In the world of Valaer, the Battle of Tirinia changed everything. That was 680 years ago.

Here lies the human Kingdom of Therindel - less a Kingdom than a confederacy of lordships, duchies, principalities, city-states, et cetera - banded together under the constant threat of attack from the mysterious Wood Elves of the eastern land of Xalfacia. For many centuries, these lords and rulers have bickered amongst each other for the right to succeed the King who fell in battle at Tirinia against the Elves.

Until ten years ago however, when Lord Leandros Lysandros Layton Lamarr the Fiftieth declared his capital city open to all lords and masters for trade, commerce, and alliance. This city within this divided kingdom is the High City of Imperial City! This is the city of adventure, where Adventurers gather to duel, to brag of their accomplishments, and receive missions from the needy and the poor! This is the city where Heroes and Legends are made!

You are not one of those people.

You are Kasimir Kanenas. A few years ago you came to the High City of Imperial City for opportunity and work, only to find yourself in the deep straits of poverty. There is one good way of making money however, and that is exploiting the naivety of adventurers and their belief in the importance of all things. It’s a meagre living, but it’s a living for you, as a poor trader in these hard times.

A pair of fiddlers came in from Merrill’s Crossing down by Rawshire this morning, and have been keeping the Market Square alive with music ever since they came. They were respectively a young man, with sharp cheekbones and short blonde hair with brown eyes, and a young girl with a neat little sunhat with a bow on it. The both of them didn’t look much like adventurers, more like just travelers seeking to bring some music in.

As you took stock, Miss Eckhardt read her book, tapping her foot to the music. Rusky the Husky dog sat by her feet, still a bit sleepy.

You weren’t happy for a few reasons. One, it was cold. Two, a light flaking of snow was beginning. Three, you haven’t had sex with a woman in a few days, at least not counting Stiina and that’s because you barely remember that. And four, you’re still poorer than an Elf begging for reconciliation. You sigh, holding a clay bowl, speaking of Elves, you could probably pass this off as another Elven artifact.

At least you have a roof over your heads now, and Miss Eckhardt was discussing plans to insulate it with more wood and more timber. But that’s her problem and her money, not yours. You have to keep thinking for yourself, and occasionally your mother. At least you made the monthly payment of a hundred silver last week. You barely made that payment, but with this new business venture with Miss Eckhardt, you might start having leftover cash for once.

Anyway, bowls are good. Boxes are good. Sacks are good. Weird dreamcatcher thingy is good as well. You’re surprised no one’s went for that, adventurers love vaguely mystical things.

Miss Eckhardt adjusts her glasses a bit, looking up at you. “Mister Kanenas.”

“Miss Eckhardt.” You place a dusty old potion glass on a shelf. It creaks loudly. You take the glass off then put it down on the counter.

“You play any instruments?” Oh, how else would you show your love for the King? Then again, it’s been a while, especially since if you did have an instrument, you probably already sold it for spare change.

What did you play?

Ah, now you remember. “I used to play a Reso Guitar. Something about that metallic twang it has over a regular guitar really gets me, not sure how to describe it.” You shrug leaning on the counter and crossing your arms. “Practiced with my Dad’s old Reso for some time, even brought it over here from Solarno. Played a bit for extra cash, but I couldn’t make the rent one month. Had to sell it.”

Miss Eckhardt frowns. “Aw, that’s… I couldn’t imagine selling my father’s items.”

“I can, it got me through two months at least,” you say. Miss Eckhardt quirks her brow at that, in disbelief. “I’m not a fan of my father, okay?” She nods understandably. “What about you, I haven’t seen you play anything.”

“Well, there’s no human on this good green Valaer that doesn’t know how to work with music,” says Miss Eckhardt. “Me, I play a simple fiddle and well… that’s it. The adventurers I rolled with usually had music going and I’d join them occasionally.”

“You don’t talk about your adventuring days much.” Your curiosity has been piqued. Miss Eckhardt sighs, still frowning. “Don’t want to talk about it?”

“It’s not something you’d care about,” she says. “Way I see it anyway…” She narrows her eyes at you. “I’d reckon you were trying to seduce me, Mister Kanenas.”

You size her up. Her breasts are nothing special, but those legs of hers underneath those black stockings. And you did catch a peak of her very firm rear when she bent over to pick up a book. She looks at you, very knowingly behind those cute glasses of hers. She’d probably be a bit cuter too if she let down her hair as well.

Okay, she’s not wrong, but you’re not going to let her know that.

“Anyway,” says Miss Eckhardt. “I think once we’re done for today, I’ll head down to the public baths.” She shuts her book and raises her arms, stretching. “Ugh… I must smell like an Elf.” She smells lovely actually, she’s probably just trying to get to you. “Why don’t you join me, Mister Kanenas? You could use a bath.”

You roll your eyes. “Public baths are expensive, fifty silver a person.”

“Yeah, but.” She stands up, walks over to you, then takes a whiff of your shoulder. She immediately recoils, gagging. “Ugh! You smell like the Wood Elves of Xalfacia! You could raise a graveyard with how bad you smell!”

… You don’t smell that bad, do you?

“She’s right!” says Satchel as he passes by with a crate of arrows in his hands..

