RULES AND STATS: http://pastebin.com/bECzgrjY

You are KARLA WEISS, a Belkan fighter pilot looking to carve your own place in the skies!

The next few days proved to be rather uneventful. You got in a few more air patrols, but never really ran into any serious opposition. Of course, it also didn't help you were still tasked to patrol the northernmost sector, which you were a bit reluctant to return to after that "encounter". However, as was said before, your patrols were completely uneventful.

However, today was different. Your flight was now one of many accompanying a massive allied fleet headed towards one of Estovakia's larger islands. Satellites had finally pinpointed the location of the rebel airbase. If the allied forces managed to destroy it, it would effectively crush the rebels' last bastion of resistance. Of course, opposition was expected to be fierce, with a heavily fortified coastline, enemy aircraft of all types, and the possible presence of a small enemy fleet.

"All right, Bravo, listen up." Loki says. "Looks like we've got plenty of aircraft for this mission, so I'll give you a choice of assignments. You can either provide air cover for the invasion fleet, air cover for the landing forces, or attack the airfield the directly. Choose fast, because we'll be attack range of the target soon."

"Hey, Stripes, I guess we could cover the landing forces?"

"Awwwwwww, I hate babysitting!" Lara grumbles.

"Well, they are a rather critical part of this mission." Lilian points out.

"And so many tanks and bunkers asking to be blown up...." You can almost picture Amy salivating at the though.

"Ugh, fine. We'll cover the landing force." Lara sighs.

"All right. Bravo will provide air cover for the landing forces. Alpha, Charlie, and Delta will assault the airfield, and allied planes will protect the fleet." Loki says. "Remember, we have these rebels backed into a corner now. Be prepared for anything."

"Roger that." You all affirm and break off from the main group.

Down below, you can see numerous wakes in the water as dozens of landing craft made their way to shore. Just above them, cruises missiles soared by as they headed to pound defensive positions on the island.

"Hey there, big boys." Lara coos as her Eagle flies by. "Looks like you'll have us as your escorts today."

"Much appreciated, Bravo." The leader of the landing forces, Hotel, says happily. "We'll be hitting shore in about two minutes. Mind sweeping the coast for anything the Navy missed?"

"Magnet, you're up." Lara says.

"Sweet!" Amy pulls ahead in her Warthog, weapons primed and ready to go.

"Anyone want to go in with her?" Lara asks.

"Ah, quit worrying! You know I live for the air to air!" Lara laughs. "Now go pound those assholes!"

At this point, the shorline was getting closer and closer. Already, your radar was tagging targets. Tanks, bunkers, AA guns, and all kinds of equipment were strung along the shoreline. The naval bombardments seemed to have taken out the most threatening assets like the SAM sites and antiship missiles launchers, but they left a lot of targets behind.

"All right, I'm going in for my attack run. Make sure to keep up, Valkyrie." Amy says.

"You're the slowest plane out of all of us. It'll be no problem." You roll your eyes.

Heh, good thing you decided to pack UGBs for this mission. Amy rolls in first, her Warthog spitting bullets and missiles straight down the coastline, ripping tanks and bunkers open like paper. Also, true to her nickname, her Warthog begins drawing all kinds of fire as AA guns and MANPADS attempt to retaliate. You see bullets bouncing and sparking off the Warthog's armored hull, and Amy releases a stream of flares to spoof the MANPADS. With her first run complete, Amy immediately pulls away, leaving the path ahead open for you. You quickly scan the targets tagged on your HUD, trying to determine target priority.

First, there seemed to be a column of tanks coming from inland, no doubt to try and reinforce the defenses. Closer to the shore, you could see numerous APCs and IFVs strung along the treeline, disgorging infantry. And finally, further back in the trees, you could see a cluster of AA guns swiveling to target you. At the speed you were going, you could release your payload and pull away before they could get a lock, but getting rid of them would make future runs much easier.

To your first point, grammar way back when taught that a period serves as adequate punctuation in this case. While it does not, in fact, read as well as what you 'corrected', it is acceptable in terms of English grammar. The capitalization of 'You' is incorrect in the use, but that can be put down to autocorrect being a shit.

To the second point, human error. Happens. There are no editors for forum posts, and Merc does, in fact, try to put things out in a timely fashion.

I honestly don't get your butthurt over the latter at all other than you perhaps perceiving the characters' personalities differently than Merc.

As has been stated by others, take a breath and calm down. You're up in arms over nothing worth being up in arms over.

