As you stand at attention shoulder to shoulder with three of your fellow mercenaries in front of the village entrance. Your heart is thumping in your chest as your excitement builds. Thoughts race through your head.

“This is my first real mission. Remember your training. Will there be any combat?”

Your captain begins briefing.

“It has come to the attention to the village that there are wild sporelings roaming nearby the village’s territory. I sent Jin yesterday to confirm this, and there is indeed approximately a dozen of the creatures in a dense patch of marsh a mile outside the village.”

You remember your lessons at the academy. Sporelings, about knee-high quadrupedal fungi-creatures that are fiercely territorial.

“The village has requested us to eliminate the lot of them before they grow in number and cut off trade routes. A simple enough extermination mission, perfect for our new recruit."

The captain nods at you.

As I have other business I will leave this to you four, Alena, Glen, Sarah, and Jin.”

You all salute

“Work in two pairs. Watch each other’s backs, and above all else, come back safely”

“Understood.” All four of you say in unison

“Good, dismissed.” The captain finishes and leaves back to the village.

“So, pairs huh? How should we split up?” Glen chimes up

“Why don’t we let Alena decide?” Sarah insists as the group all turns to you

After recalling how rude he was to you yesterday, you most certainly don’t want to partner up with Jin. But that leaves the problem of who to choose between Glen and Sarah. They were both kind and welcoming, and you’d feel terrible choosing one over the other right now, but finally you make a decision.

“I’ll partner with Sarah.” You say after a few moments of quiet thought. “Us girls ought to stick together.” You grin in this attempt to not hurt Glen’s feelings too much.

“What a great idea!” Sarah cheers and continues “Without any boys holding us back we should be able to finish before lunch time.”

“Sounds fine to me.” Glen remarks

“If that’s how you want it, I won’t complain. Just don’t let her get you hurt.” Jin says staring at Sarah.

This angers you, but you choose to bite your tongue and proceed to the marsh where they were sighted.

As you walk to your destination, Sarah begins advising you on the best way to combat the Sporelings.

“Don’t let group up on you. Try not to have your back against a marsh pit, they like to hide out in them.”
She continues “Aim your attacks for their face and limbs, attacking their body won’t do much to disable them.” She pauses “And above all else, if you need help, just shout out to me. I’ll be there as quick as I can.” Sarah smiles with her eyes closed.

“Thank you for your advice, I can take care of myself pretty well, but it’s good knowing that you’re there to help me.” You return the smile

“Shut up. We’re here.” Jin chides

Your group stands in front an impressively large and dark bog. Twisted rotting tree jut out of it like splinters. There’s no real way of knowing how deep it is, nor what lies underneath. A l pang of fear hits you.

“Now what?” you ask

“Now we split up and lure them out of marshes, recruit.” Jin replies

You look at the imposing black pool of rotting material

“Marshes? There’s more than this one holding them?”

“Yeah, there’s another smaller one behind this beast. You and Sarah go take that one, less likely for a recruit to get themselves killed.”

You bite your tongue again, a bit harder this time. You stare at Jin in anger and then turn to Sarah.

“Come on, let’s go.” You pull Sarah’s hand and jog to the other side of the marsh.

“So how do we lure them out?” you ask as you stop

“With this.” Sarah pulls out a glass orb with a fuse sticking out of it. “This causes quite the explosion under the bog and it causes them to come out and investigate.” She grins while holding the explosive up high, “Let’s get started, shall we?”

You nod enthusiastically.
She lights the fuse and waits for it to burn for a few seconds, careful to track its position.
You hear a loud boom and displaced water off in the distance.
Sarah throws the explosive and it hits its mark sending swamp water shooting into the air. A few seconds of silence and then out of the marsh you begin to see movement.

The movement in the water first starts with one ripple and soon grows to a few ripples, and not long after the whole marsh is seemingly alive with activity.

The first sporeling emerges from the water and then another and another until there are a dozen crawling toward you and Sarah.

The both of you back up to get more room to maneuver in. You both raise your shields and ready your weapons.

But the water is still rippling. Directly in the center of the marsh are huge splashes of water. Then you see something horrifying emerge. A large spore matriarch raises its body out of the marsh. It’s leaking blood profusely from its body where a large chunk of it is missing. When it reaches the shore you can see its entirety. It stands several feet taller than any man, with four hulking limbs sinking into the earth as it walks. It bellows and you feel your ribcage reverberate in your chest.

It’s injured and it’s angry.

You and Sarah place your backs to each other as the sporelings dart to surround you.

