Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you negotiated with a spirit, traded a dragon's heart for power, and woke up with a headache.

You raise an eyebrow at the Varistha's words. “Why do you act as if today is your last? I see no reason for this task to kill you. Considering how powerful you are, I would think something as simple as killing horrible monsters from another dimension would be a pleasant stroll through the gardens for you.”

The Varistha smirks, his tone amused when he speaks. “You've clearly never fought creatures from that hellish void before, Mikhael. Magic-” He pauses, running his fingers absentmindedly through his beard while he thinks. “It would be incorrect to say magic doesn't affect void creatures. Rather, magic affects them differently than it does you or I. Hurling a ball of flame into one of the six gaping maws of a three headed monstrosity won't do much of anything. It would more than likely strengthen the creature instead of weakening it. You'd be better served impaling it on a pillar of stone or stabbing it in its multifaceted eyes with shards of ice.”

The Varistha waves a hand dismissively. “What I'm trying to say is, void creatures are only truly harmed by physical means. Things like... oh, Earth magic's ability to weaken and erode objects, or Water magic's ability to freeze to blood in one's veins don't do much of anything to creatures. Nor do any effects, at least any effects I know of.”

You still don't really see how that could be much of a problem for the Varistha. If he's as powerful as he claims to be, being 'limited' to stabbing things with ice, stone, and metal spikes is hardly a limit at all. That's how you've battled most of your opponents anyway. “I still don't see why that would mean your death. I don't even see that a particular difficult limitation to work around, if I'm being honest.”

The Varistha shakes his head. “Well, it's not as if stabbing them once or twice, or thirty seven times is enough to kill a creature of the void. Their bodies are rarely fully corporeal, as ours are. They can change their forms at will and usually heal at an astonishing rate. The only way to truly kill one is to rip its heart, its 'Core' out of... well, wherever it lies. Each creature is different, you understand.”

You narrow your eyes at the Varistha suspiciously. “How do you know all this? You speak as if you've got a lot of experience battling these creatures.”

The Varistha shrugs nonchalantly. “When you live as long as I have, Mikhael, you come to learn things about the reality we'll inhabit for the majority of our existence.” The majority of our existence? Only the majority? “Shapeshifting, semicorporeal, unkillable monstrosities from beyond time are far from the strangest beast I've come across. However, I think battling a few dozen at once ought to be enough to finally put an end to me. Besides, the price grows higher and higher to maintain my sanity. Now is as good a time as any to pass into Pani's embrace.”

Today might be a good day to die, but tomorrow might be even better. Why not take a little help and find out?
>>
>>35756302
What was the chineses cartoon that distracted you, Soma?
anyway
I kind of want to go with him because experience, loot, adventure, but I don't want to do it because death, pain, void beasts.
Are you here, Diarca-senpai?
>>
>>35756302
I actually forgot how non-threatening the Varistha looked.

Also, if he's that bad, why doesn't he just go with us to find the machine that's supposed to clear our mind? We could both use it, and having a demigod help us reach it can only be a good thing!
>>
So, enchantment ideas?

I want a warm container that is bigger on the inside for the egg but we don't exactly have necessary runes for that.
>>

>Insist on accompanying the Varistha to close the portal to the void, despite the personal risk to yourself.
I want to see the death of a god.

Don't be a fucking pleb, Soma. This is the sort of pleb that doesn't even read Nihei's other stuff, Mizukami Satoshi's works, or Dorohedoro.

May as well commit.
Also ask about the haician sabre/ring/armor. pull all that shit out and tell him to give us some knowledge about fighting them.
>>

>>Thank the Varistha and see him off, then retrieve the gift he's left for you in the gardens. This seems a bit beyond your ken.
We have done enough. Time to get our shit, hopefully not get arsed to deal with the whole kill the shah thing or at least get it over with without trouble, and get water grandmastery.

We can make a container with warmth easily enough. The problem is making it a container that will make it easy to move the egg (bigger on the inside and lighter than it actually is). Still, when we have time we should at least make a simple warm container for the kid. It is as good a place as any to start enchanting and it is actually something practical.

They do realize half the tower is rubble and the other half is being guarded by void monsters. That they have no chance in hell of ever killing. What are we at 32 vys max? Var has like 1000 and he thinks a dozen will kill him.
>>
>>35756753

It could work out pretty well. We'll see some crazy shit, probably learn from it, get some loot, and hopefully save a demigod's life. Assuming he lives we could have an easy path to sanity.

That said I would rather just spend some time meditating and shit, but we never seem to have any down time any more.

I don't get it either. I don't even get why we are being given this option. Varistha is more powerful than we could imagine and he thinks he'll die while getting rid of these creatures. Comparing powers and skills, Mik should be very lucky if he can take out one or two of them.