You nudge your stick a bit, angling your Phantom to the right to execute a bomb run on the AA guns. Better to get them out of the way so you didn't have to worry about them later. You silently count to three and hit the bomb release.

Fortunately, it seems your timing is just about right. Your first bomb sails out from under your wing and hits dead center between a cluster of 5 AA guns. However, your second bomb releases a fraction of a second too late and overshoots a bit, only nabbing 3. As you pull up and away, you glance behind you to see secondary explosions, like fireworks as autocannon ammo cooks off. There's still about 3 guns left, but substantially less than before.

"Bravo, we're beginning landing operations, but we're taking heavy fire!" Hotel yells. "We got infantry and tanks in the treeline ready to tear us apart the moment we land!"

"Bravo, be advised, I'm picking enemy contacts headed for the shore. It looks like some fighters got past Alpha's net. Composition unknown, but there's at least six bandits."

"All right, we'll take care of it, Loki!" Lara says happily, now that she's in her element. "Come on, Angel, let's show 'em who's boss!"

You see Lara and Lilian's radar contacts pull away as the move to intercept the new contacts. You immediately see two contacts wink out and the remaining ones scatter. Poor bastards.

Meanwhile, you and Amy loop around for a fresh attack run. Once again, Amy's Warthog becomes a flying platform of bullets, missiles, and death. This time, she focuses on the tanks, wiping out the entire 6 tank platoon in a single run before pulling away. Down below, you can swear you could see the landing troops waving and cheering as she passes.

Now it was your turn. With the tanks knocked out, all that was left was the infantry and their support vehicles. The infantry at this point were well dug in, but at the very least you could take out the IFVs and APCs providing fire support.

Once again, you're first bomb is directly on target, wiping out six IFVs and scattering the infantry around them. Your second bomb goes off course and lands a little too far behind the enemy lines, only knocking out two APCs.

"Thanks for the support, Bravo!" Hotel says. "My men are landing on the beach. I think we can handle things from here!"

"Hotel, be advised, there may be additional enemy forces inland." Loki warns. "Don't let your guard down."

"Copy."

At this point, Lara and Lilian's fighters return and form up with you and Amy.

"Good hunting?" You ask.

"Just a bunch of Floggers. Me and Lilian nailed three of them and the rest ran off." Lara says.

"Bravo, be advised, it seems like two of Delta's birds are damaged and may need an escort." Loki says. "Fleet Command is also saying they're picking up intermittent radar contacts to the north and want someone to check it out."

"So what do you say, Stripes? Mystery box?" You ask.

"I like the way you think, Valk." Lara chuckles. "Loki, we'll go recon those mystery contacts. Keep an eye out for us."

"Copy that. Good luck, Bravo."

With that, your flight turns northward. Up ahead, there were a number of smaller islands. While none of them held anything of value, they were all just large enough that they could mask something from being spotted both visually and by radar. It also didn't help that there was a huge wall of fog still stubbornly resisting the rays of the sun, reducing visibility.

"Huh, I wonder what could be down there." You muse.

"Hopefully a false alarm." Lilian says.

"Pffffft. That means we'd have wasted our time!" Lara snorts. "I'm hoping it's at least something that can put up a fight!"

"I just hate flying in fog." Amy grumbles.

And then you see them, emerging from the fog like wraiths. Ships. Big ones. You can make out at least one full size cruiser, two destroyers, and three frigates. There were also a number of smaller gunboats swarming around them like flies.

And they were escorted by what had to be a squadron of F-18 Hornets, and a single Mirage 2000. Directly behind them was another squadron of F-111s, their wings loaded with antiship missiles. So far, they haven't seemed to have noticed you just yet. No doubt they wanted to keep their radars off to avoid detection for as long as possible.

"Loki, we got multiple enemy contacts! Ships, planes, everything! They got a full fucking naval task force here!" You yell.

"Loki's right, we need to pull back." You say.

"Awwwww, but-" Lara whines.

"Valkyrie is right." Lilian cuts her off. "Prudence is the best course of action here."

"I got dibs on that cruiser when we come back." Amy says.

Your flight immediately breaks from your current course, executing a quick 180 degree turn before flying back to the relative safety of the allied fleet. Already, you could see both ship formations trading missile fire. However, since both sides were armed with CIWS, neither were making any significant headway. The allied fleet was a similar composition to the enemy squadron, with one cruiser, four destroyers, and one frigate. They were covered by a full squadron of Estovakian MiG-21s and MiG-31s. Your forces had slightly better fighter and ship strength, but lacked any serious antiship firepower.