This would actually explain a lot as to why you never get any customers.

But then again, fifty silver? Pfft.

You narrow your eyes at her. “Why can’t I just buy some soap and stand out in the rain?”

“Because that’s not sanitary,” she says. “Come on, maybe you’ll make some friends at the baths!” She bounces her eyebrows up and down. “Maybe meet a few girls too.”

“I’ve already shagged a few bath attendants, it’s nothing new,” you say. She blinks, she apparently did not see that coming. “But alright, fine. After this shift, and you have better have the hundred silver ready because I sure as heck ain’t paying for it.” She smiles at that, satisfied. She walks over to her book on the ground, then bends over to pick it up.

Mhm, very firm ass.

“Anyway,” says Miss Eckhardt. You immediately make eye contact when she turns around. “I hope we have a good round today! Might be able to afford some raw materials down at the docks to help expand our little home away from… well home.” Your stall is pretty sorry looking but it’s a stopgap measure until you can find something affordable.

There’s a knock at the counter. You turn to look and oh jeez. “Kasimir!” She smiles lovingly at you.

You fold your arms, glaring at Sloane. “What are you doing here, Sloane?”

Her smirks disappears and turns into a rather busy look. “Can we talk in private?” She looks over at Miss Eckhardt. “Sorry, Mommy and Daddy are talking.” Miss Eckhardt harumphs, glaring at Sloane as well. You roll your eyes, then hop over the counter and walk with Sloane across the way and talk between a pair of empty stalls. Miss Eckhardt can still see you, but she probably won’t be able to hear you.

“Right, what’s the deal? I paid you last week,” you say. Sloane pulls out a simple smoking pipe then starts lighting up. “If you want to rut some more, I have to tell you now, I’m not going to lay with my loan shark.”

“I prefer the term debt collector,” she says simple. She smiles up at you. You tower over a foot over the short little brunette. She puffs out a ring of smoke. “Besides, it’s not that. Unless-“ You shake your head. “Okay, let me be straight with you. Your mother sold the house, used the money to help pay the debt.”

You blink. “She what?” Something twitches at the back of your head. “She did what?” Sloane looks at you with a “you heard me” look. You groan, burying your face in your hands. She really sold the house! What was she thinking!?

“If it’s any consolation,” says Sloane. “It helped pay a large part of the debt. Now at the rate you pay it, it’s only another two or three years until you pay it off.” You glare at her. “Don’t worry, she’s safe. A friend of hers is quartering her, they live down on Ashbrooke, you know the nice neighborhood.” Well, that’s kind of comforting.

“Okay, why are you here then? You could’ve just sent a letter,” you say.

“Because now ‘they’ are not confident you can keep paying the debt. Especially if your Moms is forced to pay with the house.” Oh great. Here it comes. “We need a reason to believe you can keep paying at the rate you pay, a hundred silver monthly. Which means, they want a down payment for part of the debt by tonight.”

“How much?”

“Seven hundred silver.”

You advance on her. “I am going to tan your ass so raw people will use it as armor!” She backs up into the stall, frightened. “You want me to pay seven hundred silver by tonight?! That’s seven months worth of payment! What in the name of the King makes you think I can pay it off by then!? Are you so dense or has all the blood in your head rushed straight to your-“

“Kasimir, please,” she holds her hands up. You’ve realized you’ve basically forced her into a corner. You look over to see Miss Eckhardt, looking at you worriedly. You sigh, stepping back and giving Sloane some place. “Look, I’m not trying to extort you or anything. They want it by tonight, there’s room for error but they’d prefer tonight.”

“They ain’t getting anything tonight, I’m lucky if I break two hundred,” you say.

She bites her lip, frowning as she pulls her smoking pipe from her lips. “Look, Kasimir, I want to help you too. Heck, I’d pay for your mother to come over and live with you if I could but, you know. Work is work, money is money. Can’t you make the payment?”

“I could if I sold off everything I had,” you say. “And maybe convinced Miss Eckhardt to prostitute herself. But that’s not going to happen. That’d just be prolonging the inevitable.”

Sloan sighs, rubbing the bridge of her nose and closing her eyes frustratedly. “Jeez.” She opens her eyes at and looks up at you. “Tell you what, um… for old time’s sake, Kasimir. You know, there’s a lot of adventurers here to scam coming in this morning and you know… I could help pay some of the price.” You can see her legs tremble a bit.

Ugh, you know where this is going.

“I should say no but…” You look down at Sloane. As much as you detest her line of work, the girl is attractive, very attractive. And you certainly have first hand experience of what she’s like in bed. She talks in her sleep though. “Fine, but if you ever ask me of this again, I will send you on your ass out of Therindel.”

She grins, patting your cheek. “Lovely!” She starts walking away. “Just aim for about four hundred by today. I can handle the rest.” With that through, she waves and walks off.

You sulk a bit as you step back over the counter, then sit down next to Miss Eckhardt. “What was that about?” she asks.

“Long story, but I need about four hundred silver by the end of today, you think we can do it?”

She shrugs. “I suppose we can.” The morning bell rings. Rusky cranes his neck back and howls to the tune of it. “So, is she some sort of loan shark?”

