“Please, sit.” The captain gestures lazily to the chair while staring out the window toward the town.

You comply.

He remains staring out the window for a few moments longer before finally turning around and taking a seat himself. Light pours in from the window behind him making the shadows on his body that much darker and thicker.

“I’ll make this brief.” He starts “What would compel a brand new recruit to risk death and kill something as dangerous as a sporeling matriarch?”

He stares at you as if sizing you up.

Not sure if his question was rhetorical or not, you finally answer. “It was injured and we couldn’t leave something so dangerous free to attack someone else. Besides…” You pause “it wasn’t me that actually did the killing. If Sarah wasn’t there, it would still be lurking in that marsh.”

“Hmm, ‘we couldn’t leave something so dangerous free to attack someone else?’” The captain chuckles slightly and then sighs.

The sigh is heavy and so is the silence. You stare at each other. You see the captain’s facial wrinkles and scars which seem to be accentuated by the shadows. His short brown hair shows a grey tinge. He has seen quite a few battles. You wonder briefly about what he thinks he sees.

He starts again suddenly. “Peace… no matter how short lived costs a price. You must work hard to protect that which is precious to you; even if that means getting your hands dirty.”

He stops, rises out of his chair and returns to the window.

“I’m sure you aware by now that I have more business dealings than just this guild chapter. At this point I can’t even afford to be subtle anymore.”

He looks at a pocket watch.

“The carefully maintained lie we live will come to an end eventually. Whether it’s soon or not is the only say we have in the matter.”

You continue to listen, uncomfortable and confused.

“I know well of your past and what you’ve been through. That is why I will ask you once and only once. Can you commit horrible acts if it meant protecting what you call home and those you care about? Will you work with me to keep this fleeting peace if it meant having memories that will haunt you for the rest of your life? I cannot tell you what it is that I do if you don’t agree to help me, lest you decide to try and stop me. So, what is your answer?

You sit, stupefied by the situation. What does he mean about fleeting peace? Just what is threatening the village? Just what horrible things does this man do?

Your answer

>Understood. I will help.
>No, I cannot help you not knowing if it possibly means hurting other people.
>I-I don’t know, I’m just so confused. I need more time to think.

Your mind goes blank for a few moments as you search for your answer. “What could this man possibly be doing? How could I be of any help?” Questions race through you mind as you search for a solution. Your face is hot and you feel a slight headache. You rub your eyes in your palms as you try to still your mind.

You calm down.

“No, I cannot help you not knowing if it possibly means hurting people. That is not who I am. That is not who I want to be.”

You say this aloud affirm your stance on the matter, whether it’s to yourself or the captain, you’re not sure.

The captain snaps his pocket watch closed.

“I should have thought as much.” The captain leans his head against the window. “Perhaps, I would do the same if I had the choice. To be free of the burden and enjoy the peace, no matter how short-lived.”

He pauses.

“Thank you for your time, Alena. You’re dismissed”

You get up quickly, glad to leave his office.

“One last thing.” His voice jolts you. You don’t turn to face him. “Don’t mention this to the others, I haven’t said anything to most of them.”

“Understood.” You close the door softly behind you.

“Mmmmm, that was quite the delicious lunch. Glen is quite the gentleman for covering the bill, don’t you think Alena?”

Glen lets out a short puff of air through his teeth.

“Yes, and quite the lucky one to be strolling through the village with two beautiful women.” You jab at Glen’s side with your elbow.

“Where should we head next?” Sarah excitedly asks

“I don’t know this village very well yet, but I do have some coin that’s burning a hole in my pocket.” You tap the pouch through your pocket.

“Me too!” Sarah giggles

Glen looks down sullenly.

“Oh come now, Glen. Cheer up.” Sarah says as she takes his arm in hers.

You see Glen turn red slightly and it looks as if he’s suppressing a grin.

You look at him and raise an expressive eyebrow.

“How about the blacksmith workshops? We can see if we find any new gear we like.” Glen suggests still blushing.

“Oh, good idea! Maybe we can find someone that can craft a weapon with our new fangs, Alena?” Sarah pulls out the 5 inch black Matriarch fang out of her cloak and observes it.” The point is quite sharp and the whole body is extremely sturdy. It would make for a great spear point.” She says as she stabs the air in front of her with it.

You arrive at the smoggy and dusty side of the village where the blacksmiths set up shop.

“Where to? Most of them close up early so we should pick the one we want more.” Glen says

>Look at the for sale weapons and armor display, as a group

>Find a craftsman that can work the fangs, as a group

“I have an idea.” You chime up. “My gear is a little more worn out than the two of yours, so I’ll head over there to have a look. The two of take both fangs and see what you can get out of them.”