The matriarch seems to stay at the shore writhing in pain.

“Stay close to me Alena. If you have the chance, run. Even if it means leaving me behind.” Sarah shouts while brandishing her polearm

“I-I can’t just run. I can’t. Not again…” you say to quietly

Three sporelings reach you while Sarah deals with four herself.

“Aim for the face and limbs. Aim for the face and limbs.”
You chant over and over to yourself and your mind empties of everything besides the task at hand.

The first sporeling to reach you lunges, his maw aiming at your torso. You deftly smash your shield into his face stopping his advance midair, once on the ground you take a satisfying stab through his eyes, quickly stopping his movement.

You bash the next sporeling with the point of your shield, and easily cut your way through three more. Another sneaks up on you, you jump back to dodge his claw, which only scrapes your leg. You return the favor driving your sword through his face almost to the hilt.

You turn around to see how Sarah is faring. You turn just in time to see her kick the final sporeling with her boot and finish it off with her polearm.

The two of you are out of breath, sweat pouring from your bodies, but managed to take down the sporelings with only a few minor scratches and bruises. You smile at each other as you regain your composure.

“Good job.” Sarah says gasping

“Same to you.” You laugh

Sarah brushes matted blonde hair out of her face as you both turn to face the matriarch that is still writhing in pain.

“We can’t leave that alone. It’s likely to roam out to the roads and attack a traveler. Sarah remarks. We could get Jin and Glen to help us fight it or, if you’re up to it we can take on ourselves. It would be quite the experience for a recruit’s first mission.” She says playfully

“I think…” you pause “We should be enough” a smile slowly creeps on your face.

“I was hoping you would say that” Sarah straightens herself out. “Listen, let me take lead on this. I’ll get its attention while you strike wherever you can. I’ll mainly be distracting its face but watch out for its limbs, got it?”

“Got it!” you nod enthusiastically and ready your sword.

“Alright, let’s go.”

Sarah lowers her body and goes into a trot approaching the matriarch from its front.

Once Sarah is just a few yards away, it turns its attention to her and almost immediately attempts to slam one of its front limbs down on her.

Sarah skillfully dodges by rolling to the side. The attack misses and Sarah takes the opportunity to run her polearm through the attacking limb. The metal hits directly at the joint and sickening crunch and tearing sound can be heard as Sarah pulls out her weapon. Blood pours from the opening.

She has its attention.

You run up from the opposite side and make your way to the side of its face. Sarah dodges and jabs to maintain its gaze. You reach the side of its face and manage to slash it a few times before having to fall back from its enormous jaws.

Sarah takes advantage of its shift and manages to slice the side of its mouth open. She has to fall back.

The creature is slowing and breathing heavily. It lowers its head.

“Now!” Sarah yells to you.
[1/?]

You see the opening for you to drive your sword through its crab-like face. You begin charging for the final strike.

The matriarch’s limb slams your legs from the side.

You are thrown several feet and are winded from landing.

The creature falls on its face and then begins crawling toward you using its good front limb. It drags its body through the earth and makes a dive to crush you.
You raise your shield and close your eyes to brace for the impact.

Nothing.

You finally open your eyes to see a supine Sarah with bracing her weapon which has pierced the top of matriarch’s mouth. Blonde hair elegantly falling back out of face.

“A little help.” She giggles “It’s quite heavy.”

You get up and shove the creature off to the side. Sarah pulls out her weapon as you look for yours.

You finally locate it and return to Sarah.

“You saved my life. I don’t know how to thank you” You look Sarah directly in the eye.

“You had your shield, so I’m sure the blow wouldn’t have killed you. But I do accept your thanks. Here, take this.”

She hands you a wet fang from the creature. The largest from its mouth.

“Those are valuable, you can sell it or have it crafted into a weapon point. Plus now we match.” She grins as she holds an identical fang

“I’ll treasure it. It’s from my first real mission after all.” You say

“Wow!” a voice from behind you shouts.

You turn and see Glen and Jin walking toward you.

“I thought we had it bad, but they had to deal with a matriarch. Jin your information was horrible.” Glen runs up to you and Sarah. “You two alright?” he asks with concern.

You notice that he was mainly looking at Sarah when he asked.

“Yes, we're fine. Just a few scratches.” Sarah assures. "We both did quite well, especially Alena."

“See, they’re fine, and at least we know that the recruit won’t manage to get us killed when we go on missions.” Jin snidely remarks

“I think it was fifteen sporelings for both of us, so thirty in total.”

“A lot more than a dozen.” You murmur.

