For once, you don't wake to the slow heat of a sunrise.

Instead, you're greeted with someone calling your name and prodding at your head.

"Lyra? Kid?"
"NNnnggnrggnnn."
You hug the blankets harder, groaning. You can't remember even half of last night.

The poking becomes a frantic slapping, across your shoulder and head-
"Oh gods- no no no-"

You crack an eye open, squinting against the light streaming through a single window above the bed. You can tell your friends are still sleeping behind you- between the feeling on your shell and their soft breathing, neither is going anywhere. You're half laid out on the floor, your human half lying on a bed- You've bundled the sheets, wrapping your arms tight around them, making a pillow for yourself.

"Lyra- Gods, how bloody strong- You're crushing my legs!"
You come awake all at once, letting go of the sheets, pulling your head back and trailing drool as you sit up- You apparently wound up in Lann's room. Which, inevitably, means that you're lying across Lann's bed. With the adventurer in it. And you grabbed her along with the sheets, nearly crushing her.

Whoops.

"Oh thank gods- I thought you were gonna break my legs in your sleep!"
She's pulled herself free of the bedding, rubbing down her legs- two clear indents showing where your arms had lain. You squeeze your eyes shut, trying to clear the fog from your mind.
"Nnn-uh. Sorrry. Sorry. I din mean-"
"It's fine, yeah? Shar shoulda been cutting you off earlier, anyway. I think they just wanted to see what happens when you get a spider drunk, to be honest."
"My head feels... sticky. Fluffy. On the inside."
>>
>>35938517
She looks at you, hands massaging the blood back into her limbs.
"What- No headache?"
"Nothing hurts, no. I just feel, uh, slow. Like stuff is happening, and then I feel it. Weird."
"That's just plain unfair. You don't even- gah. Just- get some water, you'll feel better."

You rummage through your pile of gear, pulling the shield free- It fills at your touch, and you drain it in seconds. And again. And again.

Eventually, you even start to feel human again. Arachne. Whatever.

You stretch, chitin clicking and bones cracking. That was, uh. Huh. Yeah. Maybe go lighter with alcohol.

>Ask Lann what happened. You're pretty sure your remember talking about the ruins.
>Offer her water, she's not looking so hot either.

So are we going to become it or kill it?
>>
>>35938787

I think we might have to beat... I mean train Shezka a bit. We can't have her falling behind the rest of the pack, after all. Also, has anyone bothered to ask her birthday or how old she might be?

Having a weak monster base like werewolf probably means that she is only a little older than us, but you never know what might be the case with poor diet and an unknown background.
>>
>>35938980
>We can't have her falling behind the rest of the pack
She is already closing in on Aria in level. So thats not much of a worry, since we do everything together anyway.

If we get much bigger, those bums will never leave. They'll just park a house on our rear end and we'll become an RV spider.

For those rooting for lava spider, I think we should keep in mind that we might be at risk of being too hot to touch. Hell, we might not even be able to sleep in the tree until we figure out a way not to burn it down with our giant, molten spider butt.

And lord knows Jin would probably set herself on fire within a week. I swear that girl's final evolution should be pheonix, something we can rationalize to her and make more likely by mentioning that the sun (a symbol of fire) is actually the closest star to us.

Lann's moved her hands from her legs to her temple, slowly massaging her head with both hands, her eyes half open. You cough to draw her attention, and offer her the shield.

"Nah, it's- I use a bow, yeah? It'd just get in the way."
"What- No, no. It has a water stone, yes? Would you like a drink?"

She blushes, muttering something resembling thanks as she takes the buckler and starts to sip the cool water.

You take a moment to look around at her room.
If you had to guess, you'd say it's more of a hotel than an actual living space. Though she did say guild members travelled a lot. There's a few bits and pieces strewn on a dresser, and a pack with clothes peeking from the top next to it. A old looking hand mirror, a silver locket, hair pins, bows. The kind to tie back your hair. There's only one of the 'kill stuff' kind.

She hands back the shield without a word, taking deep, raged breaths of air as she leans back.

"Ah, Lann?"
"Thanks, kid."
"You're welcome, yes. What happened last night? I remember the first few stories, and then..."
She chuckles a bit, eyeing you from the bed.