“Yeah,” you say. “I’ve got a debt to pay. Don’t worry, it’s my money, not yours. You can keep whatever you earn.” Miss Eckhardt frowns at that. “No really, keep what you earn. Let me sell and focus.”

“Alright,” she says, looking ahead. The first few customers start roaming the Square, looking at the wares of many merchants and travelers. Many stalls have everything, from insulated walls, shutters to keep out the cold, personal heralds to advertise goods, the works. The crowd seems a bit thin today. You’ll be lucky to sell anything.

Aloysious says, “Well, aangename kennismaking!” He turns, trying to reach into his satchels on his back. You can hear the clattering of a frying pan and the clinking of potions within. “Now, Miss Strafniki has assured me, that you would be willing to sell a product of mine! One that is most well-tested and most assured an efficient and well-suited weapon of war!” He throws a satchel down on your counter. You reach and pull it out. It appears to just be some kind of stick, with a bit of metal welded to it. “There it is!” You look down what appears to be a hole. “Oh, don’t do that!” He pushes your head back.

“What is it?” you ask.

“This, is a schietgeweer!” he boasts. “A magiarm! Uses magical cap to combust and propel a cast-iron ball about the size of your fingernails to lethal speeds! It’s not loaded right now, but I’d be happy to demonstrate!”

“How does it work?” You narrow your eyes. “How did you make this thing work? You’re a giant bird!”

“I got creative.” He sighs, a frown evident on his face. “Unfortunately, no one seems to appreciate it. In fact uh… no one seems to appreciate anything I build.”

You heft it a bit, trying to find a proper way to hold it. “Well, I can certainly sell this if I can sell a plain bowl for twenty silver.” He grins at that, his head bouncing up and down with glee. “What would you say the price for this would be?”

“Well, that is a unique prototype, worth thousands of silver!” he yells.

You blink at him, really?

He sighs. “Okay, we can do with three hundred silver. That’s survivable I suppose.” He flutters his wings a bit. “But Mister Kanenas, understand that what you are holding is more lethal than any sword, bow, or anything else!”

“Can this penetrate dragon skin?” you ask. You might as well get an eye for capability.

“Neen.”

“How much ammo can this fire?”

“One ball then you have to reload. It takes about a minute.”

“How accurate?”

“Can probably hit the broadside of a barn at one-hundred meters!”

“… can you use this as a club?” You’re starting to see why he has trouble selling this thing.

He shrugs. “I suppose. The metal barrel would hold it together pretty well.”

“Fine, I’ll figure something out,” you say. You place the Schietgeweer on your shelf. “As for you, Mister Aloysious, would you like to stick around? It is your invention.”

“No, no,” he says. “I will be with the music players. Do inform when you’ve sold it, and I can split the money with you, fifty fifty!” With that, he flaps his wings and leaps away to another part of the Market Square.

Welp. Miss Eckhardt looks at you, skeptical. “Don’t give me that look.”

“Adventurers, come! Are you in need of a weapon that provides the punch of a rhino but the range of a catapult!? Do you want to kill something just with a squeeze of your fingers!?” You catch a few looks here and there, nothing sticking. You hold up the Schietgeweer. “This weapon provides all you need, and more! With but a…” Miss Eckhardt hands you the manual Aloysious left behind. “Thank you, dear.” You quickly flip through it. “With but a squeeze of the crescent trigger here, all you have to do is point this at whatever you want dead, and most assuredly it will be dead!”

An adventurer walks up, a large man with a bald head, and many furs on his armor. Must be a northerner. “Was dat?” he asks, pointing to the weapon. Yep, definitely a northerner.

“The correct term is Schietgeweer! A unique weapon, so powerful, but with a history so clouded, even I don’t know where I got it!” you say. Gotta exaggerate, these people have seen a lot and done a lot. “Here, why don’t you hold it?”

He swipes the weapon from you, his hands on the stock. He looks over it. “’Ow’s it wohk?”

“Simple, you see the hole in it?” He looks down it. “That is where your projectile is discharged. You squeeze the trigger and whatever you want dead will be dead! All for the price of about three-hundred silver good sir.”

“Uh…” You can tell by the glazed look in his eyes and the drool dripping down his lips that he’s not very bright. Perfect customer. You hold up a manual and a spare bag of projectiles. It does indeed come with those you loon. “Uh...”

You step beside him, finding that he actually has two heads over on you. “Listen, boyo. This weapon here goes boom! And anything on the business end of it will die so hard that their ancestral bloodline will cease to exist, all the ghosts will die of a hole in their heart because of this weapon here!” You jab your finger on the wood of the schietgeweer. The adventurers squints his eyes towards it, now a bit attentive. “Whaddya say?”

“Kay.” He opens up his inventory rift, then hands off three hundred silver to you. Excellent! He walks off with the manual and the spare ammo along with the weapon in hand.

You sit down, kicking your feet up on the counter. “Well, whaddya say to that, Miss Eckhardt?”

She shrugs. “I didn’t say anything. But that weapon will never catch on.”

“Eh.” You stuff some hardtack into your mouth. “I’m a businessman, not an arms dealer.”

