Her name is Clara Hunter; she's the daughter of Maxine Hunter, the current CEO of Chalcedon Incorporated. The current time is 6:11 PM, the current date is October 12, 2034. You kidnapped her yesterday when school let out, and she's unharmed at present.

She fell in love with you at first sight, which made the task of keeping her under control much easier. When her mother's mercenaries got close and shot up some police officers, however, she felt responsible, and begged you to make it stop. After some consideration, you switched safehouses and let her call her mother.

After begging her mother to stop spending men after you, she confessed her love for you to her mother.

Her mother was, understandably, nonplussed.

"Okay, okay, pumpkin, is he making you say that? If he's making you say that, just- just tell me what the name of your first pet was. The big dog, who died when you were thirteen?"

"Tertius," Clara says.

There's a pause on the other end of the line. "Okay, pumpkin, this is- this is called Stockholm syndrome, or capture-bonding, and, it's okay, we'll get you the best psychiatrists money can buy, and-"

"I loved him the moment I laid eyes on him, Mom. It's not- it's not Stockholm syndrome."

Because all the other stories involved lying, which we have no idea if Clara can do very well.

She "faked" being emotionally distressed very well, and the only false part of that somebody was right at her door.

The other element would involve weaving a believable story to Maxine and probably keeping it consistent, as opposed to the zero lying option.

It's a fair point, but obviously it wasn't just one guy saying

"This story is boring, but I don't really care! Let's keep playing it safe! Maybe Mandy from IT has got some emails for us to read! Or we could talk to Clara while being careful not to talk about anything of value or interact meaningfully with her in any way!"
>>
>>35875375
Many of the lies would only serve to aggravate the mother more, or would seem too much like we were forcing her to say them. There's also the fact that now Clara's literally told the truth: if she fails to get her mother off our backs, then she'll hopefully realize that it's her mother that's the problem.

And that can only work to our advantage.
>>
>>35875413
In all fairness, there have been plenty of interesting choices that weren't really risky, that also didn't get chosen.
>>
>>35875426
Our primary goal is to get the money. Having her tell the truth makes it a lot less likely to achieve that goal.
We should have just started sending the mom pictures that makes it look like her daughter was being raped or something to guilt trip her into paying up.
>>
>>35875486
The "primary goal" has never been the money, dipshit. The goal was survival: escaping the corporation that literally tried to have us killed before we ever picked up a captve.

The money is just a potential means to that end.
>>
>>35875486

Maxine doesn't seem the type for guilt, though. She's the aggressive response type, from what we've seen so far, so such things are just more likely to make her angry and vindictive. She's playing hardball already, if we keep pissing her off she'll get pretty serious about obliterating us. She's not afraid to have guys shoot it out with cops, as far as we know.
>>
>>35875513
The "primary goal" of the kidnapping is the money.
>>
>>35875546
>The "primary goal" of the kidnapping is the money.
Yes, but the reason we WANTED the money, as described in-character, is to start a new life outside the reach of the corporate CEO who tried to murder us.

In pulling shit like faked rape videos or pictures, you're just pissing off said CEO, making it both harder to get the money and pretty much impossible to get her to back the fuck off.
>>
>>35875513
Exactly.
>>
>>35875539
If Maxine backs off at the prospect of Clara being hurt we know we've got her by the balls, if not the waifufags can rejoice because they can now justify escaping with Clara from her evil mother.
>>
>>35875546
The motive behind the money is to escape her fucking henchmen. We "rape" her, we get hunted down to the ends of the earth.
>>
>>35875195
>Let this family drama play out.
>>
You pick up the phone, interrupting Clara and Maxine's little family heart-to-heart. Turning it off speakerphone, you bring it up to your ear.

"It sounds a little familiar to me, Maxine," you say, and you can practically hear the woman hiss at your uninvited interruption. "Ezekiel Watts. Or should I call him Zeke? He got in trouble for something a bit similar, as I recall..."

There's a pause, hesitant. "You're grasping at straws."

"Am I? Or perhaps the connection's real. Clara told me what her first sexual thought was, did you know that?" Clara blushes where she stands. "She got picked up by her caretaker and it gave her this funny little tingle. Wonder if whatever you were doing to her to make her grow made that tingle much, much more important than it otherwise would've been?" Clara looks a little... confused by that, blinking as she tries to process your words. "Just a wild guess, but Zeke wouldn't happen to have had something similar happen to him?"

"I'm not saying anything about that."

"Then maybe I should just note that perhaps it wasn't such a good idea to raise your kid in an experimental facility with untested technology."

