nation under your overwhelming charisma.
You just discovered the reason everyone seems to be so interested in Tianna: an enormous magical fortress lies buried underground, a relic of the First Age with enough firepower to destroy anything...

>Solar? Zenith? I don't know Exalted...
This quest is as newbie-friendly as possible, and I want it to work as a newbie's intro to Exalted. If you have ANY question, ask in thread. For the setting, google "1d4chan exalted".

>Archive?
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Solar%20Quest

>System?
Dicepool-like system. When performing an action, everyone rolls 1d10 when posting. the first X rolls are considered, where X is equal to attribute + ability. Yes, this means that the more people are posting, the stronger Maka is, up to a limit of her attribute + ability.

>XP?
Attributes cost [current score x5] xp. Abilities cost [current score x3] xp, except Zenith costing [(current score x3) -1]. Charms cost 10 xp, except for Zenith-based charms (related to charisma and physical/mental fortitude) which cost 8 xp. At the end of every "session" (thread) you will be presented with a list of possible acquisitions.

Also EF does the Murdering Heart have masts with sail like some giant hell-o-war or does it move under it's own power like a later ship.

Important for reasons of kicking asshole lintha into the mainmast until it cracks.

Its not actually a ship. Its a giant demon, it moves under its own power.
>>
Rolled 2 (1d10)

>>35972618
Well the big questions is since this is a demon summoned to BE a ship I'm just curious what kind of ship form it took. It might have sails as it's means of moving under it's own power like our bro's little boat but the lintha crew don't actually have to set them or anything.

If it's like an evil ship of the line we can basically break it's nautical legs by de-masting it
>>
>>35972627
Ships in the west usually have sails and oars, Creations ships are pretty much early iron age in design. Even Kimberys Dawn has sails, though if it needs those is questionable.

You didn't get a good look at it, but it didn't seem to have sails and masts.
You slam your fist on the Gloria's railing in anger. "Damnit."

"So who IS the champion there?" Mikahil asks, sarcastic, but you can see his grip on the rudder wheel is nervous and fidgety. Things are not going as planned.

"Not a lot of time to explain. He's a Dawn. I know him. He can be trusted." You explain to him.

"He's also a moron." He points out.

"Agreed. Mikahil, full speed ahead if you please."

He glances up to the sails catching the wind, then back to you. "We're bailing him out? We're going to be undergunned as hell, pun intended, once we get in range. Are we really risking everything for-"

You interrupt him with a hard, silent glance.

"...This is a terrible idea." He mumbles, turning hard into the black cloud. "Full sails! Man the Lightning Ballistas!" He orders, and the crew follows his instructions dutifully, if nervously.

The Gloria manages to approach the black cloud without any return fire, but you hear distressing noises from within it: explosions, clash of blades, screams, the din of battle. Sometimes, brief flash of colored light escape from within.

You can get a vague idea of the demon-ship's vast size. It must be... you can't put a number on it but it must be seriously huge.

Amata, wreathed in a slight bluish glow - the residual Anima glow of her sorcery, probably - emerges from her rooms. "...What's happening?"

"Long story." You reply, without turning around.

"A Dawn popped out of nowhere and attacked the Heart." Mikahil adds.

"We don't have a Dawn." She notes, as if she were talking about being short on sugar.

"We do now." You point out. "We're going in."

"Full speed ahead" You suggest to Mikahil with a nod in the direction of the dark cloud.

He turns to you, looking quite worried. "Are you sure?"

"Just close enough for me to board it."

"Just you?"

"You need to pilot the ship, and Amata needs to coordinate our reinforcements, and then regain her Essence."

He nods, and keeps the rudder straight while the Gloria disappears inside the smoke screen. Your mouth is filled with a sharp, acrid taste, like spoiled wine that didn't quite make it all the way to vinegar.

"And then?" He asks, staring in the darkness, his eyes stinging and watering as much as yours.

"Improvise." You pat his shoulder, trying to be reassuring. But it's hard to, in this oppressive atmosphere.

With a noiseless noise like a mute howl, the vast bulk of the Murdering Heart appears in front of you all of sudden through the thick smoke. A tall cliff of flesh and bone emerging from the wine-colored sea. Amidst the waves, you see tentacles writhing and fanged mouths snapping.

The crew grows pale. You hear panicked screams.

"Maka." You were about to leap up and onto the cliff, but Amata's voice holds you back.