“True, Jin are you sure you scouted here yesterday? You didn’t skip out on it right?” Glen presses

“What does it matter now? We all made it just fine. In fact those two got quite the prizes” He points to both the fangs.

“You know,” Glen pauses, “maybe it’s not the recruits we should be concerned about.”

“What the hell are you implying?” Jin gazes at Glen with spite

“You know damn well what I’m implying. Your information was useless and it could’ve have gotten one of us killed.” Glen steps closer to Jin, their faces only inches.

“Do something then.” Jin spits out

“Stop!” Sarah shouts at the two of them. Jin your wrong information will be in the report to the captain.”

“Yes, be sure to report all this to the captain. We’ll see what he chooses to do.” Jin replies coldly

Sarah pulls on Glen shoulder. “Let it go, please.”

Glen stares at Jin for a few seconds longer and walks away

“Let’s go home.” Sarah says.

The walk back to town was a quiet one, and by the time you got back, it was already late afternoon.

The four of you reach the guild building, and go your separate ways once inside.

You make your way to your quarters.
You place your weapons down on the desk along with the newly acquired Matriarch fang. You remove your armor and underclothes. You’re a bit more bruised than you had realized but nothing too serious.
A large purple bruise, tender to the touch sticks out on your white thigh from when you were hit directly.

You gently touch the bruise on your ribs from when you were tossed to the ground. You affirm that no ribs are broken.

You sigh. You’re happy that your first mission was such a success but are upset at how it ended. You put on a new set of clothes, go to bathe, eat a quick meal, and make your way back to your bed to sleep.

The day was a resounding success. As you sleep your mind processes the information learned from the day’s events most of all your mind goes over

You remember clearly Sarah’s positioning when she charged in to attack. You remember how she was able to completely avoid the limb.
You recall how she recovered so quickly from the roll and was able to catch her enemy off guard because of it.
The scene repeats in your dreams until it becomes a part of your being, something that you feel with just a little practice to work out the kinks, you could use it in combat.

Skill Dodge and Counter Gained (Current Rank: 2)

“Sore.”

The only word that can come to mind when you wake up.

You feel as though you might be too sore to get up. You laugh. The soreness is a reminder, a reminder of your first successful mission. The first of many you hope.

Eventually you will yourself to get out of bed to get some breakfast.

You carefully, slowly, and painfully ease yourself onto the stool next to Glen at the counter like you did the day before.

“Your muscles okay there, Miss Honors?” Glen chuckles slightly

“No, and stop calling me that or else I’ll have to teach you a lesson.” You groan

“Teach me a lesson, eh?” Glen pauses afterward for a few seconds, he then punches you lightly in the arm causing you to yelp.

“Not today, but I swear I’ll kick your ass someday.” You glare

You both laugh heartily.

“Oh yes, how could I forget?” Glen says as he reaches to his side and then tosses you a pouch. “There, your cut from yesterday’s mission. The village tossed in extra after they heard about the Matriarch you guys killed. Don’t worry we split that extra in between you and Sarah.” Glen asserts.

You pour the contents of the pouch onto the counter. 25 silver coins, not a bad haul. You remember that your full set of armor set you back 40 silver coins. You put the coins back and pocket the pouch.

“I’ll put it to good use.” You reply

“It’s yours to do whatever you want with.” Glen says and leans closer and whispers I wouldn’t suggest shopping alone with Valerie, she has a subtle way of getting you to buy her things.

“Just you, Glen.” Valerie remarks while placing a plate of breakfast down next to you.

You and Glen both jump.

“Because you’re the only pushover. For now that is.” Valerie looks into your eyes with a cute but eerie smile.

“Anyway,” you look away from the soul-piercing stare. “Where’s Sarah? Maybe I’ll take her shopping instead.”

“Sarah is out in courtyard practicing with her polearm. She might take you up on that offer.” Glen continues, “Any of us three can show you around town if you want. But someone has to stay behind to receive any requests”

“Oh no.” Glen sighed

“Sounds lovely” Valerie remarked with only the slightest hint of disappointment in her voice.

“Alena saved you Glen, I was going to enlist your help cleaning out the kitchen.”

“Oh my, look at the time. We should be getting ready to leave, right Alena?” Glen quickly says.

“By the way Alena, the captain said he wanted a quick word." Valerie says

“The captain? What would he want?” you ask

“I’m not sure, maybe something about yesterday’s mission?” Glen suggests "I’ll go get Sarah in the meantime.”

“Hmm. Okay then. I’ll meet you out front.” You reply