You pat Miss Eckhardt on the head as you stand up. She blushes furiously, looking away and glaring at some place else. “Keep things under control, I gotta give Aloysious his share.”

She crosses her arms. “Fine, but never pat me on the head again, pervert.” You roll your eyes as you count off the one-hundred fifty silver for him, then move on out. You’re at least two-hundred and fifty silver closer to your goal for today.

The people gather around a few guardsmen, playing their instruments in the square. They play the old tune, “The Battle Cry of Freedom”. Aloysious is one of those observing. “Aloysious,” you say. He turns to you, then sees the money you have in your hand. He laughs, hobbling up to you and hugging you with his wings. You spit out some hairs of his feathers. Ugh, Vogelvolk.

“Joyous!” he says, taking the silver from you and stepping off. “Mister Kanenas, it appears Miss Strafniki was right about you!”

You shrug. “Of course she was.” You cross your arms. “So what are you up to now, Aloysious?”

“Well…” He taps his beak, deep in thought. “Was thinking of staying around a bit. Perhaps pitch a design or two to Lord Lamarr himself, he is looking for something new to export to the other Therindel nations. Speaking of which, I hear talk of a joust coming soon!”

“In a few weeks,” you say. “Why do you ask?”

“Was thinking I could pitch my ideas to the other Lords! Perhaps the Black Baron himself! But that’s wishful thinking!” Aloysious offers his wing to you, which you shake politely. “Thank you for your service, Mister Kanenas. Perhaps I will call upon you later!”

You walk back to your stand, to see Stiina and Miss Eckhardt conversing casually. Stiina herself is knelt down, petting Rusky vigorously on the head. “… and so then I said to him, he shouldn’t need to worry. Way I see it, he’s probably still worrying,” says Stiina. They both look at you, smiling very…

You don’t know the word, but if you do, it probably has something to do with deceit. “I miss something?” you say.

“Oh, just girl talk,” says Miss Eckhardt. “You wouldn’t be interested.” She jiggles a bag of silver. “Speaking of which, I sold a book, two-hundred silver right there, Mister Kanenas!”

She shrugs. “Just wanted to see if you sold that piece of crud Aloysious wanted to sell.”

“Well, I sold it.” You hop back over the counter. Stiina smiles at that, happy to know her labors are not in vain. “So thanks for sending that little bit of business my way. I hope you got more in mind?”

“Well, Aloysious is one of those struggling types. You can always go to him if you need something to sell,” she says. “Anyway…” She reaches into her satchel and pulls out a gold piece, worth about two-hundred silver. “This gold piece here was found on the floor a few weeks back. No one’s come to claim it.”

Miss Eckhardt leans in. “Oooh, lost and found?”

“Yeah, we tried to find the owner, must’ve been someone big to lose a gold piece and not care about it,” says Stiina. “Anyway, rules dictate that the Guardsman who recovers the item may do with it at their discretion.” She hands it to you. “And at my discretion, I was wondering if you wanted it.”

“Depends, are you going to buy anything?” you say.

She quirks her brow. “No?”

“Then no,” you say.

Stiina sighs. “For King’s sake, I’m not loaning this, I’m giving it to you. Just take it.”

“Buy something at least.” You pick up a box. “Maybe this box! You can put some amount of potions in this box! And it’s exactly worth one gold piece!”

She stares at the box, not amused. Then she relents and hands it off to you. “Fine.” You hold the gold piece in your hand as she takes it. “Seriously, Kasimir. I know you don’t like charity, but learn to take money when its looking you in the face.”

“Never,” you say. You take a look at the gold piece. It’s a larger piece, a Standard. Not like the little ones which are only partially gold, this is MOSTLY gold. On it is the emblem of Therindel, and on the other side is the crown and the crossed swords, the emblem of the King. “Anyway,” you say, “Thanks, Stiina. But listen, I will never take charity, no matter what. I can make money on my own.”

Miss Eckhardt says, “And if you don’t?”

“Then I starve to death.” You shrug at that. “Nothing too big.”

Stiina sighs. “Oh well. I’ll be at Bureaugard’s if you need me.”

You sit down. With one-hundred fifty from the weapon and two hundred from this gold coin, you only need fifty more silver. The sun is already past its highest point, and soon the cold is going to start setting in.

A little girl comes up to the counter. Miss Eckhardt smiles at her. “Oh, hello there, child! See something you like?” She points to one of the books. “Oooh…” She takes the particular book from the stack. “The Bane of the Elves by Quinton Quill, good author. This is a second edition.”

She smiles, a gap in her two front teeth evident. “Can I buy it, Miss?”

“Sure, two-hundred silver!”

The girl calls, “Mommy!” A woman, carrying a bag of groceries walks over. “Mommy, can I have this book!”

The woman sighs. “No, sweetums, we need the food.” She takes the girl’s arm and starts pulling her away. “Come on!” The girl cries out, wanting the book. Miss Eckhardt deflates a bit, her smile gone.

You quickly step in front of the mother. “Excuse me, mum, but are you sure you wouldn’t be interested in this book?” You hold the book up in front of her, smiling. She stares at you with her very tired eyes. You look her up and down, she seems pretty curvy underneath that dress.

Nope, stick to work.

“No,” she says. “We can’t afford that price. We gotta think about food first. Books can come later.”