"Yes?"

"I won't. I promise." You smile, and kick the ship under your feet, taking to the air.

Carried up in the sky by the jump, you sail across the space separating the Gloria and the Heart. Flashes of light below you inform you that the Gloria has opened fire with the Lightning Ballistas and started maneuvering.

Physical + Night = 8 4 2 4 7 = 2 successes

Your leap doesn't quite carry you to a solid landing on the top of the ship, but you grasp one of the bone-like plates covering its surface, holding on to it for dear life.

You knew that this "ship" was alive, but being so close to it, actually touching it with hand, is so surreal. You feel it breathing. You feel the blood pumping. You feel the flesh and the muscles. You are touching it, smelling it, tasting it.

And you really wish you didn't.

Pulling yourself up, you climb all the way to the top. Here, the smoke is less thick, and you can see the ship's main deck. Nope, still surreal.

It's vast, but somehow it seems less wide than it seemed at first. It's covered in planks of wood, scales, bone, skin, flesh. Curvy pillars of a vaguely wax-like substance rise chaotically from this uneven surface and disappear in the fog above you, like a confused forest of the masts you were fairly sure this ship did not have.

You hear screams and orders. The noise of battle echoes all around you, but the flashes of golden essence-light filtering through the acrid smoke suggest Karas' current position to you.

But before you can take a step in that direction, seven Lintha pirates emerge from the smoke at once, charging you with spears and hatchets and curved sword-like blades. Somehow, they could see you through the smoke.

[IRON-KETTLE BODY] [SOLAR HERO STYLE]
[ESSENCE: 4/6]

A flash of golden light explodes from you, pushing the foggy darkness back. For a moment, the charging Lintha hesitate.

The next moment, when they finally reach your position, you're already behind them, landing on the deck after your leap, rolling with the impact, springing back on your feet and dashing towards Karas' light.

You hear explosions, the impacts of more Lightning Ballistas and the roar of the Heart's own cannons. You can't do much about it other than hope that Mikahil can keep the Gloria in one piece.
Arrows whistle around you, some impacting against your skin and shattering. The deck is incredibly chaotic, what happens when someone tries to keep up with supernaturally mobile opponents.

Finally, you reach Karas. He's standing in the middle of the deck, in the center of a bloody crater of broken flesh and shattered bone and wood. More than a few bodies are littered around him. He is holding one in hand, a dead Lintha held by the leg, its upper body pulped into an unrecognizable mess. Six arrows and one hatchet are sticking out of his armor and clothes. Hard to tell if any of the blood covering him is his own or someone else's.

"Sis." He greets you, casually.

You walk up to him as Lintha reinforcements pour in. You're pretty much surrounded by now... you could try and jump up and grab one of this ship's weird sails, but they don't look too solid.

You go back to back with him. There are so many things you want to ask him...

Most of it yeah but I doubt they have a portal to instantly transport whatever their current haul is to the Atoll. The heart will have some plunder in it's holds that they're storing from the pirate ships it tends. I figure the lintha cruise around with flagships like these and when they get a sufficient haul they head back to the atoll to offload and resupply.

We steal that for now and maybe we'll even manage to get charts from the captain or his cabin that can help us locate the Atoll itself.

Its pretty likely they have one. Just send it through Malfeas.
The Lintha aren't free ranging pirates. They mostly deal with extorting others for protection, not so much plunder. Their more mafia than pirates, despite the name. In the unlikely event that they have plundered something, its definitloy not nearly enough to be worth the effort.

"Tell me you have a plan." You put your fists up, light gleaming and reflecting on your gauntlets.

"Of course." He grins. "Well. Sort of." He then adds. "Kinda."

"You don't."

A flight of arrows break on the two of you, followed by lobbed javelins. It feels like a wave of wood slamming into your body. You stagger and try to keep your footing as a charge of screaming, frothing-to-the-mouth Linthas charge you from all directions.

This is well organized. Someone is directing them.

Physical + Dawn + SHS = 4 1 2 1 1 10 4 6 10 = 4 successes

You let two of them snap their spears against you, grab their heads and slam them on your own forehead as you headbutt forward. You feel their skulls caving in in front of your own. But you can't act fast enough to move past them and rush out: hands grab your ankles and wrists, another two pirates body-tackle you. A rope is passed around your neck, a grappling hook snags your clothes. Hands grab and pull your hair, and you are dragged to the ground.