You open your mouth to speak, but the Varistha cuts you off before you're able. “You can't come with me, Mikhael. You're a child, yet to enter your third decade of life. It would weigh heavily on my conscience should you die in some foolish attempt to aid me in this endeavor. I go alone, and I don't come back.”

You draw yourself up to your full height, pointing a finger accusingly at the Varistha. “I'll have you know I'm hardly a defenseless babe! I'm very nearly a Grandmaster, I've explored a dimension not our own, I've made deals for power and knowledge with long forgotten spirits, and an Entity seeking to mimic the gods themselves dwells inside my mind! If I'm a child, I'm the strangest child ever born into this Earth!”

The Varistha grins, spreading his hands out in a pleading gesture. “See reason, Mikhael. I'm a Grandmaster five times over. I've spent twelve centuries accumulating knowledge and power. I've dealt extensively with all manner of spirits, acted as a mediator in conflicts most men will never even know exist. I was alive to see the ancient ruins that dot the landscape built. I believe I will meet my death on that forsaken rock in the Anthosian Sea. You're simply not ready to face a conflict on this scale and I will not-” He emphasizes the word strongly, putting force behind it. “-allow you to throw your life away on this task. That's the end of this discussion. I'll allow you to come with me as far as the docks, but from there I will go on my own.”

He turns sharply and strides away, putting an effective end to the conversation. Darzi sighs in obvious relief behind you. You whip around to shoot her a glare before stomping off after the Varistha. “Is there anything I can say to change your mind? Anything at all!”

The Varistha shrugs, the door swinging open in front of him as he strides towards it. “Not a thing, I'm afraid. My mind is made up Mikhael.” As the five of you, your companions having followed you out of the chamber, make your way through the narrow, winding corridor the torches that illuminated the narrow crevice wink out in your wake, plunging the hall into darkness behind you.

Like our sword. Soldiers add tweaks to weapons that make them more effecient or "better"
with 1000 years of experience.
And coutnless battles with that armor. He is better than a manual. And likely knows a tweak or two. like mixing certain parts together get an awesome effect that doesn't usually happen.
Considering there are 14 if i remember correctly effects that the armor has. theres alot of potential for it.

You grumble under your breath. You can't believe the Varistha would be so dismissive! He's running off to get himself killed and he refuses any sort of aid. Even if you've only known him for a short time, the Varistha seems a good man and he seems to lead a good life. Why he'd be so eager to essentially kill himself you can't comprehend.

As you progress through the narrow corridors you slip a hand into your cloak, withdrawing the vial of spice. It glitters blue in the torch light, and for just the barest instant you're tempted to press the vial to your lips and breathe in deeply. However, the urge passes quickly enough and you hold up the vial for the Varistha to see the powdery substance roiling within the glass container. “At least let me offer you this. It's a vial of Spice I bought from a wandering merchant.”

The Varistha pauses, turning to look from you to the vial. You see a spark of interest in his eye, curiosity. Perhaps even desire? “A wandering merchant? You mean that bastard Sadik?” He holds out a hand and you press the vial into his palm. He holds it up to the flame of a torch and watches as the substance inside begins to leap and swirl through the vial with surprising violence, the sound of the powder slamming against the glass container ringing through the narrow crevice you're currently navigating.

The Varistha shakes his head. “Genuine Spice. It's been a long time since I've had a dose.” He brings it away from the flame and the powder inside quickly slows to its original, languid pace. “You know, you'll eventually lose the blue stain in your eyes should you stay away from the stuff long enough. I did, at least.” He slips it into a pocket on his robe, nodding. “Thank you, Mikhael. It will serve well as a last resort, should I need it.”

(1/3 or 4)
>>
The journey passes in silence until you finally reach the crossroads, one path leading to the gardens and the other to the temple fortress, and in turn the village. The Varistha, much to your surprise, turns towards the gardens. You follow behind behind him. “Are you not headed for the docks?”

You think the Varistha shakes his head, but you're not sure. With the torches extinguished you've been plunged once more into darkness, forced to keep a hand against the wall to navigate. “No, first I will retrieve my armor from my quarters. My weapons as well. Then I will make my way to the docks. If I am going to face my end, I wish to face it as the warrior I once was.”

You suppose you can understand that. You can't help but wonder if, someday, you'll be lecturing some young Vatis as you march off to your own death. To be frank, you doubt you'll ever manage to live as long as the Varistha has. “About that armor, just what is it that makes it so powerful? Why have you relied on it all these years? I mean, my own set's properties are astonishingly useful, but I would've thought that twelve centuries of life would allow you the opportunity to find something better.”