"Bravo, prepare for a full naval assault!" Loki says. "Multiple ships, fighters, and attack craft incoming! Choose your targets carefully. Remember, we need to defend our own fleet as much as we need to destroy the enemy!"

"How about some Aardvark hunting?" You propose.

"Would've preferred the Hornets, but a plane is a plane!" Lara agrees. "Amy, you don't do too well with planes, so try picking off some of those boats."

"Roger." Amy grunts as her Warthog drops altitude.

Meanwhile, the Fishbeds shoot ahead to engage the Hornets while the Foxhounds unleash their first volley of long range missiles. The Hornets immediately break up their formation, and most of the incoming missiles lose their track, with only 1 Hornet being downed. However, it prevents the Hornets from being able to fire off a preemptive salvo of their own against the Fishbeds and soon enough both squadrons end up knife fighting each other.

With the Hornets occupied, you, Lara, and Lilian shoot forward to intercept the F-111s. It was imperative that you stopped them before they could get into firing range.

Your first missile hits the lead F-111 dead on, causing it to explode brilliantly as the heavy munitions it's carrying are touched off. However, your second missile fails to track and nosedives in the water. Lara and Lilian open up their their own missiles, downing another three Aaardvarks.

With their squadron lead down, the remaining Aaardvarks apparently panic and their formation breaks up, interrupting their attack run.

"Good job, Bravo! You've just bought us sometime!" Loki says.

"Watch out! You have incoming!" One of the Fishbed pilots yells. "One fighter on your six!"

"Another Phantom... or are you the same one?" You hear a random voice on the open net right as your target lock warning screams.

You get more distance because of the launch platform, but that isn't applicable in this situation. You can launch them at different angles than the rest of your AShMs and at different distances by flying low over the water. You should be anyways, you'd get swatted out of the sky if you didn't.

You immediately nose down and hit your afterburners, gaining a sudden and massive boost in speed. You briefly break the lock, but you can tell the Mirage is diving as well to try and keep up with you. Surprisingly enough, he manages to stay just in enough distance to maintain missile lock on you, which is certainly not good for you.

Well, your low altitude limited your options, and if pure speed couldn't get you out of this, you'd have to try something a bit crazier.

Well, if the normal ways of shaking your opponent didn't work, then that just meant you had to resort to doing something totally STUPID AND CRAZY. Now, normally, over the ocean, you really didn't have a lot of ground cover. But in this particular situation, there were a lot of conveniently place ships right there you could use as bullet and missilestops. Plus, with all the bullets and missiles said ships were spitting out themselves, no sane pilot in their right mind would try to follow you in.

So, with that in mind you pull hard on your stick, bringing your Phantom in line with the enemy fleet.

You quickly make a beeline for one of the destroyers, flying perpendicular to it and flying just over its aft portion. The moment you pass it, you barrel roll to the put the ship in between you and your pursuer. Unfortunately, the destroyer was also blocking your view of gunboat right on the other side of it, and your entire plane shudders as your left wing clips the top of the boat, shearing off a good portion of it.

>Your plane has suffered 3 damage! 9hp remaining.

Thankfully, even with about a quarter of your left wing gone, your Phantom was still flying, thought a bit tilted now.

Also, you were still right smack dab in the middle of the enemy fleet. You're painfully aware of the CIWS turrets turning to try and track you, but one of the benefits to being in the middle of the hornets' next was that they couldn't get a clear lock on you without risking hitting each other.

Also, you realize that up ahead, you can see the enemy cruiser, which looked much MUCH larger at this altitude...

There's a distinction when I say "plus or minus to skill" or "plus or minus to roll". The former means you apply the changes to the actual skill rating, which is easy to do if you have a reference. However, since Lancer's stats are hidden, the better option for him is to just add to the roll afterwards.

You line up your shot, despite the fact that you can clearly see 2 CIWS turrets swiveling around to meet you. First you fire off a pair of missiles. They home in on the cruiser and strike at the base of the bridge tower. At this point, the vulcans starting opening and you can feel your plane shudder as bullets tear into it.

>3 damage inflicted! 6hp remaining.

However, you keep level, only nosing up to rake the bridge itself with cannon fire. You can see the windows shatter and the interior spark and flash as bullets tear through and ricochet throughout the interior. Finally, as you begin to pull up to avoid crashing into the cruiser itself, you release a pair of UGBs

You're not sure if it was a lucky hit, or if your bombs just happened to drop into the holes your missiles opened up. Regardless, as your Phantom climbs for altitude, your fighter is briefly engulfed with flame, light, and smoke as pieces ship are tossed everywhere. Once you reach a moderately safe height, you level out and invert to get a good look below you and gasp at what you see.