You sigh, tapping the book a bit. “Well, mum. Perhaps I can run a discount for you.” Miss Eckhardt tilts her head, a bit confused. “One-hundred fifty.”

She rolls her eyes. “Please.”

“One hundred,” you say. You really need this money.

The girl tugs on the mother’s dress. “Come on, mommy.” The mother groans, defeated. “Please?”

“Fine…” She reaches into her bag, then hands off a sack of one-hundred silver off to you. The girl takes the book happily, smiling. The two leave you without another word. With that done, you sit down to Miss Eckhardt again, happy.

You nod, splitting off fifty silver for her and fifty silver for yourself. That means four-hundred all ready. “Well, you’ll learn. It’s not something I can particularly teach. It’s more of how you understand people and how you can otherwise just understand what they want. Understand?”

“Sort of.” She opens up a book, then goes to read. She seems a bit sour today.

“Oi, you! Adventurer!” A burly adventurer with potions on his belt is attracted to your call. “Listen, I can see ye got lots of potions on yer belt there, see!” He nods, adjusting his belt a bit. “Well, y’ever consider the possibility of them ever breaking?”

He shakes his head. “No sir, potion glass is pretty strong.”

“Well…” You cross your arms. Miss Eckhardt watches you, intently. “I tell you what, I remember the story of the last adventurer who said that. Fell on his arse, broke all the potion glasses, got ‘em in his back and was on fire in the next second.” The adventurer goes pale at that. “I can see y’ain’t stupid. So let me sell you something preventative.”

You place down a jewelry box. “Introducing the Potion Protector! Can hold one potion securely and soundly and be ready for use in seconds. All for the price of ten each.” You place down more, and then place down a large box. “And I’ll throw in this Potion protector box for fifty silver as well! What do you say, laddy?”

He scratches his chin. “Um… I’m not sure. Aren’t those just boxes?”

“Pfft…” You roll your eyes. “Fine, let the glass shards show they’re just boxes.”

“Wait!” The adventurer reaches out to you. “Okay, ten for each right?” You nod. “I’ll take ten and I’ll buy the Box too.” Excellent! You were hoping to get rid of this stuff anyway. You count up his silver as he starts furiously loading his potions into the protectors.

“I can’t believe that worked,” says Miss Eckhardt.

“It would’ve worked yesterday had you not butted in,” you say. She rolls her eyes. Rusky whines, resting his head in her lap. With that, the adventurer is gone, and has left you one-hundred and fifty silver. Excellent.

You cross your arms as you both settle into one of the local taverns. The band plays some relatively clam music as people eat their dinners and talk amongst each other. It’s mostly adventurers in town for the Joust coming up at the end of the month, nothing to concern yourself with.

You eat your dinner, carrot and peas, a cut of steak, and some mashed potatoes, all on Sloane’s dime. She busily counts off the silver you have collected, also factoring in the gold piece. She scratches on a scroll to indicate total payment, making sure to inflate it a bit with her part of the payment and crediting it as yours. Good old Sloane looking out for you despite sharking your money.

“Mhm…” She licks her lips, still picking off the silver. “Righto. Looks like everything’s in order, Kasimir. You’ve got your four-“ She coughs. “Sorry, seven hundred silver! I should congratulate you.”

“Kasimir!” Stiina skips up to you, then takes a sniff. “Whoo, you smell like you just-“ You look at her. “Oh.” Stiina whistles a bit. “Well, ain’t that something.” She crosses her arms. “Anyway, me and Eckhardt were just talking about you two going down to the Baths tonight.”

You nod. “Yeah, what about it?”

“I figure I’d join you,” you say. “In fact!” she snaps her finger. “I happen to know the owner of the Bathhouse on Wirmly and King’s Avenue-“

“Is that the one with the big public pool and the private rooms?” you ask. Stiina and Miss Eckhardt look at you, surprised. You shrug. “I shagged one of the attendants to get a free bath there.”

Stiina giggles a bit, blushing. “Jeez, Kasimir…” She waves it off, her giggle turning into a fit of laughter. “Ahaha! Anyway, I was hoping I’d join you. Maybe pay to get you some rooms for yourselves so you don’t have to worry about the crowd.”

You cross your arms. “I should say no…” You look at Miss Eckhardt, who frowns at you. “But I suppose that would be lovely, thank you, Stiina.” They both smile, happy that you’ve swallowed your pride for the night. “Anyway, looks like we’re closing up the stall for tonight…” You look at your stall, to see some sort of black case. “What’s that?”

Miss Eckhardt slides in front of you. “Nothing.”

“It doesn’t-“

They immediately push you away. “Come on! Rusky will guard the place, won’t you, Rusky?”

Rusky happily sits by the stall, wearing a blanket over him given by Miss Eckhardt. Right beside him is a hastily written sign that says, “BEWARE OF DOG”. Rusky growls and snarls at Satchel as he walks by. Rusky barks madly at him until Satchel runs away.

“Welcome to the High City’s finest bathhouse!” says the Orc bathhouse owner. The white porcelain and the high columns indicate how high class a place like this is. Even so, the average person can afford to come here and get clean, but you aren’t exactly the average person. “Ah, Miss Strafniki, nice to see you again!”