The Varistha's response is cautious. “I wouldn't feel it proper to discuss some of the armor's properties in present company, but among the literature I've left you are my memoirs, my journals, and my notes. You'll find a list of all the various uses the armor has among my notes. It's an extremely versatile piece of equipment, though for the less experienced it can be dangerous to use. That feeling of weakness you've mentioned to me after removing the spike from your neck? It's and indicator that you're reserves are not trained well enough to handle the armor's effects, but they're trained well enough that the armor does not immediately incapacitate you. Continue growing your reserves and eventually you'll no longer feel weakened after use, though there are other negative effects as well.”
(2/3 or 4)
>>
>>35758708
I'm starting to think that picture is supposed to be some kind of airship.
>>
The Varistha waves a hand dismissively. “As I said, you'll find it all in my notes.”

A thought occurs to you as the entrance to the gardens appears ahead of you. “Say, who will replace you as Varistha? I must admit, I'm not particularly familiar with the chain of command within a monastery.”

The Varistha pauses to consider for a moment. “I would like to say Siksaka Herbad, but I believe he passed on to be with the Empress... oh, it must have been a decade ago.” He sighs, shaking his head briefly. “The current Siksaka is a woman by the name of Riya. I doubt you've met her, she's been in El-Amin to serve with the Amatya.” Amatya, you recognize, is the term used to refer to the High Priest of Pani, it means roughly 'Minister', referring to the Amatya's roll as an advisor and priest to the Shah and his household.

You emerge into the gardens and conversation is cut off. There are few monks lounging by the pond or wandering the gardens at this hour, most ought to be seeing to their chores, but there are several who are likely either off duty today or taking a break from their labors. They either boy to the Varistha or give the traditional sign of respect, touching their fore and middle fingers to their forehead and then their chest.

You do realise meditating on VYS makes EVERYTHING more effective. and is not situational.
Study body, something we've been meaning to do. When we learned of the applications. Would mean we heal more efficiently. Making something that may cost us a shit ton of vys. Like repairing a maimed arm in the middle of battle available and not taking up the whole of our vys.
Also Mik would know where the vital points of all humanly entities. Making us that much more effective with any magic/weapon.

I personally want slow/speed. slow being the more usefull one in my opinion. But the first two are high on being important don't try to undermine them.

Do you have any idea how hard it would be to get an insight on VYS? It's a step towards a Lost Meta. It'd be easier to get Nature GM from scratch.

And you're playing up the studying of the human body. It won;t help us all that much, might reduce the cost of some healing, but it has few combat applications especially since we're moving away from water for combat.

Not to mention that we need fresh bodies for that. Fresh. You have any kind of idea the shitfit our companions would throw over that?

I'd rather hit Master Fire. Then start working on Metal. Then maybe GM water Via the Blood Battles method. Then start cranking our our effects/Metas and techniques.

I didn't find the quickest way to Gm that doesn't involve hydras to do it with fucking puppetshows. That'd take weeks, anyway, and I don't know if the meditation has to be continuous.
>>
>>35759752
>Soma confirmed that one anon was on track for rediscovering vys
On track too, It's still a massive undertaking that would require weeks and weeks of meditation and study.
>>
>>35759801
According to thyself who has a bias against attempting it.
>>
>>35759784
You do know that the self immolation will seriously harm our sanity, take several weeks, and only helps our healing and not our water control.
>>

Soma confirmed that it'd be a valid method of grandmastering water while also laying out a reminder that many vatis die in the process of trying to acquire GM. Also how our master would laugh that we set ourselves on fire to attain water grandmastery. It's probably a bad idea.
>>
>>35759838
So you think recreating a lost meta is going to be a simple undertaking that we could just pop off in a couple of days? Recreating something that GMs have studied and tried to recreate since the fall? Something that can be considered on par with permanency?
>>
>>35759801
srsly get your head out of your ass.
where are you pulling this from?
We already know what vys can do.
And some possibilities. In character. So Mik has some idea of it. He knows what it can do.
So I am sure it wouldn't be to crazy.
We also have a book on making meta's easier to master so once we read that we will get bonuses toward learning meta's and I assume a big bonus on normal effects.
>>
>>35759837
>several week
It would take one week, the whole point is it's the quickest way we know. The other I'd be fine with is the flashfreeze/regen/repeat thing where we're a shifting mass of frostbite for days or weeks.
>>
>>35759906
Yea, he also confirmed that the Blood battle idea would work too, not saying it wouldn't work or be funny. Just saying that i think it's a better option.
>>
>>35759924
Do you want our Water control to be shit?
>>
>>35759906
Soma said doing it in a place where we're surrounded by good water vatis (hinthint, the temple) would severely decrease the risk of death, though I admit it may not be good for our sanity, I think we need GM for the desert asap, and maybe we can get the spirit to help with insanity, since even though we bartered for a valiant death the Varistha survived(if he does)
>>
This method has Healing in it via the sheer amount of blood we have to regenerate.