The encirclement turns into a horrifyingly thick melee, bodies pressing you on all sides. Axes, shivs, broken spear shafts, daggers and knives, shortswords and fists batter on you from all direction as the bloodthirsty crowd tries to tear you limb from limb.

He deflected the cannon ball with his fist, so I'm guessing he never had a sword.

As a side note, the Lintha ship has physical projectile artillery. In Creation, your choices are normally ballistas, short-range firedust canons, or essence weaponry. No wonder people are so terrified of it.

I wonder how it fires, though. I'm guessing the ship uses high-pressure air, like putting a marble between your lips and blowing hard to shoot it out. After all, Creation doesn't have anything that functions like gunpowder.
>>
>>35973642
While Infernal monster style has charms for using living people as improvised weapons, Solar Hero Style Charms are able to be used with improvised weapons. A lintha pirate's corpse would count as an improvised weapon under those rules.

Right, none of which produces expanding gas in a way that can launch a bullet or cannonball to the horizon. A proper ship-mounted canon has significantly better bombarding range than even big essence cannons. That they could shell us with metal projectiles accurately from so far away is a really big deal.

>>35973690
That's just a gel of fire dust, and it only about doubles its extremely limited range. Regardless, fire dust doesn't produce expanding gas of the sort that could propel a solid slug. It's just congealed fire essence that turns back into fire when exposed to a spark, igniting the air (when directed by a barrel) in front of it.

It's highly incendiary, but not really concussive at all.

The pressure of bodies on you is too heavy. You can feel them piling up on top of you, smothering you with their weight. You'd need to have truly superhuman strength to break free.

Fancy that.

[TEN OX MEDITATION]
[ESSENCE 3/6]

Physical + Dawn + SHS = 2 8 9 10 2 6 2 5 10 = 6 successes

You stand up, against the human(?) mountain piled on you.

Then, you grab the thick cloak of Lintha draped over you, and fling them away.

You slam your fists and arms into the crowd, and feel bones snapping like twigs and people flying away and disappearing in the distance.

Finally, you shrug free of them entirely, getting them off your hair, out of your clothes, snapping their hands clutched around your ankles and legs, and step free.

Then, you slam your fist down on the pile of bodies just next to you, piled on top of Karas, and turn it into a geyser of blood.

Your brother claws his way out of the pile of shattered bodies with a shocked grin on his face. "...It was all under control."

"Sure it was." You pull him out of there and help him back to his feet. "Let's move, before they can get more Lintha on top of us."

"Where?"

That's the question, isn't it? You really lost your bearings here, and have no idea where to go to really hurt-

All of sudden, the smoke all around you gets thinner. Your nose and mouth feel cleaner, finally. The black fog pulls back, forming a shell around the ship, but leaving the air within almost clear.

You finally can see and appreciate the size and complexity of the oddly-colored, yellow-red, wax-like superstructure of the ship. It seems to glow faintly, like it's channeling some sort of power.

But, right now, your attention is focused on a giant, meaty, fleshy mass on what looks like the center of the ship's deck, from where this superstructure radiates.

Because a large red eye, about a meter across, blinks open from its surface, its slit pupil narrowing and sliding you into focus.

They are probably bringing the pureblooded in now. Not to mention that they are probably going to be throwing some sorcery our way. That's why the fog has cleared.

You act fast, and that probably saves your life.

You grab one of the few still-intact spears littering the scene of carnage around you and chuck it straight at the eye while grabbing Karas' hand (since you noticed he was just about to charge the eye straight on) and pulling him away, both of you rolling down behind a blocky, half-lifted bone plate offering some cover, effective if a bit disgusting.

You do so just in time. As Karas lets out a cry of protest, the spear stops in mid-air, blocked by an invisible force exerted by the gaze of the eye.

A second later, it vaporizes.

"What the-" He mumbles.

"Rajaan called it a Curse Beam. I have no idea what that means, but I think it's bad." You mumble, trying to keep his head down.

"Great." He mumbles. "Now they're going to encircle us again."

"They don't need to." You reply, and the final word is muted by a silent burst of white noise washing over you as the curse beam slams against the bone plate giving you cover. Even without looking at the point of impact, you can feel it shriveling and evaporating.

It will not hold for long.

"Let's try and get closer, but don't let it look straight at you. Be careful." You tell Karas.