Whatever you did, it managed to cause enough catastrophic damage to the cruiser that it had literally snapped in two. Secondary explosions ripple across the deck as stored missiles and munitions are set off. You can also see little orange specks as men flee the sinking halves of the ship.

Meanwhile, the rest of the ships abruptly stop firing and the remaining fighters flee the area.

"All units, cease fire! I repeat, cease fire! The enemy fleet has announced its intentions to surrender!" Loki says happily. "Good job, Bravo Four! That was excellent flying there!"

"Holy shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!" Lara bursts out in laughter. "What was the craziest flying I've ever seen."

"That was my kill..." Amy grumbled. "...but that was some good shooting."

"I'm surprised you're still in one piece." Lilian says, a bit concerned. "You're not hurt, are you?"

You quickly pat yourself down to check for any bullet or shrapnel penetration. However, you don't see any blood, nor do you feel any pain other than the aches from high-G maneuvers, so you assume you're fine.

"I'm good. My plane could use a touch up, though."

"Bravo, I know you're tired, but I'm picking up a single unknown contact moving away from the main island. You're closest to it, so can you intercept?" Loki asks.

"Sure thing, Loki." Lara says. "Valk, your bird's chewed up pretty bad. Maybe you should head back to base?"

You quickly check your instruments and panels. Sure, there were a few beeping lights that normally wouldn't be beeping, but otherwise you didn't see any "PLANE WILL FALL OUT THE SKY AT ANY TIME" warnings, so you figured things were fine. The Phantom was a tough bird, after all.

"Nah, I'm still good to fly." You say. "I promise I'll take it easy, though."

"All right, as long as you're aware." Lilian responds.

As the four of you head over to intercept the unknown contact, you start picking up some odd traffic on the open net.

"Damnit, Lancer, where are you going! Form up with my plane and protect me! What do you think I pay you for!?"

"Sorry, Colonel. Judging from all the men I lost, and the fact that you've lost your mines and your headquarters, we've determined you don't have the ability to pay our fees anymore. The numbers just don't add up." You hear a vaguely familiar voice over the channel. "This concludes our contract. Best of luck to you, Colonel."

"Damn you, Lancer! You'll pay for this! I swear, when I find you-"

"I'd be more worried about those four bandits on your tail. Goodbye, Colonel."

The transmission cuts off.

"Ooooh, sounds to me like somebody is totally buttblasted over losing." Lara laughs.

"I can only assume that the rebel leader is on that plane." Lilian says.

Sure enough, as you get closer, you can see a small, private jet, not so different from the kind you used to fly. It was making best speed to the mainland, but there was simply no way it could outrun four military grade fighters.

"Unidentified craft, this is the Bravo One of Artemis Defense, working in conjunction with Estovakian government. You are suspected of carrying rebel personnel. Correct your course to the one we are transmitting, or we will shoot you down."

However, you get no response, and the plane keeps flying straight.

"Amy, can you please 'encourage' them to listen to us?"

"Gladly." Amy giggles maliciously as her Warthog pulls ahead of the plane a bit. She hits a little rudder to put her nose at a diagonal angle across the plane's flightpath and lets loose a burst of vulcan fire.

It was hard not to notice the stream of tracers filling up your windshield.

However, a few seconds after Amy lets loose her burst, the plane suddenly pitches over, diving nosefirst towards the water.

"Amy, what the fuck did you did do?!" You yell.

"I didn't anything!" Amy says in a panic. "I didn't even touch him!"

"No... that's a controlled dive." Lilian says sadly. "It looks like they've made their choice."

"Stupid bastards..." Lara scowls.

The four of you watch helplessly as the plane slams into the water at full speed, the fuselage shattering like glass at the impact. You really doubted anybody could have survived that, but... well... you had to try anyways.

"Loki, this is Bravo. Unidentified plane just went down in the water at our position. Recommend you send search and rescue ASAP."

"Roger that, Bravo."

The four of you circle around the crash site for another half hour until rescue crews arrive on the scene. Once the allied forces had the area under control, you were given the all clear to return to base.

"Shit.... what would make them do something like that?" Amy asks.

"Perhaps they feared arrest more than death." Lilian suggested.

"Or they were just freaking idiots." Lara seethed. "He took the coward's way out. Should've just accepted what was coming to him."

