You quickly follow after Bagon as he leads you down another tunnel. Hopefully he’d know enough about these dragon caves to find a way out. He seemed very confident though, stomping his way around, sniffing the air on occasion.
You consider trying to communicate or check on him, but you’d rather not disrupt him from his work. So far, you seemed to be following mostly side passages, meaning Bagon was trying to avoid the more populated caves.

Would you like to do anything while you travel?

You stop moving for a moment to briefly focus with aura, just to be safe. There where a few pockets of that same regal aura in the caves around you, but the current course should steer you around most of them. You think Bagon has a good idea where most of the lairs are.

Blinking your eyes open, you catch up with the group.

"Hey Lisa," you whisper, "Any idea what other types of dragons we could find down here?"

"Only what my father mentioned," she replies softly, "Obviously there are Bagon down here, and I recall him mentioning something called Noibat as well. Those were supposedly rather small and flying, but not as hostile or territorial. He also mentioned a type of dragons that all had large wicked blades and weaponry attached to their heads, but can't remember what they were called."

"Once we get further north," she continues, "We'll start coming across the dragons in the desert, which will mostly be land sharks. The smaller ones won't be trouble except in large numbers, while the biggers ones will probably prove fairly difficult. A general rule of thumb is that if you see a dragon, picture it twice as large to figure out how scared you should be."

"I saw something earlier when I communicated with that Bagon, a big flying dragon with red wings."

"The wings were shaped like an axe?"

"Yeah, how did you know?"

"That's a Salamence. I've only heard tales of them," she says, "Supposedly they can lay waste to entire countrysides when angered, and very few have seen them and lived. The only ones I've heard of being domesticated are tales of a handful of warriors in Lurande, but even that's just rumors. If Bagon has seen one, I hope that we don't come across it, no matter what."

As you mentally note the various details, your attention is caught by a few high pitched noises coming from the tunnel ahead. Bagon stops suddenly, tramping his feet and steadying himself on the ground.

As you peer forward into the darkness, the noises slowly multiply and increase in volume, as a cloud of creatures with leathery wings come screeching through the tunnel, directly towards your group.

You quickly observe your surroundings, there's a few side tunnels nearby, on the left and right, though you have no way of knowing how far they go. The creatures themselves might be the Noibat Lisa mentioned, though she also said they weren't hostile.

The cloud will be on you in moments, so you needed to make a decision soon.

You opt to get down lower to the ground, trying to give the creatures room to fly overhead. The others, save for Bagon, follow suit.

Luckily, the creatures seem to be paying you little attention. As they fly by, Bagon tries to strike at a few with his skull and teeth, but has little success. A blast of flame from his mouth also misses its mark, but causes the creatures to divert their flight away from the small dragon.

After a few moments, the group has flown down the tunnel, leaving it quiet and empty once more. The only noise left is the sound of your breath, or so you think, but there's something else you can just barely hear.

It's a scraping sound, like a blade being sharpened, and it's coming from down the tunnel.

You spy it as you stand once more, a creature with bright green scales and wicked looking axe blades on either side of its jaw. It lazily tromps through the cave slowly, casually slicing at the cave walls as it walks.

You feel a sudden pressure on your arm, and you turn to see Lisa grabbing it. She gives you an intent look, and then mouths the words 'we need to go'.

This thing is easily your height, probably even a few feet more, though its hard to tell from this distance. It doesn't seem to have noticed you yet though. Bagon is staring at it rather intently, his feet still firmly planted on the ground.

There wasn't much time to act:
>Charge it now while its not looking

You point Lisa, Riolu, and Froakie towards a side passage, and they slowly move over to avoid detection. Meanwhile, you creep forward towards Bagon. You needed to make sure he wasn't going to confront this thing.

Once you get to him, you notice he's staring forward rather blank-eyed, and you can see his tiny arms trembling somewhat.
Seems he's not that foolish, though it does seem like he's a bit too scared to move at the moment.