"Alright. Let's try it." he nods, but looks like someone who'd rather charge straight in right now.

"Just trust me. NOW!"

You both roll out of cover simultaneously in opposite directions, and you instantly lose sight of him when the bone plate vanishes in a cloud of smoke. You dash for the next closest point of cover, a small depression in the deck's surface.

Not quite a foxhole, but it'll do. You dive, and feel the invisible beam slashing the air above you.

<"It IS amusing seeing the so-called Champions of the Unconquered Sun cowering in the ground like worms."> A hollow, ethereal voice mocks you, followed by the more real-sounding echoes of Lintha laughter.

<"It is, pretty much. We don't even need to trouble Admiral Hell with these rats.">

<"Maybe she's bored, though? I mean, now that she's just sunk that pesky little ship buzzing around, I'm sure she has plenty of free time.">

You feel light, silent footsteps approaching.

Actually, that's true. It's been a while since you heard the thunderbolt-like roar of the Gloria's batteries. And the Heart's cannons are silent, as well.

Are they selling the truth? Did the Gloria really sink?

You leap up, without a real plan other than the need you feel, deep in your heart, to do something, anything. You leap sideways, putting the two figures between you and the eye, hoping that it will not nail you with its curse beam with friendlies in its line of fire.

Now you can see them better: they are glowing beings, barely clothed, radiating an off-putting light. The air seems to vibrate and howl around them. The depth of their fixed stare makes you wince. They seem to be identical, or almost identical, beyond even the similarities of twins. These are not natural creatures, not even for the standards of Lintha.

<"Oh, the rat crawled out."> One of them grins. The other one mirrors its movements perfectly.

Perfectly coordinated, they both sidestep just in the same split-second the curse-beam fires from the red eye. You're caught by surprise, with no time to dodge or reposition yourself.

Your clothes and skin vanish instantly, turning into smoke and dust and flying away. You squeeze your eyelids to keep your eyeballs from floating away, and clench your teeth to keep them in your mouth.

[HEALTH 2/5]

Suddenly, you stagger, the pressure on you relieved after a few seconds.

Forcing your eyes open, you see something standing in front of the eye. You see his back.

That's when you remember something. Something important.

You're the eldest daughter of the Royal Family of Gem. You were the royal princess, the one destined to inherit the crown.

Karas was second in line. He never had any interest in the crown. when he was a little kid, once, mom and dad had told him that Maka would one day be queen, and his job would be to protect his big sister.

They didn't mean anything deep with this. It was just something you say to kids. Almost a joke.

Ever since he was little, he took that single thing, that single line your parents had told him once, probably at some lunch or dinner, between any other sort of light, meaningless conversation to fill in time, and made it the core of his being.

Sometimes, you found yourself thinking that, if you could go back in time, you'd like to do things over and have Karas inherit the throne.

Because he has always been incredibly driven and focused, in a way you have never been able to understand.

He trained. He learned. While you were studying all sorts of things that a future ruler could need, or fooling around or wasting time in idle pursuits, or indulging in your own hobbies or pleasures, he trained.

For you.

To be your shield.

You look up to his back, as he takes slow steps towards the Eye. He's using a bone plate as a shield, but bits and pieces of his armor and flesh fly by you, carried by the curse beam's pressure.

Finally, his improvised shield cracks and explodes. He stands his ground, taking the beam in his chest, and still walking on against that terrible pressure, his Anima blazing brighter and brighter.

After glancing at Karas for a second, the two creatures turn to you with a crooked smile, blades of metallic light sprouting from their hands.

Physical + Dawn + SHS = 9 8 9 9 7 8 10 9 2 = 9 successes

[Damage Weapon Boost 1/3 used]

You punch the white one, and he flies away, piercing the smoke shell and vanishing in the distant sky. Sunlight filters through the round hole caused by the shockwave, falling on the ship's deck.

Is it a 'one or the other' deal?
>>
>>35974585
Yes, save for Zenith 5, we'll get AST anyway. Then spirit punching charms after.
>>
Rolled 5 (1d10)

>>35974584
in EF's system we don't have access to perfect defenses but for high stat levels so a lot of shit we could ignore hurts us.

We get more health by increasing physical or picking up certain charms.