"You don't know anything, you little shit. When I get my hands on you-"

>Threaten to elope with Clara if she doesn't pay up now. It's a realistic threat, and you doubt that Maxine would be pleased if it happened.
>Have Clara try to reason with her. Maxine doesn't need to give you the money right away, she just needs to call off her mercs before anyone else gets hurt. Maybe Clara can manage that, at least.
>Suggest that you marry Clara. She's so lovesick, and it would elegantly solve all of everyone's problems; Clara will be happy, you won't have to worry about your mother-in-law trying to have you killed, and Maxine doesn't have to worry about Clara running off after you or doing anything stupid.

She's already going to attempt to hunt us down to the end of the earth. Now we have no ability to get the money because no majority will vote to actually hurt Clara and we now can't do some scheme that involves Clara running off with the MC after we get the money because her mother knows she believes she's in love.

Already voted, but I'm just going to put this out here: think very hard about using marriage as a threat, and how people would respond to it.

Maxine will take it as a sure sign that we're just using Clara to cover our ass: and even if we are, that's not a thing we want.

Clara might take it the same way, and think we don't really give a shit about her. Which even if we don't, that's not how we want her to feel about it.

She can escalate more. She hasn't escalated because we haven't done enough shit to do that. We send a finger, she will use all of the corporation's resources to crush us.

Are you seriously suggesting we play Moby Dick to her Ahab?

Eloping is way more sensible than marriage. Do you really want to just hand yourself over to Maxine?
>>
>>35875767
We're already the white whale, we know to much to be allowed to leave. We already know too many of her secrets for her to consider not chasing. All this does is create a situation in which our effective power is limited. And she can only escalate so much before she risks her daughter.

To play the devil's advocate, Moby Dick won in the end.

I know I'm too late, but we really should've tried guilt tripping her just then.
>>
"I think I have a solution that should work for all involved parties," you interrupt, putting the phone down and setting it to speaker. Clara nervously plays with her hands as her eyes flick between it and you. "It's simple: I marry Clara." Clara blinks, her eyes going wide, a hopeful look appearing on her face before it's replaced with confusion. "Clara's happy: she's really, obviously, incredibly in love with me. I'm happy, because you obviously wouldn't murder your son-in-law. And you're happy, because you don't have to worry about Clara running off after me, or doing anything stupid like that."

There's a long, long silence. For a moment you worry the line's gone dead, but a glance at the phone shows the call's still going.

"M-Mom," Clara starts, "I, I would be really ha-happy if you said yes. I really, really love him, and-"

"You barely even know him, Clara," Maxine interrupts, annoyed. "He doesn't love you back. Did you notice that? He never said that he even *liked* you."

"It's - it's okay. I understand that he didn't feel what I did, when we first met. It just means I have to work for it." She looks up at you, giving you a sickly sweet look. "I'm sure if I try my hardest to make him happy, he'll learn to love me back."

"This is ridiculous," Maxine says, huffing. "You can't be serious."

"Oh, I'm quite serious, Mrs. Hunter... or should I say, Mom?"

"No. No you should not."

"Call off your goons, for now-"

"Oh, you'd like that, wouldn't you?" Mrs. Hunter interrupts.

"Actually, it's more for Clara's sake," you reply. "Your boys had a run-in with the cops at our last safehouse," you explain. "She puked up her guts and cried like a baby. A bawling, vomiting baby. It wasn't pretty. Call of your goons, and think about the offer. For her sake."

"Please," Clara adds, "Mom, I- I- I don't want anybody to die over me," she sniffles, tears apparently renewing in her eyes.

"Pumpkin, that's what these people are paid for. They know there's the risk when they sign up. You're just a civilian, it's their job to protect you."

"I don't care!" Clara yells into the phone. "I don't want anybody to die! I just- I just want you to stop getting people killed! Is that too much too ask?"

"Clara, pumpkin," Mrs. Hunter says, voice soothing. "You don't understand what you're saying. This man is taking advantage of you. You're in a vulnerable condition. Please, pumpkin. I'm your mother, and I love you, and he doesn't. You know that."

"If- if you really love me," Clara says, wiping at her eyes, "then call off the mercs. Just for today. Okay, Mom?"

There's a long pause, then a sigh. "Fine. Fine. For now, pumpkin, because you asked."

"What do you have against me?"

"You kidnapped my daughter," Mrs. Hunter says, voice full of sarcasm.

"Before that. You tried to have me killed. Why?"

"I have a lot of people killed," Mrs. Hunter replies, and you can just imagine her checking her nails as she says it. "You'll need to be more specific."

"I'm the security consultant you tried to 'terminate' a couple weeks back," you say. "Ring any bells, yet?"