"Well, you kept drinking."
"I think that was assumed, yes."
"Heh. People kept swapping stories, and yours kept getting, uh, louder. When we tried to get the dungeon story out of you, you were just yelling about wizards at that point."
"In my defense, that is pretty much the whole dungeon story."
>>
>>35939557
She laughs, shrugs.
"Fair enough."
"I am more disappointed that I do not remember other peoples stories, yes."
She claps you on the back.
"Swing by later then, maybe."

You throw her a lopsided smile, and shake your head.
"I think I will avoid drinking for a little bit, yes. Until I am older, if not any bigger."
"Hah! Nah, I meant in the afternoon, yeah? We can run a job, or something, and I'll tell you some more. You might even remember them, this time."
"Very funny, yes. I will see about it. I have to at least drop by the forge, and probably speak to Lia again as well."

"I'll see you later, then. Or not. Good luck!"
"You too."

The sun isn't all that high, at least, as you step out into the street. Not noon, yet.

You should probably tell Jin's Mom where you've been all night. Maybe not what you were doing, exactly. But where you were. No need for people to go off worrying.

But now you have a new problem.
You smell like alcohol.

That... should be easy enough to solve. Double it up. Clear your head a bit, to boot!

You step to the side of the road, into the shade of the guild's entrance, and lean forward, framing your head with a waterfall of hair.
And then you take your shield, turn it upside down, and add a regular waterfall to that.

You let the cool water sluice over your head and body, soaking your shirt.
An experimental sniff satisfies you. Much better. You wring shirt and hair alike out, then head for the cabin at an even pace.

Jin's father is already off to work by the time your roll up. A knock on the door reveals both Lia and Jin's sister are home, and you pull the door open and step inside.

"Good morning! Lia, ah- Sefi, yes?"
The smaller harpy nods with a smile.
That's good. It'd be kind of embarrassing to have forgotten the name of your best friend's sister.
"Good morning, little one. I saw you all came home for food in the evening- Where were you all night?"

Your eyes slide over, picking a nice clean spot on the wall to stare at.
"We were at the, ah, Guild, yes? Trading stories. We were rather late, so we shared a room with Lann for the night."
Lia turns her gaze to the sleeping pair strewn across your back.
"So you were sharing stories, and those two were sawing logs all evening, then."

"No, they were just- Ah. Yes. Sheszka woke up for a few minutes, but she went right back to sleep."
"And you spent the night because you had a bit too much to drink, yes."
"Yes- Wait, I mean-"
"You mean?"
"Yes."
>>
>>35940334
You sigh.

Lia laughs.
"The day they share a tale without half a bucket in them... It's just not going to happen, Lyra."
You shrug a bit, blushing.
"I just- Ah, I am a bit young to be drinking, yes?"

Jin's diminutive sister pipes in.
"I tried it! It wasn't very good. I couldn't fly, after!"
Her mother is already shaking her head.
"That is because you are far, far too small to be drinking. It wouldn't even take a cup, Sefi."

She huffs.
"I don't need to be big! I can fly!"
"You need to be bigger if you want to be drinking. Just take water, yes?"
"Ooookay."

Your friend's mother turns back to you, her daughter already rolling her eyes at her back.
"Did you need something, then?"
"No, no. I just wanted to tell you where we have been, yes? I will be seeing Mikhael after, and Lann invited us all to go and work with her for later."
"Hah! Don't take to many jobs from the board, yes? It was bad enough when your mother was here. The adventurers were whining for weeks."

You nod, reversing out the door.
"Of course! I am a giant spider. There is no competition, yes."

Both harpies laugh as you depart.

And you step back into the cabin.

"That didn't take long at all."
"Yes, yes- They are both very flammable, unfortunately. And I am headed to the forge. Can I leave them here?"
Sefi giggles a bit, and Lia sighs.
"It would be for the best. My daughter and fire are just... She had best turn fireproof at some point, or she will be having a very hard life."

You nod. Bundling each of them in a blanket (That they clutch that much closer as you pull them away from yourself), You deposit them side by side in the corner, patting each gently before you straighten.