Rolled 8 (1d10)

>>35974588

Man, that is so fucking true. In this quest's system, we regain essence SO FUCKING SLOW. Exalted is normally balanced around the assumption that you regenerate Essence in-combat, and are fully recharged between scenes.
>>
Rolled 7 (1d10)

>>35974588
>In reality its because Exalted combat is absurdly lethal, and this system makes it even worse by restricting charm use
Which is really odd as my first impression of Exalted, through this, was that its all about epic combat and wild absurdly ridiculous actions.

Not getting 2 hit by a random mob with rusty knives

Probably because each point of Essence in this quest is more like 5-10 points in the core Exalted system. EF probably had a hard time figuring out a balanced way of in-action Essence recovery and said 'fuck it.' I'd have done the same.

That said, it absolutely is fucking crippling.
>>
Rolled 10 (1d10)

>>35974609
EF has mentioned giving us charm options for essence regeneration mid combat. Plus combat tends to be over pretty damn quickly one way or the other.

>>35974609
There are ways to increase essence regen, either with increasing our cult rating or getting a hearthstone

>>
Rolled 7 (1d10)

So why say 'fuck it' and cripple it over that?

There's got to be a better way without crippling us.
>>
>>35974600
Actually, this system seems LESS Lethal, mostly because neither you or your enemies can combo Charms to get ridiculously killy results, and also because the more powerful and deadly Charms have not appeared yet or have been altered to be less ridiculous.
>>
Rolled 9 (1d10)

>>35974628
>not between Exalts and mortals or mooks.
Well that's not been my experience so far, while they haven't been 1-2 hitting us, they are still rpetty lethal
>>
It's also pretty weird how artifacts have been reduced to "bigger numbers" even worse than in E2, with not even the possibility of any special powers. When we got our artifact weapon, I was really excited thinking "I wonder what cool thing they can do" and then it's just +1 to damage.
At least they're changing that in E3

...I never said the system was more lethal. I said that lacking a method of essence recovery - like stunting in 2e or the automatic mote trickle in 3e - is crippling. Which it is. It dramatically limits our options in a fight, and forces us to rely entirely on very slow passive Essence recovery outside of fights.

There's nothing wrong with it being crippling. Like I said, I'd have done the same thing. But it absolutely does hobble us.

>>35974630
Because it's easy and EF is doing this for free. I don't have a problem with it, just an awareness of it.

>>
>>35974638
Our artifact weapon is a pair of Orihalcum gauntlets that can turn into Bridal-style gloves and comes with Zettai Ryouki armored boots.

It probably has extra effects when used in social situations.
Or at least it SHOULD have extra effects.
>>
>>35974653
It's too random as-is, is most people's problem IIRC.
>>
>>35974616
Because this one has every Charm cost one Essence. If we would regen in combat, that would be too OP if we would have made actually smart charm purchases.
Making a functional combat engine based on exalted mechanics is a task you would probably need exaltation to solve. Thats why the developers of exalted threw the whole thing out of the window.

>>35974632
I took as baseline the errata rules. But its stil way more lethal because a lot of damage prevention requires several charms, and often. Absurd kill combos only apply in celestial level anyway, which we haven't fought yet.

>>
>>35974643
My apologies, my comment was supposed to answer both your post and the one you quoted.
Nevertheless, Combat has been fairly surviveable so far, and the only reason we are so low on essence is because we have a small pool, combined with activating two charms at once because we got mobbed by an army of glorified extras and buried under a literal mountain of them.
>>
You have to be quick. The second creature is stunned for a moment, and Karas is about to be flayed to the bone, no matter how sturdy he might be...

You grab this strange being and drag it along in your mad dash sideways. He feels a lot lighter than a normal human would be, for some reason. As soon as you have a line of sight to the Eye, you'll-

Physical + Dawn + SHS = 9 5 9 6 4 2 2 6 5 = 2 successes

All of sudden, this being rouses itself from its shocked trance and plunges both of his wrist-blades into your back. The razor-sharp tip of his weapons slide on your iron-hard skin for a moment, digging shallow cuts, then he angles them better, and they bite deep.

Pain washes over you as the point of the blades, soaked in your blood, pop out of you from just below your clavicles and enter your field of view.

[HEALTH 1/5]

You struggle to get the spindly, wiry being off your back, but he slips from your grasp, hanging from his blades wedged inside you as he drives them deeper...

All of sudden, his movements stop, and he falls down, limp.

Gasping from the shock of pain and blood loss, you struggle to stay on your feet, standing upright. Your aggressor is lying on the deck, in a small pool of glowing, emerald-green blood, its spinal cord cleanly severed by a long-bladed knife through the neck.