Stiina smiles, setting down a sack of silver. “Private rooms for us.”

“Sure thing!” he says. He takes a bell from the counter and rings it. A pair of very lovely bath attendants come out from around the corner, dressed in fine white robes that cling to their bodies like mist and accentuate their curvy legs. They both look at you, and giggle, blushing.

Oh, wait. It wasn’t just the one, it was both of them.

You’re led into your private bathroom, a large room with a pool of crystal clear water in the center of it. At a little table nearby are the various soaps, shampoos, and other fine luxuries needed for bathing. The bath attendant who led you in smiles at you, in a very sultry manner. “If you need anything, just call,” she coos. She shuts the door quietly behind you.

Meanwhile in the next room, Miss Eckhardt and Stiina are already beginning their bath.

You lie back in the bath, the soap and water washed all over your body. You took a look at yourself in the mirror at one end of the room. You are skinnier than a victim of the Great Winter and you hadn’t realized it. All that hard tack is not filling it seems. You sigh, at least it keeps you from starving to death. You can’t faintly hear the muttering of Miss Eckhardt and Stiina through the wall.

Hm… it would be rude to listen in.

Eh, go for it. You scoot up out of the bath, then press your ear against the cold wall.

“… and so, I’ve been serving with the City Guard since I was your age actually. Had to pay for most of my equipment. I really just wanted to get out of my sister’s brothel you know?”

“Oh, my party had to stay at a brothel once, it is nice a quiet place to stay in the night.”

“I know. I’ve been living pretty quietly in my own little apartment. Rent’s a bit expensive but the pay for a City Guard is pretty good. I was hoping I’d bring Kasimir into it but he never accepts. I can sort of see why considering how skinny he is.” Even she agrees. “Plus, I don’t think that boy’s ever held a weapon in his life. I don’t think he’d make a good guard.”

“I guess he understands his own limits.”

“Unlike your adventurers?”

“We were always pushing our limits, always risking things. We once camped out at the top of a mountain that was being circled by a Dragon! I didn’t sleep that night, I was too scared. And despite it all, no one… no one took me under their wing or said it’d be okay. You know, my brother told me this adventuring business would be fun and exciting! And it was, for the first month, but then I realized I just-…” She pauses a bit. “I’m a bookish kind of girl, okay? I’m not a fighter, I’m not a wizard, I’m just a girl. Adventurers aren’t into girls they might step on.”

“Oh, don’t give yourself crud for that. We all have our ways of living. But, Eckhardt, I think you might be under Kasimir’s wing.”

“Pffft. He’s probably just wanting to shag with me. That’s more than any adventurer would want from me at least.”

“Take it from me, Eckhardt. Kasimir’s a good lad. A bit weird when it comes to shagging drunk women like me I suppose but… He’s nice. When he wants to be.”

“How come you and him aren’t an item?”

“He’s got too much pride. He’ll learn yeah.” There’s a pause. “You know, with the Joust coming up, the Lords are going to be bringing in their Free Companies. I was hoping I would join up with them.”

“Really? Why?”

“I want to get out of the City. See the world. I’ve been here for my entire life, I want to see what the world has to offer for me. I mean, yeah, I’ll come back, but… I sure as heck don’t want to spend my entire life here.”

“Hm.”

“I’ll probably tell Kasimir about it soon. Hell, I’ll have to let the neighborhood know about it. They all love me.”

“Then why aren’t you staying? You’ve got family here.”

“I do, but family can keep you down. I want to keep moving with my life. I don’t want to be City Guard Strafniki forever. I want to travel and make a difference by the sword and the spear! It’d be enough for me to cross the ocean and see the Orc Lands, where silk grows on trees and fabrics are woven from nothing. Or see the Frozen North, where the ancient battlefields lie. You hear about those all the time, but you never see them. I want to see them.”

The door opens, revealing a bath attendant. “Are you finished with your bath, Mister Kanenas?” You take a whiff of yourself.

Eh, good enough.

“Not yet,” you say. You sigh as you sit down back in the bath. The bath attendant bites her lip, blushing a little as she closes the door. Oh right, you had sex with her. Probably why she asked if you were done. Oh well, you’ve had enough for today.

Honestly, you’ve had quite a bit for today.

But finally after another ten minutes of washing, bathing, lathering, and soaping, you’ve finished. You take a sniff of yourself, and find that you actually smell of strawberries now. You like strawberries. Hmph, that’s nice. You step out of the bath, clothed and ready to move on. Your clothes feel warm and soft, they even took the time to wash and dry them for you while you were bathing. Now that’s service.

You walk over to the other bath. You know Stiina’s done at least, but what about Miss Eckhardt? You open up the door. “Miss Eckhardt, are you finished?”

She’s bent over, her naked rear in the air as she ties up her garters to her stockings. She turns to you, surprised.

You don’t know what you were expecting, so you close the door. You find that Stiina was standing behind you, giggling and trying to hold in furious laughter. Ugh, you will never hear the end of this.

“Eeeek.” Miss Eckhardt lazily screams from the bath.