They smile, even asleep.

"Can you let them know where I am when they wake up? And try and get them to wash, and get ready. I want to try training a bit, yes."
"Lyra, humans say that every woman becomes her mother, yes? But it is not supposed to be a race."

You blush, flapping a hand in her direction as the harpies laugh.
"It is not- I'm not- They want to be stronger, yes? And I... I want to help them. They are always there for me, so I should be there for them."
She smiles.
"I will let them know, little spider. Get a move on."

You wave again, and book it down the street, heading unerringly for the forge. It doesn't take long (because you have eight legs and a stride appropriate for a giant spider) before you're ducking your head beneath a sign and announcing yourself in the dimness of the smithy.
Mikhael sizes you up, hammer in his lap and sitting on the anvil.
>>
>>35941271

"Ya didn't run, huh lass?"
You snort back.
"I want to learn, yes. If you want me gone, teaching me things is not the way to go about it."

"Hah! I've had two apprentices, girl, though It'd be givin' 'em too much credit to even call 'em that."
"They ran, then?"
"The second didn't even last a week! Limp armed idiots thinkin' you just heat up metal and make money."

You meet his eyes, even in the twilight of the forge.
"I want to make things, yes. With my hands, so I can wield them. Coins are not something that concern me."

He flips the hammer in his grasp, catching the head and holding the leather wrapped handle out to you.
"Show me, lass."

Don’t need myself a chalice
Don’t need no diamond ring

So painful to the eyes
But I cannot look away now
For within there lies my prize

A plow for Ol McGrory
A shovel for Young Pate
A sword for Little Mickey
And for Lyra, brand new plate
[Damn spiders]

They say I’m getting older
That these bones, they need their rest
But when I get to aching
I find that fire’s what soothes best

So ring out, steel and iron!

I want to get to the point where Lyra can craft legendary items. Probably going to need to learn some enchanting from dad first though
>>
>>35942052
like being able to create a self repairing spider golem
>>
So.

It just hit me that Lyra just skips over the, for the most part, majority of the difficulty of learning how to smith by being able to manipulate pure metal.

Shaping, testing, strengthening? Easy compared to making sure the metal isn't so flawed it becomes compromised.
>>
>>35942052
I don't want to go to any real legendary heights, myself.
>>
It's...

Well, no, it's not different from yesterday.
But you've got a goal, today. And Mikhael is even in a mood to listen, if not go easy on you. He guides you through making training weapons- The kind of steel with a bit more spring to it, how to blunt an edge. Gauntlets like Sheszka uses are more than a little out of your ability to make, but the smith helps you shape a few simple plates- riveting them to leather gloves.

She'll be able to block and swing with these, and they should even keep her claws clear of anyone she works with.

For yourself, a simple pole with a cross at the top. You can wrap it later. That one, at least, is mostly effortless.

Of course, finishing what you wanted to make doesn't mean you're done. Not by a long shot.

You're put to work firing the bellows, keeping the heat even. You smelt metal, fold metal, flatten metal.

Metal metal metal metal.

By the time you're done with one bar, or stick, or whatever bit he happens to hand you, he's got another one ready. You learn about hardening steel, about working different metals into the core of something to give it enough spring to avoid snapping.

Of course, knowing something and being able to do it are two very different things.
>>
>>35942121
We probably never will anyway, not counting the fact that we won't focus on smithing alone, we also don't have the Job bonuses for it either
>>
>>35942178
Mikhael holds another bar up before his eyes, rapping it against the anvil.
"Clean. You still need more work, but you're turnin' out okay so far, eight-legs. We'll see how your work holds up- I've got orders to fill."

You nod, and head for the door. The cool air is a welcome relief after the sweltering atmosphere of the smithy. You plant yourself next to fence, and set about padding your new training gear.

By the time your friends appear, you're satisfied with the weapons- Sheszka's wwas pretty much good from the start, but you've coated your false spear in more than a few layers of webbing.

You probably can't swing full tilt, but it's enough that people shouldn't get hurt.