You feel hands holding you up carefully to keep you from falling down.

"...Should I remove them or leave them in?" Five Tails asks you, sounding a bit confused by the almost hilarious extent of your wounds.

Certainly not hilarious for you.

Also: I've never liked much how Exalted handles stunting, but I might explain this some other time (or on ask.fm).

On top of that, yes, when mote pools are so numerically small, awarding motes during a scene is just too much stuff. This system is designed around the idea of essence as a resource that must be managed.

The problem i have with that is i don't think armour should be ablative. It makes sense in Xcom and Halo when your armour burns off to dissapate plasma.

But in Exalted, artifact armour should be 'indestructible'. Having it be shuffled off for repair after every fight breaks that.

No, it's still obscenely fucking useful for anyone without soak charms - and, I dare say, probably provides 2 Soak, making it useful for us too. And, what's more, it doesn't require us to spend Essence to activate - which is the real advantage of wearing armor.

But for purely-mechanical reasons, in this quest, higher bonuses don't stack with lower bonuses from different sources, in the same way that someone in D&D only gets the highest Morale bonus or Enhancement Bonus or whatever.

Whatever you're using, you get the BIGGEST bonus, instead of smooshing them all together.

>>35975372
...the fuck are you even saying?

It won't stack with our Soak, which means we can have 2 armor soak instead of activating charms. Charms don't turn off armor, you just take the higher of the two values.

And yes, it does save us essence. If we were wearing armor in some fights, we could have soaked blows with the armor instead of spending essence on Charms. Activating a soak charm is still better than wearing mundane armor in an extended fight against powerful opponents, but being able to soak an attack by less-worthy opponents with armor instead of having to spend essence would still be really useful.

I get it, you're butthurt about not getting to stack our super powers and armor. But armor still has a use when our charms aren't up and if we find powerful enough armor, you'll be whining about the armor invalidating our charms instead of the other way around.

Thats the main reason why I want to get some useful armor for us, because when a fight gets going properly, we start burning through Essence and end up not having enough to last through the fight without losing tons of HP
>>
Rolled 10 (1d10)

>>35975444
...how? If we don't activate Iron Kettle Body, there's no soak-from-charms for the armor to not stack with.
>>
Rolled 9 (1d10)

>>35975463
When fights get 'going properly,' we want to activate our fucking soak charm either way. The way armor works in this system is that it provides 1 soak (or more for artifact armor) against X number of attacks per scene, the same way weapons provide X number of +1 damage attacks per scene. Mundane armor is STAGGERINGLY WORSE than our basic soak charm. It's something to be relied on when you're fighting a couple of mundane people or extras, not something to be relied on when you're fighting a dozen men or a supernatural threat.

But it would be REALLY USEFUL when we're just fighting a couple of mundane people or extras, so that we can save our essence for fighting dozens of men or supernatural threats.
>>

>>
Rolled 4 (1d10)

>>35975503
Yeah, but I couldn't figure out a better way to phrase it.

Point is, Charms and Armor don't stack. You take the bigger of the two bonuses. If your natural Soak is 0 because we haven't yet activated IKB, that means you use the bonus from armor. Once we activate IKB, armor is irrelevant in comparison to our indestructible god-body.

Unless, of course, we have artifact armor that gives us +2 soak, either passively or X number of times per scene. If it gives us persistent +2 soak, then we'll literally never activate IKB while wearing it. If it gives us +2 soak X number of times per scene, then X number of times per scene we'll have 2 soak instead of 1, because the armor is replacing IKB's bonus instead of stacking with it.

Armor isn't worthless to us when our charms aren't up - which is what I think that anon was saying he thought EF was saying. Just because we have soak charms doesn't mean armor will never give us bonuses. It just doesn't stack with our charms' bonuses when those charms are active.
>>
>>35975571
If it's soak X times per scene, then might as well go with the extra hp idea for simpler bookkeeping.
>>
Rolled 7 (1d10)

>>35975654
I totally agree with you, actually. If we have armor that grants us, say, +1 soak twice per scene, it'd be a lot easier to just have it grant us +2 Armor HP per scene. It'd be far easier to keep track of that way, and could end up with an interesting interaction between charm soak and armor HP.
>>
>>35975093
Your soak charms do not work while you are wearing armor. And armor doesn't really break when soaking damage, it just... soaks. it gives points of soak, not extra health levels.