It has Water control obviously and works both on our multitasking and our precise control.

Lastly it provides the added bonus of giving us some seriously valuable combat experience just by how many and how diverse of fights he will be pulling off while meditating.

Soma said that creating the figures would take a couple of days. After that I imagine that the tournament wouldn’t take longer than 2-3 weeks if we kept the brackets constantly running.

Also minimal risk as the only danger we put our self in is in the creation phase and it’s pretty minor.

Soma confirmed it would work. I believe it is the most balanced, most beneficial, least risky, and one of the faster ways.

As a last little side note. If we happen to be near a city when we do this we can make it into games. Have the first couple days be free admissions due to the sheer amount of fights. But as it starts to narrow down we will start charging people for admission. Would be great entertainment.
>>
>>35759947
>>35759924
I honestly think we should get to expert in metal before we try getting to GM water.
And get slow.
Slow + mental barrier. should atleast decrease the huge amount of crazy we may be getting for either option.
>>
>>35759973
Do you think you can cheat the system and get high level healing and water control at the same time?
Soma confirmed our water control would be at base water GM levels, but our healing would be SS++ or something. Since we aren't a GM of anything yet, we don't know hwo the bonuses and maluses actually work, maybe they're so specific that we'd get a "you heal burns very well", maybe it's a "you heal everything very well", we just don't know.
>>
>>35759999
A little copy paste form the Blood figurine method.
>>
>>35760027
I'm fine with that, metal and some Nature, as well as getting Fire Master before water GM is A-okay with me.
>>
>>35760027
Same

>>35760030
I think that some ways of obtaining GM will result in a better overall GM. Certain will give more bonuses than others.

Like instead of 10 points in healing and 0 in Water control we have 7 in each.
>>
>>35759999
Nice digits, but I'm not sure if it's worth it to go through all that, I think even flashfreeze would be better, don't need to make a big fuss of it, and still helps with both healing and something to do with water control.
>>
>>35760030
Prettys ure it's not just a set pick one or the other. There;s a reason he encouraged us to be creative with GM meditations.
>>
>>35760094
Why not?

We'd also gain Some great combat experience.

Plus we have used Ice figurines many many times.

It also helps our Siege Games.
>>
>>35760094
But we also might make huge coin from it as our game becomes popular!

We can also use it to spend some time on our friend's POV stories if Soma is into that. Might be a nice break.
>>
>>35760122
If we're being creative
>suspend ourselves in some complicated way with ice/water
>create icicles above us
>shoot it through our body, heal
>repeat, try and see what effects the location of the pierce has
heal+control+anatomy?
>>
Yo ebola is air borne now.
>>
>>35760153
We could use the hole thing as an advertisement for Siege.
>>
>>35760194
I wonder if we can have airborne poison?
>>
>>35760177
That would take years Anon. Years.
>>
>>35760222
We don't know that, anon, we could make some elaborate clockwork around us and keep it going, or make incredibly precise cuts/pierces and experiment with different types of ice (Soma confirmed we can do that).
>>
>>35760194
Meh
>>
>>35760216
We could use Water and/or Manipulate to make a diffuse cloud of the poison either suspended in air or in within water, then somehow get them to inhale?
>>

that likely wouldn't give us GM.
and sounds like a sure as shit way to die.

I'm more interested in http://ask.fm/Quidam_Asinus/answer/118878458171 and its implications. logically, airborne poison could be fire(gases)+poison+slow or something, I guess, probably need water or create too.
>>

So exactly which plan is this making blood/water golems? and fighting with them?

>>

Blood fortress with enchantments? Once we get decent in enchanting of course.
>>
>>35760309
>Here’s a Grandmaster idea.
First we drain our blood and replenish ourselves over and over again while using the drained blood to freeze into ice figures. Each figure will be different. Some will be smaller and faster, others larger and sturdier, they will all have different weapon and weapon combos. Each one will be unique. We create as many of these as we reasonably can, I’m guessing 3000-5000 as Soma said that it would require thousands. Then we have them fight each other in a bracketed tournament. It will take serious control and thinking to actually have that many in depth fights going on while still maintaining them frozen. As the tournament progresses the massive amounts of control we have been using will get further and further refined and the fights more and more intense and interactive between the frozen blood figures.
>>
>>35760321
I don't think it'd take much longer than bloodfigurinebattles
>>
>>35760309

the +12 was game changing. And instead of fighting each other we could fight the countless fishmen in the lake and then try and take on the HUGE whale of a fish.
At least we know there there would be no struggle
with replenishing liquid, and no struggle to keep up with VYS required.

even if it is.. thats MILES above the elevator. that then goes miles down. and across to where the dragons could be.
Point being very worth it. Considering the whole party could get 2-3 insights in a day almost guaranteed. Also worth looking into VYS control.
Changing a 30-35 dice requirment into 18-23 makes for quite the impact.