Or it only we had water bending so we could bring the river to us. As is, if guild wins, we might be able to turn the ground into sand. It adds movement difficulty and we could (hopefully) put it back how we found it. On the whole, though, we might want to lay off on lava bending around the guild yard.

BTW how many more smithing sessions do you guys think we should do? May be a little while But 2-3 more or just finishing off the week. Would leave us alot more competent. Someone please post the lyrics to "Be A Spider". Shez and Jin must be as swift as a weaving Elle. With all the strength of a fierce Aria.
>>
Jin floats gently down, landing neatly on your skull and folding her wings while Sheszka trots up, an honest smile breaking across her face as she gets closer.

"Hello there, yes. Did you have a good rest?"
The two share a glance, and Sheszka cocks her head to one side.
"Nmmn. You were gone. When we woke up, yes."
Jin nods, and you wolf closes on, throwing her arms around you in a tight hug.
"Don't like that."

You pat her head with care, smoothing her hair, letting your fingers brush against her ears.
"I'm not going anywhere, yes? It's okay, it's okay."
You coo soothingly at the little wolf as she hugs you tighter- You smile, just a little sad. She's getting strong enough that you can feel it.
"You can't leave. Not allowed."

Reaching down, you pull the little wolf off your waist and into your arms, hugging her face to face, letting her nuzzle into your shoulder. She sniffles a little, and Jin hops forwards behind you, wrapping her wings around the two of you, coating you both in a downy blanket.

"Lyra is strong, yes. You are safe."
You hold her tight till you feel the tension leak out of her arms, and she's holding you loosely, breathing deeply against you. You shift your shoulders, and Jin pulls back her wings, letting you drop the little wolf back to the ground. She looks up at you with clear eyes, and you offer a hand.

"Let's go, yes? We can train, together. We'll get stronger, all of us."
Sheszka lets out on big sniffle, her nose wrinkling as she takes in air, and she grabs your hand, squeezing tight, locking her fingers around yours.
You lead her through the town at your side.
>>
>>35944189

The guild will probably have somewhere to train- You'd imagine they don't want people flinging magic willy-nilly all over, so it'd make sense for there to be somewhere safe to practice.

Jin has settled on the smaller spider half of your body, pressing right up against you as you walk. You can feel her head resting between your shoulderblades, the feathers peeking out of her hair tickling at the back of your neck. Sheszka rubs at her nose one-handed as she trots beside you.

You walk freely into the guild, flagging down a waitress while your harpy friend nods to herself behind you, apparently satisfied with... something or another.

"Is there somewhere to train? Or is it just for the guild, or?"
You let the question hang, waiting for an answer. The woman points you straight at a pair of double doors, sitting beside the stairs against the wall of the tavern floor.
"Anybody wanting to use can go right ahead; Ya just gotta share it is all."
"Thank you."

The stairs beyond the door are steep, but well lit, magelights casting everything in a white glow. At the bottom, the room widens- A fairly clean hewn cavern, lights strung all throughout. There's a trio of circles, filled with sand- Arenas for sparring. One's already full, with two more watching the fight. There's a small pile of targets across the far wall beyond that- two classic looking arrow targets, and a set of scorched looking stones, undoubtedly for mages.

You pull your wolf to the nearest free circle- passing her the padded gloves, and pulling free your new training spear.
"Jin? Do you want to watch, or practice yourself?"
She hops to your shell, and then down to the ground with a flutter of her wings.
"I will practise! I will get stronger, too!"
>>
>>35944213
You nod.
"Maybe you can try to do more with your magic, yes?"
"More?"
"You saw Sara, yes? Maybe you can make the stars even bigger, or control them!"
She nods back excitedly, moving to the targets with hops and glides, and you turn back to your sparring partner. SHe has her new gloves on, clenching her hands one at a time, feeling the leather flex and creak around her grasp.

"I want you to try and hit me, yes?"
"Alpha!"
"Don't worry. The gloves are soft, so it won't hurt, yes. I want you to strike and dodge and block, yes. This is training."
She looks a little nervous, but she nods, raising her hands and clenching her fists.
"Good. Go!"

___________________________________________

You kinda feel bad for the things you sicced her on, now. Seeing her move fast, and having her move fast head on are two very different things.