>>35975108
The justification behind it is "magic works that way".

>>35975174
>So there's no way to attack the armor or the soak independent of each other and if you have both one magically ceases to exist?

Yes. Specifically, the Charm doesn't grant its benefits if you are wearing armor.

>>35975187

See attached image.

As for Ablative Armor: I like the idea in a general game design idea, but I'm not going to use it in Exalted Quest because that's not how the system is meant to be when I designed it, and if I changed that I'd have to change a lot of other stuff as well and almost rewrite everything and, quite frankly, I don't want to.

This is an important point. Individual exalts are often more geopolitically powerful and important than entire small nations. Karas is literally a force stronger than an entire mortal army - even more so than Maka. Tia might give him a run for his money, but only because she's older than him; Full Moons are the physical caste, which includes things like athletics and stealth, rather than being as totally focused on combat like Dawn.

But yeah, we REALLY need to start putting Tiger Warriors to use.

thing work if we can't pop IKB when we need it and not use the armors soak?

That just doesn't make sense seeing as EF says the charm cannot be active as long as we are wearing armor, then immediately supports the point of using armor and then popping IKB
>>
>>35975740

>>
>>35975989
Tell MP I love them next time you see each other.
>>
>>35975953
The charm can ACTIVATE but just doesn't grant benefits. In other words, soak NEVER stacks but you always use the highest value you have. The only bonuses that stack are those where it explicitly says "this will stack", because in this system almost nothing stacks.

If you're wearing an armor that gives you 1 soak, another suit of armor under the first one which also gives you 1 soak, have an active charm that gives you 1 soak, a different charm that ALSO gives you 1 soak, a magical forcefield that gives you 1 soak, and a blessing from the God of Trying To Stack Unstackable Bonuses that gives you 1 soak...

...then you have 1 soak, not 6 soak.
>>
>>35975953
>So then how do we activate the charm if we're wearing armor?
You don't. It's one or the other. Wearing armor doesn't cost an essence point to soak an attack though, making it more efficient to soak using armor rather than Iron Kettle Body.

You use Iron Kettle Body as a emergency way to protect yourself from serious harm if find yourself without armor in a battle, not a complete substitute and replacement for armor
>>
>>35976024
I will eagerly await for Exaltedfag to tell me that, then.
>>
>>35976038
>The charm can ACTIVATE but just doesn't grant benefits.
Right, so you mean that if our armor soak is 1 and IKB is 2, we can use our armor soak fighting extra's and have 1 soak, then when we fight bigger enemies we can pop IKB, which gives us only the 2 soak from IKB, and the armor at that point does nothing because it's the lower value and popping the charm uses the charms (or highest) soak value outright.

So it would go like
>Fighting mooks, using our armor soak
>Have 1 soak total (source: Armor)
>Big meanie shows up, we pop IKB
>Have 2 soak total (source: IKB)

Then 'benefit' we would get would be the utility of saving the essence by not popping IKB for fighting the extra's.

This about right?
>>
>>35976043
>You use Iron Kettle Body as a emergency way to protect yourself from serious harm if find yourself without armor in a battle, not a complete substitute and replacement for armor

IKB is more powerful than any armor except for some high-grade magical armors, though, so it absolutely IS a complete substitute and replacement for armor. It just has the drawback of costing you 1 mote to activate.
And the extra advantage of not being cumbersome or slowing you down in any way, being invisible (leading to people underestimating your sturdiness), and taking effect in a single turn rather than wasting entire minutes donning armor.
>>
>>35976061

>>35976061
>>35976128

>>
>>35976104
True, but with a limited pool of essence, soaking with Iron Kettle Body becomes impractical. So it comes down to a choice: Use Iron Kettle Body for superior protection but at the opportunity cost of having to stay on the defensive all the time because all of your essence has to be spent on defense rather than attack. Or you wear armor, which does not have the same defensive qualities Of Iron Kettle Body but does not require essence to be spent to reduce incoming damage.

>And the extra advantage of not being cumbersome or slowing you down in any way, being invisible (leading to people underestimating your sturdiness), and taking effect in a single turn rather than wasting entire minutes donning armor.
This is also true. But there are also armor donning charms that let you put on armor within seconds rather than minutes, make armor as light as normal clothing and let you store armor Elsewhere until needed making armor more practical for covert stuff.
