After the first hiccup, Susan does fine in taking the tank for a few circuits around your house. The treads leave huge gouges in the earth, but it wasn't like the land around your place wasn't already covered in them.
"Not bad," you say into the intercom.
"Thanks, but I'm not good either. This is only my first time. That Michael Weiss guy, back at the bar? He's a hell of a veteran. Rumor has it that he was the driver in the Rex Immortalis, but if anyone asks, he denies it. In any case, he's still one hell of a good driver."
Rex Immortalis, huh? You can't remember well, but you think that might be the name of your father's tank. You keep that to yourself, though.
"Having fun?" you ask Susan.
"Yeah, this is great. Driving around a forty ton war machine."
"I'm still waiting to fire the gun," says Sarah, turning to give you a pointed look from her seat in front of you.

Just to prevent more tanksperging, we're driving a Leopard 1A3. Sentinel confirmed that last time at the end.
>>
"We'll get to it in a minute, Sarah," you say. She huffs but turns back to her console. "So, the Rex Immortalis. I've heard the name before, but what is it?"
"You really don't know?" Susan asks.
"Not a clue," you reply.
"Neither," says Sarah.
"Right, well. In practical terms, the Rex Immortalis is meant to be the last surviving M1A2 Abrams in Europa, or at least the title given to what is thought to be the last surviving M1A2 in Europa. Those things are rare, very rare. Such that the last time anyone saw a hint of one was during the last war with Russia, six years ago. I mean, there's always rumours that the Rex Immortalis is still out there, but that was the last time it was confirmed.
"They say that the Rex Immortalis came back to life to fight for all good Europans and stop the Russian hordes from taking over the world. They say that the one tank stopped an entire Russian Army just outside of Bonn, then turned them back and drove them all the way back to Moscow, before disappearing again.

"Stories like this pop up throughout history as legends. The last time the Rex Immortalis appeared, before Bonn, was when Balkania invaded from the south thirty years ago, and before that, when the Mongolian hordes nearly overwhelmed Ukraine.
"It's the same thing every time. A great enemy seeks to conquer the known world, and the Immortal King of all tanks appears and drives them back from whence they came.
"Honestly? I don't know if it's bullshit or not. It could be, but you're never so sure. Stories say that the crew for the last time Rex Immortalis appeared came from here, in Fulda. And Michael Weiss was the driver. You never know."

>>
>>35948325
I'm sure there are a couple 3rd and 4th gen monsters still around, but yeah, like you said its all just speculation, and speculation about things we're not likely to encounter for a long time.

>>
>>35948452

Wasnt 62's an export version of 64?
>>
>>35948477
Nope, completely unrelated to the -64, was intended as a replacement for the -55 but was worse than even -54's because they went cheap on it.
>>
>>35948470
Well unless we come up against those heavies, our L7 should be able to handle anything on that list if we get the drop on them.

>>35948477
Nah, they were unrelated, the T-64 was so good they didn't export it and gave everyone T-72's, the T-64 was essentially a T-72 done right, but expensively, the 72 was much cheaper
>>
>>35948505

What I get from Soviet tank doctrine is a mass of near useless MBT (55,62,72) with elite MBT to exploit cracks in NATO's MBT line (54,64,80)

Post Soviet-they use NATO doctrine (T-90 Series with the latest T90V)
>>
"Susan, let's take the tank down to town."
"You sure? I don't want to smash anything up."
"We'll be fine," you say. "Just take it slow. It'll be good practice."
"Alright," she replies.
She takes the Leo out onto the dirt road leading to town. You and Sarah unbutton in the turret. A farmer in a tractor is driving along, and you turn off the road to give him room. He beeps at you and waves, and you wave back.

It's the same all the way into town, with people waving. One old man yells up to you "You look just like your father did!"
You stop in the middle of town, gathering a crowd. People start throwing questions at you about the tank and you do your best to answer them.
"Where'd you find her?"
"In the tank graveyards."
"What's her name?"
"Fury, like the Goddess."
"What's your merc name?"
"We're the Edelweiss Brigade."
"You taking jobs right now?"
You pause at that one.

Well the later variants of the 55 usurped the 54 and made it obsolete, but they don't export those, the 55 became their go to numerous decent quality MBT, with the 72 being a cheap big gun and the 64 being the best they had, the T-80 was an attempt to modernise the 64 yet keep its price down when they shut most of their factories down, and the T-90 is an expansion to simplify it and export it

You duck back into the hatch to see how Eirch is doing. "You think you can lift that?" you ask him.
"Not while we're moving around like this," he says, wobbling in the turret. You grab his helmet and give it to him, and he puts it on.