Let's take the meditation aid before the GM meditation
>>

Eh, not sure about that, I'd rather get GM naturally, it's kind of a special man-changing event, very personal and stuff.

Let's get SK to make an improvised IV drip so we can just drip it in slowly over time. Alternatively if that's not possible use the enema method of absorbing fluids.

The silence seems to stretch on as you make your way out of the garden and into the hallway. You decide to strike up a conversation about a decidedly more lighthearted topic than the Varistha's impending death. After all, he's a thousand years old. Over a thousand years old. Perhaps the oldest man in existence. If he really does die in the coming battle, that would make this the last chance anyone will ever have to pick his brain. “Do you happen to know anything about dragons?”

The Varistha glances over his should at you before continuing on his path. “Besides the fact you're carting around the egg of one? Not particularly. There was a museum, long ago, in the capital of Hiacia. Before it was wiped out of existence by the Entity's creation, you understand. It housed the remains of some ancient beast claimed to be those of a dragon, and some old, partial shells that were believed to be its eggs. There was much debate as to whether or not it was actually the skeleton of a dragon or perhaps merely the remains of some other ancient lizard. Whatever it was, it must've been a massive creature. It towered thirty feet high, and its wingspan spread across the entirety of the vaulted dome they housed it in. An impressive sight to behold.”

The Varistha sighs wistfully recalling the scene. “Let's see... in my youth, there was a popular children's tale known as the Dragon's Bride. It's been forgotten to time, lost with the Empire. As the name might suggest, it told the story of a virtuous Elven maiden, a foreign concept these days-”

You hear Profectus' voice filter through the connection the brooches afford you. {Too virtuous to sleep with a paying customer just because he has a stone arm. I'm still upset about that, my gold is just as good as anyone's.}

We can also put on the haician suit of armor.
But we're ranking up in fire.
getting 2 ranks in metal.
And possibly a meta or two. Should lessen the dangers acompanied with the armor.
And considering we've gone through it. Should be easier this time around. Just have darzi clean us up a bit.

“-who caught the eye of a powerful dragon. This dragon ruled its land with an iron fist, taking what he pleased and destroying anyone who stood in his way. The dragon, using ancient magics long forgotten, shifted its form into that of a man and came to the maid, feigning an interest in marriage so that he might make her his.”

“This is an awfully raunchy children's story.” Darzi comments from behind you. You can't help but agree. Children's stories these days are usually about cute fuzzy animals outwitting desert predators, or some other such nonsense. The Varistha merely shrugs. “Well, back then society was a tad more brutal than it was today. A man was still expected to fight for his bride's hand during the wedding ceremony and Vatis were still castrated to avoid the vile tyranny a magically powerful Emperor would surely cause.” The tone of ridicule tells you the Varistha clearly didn't agree with this stance, though you doubt he's an objective commentator.

The Varistha waves a hand dismissively and carries on with the walk towards his quarters. You've passed the meditation chamber, and are walking past the central courtyard and its various topiary. “Anyway, where was I?” The Varistha waves a hand dismissively. “Nevermind, I recall now. The Elven maiden saw through the dragon's magic and manipulated him for her own ends. She'd ask a favor, a minor favor. Help with this or that, and the dragon would use its powerful magic in order to impress her. She'd pretend to swoon, but then request this or that. I won't bore you with the details. To be honest, I don't remember the whole story.”

The Varistha shrugs, apparently deciding to wrap up his tale. “Eventually she tricked the dragon into revealing its true form, but by that time the dragon had already fallen well and truly head over heels. She requested it release her and her people from the binds which kept them loyal. The dragon, desiring naught but to make her happy, agreed. Her tribe fled, her along with them, and migrated south. The dragon followed them every step of the way, doing its best to convince the Elven woman to return his affection. Whenever another dragon would fly too close to the migratory band, he would soar out and challenge the other beast to a duel. He won every battle, and because of his efforts the tribe made it safely to the desert sands of a new homeland. The Elven woman, touched by the dragon's efforts to keep her tribe safe, finally returned the dragon's love. Supposedly their descendants would come to be us and our kind, Samjan.”

Silence reigns for a long moment before Darzi speaks. “Wait, so... how would that even work? I mean... Dragons are massive, towering beast. You've just said so yourself. How would... you know.” Profectus finishes the sentence for her. “How would something that large fit in a hole that small?”