You try and gently scoop him up in your arms, but he's much heavier than he looks. Instead you have to carefully heft him while avoiding making any noise. You make it to the tunnel entrance, but as you do, you hear a pebble clatter across the cave floor.

You hurry in deeper, motioning the rest of your group forward. You hear a low growl emanate from the tunnel behind you. You round a corner and focus, trying to get a glimpse of what its doing.

It's aura is very strong, though you can still make out the details of its movements. It's neared the position where you think you accidentally knocked that pebble, and is investigating some of the rocks nearby. Then you watch as its neck cranes up, and then lowers back down faster than you can follow. At the same moment, a loud crashing noise breaks your focus.

After a few tense seconds, you once again hear the slow scrapping sound from before disappear down the tunnel, though you still don't relax for another minute after that.

You focus in with aura to check once again, and the monster has definitely left the area. You exhale a sigh of relief. Signaling to Bagon to continue guiding you all through the tunnel. He grunts in affirmation, stomping his way across the rock, though its a bit softer this time.

The tunnels twist and turn a few more times before you finally reach a larger cavern. There's a large pool of water in the center, and the stone on the walls is more muddied and red than you've seen in the earlier caves.

You don't spot any creatures in this cave, though your group hangs close to the entrance just to be sure. Bagon directs your attention to a narrow passageway atop a slope that seems to head upwards. Maybe that's the way out?

You ask Lisa to keep watch while you go refill the water-skins. As you approach the edge, you notice that the ground is somewhat softer, almost like clay.

The water itself has a bit of scum near the edges, though it should be safe to drink. You uncap the bottles and top them off, making sure you'll have enough water to get through the desert. As you do so, Froakie moves up beside you and begins splashing himself with the water as well, before hopping in.

He disappears under the surface for a moment, and you peer through to try and watch him. You can see some movement, though the water seems much murkier deeper down. Just as you start to get worried, he poops back out of the surface again, hopping onto the shore. He seems very fresh and much more relaxed than earlier.

You don't think there's anything else of note, so you all move on to the slope, climbing up gradually to the tunnel leading towards the surface. As you reach down to help Lisa up, you notice Froakie waving at the pool, which seems to still have a few ripples on its surface from earlier. You make a note to try and give Froakie more chances to swim, seeing how much he enjoys it.

Once you're all up, you begin working your way upwards, mostly crawling through the narrow passage. The going is slow, but eventually you reach a tall and spacious cavern. The walls are a brown color, mostly a dirty orange tone, and you can spy a narrow crack in the ceiling where a few pinpricks of starlight are shining through. What catches your eye the most however, are the strange golden objects covering all the walls around the room.

A quick inspection of the cave reveals two exit tunnels to the right and left sides of the chamber, though you don't spot any good ways to climb up to the hole in the ceiling.

"Lisa, do you know what these things on the wall are?" you ask, using a hushed tone just in case they're alive.

"I think they're creatures from the desert. They usually only show up for a few weeks each year, though nobody really knows where they come from. This might be a nest of them, though they normally have green wings."

The objects on the wall do somewhat resemble certain monsters you've seen, mainly those in forests. Still, its probably for the best that you don't try and wake them.

Besides, you were almost to the surface. You just needed to figure out how to work your way upwards.

You first reach out with your aura, examining the creatures on the wall. You get a sense of stability, but also a similar regal sense. Both are heavily muted though, even more than usual when you observe a creature sleeping. Strangely, you don't recognize the usual color of simplicity you see from other insectoid monsters. None of them seem hostile, and in fact, none of them seem to even be aware of anything at all. You remember hearing that certain monsters sleep for large parts of the year. Maybe this is similar? It's odd that they don't have their wings though, looking more closely, they don't seem to have any legs either.

Next, you ask Bagon which direction you should go in, but he just scuffs the ground with his foot and looks downward. You don't think he knows where the tunnels lead from here.

Without your guide, you decide to just pick a passage, opting for the path to the right. It's rather steep, though you note the ground is rather sturdy. You spy tiny alcoves and narrow tunnels on the walls in various places, though you can't see anything inside of them.