“I’m low on funds so I have no objections to that.” Glen quickly replies

“I don’t know. Alena doesn’t know her way around very well and she isn’t used to haggling with this village’s blacksmiths.” Sarah expresses her concern

“You don’t have to worry about me. I can see the stands from here so I won’t venture too far from there. Also, in case you forgot, I went to the academy in Myndras they had markets there the size of this whole village.” You put your hands on your hips haughtily to make Sarah forget her concern.

“Okay.” She smiles. “I see why Glen calls you Miss Honors.”

Glen laughs. You pout. They begin to leave.

“We’ll meet back here after.” Glen calls out to you.

“Okay!” You wave.
You didn’t lie about the markets in Myndras. You just neglected to mention the fact that you never had enough money to do more than window shopping.

You don’t let that stop you as you begin perusing through all that the village has to offer. Anvils clang and steam rises from all sides. You see swords almost the size of you, armor that looks like you’d get lost in, and an assortment of ranged weapons that put a bad taste in your mouth.

“Can I interest you in one of my many expertly crafted items, Miss?” A bearded burly blacksmith calls out to you as you pass by.

You eye up his stand, he appears to have one of the bigger ones. “Do you have short swords or perhaps armor that can be adjusted to fit me?” you inquire.

“Short swords, aplenty, my cute friend.” He eyes your whole body for a few seconds “Perhaps it’d be better if we took your measurements and crafted you a new set of armor, my dear?

Not wanting to admit that you can’t afford a new set of armor, “No, I’m afraid I simply do not have the time to have measurements done today. Perhaps I should browse someone else’s stand for a better selection.” You begin to walk away.

“Wait, wait, wait, Miss.” The blacksmith calls out to you again.

You grin briefly and turn around.

“I may have something in your size. One moment please.”
He says as he runs to his workshop. A few seconds later he returns out of breath. “H-here we are.”

He places a small set of reinforced leather armor similar to yours in front of you. Although, the difference in quality is quite noticeable.

“Originally crafted for a merchant’s young son. He never picked it up, died from raiders! Anyway, notice the soft supple leather and the fur inside, a luxury suitable for your beauty, Miss.” He winks. “But that’s not the main thing. Only high quality, high purity steel used, guaranteed to stop a lethal blow from any weapon if hit, or your money back.” He continues hardly taking a breath, “The flexible joints are perfectly suited for nimble fighters, you’d swear that there was nothing there.”

“Wow!.” You let out accidently.

“It can be yours for 45 silver coins. What do you say?” He smiles satisfied with his pitch (Current Silver Coins:25)

“45 coins? Maybe if it were brand new. I believe you said something about the boy that was supposed to get this armor dying? I really hope he wasn’t wearing one of your armors while it happened.”

You stare directly at the blacksmith’s eyes.
“And even if he wasn’t, it would be terrible for business if a rumor broke out that your armors couldn’t even protect a young helpless boy from dying...

You see anger in the blacksmith’s eyes but you aren’t done quite yet.
“Plus it’s unlikely this armor would be an absolute comfortable fit for me, you can take out the fur and keep it. I can wear it better that way without any chafing on my chest. Lower your price to 20 coins, you’d be lucky to find someone else that would be willing to buy such a small armor in your lifetime.

By this point the blacksmith is fuming.

“25 coins. Nothing less.” He finally edges out.

You sense that he means what he says

“25 coins, you’re too kind. How much would you give me for my armor?” You ask in your best demure voice.

The blacksmith huffs. He looks at your armor while scratching his beard. He doesn’t look very impressed.

“9 coins. I would have to take it apart and smelt it to make any money. Since I would be lucky to find someone else that would be willing to buy such a small armor.” He says sarcastically.

“Sold!” You yell cheerfully, attracting attention. “Would you be kind enough to undo my armor and help me into the new one?” you say loud enough so others around you can hear.

You know he wants to refuse, but he begrudgingly accepts to maintain his image. He tries to take his revenge by tightening the straps of your new armor as far as they can go, but this only serves to make the armor fit quite well. He takes your old armor and 16 coins and whispers to you to never come back to his store.

You leave gleefully with your new armor. He forgot to take out the fur, but you’re not going to mention anything about that.

“I’m beginning to like this peaceful little village” the happy though passes through your head as a more shadowy one follows.

“Alena!”

You turn to see a winded Glen.

He catches his breath “Sarah sent me to get you. We found a craftsman who can work with the fangs.”

“That’s great. Shall we get going?” you reply.

“That’s not all. He said he can either craft two daggers with the fangs or 1 spear. He said that’s how the fangs are used.”
Glen said glumly and continued
“He wanted 7 coins for each dagger or 30 for the spear.”
He pauses.