She pauses, as if trying to place you. "Oh. Oh. So that's who you are. It's all starting to come together, now."

"Why? Why try to have me killed?"

"Does the Stephen Black mean anything to you? I'll just tell you, since it probably doesn't. You killed him."

"If I killed him," you say, though you honestly don't remember the name, "I did it for the company."

"Oh, yes, I'm sure," Mrs. Hunter replies. "And the fact that there was a document sitting on Mr. Black's computer, alleging your involvement in any number of other criminal activities was just a coincidence? We're very lucky that one of his relatives found it and forwarded it our way. Otherwise you'd still be gumming up our works. Embezzlement, fraud, drug distribution, murder one, torture... the list goes on and on. That's the man you fell in love with, Clara. A ruthless, heartless, killer."

"H-he's been nothing but kind to me," Clara says, though there's a new tremor in her voice.

"Sure he has. He's got you wrapped around his little finger, doesn't he? Why bother with being rough when you're in love with him? If you'd resisted more, maybe he'd have brought out the electrodes."

They didn't spend millions training the MC. They recruited him after he'd been working for the military for several years.
He was already fully trained for wetworks.

"I didn't do half the things you're accusing me of," you say, and somehow that doesn't quite reassure Clara as much as you'd hoped. You snap up the phone. "I'm a professional. I do work for hire. I don't dip into the company pot and I don't fucking sell drugs."

"There was a lot of built up evidence," Maxine replies, voice cold. "Photos. Dates. Times. Places. It all adds up. And the fact that Mr. Black died with this on his phone? You can work with circumstantial evidence too, I'm sure, unless you've decided that my Clara's birthday is, in fact, in 2016? No?"

"You don't find it the least bit suspicious that this relative just happened upon the evidence?"

"The relative is a fucking housewife who couldn't even unlock her brother's phone and brought it to the company in the hopes that we could. If I have to choose between believing that a woman who hasn't been employed since the Green Administration and didn't graduate high school is some kind of brilliant hacker fabricating excellent evidence, and believing that a highly paid murderer would murder someone to keep his job? Guess which one I'm going to pick."

"I can't even effectively deny what you're accusing me of because you're not giving specifics."

"Fine. You want specifics? June 9, 2032, you kill six drug fiends. A company job, fine, in our records. The thing is, those same drug fiends were producing a designer drug with a very particular composition. And that drug reappears six months later, someone liquidating a big supply all at once."

"Maybe somebody had some leftovers."

>(1/2)
>>
>>35877624
But he wasn't. He helped the company by getting rid of someone who had files on his dirty work, presumably done while in the employment of the company.
>>
"Maybe. August 10, this year, you request a resupply of cash. The same is true on August 17, August 24, August 31... well, once a week, really. That's embezzlement. That wasn't in Mr. Black's records; you killed him before then, but when I did some spring cleaning on you I found it."

"I didn't request that money."

"I'm sure you didn't. There's lots more. People killed with weapons fitting your standard load out - highly resistant to ballistic fingerprinting, as one would expect from our private weapons - during times when you were 'off the reservation,' so to speak. Parts of the evidence are circumstantial, sure, but there's just so much here... and there's no record of you ever being given a job to kill Mr. Black - I checked with your handler personally - but the job has your fingerprints all over it, figuratively speaking. Should I go on? I think it might help Clara get a reality check."

As tempting as it is, we should hold off on mentioning Raimes until we have a better feel for what's going on. Yes, its likely that Raimes is setting us up, but if he isn't, revealing he's working with us could compromise us both.

However, we *really* need to get some better insight on this, because this is a pretty obvious setup.

I'm beginning to suspect our partner engineered this whole thing. Maybe we botched a job that crippled him. Maybe he knew who would have us try to kill him. Maybe he decided to kill two birds with one stone.

"Oh, so that's how it is. Use it as an opening to accuse me of lying." There's a pause as she mentally reorients. "Clara, pumpkin, I love you, I want what's best for you, but I would not lie to you about this, I swear."

"You wouldn't lie to her about this, but you would lie to her about her real upbringing? You wouldn't lie to her about this, but you would lie to her about her age, about her status as a human experiment-"

"Clara, pumpkin, I want you to know you can always count on me to tell you the truth when it counts. You just move towards Clara, wrapping her in a wordless hug, pressing her face into your chest. She squeaks a little in surprise for a moment, then her hands slowly come up your back, digging into you, hard. It doesn't take long like that for you to hear her cry again, little sobs reaching your ears. You pat her on the head gently before finally pulling her off of you.