-

You three begin the walk back to your stall. The cold has already begun to set in, and you shiver slightly. “Cold, Kasimir?” asks Stiina. You shake your head. “Typical.” The two girls look warm as can be in their coats and cloaks. “Are you sure you don’t want to stay at my place? You’ll catch your death out here.”

You sigh. “You know what, fine, Stiina.” She grins, happily. “But only this once. Never again.”

Miss Eckhardt says, “Oh, I better get Rusky and a few things from the stall then. You two go on ahead, I’ll catch up.” Before you offer to walk her there, she’s already far ahead of you, running into the cold. You sigh, as Stiina leads you onto her apartment.

“Come on,” says Stiina. “It’ll be fun! I got a fireplace and everything!”

-

-

You poke and prod at the fireplace, a blanket around your shoulders as Stiina changes out in her room. Her apartment is on the ground floor, which means luckily she gets to have a fireplace. Once the fire is burning sufficiently, you hover your hands by it, warming up immensely. It’s been ages since you had a warm night’s sleep.

Stiina comes out of her room, wearing a very short blue nightgown. “Hey, Kasimir. Got room under that blanket?” She walks on over, then sits down and tucks herself underneath your blanket with you.

“So, how much for the night?” you ask.

“Please.” Stiina rolls her eyes.

“I’m just saying, I’m using your fireplace, I’m sleeping on your couch, what next?” You really don’t want to deal with this. Ugh, today has just been stressful.

“Well, there’s always Eckhardt,” she says. You glare at her. “Come on, I’ve seen the way you stare at her.” She gives a very playful smirk. “I think she has a nice ass too. I’d use that ass to plow a beanfield.” You roll your eyes.

The door opens up, revealing Miss Eckhardt with Rusky at her side. She carries a few books in her satchel and large black case. “Hey, I’m back!” She dusts some frost off her cloak. “Kasimir. I’ve got something for you!”

You cross your arms. “What is it now?” you ask. She sets the case down in front of you. Jeez, gifts that you have to repay now. Ugh… what could she possibly have in that case that she’s opening up-

… No. Is that?

You take it from the case, setting it your lap. “It’s a Reso.”

She smiles, sitting down by the fire with Rusky. “I figured, you’d want to keep the Reso, keep you busy. No good person in Therindel has no way of playing the King’s gospel.” You feel the soft metal of the resonators on the guitar, the steel strings, all of it so finely crafted. This must have cost her! “I spent my own money, don’t worry.”

“It’s making me worry now,” you say. Stiina playfully slaps you on the arm. You sigh, looking at Miss Eckhardt. “I…” You smile. “Thank you, Miss Eckhardt.”

She smiles as well, scooting in close to you, leaning on your shoulder. “Can you still play?” You grab the slide from the case. Time to find out.

Everything just comes to you naturally. You feel a bit rusty, but everything just clicks, as if second nature. This isn’t anything strange, all good humanfolk know their music. The King himself made it one of his finest diplomatic techniques. If he couldn’t talk, he would sing to them. Music was the universe translator.

Everything just feels better now.

Stiina smiles. “It’s lovely.” Rusky barks, and you pet him on the head. Good boy must have kept it safe from anyone who might have wanted to steal this lovely thing. She checks the clock, a real luxury too. “Hm, I better get some sleep. I got to work early tomorrow. The couch is yours if you want it you two.” She steps out of your blanket, yawning as she steps into her room.

Miss Eckhardt smiles, hugging her legs. “So, how do you feel?”

Before Stiina goes to work tomorrow morning we should get up early and tell her and Eckhardtof our plan to become a travelling merchant, maybe ask Stiina if she'd like to come as protection if we join a caravan and Eckhardt if she'd like to be our partner in sales, giving her a taste of the adventurous life but at a pace and level she's more comfortable with.

Backing this.

Kasimir's fortunes have had a drastic swing. Being poor and selling trash to survive for a number of months/years, and now he's suddenly earning a somewhat liveable wage. Plus, he kinda got hit by the consequences of his pride on himself and others; his mother was forced to sell her own home for his sake, and he's as malnourished as fuck.

> “Great.”
> “I don’t know how to repay you for this.”
> “I can’t thank you enough.”
Seems like a logical progression
>>
>>35842861
/tg/ drops everything when it comes to their waifus
>>
>>35842969
Yeah, I see this phase as him realising how his pride is hurting him and those he cares for, and learning to put it aside when necessary for them.

He ain't getting ride of his pride, just being sensible with it around friends and loved ones.

What pride tho? We haven't beem prideful beside not taking charity.

You shake your head. “I don’t know how to repay you for this, Miss Eckhardt. Truly… I can’t thank you enough for this. This is-…” You pause, recovering yourself for a bit. Miss Eckhardt looks down for a bit, blushing. “These are hard times we live in. I feel like the King himself right now with how much you and Stiina are spoiling me.”

“We’re not spoiling you,” she says. “We’re helping.” You nod at that. Helping. King’s sake. You look at her, to see her blush a little more. “I-… if you want, you can pet my head.”

You chuckle. “Hehe… I got something better.” You pull her close, right onto your lap even. You set the guitar down in front of her. “Here, why don’t I teach you?”

“Really?” she says. “I-… I never played guitar.”