After a few minutes of walking, the tunnel widens and opens up into a larger cave, and at the far end you can spy some moonlight shining from a rather sizable entrance. After taking a few steps forward however, you stop, spying a figure lurking near one of the rock formations that stretches from the floor to the ceiling. It's eyes glint yellow, piercing through the darkness as they glare at you. It hasn't made a move yet, though. Looking around the room, you see the sleeping figure of some smaller landsharks tucked into various nooks and crannies around the room.

You raise your hands up in order to appear more non-threatening. Gently moving forward.

"We don't want to fight," you say softly, "We just want to go outside. We don't want to hurt you or any of them."

The creature slowly moves forward, circling around cautiously. It edges closer to you, carefully glancing over you with its eyes. You keep your eyes trained on it, taking care to not make any sudden movements.

Once you're within arms reach, you reach out a hand towards it. It jumps back a bit, but you don't react, and just continue holding your hand in place. It slowly reaches out with a single claw, touching it against your palm. It's razor sharp, and you feel a tiny prick from where it touches, but you push the pain from your mind as you focus.

You communicate your desire to be on your way more clearly now, using aura. The response you get is a sharp acceptance, though you spy a few thoughts dancing at the back of the creature's mind. Thoughts of a fierce battle, a dead ally, and a duty to protect. They fade from sight once the creature senses your attention on them, and it quickly breaks off contact soon after.

It leaps to the edge of the cavern, hissing while pointing to the exit. You thank it once more, quickly hurrying outside with your friends. It eyes you closely as you leave, but doesn't pursue you any further.

With that, you find yourselves outside of the entrance to a cave, standing in the Lumiose Badlands. It's rather late in the night, as far as you can tell. You must have been in that cave for much longer than you thought. You're also not quite sure where exactly you are in it, or even which way is north.

You spread out your group a bit, looking out for any potential landmarks. You watch Lisa's Pidgeotto take wing, and her Sentret bobs up on its tail to give it extra height.

Riolu, Froakie, and Bagon are making more of a game of it. You watch them playing on the crags and rocks, having a sort of race. Froakie is well in the lead, leaping nimbly from the top of each spire, clearing the gaps with ease. Riolu isn't far behind, kicking across the lower portions of rocks and using his full body to flip his way from point to point. Bagon is bringing up the rear, and yo uwatch as he scrambles up a spire, vaults forward off of it, and crashes headfirst into the next. Then, after he dislodges himself, he repeats the process. It's a rather strange sight, but interesting to watch.

After a half hour of searching, Lisa eventually calls out that she's found something. She points off in the distance, where a painted flag sags at the top of a wooden post.

"That's a trail marker," she explains, "There are quite a few set up through the desert to lead from the capital to our hometown. The bad news is that we'll need to figure out which way is north before we can continue on."

"Well, lucky for us that my uncle taught me how to navigate by stars," you reply.

You make quick work of determining the direction. You haven't had to use the skill often, but your uncle always insisted that being able to navigate was an important skill.

Soon enough, you've figured out which way is north, and upon telling Lisa, she tells you that she'll be able to follow the trail back to your hometown from here.

You decide to travel now, while it was still cool. Hopefully you could find somewhere to rest during the day tomorrow where it wouldn't get too hot.

You start off at a rather brisk pace, occasionally slowing down so that you can check the surrounding area for any dangerous monsters. There's a general sense of stability here, and while you occasionally spot a creature nearby, most seem content to avoid you.

The cool night air is rather refreshing after your journey through the caves, though you find yourself getting somewhat tired. While you have been up since yesterday morning, you press onward. You need to get as far as possible while you still can.

"Other than that, I guess I'm just a bit tired, we've been up almost an entire day," she continues, though as she speaks, you watch the first rays of dawn creep over the horizon, "Nevermind, we have been up an entire day."

"Is there anything else I should know about the desert?"