The Varistha runs his fingers through his beard before responding, his voice adopting a tone of sagely wisdom. “Magic.” By this point, you've reached the Varistha's quarters. He pushes the doors wide and steps in, but before you're able to follow the doors slam shut. You suppose that's fair, give the man some privacy to change after all. Darzi stares off with a vague look of disgust. Profectus and Chrys seem utterly nonplussed. Profectus is the first to speak. “You don't seem very dragon-like to me. Y'know, besides being greedy, and magically powerful, and carrying around a dragon's egg.”

You're not greedy... are you?

The Varistha reemerges several minutes later, garbed from head to toe in Hiacian armor. Every step he takes, the golden beads which cover the armor ring together, almost like wind chimes. It's hard to believe each one represents a Rhynian soldier killed. There must be hundreds of them. You also note that he's hacked off his beard, and carries his helmet under one arm.

A shield made of some sort of golden metal is adhered by unknown means to his left arm, it almost seems to have fused with his armor. Across his back, a simple wooden hafted spear tipped with a strange, bluish-grey spear tip rest. Six gems are embedded in the spear, two on the butt of the spear and four beneath the spear tip. At his side, a blade is hidden within a simple leather sheath, runes burned along its length. You can practically feel the magical power roiling off his equipment. There's no doubt, he's dressed for war.

You'd been passing the time with idle conversation. The Varistha seems surprised to see you're still here. “You're not coming with me, Mikhael.” He reiterates, his tone scolding.

You hold up your hands in mock surrender. “I understand, and I don't intend to try and change your mind. As much as I hate to admit it, you're probably right. I merely wish to accompany you as far as you'll let me. Considering the circumstances.”

The Varistha eyes you warily for a moment, but you get the vague impression that he's relieved. In the end, he simply nods and begins to march off down the hallway. “Very well then, walk with me.”
(4/5)
>>
So it was a slutty Elf after all, we all knew how much of a slut they are.
>>
You open your mouth to speak, but Profectus cuts you off. “You know, I really must ask. It's been bothering me ever since you mentioned it... You said Vatis were castrated, right?”

You shoot him a glare, as does Darzi, but the Varistha merely laughs. “Were castrated, yes. They're not any longer, though they are technically supposed to be celibate. If I'm being honest, the entire reason I focused my studies initially on Water magic was so that I might restore what they stole from me once I became skilled enough. I likely fathered my fair share of bastard children, when I was in my youth, as a result. I couldn't say with any certainty.”

It's odd to think he may have descendants running around that have no idea who he is, or that he may have even tutored some without realizing it. You would think he kept up with their lives. Perhaps he did, for a time, but ultimately either lost track of them or surrendered those memories to the spirit to maintain his grip on reality.

You walk in silence for a while, but a thought occurs to you. “Say, just where in the Pa'vala is that artifact intended to restore my sanity? You know, if it really does exist it might be able to take care of your issue. You may not need to die...”

The Varistha shakes his head. “It's been lost, Mikhael. Supposedly it was somewhere to the northeast of Hiacia, the city which founded the Empire. Hiacia was at the epicenter of the Entity's birth, so long as you continue towards the deepest parts of the Deep Desert, you ought to come across it. From there, you'll wish to look out for temple structures. These ought to be obvious enough, their architecture is rather distinct if I recall correctly. Vaulted domes, obelisk covered in writing, pyramids, and massive statues. Look for these signs. As for my death; this is my wish Mikhael. I go willingly to the arms of my goddess. Even if I could further extend my life, I have no particular desire to.”
(4/6 or 7)
>>
You sink into a frustrated silence as you make your way through the temple, across the gardens, and once more into the tunnels. Eventually you speak up again, if only to break up the monotony. “I have a sabre with three glowing red gems, and a ring with the sigil of the Hiacian Empire. Do you know anything about them?”

The Varistha shrugs. “The ring is just a ring. It might have a minor enchantment on it depending on who it was made for. As for the sabre, if it is indeed the sabre I think it is, it was issued to the elite of our military. The high officers and generals. I never handled one myself, but if I recall correctly its effects were not overly amazing. Vys flows along the blade, enhancing its ability to slice through armor.”

You pass the time with idle conversation, Profectus striking up a conversation regarding whether he'd ever laid with one of the Shah's wives. The Varistha refuses to give a direct answer, but in your mind seems to imply that he has. You can't help but wonder which one. You know that the previous Shah's fourth wife was supposedly once a prostitute...

Some of the monks stop your group and ask why the Varistha is dressed for war, but he simply dismisses them, informing them he is off to deal with what remains of the pirates personally and requires no more company to assist him with the task. You make it all the way to the docks, the city streets still more or less abandoned, before he turns to you with a firm look on his face. “This is as far as you'll go, I'm afraid.” He touches his fore and middle fingers to his forehead and then to his chest, but does not bow to you. “I wish you nothing but the best in life, Mikhael.”