Cipher is the Demon of the Goddamned Round Table. Every Belkan pilot has an innate fear of what he would do if he faced them down.

You know the "OH SHIT" moment you get when you're playing a game, doing pretty well, and you realize that you have lost and there's nothing you can do to change it? That one moment when you understand that every advantage you had was about to be completely flipped against you and used to screw your ass to the wall?

"Ooooooooh." Amy joins in. "Is this a budding romance in the air?"

"Seriously guys, stop it." You sigh.

Thankfully, before they can push the subject any further, you're interrupted by the traffic control tower giving you clearance to land.

"Welcome home, Bravo. Good job out there."

The landing is a bit rough, and you can feel things in your fighting jostling around when they really shouldn't be. You're pretty sure that you'd get a stern talking to by Smokey after he's through with the plane. Of course, he gives you a venomous look when you park the Phantom in the hangar.

"What in the FLYING HELLS did you do to lose that much wing?!" Smokey angrily points to your Phantom's damaged wing.

"I accidentally clipped a ship." You say in your best deadpan tone. "Terribly inconvenient."

"Agh, it's pilots like you that are gonna be the death of me!" Smokey grumbles. "Now go on, get outta here! We've got a lot of work to do thanks to you!"

Smokey shoves you out of the hangar and slams the door behind you, leaving you out in the cold air.

"Hey, Karla, we're going to be heading to the club to get some drinks!" Lara nudges your shoulder. "Wanna come with?"

"Actually, I need to talk to my Uncle about something." You shake your head. "I'll come by later when I'm done."

"Well, don't take too long, then! Gotta toast the girl of the hour, you know!" Lara grins and punches you lightly in the shoulder before shuffling off.

Meanwhile, you head towards the admit building. International calls, especially from military bases, required a specific process to go through. Thankfully, you don't have to fill out too much paperwork, and you're placed in a secure room you can call from. You dial in your uncle's phone number.

"Andrew Weiss, speaking."

"Uncle? It's me, Karla." You say.

"KARLA!" You briefly have to pull your ear away from the receiver. "How are you doing, little niece? How is Artemis treating you?"

"How do you know that? I never told you." You blink.

"Karla, it is my business to know these things!" Uncle laughs.

Right. Uncle used to be an intelligence officer during the Belkan War, until he quit and joined the Belkan Security Bureau when the war ended. But really, he just had the same job, but with a different name. He helped take care of you and Mom after Dad went MIA, and you pretty much considered him a surrogate father. Unlike Mom, he was much more understanding of your life choices.

"Yeah, well, I just realized it's been a while since we talked. Just wanted to see what was going on."

"Oh, same boring old thing." Uncle says. "Hunting down Gray Men remnants, and staring down Osean agents at the border while they stare back at me. Routine things. How about you?"

"Oh, you know, flying planes, blowing stuff up, getting paid for it. Usual PMC stuff."

"Still, I'm a bit surprised you'd sign up with a PMC. I figured you were too patriotic for that."

"I don't really owe Osea any allegiance, and Belka's air force is practically nonexistent." You roll your eyes. "What choice did I have?"

"True, true." Uncle's voice then takes a more conspiratorial tone. "But that is not all that you wanted to talk about, no?"

I'm pretty sure it's too early for that. Last time I checked, the Falken is the only COFFIN-equiped plane in existence during 2016

Since people don't want to ask the Intel spook family member an intel question, I guess we won't ever know.

"Actually, do you know anything about a Flanker with tiger stripes?" You ask.

Uncle is deathly silent, which is a first for you.

"...Uncle?"

"Where did you see this plane?" Uncle asks.

"I kind of just saw it around." You say vaguely. "Why are you so concerned about it?"

"That is the same pattern your father's squadron used." Uncle says.

Huh, now that you think about it, Uncle had always been rather tight lipped when it came to your father. At first you suspected that, like Mom, he was having a hard time dealing with the loss. But now, you began to suspect it was something else.

"Uncle, what aren't you telling me...?"

"I can't say this over the phone. Let me know when you return to Oured. We can meet in person then. Until then, little niece."

And then the phone clicks as he hangs up.

That was... incredibly odd. Encounters with spectral planes, the possible appearance of your father's plane, and Uncle being extremely tight lipped about everything?

Now you really could use a fucking drink.

>And that's all for tonight! As I've said before, I will not be running this weekend due to Veterans' Day plans. I will start running again on Tuesday, November 11, which will be a PJ Witches thread.