"Clara, why don't you make the two of us dinner? I have a call to make, and it should help you take your mind off this."

"You're- you're not denying it," she says as she looks up at you.

"I didn't do the things she said," you say with a sigh. "I'm going to look into why she thought I did. Okay?"

She nods, then moves into the small kitchen, going through the (admittedly limited) supplies in the pantry and fridge, silently going about the task before her, her face blank save the slight glistening from her earlier crying.

You take the phone and call Raimes. They pick up on the second ring. "What is it?"

"Maxine is denying having assassinated anyone at the company besides me. Can you shed some light on why she would do that?"

"I can give you a list of the deceased, if that's what you're asking. Please hold while I get them up."

There's a few seconds of pause before a list of fourteen names appear in a text on your phone, along with job names, date of death, and apparent cause of death. "Liam Cobalt, business executive, September 17, car accident (hit and run). James Sunderland, secretary, September 20, heart failure during sleep." The list goes on in that vein. They're all grouped around your firing, about two weeks either direction.

"Does that suffice?"

>Thank him. You appreciate Raimes helping to put your mind at ease. Hang up and go see how Clara's doing, show her the evidence.

"Where did you get this information from, and why should I trust it?"

"I obtained it personally. It's good."

"Do you have the hit orders themselves?"

"I can send them to you, given a minute or two. Why do you ask?"

"I'm not sure I can trust you. Maxine's being stubborn and claiming that she didn't try to off anyone at the company besides myself. I'd just like a little reassurance."

"Of course," the staticky voice comes over the line. "Please hold." It takes about a minute, and then a series of pdfs are sent to your phone. You glance through them, and they look pretty much like some of the order/confirmations you received, with minor differences here and there. Nothing suspicious. Raimes speaks after a minute or two. "Are these to your satisfaction?"

"They look right," you say. "But you've still yet to put up that show of trust you owe me."

"Wasn't my assistance back in Victoria enough to show that I'm on your side? If I hadn't informed you, you could be dead."

"You want to kidnap Clara," you say, "it's in your best interests if you're just using me before throwing me away. You still aren't done with me."

"I understand. This is a difficult bridge to cross, you have to understand. I cannot simply reveal my identity to you. If you divulge it for any reason, I will die. I am sorry."

"Fine," you say, sighing again. "Fine! Whatever." You pause, taking a moment to compose yourself. "Just... keep an eye out for anything helpful."

"Roger that. I wish you the best." The line goes dead, and you put down the phone.

Clara's cooking what looks to be grilled cheese, and she turns to give you this amazingly cute, embarrassed little smile. "There's not a lot to cook with, so I didn't really get to flex my culinary muscles," she explains. "I do have one little trick for making a good grilled cheese that comes in handy, though!"

"Oh? What?"

She takes on a conspiratorial whisper as she leans towards you. "You put a little bit of butter on the top. Just a smidge. Really brings out the taste."

"I can't wait to try it," you reply, smiling down at her, and she just nods in response. "You got a second?"

"Mmhmm. What do you want?"

"I've got some documents I'd like you to take a look at," you say, holding your phone out to her and thumbing through them. She looks at them, her brow furrowing with each successive document.

"Is- is that what a hit order looks like?" She asks, looking up at you without moving her head.

"Yeah. Yeah it is."

"To be honest with you, Clara," you start, "these could be faked pretty easily. They're just documents, you know? Copy and paste from one to another, edit a few lines here and there, and you're done. Easy way to fake hit orders. Not like I can exactly check the central database to confirm, either."

"So it's not good evidence?" She glances back at the still-cooking grilled cheese, then grabs a spatula and flips them.

"It is, just not for anything in particular. It means either your mother is fucking with me, or my contact is. That's good - it means I'm very close to the end, here."

"And when this is all done, you'll marry me, right?"

"I'll think about it," you reply with a smirk. She just turns her attention back to the grilled cheese, zoning out with the cooking again.

"Hey, you okay?" You ask.

She turns back to you, a smile briefly flickering across her face before it disappears. "I'm fine. What's there to complain about? My brain's gone and decided that you're the perfect man, and it's never going to change that decision. So I'm going to be stuck loving you for the rest of my life no matter what either of us do, and that means-" she cuts herself off and sighs. "Can I just cook in peace?"

"You don't know that what you're feeling is for life," you say.

"I do," she whispers, voice tiny, obviously not intending for you to hear. Then she turns to look at you. "Please? Space?"

"Alright," you say, softly, before backing out of the kitchen. You pick up your phone, calling Maxine. "Maxine," you say, voice cold, "I'd like to talk to you further. Liam Cobalt, James Sunderland..." you go down the list. "These names ring any bells for you?"