(6/7, counting is hard)
>>
You perform the same gesture, as does Darzi. The two of you bow deeply at the end. Chrys and Profectus don't really seem to understand the significance. The Varistha slides his helmet over his head and jerks uncomfortably as the spike buries itself in his spine. He relaxes after a moment, and turns to step off the edge of the pier. Instead of splashing into the water it flows up to meet him, holding him aloft. As he walks comfortably across the surface of the water you call out to ask him one final question.”

“Just how is it you intend to close the portal?”

The Varistha turns, water flowing up around his waste and engulfing his lower body. “I intend to enter the void and kill whatever it is holding the portal open. If that means I have to wipe out every creature inhabiting that foul realm, I will.” His voice carries with it determination. “Check the cache I left for you, you'll find an artifact I believe will peak your interest.”

With that, he leans his body towards the sea and the water responds, carrying him along at an easy pace. He quickly passes outside of shouting range, the waves carrying him rapidly.

Damn, you need to learn to do that.

You watch the Varistha go for a time, until you lose him amongst the waves. You can't help but wonder about the sights he must have seen over the course of his life. The knowledge he must be carrying with him to the grave. The deals he made with that spirit to keep himself lucid. The man has probably forgotten more than most will ever know. What will the Earth be like a thousand years from now? Will you be around to see it?

Darzi speaks up after a fashion. “He was a good man.”

You frown. “Is a good man, Darzi. He's not dead yet.” You turn abruptly and set off towards the fortress. “Lets get looking for whatever it is he left us. I'm curious to see just what this artifact he mentioned is.”

The three of you walk more or less in silence back up the hill to the fortress at the top. The gates remain open, and the soldiers camped out front seem to be in the midst of drills. You note archers practicing at a make-shift target range set up outside of the stables, and a mass of shouting soldiers likely surrounding the sparring grounds. You pass through the campsite unmolested and slip inside the temple. From there, getting back to the gardens is simple.

Finding just where the Varistha hid the cache is another matter entirely. The gardens are not overly large, but they're particularly lush and hard to navigate. You've no idea if the Varistha had a favorite spot in the gardens or not, nor are any of your other companions as far as you know. You take a moment to contemplate just how you want to go about this search.

>Split up, you'll cover more ground.

It won't affect our sanity much since we have done things similar to that, but i doubt it would favor healing since we aren't healing ourselves but instead controlling the waters temperature, so i would liek to think it would gives us better control over the different forms of water.

You peer into the gardens, eventually shaking your head. {Lets stick together and comb through the underbrush. Stick to using the brooches to communicate, don't want anyone knowing we're searching for buried treasure.} Your companions respond in the affirmative, and while the four of you begin scanning through the gardens for any sign of a big म carved into a stone you send a message out to the rest of your party members. {The portal to the void is being dealt with by the Varistha personally, so hopefully it won't be a cause of worry for much longer.}

Fulvia responds almost immediately. {I do not think it wise to put all of our faith into a single man, no matter how powerful he may be. If for no other reason, the void creatures will overrun him by numbers alone.}

You respond after taking a moment's pause to inspect the surface of a wide, flat stone. Unfortunately, no symbol carved on the surface. {I believe he made a deal with an impossibly ancient spirit so that he will have enough power to put an end to the threat. I also gave him my vial of spice, to take as a last resort. Regardless, he intends to die after his task is completed.}

There is a brief pause before Fulvia's response. {Assuming the spirit kept its word, and if it is in fact as powerful as you say it is, we ought have nothing to worry about then. There are reports of Vatis imbued with the strength of spirits wiping out entire legions single handedly, though the price is usually grave. Tell me, Mikhael, do you happen to know what it is the Varistha exchanged for such power?}

You consider how you want to phrase this carefully. {The Varistha couldn't actually pay the price that was asked. He requested I pay the price in his place, as it was through my actions that the portal to the void was opened.} You keeping your tone carefully neutral. {I met with the spirit within its realm after meeting the Varistha in a chamber filled with floating stones. It requested the dragon's heart that I retrieved from the Mines of Longia, and called it a Phylactery.}

Skull Kid is the first to speak, much to your surprise. {Isn't a phylactery like, the container for a lich's soul or something like that?} You honestly have no idea, you've never heard the term before. Nor do you know what a lich is.