"Not really, just keep an eye out for any strange looking sand pits, those are usually antlion traps. The most dangerous thing in this place is the landsharks, though I've got plenty of experience with those. It'll only be a problem if a full grown adult shows up."

"I'm also happy we got out of there with no loss of life. I hate killing anything when it isn't necessary. We also have a new companion so that's a plus," you continue, "I'm just hoping nothing else goes wrong. I only have so much energy for healing."

"Wait, you've been trying to avoid killing things?"

"Yeah, I mean, as much as I can anyway."

"Why didn't you say anything? Now I just feel terrible. I mean, I figured you were going to be fine after that whole thing with the pirates, but then I've just been shooting like when I'm hunting. I mean, I just wasn't even thinking about that but now that you say it and I'm just," she says before pausing, "You must really hate me now, don't you..."

Hate you? *laugh* I could never hate you silly, you just thought you were doing what was right. At worst I was going to talk to you about getting some blunted arrows when deadly force isn't required. Look, *points to Bagon* it's fine no harm done.

"Lisa that's ridiculous, of course I don't hate you. You fought to keep yourself and all of us safe, just because I chose to avoid killing doesn't mean you did anything wrong. If I wasn't strong enough to keep us safe using my choice your choice could have saved any of our lives."

"Lisa that's ridiculous, of course I don't hate you," you reply, extending your arm to start patting her head "I could never hate you silly, you just thought you were doing what was right. You fought to keep yourself and all of us safe, just because I chose to avoid killing doesn't mean you did anything wrong. If I wasn't strong enough to keep us safe using my choice your choice could have saved any of our lives."

"Really?"

"Really. At worst I was going to talk to you about getting some blunted arrows when deadly force isn't required. After all," you say, gesturing to Bagon, "Everything worked out fine."

"He knocked you clear across the room Ceil," she mutters, "Maybe if i had known, then...I'm not sure."

The two of you stand in silence for a minute more, when you realize that you're patting her head again.

"Sorry," you say, pulling back your hand, "I don't know why I keep-"

Before you can finish, Lisa rushes forward and begins hugging you tightly. You smile, and slowly start patting her head again. You think you hear her mumble something, and you're not sure what it was.

And that's where I'm going to call tonight's thread. Thanks for sticking with me. I'll be around for questions and comments, and I'll post a few extra details I just wanted to go over.

Do we hug her back or just keep patting?

The first detail I wanted to bring up was mainly what was covered in the last conversation, so I'll go ahead an skip over that.

The next thing I wanted to say is that I've noticed a lot of the sort of "catch 'em all" mentality that's common in pokemon games. While this is fine, I feel like it's causing a bit of disconnect on everyone's part, since there isn't a real way to 'catch' pokemon in this era of time. Expecting every angry wild animal you come across to drop everything and follow you isn't how this quest is set up. I mainly want to mention this so that nobody feels like I'm favoring certain wild pokemon over others or I'm discrediting choices just to be mean. Sometimes you just can't tame a wild pokemon.

The last thing was just clarification on the Vibrava. Those were in a sort of chrysalis stage between Trapinch and Vibrava. Since pokemon research isn't done heavily, those two pokemon aren't viewed as being linked at all, and there's no knowledge of any sort of metamorphosis between the two forms. Since it was an incomplete transition as well, taking it from its environment would have likely resulted in its death. So again, not trying to stop you guys from getting a Vibrava, because flygon is cool, just explaining why I kind of ignored a few votes there just to save everyone the inevitable heartbreak of it dying.

I hope that all makes sense.

there is no situation that cannot be improved by a head pat
Great thread

Yeah well I figure to get a new pokemon it has to be young impressionable and like us or at least want to follow us for a reason. If we manage to get a team of more than 6 it'd be a huge supply burden anyways. (a good reason for team limit) Great thread thanks

>disappointment
Well crud

>>35824521
Yeah, I understand, I just keep throwing out the catch options because those dragon pokes are some of my favs. Regardless of how you run your quest, I won't hold it against you.