“When he showed Sarah an already crafted spear, I’ve never seen such a look of awe in her eyes before. She didn’t say, but I could tell, she wants it immensely. But she’s 10 coins short and she doesn’t want to use your fang for herself.”

You gulp at the thought

“The daggers are nothing at all to scoff at though. Someone with your fighting style could probably use it with great results. I would love one for myself, just telling you the truth. But, I would get this for Sarah.” He looks at his feet for a second and then back into your eyes. He grabs your shoulders. “I would completely understand if you don’t want to, but I will still ask. “Please, will you give up your dagger?"

You sigh. “You totally owe me for this Glen. I mean it” you jab his shoulder with your finger.

“Absolutely. I’ll buy you lunch for a week after the next mission, whatever you want.” Glen bows his head, his blonde hair falling onto his forehead.

“Maybe I’ll invite Sarah and Valerie to come with us too.” you place a finger on your cheek and look up in thought.

Glen turns his bowed head to the side and winces as if in pain. “Okay.” He finally lets out.

“What are you waiting for then? Lead the way.” You jab Glen’s shoulder again.

He looks up and smiles. “Right this way, Miss Honors. Oh, nice armor by the way. It suits you.” Glen starts into a light trot.

“Oh, and not a word of this to Sarah. She told me not to mention anything about the spear to you.” Glen adds quickly.

You get to workshop a few minutes later. You see Sarah sitting patiently in front of the workshop kicking her feet in the air.

“We’re back.” Glen calls out

“Alena!” Sarah gets up. “The craftsman said he could craft us a pair of daggers. We’ll have some matching gear to go on mission with!” Sarah says excitedly.

“Oh, that’s great!” you smile. “Where is the craftsman? I want to ask him a few questions.”

“He said he was busy, and to only call him if we decided what we wanted.” She says a little quickly

“I see. So how much would this set us back?” You ask trying to find anyway to lead to the spear without implicating Glen’s involvement.

“Only 7 coins! He originally wanted 12 but Glen went on a tirade saying stuff like ‘Do you realize this is the girl that killed the beast and freed up the trade route?’” She said in her best Glen impression. She laughed and continued the impression “’ 40 is absolutely ridiculous, this girl is likely to save the village again!’” She giggles.

You find your opening. “40? What exactly did he want 40 coins for?”

Sarah stops giggling and stares like a deer caught in torchlight.

“Ummm, not much.” Sarah mumbled, obviously not used to lying.

“You said something about crafting a spear earlier, right? Did he want 40 for a spear?” you press

Sarah pauses for a long time, she stares at her boots and eventually lets out a “Yes…But he wanted to use both fangs, and I asked him if he could use one and he told me that it always takes both fangs.” hurriedly

“If he wants both fangs what’s the problem? I’m absolutely okay with you using my fang in combat.” You try to convince her

“No, but you earned that fang and it’s really valuable. I can’t just take it” Sarah insists

Glen sighs, you sigh

If she’s going to take the fang she’s going to need a good reason

The three of you are quiet.

“Besides, I’ll be counting on you the next time Jin goofs off and almost gets me killed.” You say trying to lighten the mood.

Sarah giggles. “Okay, Alena. I understand. I’ll make you proud. Thank you.” She smiles brilliantly.

“Where’s my thanks? I’ll be putting up the 10 coins to cover the cost” Glen interjects.

“You don’t get a thanks. You owe from that night you accidently killed that farmers pig because you thought it was that wildcat we were searching for. I had to put up the coin because you had forgotten yours, remember?”

“But I paid you back with that pair of boots I got you.” Glen exclaims

“That was just a gift.” Sarah remarks.

The three of you laugh and enter the workshop.

A week later and you find yourself settling in quite well. A few minor missions and some practicing has allowed to use the dodge and counter technique in combat. The captain promoted you from your recruit status after the last mission, you’re now a full-fledged mercenary in Blue Dawn. He has spoken to you in private since the day of his proposition. Sarah’s spear was finished a few days after you gave up the fangs and coins, she wields it like it was a part of her body. On this day you find yourself being briefed by your captain. He is in a more serious mood than usual

“There are two missions this time.”

He paces in front of you, Jin, Glen, and Sarah.

“Let me stress that they are both of high importance.”

He stops

“Firstly, Bart and Eric have yet to return from their mission escorting the trade caravan to the north. They were expected to come back at the absolute latest 2 days ago. I’m going to send two of you to follow the trade route and investigate what happened.”

He continues pacing again.

“The other thing…” he pauses “Is that village scouts report there has been a miasma cloud build-up 4 miles west of here. Four travelers went missing near its vicinity. The village has requested that we send a few of our men to help investigate what exactly is going on. It’s a high risk mission so I will be sending the two of you with the highest miasma endurance scores. That you would be you Alena and…