“Hey, all us humanfolk know music. It’ll be easy.” You take her hand, then guide it over the strings. You take the steel and hover it over the fret. “Right, it’s easy. Pluck that first string.” She picks the string, and it plays a lovely tune. “Good, good,” you whisper. You pet her head, and you can see her redden up intensely, smiling as she plucks another note without your prompting. “Whoo, eager are we?”

“Sorry.”

“No, no.” You grin, chuckling. “Here, let’s go for a simple roll. Pluck them in the order I tell you. First that one, then that one, and that one.” She picks at them, happily. You use the steel to guide along the fret, getting the notes you need. “You’re getting the hang of it.” You happily let her sit in your lap, teaching her how to play the resonator she bought for you.

Miss Eckhardt just found a place in your heart.

dawwww

now we just need Stiina to play an instrument or sing and we have another thing to market on the road when we go Travelling Merchant and Friends Quest

>>35843229
Thanks for the thread Schteel.
>>
>>35843229
Aw, that was a heartwarming end.

Is this quest supposed to be this comfy?
>>
>>35843199
>didn't pet her head before teaching her
Shit/10
Dropped
>>
>>35843040
Yeah some people 2 ant to say something as soon as tomorrow. .
we should focus on paying the loan off first. I'm down for learning basic self defense. From stinna. And I guess eat twice as much hard tack a day. Would be a nice start.
>>
>>35843199
A-arent we cheating on Stiina a bit?
>>
>>35843275
We just need to get her to sing with us to go with the music.
>>
>>35843229
Thanks Schteel! THIS is quite possibly the best quest you have run yet. Please run more of this as soon as you can!
>>
>>35843229

Thanks for running schteel.

Eckhardt is love but I still like Stiina.
>>
>>35843275
Not really. Just because someone finds a place in your heart, doesn't mean it has to be romantic. I wager Kashimir doesn't have many people he feels close too.
>>
>>35843199
Daw, also thanks gm for running
>>
>>35843327
They are both a best, on this we agree.
>>
>>35843275
Plus Kasimir and Stiina aren't actually together-together, they just had a one-night drunken romp and unresolved feelings.
>>
>>35843275
Not when we're aiming for both of them.
>>
>>35843229
thanks. awesome quest.

also how much silver do we have now?
>>
>>35843370
We need to find out if either or both of them can sing, because that would be an awesome way to make extra dosh when caravaning.

Thanks for running, Schteel! See you next time.

Eckhardt is like the little sister I wished we had. Stiina wants to get her adventure out of her system, then she would be a good waifu for us.
>>
>>35843270
sounds good. We should focus on our health. and some basic self defense never hurt.
Weither we leave or not. would be nice to also fix up our stall to make it more habitable.
GM said that 500 silver would make it just barely better than the last place we were at.
paying 70 silver a month.
>>
>>35843199
Great so far OP. Thanks for running.

Also, I love that song. Great choice.
>>
>>35843511
Schteel finds the best music around.

I totally think we should rent out our stall and go on the road with Stiina and Eckhardt selling our wares visiting the world, and then coming back to the capital after we're all adventure'd out.
>>
>>35843595
If we're leaving it'd be nice to rent it. But who would collect the money for us.
The only stand up guy I remember would be the Orc and idk..
W.e happens I still think it's worth it. To fix up our stall. Ours apparently looks like shit, like it's falling apart.
We looked like shit. We got a hair cut, and new cloths.
We had no wares. We have plenty of rare books we know their price due to our main study. And years as a merchant.
We smelled like shit. We took a shower and washed our cloths.
We need a stall that represents us as professionals, and hopefully fix up the back. big enough for two people to sleep and build it to withstand the colds of winter/insulate.

We need a place we can call our own. And if we do rent/sell it. It would still be worth the investment we can sell/rent it for more.
>>
>>35843798
also I count we've 320 silver. with 500 it's better than our old place.
So I guess 600-700 would make it a bit nicer. We've no big bills till next month.
>>
>>35843798
>But who would collect the money for us.
Mail drake's make that simple and easy.

Our parents in Magical Shop quest sent us letters and stuff while adventuring.
>>
>>35843798
>We need a place we can call our own.
We need to build a house for us, Stiina and Eckhardt, and have our stall connected to it.
>>
>>35844053

Is the stall formally owned by Kasimir? Or is it still technically city property but Kasimir has license to modify it/live in it?
>>
>>35844053
I don't think we can add a whole house to it..Would be great if we can.
But building room for two people comfortably* with well insulated walls* and making the shop look nicer. should be our biggest priority.
If we make that happen. We could even have Stiina move in with us. and further upgrade the house from there.
>>35844102
this that is something that should go in the ask. for the best answer.
>>35844026
And if they decide not to pay? who know where we will be, and how long it would take to get back there.
I think it'd be best to either sell it or have someone look over it. And send us money via mail drake. Orc would be good cause they wouldn't want to not pay an orc.
This is ofcourse IF we even leave.
>>
>>35843333
I still want both the only problem I imagine for getting both is how will Kashimir deal in supporting two women
>>
>>35844433
>implying they're not supporting him
>>
I feel bad for Sloane...for some reason. Can we visit her next thread...please?