Her speed now is incomparable to the velocity of the half starved waif you dropped cold across the river. Sheszka is all over you, swinging for gaps in your defense, trying to circle you, staying low and sweeping through your legs to keep your eyes confused.

But you've been training with Mom for a lot longer than she has. You counter her attacks, one at a time- Dropping lower to keep her from getting beneath you, skipping backwards, shoving her off balance with your legs. It's hard to reign in your strength, but you take things slow to start. The crossguard makes itself known and exceptionally valuable, cutting off her forward strikes, corralling her in till you can sweep her legs out from beneath her.

She lies panting in the sand, and accepts your hand as you pull her back to her feet- yanking her forward right into you, rubbing vigourously at her ears.
"Well done, yes! Going low was very good. I had to change the way I fight to catch you!"
Her smile is wide and pleased as you heap her with praise.
>>
>>35944232
The crowd parts as you head to see Jin- You hadn't even noticed as the adventurers ringed your arena. More than a few appear to be exchanging money. You catch a few whispers about how long Sheszka managed to last, and more than a few curses from people who had bet against her. It gives you a smile all your own.

Jin is squatting, wings held wide and eyes scrunched closed. Around her, a few larger orbs circle, zipping back and forth as the harpy tilts her head one way or another. You sit and watch as they each take a trajectory all their own, homing in on her target and release little explosions of heat and light as they smash into it. Jin nods to herself- Then jumps and spins as you applaud her, cheeks bright.

She rushes up to you, hopping and flapping to get to eye level as she yells.
"I did it, yes! I made them different! Stronger! I am stronger!"
She keeps it up till you snatch her out of the air, muffling her shouting with a hug. The crowd behind you chuckles, laughing and dispersing back to their own training.

"Good Job, Jin. It looked amazing, yes."
She nods fiercely into your chest, and you smile as you let her go, watching the harpy's bright smile and answering it with your own.

Point of order: We should totally wait until Jin evolves to see what the evolution process looks like. Maybe it's pokemon. Maybe Santa will come and give her presents. Who knows when everyone keeps inexplicably sleeping through the change process.

It's also possible, though incredibly unlikely, that she won't choose to evolve this time. With as little as she seems to have been doing, it doesn't seem likely that she will have achieved any special add-ons. For us that would result in a deferment of evolution until we actually had unlocked something more substantial. On that note, I'm really surprised mom didn't have a lot more special achievements waiting in the tank when she evolved.

Also, yes, we are totally telling her about the glorious Sun, that she might proudly bathe in it's gross incandescence.

> It's also possible, though incredibly unlikely, that she won't choose to evolve this time
I'm going to assume that most people aren't going to refuse an opportunity to evolve, not unless they're specifically looking out for special evolutions and such. And it is pretty weird that Mom didn't get any special achievements, though to be fair she doesn't have magic.
>>
>>35945425
>The Sun, she will praise it, yes.

That aside, how what reason would Lyra have for spending all night watching Jin sleep. That's not just meta, it's kinda creepy.
>>

>That aside, how what reason would Lyra have for spending all night watching Jin sleep.
I think she will evolve soon and I want to see it happen?
>>
>>35945480
>pretty weird that Mom didn't get any special achievements
She did though, just according to the pastebin she hasn't had a chance to investigate them and figure out what they are.
>>
>>35945480

It's also possible that mom just doesn't have any variants on her sheet right now since she is still exploring her new potential. It's on her to-do list, but we are just one thing she has to deal with on a regular basis.

Also, we could totally mention the whole "Sun is a star" thing on the way home. It's probably around sunset now, making for a rather poetic time to share that fact with her, when the sun seems so close to the earth you could just about touch it.

I wish I could draw so that I could actually do the patterning that I can see for that sort of transformation, something to the effect of a big sun crest of brown feathers forming on her chest with a white sun on her back, the stars taking on a white pattern over brown.

If she ever goes phoenix, the sun could just evolve as though it had come alight, burning in her chest.

Also, her theme song would thereafter have to be this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0V784AiYtG8
>>
>>35945656
>Sun is a star at sunset
It's like you read my mind anon