"No," is her cold reply. "Is this another attempt to convince Clara that you're not a murderous, embezzling, drug dealer?"

"I've got documents of hit orders you put out on them. Care to see them?"

"Yes, please send me these documents, and then I will tell you that you faked them up. Actually, let's just save ourselves both a step and not bother sending evidence of murder over the phone. There, aren't we both glad?"

"Fine. Would you at least check your database for one of the unique identifiers on one of the hit orders?"

"No, because there is no such database of hit orders. Such a thing would be wildly incriminating and there is no way that I would ever mention its existence over the phone even if it did exist."

"72A-B."

"All internal identification numbers we use on documentation here at Chalcedon follow certain patterns to avoid transcription errors due to saying the numbers in the wrong order or confusing one number for another. That one does not follow that pattern, suggesting you got it wrong, which is unsurprising given it's documentation of assassination which we don't do here at Chalcedon. Did you get it wrong?"

"Strange, the way I remember it, we just talking about you trying to add blackmail to kidnapping, then a little later you start asking about some kind of massive assassination documentorium or somesuch nonsense. Weird."

She's obfuscating. You change the subject. "Has anyone besides me gotten in contact with you about your daughter's kidnapping."

"Yes. Your partner, the one with the robo-voice. Why? Trouble in paradise?"

"None of your business. When did you say I killed Black?"

"Christ, you don't even remember when you murder people? It was July 22, this year. The job had your fingerprints all over it."

You unceremoniously hang up the phone and sit down with your computer, going through to try to find the day of Black's murder. "July 22 - work day. Order filed, 1098, order completed without difficulty." Using a simple cipher, those numbers translate to S.B. Stephen Black. So it was work, after all. Which means...

Alright, lets see.

Where does Ramires get his information from? He isn't some super-ultra hacker, he's likely inside the company.

Now, where did all of this information about Embezzlement and documents come from their side? Obviously someone within the company, and I do doubt she did that spring cleaning herself.

Another thing to note, Ramires was also one of the 16 people who were singled out by this, exactly as we are now, and yet she's only referred to him as an accomplice in THIS, rather than as a hit that had failed.

Something's fishy here.

>Ramires was also one of the 16 people who were singled out by this, exactly as we are now,

Nothing. It means nothing.

It doesn't help you narrow things down at all.

The most suspicious individual would be... your handler. Didn't Maxine say that he claimed he didn't send you on that job? That's one lead, you mentally note.

You weren't looking for anything in the late Mr. Black's place. You know that much. But you can hardly prove that to Maxine. "It says in my diary that I'm innocent, so you have to believe me" probably isn't going to fly. You run your hands through your hair, then tap at your skull. There has to be a solution to this problem that you're just not seeing.

Maxine or Raimes. Your captive's mother or your unseen accomplice? There has to be some kind of physical evidence you can get your hands on to confirm, one way or the other.

We need to set up our own place, where certain eyes wouldn't be able to direct others onto us.

Your ex-handler. He knows enough to know the truth. A simple question: did he tell Maxine that you were ordered to kill Stephen Black, or didn't he? If he did, then Maxine is lying to cover her ass for her daughter's sake. If he didn't, then Maxine's been hoodwinked by someone, probably Raimes, all things considered.

"Dinner's ready!" Clara yells from the kitchen, interrupting your thoughts. You have to move the table around (there's only one chair, so she sits on the side of the bed), but soon enough you're both sitting down and digging into her grilled cheese. She waits for you to eat first, staring at you as you pick up the sandwich and eat it, an obvious mix of hope and anxiety on her face.

It's pretty good, actually. "You were right about the butter," you say, and she takes a bite while you talk. "It does bring out the taste."

"Well," she says, chewing what's left in her mouth before speaking further, "my culinary expertise is just one of the many skills that will be at your constant disposal if we get married!"

"I said I'd think about it."

"Okay, okay," she says, looking appropriately chastised. "I was just saying..."

Alright, and that's it for today! We went longer than usual, which was nice! I think I updated a little slower than usual, though, which was not nice! Anyway, I'm glad you guys were here. Hopefully the next thread will be on Monday at 2-something Central Time, and with any luck, we'll be able to wrap things up that time!

I really would've preferred to wrap things up today, in part just for the aesthetic of running a quest for exactly five days in exactly one week, but I guess it just wasn't quite in the cards.

Thanks for running, man. I work at an arcade, and we don't get much business on Halloween. Your quest made a dull day rather less so.

thanks for running!
oh, and don't worry, i prefer a late ending to a rushed one