The farm house is a ways out of town, and a man is waiting for you outside. You step out of the hatch and hop down to talk to him.
"'eard you comin' a mile away, son. Knew it was someone comin' to do the demo job. This your tank?"
"Yeah, this is ours. Which building are we knocking down?"
He points out a short brick hut sitting out in the plains. "That wun. It's a ruin, been sittin' out there since befo' ah was born. Finally got permission ta expand me paddocks out that way, so ah wanna clear em up."

The sloped armor is for adding more protection layers with as minimal materials as possible instead of deflecting bullets, IIRC

thats why top-attack munitions or Airstrike is devastating to even the Heaviest of MBT, since there are less sloped angle from top, and generally lack of protection on those sides
>>
"What're you paying for it?"
"Ah'll reimburse ya fo' all the rounds you fire. Oy, you're James Bradley's kid, right? Fo' tha', ah'll throw in a thousand as well."
"Seriously?"
"'s tha least I could do for ya. Ya father's a damn legend."

You've got forty rounds of AP, ten rounds HE, and five HEAT.
Take the job?

>Sure
>Nah
>>
>>35950400
>>Sure.

Use AP only, we can afford to use some of it.
>>
>>35950361
Sloped armor allows for more protection for a given plate. Pythagorean theorem.
However, that takes up space. One might argue that the space used might be better served with full blocks of armor, thus making sloped armor unnecessary.

What makes top attack munitions so dangerous is that the top of the tank isn't as heavily armored as the front or sides. That's it.

>>35950488
No, you can't. Different rounds have different ballistics. For example, an AP round is going to have a much flatter trajectory than a HEAT round. They won't zero to the same point
>>
>>35950400
>sure
gotta get that gunnery practice
Does anyone else think that we should do some formal training sometime soon?
>>
>>35950541
I know that, but I meant to sight in the gun, to see if we need to rezero it, we've not yet fired it that we know of, and we've a new gunner on it, so we may as well use the cheaper rounds for practice, and then when she's ready, use a HE round to blow it up.

The Sabca built FCS system has provisions for sighting the gun based on different ammo, it will adjust the ballistic computer as needed when we input that we're switching to HE

>>35950562
I don't think such formal training exists outside the legions, and we're way too small game for that

best bet at getting training would be taking on some bandits and protecting conveys from them

Of course we wouldn't have much in the way of tactical training available. I meant more of making our crew more professional. A ragtag crew may be fun in outside the tank but in an actual fight, we need professionalism to avoid panic and maintain operations.

"Alright, we'll take it." You pause before you go back to your tank. "You know you can just take a sledgehammer to it, right?"
The farmer grins. "Ya know ah jus' wanna'd see a tank blow it up. Bit of a guilty pleasure o' mine."
"Nothing wrong with that," you tell him. "Alright, we'll get it done. You just sit back and watch the show."
You climb back onto the tank and hop down into the turret. "Alright, we're gonna treat this as a drill, get a bit of practice in, learn the ropes. Susan, take us up that hill to the north-east, we can get a good firing position there."
"Roger."
"Erich, load up a round of AP."
"Uhhh..." he says.
"They're the one with the blue bands around them."
"Got it," he says, hefting up an AP round. He lines it up with the breech then shoves it in, pulling his hand back as the breech closes over the round.
"Careful," you say. "Don't get your hand taken off." Erich just nods and looks pale. "Might also want to let Sarah know the gun is loaded," you tell him.
"Loaded," Erich says.

The tank rolls to a stop on the hill. "That's good, Susan. Sarah, want to line up the the gun? You remember how to do that?"
"I got it," Sarah says. The turret starts rotating towards the house, and you guide Sarah onto it using your own sights.
"Alright, you're on target. Fire at will."
Sarah pauses for a moment, making final adjustments. "Just like firing a rifle, 'cept this one is huge. Firing!"
With a boom, the gun fires. You wait for the smoke to clear and catch the round arcing through your target. It sails through the roof, demolishing the beams and causing it to collapse inwards. The house is still standing.

"Erich, load another AP round!"
Erich grunts and loads another round. "Loaded!"
You do this ten more times, taking chunks out of the building bit by bit. The roof has caved in, and though you tried, the chimney is still standing.

Thing's a 1A3, so according to wiki and the research I just did, it's mostly got optical sights and a white light/infrared night sight. Not good but not bad either.

Never been in a tank but it's got a basic FCS too? Dunno how good that is though
>>
>>35951413
It would be later, if ever. Gotta climb dat ladder, yo.
>>
>>35951466
Mediocre is better than none, that's a serious advantage against anything that lacks night vision.

I wonder if it would be better for us to run escort missions at night, since most bandits probably don't have much in the way of night vision.

