After training for nearly a decade, you've done it.. You've finally graduated from the church and you're ready to become a Paladin, guardian of the weak, protector of the peace and warrior of god.
You're granted your sword, paladins cloak and helmet and even though it's all much too large for you to carry and wield, you have faith god will show you your way.
You will be a hero amongst men you reassure yourself and leave the church.
Your first mission is to destroy the lich that resides in the castle at the top of the mountains. You're to leave at sunset.

How do you prepare with the five hours you have before you have to go?

You creep to the Ranger's home in the woods. Sneakily you move through the bush but without any signs of shock the ranger suddenly calls out in a weary voice.

"Who's there? If you're trying to rob someone, you're in the wrong place friend!"

You decide to go out.

"Master Ranger, I'm here to-" But before you can continue he turns and begins to shout.

"AH GODS A PALADIN, GET OFF OF MY PROPERTY. YOU GOT NO PLACE BEIN HERE."

"Sir, sir I only came to ask if you wanted to go to the Lich's castle with me!" You fear you will find no help here.

He hesitates, examining you and then looks down with- what? Sadness?

"Ayy, I'll take you up on that offer actually." He sighs and looks darkly at the hundreds of arrows he had been fletching before you had disturbed him. "I was already planning on going.."

You thank him and tell him when you're leaving and he nods and mumbles. "I hate goddamn Paladins.."

"Oh." You say a little put off by the old man's grumpiness. "Sir, what's our plan?"

"You stop talking is the first part of it. Once you do that part I'll tell you the rest."

You sigh and then stop talking and watch him continue to fletch. After five minutes you realize he just wanted to shut you up.

You're able to put a few minor buffs on the arrows, your sword and yourself over the time. Nothing too big though and the Ranger seems unimpressed.
The time has come. The ranger tells you of a secret way you can go but you reassure him you know the path there.

You and the ranger walk down the secret path. He stays behind you as you do. Eventually you come to deep, deep wood...
He says just beyond this clearing there's a tunnel that leads to the Lich's castle.
But he gets less and less visible behind you as you move beyond the clearing.
Suddenly at the center of the clearing there's an ominous chanting and suddenly before you, you see a great shadowy apparition appear.

"PREPARE TO DIE PALADIN" The beast calls and when you look behind you the ranger is gone..

And from the corner of your eye you see an arrow strike it. You look up and see the old man beside a tree a few yards away shooting a torrent of arrows.

You watch as your paladin powers destroy the demon with glee. You're finally being the symbol of holy justice, like you've always wanted to be. The giant ghost starts to erupt into nothing but smoke and you're overjoyed.

A great odd chanting comes again and the face in the smoke vanishes and the darkness is all that's left.

You move on. The ranger gives you a silent nod and he moves with you somewhere in the darkness of the woods. You come to the cave or dungeon entrance. Whatever it is, there's a silhouette of someone standing in the entrance.

He nods making it apparent this is the true path. You look at the figure and then gesture for the ranger to shoot an arrow. It flies to the door and falls as if it hit a barrier before it hits the figure.

You go to tell him to shoot another when the figure descends into the gloomy entrance and out of sight.

You enter the dungeon... You realize as well that you're about at half health, you've got three healing spells that will fully heal something a day. Do you want to use one.

Your three healing spells, heal nearly any injury and all hp. You push on and come across a great clearing.
In the great beyond you see a small and dim essence. The room suddenly turns from a pitch black cave to a brightly lit ruin of a room!
You look up in horror to see a similar apparition 15 times the size of the previous one!
Behind you, you see Sir flee into the earlier stages of the dungeon but you..
You are the symbol of god and his strength. The Judge Jury and Executioner of the holy and all that is just.
You draw your blade.
But this will surely be the greatest foe you've ever heard of.

You go to cast Turn undead but as you do purple jets of energy charge at you, except they're not coming from the apparition. They come from the opposite side of the room. One hits your hand but they're all so minor they do no damage, only delay you.

"DO NOT TEST ME PALADIN. BEGONE OR DIE" A shattering voice calls.

You start to walk past the ghostly giant and it begins to shout even louder.
"STAND BACK PALADIN!!"
The voice ricochets off the walls and fills the entire room. When past it, it actually erupts into prismatic lights but as they hit you they phase through you...
An illusion.
You find your way to the opposite side and find nothing but a small room dug into one of the walls.

You take a closer look and notice several moaning and sloth like body shapes in the dark.

You call sir over and he rushes past the flutter of lights in the center of the room. He immediately pushes you and your sword aside and enters the room. As your eyes adjust from the bright lights you notice, horrified that the things you may have just attacked were actually the abducted girls.
He begins tending to them immediately.
There are blood stains on the walls and the women look like they've seen hell...

The Lich has to die.

You begin to tear apart your cloak for the women. There's just enough so they each have a bit of coverage.
Sir and you guide them through the empty dungeon and when you get outside finally you see a great view of the valley.

The town is on fire below. Screams and cries come from below.

You're horrified

"I'm cold" The youngest says.

On one hand there are civilians that need help down there but on the other, it's dangerous in the forest. Even if you were with the women, could you protect them if you came across another apparition?

You go to protect the civilians, taking the women with you and keeping them close. The forest is dark and smells like rot. Your steps crunch over branches and large sticks, this is definitely not the way you came. The girls move slowly through the thick, thick wood. You're helping the oldest girl across a giant overturned tree when you hear a loud snapping stick ahead of you and a sudden growling.
You look sharply and see a wolf with a big orange stripe down its back.
You draw your sword and try and get in front of the girls as best you can.

"If I fall you girls run, okay?" But inside you know that if you fall, these girls won't last much longer.