Fulvia's response is shocked. {How did you know that, Thad? I would not think you an expert on such matters, considering they are almost exclusively magical in nature.}

Skull Kid, or 'Thad' as Fulvia seems to call him, responds while you resume your search through the underbrush, looking for any sign of a म. {It's a pretty common theme in fiction from my world. An evil Warlock stores their soul away inside a gemstone of great value through some heinous ritual, usually involving the sacrifice of a virgin or a cute, fluffy animal. They turn into an undead lich, their flesh rotting and falling away. Then a brave band of adventurers rushes into the vile creature's lair and retrieves its phylactery, the gemstone containing its soul. They smash the phylactery and then kill the lich, killing it for good.}

(1/2)
>>
Fulvia seems pleased. {That's correct, or mostly correct at least. Records exist of powerful enchanters storing their minds within stones not unlike my own core. My Creator heavily based my design off of those stones.} You note that she says 'My Creator' with a surprising amount of reverence. Considering the shrine you found inside her head., you're not all that surprised. She seems to view him as a father figure of sorts, and you know she's bitter about being declared somehow 'not good enough' to satisfy the man.

Fulvia turns her attention back to you after a moment. {If you've truly given the spirit the phylactery of a dragon, that would mean it was a dragon who knew enough about magic and enchanting to create a phylactery in the first place. Even if it botched the process, which it likely did considering we're not currently living under the tyranny of an immortal, undead dragon, such a beast would be a formidable opponent. I do not think what you did was wise Mikhael.}

You sigh, though you realize consciously she can't hear it. {I'm not even entirely sure how something can be 'undead'. When you die, there is no coming back. Perhaps a body can be puppeteered about by the trapped soul of a Vatis, but that would simply be a cruel facsimile of life. Regardless, we'll deal with the issue when the time comes. The Varistha did not seem overly concerned, nor am I.}

After all, what's the worst that could happen?

It takes perhaps an hour of searching for the four of you to find the marked stone. You made an almost full circuit of the gardens. Chrys was the one to spot it, and even she very nearly stepped past it. It's well concealed by a near-by fern. Chrys uses Earth magic to flip the stone over and then crouches down to haul out the contents. A mud-covered chest large enough to fit a full grown man inside reveals itself, you recognize it as the chest that sat at the foot of the Varistha's bed.

>Open it here and get a look inside.
>Shove it in the cloak and retreat to your room with it.
>As above, but invite everyone in your room to come and examine the chest.

He kinda gave it to us, I'd rather not just start sharing it with everybody willy nilly. We'll give them things if it seems like it'll aid him, but this is everything left of his life and he entrusted it to us.

Old man gave it to us, not them. Mainly because he thought they were all dirty faggot mutant elves but whatever

Nah, let's go deep deep into the woods, chrys knows how to hunt and you always search caves first when you're looking for someone, also nature shit
>>
>>35764183
If we go back we will find a Shah enraged and depressed about his fathers death supported by a military encampment.
Tell our friends to collect everything we have at the monastery while our group gets a carriage. then leave.

woo more Fun times!
>>

You know that'll just make him suspect us right?

When in actuality we helped him out and killed the murderers of his father.

We just tell him that the portal was something that the Pirates did.
>>
>>35764374
Then just repost the OP post as the .5 opener or put a "previously in Banished Quest..."
>>
>>35764379
He had us banished, remember? he isnt going to be thankful about anything we do.
>>
>>35764415
Anon, patience.
>>
>>35764425
He doesn't know we're the same person.

And even if he did end up finding out i really don't think he's gonna give a shit about that. Hell he might even exonerate us if he found out.
>>
>>35764449
Not the anon you're responding to but given Kadirs characterization so far I don't believe he's in any state to be in an exonerating mood.
>>
>>35764469
I say we meet with him, tell him about his father and what we did, then tell him who we are. If he flips on us then we kill him, if not then all is good.
>>
>>35764449
He really doesn't seem like that kinda person from what we have seen. But hey we have a silver tongue and stranger shit has happened.
>>
>>35764449
I think he will be more in the mood to execute people then help them, especially a banished.
>>
>>35764489
Let's just give him what is his and then leave him to his own devices.
>>
>>35764449
He banished us for insulting him. I doubt his willingness to be forgiving.
>>
>>35764512
Not if we play up the fact that we avenged his father.

Who honestly finds out that there father is dead and just randomly decides to start executing people? especially the one who killed your fathers killer. He may be childish but he has reason, he's not even insane.
>>
>>35764537
He banished us for calling him on his bullshit and then spreading rumors about him fucking his mother and doing all sorts of other terrible shit.

He was being a child and overreacting, but it doesn't men he is automatically the devil.
>>
>>35764554
>>35764581
>trusting Kadir
Yeah nah nope nope nah. Give him his ring and then leave it at that.
>>
>>35764554
He's not insane, but he is vindictive. He's not going to give a shit what we say. Even bringing the ring to him is a bad idea, we should just leave it behind when we go.