I wonder if we could get away with running the entire campaign in just our leo, going for upgrades to the tank instead of more tanks. I mean, as the variants rolled along, the tank got hand-me-downs from the leopard 2, up to and including the 120mm on the 1A6,
>>
>>35951558
Sadly, most would prefer to jump tank as soon as we can afford a higher-tier one, so the chances of the quest finishing in the same tank are slim.
>>
>>35951466
the commander had an independent sight for himself, the 1A3A1 upgrade added night sights for standard observation, the 1A3A2 added better radios

an upgrade that several governments opted for for their 1A3's was the fitting of the EMES 12 FCS system, and upgrade over its original FCS, the EMES 12 became standardized on the 1A4, and with the 1A4 upgrade the commander also got his own independent night sight
>>
>>35951558
Nope, the hull and turret were at a dead end up the time the 1A5 and 1A6 modernization programs rolled out, they were obsolete by then

>>35951584
I'm all for upgrading our Leo to a C1 or AS1+ variant eventually, but that's as good as it can get, which brings it firmly into gen 2 MBTs

>>35951642
those vision systems come with the latter variants, culminating in the 1A5 refit which was a modernization of the german armies Leopard 1A2's which they had 2000 of, it included the new spaced armor turret and a vastly improved FCS
>>

>>35951642

>>
>>35951677
nope, they all use their own parts, although with the leopards widespread service and adoption, there were and still are plenty of parts around
>>
>>35951620
Yeah, as much as I want to see the tank converted to an A6, the lack of armor is going to be awful once we start fighting well-equipped enemies.

I still believe in the A6's viability if our main tanks get knocked out, if only for the gun, vision, and mobility.

and the lack of armor is already a problem, the leo was always very thin skinned
>>

Didn't figure so. Looks like A3A1 shooting for A4 will be the most efficient path to take with this tank.
>>
>>35951705
>Is the mobility on the Leopard better than current-gen MBTs?
It's slower
>>
>>35951761
well we could go for the A3A3 upgrade, which added the night sight and the improved radios, but thats going to cost more, which would be better spent towards the A4 upgrade and then the A5 would be as far as feasible before getting another tonk
>>
"Alright, we've had enough fun. Erich, load HE!"
Erich pulls up the round and shoves it in. "Loaded!"
"Fire when ready."
"Adjusting," says Sarah. All told, she's been doing pretty well. There's only been one miss so far, and that was you trying to get a hit on the chimney, which was a longshot even for an experienced tanker.
"Firing," she says. The gun thunders, and it's a perfect shot, the round sailing through an open window and exploding inside the house, blowing all its walls out and sending bricks flying.

You get Susan to drive back to the farmer's house. The farmer's waiting for you as you hop down from the tank.
"Enjoy the show?" You ask.
"Tha' ah did, tha' ah did. Thank ya very much young Robert, fah givin' this ol' man a show like that. Now, how much I be payin' ya fah ya services?"
You do some mental calculations. "It's about a hundred and fifteen all up for the rounds, plus the thousand as payment for coming out here. So that'll be a thousand, one hundred and fifteen marks."
"Righto, son. Ah'll just be gettin' tha money, give me a mo' wouldya?"
You wait patiently for the farmer to go back into the house. He comes back with a handful of cash that he gives to you. You count it all up and it's good.
"Thank you very much, sir. The job was fun."
"No son, ah be thankin' ya. One 'elluva show."

You climb back into your seat and wave at the man as you drive off.

"So, Reese, my father was your commander, then? He commanded on of, if not the most legendary tank in history, the Rex Immortalis?"
"That he did, Robert. He was one hell of a commander and he led us through hell in Russia."
"So... why do you say you 'knew' my father. Is he...?"
Reese takes a drag from a cigarette he lit moments ago, looking at your with baleful eyes. He sighs. "Sorry, Robert. For not telling you this sooner. Your father died in Russia."
You always knew he was dead, but this was the first confirmation you ever got.
Reese continues. "They finally took us down, in the heart of Moscow. They captured us, took us out. Me and Michael, we got imprisonment. James got execution." He takes another drag from his cigarette. "Not that it mattered. Having to be removed from your tank in the middle of Moscow, without protection... All of us got a pretty bad dose of rads. Our loader died long ago, and I'm on my last legs. Out of all of us, it seems like Michael'll be the only one to make it to old age. And he was the youngest too."

"So," you begin. "There must be some reason you're here, right? What do you want with me?"
"I've been waiting for the day to tell you this, and it's finally arrived. Robert, I think you might be worthy to inherit the Rex Immortalis."

nope, though they have started building the factories for it and they've started retooling the factory for making engines, they stopped making engines for M1's a decade ago

best estimates are solid physical development will begin in 2016-2017 with trials starting in 2018 for deployment by 2022

but early guesses are a new turret, based on the old one but largely expanded on with better armor, improvements to the hull armor and the powerpack and perhaps development of a larger gun, though that's a pipedream carried over from the M1 CATTB's 140mm autoloaded beast

On the M1 CATTB it did, the Germans also tried it with the Leo 2, but both found it wasn't worth it, sure it was good, but it brought about other problems like longer barrels and different ammo stowage and all that.

And the existing 120's are more than adequate.
